Hmm. Podcast begin.
[00:01:01] Hey everybody, I'm Wendy. I'm Rennie. And I'm Veronica. And this is Dragoncast, a podcast dedicated to House of the Dragon. This week, we're discussing the House of the Dragon Season 3 trailers and our hopes, dreams, and fears for Season 3. All right. Has everybody watched the trailer? Yes. Yes.
[00:01:30] And what did you think? I was a little surprised how much I feel like they told us from it. Like, I didn't expect to see the scenes that we saw of, like, Rhaenyra, what appears to be taking the throne. I just didn't expect to see that in the trailer. I'm suspicious also. I'm suspicious of everything they show us. Yeah, I think that's smart.
[00:02:00] Yes. I think that's right. I wanted to tell everybody that listeners, if you haven't subscribed on YouTube to HBO's House of the Dragon feed, you really should. Because there's really some cool stuff that they've been putting out.
[00:02:17] Not only the trailer, but there's a little snippet, like a 25-second video of a billboard in Times Square with an animated Cyrax and Caraxes roaring and snapping. It would be so cool to be in Times Square and actually see that video. That would be amazing. And there's also some fun little behind-the-scenes snippets with factoids like this one.
[00:02:46] They have set a new world record for the number of stunt performers set on fire at one time. That's 23. Wow. Wow. And they do some stuff with the actors doing little quiz things, you know. And there's one in which you get to see how pretty Tom Glynn Carney actually is in his natural hair and without half his face burned off. So that was fun.
[00:03:13] I feel like they're all very beautiful people, like seeing them on the red carpet. I'm kind of amazed. Like how did you get this many? Just like stunning people all together. Yeah. All right. So let's talk about the trailer. Yeah. Dragons! Oh my gosh. So many dragons. So many dragons.
[00:03:39] It's really interesting because I love, love, love Night of the Seven Kingdoms, where of course there aren't any dragons. And I thought, wow, I'm not sure I want to go back to House of the Dragon after how totally wonderful Night of the Seven Kingdoms was. And then I saw the dragons and I thought, dragons! Yeah. Yeah.
[00:04:00] I mean, the battlefields that we saw and the sea battle that is obviously going to take place. Yeah. I mean, it's just epic. And I feel like nobody can bring that to us other than this world of Westeros.
[00:04:47] Yeah. And it seems like we're going to see a lot of that potential play out this season. Yes. Yeah. So I think that this season will probably begin and end with a major battle.
[00:05:08] And last season, Ryan Condal has said he wanted to end with the battle that's called the Battle of the Gullet, which is the sea battle that we see in the trailer. And so I think that's episode one, that the season begins with that, which is a major, major event in the Dance of the Dragons.
[00:05:28] And I think it's going to end with the Battle of the Gullet.
[00:05:58] And I don't know if we mess around with it that way. But so there's the Gullet, the Red Fork, the Fish Feed, the Butcher's Ball, the Honeywine, Bitter Bridge and First Tumbleton. Those are the battles that take place in this section of the Targaryen Civil War. Just knowing that there are that many battles in this section of the Civil War tells you just how bad this Civil War is.
[00:06:27] Yeah, I'm excited to finally see the sea snake and, you know, the Driftmark Navy, if that's what we'll call it, in action. Because I feel like for a long time we've heard about this is the greatest Navy in all of, you know, this world. But we really haven't seen it like this. So I'm excited about that.
[00:06:58] Same. Same. What else did you see in the trailer? Lord Ormond Hightower, who is Otto Hightower's nephew and therefore Allison's cousin. He's played by James Norton, who, yeah. Yeah. And last time I saw James Norton in anything, it was in this really, really, really bad BBC series called King and Conqueror about William the Conqueror and King Harold of England. And he played King Harold.
[00:07:27] And that series was more fictional than Game of Thrones, I swear. It's supposed to be based in history. But they just, they did these weird things. Like, historically, King Harold died at the Battle of Hastings. He got shot through the eye by an arrow. But in this series, to make it, quote unquote, more dramatic, they had William and Harold have a one-on-one sword duel and William kills him.
[00:07:55] And then for absolutely no reason whatsoever, William picks up an arrow off the field and jams it through Harold's eye. Just because that's how Harold died in real life. So they had to, you know. Anyway, I'm hoping that James Norton gets some better material in this series that he got in that one. Yeah. He was quite handsome. Lord Armin Hightower, by the way, has a Valyrian steel sword called Vigilance.
[00:08:23] And we only see the hilt of it attached to his belt in the trailer. But I hope we see him pull it out in the course of the show. That sounds very Hightower of him. And I honestly feel like that actor looks similar to Allison's brother. I actually did not quite realize that it was not her brother until you said that there. Interesting. Yeah.
[00:08:52] Gawain is there, too. Gawain. I couldn't remember his name. Yeah, Gawain. We see just a brief shot of him in the trailer having a fight with somebody inside, inside of a room, inside a castle. So also at one point in the trailer, we see a big field of soldiers. And there's a dragon parked in the front line of the soldiers on the ground. Yeah.
[00:09:18] And that's Tessarion, who we saw just at the end of season two. Tessarion, the Blue Queen she's known as. And Tessarion's rider is Daeron Targaryen, who is Viserys and Alicent's fourth and youngest child. That we haven't seen yet, right? We haven't seen yet, because he's been off at the high tower being a squire.
[00:09:47] We see the same four dragons kind of flying a couple times, and I'm assuming that's the blacks. Yes. It's when we see him flying over King's Landing, that's Cyrax, Rhaenyra's dragon, Caraxes, Daemon's dragon,
[00:10:05] and then Silverwing, who was won over by Ulf the White in the Red Sewing, where the dragon seeds took dragons last season, and then Vermithor with Hugh Hammer. Yep. So those are the four. We saw a couple notable people appearing to try to flee King's Landing,
[00:10:31] the first of which is Alicent and Helena, and I'm assuming Helena's daughter, Jaheara? Yeah. But it doesn't appear that, well, I don't know the order of things, but I'm guessing they don't actually make it out of the city based on how many other clips they show us of Alicent conversing with Rhaenyra. It seems like they're not actually gone from King's Landing.
[00:10:57] Again, it's really hard to tell how they have cut things and if they're actually talking or you're getting a voiceover. Somehow, Alicent, she either makes it out and then comes back or she makes it out later because we see her at Harrenhal, and I don't know what the heck. Yeah, but if it's at Harrenhal, it could also be possibly a vision and she's not actually there. That's true. That is true. That is true.
[00:11:27] The only other thing I was going to say about Pimbal escaping King's Landing, and I can't even take credit for this because I saw the clip but couldn't figure out who it was, and so I had to go to like a YouTube breakdown. But we actually see a woman who looked familiar look up at the sky at a dragon flying overhead, and she kind of had some bags looking like she was leaving. It's Hugh Hammer's wife. Yes. And it looks like she's looking up at him on his dragon, and I'm guessing she's like,
[00:11:57] no, I'm leaving you. This wasn't whatever you're doing. I'm not behind is what I'm guessing is happening there. Well, this is part of what makes me think that they've cut things to make it look like things are happening at the same time in the same place that really aren't, because last season we did not hear that Hugh's wife was going to King's Landing. We heard she was going somewhere else. Yeah.
[00:12:25] Yeah, and they show like a scene with Helena crying, but that could be anything, anytime, the whole season. That's right. Yes. Yeah. One other thing we see is the Winter Wolves who were briefly introduced at the end of last season. They were briefly introduced at the end of last season. They're led by Roddy the Ruin, also known as Roderick Dustin, Lord of Barrowtown.
[00:12:50] And these are the Northerners who have come down from the north because winter has come. I'm excited for some Northerners. We see Eamon stabbing somebody. I don't think it's very, it's not revealed who he's stabbing. It's probably nobody.
[00:13:12] And so it appears that, you know, in the trailer, Rhaenyra takes over King's Landing, but is having some trouble keeping everything together, I would say. At least that's the impression they're trying to give us. Yes.
[00:13:30] It seemed like that possibly, and this doesn't feel too far off from what was starting to happen last season too, but Lord Corlys seemed to be not only talking about the small folks' attitude sort of turning and whether they feel safe and like Rhaenyra, but it also seemed that he was feeling dissatisfied with her leadership in the way he was talking.
[00:13:54] At one point, Rhaenyra says, bring Eamon the Usurper to me. And I thought, well, Eamon must be at least somewhat recovered then. You know, because when we left him, he was pretty much a heap of misery and pretty bedridden almost. Or maybe she's demanding this upon taking over with no knowledge.
[00:14:26] Maybe she doesn't know. Exactly. She may not know what shape he's in and where he is and all that. Yeah. We did see one clip of it looks like Aegon on the move out in the world somewhere. Okay, I didn't see that. He's standing out. So it looks like maybe outside or in a crowd of people. I don't know what he was doing, but we did see just like a quick flash of him with his damaged face.
[00:14:51] Yeah, I think the trailer's not giving us a lot of what's going on with Aegon because that will be a surprise. And that's about all I had for the trailer. Anything else?
[00:15:08] I think my only thing was I'm ready to be annoyed at Allison again because it seemed like throughout this trailer, all she was doing was telling people what to do and telling people I told you so without any self-reflection of her own mistakes. It's funny because I just finished rewatching most of both seasons. I skipped around.
[00:15:33] I skipped past a lot of the Damon haunting Harrenhal parts, but I came away from it feeling renewed in my empathy for Allison. And just, you know, just thinking about what a raw deal in life Allison got, you know, I just, I came away like, yeah, I'm right in feeling that way.
[00:16:05] I agree that she's definitely a victim and has gone through horrible things and has had a horrible life, but it's hard for me to excuse how she's sort of, I feel like she's just been so hurt by the patriarchal way of doing things.
[00:16:23] And not only will she not resist in her own life, which is fair, it might mean really terrible things, but the judgment that she lays on Rhaenyra and then in turn the, that she goes and does basically the same thing that she wrote Rhaenyra off for is really hard for me. So I do have empathy for that. That she is a complete victim in so much of it. And, oh, I don't know.
[00:16:53] I don't know if I can forgive her for what she has done. It does seem like the trailer is trying to give us the impression that she kind of double, like betrays Rhaenyra. But I think, you know, we're going to need more context before we figure all that out.
[00:17:12] I also can afford at this point of things, everyone has committed atrocities and it becomes very difficult probably in the midst of what looks like absolute carnage that's about to rain down to really point to one side or the other as the better side.
[00:17:34] And at this point when it's this deep, it would be hard not to choose your children as putting yourself in Alison's shoes. But the lead up to it is more difficult for me. And seeing the dragons burning, you know, spraying fire all over the Red Keep and King's Landing just brought me right back to Daenerys. Yeah.
[00:18:01] So that was, you know, we haven't seen that since then. And, you know, I'm sure that the people that she thinks she's liberating are probably not too happy with that. For sure. Yeah. All right. What else do we have? Is there anybody you hope will die this season? We often talk about who we don't want to die, but is there anyone else?
[00:18:31] Ooh. I think Kristen Cole, I could be okay to be rid of. No. I really know. I love to hate him. I like to hate Eamond more. And so as long as Eamond and Damon make it, I'll be okay. But I could lose Sir Crispy. No, I want to keep Crispy for a while.
[00:18:59] Um, I don't know. Otto? Oh, yes. Yes. But I don't want him to slip quietly into the night either. Me neither. And I don't think he will. Yeah. I want him to get his. At the very least, he'll be lecturing people till the end. I anticipate. Yes. Yes.
[00:19:29] I'm hoping that we get some more Helena, like, dream seeing. I want some. Uh. Cool insights into the future. I want to see them do more with Helena's character. Yeah. There's a scene of Rhaenyra walking through the streets of King's Landing and seeing graffiti that says Queen of Bastards. Yep.
[00:19:51] And seeing her walk through the street of King's Landing is like a callback to season one when Damon took her on that. Oh, yeah. Uh, outing in King's Landing. And she saw the. The, yeah, the puppet show. Mm-hmm. Or the play. And, um. So, uh. I thought that was interesting that she. She's walking through King's Landing again, but this time as Queen.
[00:20:19] And what she's seeing isn't much better. No. No, not at all. No. And it's just so unfair. You know, Rhaenyra. You know, you have to get married here. Marry this guy that we know is gay. And then get heirs one way or the other. And now we're going to fault you for that, too.
[00:20:45] And, you know, she's haunted by that for the rest of her life. Yes. Yeah. I'm going to be ready for another Night of the Seven Kingdoms after this season, I think. Yeah, I know. I'm feeling sad already. Yeah. I think that's what. I've heard that from several people. Like, they're afraid. But I think you have to go into it kind of knowing that. I'm stealing myself for it. Yes.
[00:21:15] If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention. That's right. And I kind of like that. That I felt like season one gave us all the character buildup, told us all the stories to know where we are in this world. And then season two kind of sets the stage for this epic war. War. And then this is it. We're here. Yeah. Season three, we are at war. Yeah.
[00:21:45] Yeah. I mean, you know, as hard as I think it was in season one to have the grow up, right? The time jump. I really am glad we had that because I think like just what you were talking about with empathy for Allison, I think across both of our two main, like, I don't know if we want to call them both heroines or what. But I think seeing them as children, I mean, teens, but children, right?
[00:22:14] Really helps you understand who they are now. And started us out, I think, with more empathy, even though I just admitted I do struggle with it with Allison. When you go back to those first episodes, it's really such a juxtaposition to see that friendship and that youthfulness and like hopefulness for the future. And then coming to what now, you know, I think is going to be such a dark, dark season, season three.
[00:22:43] I think it, I don't know, it just plays well for me to have that. And so I'm really glad that's where we started. We see a dragon egg. Aemon is holding a dragon egg and he's there in Harrenhal with Alice River, Alice Rivers. So where did that dragon egg come from?
[00:23:07] That is something that I will be very interested to see what they do with that this season and what the significance of that dragon egg might be. Hmm. I feel like it's impossible for me not to jump immediately to the eggs that Dany has in Game of Thrones. Yeah. Is that one of those eggs, right? Right. Every time they show an egg. I know.
[00:23:38] One thing that I'm a little bit fearful of is too much spectacle and not enough character. I personally think that the last season of Stranger Things suffered from this. Yeah. I mean, it was crazy action, special effects. But I missed the down times, the quiet times between the characters. I really did.
[00:24:07] And I hope that we still get quiet times and dialogue and character building in this season, even though I know they have a lot of action to cover. I'm hopeful that we do.
[00:24:56] I'm hopeful that we do. I'm hopeful that we do. I'm hopeful that we do. Hopefully, they use different devices like that to get us some of that non-battle action. But one thing I'm worried about is that the season is only eight episodes. And we've already mentioned that Ryan Condal says one of them is a quote unquote conceptual episode.
[00:25:28] So, really, we only have seven episodes to tell the main story. So, I don't know how much they have time for the more character development that we're talking about. I hope they do it. But at least the first episode is, you know, going to be pretty long. So, that's good. Right? Like 72 minutes? Is that right? Wow. Yeah. It's going to be a long night.

[00:27:26] Einfach lauschen und genießen. Aldi. Gutes für alle. All right. I have one news article. It is a little spoilery. Like if you don't want anything, if you don't want to know anything about the first episode, then I wouldn't listen. But it really only talks about the first episode, pretty much. This is an article called
[00:27:54] The Most Explosive Start to a Westeros Set Season to Date. The article is by Jordan Fahley, and it's for the website Total Film. For all its strengths, House of the Dragons Season 2 was ultimately hobbled by the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Instead of a clearly intended 10-episode second season, House of the Dragons' sophomore run was trimmed to just eight installments,
[00:28:22] abruptly cutting the action short right before the climactic confrontation. Well, the good news is that House of the Dragons Season 3's first four episodes, the sum total sent to press for review, wastes no time in paying off that long wait. It's easily the most explosive start to a Westeros Set Season to Date. The much-ballyhooed... Ballyhoo. That is a word you do not hear very often.
[00:28:51] Gotta fit that into the vocab. The much-ballyhooed Battle of the Gullet, arguably the craziest episode of TV ever made among the many superlatives thrown around in recent interviews, is the grueling centerpiece of the 65-minute Season 3 premiere, a brutal, thrillingly staged battle at sea. It pits Lord Corlys's armada against a fleet of revenge-fueled Triarchy pirates,
[00:29:19] with dragons raining fire down from the skies for good measure. Like many of Thrones' famed battle episodes, it's an impressive marriage of spectacle and character with some seriously huge ramifications for the future of the Team Green versus Team Black Civil War. Seriously huge. Yeah. Adeptly orchestrated by Red Sewing director Lonnie Peristair,
[00:29:49] sorry if I'm not saying that right, the Gullet leans into the chaos of naval combat and makes some memorably unexpected starboard turns. A tense sequence where Corlys attempts to run his Triarchy pursuers aground along the shallow Dragonstone Pass is just as exciting in its way as the many boardings and burnings. Largely shot in real water tanks,
[00:30:16] the scale of the action eclipses anything outside the world of Westeros, even if the absence of major players like Rhaenyra and Aemon means the Battle of the Gullet never quite reaches the highs of the Battle of the Bastards, Hardhome, or several of Thrones' standard-bearing set-piece episodes. That's exciting. I take umbrage at that. I think Corlys is a major character. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Definitely.
[00:30:45] Yeah. I guess maybe because it's not, you know, Rhaenyra or Alicent. Right. It's not, you know, it kind of lessens the stakes, but really it doesn't. I mean, he is key. Yes. All right. So I'm excited about this season.
[00:31:13] Oh, speaking of the characters and the performances, there was something I was going to say that I forgot, which is, you know, way back before season one when the casting was announced and Matt Smith was announced as Damon, I was, I had only seen him as the Doctor in Doctor Who. And so I was really skeptical about him playing this part. And then earlier this year,
[00:31:41] I was curious about other things he had been in. So I watched the first season of The Crown where he plays Prince Philip. I've watched that. I just watched that last year. If I had seen that before the first season of House of the Dragon, I would never have had any doubts about him playing Damon. Oh, yeah. He's amazing as Prince Philip. There's a scene where he faces down an elephant.
[00:32:09] He's standing on foot and he just faces down this elephant. And I thought, okay, yes. He was perfect casting all along for this part. And I think he's been great. And Damon is my favorite character. I think he kind of makes Prince Philip probably a lot cooler than he really was. Absolutely. I agree. And that's okay. Yeah. I also had not seen Matt Smith in anything really before this,
[00:32:39] but I knew of him as Doctor Who and saw it. I did not expect to just like, he is my favorite character for sure. He hangs on my Christmas tree. Have a little ornament. I love it. I mean, followed closely by Rhaenyra and then Aemond, but they're all just a delight. And he just oozes Damon energy on screen. It's really good. Wendy, you said you'd been doing a rewatch. I've been doing a rewatch also.
[00:33:06] And, you know, Damon is one of our continuities because it was Matt Smith from the beginning. So even when the younger actors were playing Rhaenyra and Allison, it was Matt Smith. And I think his continuance presence in the show helps a lot when we have that time jump. But he's just amazing from the first time that we see him.
[00:33:36] And he gives young Rhaenyra that Valyrian steel necklace and they speak Valyrian to each other. I could listen to Rhaenyra and Damon speak Valyrian to each other for a whole episode. Yes. And the chemistry that he had with young Rhaenyra was really good, too. Like, with both of the actresses. Yes. Yeah. They do a great job.
[00:34:06] All right. Anything else? Okay. We have a little bit of listener feedback. Veronica, you want to read our first one? Yeah. Yeah. Lindsay Schlitt says, I am so nervous about a lot of dragon death. I love the sky puppies the most. It's like watching a movie where the dog dies. Oh, I am nervous about that, too.
[00:34:32] Especially the way they, like, incorporated real animal sounds into the noises the dragons make. Like, it hits somewhere inside. Yeah. Even knowing it's just, like, computer artwork. It still hits. I'm still getting over some of them. Yeah. And the thing that I really love about the dragons is that they made them all different looking and different sounding.
[00:34:59] So they have more personality than Daenerys' three dragons. It was hard to tell them apart because they were all the same model, just different colors. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I'm still getting over rainies. I know. Yeah. Yeah. And we got a call from Steve Brown. Hello, Dragon Cats. This is Steve. And I didn't even realize House of the Dragon was coming back. I'm great.
[00:35:28] How long has it been gone? I don't even remember season two. It's, I'm going to definitely need a refresher. So can't wait to hear what you guys are going to say about or remind us about seasons, the past seasons, and what your expectations are for season three. I'll be watching and hopefully be able to record something for it next week. We'll see. But anyway, love you guys' coverage. Can't wait to hear it. And I'll be listening. Talk to you later. Aw, thanks, Steve. All right. Well, that is it.
[00:35:58] Come along with us as we watch Just Like You, and you'll get to hear all our great coverage. Next week on House of the Dragon, we are covering season three, episode one. As of yet unnamed, do we want to guess a name? The Gullet? Battle of the Gullet. It could be called the Battle of the Gullet. Yeah. Okay. Or something more abstract. I don't know. Yeah.
[00:36:27] It is written by Ryan Condal and directed by Lani Parasteri. You can leave feedback at our Podcastica Facebook group. We post weekly feedback threads. Or you can leave feedback or voicemails by email at dragons at podcastica.com. And you can find all of our contact information at podcastica.com as well.
[00:36:55] Anybody listening to anything recently from podcastica.com? I'm still listening to the rewatch, which I've been enjoying, but I'm an episode or two behind where I was just traveling some for work. But I do the rewatch and then I like watch five episodes and I'm way out of whack with them. And then I start over again.
[00:37:19] I've been listening to the rewatch too, and we're getting into a difficult stretch of the series. Yes. I might skip that. I've also been listening to the Severance podcast. Yes. I have not been rewatching. I've just been listening to the podcast, hoping that it would make me appreciate Severance more because everything I read about Severance is about how fabulous it is.
[00:37:48] And I watched both seasons, but I bounced off of it some. And indeed, Karen and Jason's enthusiasm for it and their discussion of it has made me appreciate it more in retrospect. So that's been great. I have found, because I just watched it for the first time in the last six months, and I have found I felt the same way. I like episodes one through four or five.
[00:38:17] It feels like a slog. And then as soon as I get to five, I'm like, I want to binge it. And then I'm really into it, you know? So it's like they're really good at those last few episodes. But the first few episodes of the season, I don't know. But I mean, I'm still watching.
[00:38:39] Not sure everyone knows this, but Podcastica has covered every episode of Game of Thrones, and we've now added our whole archive of coverage to the Dragoncast feed. Just scroll back and you'll find it. The earliest episodes are labeled G-O-M to reflect their original numbering, while others come from later eras of our coverage.
[00:39:01] We're adding them here because Dragoncast has become Podcastica's home for Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the rest of George R.R. Martin's world. One thing to note, the order can be a little confusing. We originally covered whole seasons at a time. Then we started with season five, switched to episode-by-episode coverage.
[00:39:25] Between seasons seven and eight, we went back and did a full episode-by-episode series rewatch before covering the final season as it aired. Also, the rewatch episodes are spoilery for future episodes and are labeled rewatch. All right, that's our show, everybody. Thanks for listening. Until next time, I'm Rennie. I'm Veronica. And I'm Wendy. Dracarys.
