[00:00:00] Hmm? Ah! Hmm... Let's get out!

[00:00:30] Five o'clock tonight, Patricia. I've got a good one for you. They started in the foot. Oh my... Damn it! What? They're sitting right at the entrance and I was trying to address the room, you know what I'm saying? Alright, fuggos. Let's go. No, no, no. You're out of double dates.

[00:01:16] Hey everybody, welcome to our perfect party. I'm Jason. And I'm Karen. Have a glass of punch. This is Everything's Fine, a Widow's Bay Podcast. And this episode, we're covering Widow's Bay Season 1, Episode 4, Beach Reads. Beach Reads, where you read something and then you go to the beach. It sounds super fun! And you walk into the ocean. It will have a jaw-dropping tongue.

[00:01:42] Last time I asked for people to rate and possibly review us and we had a goal of 20 ratings, but we didn't get 20, we got 27! Yay! Nice! Awesome, right? Thanks, everybody! Thanks, everybody! Now when I type in Widows Bay and Apple Podcasts, we come up second. So, that's incredible. And you guys totally made a difference. Oh! So, thank you so much.

[00:02:09] A few of you, actually a bunch of you also rated us and left reviews on Wax Episodic too. And that just, of course, makes both of us feel really good. So, thank you so much for that. Thanks, everybody! Appreciate you guys. We do. Just for fun, I'm going to read one of the reviews. We don't usually do that, but I thought we might as well. This is from KittyChick1212, who says, This is a great podcast on a great show. Five stars. The perfect combo of great hosts and a wonderfully quirky show to podcast about.

[00:02:37] The hosts, Jason and Karen, have great chemistry and you can tell they really enjoy the show. Their delightfully witty insights make listening to their takes on this very funny yet quite creepy show, something I look forward to each week. They do a true deep dive, always finding things to discuss that make me think, How did I miss that? Which means I have to rewatch with pleasure the discussed episode. And I love that they save spoilers for the end, separated into their own chapter so I never have to yell, No! while scrambling to stop the cast. I absolutely love this podcast.

[00:03:07] Thank you, KittyChick1212. Thanks, KittyChick1212. Sometimes I scream, No! just anyway. No matter what Jason says. So, we met our goal. If any more of you want to give us a rating, we wouldn't be mad. Here, drink this punch. We'd be glad. And, uh... March on over there. Come on into the water. It's warm. It's fine. All right.

[00:03:34] That said, here's Widow's Bay Season 1, Episode 4, Beach Reads. Do you want to read the plot summary or would you like me to read it? Sure, I'll read it. Okay, go for it. Four days prior to the sunset cocktail party, Patricia discovers a self-help book in her mobile library's donation bin, which encourages her to plan the perfect party to prove her social worth.

[00:03:56] A failed attempt to socialize with women from her high school reveals that Patricia believes she was stalked by a serial killer known as the boogeyman who murdered two other teen girls. Was it four other teen girls or two? Do we get the number? I mean, we heard about two from her mean girl, quote, friend. But I feel like there was probably more, right? Yeah, but her story is widely disbelieved in town.

[00:04:21] The sunset cocktails party started poorly with low attendance, but as more tourists trickle in, Patricia serves the punch and quickly becomes the center of attention. Bashir arrives and breaks Patricia out of her trance, making her realize she has been under an illusion that her self-help book is, in fact, a grimoire. And she has served her guest's punch made with animal parts.

[00:04:43] Down at the beach, the entranced partygoers walk open-mouthed into the sea, but Patricia breaks the spell by throwing the grimoire into a bonfire. Walking home, she is picked up by Tom and Wick, and the three drive to the church to discover that Reverend Bryce has hanged himself. Oh, a grimoire, by the way. I didn't know what that meant. It's a book of magic spells and invocations.

[00:05:07] You know what? I had to look it up too. I'd never heard of it, and now it seems like everybody's referencing grimoires. I've heard that word, but I didn't know what it meant. That's a good word. Grimoire. Is that the same thing as in the Ash versus Evil Dead or Evil Dead, the series? Is that a grimoire? It's gotta be. Yeah, yeah, it's gotta be. In fact, I would presume that the people who wrote this episode love Evil Dead.

[00:05:36] Because it clearly looks like the Necronomicon, a.k.a. the Book of the Dead, bounded flesh. That's the first thing I thought of. It did look like the Necronomicon. Yeah, with all the fucked up satanic drawings inside and everything. Yeah, exactly. It was a lot of little details that I don't think I caught when I watched it that time.

[00:06:05] But I loved it even more. It hit hard, but it was good. Tom is my favorite character, but Patricia's a close second. And I just think this is my favorite episode of the whole series so far. Without a doubt. Yeah. I really love that horrific things were happening through a lot of it, but it was an illusion. And just the shock of that was such a great effect at the end. Yep.

[00:06:25] But also, even probably more than that is just the relatability of her situation of wanting to fit in and be included and loved and feeling socially awkward and left out. I can identify with that. It's so real. Me too. Me too. Who can't? I mean, there's some people who can't, but just stop listening. Go to your party. Go to your popular friends. No, I'm just kidding. But no, I loved it. What about you?

[00:06:54] We'll be at the weirdo and outcast table. We'll be reading our books in the corner. Our grimoire. I loved it. Cato Flynn, it was a magnificent performance. She's so good watching her dance. Her little weird. She's almost like Elaine Bennis. Not quite that bad. In Seinfeld, it was amazing. And just watching her trying to change the relationship to the Mean Girls and ultimately failing.

[00:07:23] Oh my God. It was fantastic. Plus, like you said, it was loaded with details. So I saw things in the second watch. I saw things in the third watch that I didn't see the first time. And I really enjoy a movie or a TV show that has that kind of level of detail. So, yeah. And this is one of those shows too, that they don't spell everything out that's in the background.

[00:07:50] So you just get a feel for it. And it makes you feel like they're respecting your intelligence. Like for example, unless I missed it, we don't really know how many women died, how many teenagers, like you were mentioning. Right. This, we've heard a little bit of the story of the boogeyman when Patricia was telling Tom that she still puts her dresser up against her door every night. And she said, he goes, well, she only attacks teenagers. You're in your forties or something.

[00:08:22] It was for the joke, but we're getting the story as part of the joke. And then here, just as part of arguments and people thinking she's just trying to get attention for telling her story, not even letting her finish and stuff like that. But you get the story bit by bit. Yep. So anyway, want to go first with points? Sure. I want to talk about poor Patricia because man, do I sympathize.

[00:08:50] Guys, we moved across the country last year, first to Pittsburgh, then to Boston. And oh, thank God, sometimes I'm so crushingly lonely. And unlike Patricia, though, I have a healthy dose of I don't care what people think. So I would tell the mean girls to fuck all the way off. But that's just me. It's a little harder when you're on an island in a small community. Yes, you can't tell everyone to. If they're going to treat you like that, then yes.

[00:09:19] But then it's just even harder because it's like, oh, my God, everybody here knows each other. And there's not that many people, potential friend material. Right. Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. But I think she can do better. I think that there are other potential friends that she can be. Well, even at the end when Tom and Whit come to pick her up. And the look on her face. That feels like a moment where she's like, okay, this is close enough to being my friend. They need me.

[00:09:46] And I love the mean girls at the party. I mean, I didn't love them. I hated the mean girls at the party. Yeah. But they were so mean in a very specific way. Yes. She comes to the door and she's clearly invited, but she was not welcome. Which, oh, God, why invite her? The glassware that they're all precious about. I think they didn't think she would show because she doesn't usually.

[00:10:13] Because they were surprised that she actually did show up. But you're right. Still, why even invite her? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We didn't see that. Right. We didn't see her get invited. No, but she's. I don't remember. But she referenced. She said. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, told me to come by. Right. Right. But yeah. And I hated it. He said to her, take a picture of us. But, you know, clearly we don't want you in the picture, even though we could have just put a timer on the camera. Right.

[00:10:44] Or taken turns. Yes. But not only did. I mean, that's always a thing, right? When you're with people and who do you choose to take the picture? And usually somebody's husband will volunteer. And then somebody else will say, can we get the waiter? We got to get Tom in here. Yeah. And then, but this time it's like, let's choose you just because then you're the perfect person because we actually don't want you in the picture. And not only do they not invite her, but then she says, okay, now all my friends gather together just to really put a pin in it.

[00:11:13] Like, I want you to understand that you're not in this group. Oh. And she's so like, tries to just let it roll off and be pleasant through all of it. Yes. She even says she can, she says, say wine and cheese and nobody says it. Yeah. I mean, she brought the wine and the woman said, sure. Uh, you know, should I open this? Sure.

[00:11:39] We're all drinking white, but if you want to feel free, that's just another subtle way of saying, yeah, you're not included in us. You do your thing. And then they're talking about the husband's snoring and she tries to fit in. My dad snored so that my mom made him sleep on the couch and they just kind of sneer at her and go back to talking. It reminded me, I've been thinking about this kind of thing lately.

[00:12:01] It reminded me of this time when I was with, uh, at a, it was like a party to help an acquaintance of mine prepare things for her wedding reception. She was about to get married and I, it was like a bunch of people that I didn't quite feel included with, but wanted to. And a lot of them knew each other for a long time and I didn't know them that well. And they were all laughing and having a fun time.

[00:12:30] And I was kind of sitting there just feeling kind of weird because I wasn't talking to anybody. And there was this one woman who I did sort of know. So I went up and just sat by her and started talking to her, just trying to make small talk to try to find an avenue into something that might be more interesting. So I wouldn't feel like a loser sitting by myself. And she turned to me and she goes, I feel like you're wanting something from me. And I was like, no, no, I'm not wanting anything.

[00:13:00] I'll talk to you later. Bye. That was like 20 years ago and I still haven't forgotten it. I'm like, ah, kill me. That is awful. I know. I mean, I, I've realized over time that, um, well, a few things, this really got me thinking cause I've all the self help is this of it and

[00:13:28] everything that I'm generally not that good when I'm focused on trying to connect. I'm better when I'm focused on doing something else with other people rather than on how I'm being with them. So that's why podcasting is great. Cause we're talking about stories and TV shows, right? Otherwise it can get a little bit awkward where I'm trying too hard or just self-conscious about how I'm being. And then I'm, then you don't quite job, like kind of trying to tell the wrong story or just talk too loud or whatever.

[00:13:57] And so then I also realized that when I feel like my standing with someone is at stake or I'm losing standing with someone, or I'm just not in good standing with someone that I want to be in good standing with, I can get worked up about that. So I'm not natural, you know, I'm self-conscious and I'd be just like Patricia at this party, like trying to fit in, but being awkward about it. But you know, at this point in my life, I've gotten to the point where I would just be like, they're being rude to me. I don't care.

[00:14:26] I'm not going to go home. But, and then I also figured out, you know, you kind of do your own thing and then you attract whoever that attracts and those are your people. But to get to that place for me, it took self-help books, therapy, journaling, meditation, retreats, talks with friends, heartbreak, all kinds of. Yeah. It was a journey. It took a lot. Yeah. To get to that place. Finally got there.

[00:14:50] And one thing I realized too, that really is so interesting to me is I felt like I was trying to go out and make things happen with people that it wasn't naturally happening with. And I realized, you know what? I'm at my best when I'm around my already existing friends, which I have dear friends that I've had since some like fourth grade, my friends, Dan and Eric and Tim, and some of them I've had as co-hosts on Podcastica.

[00:15:20] I mean, it's just part of how to be happy in life is find your people and appreciate them. You know? Yep. Exactly. Exactly. One reason why I liked this episode is it got me thinking about all that kind of stuff that I love to think about. Well, I think that speaking of self-help books, like at this point she was even more vulnerable to an evil book. Like this book was perfect for where Patricia was at this very moment.

[00:15:50] She was ready. She was ready. Right. Which I feel like whoever or whatever left it with her kind of knew that, that she'd be the perfect quote unquote host. The island. On more than one level. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Out with the old, in with the you. So great. So one last thing about Patricia at the party. Yeah. We learn about her and the boogeyman.

[00:16:17] And it's been mentioned a few times. We don't know what to believe. Oh, I guess we already talked about this. A little bit. Yeah. A little bit. Yeah. We learned, I think what we learned here is that he had been calling her and breathing and then hanging up. Yep. And I don't even know if we knew that she hid under the bed. He came to her house and she hid under the bed or, I mean, I would give her the benefit of the doubt and believe everything she said.

[00:16:44] An alternative thing could be just that she thought it was him because she'd been hearing stories, you know, because like her friend, well, not her friend. I keep saying that the mean girl, his name is Chris said like my friends, you know, one hit in the dryer and he turned it on and the other one was hiding under the pool cover, but he was waiting there for her and he couldn't find you under the bed. And so who knows? Maybe Patricia just thought it was him, but because it's Widow's Bay and all this fucked up shit is going on, I'm going to believe Patricia. Yeah.

[00:17:13] I think that she almost did die, but got away from it. And I think Patricia believes it. It seems to be something. She absolutely does. Yeah. No question. Yeah. Yeah. And that's like this, it was interesting. This woman, Chris, you know, she's such a, you just want to punch her in the face. I don't advocate punching women or anybody, but you know what I mean? Just like, God, you fucking suck.

[00:17:40] Like, and then at the end, towards the end at the sunset cocktail parties, when you hear her go, seriously, what the fuck is on her head? Which is great. Cause then you realize she was talking about antlers and not a tiara. But then Patricia decides, you know what? She's feeling emboldened enough. Cause the party's going pretty well. Why are you always so nasty to me?

[00:18:05] And she says, you know, that what I just said about how the boogeyman killed her friends and she thinks Patricia's lying and Patricia stands up for herself. And then Chris goes, just let it go. My friends died and you're just so starved for attention. You had to make that about you. And for one thing, I was glad for them to get all this stuff that had been under the surface out in the open. Cause if there's any way through it, that might be it.

[00:18:32] But also it did make me feel a little more sympathetic towards Chris. Cause now I understand that she probably just was traumatized by her friends dying. And she thought that this girl at school who she probably already thought was kind of weird was lying to get attention. And she just that calcified that was her story. And that's the story she told everyone else. And I don't think you should do that. That's why I've mentioned several times on podcasts.

[00:18:59] One of my favorite movie quotes is Catherine Hepburn in the Philadelphia story, where she said the time to make up your mind about people is never like the best thing for Chris to do would be a hate. We're grownups now. And Patricia's still talking about this. Maybe there's some truth in it and I should listen to her. But still it, that moment where she said that to her, like my friends died and you're just making this about you. It made me feel like it humanized her just a little bit. It wasn't so black and white for me. Yeah.

[00:19:27] Except a couple of things. One is that this party is just going to reinforce all the pre-existing things, thoughts that she has about poor Patricia. Poor Patricia. Yeah. This is not going to be good for her. Yeah. They need a couple's therapy session, but it's not going to happen. No, no, it will not. All right. What's your point? All right.

[00:19:57] Let's talk about this book. Yeah, let's do it. So she sees the book in the donation box. Your Turn Out, The Old In With The New by Lucy Fours. In with the U. Get it, everybody? In with the U. Lucy Fours. Lucy Fours. Lucy Fours. I have every word that we could possibly read from the book. Do you really? Oh, I'm so glad you found that. I looked for every word. I wrote down a lot, but I looked for it.

[00:20:27] Yeah, I mean, some of it you couldn't read. But the back of the book blurb says, forget every other self-help book you've ever read because it's your turn. Your turn is the proven step-by-step method to turn your life around. People all over the world are saying, out with the old and in with the U. And here's what else. Learn to dress and look right wherever you go. And then there's more, but it's not as readable. Something about cocktail party of the year. Food and especially the right punch. That's important. Yes. Something about popular.

[00:20:56] So it seems like it's about planning the perfect party to prove your social worth. And then I also noticed that there's a fly that landed on the book. In the basket. In the basket. And while she was reading it too. And they made us not question that because there was some garbage in there and she was mad that people were throwing garbage in her book donation book. But later we know it's because it's actually a rancid old gnarly book, probably bound in flesh. Yes, exactly. Exactly.

[00:21:27] It's a grimoire, which probably naturally attracts flies. Probably smells bad. Yeah. It probably does. Did you notice on the very last page when she finally opened it up and saw really what it was and she flips to the very back that there's black mold near the binding? Oh. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Just like the black mold that was in the hotel. Oh, wow. Okay.

[00:21:55] So that's a sign of the presence of the evil maybe? Yep. Yep. Yeah. So in the book, it says, congratulations, you've just taken the first step on the road to discovering the power within. And there's a book sheet with sections to answer. What do you love about yourself? With like two lines. Yes. Like lines. What do you hate about yourself? Or what was the other one? What don't you love about yourself? That it was like the rest of the page. Yep. Yep.

[00:22:25] Yep. Yep. Yep. And I liked what she wrote. She loves her generosity and kind heart, but doesn't love I care too much what other people think. And that's, I can identify with that sometimes, although much less now than I used to be. But what do you love about yourself, Karen? I also love my generosity and kind heart. Sure, I'll go with that. You are, yeah. That's Patricia. You volunteer at animal shelters and you give platelets. I do.

[00:22:55] I don't know if you still do, but you did. Yeah. Heck yeah. Karen's a good one. Aw. Same. It's true. Back at ya. I used to give platelets. I love the illustration of the naked woman. Circle the things you don't like about yourself with the weird pubic hair. Did you notice that? I noticed. Yeah. It's so freaky. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:23:23] It reminded me of like movies where it's about sororities and they have to like strip down of their underwear and then somebody comes and marks their body. Oh, so bad. Then it was, then another one, how to throw a party. Feeling like you could die tomorrow and no one would notice? Well, that could be, but the right party can change that. Are you ready to be the perfect hostess? The perfect hostess exudes confidence, effortless and elegant. Suddenly everyone knows you as someone who throws great parties.

[00:23:53] All it takes is one to change people's minds. All it takes is one great party to change your life. And watching this, I was like, maybe I should throw a party. That would be fun. It got me wanting to, you know? It'll change your life. Have some punch. But it's so funny that as you watch through the second time, it's clear that the book is purely a way to get a bunch of people together to drink this punch and hear this incandation.

[00:24:19] So they will drown themselves as a sacrifice to Satan. Yes, exactly. Exactly. Did you notice in one of the illustrations of the party in full swing that there was cocaine on the table, an illustration of cocaine on the table with a big pile of cocaine? Oh, wow. Yeah, it was fabulous. I froze it. I was like, David, is that coke? Are those lines of coke? He's like, yeah, that's what that is. The art was great.

[00:24:47] It was very stylish and appealing. And I imagine there's just a spell on this book. So she doesn't see it for what it is from the start. I'm certain that from the minute she touched the book, the book was like, you're mine. And from the minute she started reading it, that she was under its spell. Spell.

[00:25:12] And we even know that because when Bashir watches, he's looking for the sea hag, and he's watching the security footage, and he sees her. And all night long, she's reading the book. Very paranormal activity. Very, yeah. The one thing about that scene, because she saw it as a self-help book before she even touched it.

[00:25:42] So there was some spell on it already, you'd think. But when Bashir was looking at the footage, it looked like a normal book there, too. And I think that was sort of dramatic license concession for the story because they didn't want to give it away to us. Like, why is she reading that weird book? Right. Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. I also, I don't know if you noticed when she first starts reading the book, she's sitting

[00:26:06] there at the picnic table by the beach, and there's a bike crash right next to her. Did you notice that? Yeah. And then they start fighting. And she doesn't notice. No. Yeah. And I wondered if the point of that was just to show that she's deeply entranced and doesn't notice this, even a crazy thing happening to her, or if there's just sort of aggression surrounding Gary because of the book. The latter. It's a book, man. Yeah. Making bad things happen.

[00:26:35] Yeah, exactly. And I get, like, we heard about the Sunset Cocktails party last episode, and, you know, just assumed it was part of the planned festivities for this first weekend of tourism, which it is. But I guess it was instigated because of this book. Like, if she hadn't found this book, I don't think that would have happened, right? Yeah. That's why the Sunset Cocktails party is happening. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So a few more.

[00:27:00] The one page says the punch recipe, and it has a normal punch recipe, vodka, ginger, ginger ale, basil, ice. Yeah. But it says on the next page, most importantly, keep the alcohol flowing. People are always more fun after a few or a few more drinks. With the added benefit that alcohol is truth serum, you're sure to have some interesting conversations with alcohol in everyone's system.

[00:27:26] Have you always wondered what your coworker really thinks about you and the other coworkers? Oh, my God. Oh, my God. The other one says, one's called Venue Know It, You Know It, Designing Your Perfect Party Space. One says, wait, I'm just seeing if, oh, it's about, I think it's about the punch. Most people think of time in hours, minutes, and seconds. Yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future.

[00:27:52] Right now barely lasts long enough to think about, which is why so many people ask when and want an answer in the form of a date or time. But by the time you finish your turn, you'll know that the answer is always now. So get that punch ready. It's going to be a success because it's your turn. Unless the turnout is low, that's a verdict on your social value. Oh, my God. That's so fucked up. So that's really pressuring her to get a lot of people together for this sacrifice. Oh, my God.

[00:28:22] One more. This is a bit long, but I think it's really funny. Let's hear it. How are your conversation skills? Now's the time to hone up on how to have an engaging and non-combative dialogue with your guests. Be sure to always greet everyone with an effortless smile as if you are delighted to see them, but are also somewhat aloof and mysterious. Take time in your hostess duties to move around the room, spotting anyone needing some attention and even directing people to engage with each other. Before the party, spend some time writing down fun facts about your guests so that you can

[00:28:51] share these to spur topics of conversation. Dan likes to take strolls by the moonlight. Cynthia always wears a locket that her grandmother gave her when she was seven, and she says it will haunt her if she removes it. Robert says he sold his soul to the devil to play the guitar like a master. Oh, my God. Amanda likes to paint dead animals, still life oil painting. Matthew is afraid of the dark and has to sleep with the nightlights. It's like it knows the secrets about people or something.

[00:29:18] You know, interesting personal tidbits that make people special, but also might prompt an exchange about others' interests, superstitions, or fears. Don't forget to play matchmaker, both for yourself and the other single people that intend. Now is the time to connect with one another. And when there is enough alcohol, people let down their guards and become more uninhibited, which is where the real fun happens. Wow. I like how it got dark in there. Very dark and very specific. Yeah.

[00:29:46] I also enjoy how the book seems to be, it changes a little bit and it talks to her almost. Yeah. When it says, now is a great time for the toast. And then it says, at one point it says, now is a great time. But she's just like, okay. Okay. Now is a great time to serve the punch. And she's like, yeah, to who? Because nobody had arrived yet. And then later it said, serve the punch now. Yeah.

[00:30:17] And I guess, I mean, as, see, I wish, I wish I hadn't watched this high the first time. Because I can't remember if I was noticing the oddness. I'm sure you must, because it's Widow's Bay. I did notice it. And I was not high. You did notice like, what is going on? Yes. I mean, one thing I noticed in this one that I definitely didn't notice before. And I'm skipping ahead a little because we're going to get into the party. But when she's, the party's in full swing and everybody's dancing after they've had the punch.

[00:30:47] And it's the rhythm of the night. And she's in the middle. And they're all facing her. And she's like the queen of the party. And they're all happy, having a good time. But then as the camera is panning around in a circle, there's a flash of just a few people behind her with their jaws wide open. Like that. Yes. But you barely see it. And there's also, there's two shots of the mirror where you can see them with their jaws hanging open. There's one really quick shot.

[00:31:16] I only saw the second one. There's a really quick shot. And it's because she's dancing like a maniac. And she's so dazzling in her dance moves that you're just looking at Patricia going for it. It's hard to avert your eyes over. But at one point when they pan the crowd and she's giving her speech and they really showed the mirror. Oh, yeah.

[00:31:40] But you notice it more probably the second time when you know that it was all sort of not what you're seeing. Wasn't really what was going on. So you're looking for signs. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. All right. What next? Okay. Well, let's get into, let's get into the party. Yeah. The party was so great. I mean, this episode had so many funny moments.

[00:32:09] The party was the funniest before it went bad. It was so funny. I loved it so much. I loved that she kind of gets into crazy party gal that she gives an insane list of things for Rosemary to pick up. And it starts Rosemary on this path.

[00:32:33] I love that Rosemary is like, I'm getting a crazy list of items for your punch. I'm listening to you. I have qualms. You're wearing something crazy on your head. And we all, we just think because it's Rosemary that she's just being snarky about Patricia's little cute tiara.

[00:32:54] But then when you find out that she was buying like animal pelts or something and that she saw this big horn thing, then you picture her going, I don't, she wants me to be supportive. But this is really crazy. So I'm going to say something. And then later she, Patricia's like, why didn't you say something? I told you. She goes, you have qualms. Well, I wanted to be supportive. Perfect answer. Perfect Rosemary answer. That made it.

[00:33:21] I'm so glad they decided to have Rosemary not drink the punch. And you realize she saw everything that was happening the whole time. I was just like keeping quiet because she didn't want to offend her. She didn't understand one word of the toast. Yeah. Yeah. I had qualms. Whoever added that bit, you just elevated an already great episode to be the best. I also love that Patricia's, the couple, the tourists come in and Patricia's, nobody else is there.

[00:33:51] And she says, here's the dance floor in case you want to get your groove on. Also, hey, here's Dr. Calvin Morgan. He's sure to have some great medical stories. And he says, I'm off the clock tonight, Patricia. And then Ruth says, I've got a good one for you. It started in the foot. Great. But then the next part was my favorite. Can I tell it? Yes.

[00:34:18] Where Patricia tells Rosemary, oh, these guests are hanging out at the entrance. I was trying to address the room, you know? And she nods like, don't worry, I've got you. And then turns around. All right, fogos. Let's go. Let's go. She's like, no, no, no, no, no. God, I just want to scream, all right, fogos. That's so funny. I mean, this was perfect, right? It was a perfect episode. It really was. I give it a 10. It really, really was.

[00:34:48] I also love one more thing that I've got to say was really funny. She's, who's the, Dale's the DJ. And he's playing, this is how we do it. And she's like, this is great. This is how we do it. This is amazing. And she's like, okay, come on. Party. All right. And then the advertisement comes on affected by male pattern baldness. See how we do it. And then she says, why is there an ad? And he says, I don't have premium.

[00:35:19] I feel you, honey. I liked when she handed him, she's like, how many people have RSVP'd to the party? And she's kind of upset because they were already, they were complaining about her when she came in. And she's also worried that nobody's coming to a party. So he hands her the RSVP paper showing that none have. And she goes, zero people. Why did you even hand me this? Just say no one's RSVP'd. And he goes, I didn't want to.

[00:35:52] Jeff Taylor, chef's kiss. No, no. And then she uses her like municipal power to cancel the Elks Lodge party so that everyone will come to hers, which worked beautifully. Good job. Which did work. I mean, she's under the spell of the book at that point. The book is telling her. I mean, she's like, you know, she's got this mean girl that's opposing her. So she's standing up to her. I liked it. She's pulling out all the stops. Do you know about the Elks Lodge, by the way?

[00:36:22] I know of the Elks Lodge. I think it's a national organization. Yeah. I only know because Jenny has a home in Urae that we rent out. It's Colorado. It's a little mining town of like 200 people or something. And we were staying there when it wasn't rented for vacation. And we got invited to the Elks Lodge party. Oh, that's nice. And they had a bar.

[00:36:52] And it was interesting. It felt like small town life, right? They're these. It's a fraternal organization. Been around for hundreds of years. It's like a social club, a community center, a charitable organization like that. Yeah. But it's like the center of the social fabric of this town. And they wanted us. They asked if we wanted to join because I think they thought we might be living there, you know? And I thought, well, if we did live here, we probably should consider joining this. But we're not.

[00:37:22] So we didn't. But it was kind of fun just to. So did you say, all right, Fuggos? All right, Fuggos, we're out of here. We live in SF. Peace out. So what else about the party? The Bachelorette show up. I guess those are Marissa's friends, the woman from last week. Yeah. They actually exist. They do. Yeah. Yeah. Although I didn't see Marissa. Did you? No.

[00:37:49] And she had said we did shots and then we got a cab. So maybe she was there, actually. We should go back and look. She might have been. She might have been. I feel like a bad podcaster for not noticing. Yeah. I mean, my guess if she wasn't there is, you know, they hire an actor for one episode and they wouldn't want to have her just make a little cameo in another one and have to pay for it or something. I don't know.

[00:38:19] Yeah. Yeah. The timing is right, though, because. Yeah. Yeah. It's earlier in the day. Or it's it's it would have been. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That makes sense. Because they hear the chief going, I don't know what the fuck is going on at the end of last week. Right. Right. Right. Right. Right. Right. Yeah. That's after everything happened with the sea hag and stuff. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Exactly. Well, the party doesn't go.

[00:38:49] I mean, it party goes great until it doesn't pretty good until it doesn't go great. It's every you could tell it's everything she was hoping for. She looks so happy. And and then Bashir comes and breaks the spell and makes me makes me a little sad because he was talking to his wife, having a funny conversation. They're definitely looking to leave the island, move to near Boston.

[00:39:15] And his poor wife is probably wondering, where the fuck is my mint chip ice cream that you promised me? Yeah. And he said he had already picked it up. So he's got the mint chip. Yeah. He should have called her and said, oh, I'm sorry, honey. Something came up. It's melting in my truck. And and then he breaks the spell, goes and tells Patricia, Patricia, what the fuck is going on? That was such a great moment. Oh, my God. Because there was a pause.

[00:39:43] He goes, this is a real concern look on his face. What the fuck are you doing? And I'm like, oh, what is he talking about? And then the camera pans down and you see, I thought she was chopping the strawberries in a strange way. And it turns out they weren't strawberries. That might have been the crow that she was butchering or or raven. It's hard to tell if it was a raven or a crow. Yeah. I kind of think it was a crow. Well, ravens are more.

[00:40:13] More exotic, right? Edgar Allen Poe-ish. Yeah. OK. Let's go with raven. Who knows? She was she was chopping a raven and there was blood and also other strange things. Maybe some hair. I don't know. Roots. Perhaps. Yeah. Like exotic herbs. I have new. Yeah. Something like that. And then she looks into the mirror, which has a piece of tape on it that says smile like your tip depends on it.

[00:40:42] And then the spell is broken. And she yells at Rosemary. Then, yeah, goes back out and sees the aftermath of the party because they've all gone down to the beach for the bonfire and sees like some weird thing in a drink with blood. Yep. Some kind of weird organic thing. I couldn't tell what it was. Yeah. A root or a berry casing or something like that. And then she sees the book. Yep. With satanic looking drawings inside.

[00:41:12] Grimoire with the with the illustration of people walking into the beach. And she also sees the effigy, which is that kind of what I mean, that I imagine that's a little bit what Burning Man is like. Yeah, not really. I mean, sort of. Burning Man is like 20 feet tall at this point. Just the man.

[00:41:37] And that's at the top of a four story, you know, structure. Well, maybe that's a bit tall. Two story structure. So it's huge. I had no idea. I did not know that. Yeah, I mean, that might be what Burning Man started out more like. Yeah. This thing. Yeah. Yeah. But anyway. Yeah. It's just it feels like a satanic sacrifice, which I can imagine might make some people

[00:42:05] watching this uncomfortable just because of the nature of it. And I don't blame you if you feel that way. But don't worry, because she burns the grimoire in the bonfire, which releases everybody from their spell. Yeah. And saves the day. Good guys won. And it was cool to have it where the book. She couldn't let go of it. It wouldn't let her. So she sort of it felt like sacrificed her own, you know, risk burning herself.

[00:42:33] I think she was OK, but she just stuck it in the fire. Yep. Exactly. And then you're like, OK, I mean, it was OK. So a few things. Seeing the people in the mirror with their jaws wide open during the dancing, it was already I was already loving the episode. But that just oh, my God, it's where it's like that whole fight club thing where suddenly everything is different than you thought it was. Yeah. I love that so much. And then you're like, oh, my God, it's a ritual. What is going on?

[00:43:02] What else is am I not seeing? That's not the way it is. Or you know what I mean? That's what does it seem like is one way and is really the other. And then when the sheriff comes in and what the fuck are you doing here? That just really brought it home. Like, oh, God, what are we about to see? And then they didn't let us down with what you did see. And then going out and seeing like pluribus style, like these. Pod people. Ocean is so fucked up.

[00:43:31] And then she saves the day. And, you know, it was a little bit easy. But you realize that the sheriff saved the day, really, because if he hadn't shown up, then it would have been a bad opening weekend for tourist season. Widows Bay. So I think the sheriff saved the day. I think he did, too. And Patricia, too, of course. Yeah. And then when Chris started, the mean girl started saying, she drugged us. And I'm like, oh, God, you're the worst.

[00:44:00] And then I'm like, well, but also it's not too far from the truth. But it wasn't her fault. Like, she was under a spell. It was totally unintentional. She was just trying to throw a party. She was just trying to throw a party. It's not her fault. Oh, it makes me so sad. At least she has Tom and Wick. Yeah. And I love it when near the end when they pick her up and she tells him something went wrong with the party. And Wick says, file it under. File it under. Deal with it the fuck later.

[00:44:29] And Tom says, why don't you just get in with us? We might need your help. And the look on her face like, oh, they need me. It was great. It was. And she's probably like, it's a relief to be with friends after something like that. Mm-hmm. And it's, yeah, in an episode with a lot of fucked up stuff, it was very Widow's Bay to end on that. Yeah. It wasn't actually the end, but it was a nice moment for the end of her story, which the whole thing was. The end of her story.

[00:44:57] And then they see the hanging reverend. And what was great about that is it's just horrific and upsetting. And I don't think, because we're doing podcasting now, I really hadn't put it together. I just thought, oh, who's that guy hanging? Probably. That's how closely I pay attention to stories. But podcasting, you realize, okay, it's this reverend who was upset that the bell was ringing and then went to the well and heard something. And that was enough for him to kill himself.

[00:45:24] And then, so, but anyway, you end on this horrific image of this reverend being hanged and then Tom's face being horrified. And then there's a pause. And then it goes, it's the rhythm of the night. And I'm like, it really is the rhythm of this night. You know, it was such a perfect way to end it. Perfect ending. And one note, did you notice in the desk, he had scratched my eye as open? Just putting it there just is an interesting thing.

[00:45:54] Okay. I'm sure there's all kinds of things that he left behind and they'll sort through it. But also, I hated the look on Tom's face. Yeah. Because this guy was his friend. Yeah. Yeah. It's awful. He's a good guy. Yeah. Poor Tom. It's horror. You got to have some sacrifices in there, I guess. Yeah. It's what it was, Bayman. Definitely not cursed. Is this the first, it's not the first death, is it?

[00:46:20] I think the guy who was out on the fishing boat in the first episode died. Mm-hmm. He died. And I guess the sea hag died. Maybe we don't care about that. Yes, the sea hag did die. William probably, in the hotel, William probably wasn't real. Yeah. So tragic. Anything else or any notes? Okay.

[00:46:50] I only had two notes. One, so I said I thought Patricia had an ex-husband, but I think I was wrong about that. I think I was just reading into that conversation she had with Wick when he was telling the story about the former mayor of town who turned off the lighthouse to make the ships crash because he, quote, coveted the captain's young bride. And then he and Patricia started talking about age gap relationships. Yes.

[00:47:18] She said, I think an older man falling in love with a young woman is sometimes okay as a one-off. It's when they start hitting on their young friends after a breakup that really crosses the line. And I just presumed she was talking from experience that maybe she had a breakup and they started hitting on young women. But if I had to guess now, I would just say that she's lonely and she's getting older and she's like, I want to attract someone. And if these guys are all going for younger women, where does that leave me or something like that? You know?

[00:47:48] Yeah. I think that's right. And I also am not 100% certain that she is looking for a dude. It's true. Yeah. I think she's looking for a friendship. Yeah. Yeah. This episode, definitely. You're right. We don't even have any indication that she's looking for romance at all. But she is very much seems to be concerned with her age. That's a soft spot with her. Yeah. Well, her biological age is 28, so she's fine. She's fine.

[00:48:16] And then second, I wonder if they decided to name Tom Loftus Tom Loftus because he has lofty aspirations. Oh, that's interesting. Potentially. Yeah, maybe. Maybe. Tom Loftus. Fun thing also, the writer and the director were first time writer and director. No way. Which is interesting. Oh my God. I think so. I know. So good. I know.

[00:48:44] Mackenzie Doerr is the writer and Sam Donovan is the director. Yeah. I wonder if she's written anything else. Hit it out of the ballpark. Yeah. Good job.

[00:49:20] All right. Should we get into some feedback? Let's do. The first one comes from Nan Imus who says, my favorite episode, my favorite character. Yep. Me too. Hmm. Dawn says, firstly, I want to say I found the Widow's Bay feed and followed and rated. Hopefully other people did too because your coverage is great. Thank you, Dawn. Thanks, Dawn. So nice. Then she says, I'm not going to lie. I actually had a really hard time with this one as an awkward 40 something woman who often

[00:49:48] finds herself not fitting in with groups of women. Her whole journey was so visceral. Her whole journey was so visceral to me, especially her humiliation at the end. I felt so bad for her. After everything she was trying to do, how will she ever come back from that? How will she ever be able to sleep without reliving it again and again? Wow. Wow. That probably says more about me than I normally share. This is an episode for sharing. At least I can have some hope those women don't survive the series so she can have peace again.

[00:50:17] I don't know if that would give her peace. That said, I really love this episode and the show overall. Patricia is my favorite. Weird as we are, awkward middle-aged women who struggle to make friends have stories to tell too. And it's lovely to see one done so well. I'm always so captivated when a show has me feeling a lot good, bad, and uncomfortable. Me too. Same thing. This show is all of that and then some. Season two cannot come soon enough. P.S. Jason, watch The Americans. It's amazing and you're missing out. I've heard that from more than one person.

[00:50:46] Someone said we should do a podcast about it and I would be totally open to that except I have to focus on things that might get more downloads. And if I knew for sure that an Americans podcast would get enough downloads to bring in ad money, then I would say, yeah, let's do it. They need to bring back the Americans, which they could with the original cast if they brought it back and then you would go back and do a rewatch with me and I would totally do that with you. Yeah, that'd be cool.

[00:51:15] Lisa Edmondson Walker writes, Don, I can really relate to your feelings about the episode and how painful it is not to fit in and be rejected by your peers. Women can be pretty cruel to other women and keep their clicks tight against others. It helps if we can find our people, but in a situation where you can't, it's awkward and hard. And Don said, whatever, Lisa. No, I'm just kidding. She did not say that. She did not. She said, oh, for sure. Much like Patricia, I've got my small but solid group of people. Oh, that's lovely.

[00:51:44] One other thing I'm going to recommend is that if you're listening to this podcast, you might be interested in joining the Podcastica community, the Discord community, because if you're listening to this podcast and you're enjoying it, we're your people. Yeah. So you've found your people. You should. And you should join if you're, well, this is all from the Podcastica group. So you're in it. You know, my Patreon used to be a lot more social too.

[00:52:15] I hate even turning this into an appeal for somebody to pay me something. But it just got me thinking, like, we used to do a lot more, like, monthly call-ins. And people made friends from that. And then they started, like, having meetups. And there was just one in Montreal this year. And now they're talking about doing another one. And there's a lot of East Coasters. So Karen meets up with.

[00:52:41] I just last weekend met up with two amazing women who I found through this podcast, Penny and Veronica. And it was amazing. And they are incredible women. They are. One lives in Tennessee and one lives here in Boston. And it made me so happy. I felt like, wow, this is how you make friends. Yay! Yeah, at some point I'm going to go out to Boston and visit Karen.

[00:53:09] And whatever weekend that is, I would like to invite anyone in the area to come to some bar that we'll figure out and have a meetup. That'll be fun. But, yeah, man, this used to be more communal. And maybe I can bring it back to that. I don't know. I feel like people in some ways have moved past that. But maybe not.

[00:53:28] But anyway, if you guys, like I said, I used to do a monthly call-in Zoom thing over Patreon for Patreon people. And that sort of got the social things flowing. We do game nights, especially over COVID. We were meeting like two, three times a week doing game nights and stuff like that. It kept everybody sane. It was great. Anyway, if anybody's interested in doing more stuff like that, let me know. That's how you find your people. Yeah.

[00:53:58] And it's a great group. It's like, you know, Karen and I started this back in 2010 with Walking Dead cast. And it just felt like us talking to each other. But then I started doing those conventions. And I decided to have meetups because it was a Walking Dead convention. And I did a Walking Dead podcast. So I figured some listeners would be there. And I was nervous at first, like, oh, is this going to be weird or awkward? Or what kind of people are going to show up? And it ended up being the best part of the weekend in some ways.

[00:54:26] And so I did it almost every convention over the course of, like, six years. And that's how I started bringing in listeners as hosts and stuff like that, you know. And I think the vibe, if I can say so myself, the vibe of the podcast that we put out really attracted non-mean girl type people. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know, cool people. No mean girls. No mean guys. It's all good. Yeah. It's all good. Okay. We have a couple more. We have two more calls. Here's Jenny Ryan.

[00:54:55] Oh, she wrote, by the way, yikes, in the recording, I referenced a show called Everyone Else Dies, but it's actually Everyone Else Burns. Here we go. It sounds fun. Hello, Jenny here. I was inspired by your talk about when you were extras in The Walking Dead and how you didn't have to get makeup because you were already scary enough. When I was an extra in movies when I was in university, it was my part-time job, I was once on a set where I had to play a nerd and I just showed up in my own clothes.

[00:55:25] And then they were like, oh, perfect. You don't need a costume. You look like such a loser already. No, they didn't. So funny. So funny. Anyway, also, you did not mention when you were talking about what other shows these guys have been in. Check out Matthew Rhys in the Perry Mason reboot. It was two seasons, I think, set in the 20s. It was very cool. 30s, maybe.

[00:55:49] And Kate O'Flynn was very, very funny in a show a couple years ago called Everyone Else Dies, in which she plays a frustrated evangelical wife. Anyway, there is a Patricia-centric episode coming up. Not this one, but the next one that I have problems with. And it's The Black Mark on the Other West Perfection of Widows Bay. So I can't wait to see if you share my frustrations or if I alone am annoyed by it. Okay, bye-bye.

[00:56:17] I know the episode, but I don't remember it at all. So we'll see. No, I don't either. Yeah. All right. Thanks, Jenny. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on that one. And here's a call from Steve Brown. Hello, Action Psonic. This is Steve, and this is going to be for Widows Bay episode Beach Reads. I think I kind of remember this. It's going to back up, right? And, um, but I remember being very confused during this episode the first time I watched it. All right. Four days earlier from the fire at the whole cocktail hour, Sunset Cocktail.

[00:56:45] I'm trying to remember because the last episode, Inaugural Swim, really brought in the supernatural kind of thing with the hag. But this one is more psychological if I remember correctly. Oh, there was a Stephen King book in the box. I didn't see which one, though. Oh, Patricia Awkward walks in and nobody's looking at you or even talking to you. And Patricia meets a friend, Shelby. Oh, Patricia starts to talk about the boogeyman and some awkward guest just bumps into her and spills wine all over her. Yeah.

[00:57:11] Oh, and now they're talking about her while she was out of the room and she overhears them telling Shelly that she's crazy. Oh, and this Your Turn, I didn't see what the subtitle was, is like a workbook. Huh, you fill out the worksheets in it. I can't read it. What is she circling these on this naked lady of a picture, picture of a naked lady? So she read about how to throw at her party and now she's enlisting Rosemary and this guy, I didn't catch his name, to be the DJ. I've never done that before. Oh, so we have conflicting events.

[00:57:37] We have Bill Rooney's birthday party at the Elks Lodge and Patricia's Sunset Cocktails. Okay. I don't remember the two people crashing into themselves in the background and having this fight with their bikes. So Patricia's got some grief for she can try to cancel Bill Rooney's birthday party. But nobody's RSVP'd yet for your event, Patricia. That's right. The sheriff has, or the mayor has the sheriff looking for the hag on all these video cameras and different cameras around the island. Okay.

[00:58:04] So a few people showed up, a couple of tourists, and some group sets in the tables right near the door. And Patricia doesn't like it. What's happening now, though? She's back in the back room and she's looking at the wine. We hear her leave the message that Tom hurt her in his machine. Oh, and the bachelorette party shows up. I forgot about this. I don't remember what the truth is of this story about the boogeyman, but this Chris girl, is that her name? It's very nasty and mean, but I don't know.

[00:58:29] It's, I struggle with this one because I'm remembering some of how it's going to go, but I don't want to go too long. Oh, the page in the book says serve the punch now like it knows what she's thinking and doing. Crazy. Quite a few people showed up for this swallery. Birthday party at the Elks Lodge was canceled. That's why the mean girls showed up here. And Rosemary's in the back kitchen after this fun party and great toast, and they're all going down to the bonfire now. Oh, that's right. Now we start to see the real vision of what is actually going on, not what's in Patricia's head.

[00:58:58] And the book is not a self-help book. It's some Necronomicon-looking crap. Oh, what was in that punch? These people are walking like zombies. Oh, and the book is stuck to her hand. She can't throw it in the fire. Oh, and she's holding her hand in the fire. And everyone wakes up. Okay. And now Loftus and what's Steve Rusev show up. And now they're at the church. I don't remember what happens. And the priest is on the back of the door hung. Which is it? Okay. It just gets crazier and crazier as the season goes along.

[00:59:27] Talk to you next week. This made me miss Pluribus, that scene. And I just read that Ray Sehorne has read the script for the first episode. And she says, it's insane. Of season two. Oh, oh, excellent. Yeah. Good. I want her to. Okay. So everybody start filming.

[01:00:04] All right. That is our show. Thanks for listening, everybody. Thanks, everybody. Next episode. What is base season one episode five? What to expect on your trip? I have no idea what to expect. I don't remember anything about it. If you want to write in or leave us a voice message about it, you can send it to ignore the warnings at podcast.com. Or you can leave comments, as Karen mentioned earlier, in our podcast discord or in our Facebook

[01:00:30] group where you can chat with us and other listeners about Widows Bay or whatever else you're watching. And I'll put a link in the show notes for that. Yeah. And I do mean that. Let me know if you maybe we could do a non-Patreon like call in where we talk about Widows Bay or watch an episode together or something like that. If anybody's interested in that. I love that. Let me know. I also want to mention this episode made possible by Patreon supporters like Jeff Allen, who

[01:00:57] pledged their support at patreon.com slash Jason Cabassi. Jeff's been a supporter for a long time and I very much appreciate his support and everyone else's who does this because otherwise this podcast would not exist. We're doing I haven't been mentioning Patreon lately because I've been focused more on the non-Patreon stuff, but we're doing a Patreon perk coming up here. Starting in two days, Dexter Resurrection season two comes back. Fun! Do you watch that?

[01:01:25] I have not watched any Dexter. I hear it's great. Yeah, the first show was great until the last couple seasons and then it totally sucked. And then they brought back revived it recently and it's been really, really good. It had Peter Dinklage in the first season and he was awesome as a bad guy. And anyway, we're doing for Patreon Dexter Resurrection roundtable reactions where I'm going to bring

[01:01:51] in a different one or two fans each week and we're going to do like zero prep. We're just going to watch the show, maybe take a couple of notes if you want. And then we'll just do a very loose, informal conversation about that week's episode. So it's meant to be fun. Yeah. And it's going to be it's going to be great because he's so good in that Michael C. Hall. It's a fun show. So it's great. Yay. Yay. Yay. Oh, yeah.

[01:02:18] And we'll have a quick spoiler section at the end. But for now, that is it. That's our show. Thanks for listening. Karen, what the fuck are you doing? Okay. I actually don't have anything for the spoiler. We're in the spoiler section now. If you don't want to hear spoilers, stop listening. Who said they didn't?

[01:02:47] They were glad that we did this. Dawn, I think. Yeah. No, it was one of the reviewers. Dawn, baby, this is for you. Kitty Chick 1212. Yeah, that's right. Stop listening, Kitty Chick. Yeah. What did we say? Stick a pin on it that you cut out earlier? It was about the episode coming up. Well, no. There were two things. One was about the episode coming up with the boogeyman. Maybe that was it. That's the boogeyman episode. Yes. Was the boogeyman real or was it not real?

[01:03:14] And I say, because they are going to have the boogeyman episode coming up, that that confirms all of what Patricia has been saying. Oh, okay. Yeah. Good. Maybe. Watch the episode and see if you agree with me. See if you think that it confirms her priors. I just remember that being a great episode because it felt like Friday the 13th, which was kind of fun, you know? Yeah. Jason Voorhees kind of thing. Right. Exactly. And then what was the other thing?

[01:03:42] We were talking about how, so I had to cut this part out because I thought it might be spoilery, but Karen was saying something that I had actually thought of, which is if the sheriff hadn't shown up and everybody had walked out into the sea and killed themselves, maybe that would have satisfied the sacrifices that the island is asking for. Yeah.

[01:04:04] And then there were at least nine people. The sea hag.

[01:04:34] Yeah. She really didn't count. Yeah. Maybe you could sacrifice like William, the clown and the sea hag, send them down there. Would that count? No. I don't think so. What if they all showed up at the party? Would Patricia like that? That would be a weird party. Monster mash. Really weird party. Bad party.
