[00:00:00] Where's the Rift?

[00:00:08] I got your Rift right here!

[00:00:11] What are you doing?

[00:00:17] Listen up you screwheads.

[00:00:39] You're listening to the Evil Dead Cast.

[00:00:43] Hey everybody, welcome to our podcast. I'm Jason.

[00:00:45] And I'm Richard.

[00:00:46] And I'm Chris.

[00:00:47] And this is the Evil Dead Cast Episode 35 and we're sad.

[00:00:51] Yeah, I'm a little bit sad.

[00:00:54] Yeah, because in case you don't know, I wonder if most people listening to us know, but we're going to be the bearers of bad news today.

[00:01:04] It's, you know, I just went online today to look for news on Ash vs. Evil Dead because I was prepping for the podcast and I don't even do the news, but I was just curious.

[00:01:15] And when I searched for it, there was an article that had just been published about five minutes earlier.

[00:01:22] And I think it was the very first one from Hollywood Reporter saying that Ash vs. Evil Dead has been canceled.

[00:01:28] Boo!

[00:01:30] Yeah, it's official guys. There's going to be no season four.

[00:01:33] The show is done.

[00:01:34] And even though I thought I was ready for it and I was, you know, pretty much thinking this was going to happen, it hit me pretty hard.

[00:01:42] Like I'm really sad.

[00:01:44] Yeah, I agree. I was like, oh man, no! This is like the only, this, I think this is the only show I've ever really gotten this far into.

[00:01:52] I mean, like, you know, emotionally and doing the coverage here on the podcast and all that stuff like you guys do with your other shows.

[00:01:58] Well, you did cry when Mr. Spock died in Star Trek III.

[00:02:03] You said you were never going to tell anybody.

[00:02:07] Now he's announced it to the world.

[00:02:10] Yeah, that was the only time I've ever cried in a movie when Spock died.

[00:02:17] Well, we're obviously bummed, but we're going to, you know, I'm glad we have two more episodes left here.

[00:02:24] We're going to relish that.

[00:02:26] And I also want to invite all of you guys who are listening, anyone who feels like it, to send in your thoughts about the series,

[00:02:34] what the movies and the series have meant to you, anything else you want to say.

[00:02:38] And in our final episode next week, we will read those so you can email to groovy at podcastica.com.

[00:02:45] You can send a voicemail to that email and we'll play it on the podcast or you can call us at 650485-DEAD.

[00:02:52] I'd love to have you guys be a part of that final episode with us.

[00:02:56] That's a really good idea, Jason. Have everyone call in and relate some feelings or memories about Evil Dead because

[00:03:03] it's especially sad because of what Bruce Campbell has been saying, you know, about how this is probably it for Ash and

[00:03:08] he'll never play him again and stuff. And now we're at that moment and that's it.

[00:03:13] Yeah, this and I, you know, they've been saying that the next episode they had it in mind that it could be the last one.

[00:03:20] So it will have, it will feel like an ending of sorts.

[00:03:23] But I'm sure I just have this feeling that, you know, Ash is going to be left in a place that is somewhat unresolved

[00:03:32] and we're going to have to live with that for the rest of our lives.

[00:03:35] Yeah, man.

[00:03:40] I hope not. I hope it's a satisfying ending next week and we can all feel good riding off into the sunset.

[00:03:47] Well, that's what they promised. They promised it was a good ending.

[00:03:51] I'm sure it's, I feel like it's going to be good. But yeah, I wanted to be satisfying like you said, Chris. That'd be awesome.

[00:03:58] Totally. But you know what guys? We still have to get through this week's episode.

[00:04:01] That's right. So let's do it. Let's get into it.

[00:04:20] All right, it's our Dead Cast Top three this week. It's top three highlights for Ash Verzevil Dead Season three episode nine judgment day.

[00:04:27] And it is judgment day and they've judged that the series will be canceled. But anyway, man, also this is crazy.

[00:04:34] But I was just, I just did a Google search of S three E nine, you know, season three episode nine judgment day.

[00:04:41] And what came up was an episode of the series Cosby, which was the Bill Cosby series that came out after his most popular one, the Cosby show.

[00:04:53] There was another show called Cosby in the late 90s. And the ninth episode of the third season of that show was also called judgment day.

[00:05:03] Whoa, it's weird man. It's weird.

[00:05:06] Really, really. Four shadow.

[00:05:08] I mean, there's, you know, that doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I thought it was crazy enough that it was worth mentioning.

[00:05:15] So what do you guys think of this second to last episode of the series?

[00:05:20] I thought it was awesome. This episode played like a movie, man. It was cool.

[00:05:25] Yeah, I had see what it have had a lot of action. There is plenty of blood we got and then my favorite was we got some throwback to the original movies and and the ending.

[00:05:37] Oh my gosh. Yeah, monster movies. I love monster movies.

[00:05:41] So what they left us with at the end with that giant whatever coming out of the ground is getting totally giddy with anticipation for the last episode.

[00:05:49] That's just response was perfect. What did he say?

[00:05:52] Yeah, fuck.

[00:05:57] Yeah, absolutely. They are fucked. I mean, I don't know if I've ever seen a situation on this show where it feels like they're more fucked because the dark ones have the book all together.

[00:06:08] There's deadites all over the town and this big giant monster is right in front of Ash. He doesn't have his chainsaw with him.

[00:06:15] You know what else too? I also liked how the episode started out serious with the poor, what was her name? Zoe, the poor lady.

[00:06:24] Yep, was being tortured and then a few minutes later it gets a little more serious with Pablo explaining what's going on and then when the dark ones showed up, shit got real serious for the whole town.

[00:06:35] I thought that was pretty good progression.

[00:06:37] I agree with you guys. I think it was really, really great and right after that opening bit there sort of the it just they just put the pedal down and this episode was fast moving and action packed and it never really let up once Ash left his house there at the beginning.

[00:06:54] So I think it was great. They did a great job of making it feel like the whole world was ending and I could feel the panic in the town as people were running around and stuff like that.

[00:07:06] And so I thought that was really great. And there was some stuff in this episode that instantly became some of my favorite scenes in the whole show, I think.

[00:07:15] And we'll get into that.

[00:07:17] Wow, that's good because last week you were saying you didn't really like the episode as much but you're like I feel like I'm going to like next week's and it turns out you were right.

[00:07:25] Yeah, totally right. They really, really turned it around on this one for me.

[00:07:29] Well, what's your number three, Chris?

[00:07:32] My number three, well it's I mean this could be my three, two and one but it was Brandy's fight with the evil in the shed.

[00:07:40] This was basically one of my favorite things that I've ever seen on on the show and it wasn't just in the shed.

[00:07:48] It started in the house right when it's chasing her through the house and it's very classic evil dead.

[00:07:53] I loved every second of it and it was so loud, fast and intense and fun and I thought it was just fantastic.

[00:08:04] So once they get into the shed or the garage, you know, the little phone monster was really entertaining and I thought Ariel Carver O'Neill was fantastic.

[00:08:18] This I think was her like crowning achievement on the show so far. She's always been really good but here, you know, the looks on her face when she's about to cut off her arm and run the monster over with the plow thing

[00:08:34] and she goes tell it to the plow and who's laughing now? She just looks totally insane and just everything about it I thought was so great.

[00:08:44] And you guys, you mentioned what Ash says at the end of the episode. She says the same thing here when she realizes that the shotgun is on the ground outside the shed.

[00:08:54] She looks out and goes fuck. I didn't even think of that until you guys mentioned it but it's so good. It's like a father daughter thing, you know?

[00:09:04] So good. The whole thing was amazing and I could watch that scene over and over again. It's just so fun.

[00:09:12] I'm so glad to hear you say that because when I was watching it, I was like, oh no. Somebody's gonna think this is foolish and silly and too kitsch but I was like, oh, this is awesome.

[00:09:21] This is why we fell in love with this show and the movies in the first place.

[00:09:25] Totally. Totally. It feels like old walking dead. I'm walking dead. Sorry. Old evil dead.

[00:09:32] Like you mentioned in the house it started to get tense and what evil dead has always done well is Ash and in this case, Brandy, they're in a place and nothing visually is happening necessarily.

[00:09:48] Maybe a little rattling but what they do with the sound design, it starts rattling and you hear this just in nondescript tension building sounds and then the actor is getting more and more nervous and you just feel the sense of dread because the evil's near but it's not shown up yet.

[00:10:08] That's just so signature to evil dead.

[00:10:12] That's one of the things that makes evil dead totally unique is that style and the way they do that.

[00:10:17] And when you think about it, they really have to rely on their actors for this because you don't see the evil you only see their reactions.

[00:10:26] But it's really effective.

[00:10:28] It's really effective and that's what I mean. The actors do a really, really good job.

[00:10:32] And the camera work too.

[00:10:34] Well, totally. The camera work is part of the style.

[00:10:37] But if you didn't have Bruce Campbell able to make all those faces and all the sounds he makes and I think Ariel Carver O'Neill is just as good at it.

[00:10:48] She proved that in this whole scene I think.

[00:10:51] But it's one of those things like I said that makes evil dead unique.

[00:10:55] They just did so well here.

[00:10:58] I wonder if Bruce was coaching her.

[00:11:01] Well, she just watched a lot of tape.

[00:11:03] When I interviewed her, she said that she and Bruce had worked together on some like mannerisms or something that made it feel like she was his daughter.

[00:11:12] And I didn't really pick up on that so much before now but in this episode there were a few like that.

[00:11:19] Yeah.

[00:11:22] So it was my favorite scene of the episode.

[00:11:26] Favorite almost probably the whole season.

[00:11:29] Just so good.

[00:11:32] And yeah, the little cell phone monster.

[00:11:35] I thought that was a fun way to sort of use modern technology, you know how it can pretend like Brandi's dead mother was calling her and then it bites her thumb off and she has to throw it down.

[00:11:46] Right, we just had to press on the screen.

[00:11:48] Now wait a minute.

[00:11:49] So I was confused because I feel so stupid right now but when it attacked her the little it was like a little puppet almost, right?

[00:11:57] But that was just her phone at the end.

[00:12:00] Yeah, it was like the phone was possessed.

[00:12:03] It had kind of mutated into a little doll almost.

[00:12:06] Yeah, it grew legs and hands.

[00:12:09] Yeah, exactly.

[00:12:11] And before she throws it away, right?

[00:12:15] It was one of the funny little gags I thought she goes to hit her hand on whatever something in the shed there and she just ends up hurting herself.

[00:12:25] Oh, the drill press, yeah.

[00:12:27] I just thought it was a fun little gag.

[00:12:29] And it still sounded like a dead-eyed mom but it was in the cell phone because it was about her mom calling her.

[00:12:35] That's right.

[00:12:37] Yeah, good stuff.

[00:12:39] All right, Rich.

[00:12:40] That was my number three too but Chris said it could be number one for all I care.

[00:12:48] It was part nostalgia, part comic relief but it was all fun.

[00:12:54] It was awesome.

[00:12:55] I got a kick at a brandy's mom talking shit as the possessed phone that made me laugh.

[00:12:59] And then when her thumb got bitten off I totally perked up and I was like, oh no!

[00:13:05] She's gonna have to cut her hand off just like her dad.

[00:13:08] And then she was about to but it was just a daydream and I was like, no!

[00:13:11] I actually wanted that to happen.

[00:13:13] I wanted to see her get like a stand next to dad with her left hand missing and some sort of gadget on her left hand there.

[00:13:19] Yeah, I wonder why they didn't just have her do it.

[00:13:22] I was thinking maybe they wanted to give us that old school experience but then just maybe not repeat themselves.

[00:13:29] That's kind of what I thought and I even in that scene thought to myself, oh they're doing this again but then nope they didn't.

[00:13:36] And I sort of appreciated that it was a little bit of a fallback reference, a nod to it without actually doing it.

[00:13:44] Javens has some classic lines from the movie too.

[00:13:48] Like what did she say? She said, oh Chris said yeah, who's laughing now?

[00:13:51] And then she also said come get some.

[00:13:54] That was cool.

[00:13:56] I wonder if the showrunners though aren't hinting something here.

[00:13:58] Well I guess not if it got canceled huh but I was thinking maybe they were a grooming brandy to take over for Ash.

[00:14:05] I think you might be totally right.

[00:14:08] Obviously this was all written and stuff before the show was canceled so it occurred to me too.

[00:14:15] If the show continued and Bruce Campbell wasn't a part of it or Ash dies or something, here's Brandy to step into the role and I think she would have been great.

[00:14:24] Yeah because I'm glad they didn't try to make her a total Ash clone where she's a doofus and a buffoon you know but she still does have some of his characteristics which is great so I think that would have actually been really interesting to watch.

[00:14:41] Yeah.

[00:14:42] Couple of side notes. You were talking about sound earlier Jason. I have a pretty gnarly surround sound system and this scene where the phone is running around the room and you got all the squeaky noises and all the clangs and the clacks.

[00:14:55] It's all recorded in surround sound so you can hear it going around your room if you've got it. It's pretty cool.

[00:15:01] That's so cool.

[00:15:04] I mean this goes right into my number three which is the nods to the past that I feel like there were a lot of nods to previous aspects of the series and to me that made the episode feel kind of significant like it feels like they're wrapping things up here you know.

[00:15:20] That's what they do in movies or in TV shows when it's coming close to the end and I know they've talked about how they tried to treat this as if it could be the end just in case it was.

[00:15:29] But things like when Ash is just upset and he's all about people who've died. Christ first Linda then Cheryl chat pop then Pablo I'm not dead you were.

[00:15:45] Brandy then yeah yeah my daughter to come on enough is enough.

[00:15:51] I'm gonna find a Ruby and put a stop to this one soon for all they all say which is another I mean that's kind of a nod to their teasing him because he always says once and for all.

[00:16:01] Which I didn't even realize until they did that and I'm like yeah you just say that a lot.

[00:16:06] What else like dear heads over fireplaces that's another one that comes up a lot the whole thing with Brandy she's got the boomstick and you know you guys have already talked out that scene but that all felt like a really awesome throwback.

[00:16:25] And even down to yeah the mom saying.

[00:16:29] On the phone messages Brandy it's mom I don't know what's happening I know you're scared honey but I just wanted to tell you I just wanted you to know that you taste good.

[00:16:43] Because she ate his thumb or her thumb that's funny classic that I'm a little bit there.

[00:16:49] I'm gonna do the rest of the pot like this Richard.

[00:16:53] No I got her I don't know.

[00:16:57] You know what they did to they also wrecked the car I was sad about that.

[00:17:01] Did they wreck it I mean yeah that that was another one that I was going to say is a throwback and it seemed like it could have been wrecked.

[00:17:08] Yeah and his and his chainsaw right.

[00:17:12] The car is a is an interesting point I hadn't thought of that I made a note here of what was the point of ash crashing into the bar but I think the point was wrecking the car.

[00:17:22] They're taking all these things away from yeah.

[00:17:27] Yeah interesting and then he mentioned that this is a smaller one those were two big ones I was gonna mention but the smaller one is he just mentioned last time you had a deal with Ruby he didn't get jack shit out of it so that's just to call back to.

[00:17:41] His own fault when he asked for $10,000 and she said she would give him gas money and he's like okay.

[00:17:50] See that one reminded me of what it was an army of darkness right when he said you're the only thing your king of is jack and shit and Jack left town.

[00:17:58] Oh there you go.

[00:18:00] Right and there's a there's a few others to he called Ruby sugar lips which kind of reminded me of give me some sugar baby.

[00:18:08] Brandy rich you already said she used to come get some line and then ash said take the government your ears again so that's all kinds of like verbal callbacks even.

[00:18:17] Lines and stuff like that and here's one that I liked Pablo just out of the blue kind of said the time has come to test the medal of man which is the title of the finale medal of man but it's also what trailer park dead I'd Vivian.

[00:18:34] It said to ash in the first episode when she turned it and we're here and it's time to test the medal of man and so that was a really nice just full circle kind of thing like this is what this is all led to whatever's going to happen next episode is what started back then when.

[00:18:51] Stupid ash read from the book because he was trying to impress this girl in his trailer.

[00:18:56] I didn't make that connection with an idiot no I didn't either that is a really good one they go all the way back to the beginning.

[00:19:03] But here's and then the last thing is I this should have occurred to me last week but I've always loved when the dead I'd say well swallow your soul swallow your soul but I never really understood what it meant but I think maybe I do now that.

[00:19:15] Now that we know that when the evil kills you your soul goes into this rift dimension and then it may get dragged down into hell so maybe that's what they mean by swallow your soul.

[00:19:26] Look at that I think you might be on to something nice and tidy.

[00:19:31] All right number two my number two.

[00:19:34] I'll kind of combine a couple into one here I enjoyed the cold open quite a bit it was super gory and watching them peel that flap of skin off of Zoe's back was just another time on this show where I had to kind of squint a little bit and look away because.

[00:19:51] I don't enjoy watching anyone get flayed necessarily.

[00:19:55] Oh God I don't it really was it was hard to watch getting her eyes poked out equally hard to watch.

[00:20:04] But the other thing that happened I think this before the credits I don't know it doesn't matter but it was near the beginning is when when Pablo was seeing through the books eyes which I thought was kind of an interesting little turn here that he could do this.

[00:20:23] I thought it was a bit strange at first that they suddenly introduced this ability but I do think it was well used because it's sort of the book was showing Pablo where Kelly's body was and it revealed to them like how to save her in a way you know because they realize that.

[00:20:43] That her body was occupied and they needed to go and get her body back so she can come out of the out of the rift.

[00:20:51] So I thought it was used kind of a neat way to do that and then later in the episode when Ash tries to use the book sort of like a like a walkie talkie to communicate with Pablo.

[00:21:02] That was just funny and.

[00:21:04] Can you can you hear me come in over.

[00:21:09] That's right that's that's just Ash being Ash doing something ridiculous but also kind of clever I thought because he needed to talk to him.

[00:21:18] Yeah and that's also sort of a call back because I just think it was really significant the whole thing that happened with Pablo at the end of season one when he got melded with the book it's never left him and now I feel like it's that in combination with him getting these

[00:21:33] brujo powers that's allowing him to do this sort of telepathy or whatever you want to call it.

[00:21:38] Yeah it's just fun though I think I think seeing through the eyes of the book is it's something that never occurred to me that they would ever ever that would ever come up and here we are you know.

[00:21:47] It was a good device if sometimes you forget that what we know the characters don't know you have to fill them in somehow.

[00:21:55] Yeah exactly I laughed out loud at that part when Ash did that come in over I just burst out laughing.

[00:22:04] Yeah he's like a giant eighth grader.

[00:22:08] He really is that was the funniest bit of the episode for me in an episode that otherwise I didn't think was all that.

[00:22:15] No not too much couple of laughter lots to when he was driving his car to get Kelly's body he was psyching himself out in the car with beer and chips.

[00:22:25] I was like yeah we share so many parallels that guy.

[00:22:29] Well when he he was telling Brandy here's the boomstick now you be careful it's got a it's got a kick like a mule he just comes off when he's talking to her now more like no hint of any goofiness just a hero a father you know all this and he brings her in for the hug and then she throws up on him and he goes oh no that's okay but he's grimace.

[00:22:54] The whole time.

[00:22:56] Yeah but the first thing he does is he puts his hand in it and touches it I'm like what are you doing if someone pukes on me I'm like oh don't let it anymore get on me.

[00:23:06] Yeah.

[00:23:08] Rich number two.

[00:23:10] Oh number two I put the dark ones so I kind of like I kind of I don't know how to explain it but you know they're they're here they're like super powerful.

[00:23:22] They're scary and you know they had an agenda man they only had one thing on their mind to get that book it seems they should have taken out ash pretty easily after what they did to to kaya and Ruby.

[00:23:36] I mean ash has been fighting Ruby for three seasons and it's had a hard time of it in the dark ones made it look easy getting rid of Ruby and kaya.

[00:23:43] Yeah so I was like dang man that you know the shit got real real quick.

[00:23:48] Yeah it was interesting that when Ruby is yelling at them she's like go ahead take me soon you will suffer the same fate the savior of humanity will destroy you all and I think she's talking about ash so that was like a twist there where all of a sudden she's like.

[00:24:05] Just warning them about ash.

[00:24:08] Yeah it was just really interesting to me.

[00:24:10] They knew he was in the room when he took the book they said oh the you know the chosen one has taken the book.

[00:24:16] Yeah well yeah I mean I fucking love the dark ones that first of all they look like the animated versions of them did way back in season one episode two and they went to that occult bookstore and the guy was telling them about the dark telling us all about it but you know they're now fully realized and they're just.

[00:24:35] Other worldly voices and they're like demon shadows with their red robes blowing in the wind but and they just seem so powerful but yeah like Ruby supposed to be a dark one and she's the one who trapped them all and so she's one of their kind but then that makes me feel like.

[00:24:53] She should have like a true form or something because she just seems a lot weaker than them here you know and is that because she spent a lot of time in our world or because they've gotten stronger by being in the.

[00:25:05] The other world or is it just something we should not worry about I'm not sure but the second time I watched it you know they they took Kyah's soul out of Kelly's body put it in her original body and then killed her.

[00:25:19] But when they took Ruby they just sucked her soul into one of the dark ones and so I mean I don't think they killed her I think maybe she's gone back into the even.

[00:25:30] Whatever you call it yeah.

[00:25:32] I was wondering that too like is that it for Ruby because it felt a little anticlimactic she just they just sort of they showed up killed her and that's it and I'll be surprised if she doesn't play a part in the final episode next week.

[00:25:46] I don't know there's a part of me that kind of hopes it is for some reason I do wonder if the series had gone on was was it Lucy Lawless's plan to end now you're probably right she'll probably be back but.

[00:25:59] I don't know Ruby as a villain I love Lucy Lawless but it just seems to because she just looks like this woman it feels less threatening than if it was some other more grotesque that I like evil you know.

[00:26:16] Yeah and you can't and if the show was going on you can't have the same villain over and over and over again yeah for yeah that's how I mean I guess you can.

[00:26:24] Okay and some in some ways but I don't know if it would work forever here.

[00:26:30] But but I think you make a good point rich that they killed Kyah they burned her up but they just sort of sucked Ruby in so she might still be around you're right yeah.

[00:26:42] Yeah so my number two is the grote anus and you already mentioned like just watching them carve a rectangle out of Zoe's back is an impede it off is pretty gross and even brandy getting her thumb.

[00:26:56] Bit enough it reminded me a little bit more of the 2013 Evil Dead reboot where a lot of this just destruction of body parts happened.

[00:27:06] I mean it's great don't get me wrong but it's like oh there was one part Zoe is trying to get away the night to Sumeria girl and she grabs door handle and it comes off and then some tendrils came in I could you tell if that was her veins or was it coming out of the door knob or.

[00:27:24] I don't know what that was either I made a note about it I was gonna ask what was that sneaky thing no I'm not clear either it was it was a quick thing and then it was gone so.

[00:27:33] Maybe she was hallucinating because she lost a lot of blood.

[00:27:37] I don't know and then later we have Frank at the bar tearing his own like cheek off and I always think that's effective in a horror movie when you know someone is doing something really nasty but they're facing the other way so you can't tell and you're like not sure you really want him to turn around like they're eating a baby or something you know.

[00:27:58] What's he doing?

[00:28:00] And then just the last thing is this isn't that gross but it fit in here so Ash runs over to dead ice bam hits him on the way back into town and he goes those were dead ice and I'm like how do you know.

[00:28:13] Yeah.

[00:28:15] Sacks of exploding blood for all year maybe it was the color of the fluid coming out of their bodies did you notice he had a beer in his left hand when he was driving and hitting those.

[00:28:24] He always does.

[00:28:25] He does he had at least two or three beers in the car in this episode.

[00:28:29] It's a good thing the show wasn't more popular it would glorify drunken driving.

[00:28:34] Oh it would probably be more controversial against like or with some certain groups.

[00:28:41] Groups yeah.

[00:28:43] Luckily they don't know it exists.

[00:28:45] That's right that's right.

[00:28:46] That part where they carved up Zoe was it really was hard to watch but you know honestly it was kind of morbidly cool to see how Ruby makes pages for the Necronomicon.

[00:28:57] It was like a real life it was like a life hack literally.

[00:29:02] Need some paper cut off a section in your back.

[00:29:05] Yeah.

[00:29:07] You know it's not the carving that really got to me it's the peeling of the skin it gets to me that's what I find the grossest.

[00:29:12] Yeah and then she's moving around and falling on it.

[00:29:16] Ouch.

[00:29:18] Slipping and sliding and pools of blood as she's at the door so gross.

[00:29:23] Poor thing yeah those Knights of Samaria they kind of got the short end of the stick in this whole deal.

[00:29:30] They did they took it hard.

[00:29:34] Yeah they did.

[00:29:36] Chris number one.

[00:29:37] Okay my number one I think this is massive actually and it's it's it starts with Ruby destroying the chainsaw because this is huge right a hero.

[00:29:50] In my opinion almost never ever loses their signature weapon or item because the hero is defined by this thing you know you can you can cite examples all through the history of film and TV of of like the one thing that kind of defines.

[00:30:07] Your hero and it's not always a weapon but with ash it's pretty much the chainsaw.

[00:30:13] And I think by taking that chainsaw away and actually destroying it in a way you're destroying ash a little bit because.

[00:30:23] It's it's just so important to him and when when Ruby is crushing it you can just see him on the floor he's totally powerless if you listen to the way he's he's like screaming and begging her not to destroy it it's like she's physically hurting him by.

[00:30:37] Bending that blade and stuff like that so yeah I think you know they.

[00:30:44] They're about in that scene and destroying that chainsaw I think Ruby and Kelly were about to kill ash and the only thing that saved him was the dark ones showing up and they got distracted by them so yeah it's I just think it's such a huge huge deal that they actually physically destroyed the chainsaw.

[00:31:03] And when I was thinking about it I thought okay well this is ash you know he's a bit of a special case because he's the rare hero that has two signature weapons.

[00:31:14] He still has the boomstick but you know what he doesn't have the boomstick because Brandy left it on the ground outside the stupid garage so we've got ash with no chainsaw with no boomstick and about to face this giant monster the likes of the.

[00:31:33] Which he's never faced before so.

[00:31:36] I don't know man it makes me worried for ash and I think by stripping him of all these things they might be setting us up for something that we may not be ready for.

[00:31:48] Yeah well you know after the first time I watched it I was laughing actually at ash because he's like no crying you know and then she's like bending the blade all sexy and everything.

[00:32:00] The second time I watched it yeah that I picked up on the same thing you're talking about I was like no no no.

[00:32:08] But then you know at the end they show the giant whatever coming out of the hole so it's like honestly what good is a chainsaw gonna do against that.

[00:32:17] But that's the beauty of it right he has a chainsaw and he can use it like nobody else and just when you think there's nothing he can do he finds a way.

[00:32:27] But he doesn't have it now you know and it's actually destroyed you know even when heroes lose their weapons they always find their way back to them somehow right but it's gone he'd have to replace it and I don't think you can.

[00:32:42] Yeah and you will never know now yeah I see your point.

[00:32:45] I mean that's the point of this that's why it's so effective because.

[00:32:52] Right it's his thing.

[00:32:53] It's his thing.

[00:32:55] I like it I mean I think it's cool he can get another one but it's still important.

[00:33:02] Yeah I think it's really important and if they're I don't know what if Ash dies next week and Bruce Campbell wasn't really screwing around when he said this might be the end for ash.

[00:33:15] Right yeah.

[00:33:17] And seeing things like this kind of makes me think oh my god maybe they're going to do that.

[00:33:20] And that's freaking me out a little bit.

[00:33:23] They've taken everything away from him.

[00:33:25] I bet you a beer he's still alive by the end of it.

[00:33:28] Oh you're people are going to owe you a bunch of beers soon.

[00:33:34] Alive but where.

[00:33:36] Yeah yeah look I don't really deep down think that ash will actually die but it's stuff like this that at least has me questioning it.

[00:33:45] Which is good.

[00:33:47] Which is good.

[00:33:48] I'm really pumped to watch the final episode because I just feel like I have to know what happens now.

[00:33:55] And by the way everybody we had early access to all these episodes except we don't for the final one which sucks.

[00:34:02] So that means that we're probably going to be late next week hopefully just a couple of days but we'll have to see.

[00:34:09] Just so you know.

[00:34:11] We made the rule at the beginning that we wouldn't watch head so that we would just be reacting to one episode at a time and I stuck to the rule the whole time but now if that episode was up there I might have sneaked.

[00:34:24] I would definitely watch it as soon as we were done recording tonight.

[00:34:28] Totally 100% yeah.

[00:34:30] Now we got to wait.

[00:34:32] I did too I stuck to that rule and it works it works.

[00:34:34] The only time I watched ahead was when I wasn't on the podcast and then I watched ahead.

[00:34:42] Rich you're the only one who's been on I think you've been on every episode of Evil Dead Cast right.

[00:34:48] Oh except maybe the interviews some of the interviews.

[00:34:52] Yeah oh that's true I did do a couple of the interviews because they had to work.

[00:34:56] What is it with four o'clock in the afternoon damn.

[00:35:00] I don't know.

[00:35:01] All right what's your number one Rich.

[00:35:04] Oh my number one was the final moment could a show and any better I think not.

[00:35:11] You know the bait of Ash battling a giant whatever that thing is is absolutely exactly what I've written myself I mean it was awesome.

[00:35:22] Consider me hooked man I don't normally admit this in public but I will here and now.

[00:35:26] I think Godzilla King Kong and Pacific Rim were awesome movies.

[00:35:31] I love monster movies so for me this final episode cannot get here soon enough this soon enough I'm really looking forward to it is something different to think about it.

[00:35:41] Totally Ruby and Kaia are out see a bitches and Ash is moving on to bigger and better evil seriously.

[00:35:49] I like how you've called it the giant whatever like three times now on the podcast.

[00:35:53] Yeah well I did yeah all we know was that it has a hand.

[00:35:57] It has a hand as big as a car that's right.

[00:35:59] It would look sort of like a spidery kind of thing with big legs.

[00:36:05] I gotta watch it again.

[00:36:07] Well I gotta assume guys it's the thing on that poster for season three where it's this big massive jaw with giant teeth in it and Ash is kind of straddling the jaw.

[00:36:17] I think he's pointing the shotgun straight down into it but he doesn't have the shotgun so I think it's that thing but we just haven't seen it yet fully.

[00:36:25] Alright well we've covered everything pretty much in my notes and everything so I just want to ask you guys what do you have any predictions for next week?

[00:36:39] I think Ruby will make an appearance but I think it's just going to be a curtain call so to speak.

[00:36:47] Okay.

[00:36:49] Right now what's interesting to me is Ash and Pablo they their only goal was to go and save Kelly they really had no thought or any goal to defeat the dark ones and it doesn't seem like they would have any hope of doing that.

[00:37:08] I'm sure I'm pretty sure they will but it didn't seem like they had any hope and I was also thinking through all the struggle of this whole series right now their worst nightmares are being realized.

[00:37:21] The creators of the book of the dead have come through up until now we've just had this sort of tool and that's caused enough trouble but now we actually have the creators of the tool and they're the ones who created it in order to take over the world and now they're here and they've reassembled it and everything.

[00:37:38] Man they're really screwed the only thing I can say for them especially Pablo and Kelly is throughout the course of the series they have developed strength and abilities that will help them in this fight and even Ash has probably gotten a little stronger and a little more able.

[00:37:55] Yeah but that's what makes it so good they've got the prophesied one.

[00:37:59] If anybody can't figure out is what Brandy's final role is going to be. Is she going to save Ash? Is she going to stand triumphant with Ash next to her father? I don't know what happened with Brandy.

[00:38:14] Yeah that's a really good question. If I had to make a prediction it's a pretty safe one is that they're going to save Kelly and I think Kelly and Pablo will I feel like they're 100% going to survive.

[00:38:32] Brandy too I'm a little less sure about Ash just because of everything I was talking about before but really I think everyone's going to live through and we'll probably get a pretty satisfying conclusion with the hint of maybe everything's not quite wrapped up as well as they might think.

[00:38:58] Yeah like there might still be some evil in the world huh. There's always going to be evil in the world Rich so.

[00:39:04] I mean based on what Bruce was talking about in that panel I feel like it's going to feel wrapped up and then it's all about fighting robots in the future or something crazy you know it's completely different.

[00:39:19] You know what that would be great if we flash forward or something and there's robots or aliens or whatever.

[00:39:28] They kind of already figured out Pablo huh because he was even questioning it himself it's like why didn't they kill me?

[00:39:35] Yeah he was saying they you know one foot in both worlds they think I'm one of them and I'm like well what about that deadite in the seller or you know in the hardware store that didn't seem to affect her but this episode for some reason the dark ones ignore him.

[00:39:54] Well I think there's a difference between deadites and the dark ones right the deadites are just the troops that go and attack whatever the dark ones they know really what's going on.

[00:40:06] They're detached they don't know what's going on.

[00:40:10] To me it reminded me of the Nazgul you know the dark riders little bit right right right.

[00:40:19] One last thing you know what I was thinking about it and I think if you wanted to take over the world putting evil into people's cell phones would work like a charm.

[00:40:32] Well there's a Stephen King book about that called Cell where everyone one day everyone's cell phone rings and whoever answers it they just go fucking nuts and turn into these rabid killers.

[00:40:45] Whoa that's pretty cool yeah.

[00:40:49] Wasn't the first Kingsman movie a little bit about that too did you guys see that?

[00:40:54] I never did get around to watching that.

[00:40:56] Oh my god it's great but there's sort of that theme is in there too.

[00:41:00] You didn't see that rich I thought you would have seen that.

[00:41:03] Yeah I wouldn't watch that.

[00:41:05] Actually I haven't I just haven't watched it yet.

[00:41:07] Alright good.

[00:41:09] Yeah I'm good.

[00:41:10] Alright cool we'll take a little break there is more to come so stay with us.

[00:41:14] Alright well everybody we have already talked about the biggest news about Evil Dead this week of course that is that stars are on the show.

[00:41:23] See you later.

[00:41:26] Kiss me through the phone.

[00:41:28] Kiss me through the phone.

[00:41:29] See you when I get home.

[00:41:31] I get home.

[00:41:35] Groovy.

[00:41:39] Alright well everybody we have already talked about the biggest news about Evil Dead this week of course that is that stars has officially cancelled the show which is a huge bummer.

[00:41:50] Boo.

[00:41:52] Yeah boo stars.

[00:41:53] Suck it stars.

[00:41:57] Also thank you stars for putting this show on because it was fucking awesome.

[00:42:02] Totally and you know what guys the silver lining is we got three seasons of an amazing show that we got to sit here and talk about and celebrate so it was that's pretty good.

[00:42:14] But stars didn't offer an official reason for the cancellation.

[00:42:18] In fact they barely made a statement about it but head of programming Karmie's lot Nick did say we are proud to send the show out with a bang and a splat.

[00:42:30] So that's you know that's okay I guess.

[00:42:33] But Bruce Campbell you know put out a brief statement he said Ash versus Evil Dead has been the ride of a lifetime.

[00:42:42] Ash Williams was the role of a lifetime it was an honor to reunite with Evil Dead partners Rob Tappert and Sam Raimi to give our tireless fans another taste the outrageous horror comedy they demanded.

[00:42:53] I will always be grateful to stars for the opportunity to revisit the franchise that launched our careers.

[00:42:59] So that's pretty nice.

[00:43:00] Nice very nice.

[00:43:01] Sounds like he's sad.

[00:43:03] It does a little bit and I'm sure he is a little sad you know this is an end of an era for yet nobody more than him.

[00:43:10] Yeah and when you know when I did that little interview with him and he was saying you know maybe this kind of niche adult horror is just not big enough or I forgot exactly what he said but I think he's probably my sense is he's like oh yeah there's a lot of Evil Dead fans they've been just asking for this is going to be huge.

[00:43:31] And then it wasn't huge and he was like oh man maybe I was just wrong about this whole thing you know yeah not as big as I thought it was and I don't know you know maybe that's true who knows what if this had been on ABC would it have gotten this huge following or not ABC because they wouldn't air it but AMC.

[00:43:51] I don't know.

[00:43:52] Yeah I want to know why the viewership has gone down.

[00:43:55] That's what pisses me off.

[00:43:56] Right it's gotten better but the viewership has gone down.

[00:43:59] Yeah.

[00:44:00] Yeah it's a curious thing really I mean we all know stars is kind of notoriously difficult to get right but there are ways if you really want to I suppose but you're right you'd think that it would at least hold steady because the fans that are watching it are really the fans that want to see how it goes right.

[00:44:19] It's strange to think that people watch it a little bit and then just drop off and disappear.

[00:44:24] We can always blame Netflix.

[00:44:26] Yeah.

[00:44:27] Yeah.

[00:44:28] Must be Netflix for everything.

[00:44:29] Must be Netflix's fault somehow.

[00:44:30] Bastards.

[00:44:31] But I hope Ashford's Evil Dead shows up continues on Netflix.

[00:44:35] That'd be cool.

[00:44:36] Yeah totally that way we can watch it anytime we want.

[00:44:39] In slightly more exciting news the apparently Evil Dead is going to have a theatrical re-release on October 26th this year.

[00:44:48] There's not a lot of information out there about this but digitalspy.com is reporting that it will be re-released in theaters with really no more information other than that and the only thing I can think of is that this year is the 35th anniversary of the original movies release

[00:45:06] and the 25th anniversary of Army of Darkness so maybe they're planning some sort of theatrical celebration for that.

[00:45:14] Did they say which movies?

[00:45:16] Just the original one I believe.

[00:45:19] Dude Rich let's go watch it.

[00:45:20] I never saw that in the theater.

[00:45:22] Yeah me either.

[00:45:23] Let's watch it together.

[00:45:25] I'll be there for sure yeah if it's playing somewhere near me I hope that'll be really really fun.

[00:45:30] But really that's it so I don't know how solid this is but keep an eye open for it as we get through the summer and into the fall hopefully more information will come out.

[00:45:41] Cool.

[00:45:42] Okay Bruce Campbell did an interview and he gave some advice on how to become a B-movie icon for anybody out there.

[00:45:53] With Ash going away maybe we're going to need some new B-movie icons in our life.

[00:45:59] He was on the IMDB show and he offered these tips.

[00:46:04] First of all learn you're going to be covered in blood.

[00:46:08] That's okay I'll give away the secret here.

[00:46:12] Each one spells out the word legend so for L it's learn you're going to be covered in blood.

[00:46:18] E you're going to want to eat everything on the craft services table because low budget movies are really cheap and the lunches usually blow.

[00:46:27] G as in get ready to scream I recommend using the diaphragm.

[00:46:34] E what do you think evil oh I gave it away.

[00:46:38] E for evil you have to learn how to deal with it you have to cut its head off you have to dismember it and we have to say the special words.

[00:46:47] And never lose your cool as a hero which I've played often you can't ever lose your cool because then you wouldn't be a hero would you.

[00:46:56] He loses his cool sometimes.

[00:46:59] Yeah sometimes and finally D final word is D as in don't forget to watch Ash vs Evil Dead on stars Sundays at 9.

[00:47:10] I thought it was going to be be a douchebag.

[00:47:12] Yeah something like that.

[00:47:15] Keep your dick in your pants I don't know.

[00:47:20] So there you go that's how to be a legend according to Bruce Campbell.

[00:47:25] You do that go for it.

[00:47:28] All right Dana De Lorenzo has won an award everybody that's very exciting.

[00:47:33] The was it from you.

[00:47:35] Well she wins the award of my heart every week but she won the the Artemis Women in Action Film Festival has stowed Dana with the Artemis Action Next Wave Award.

[00:47:50] And apparently that's very very cool so Dana said on Twitter out of all the blood soaked badass groovy moments I've been lucky enough to experience thanks to Ash vs Evil Dead being honored with a woman or a women in action.

[00:48:04] Award by Artemis Picks is definitely at the top so this is a this is actually a film festival that runs in Los Angeles that celebrates women in like action movies and roles and very powerful roles and so on.

[00:48:20] So they've acknowledged Dana as Kelly which is pretty cool.

[00:48:25] Yeah if you're interested the film festival is in LA from April 26th to the 29th so that's coming up pretty soon.

[00:48:32] Congrats.

[00:48:34] And then finally this is this is a bit of a stretch for Evil Dead news I would say but the director of the 2013 remake Fide Alvarez is going to be the director of the next chapter in the

[00:48:50] Dragon Tattoo movies it's called The Girl in the Spider's Web.

[00:48:54] And I just bring that up because I think he did a great job with the Evil Dead remake which starred a very strong female main character and that kind of reminded me of Lisbeth Salander in these movies and now he's directing this one so maybe it'll be really great.

[00:49:11] And if you're a fan of his I'd say keep your eyes open for that.

[00:49:14] I never saw those movies should I watch The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

[00:49:19] Yeah I quite liked all three of them to be honest with you the original Swedish ones.

[00:49:24] I enjoyed the American remake too but something about it didn't quite hit me as much but the books were good and the movies were good so I recommend them.

[00:49:34] Cool no I like that I think that movie that 2013 movie had a lot going for it and so yeah I'd like to find out what he's doing next so that's cool.

[00:49:43] Yeah absolutely.

[00:49:45] All right that's it for the news.

[00:49:46] All right let's get into some listener feedback Rich you want to go first.

[00:49:50] All right Steve Brown.

[00:49:52] This is about last week's episode as always where what happened Ash went into the rift and Pablo fought the dead in the hardware store.

[00:50:01] Yeah rifting apart right.

[00:50:03] Steve Brown writes and I liked it.

[00:50:05] I think Pablo can only open the rift where that writing on the walls or with the book maybe.

[00:50:14] I tried not to pick apart the continuity loved the delta it does seem strange that Ash took the wrong body out of the truck.

[00:50:23] Right you know I forgot me at all.

[00:50:25] No but I forgot to talk about that last week and it is they really kind of f that up because it's clear which side her body is on and then he takes that body but then it's the wrong one.

[00:50:39] I noticed that too and you could maybe chalk it up to Dead Eye Trickery but I don't know.

[00:50:48] Dead Eye Trickery.

[00:50:50] Maybe he had too many beers.

[00:50:52] Yeah I say Dead Eye Trickery.

[00:50:55] Thomas Chapman writes as soon as they passed the work counter I saw the paint mixer and I thought he needs to put her head in that.

[00:51:04] And then when he did exclaimed a very loud fuck yeah I love this show.

[00:51:09] That's awesome.

[00:51:11] That's hilarious.

[00:51:13] It's a little violent certain kind of guy Thomas to think like that.

[00:51:18] Love it.

[00:51:19] Love it.

[00:51:21] Paul Williams says I really enjoy the episode have to say I wasn't loving this season up until the halfway point but the last couple have gotten me interested again.

[00:51:29] The rift definitely feels a little stranger things inspired but it definitely fits within the established universe so I'm okay with it.

[00:51:35] Well I'm glad that Paul is on board finally but it's too bad it took half the season for that to happen.

[00:51:41] Yeah and then right when it's over.

[00:51:42] John Bucket writes three two two and a half.

[00:51:48] I'm still chuckling a week later this show is just superb it's a huge shame and sadly no surprise that it's been canceled.

[00:51:55] Oh you knew but I'm so glad this show existed at all it's shown me things I'd never even imagined in the groovy as possible way here's to it all ending with a bang followed by a splatter.

[00:52:10] Yeah look at that.

[00:52:12] We have an email here Megan from Nashville and Megan writes my name is Megan first time writing in but long time listener from episode one actually I'm a huge fan of the show but I wanted to write in about how sad I am about the ratings drops of late.

[00:52:29] I know it's possible this might be the last season and as long as they end it well I think I'll be okay but I'm really kind of sad that they only go by the live views.

[00:52:41] I don't actually have a stars the stars channel through my cable network I have a subscription through Amazon even though it shows up the day of I typically don't get to watch it until the next day.

[00:52:51] I wish they took that into consideration because I'm sure a lot of viewers do the same.

[00:52:56] I really hope they move to a streaming service or something.

[00:52:59] Honestly I don't watch anything live anymore so I don't think any show should make as big a deal about views like that but I know it's all about the commercials and such thus why we get 40 minutes of walking dead and 20 minutes of commercials on AMC.

[00:53:14] I stopped watching it live because of that.

[00:53:16] Also I know you guys have mentioned it before but I really think binging has spoiled us.

[00:53:23] Most people don't like watching things week to week anymore so they'll wait and accumulate a couple of episodes and knock them out that way.

[00:53:30] Anyways just some thoughts for you if we lose the show that means we lose the podcast too and that makes me ever so ever more sad but you guys cover all my favorites so I know you're not going anywhere.

[00:53:41] I agree with you on all points Megan.

[00:53:47] You know I'm sure that they do factor in all those different things because there are ratings for live and then live plus three and plus seven which is plus three days and plus seven days and streaming services and I know stars does have a streaming service doesn't it or do they not?

[00:54:04] Yeah they do yeah in fact the episode comes out I think Sunday morning on their app.

[00:54:11] Oh okay yeah so you know there are ways to get it and I'm sure they're factoring all those things in but as a trend when you're looking at the live ratings they certainly are going down.

[00:54:24] Yeah I know I mean I'm sure that they factor in any way that when people watch it it brings them money whether that's well it's all pay services so whether it's streaming or what but it just wasn't enough with all that.

[00:54:45] Yeah they'd have to see an uptick in the subscriptions huh?

[00:54:49] Yeah.

[00:54:50] They don't do advertisements.

[00:54:51] I mean even yeah because they sold it over to Netflix and I don't know if they get more money if it gets more watches on Netflix I kind of think maybe not but the way Bruce was talking is they just they wouldn't want to hand it over to Netflix they need it to be successful on their own platform for it to keep going.

[00:55:09] Do you guys think that there's any chance that now that it's officially cancelled like someone else could pick it up and continue it?

[00:55:19] Like I think Netflix has done that before haven't they?

[00:55:22] They've taken a show that maybe wasn't successful somewhere and did another season of it.

[00:55:28] Yeah they have black mirrors.

[00:55:30] It is possible.

[00:55:31] Oh yeah of course.

[00:55:32] Black mirror.

[00:55:33] But I think that the rights probably are that stars probably has the legal rights.

[00:55:42] I don't know that for sure but I have a feeling that's true so that they would have to be in agreement for that to happen.

[00:55:48] I wonder I mean this kind of thing you would think you would think that Sam Raimi owns at least a good portion of it Bruce Campbell himself I don't know.

[00:55:56] The only reason I think that is because Bruce was saying well stars wouldn't it would be an ego thing for them to like give it over to somebody else so they wouldn't want to do that so that made me think that they had some control over it.

[00:56:08] Right maybe they gained some control when they agreed to do the show or something yeah.

[00:56:13] Or we'd have to wait 20 years and then have them reboot it.

[00:56:17] When Bruce Campbell's 80.

[00:56:20] Oh my god.

[00:56:22] Like they're doing with all these other shows.

[00:56:23] Hey if anybody can still kick ass when he's 80.

[00:56:26] Bruce Campbell.

[00:56:27] I'm gonna get you evil bastards.

[00:56:32] Alright now it's time for next week on Ash vs Evil Dead.

[00:56:36] Next episode the Medal of Man.

[00:56:40] Elk Grove undergoes a major battle that takes place on the streets.

[00:56:44] Ash rides high in a military tank speeding across shaky post apocalyptic Elk Grove.

[00:56:50] Ash fights the biggest battle of them all a 60 foot tall Candarian demon.

[00:56:56] This sounds way too spoilery.

[00:56:58] I don't want to know all this.

[00:57:00] I know what's apocalyptic.

[00:57:02] It sounds awesome though.

[00:57:04] Well it does sound awesome yes but I don't think I needed to know that he's driving a tank across post apocalyptic Elk Grove.

[00:57:10] Right and then some time passed post apocalyptic Elk Grove.

[00:57:13] What if it was like Ash pilots Voltron with Pablo as the right leg and Kelly as the left.

[00:57:22] And gets help from King Kong.

[00:57:25] Before Optimus Prime shows up.

[00:57:38] Alright that's our show episode 35 thank you so much for listening everybody.

[00:57:42] I just want to mention that I haven't seen it yet but I'm seriously thinking about checking out Stan Against Evil.

[00:57:50] It's getting some good reviews.

[00:57:53] It's written by Dana Gold.

[00:57:55] He's a stand up comedian.

[00:57:57] He's written for the Simpsons and he said he likes to write the Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials the best.

[00:58:02] And they renewed it for season three on IFC.

[00:58:06] And I see the ratings are just as low as Ash vs Evil Dead.

[00:58:08] They're about 175,000 per episode.

[00:58:11] I've watched a couple of episodes it is pretty good.

[00:58:16] Is it?

[00:58:18] I really like the main actor.

[00:58:20] Yeah me too.

[00:58:22] He was the guy from Scrubs the dickhead doctor.

[00:58:25] Yeah.

[00:58:27] I don't know if this is as funny to you guys but Scrubs is a brand of pickles up here.

[00:58:31] I don't know if you have them in the States.

[00:58:33] I don't think so.

[00:58:35] Have you seen this show Chris Stan Against Evil?

[00:58:37] No I've heard of it but I haven't seen any of it.

[00:58:40] I'm gonna watch it.
