[00:00:00] Hmm? Ah! Hmmm... F***ing Skid Row! I mean, she's alive, right? So that's good news. The only good news is you got a class of case of CRS. Can't remember shit. Then you'll like, she's f***ing concussed. Permanent brain damage. Don't say that.

[00:00:21] You wanna start answering questions about one-mind town? Alright, look. The road's too close. I'm not going anywhere tonight, okay? We'll get in the room. We'll keep an eye on her till morning. We? No, I can't do anything. I gotta go home.

[00:00:31] No, no, no. You're not bailing on me. Do you know what happens if I get caught outside my house? Damn it, shit. Okay? What if they call the cops? Maybe they got police crawling all over? And what if they find the spot? They can't find the spot.

[00:00:43] That's why it's the spot. But what if... Shut the f*** up. What is up, my little psychos? All you klepto hippie freaks out there? Welcome to the podcast. I'm Jade. And I'm Penny. And I'm Erica.

[00:01:12] And this is Murder Magnets, a podcast dedicated to the Peacock Original Show Poker Face. Today we're covering Poker Face Season 1 Episode 9, Escape from Shit Mountain. Woo-hoo! This episode was directed by Ryan Johnson. Ah! And written by Ryan Johnson, Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman, the showrunners themselves. OMG.

[00:01:37] OMG. I just don't even know. Okay, whoa. Before we begin, we are minus adjacent this week. He will be back for the finale though. He had... He just... He broke down. He wasn't gonna do it. He's so busy right now,

[00:01:49] but he did say he would be back for the finale. So yay! I think he had some FOMO. Right? I know. And how would you not with this show? Like, oh, I... Yeah. It was... When I had to miss an episode, I was like in physical pain, y'all.

[00:02:04] It like hurt my body to not be there. But anyway, okay. So this week we have a special guest. Welcome Erica! Oh my goodness. I don't... Applause. Oh thank you. I don't know if I'm really a worthy replacement of Jason, but I don't take it.

[00:02:24] Oh my god. Stop it. No. Okay. I love Erica. She's my new bestie. Erica just gets me. She's my people. We bond over all things, you know, old lady-ish and theater-ish. And I'm very excited. We have a very exciting announcement. She will be my co-host for Perfectly Marvelous.

[00:02:43] Our podcast coming up dedicated to Mrs. Maisel. The final. The final season. Okay? We just got an announcement. Like it was sent from heaven. It's like seriously perfect timing. We have been waiting for this announcement. Like when is it coming? When are they gonna do it?

[00:03:00] Oh my god. And just a few days ago, April 14th y'all, mark it down in your calendar because we will be coming at you with, well, some kind of a recap of all of the four seasons that came previously. We're trying to figure out

[00:03:15] what format we want to use to recap those seasons if we want to do it all in one big podcast or if we want to go, you know, season by season. I'm open to, um, to feedback on that if you listeners out there who love Mrs. Maisel,

[00:03:29] if you have ideas about how you would like us to kind of give you a recap of the first four amazing seasons of Mrs. Maisel, please let us know. Um, so anyway, welcome Erica. Thank you. Thank you. Yes. Awesome. Erica is a longtime member of the podcastica family.

[00:03:48] I am. We're excited to bring you on as a guest host in this case because, uh, it's always fun to have new people that we can torment. Thank you. I am so excited. I'm so excited. Thank you. Thank you for being here. Thanks. Thank you.

[00:04:03] Well, that's all I have to say about this. I want to say, I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. Yeah, well, I'm so excited. I'm so excited in this case because I'm a fan of Mrs. Maisel B. I appreciate it. Um, this is my second time

[00:04:18] guesting. I was so lucky to be guesting on an episode of Cobra with Jason and Rima. And now I'm with the beautiful ladies face with the death magnets. I am an Natasha Leon fan. I've been since the 90s of course, you know with American Pie and

[00:04:35] and I'm a cheerleader and just I just love her work and you know and I was so glad that when she came back a full force with Russian Dolls so as soon as I saw that there is another Natasha

[00:04:47] Leon show coming up I was I was totally in. I am very much a fan of that pretty 70s like you know like really all those throwbacks I I love Quentin Taratino asks kind of film so

[00:05:02] when Grindhouse came out I was like you know first in line to see it opening weekend so I'm loving it and just like you Jade I used to watch Colombo with my grandparents and

[00:05:12] and it's just I love it. I'm a big fan of Law and Order SVU so I'm I'm all about it. I think it's extremely smart. It's hilarious although this episode really wasn't but I did pull some

[00:05:24] things out of there but I'm just I'm all in. I love it. I love the format. I love that there is a little bit of a story kind of carrying us through but everything could be a standalone episode on

[00:05:34] its own so I love it. Right on well said oh my gosh you are just getting me really I'm so glad you're here Erica. I'm so glad we're doing this. This is thrilling okay. Oh all right let's get

[00:05:45] into our actually do we want to start with moments to die for or synopsis? I think synopsis. Yeah right I always forget how this goes okay Penny hit me with that synopsis I'm a great

[00:05:57] host aren't I? I'm so organized. All right. Trey Nelson played by one of my favorite actors Joseph Gordon Levitt is six months in to a 14 month house arrest sentence alone in his quite nice

[00:06:14] mountain cabin when the ankle monitor system goes on the fritz during a blizzard he takes the opportunity for a joy ride and hits Charlie by the side of the road where she's stranded with her car

[00:06:26] in a snow bank. He gets an old friend to help him dump Charlie in a hidden spot in the woods but surprise Charlie is not dead she manages to crawl back toward the light and ends up solving

[00:06:39] not only her own hit and run but a 10 year old missing persons case that Charlie luck almost runs out but she does survive and ends up in the hospital really banged up and with cliff in the parking

[00:06:51] lot. Talk about a cliffhanger you guys right guys I was unwell after after at several points in this episode I needed to stop I needed to take a break I needed a breather I needed to stretch

[00:07:06] and and and just like decompress because I was I was just not okay this was a dark dark dark literally dark episode so dark literally dark but also just Natasha Leon just looked so oh my god

[00:07:24] scared so petrified I was so scared for her and it was just it was there's so much violence towards women in this episode that it just it was a lot but I agree it was yeah it was a lot yeah I mean

[00:07:36] and props to like Natasha Leon because I've never seen anyone look so hot such a mess like she literally looked like a drowned half-dead rat this entire episode and I just can't she's just

[00:07:49] so sexy to me oh my god I don't oh stop it okay focusing it's the voice it's like everything it's just I have such an actor crush on her but then I also have just like a crush crush on her and

[00:08:02] seeing her with another guy with a with another lover I it's it I'm embarrassed to say that like it does something you know when you're watching someone in real life that you have a crush on

[00:08:15] and you see them happy with their significant other and you're like but why isn't it me like I had that feeling and I'm like yeah stop it this is a fictional character okay like be happy

[00:08:25] for her yeah like I'm so happy for her but I'm like but why isn't it me though like I can be your man pick me um anyway but it didn't work out with them anyway god I we're gonna get there

[00:08:37] I'm so excited about this episode it's like there's so much all right uh moments to die for and I literally die you'll never die kicking it off with you Erica oh goodness I I wrote a

[00:08:58] lot of magic I'm not magic moments but let's just think about that um right I thought about this a lot and I'm and I'm going through my notes so you might hear a little noise but I thought the moment to

[00:09:10] die for was when they both went both trey and charlie like thought like they won in the end like trey thought he got away with it and then of course he didn't and then the same with poor

[00:09:24] charlie when she thought she got away with it she's like I'm dead and then she was like she realized that cliff I know already knew she was there and I'm like god fucking damn it it was

[00:09:35] horrible but it was like it like the with trey getting caught was like yes and then with her I'm like oh come on can't you get a break I'm like she can't move but that though that was the

[00:09:47] moment I'm like okay this this episode was a lot but it just showed the the the differences of like they're acting and showing how horribly despicable um trey was and and just poor poor charlie she was

[00:10:03] just I'm like she has nine lives because I'm like how the did she get through that night but she did seriously yeah seriously I thought I had nine lives but then I don't even know

[00:10:14] how charlie is yeah literally there's a section of my notes called how is charlie still alive yes from multiple times absolutely and erica I love that you drew that connection um

[00:10:28] that you made that like a whole cohesive point the way that like they both think that they get away with something or that they're like they've done they've achieved something and then it's

[00:10:36] like nope that was very very good very astute of you thank you thank you but yeah yeah it was it was and I and I've I've listened to a couple different people kind of their take on the episode and

[00:10:50] someone said they didn't like it they didn't like that and I'm like I know I'm like no I didn't I didn't dislike this episode I actually really liked it it was a lot it was really dark it

[00:11:00] reminded me of something and I still can't put my finger on it like what genre of movies maybe it was kind of based on but that that moment alone at least kind of gave me like all right she

[00:11:11] actually I think I thought about it it reminded me of like the end of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre when that poor she's like in the end and she's like I did it I did it and then the end like you

[00:11:21] don't know she wasn't it just kind of like our poor how are we she needs a break yeah she needs she needs magic band back yeah she needs a break yeah she needs magic jade yes I can I can heal you

[00:11:35] babe yes we'll get her your number seriously yeah no I I did something that I don't usually do and I what I kind of started taking my notes and then I was like I want to know what other people think

[00:11:49] of this episode because it's so insane and so I went on reddit I looked at a couple of like you know posts of what people were saying I started to kind of click around on YouTube and

[00:11:58] like other podcasts and I quickly had to stop because I was like ew people don't like this episode there's a lot of there's way more negativity about this episode than than there has been

[00:12:10] on other ones and it's all because they're like how is Charlie still alive like like this is ridiculous and I'm like yo how yeah how does um Judith light like scale a building I mean

[00:12:21] how does anything yeah stop it like can't you enjoy I feel bad if you can't just enjoy the show for what it is it is outrageous it's over the top it is over the top and it

[00:12:31] is beautiful for that please enjoy you know but anyway we'll get into it yeah um all right penny moment to die my moment to die for was um everything about the montage of Charlie

[00:12:49] just like enjoying life for a change right she's like listening to the hot guy play a guitar and she yells to the sky I'll never leave magic mountain and you know there was a lot of laughing

[00:13:04] between them and they just she looked really relaxed and happy and I was so happy for her we don't know what went wrong with hot guy um you know we never even learned his name

[00:13:17] his name is Luke he is listed as Luke on IMDB I don't know I call him Mr. Brony Hottie like Jason Mamoa's brother isn't that whole that I'm looking up an image right now of Mr.

[00:13:28] Brony because he I think he's the guy in the lumberjack flannel you know on the toilet paper I mean not totally on the paper towel yeah yeah I like that name that Brony Hottie

[00:13:40] yeah mr. Brony is a Brony I mean he's that type he also has been he's a stunt man I looked him up and yeah okay that's it's the Brony a lot of shows I love that he's so hot um and he was an

[00:13:53] astronaut on one of my other favorite shows um for all mankind um and so I had the opportunity to think back on for all mankind a little bit and I was like oh yeah everybody needs to know how

[00:14:05] awesome that show is too yeah I need to tell everyone to watch it because it's amazing um what is the show but yeah the the hotty guy was was an astronaut there for all mankind yeah it's an

[00:14:18] alternate history where um the Soviet Union made it to the moon first and then uh I would not like this from there and it's like NASA's reaction to that and how they have to compete and

[00:14:33] should I watch this yes the Soviet Union lands a woman on the moon and that prompts US NASA to be like now we have to have women astronauts and so it becomes this like feminist

[00:14:47] story of how women are just as good at being astronauts as men um but it's also like full of action and it starts in the 60s so there's all that awesome like you know if you liked

[00:14:58] the mad men period stuff you'll love for all mankind because it has all that same like attention to detail of like the clothes and the music and the cars and all that stuff um it's really

[00:15:10] beautifully produced is that on uh apple tv yeah apple tv okay I think I remember I I think I might like to watch it that looks that sounds really good yeah y'all don't sleep on the penny

[00:15:21] recommendations okay like don't sleep on it because I have a hard and fast rule hard and fast I I've doubted it in the past and I've always been disappointed every single time if penny recommends something entertainment wise I am watching it regardless of whether or not it looks

[00:15:37] like something I would like it don't matter penny recommended it I'm watching it she knows she does well I got you to watch uh extraordinary and now she's a true believer yes right on

[00:15:48] on the show extraordinary all people in that world have like a superpower and if penny existed in that world her superpower would be well one would be how to feng shui your apartment and like

[00:15:59] tell you what furniture to buy she's really good at that and then the other one would be telling you what shows and movies to watch because and it's not it's not a one-size-fits-all so this

[00:16:08] recommendation is pretty much just for me um right now because she knows me and she's talking to me but if you want a personal recommendation you can reach out to penny yeah I love talking

[00:16:20] about obviously I love talking about tv and movies that I love and I love finding something that fits somebody else's taste yeah when you know a person and you know them and like you

[00:16:32] know what they're gonna like so yeah if you if that sounds like something you're into go for it but even if it doesn't like you might like it yeah penny and knows the good it's

[00:16:40] really well made and um if you like space at all it's really worth it I do um extraordinary is the other show that I am trying to get everyone in the world to watch right now because it's so

[00:16:52] fucking funny it's so good oh my god it's so good it's really good it's really good and what channel is that on or what streaming services that's it's on hulu and disney plus okay and in the u.s

[00:17:04] disney plus outside the u.s. okay shamelessly plugging I will be a guest on the next episode of extraordinary cast with penny and grace that's true it's true well episode seven which

[00:17:15] was a doozy so yeah yes I get a lot of my recommendations from the podcast so that's why I watched um uh dead to me and and now I have a few others I'm just I'm just finishing up servant

[00:17:29] so I'm trying to add a few more you guys watch do you guys have you ever watched I'm just follow podcastica you can't really go wrong like maybe not every show is to your taste but

[00:17:41] podcastica is is good at picking things to follow that are of quality I do agree I do have so many good shows right now I think that penny should have her own separate podcast just called like

[00:17:53] pennies picks or like whatever entertainment penny picks your entertainment yes um that would be great okay we're gonna try to stay on task a little bit more we're going all off topic and all out of

[00:18:06] format because we're like plugging things we're talking about announcements we're doing it all I I'm sorry sorry not sorry yeah I just wanted to add to um pennies uh her moment though but that

[00:18:17] like just reminded me of like those 70s montages like I was expecting to hear like an afternoon delight playing and especially like the silhouette the silhouette of them kissing it was just like

[00:18:29] oh god this is so cheesy but I was loving it it was so it was quite it was cute it was cheesy it was great I loved it and she had a lot of good lines there a lot of good lines I think

[00:18:42] I wanted I picked that as my moment to die for because that's like my like main fantasy right is that like I'll meet some hot guy in the woods and we'll like sit by a lake and he'll play guitar

[00:18:55] like that's it yep yeah that's my that was my number one fantasy for like 27 years yeah yeah I mean I think it's I think we all have that that fantasy and I definitely felt like that moment

[00:19:09] when she like looked up to the sky and she's like I'm never leaving magic mountain you know she's in her afterglow moment like they just like did it under the stars by the fire and I totally had

[00:19:20] a flashback to like a moment when I did basically that exact same thing in that exact same scenario I feel very and I felt very blessed I was like well okay I didn't I don't have a bucket list

[00:19:29] but I guess I'm gonna write it on my imaginary bucket list and quickly check it off because I didn't realize that that it looks so amazing and I'm like well okay I've done that yay me you know

[00:19:41] and then I started to feel like oh I want to go back to that time it was really nice yeah hopefully if you haven't been there yet I hope that I hope that one day you will I hope

[00:19:52] that for you all all of you listening I've spent a long time by lakes and on mountains but rarely with hot guitar player dudes yeah I was with a hottie there was no guitar but

[00:20:06] there is everything else so that's all that matters that's all you need that's all you need jade what was your moment to die for so I'm shocked that we didn't all pick like

[00:20:17] you know Jimmy getting shot and then Charlie getting stabbed and then Charlie is the dead person at the door and like there were yes I'm dying I'm dying I'm dying oh my god yes right but it was

[00:20:30] almost like oh my god I'm dying overload on this episode so I just wanted to pick the moment when like I personally though like uniquely just me died right and I feel like that's what we all

[00:20:43] kind of did like our little special moments that spoke to us which I love that we're doing this and not going the obvious route so my moment to die for when as an actor and Lisa that's for you drink

[00:20:59] that'll that'll come back around during listener feedback um now I want to talk about my favorite acting moment there were many in this episode this was a great episode for acting frickin loved it but there was a moment when David Castagnetta as Jimmy

[00:21:18] he's talking with Charlie and they bond right they have their kind of heart to heart over you know and a lot of the storyline did feel like a bit of a retread from the last episode

[00:21:29] with the Nick Nolte character feeling so guilty over feeling like he was the one who caused living with this guilt and grief over um causing someone's death and yeah so he says to Charlie this isn't

[00:21:44] a cold case mystery for me or some bullshit love the word bullshit use of the word bullshit there it never fucking goes away does it ever go away echoing the line from last week

[00:21:56] that Nick Nolte's character said um I wish I I wish I'd have protected her from whatever I I wish I could have been strong like that and then Charlie says I'm sorry I know it's

[00:22:08] been pretty messed up here but to tell you the truth uh I think that's what she says I know it's been pretty messed up here to tell you the truth I generally live in the sunshine but this year has

[00:22:18] eroded me it's been pretty dark actually it's hard to feel safe and anyway look I'm sorry and then you just go back to David Castagnetta's face and he just a huge tear just

[00:22:32] rolls out of his eyes I love this man I love I loved him on Umbrella Academy he was so good in that show and he's so different here I loved that this really showcased his range because on the other

[00:22:45] on Umbrella Academy his character it took him a while to it takes us a while to see his vulnerable side he doesn't do vulnerability you know his character doesn't on that show but here he he's so sweet and he's got this meek kind of um

[00:23:04] scared kind of unsure quality about him and and just you can see he's so beaten down by this feeling of just pain and agony over his over his grief that he caused someone's death and

[00:23:18] he just has you can tell it that he's just such a changed person and that this has just done a number on him and him and Charlie connecting in that moment Natasha Leon she doesn't she doesn't

[00:23:30] say much there's not it's not a big long scene but the vulnerability that Charlie shares there just as she says I generally live in the sunshine but this year has eroded me the way she says that

[00:23:41] it was like a knife stabbing into my gut I was like no Charlie I know it has babe it's been so hard and to think that it's been a year of this for her yeah it was eroded is such an evocative word

[00:23:56] really yeah it's like you know parts of her have been washed away that's so sad yeah she's been really feel it yeah and and the way that she the way that she takes on such responsibility

[00:24:09] everywhere she goes when she encounters death and she doesn't take it lightly she's not to think of how you must she must carry that with her from place to place you know and and it's just

[00:24:23] makes it all the more horrible the way that you were talking about Penny you know her happiness was so short-lived it's like damn it give this girl a break world she can't take any more leave

[00:24:34] my Charlie alone oh yeah it was intense man you know and I don't know if it was the filmmaker's intention but her eyes in this and every scene when she was in the cabin or that

[00:24:47] that lobby with with the low lights of the fireplace her eyes looked so dark and it just it just was like it was so haunting and it was very deep but yeah I totally agree it's

[00:24:59] really sad yeah all right well let's get into our main points for this episode I would like to start with you Erica it's me where do I even begin with this I guess all right so

[00:25:21] where should we start we start at the beginning you know come on let's get into theater majors but um I thought about that cold open and it was quite a cold open um we try and when I was watching

[00:25:36] in he was doing his you know his exercise routine his smoothie golf you know his his virtual reality with his Lamborghini and doing the Dora Dash and not tipping poor Marshall you know like that poor guy

[00:25:51] I'm like I got delivery today I over tipped him just because I was so fresh on this episode and then his fireplace in his whiskey and and I just sighted of him yeah I mean he's he's an

[00:26:02] asshole if anyone but I mean dude and can I just say too I gotta say how do you not tip when it's the same guy because you live in the middle of nowhere right there's only like one delivery

[00:26:12] guy who's local and it's how do you live with yourself knowing that knowing he's coming back it's gonna be him and you're just not gonna tip like what it's a horrible person that the guy actually

[00:26:25] delivered food and not right I mean well clearly yeah clearly the guy like has no choice I guess because he's you know there's probably like I said there's not many people around so it's like he's got to

[00:26:35] take the the delivery but I mean you monster okay like I knew I was gonna have a problem with him the second I saw oh you're you're that guy who does it he's he's captain douchebag but

[00:26:47] you know but I mean I think if anything this is like you know public service announcement please tip anybody who provides service to you it doesn't matter what it is provide if they provide your

[00:26:58] over may drivers over tip over tip people yes make enough money and when when the app did that oh oh that sound you know I think that more apps should do that because it's like that sound

[00:27:13] is um it holds meaning for us like it kind of it did something to me like it made me feel like yeah it shames you it did I feel like if your app kind of subtly shamed you in that way like that

[00:27:25] game show host of like oh yeah missed it you know when you hear the audience generally just like not boo but like close to booing you it's like it plays on your psyche a little so it might

[00:27:38] encourage more people to tip better I just feel like that should be considered I hope so Uber Eats post I would stop using an app that did that to me I'd be like fuck you

[00:27:50] app and that would be the end of the app but you you hopefully you would tip Marshall right you wouldn't be that person yeah so you'll get that reinforcement you'll get it yay

[00:28:01] every once in a while when I'm using my local grocery store delivery app it'll pop up a you know a customer satisfaction survey and it'll say like do you love star market and I'll be like no

[00:28:15] and then it's like why what did we do wrong and I'm like nobody loves their grocery store like stop asking me if I love it ask me if you you know delivered the groceries in the way I wanted

[00:28:27] yes but love like you have to love my grocery store oh my goodness that's it kills me every time it pops up about every two months and I'm like oh this again no I don't fucking love you

[00:28:39] prompt a product that customer they want that quality assurance yeah but they need they need that from you penny there they're like man we're not pleasing her enough but um the one thing I

[00:28:52] and I don't know why again because this the show has had so much humor within it I was getting also a little bit of a groundhog vibe and I was like waiting for someone to go

[00:29:02] okay campers rise and shine you know yeah don't forget your booties it's gonna be a cold one I was hoping but no no it did not it just it was like the the slow kind of like the over like you know

[00:29:14] kill of just doing the same routine every day and you know but he's a horrible person so it doesn't matter but you don't know that at first but you don't really get a use your first clue

[00:29:25] is the no tipping thing but then we you know you come to realize he's a douchebag but um he flips off his peloton instructor Joseph Gordon Levitt I was like oh but is he is it because of

[00:29:37] COVID like why is he stuck in the house yeah right I was ready to like him and then to have him play this like example of toxic masculinity and trust fund and titleism was a stroke of genius I don't

[00:29:52] know if I've ever seen uh Joseph Gordon Levitt play a douchebag before I don't think so either I thought about it and you're you're right like he's done villains but not ordinarily of like asshole

[00:30:05] yeah ordinarily like I said um David Castagnetta and Joseph Gordon Levitt their roles would be switched I guess typecasting wise you know but I really enjoyed the unconventional casting and I thought

[00:30:20] I think that both of them did a phenomenal job I just was great I wouldn't switch it yeah I definitely and and and also it's just like I mean remembering him from you know third rock

[00:30:31] from the sun like he was a a young boy and like let's see where he's come from and come to and really grown into himself to have this like range of different roles that he could possibly play

[00:30:42] but um when they when the reveal for his his um his ankle it was when that came up I was like oh okay because I felt the same way I was very confused I really wasn't sure where it was going on

[00:30:55] and then we had that little revealer like oh what did he do and then yeah you know and then got to Charlie beautiful sunny beautiful warm gorgeous magic mountain yeah right she hates pine

[00:31:07] trees she hates trees she hates those trees that reminded me of the line from the jerk you know these cans he hates these can't she hates those fucking trees yeah I have a couple of things

[00:31:21] to say about mr tre as well so I'll jump in here and penny if you do I'm sure that we all have stuff to say about tre so we can we can just kind of get it all out here now I

[00:31:34] what his parole officer what the fuck the worst parole officer like ever yes I'm like do you yeah I'm like do you want this guy to fail you're supposed to be kind of setting him up for

[00:31:47] success I think I mean I don't have a parole officer I never have um but I would assume the system will come back online like any or just like you know yeah even if you don't see the the light on

[00:31:59] your little thingy it's just a glitch and we can totally see that you're still at home and like everything's just letting you know it's working as normal like lie to the man or you don't call

[00:32:09] your guy your criminal that you're in charge of on parole to say yeah just so you know um we won't be able to monitor you and uh there's going to be absolutely no way that we are going to know

[00:32:20] where you are for the next several hours so uh same rules apply uh don't do anything stupid but just so you know you're completely unmonitored once again um unmonitored it's like what do you think

[00:32:30] you're gonna do you know until seven seven a.m. you have a deadline seven a.m. it's a very clear deadline so it's like when you have to get home did I mention seven a.m. yeah yeah I'm like I'm

[00:32:43] not blaming the parole officer I'm not but I am saying shame on you sir it's a little bit of shame on you bad parole officer ring yes yeah yeah that was that was odd that was that was a choice

[00:32:57] and I also thought it was funny the way that Trey is obviously not even like he's not liked by anyone right he has like no friends and like he has to go call Jimmy that he hasn't spoken to

[00:33:09] in so long when he's in a bind so you're not well liked and he's not even like even in his group of shitty friends he's kind of the shittiest because they all made him take the fall for this insider

[00:33:22] trading thing or whatever so yeah yeah or it was his fault all along and that was just his douchebag story right he's like yeah yeah that's true make his numbers so he turned whistleblower like

[00:33:34] he's you know victim blaming right he's like oh it's this guy couldn't handle it so he did this bad thing to me and then I had to take the fall for everybody and I don't know though I feel

[00:33:45] like the way that those people the way that he said it was like and then they all made me take the fall what the fuck I think that he didn't even realize that he I feel like that was the truth

[00:33:54] for some reason like he didn't even realize how obvious your okay like that's basically like saying everybody hates you so much without noticing he was admitting it you know I don't know

[00:34:06] I felt like that was true for some reason but yeah he's he's like the shittiest guy out of the shitty guys yeah I don't know who is cleaning his house and shoveling his driveway because the house was spotless does he have a cleaning person come in or

[00:34:25] does he get down on his hands and knees and like you know oh no I'm sure he has a cleaning person I'm sure he goes he goes through them like um like tissues like uh like the mom on Gilmore girls

[00:34:37] you know she has oh yeah I she can never keep a mate yeah yeah yeah I have a feeling right yeah Murphy Brown and her uh her yeah oh yeah that was that was a good last one past yeah

[00:34:54] yeah trey I knew I had a problem with you when you didn't tip but then when he started drink when you started drinking that coconut rum man I was like oh oh you're that you that guy you that chap

[00:35:03] yeah we're gonna have a problem it was the perfect is nasty I'm sorry okay I okay listeners I love you no matter who you are no matter what you do I love you because you're my listener hello I love

[00:35:15] you but if you drink coconut rum um there's something wrong with you I'm just saying that is the most disgusting beverage I am sorry I hate rum I feel like it was really popular when I was in high

[00:35:31] school and yeah college right with like people who had gone to the Caribbean on some family vacation and they smuggled back a bottle of coconut rum and then they would have it at our high school parties

[00:35:45] yeah and I would be like no so many so many times I feel like every time I've ever thrown up on tan lotion yeah yeah right yeah it does many hangovers and from yeah it's just so sickly sweet

[00:36:01] that flavored rum too oh I can't okay can't think about it so tre um yeah you're a monster and your drink is questionable sir and he stashes it he stashes it yeah I know it's like you got my stash

[00:36:17] and it's there and because no one else is gonna drink it right they say it I'm not the only one who thinks this they say it in the episode like how can you drink that shit how can you

[00:36:27] yeah it's gross yeah stop drinking coconut rum guys they're open your eyes to the world of delicious beverages there's so much more out there than coconut rum I want better for you you can do better

[00:36:40] and yeah another thing that I thought of with tre is how many other people girls women has he hurt because he just seems to be so oh I'm in a bind someone's doing something I don't

[00:36:55] like I'm gonna just casually kill him casually he just seems like the kind of guy who like I don't want to go there and say this but like date raps girls or like they don't give him what he wants

[00:37:06] would abandon someone like on the side of the road be like get out of my car right now and like just leave you in the middle of nowhere he's just that guy and and who would be able to go home

[00:37:14] and just have a good ass night's sleep over it yeah you know you like that bitch uh she went crazy on me right that's the yeah that is the classic I'm an abuser of women

[00:37:26] defense it's like just some girl went crazy on me and so I'm not to I'm not accountable for my actions she's like crazy it's like did she go crazy when you tried to rape her was that what made

[00:37:37] her go crazy yeah right yeah what was it tray I don't believe it came out of nowhere yeah when when he heard 40 I I like got sick to my stomach so it's so aggressive so violent

[00:37:52] and it just it was and it was his face had like no expression he wasn't angry he just reactive and just did it it was disgusting and then later he was like did you think I wanted

[00:38:04] to ruin my expensive car just to cover up for you jimmy for you and jimmy's like uh I think that was for you uh jimmy's like uh hashtag did not ask for this thanks but no thanks yeah

[00:38:19] it's like you like I had to cover your ass jimmy and I'm like mmm did you know you didn't yeah yeah it's almost like he enjoyed it oh I never thought that joseph and gordon gordon levit could

[00:38:31] scare me but he was very scary this episode seriously did feel like a uh texas chainsaw massacre you know little mini episode or something you know I feel like this episode felt like a sixth

[00:38:45] episode of a second season of a really solid like amazon prime show with like a very cohesive cast who's worked together a lot in the past and has gotten to know each other over years of being

[00:38:57] together you know I was very impressed at the chemistry that I was getting from the actors in this episode because as an actor the hardest thing I think to do is to arrive on a set having

[00:39:11] these ideas of what you want to do you've done all this work you've done all this preparation and you the trick of acting is you got to prepare a lot and then be 100% ready to just throw it all

[00:39:22] away when you meet the person you're in love with or you meet the person who's your brother your whole life and you know you've got all this backstory with them and they're taking it in a

[00:39:32] totally different direction you have to be like receiving what they're giving you and like okay we're going here now and you can just see these actors doing that in every scene no one is stealing

[00:39:42] the show no one's hog in the spotlight they're all chewing the scenery in their own ways and it was just beautiful I was very relaxed in that way of of watching these actors just

[00:39:55] doing what they do best with other great people everyone knew their job they knew their place and they all were in the same world yeah it was just I think that the writing was a little spotty in

[00:40:10] this one I think that the writers had a lot on their minds and I think that they were very focused on you know we're penultimate here we have to give them a big a lot of wow

[00:40:25] and there's a lot to set up and I think that they were maybe a little focused on that instead of um instead of linking maybe like timeline threads or making clarity but all I knew I didn't matter

[00:40:39] to me because I was comfortable safe in the knowledge that these actors knew what they who they were and they knew their backstory they knew where they had been and where they were going

[00:40:48] and what they wanted and what they liked and didn't like you know they were well prepared actors well Joseph Gordon Levitt has been in every movie that Ryan Johnson has ever made right he was in

[00:41:00] Ryan Johnson's first movie brick which is brilliant and uh he is in every other movie sometimes hidden sometimes you can't see him sometimes you can um and I guess when he came on set

[00:41:15] it was like also a lot of the crew that he knew from working on other Ryan Johnson projects because of course Ryan brings his people with him when he does other projects so

[00:41:25] for Joseph Gordon Levitt it was like oh hey everyone like he was he was at home on the set immediately because it was all these people he had worked with before which I think is

[00:41:34] really very cool. I loved that it was a four person story you know it was like a little stage play and the like you know there's a storm and these people are trapped in a building together

[00:41:49] is a sort of classic horror movie trope but this turned it on its ears it was different than a horror movie and I loved it I was so there for it. I was too. I do agree I definitely felt

[00:42:02] that this could have been just like a single setting like that's it yeah we're just going to do that. Yeah it did not feel like a one-off um standalone episode in an anthology series it just it

[00:42:16] these these they worked so well together it was like it was so uh cohesive more much much more cohesive than you would ever expect you know I think that that's a very difficult

[00:42:27] thing in anthology series and I see it sometimes when I watch Colombo it's like very obvious that these actors just got on set for this one week they're doing their part and they're going home

[00:42:38] in a few days and you can kind of like smell it coming off the screen with this though it I'm telling you it was like I was plopped into the middle of a show that has been on

[00:42:46] for over a year now you know that's what it felt like. It felt very lived in. Can you imagine how excited they must have been because they cast Stephanie Sue before any of them had seen

[00:42:58] everything everywhere all at once yeah and can you imagine how they must have felt when they were like oh my god like she just had this moment where she broke out all over Hollywood and she's Oscar

[00:43:09] nominated and everything and they're like we cast her before me like it must have been like um when uh last of us cast Murray Bartlett and then after they cast him he won the Emmy and like

[00:43:22] splashed everywhere with white lotus and they were like yep good casting for us um I was thinking about that a lot I was like man they got Stephanie Sue right before she got too big for this kind of

[00:43:33] stuff yeah is it shoe or sue I'm I looked at it I thought it was shoe I think it's shoe sorry if I'm pronouncing it I know I'm always worried about doing that um so apologies if it's

[00:43:47] if it's shoe or sue I'm not I'm gonna say shoe because that's how I looked it up and that's what I got sorry I don't know but apologies I didn't look it up so I believe you okay sweet I try I always

[00:43:59] try um yeah yeah uh okay so I don't know where we are in the points right now but if anyone has any more to say on that yeah I think it's Penny's turn too we're all over the place right now

[00:44:11] but it's just this episode we just kind of are tying up trey yeah yeah a couple of trey items so Jimmy says you know you don't know what it was like here you had your family money and you went off

[00:44:24] to stanford and I had to stay here and see her fucking face every day and then later trey is like and I went to harvard not fucking stanford and oh my god only a fucking douchebag would make

[00:44:34] that point in the middle of like a murder cover-up you asshole you make harvard so bad well I live like down the street from harvard he's not alone and making harvard look bad um oh there's a lot of

[00:44:49] entitlement going on on that campus yeah um but I thought the most interesting thing was the way he kept calling Jimmy like we're family we've been friends for years this is our problem we we need

[00:45:02] to solve this our this thing happened to us and and Jimmy like increasingly is like but we're not at us and we haven't been friends for years and like you can tell that that kind of thing has worked

[00:45:16] for trey in the past like making things his problem and us problem and you know dumping his problems on other people and it's like that kind of stuff like gets old after you've done

[00:45:28] it to someone once they know right so jimmy's like wait a minute you're doing this thing again where you're trying to get me to like help you with something you did and you're trying to make

[00:45:37] it sound like it's something I did um I've had people like that in my life and like once burned you're like mm-hmm no I'm not I'm not even gonna agree to have lunch with you like I know

[00:45:49] what kind of a person you are now yeah a toxic entitlement it's it's disgusting yeah and I thought it was interesting that a class story in this show because we've definitely had like some

[00:46:02] characters who are wealthy right like sterling and uh sterling jr had plenty of money and there were other wealthy people that charlie has encountered but this is the first time where the where it's

[00:46:15] like old money family money versus like somebody who is clearly quite close to the poverty line you know jimmy runs that shitty motel that's all he does and I thought it was interesting to sort of

[00:46:29] dig into a little bit the resentment that somebody like jimmy would feel toward someone like trey who just had things handed to him yeah exactly yeah clearly he resents jimmy having his

[00:46:42] parents money and and getting to kind of get out of there as soon as he like jimmy says he didn't even go to college he has just oh god so miserable to think of having to kind of stay

[00:46:57] against your will almost in the same town you grew up in small town that has so many bad memories and to think that like cloe wasn't even his girl it was trey's girl and like jimmy was so in love

[00:47:10] with her and oh god and trey and you know trey didn't give a shit about her like ever he was just like i'm dating this chick whatever like maybe i'll bang her and blah blah you know and jimmy's

[00:47:20] just looking at her like writing poems about her like you know and that he'll never send to her and like just kind of just longing to be with her because she he enjoyed her as he said like she

[00:47:32] had an energy he appreciates her energy i was like yeah jimmy i love you man um jimmy is a sad dude yes and i mean and well and i guess what i was kind of taken from it that he you know trey

[00:47:46] basically said that like jimmy's cocaine is what killed her or had her react so was like jimmy like kind of forced into going to to selling drugs just because of the fact that he had no money

[00:47:58] and i mean it seems like he still sells drugs on the side right because he had the blues he had the blues um but yeah jimmy did that to make trey take some responsibility for what was

[00:48:10] entirely i mean did make jimmy take some responsibility for what was clearly trey who like whatever hit or pushed cloy and it killed her and he just panicked and he talked jimmy into

[00:48:25] taking some of the blame for his shitty behavior and even named it when he said we're gonna go to the spot so yeah he brought him in no matter if he wasn't involved in

[00:48:37] oh yeah i think they found that spot in the first place i thought maybe it was like a childhood thing that they found it when they were kids this is what i'm saying explain to me the spot

[00:48:47] this was this was one of the things that i thought was a little weak in the writing because okay guys y'all listeners you cannot watch this episode once if you've only watched this episode

[00:48:56] once and you feel like it was kind of an episode watch it again you can't only watch this once you cannot you can't it is a rule that is written in the fine print of the credits it's there i'm telling

[00:49:09] you i mean i don't think it's really there but it's canon in my brain because you can't watch this once it is yeah so i had a couple of things that were confusing to me about their storyline

[00:49:21] and their backstory i felt like the actors knew i would really love to ask the actors because i know they knew i know ryan johnson knew i'm sure that norah and lila zuckerman knew too but i just

[00:49:33] don't think that anyone was there to because okay you got the top dogs writing this week writing and directing right so surprisingly to my surprise it was a weaker episode on the writing

[00:49:47] not that the dialogue was bad the dialogue was great it it's exactly how people talk it was like i was watching real people but there was no one to kind of check them and say guys maybe we

[00:49:57] should go back and clarify this a little bit and i don't always need a show to spoon feed me i actually hate it when they do that but i needed a little more i wanted a little more maybe it's just because

[00:50:09] i love it a whole lot and i just want more is more um but yeah i was confused about the spot and like what that meant to both of them i guess it doesn't really matter and my imagination can

[00:50:23] kind of do the work there but i just kind of want to know like what did they use to keep there together because jimmy didn't know about clowy being in that that whole like

[00:50:33] yeah he did he did yeah jimmy jimmy knew that okay yeah okay now i feel dumb explain but you but you know i think trey and jimmy put her in there together when trey was like your cocaine

[00:50:45] caused her to die you gotta help me let's put her in the spot oh is that okay see i thought that that's what it was and then i'm like no no that can't be it but that is it okay i caught i caught

[00:50:56] that the spot in the second watch too because i agree with you the the first time it's just so much is going on you do miss those but i kind of like the idea penny that it might have been a hang

[00:51:06] out because obviously there must be some kind of way for oxygen to stay down there because you know charlie was able to you know to stay alive down there for at least a some amount of time

[00:51:18] but yeah it was it was kind of put in there when he talked about i need the spot again or i don't remember the exact i need to use the spot yeah so i assumed that that meant on my

[00:51:28] first watch i just assumed like okay jimmy is aware but this is what threw me on my second watch there's a look that jimmy gives when they put um charlie in there the first time he looks down

[00:51:41] in that hole before they throw her down in there and he like looks back at trey with some kind of like what the fuck did you do bro he has this like suspicious look in his eye and you didn't

[00:51:52] catch that look it's there it's very much there it's very prominent and i was like okay so he doesn't know i thought it was just like guilt on his face that he was like oh god there's

[00:52:04] clothe's body she's still in there we might need a third watch i know i i did watch this three time this was a three watcher for me with note taking and stuff it wasn't any clearer the third time i'm

[00:52:15] telling you because i've really zoomed in on that moment when when trey looks down in that hole he sees something that doesn't that unsettles him and he turns back and he has this like

[00:52:26] what the fuck suspicious man you did something what and he turns and like looks over his shoulder at trey and i was like what does this mean but then it confuses it confused me because um

[00:52:39] because he has it's like this revelatory look on his face when he pulls out the poster so it almost seems like trey is aware of something in the beginning and then like he has a amnesia

[00:52:54] brain and then he kind of hasn't thank you jimmy and then he has like a realization of like okay trey did something to do with cloe and then he kind of forgets again and then when charlie is saying at the

[00:53:05] end he is the one who killed cloe it's him it's him he has this very slow realization moment and i'm like okay dude so are you do you know or do you not know do you know

[00:53:19] or do you not know i feel like it was unclear i don't know i thought the realization that he had was that trey played him at the end there he was like so you because he put together his

[00:53:31] himself the whole women be crazy thing and he's like i trey you're i think you're just a serial killer and i'm not gonna let you do this anymore um i think that was the revelation that he had

[00:53:46] that trey was never his friend and trey maybe isn't even capable of being a friend yeah yeah yeah for sure for sure i guess i just felt like on my second watch i i felt like

[00:53:59] he didn't know that trey killed cloe because they were the only two who knew about the hidey hole so i mean i i i mean sorry i felt like jimmy didn't know that cloe was even in that that hidey hole

[00:54:13] i thought he did know but i mean yeah i mean i went back and forth like i said i this is what i'm saying this is why i think that it's it's unclear and it's a little vague not in the good way not in

[00:54:25] the way that oh it makes me think it's kind of in a way of like no wait now i just now please just tell me yeah yeah yeah i i mean i think his realization like he always thought like you know

[00:54:37] it was an accidental death she you know the cocaine was bad she fell she hit her head and trey just wanted to get rid of her and brought jimmy into a blamed him because of your cocaine she died

[00:54:49] now we get now we're in this together we gotta hide her we'll put her in the spot and then he lived with that guilt of her being on his on his uh family's land i guess that makes more

[00:55:00] sense i guess it does i mean i think that that's the right but you're right that look was there i mean it was a realization that this this is not the first time he's done this look he's doing it again

[00:55:10] you know he's he's yeah it's he's maybe realizing like maybe that wasn't an accident the first time yeah there was just inconsistency on the jimmy storyline of his moments when he realized things and was suspicious of trey and then moments when he was clearly unaware that trey had

[00:55:28] done anything you know culminating at the end when he's oh my god it's you you're the monster when charlie is saying it's him i'm telling you it's him it's like yes jimmy how many more times do

[00:55:41] you need red flag arrows pointing to the guy you know i i was like i i felt like jimmy's character was inconsistently written his intelligence level kept changing you know yeah that's true like

[00:55:53] he should have been on to trey from the beginning and i don't know i don't know what he should have done because he was sort of trapped once trey showed up there with with you know needing the spot um

[00:56:06] i don't know how he could have gotten rid of trey yeah i mean he would have said like dump charlie and then get out of here and then he could have called the police and been like this guy did

[00:56:15] this but he would then he would have had to admit that he had been part of the clowy cover-up it's a real weird abuse of relationship i mean you know but i i also could have just said no man

[00:56:28] i'm not helping you click but yeah but he's yeah why does he help him that's another good question i think jimmy is lonely as fuck yeah and trey he really wanted a chance to say to trey like

[00:56:43] where the fuck have you been man for years and i'm not sure he realized that trey was going to show up with a body when trey was like i'm coming over man i need your help oh no i think that part

[00:56:57] was a surprise he said i need to use the spot yeah god that line i need to use the spot he has to they definitely put clowy in that hole they definitely did they did right yeah together

[00:57:09] yeah it's just something about the rest of the episode really had me questioning that you know but it was it was so small and so quick you might be gonna possibly miss it i know i didn't

[00:57:23] earn it in the second time well and then it was negated by later reactions of the way that that jimmy was acting though you know so that's yeah that's what i mean but yeah uh

[00:57:36] i um i i was wondering why trey needed help like why did he ask jimmy for permission to use the hidey hole he said i need to use the spot and he i think it's on jimmy's land

[00:57:52] see this is what i mean like a little yeah jimmy inherited that motel from his family that's all he has in the world is that hotel and yeah i the spot is close to it

[00:58:03] i mean i guess but there was very little like timeline accuracy was weird because there's another line that jimmy says where he's like you mean you've been back for six months and now

[00:58:13] i'm just hearing from you it's like well you guys haven't spoken in over a year so why are you surprised that he's been back for six months and hasn't contacted you like that was weird

[00:58:21] and then the location of the hidey hole was also unclear well i feel like i'm not hearing from someone for years if they live like far away but if they come home to your hometown and they

[00:58:31] don't live there yeah and he doesn't say like hey man i'm back in town like that's that's that's jerk behavior that that means they're not friends no i mean but like they hadn't spoken in years and so just having been back for six months it's like well

[00:58:46] he acts like how have you not contacted you know now you're i'm just hearing from you now and you've been back for six months and that's like well but you've been you guys have been

[00:58:53] out of contact for longer than six months it's been you know it just seems strange the way that it was delivered i grew up in a teeny tiny town and i know that when i would go like back to see

[00:59:04] my family or whatever and if i ran into someone from high school and i hadn't told them i was in town they would give me the business yeah they'd be like i didn't know you were in town i would

[00:59:15] have met you for a drink or lunch or breakfast and i'd be like i only have 36 hours and then i have to leave again like um and i would feel guilty as fuck but like if you're stuck in a small town

[00:59:26] it's big news with one of your friends comes back to visit yeah however short and then an amount of time maybe it's just that they see each other around the town and they like kind of give each

[00:59:36] other like that one arm wave like that one hand like sub dude at the grocery store in the local coffee shop and they don't actually talk maybe um yeah i sound like i'm hearing myself right now

[00:59:47] and i sound like i have a lot of issues with this episode i really don't i it's just because we're talking about it in such great detail that i'm like i want to clarify some of these things

[00:59:57] but back to the hidey hole thing like where is it located um that was one thing that yeah on my second watch i wanted some more clarity because i just i kind of couldn't get over that why does

[01:00:10] he have to ask jimmy for help to use the spot you know yeah but i think that's actually jimmy is jimmy's land because when charlie crawled out of the hole and like she was very quickly no

[01:00:24] she could see the sign for the motel like it was close how did i miss that there it is yeah thank you okay and she also got right yeah i saw that you're right i i also took a little note like

[01:00:34] she really got there very quick because an amount or or the time that passed from when they dumped her to the time that she was able to climb out of there or what wake up from panjya like from panjya

[01:00:46] says crawl all the way out and then crawl over there like but i mean i didn't need to suspend any disbelief in that it's just it like the timing was fast it was really quick yeah it was

[01:00:55] dramatically perfect right because of course trey was about to leave and then bang bang bang that's incredibly true yeah charlie could not go far the physical strength it would take to crawl through the snow when oh my god she clearly had like a compound fracture or something

[01:01:15] like that in her thigh so like she was in excruciating pain and probably a massive concussion and i just i can't imagine having that much determination as very impressive i actually know somebody who did something like that in real life he um he was crushed under a tractor

[01:01:38] and uh crawled home to get help and it was like over a mile and he dragged himself home and then it took like two years for him to walk again yeah crazy and i remember hearing the story

[01:01:55] being like i never knew that person was that like had that in him like i'm sure they didn't either in years yeah that that noise that natasha leon makes when she's like yeah but like yeah i like

[01:02:09] went right through me yeah that's some serious pain she was in that's what i mean i had to pause and like take a moment it was tough to watch oh man okay wow that was a lot let's go back to

[01:02:23] points a little bit um erica i think we're back to you my goodness where do we even go from there okay give me one moment um this episode was very difficult though to separate into points

[01:02:36] i found very hard everything was so right it was so interwoven i was i was like everything is relating to everything it's yeah it was mad the same problem messy yeah okay i'm glad i'm not alone here

[01:02:49] i'm really trying to stick with the format so apologies for being so like in everyone's everything everything everywhere all at once yeah yeah i mean i kind of i kind of very still stuck with that

[01:03:02] with spot if it's okay if we kind of decide there was a couple things i wanted to talk about with that one um because i wanted to get to morty because her character was just amazing i don't we'll get that um

[01:03:16] i i i kind of thought back to the the spot and the spots and then the significance of it it's the it's a grave of cloy um you know charlie was thrown in there twice it's now also the grave of jimmy

[01:03:29] so it's just like it has become this horrible like gaping hole of where she is and and how did she get there but how she like you know survives as she climbs out of it not once but twice or

[01:03:41] however she gets out of this place it's it's just it was pretty remarkable but um thinking about and i'm trying to like just right collect my thoughts of where we're at is that the transition

[01:03:54] from when she was at magic mountain and how beautiful it was it was like things were sparkling literally sparking sparkling her her hottie was like gleaming in the sunlight and then when

[01:04:05] it transitioned to february it's like it's like oh my god like i and it was really funny and i hope this is not a tangent but when i heard the title escape from shim mountain i thought of escape to which

[01:04:20] mountain which was a dizzy movie from the 70s so yeah we did too and it's been a very long time since i saw it i don't know if anybody brought it up i'm like does this have anything to do with

[01:04:30] this other than it's just funny but and i like i don't think this movie had anything to do with a cabin and killing people it's been a while since i saw that movie but i thought it was great

[01:04:41] but i was just thinking about the darkness that she was in if we just went back when she was waiting for morty and then she saw the deer and it was just staring at her and it was just so

[01:04:53] different such a different feeling from the end tone from the rest of the show like every other episode didn't have this kind of weird other worldly kind of feel to it where she connected

[01:05:03] with this animal it just it was interesting but it kind and it didn't take me out it just it didn't feel like the same show and i don't know if you guys how you guys felt about the stag and

[01:05:13] it's how it represented like when i think of stags and things like um you know that they always have this kind of like it's like a fantasy symbolic or magic yeah right yeah it's

[01:05:26] like narnia and shadow and bone um i you guys are totally god damn i'm so mad i was yeah i always do this i always whenever i encounter an animal in the world which doesn't happen very often in new

[01:05:40] york um sometimes it does where they're like a bird will fly onto my window or something and i'll have like a moment with it and i'll look up the meaning of this particular bird but

[01:05:49] yeah when i'm especially living in an area or staying in an area where there's a lot of like woodland creatures and like in florida where my parents live we always call my mom the forest ranger because he loves that's her favorite part of living in florida is like

[01:06:02] the animals and the wildlife she gets to just she's fascinated and so we're always looking up what is the meaning of this animal and i was going to do that with the stag so let me pardon

[01:06:12] me will i google continue talking yeah definitely and i i'm thinking there was um was there there was a stag even in house of dragons right like wasn't it the big huge white stag

[01:06:23] i don't know if any of you guys are um that that viscera's couldn't kill yeah and that ranira decided not to kill right she had the opportunity and she chose not to yeah and it's

[01:06:38] ranira or ranir i get the two confused ranira ranira because ranir is her his or her aunt yeah but i it just like but that and i when i was rewatching it and just again like the there's

[01:06:48] like muted of all color it was it was just beautiful and serene and the eyes and the extreme close-up of this deer and then um of course the frantic scary like you know

[01:07:01] afterwards what she she gets hit um but it just like you know it kind of took me out not out of the show but kind of out of that world for a moment i'm like where

[01:07:10] you know this doesn't feel like the same show but not in a bad way and then i was thinking again at the end when trey was running through the um the forest to get back to his home

[01:07:22] and he saw the stag but this time rather than the the stag looking at him straightforward it was kind of looking him from the back and put his butt to him yeah so and then walked away like

[01:07:32] yeah yeah like yeah just my ass help yourself yeah yeah yeah definitely but but uh i i don't know if that stag was warning her i i didn't quite get that because she's like are you warning me about

[01:07:44] something i don't know but but it's the the stag i felt i got a very protective vibe and then when the stag ran out onto the road to meet that car i don't know why these animals do that

[01:08:00] i don't know why but you know but the way that it was almost like it was in front of charlie it was like trying to stop the car for her it was like you know that's the vibe i got was was like

[01:08:11] beware there's something up ahead don't hit this girl you know protecting her like trying to put itself before charlie which it didn't work did not work because trey does that thing where you

[01:08:24] swerve in the road because you almost hit something and then you turn and look over your shoulder for like 30 seconds yes seconds i'm like dude eyes on the road eyes on the road people what

[01:08:37] i was about to say people don't do that in real life all they do thing but then i was like you know i only know what i do in real life when i swerve in the road and it's not

[01:08:49] look behind me because i'm not an idiot he's also drunk off coconut rum that's true yeah and then he hits someone and what does he do he doesn't get out of the car oh my god like jump

[01:09:01] sleeping to his feet no he swigs more of his freaking rum he's like i need a drink to handle this god i don't know now i got this burden on my hands i'm like oh i'm actually shocked that i'm shocked

[01:09:13] that he stopped to be honest but well he didn't want to yeah i think that um just said the accident and um just looking back i i just don't again i don't know how she survived that but it looks

[01:09:26] like he clipped her with his um side mirror yeah maybe that mirror came off and that's probably why she didn't get more injured because she wasn't she wasn't hit with the actual body of the car but

[01:09:38] it was it was it was such a dark horrible moment and actually and i apologize i'm going back when we first see the person get hit you see you don't know if it's who if a person is a male or a

[01:09:52] female but you see those boots and then i remember looking at her boots when she was with morty at the gas station and i'm like oh it wouldn't be her she was not dead right they really they

[01:10:05] really sucker punched us with that one i was like wow okay i wasn't expecting her to get hit by a car yeah not at all it's it's almost become my expectation of this show to subvert my expectations

[01:10:17] because every time they're it's like their their format is to break the format is kind of what it is you know which is so awesome i'm loving it but i was like not as shocked as i would have been if

[01:10:29] this were an earlier episode you know what i mean i was still shocked i was not expecting that that half dead person at the door to be charlie i really wasn't so that was cool

[01:10:38] so before we get too off of it i do want to say stag symbolism um includes stamina virility grace instincts maturity regeneration and spiritual enlightenment the stag sometimes referred to as heart hart is exalted among other deer he is mature and experienced having endured life's challenges

[01:11:01] and he has a massive crown of antlers to show for it because stags are native to every continent except australian and antartica they are subjects in the mythology and folklore of many ancient cultures in addition the stag spirit animal appears in the spiritual belief systems and cultures around

[01:11:18] the world oh yeah okay that was kind of sorry kind of got a little less interesting at the end there but mature and experienced and experienced having endured life's challenges that's charlie

[01:11:28] that's charlie all right she is the it reminds me of um yellow jackets right like yeah antler queen mm-hmm she's a barassian right spot on oh charlie well done well done writers that was that was great

[01:11:48] yeah that although it was a very CGI looking yeah yeah um i was like they could have done better than that but well man they have budget to spend i'm enjoying where they're putting their money

[01:12:01] i don't mind a cgi deer it was totally fine but yeah i was like what is this what is going on here but totally different at the end when when trey encountered it yes animals know they know

[01:12:13] when you're a piece of shit yeah deer are kind of magical um when you see them in real life they're so uh alert they have that like on the tips of their toes quality about them and and their

[01:12:28] eyes are so freaking big um we were up at my mom's house in new hampshire one time and there was like a herd of deer in her yard just like walking through the yard and my little niece was with us

[01:12:40] and she was about four at the time and she was like are those reindeer and we were all like yeah sure yeah those are reindeer and she's like is grandma santa claus and we were all like yeah okay

[01:12:55] yeah grandma santa claus grandma santa claus that's amazing i'm i'm lucky i live i live behind uh we have a little bit of a stretch of forest behind our house and we we get deer my husband doesn't

[01:13:08] like it so much because they like to eat his plants but it's okay they're really cute they're pretty but yes i agree they're and they're very like protective of each other because like once one's

[01:13:19] alert it kind of sends that signal out to the other so that they know it's time to get away but he was recognizing one of his own he's like hey yeah she's just like me yeah yeah i think that

[01:13:31] that's what that deer was doing absolutely all right penny let's go back to you are we are we good on that point erica i don't think i have anything else on that i again like i said there's a lot

[01:13:44] in there but those were some things that i picked up in there that i felt like it would be good to talk about excellent um i wanted to talk a little bit about the proust references

[01:13:57] marcel proust is a very well known author from the 20th century he was french his novels are often regarded as some of the most important and accomplished works of the 20th century they're also very often acknowledged as being incredibly difficult to get through and almost

[01:14:18] nobody has read them um they were famously sort of lampooned in uh little miss sunshine where the uncle is a proust scholar and there's a lot of jokes at his expense about how he's

[01:14:31] the foremost proust scholar in america and everyone's like who cares um but uh it came up because charlie was explaining to the hot guy that pine trees take her back to memory of

[01:14:46] shitty christmas memories um and so that's why she doesn't like pine trees and he says proustian and it's because proust is associated with um he has written a lot about themes of remembering

[01:15:00] things especially when they are very closely tied to a sense um and yeah the a quick definition of proustian it's a relating to or characteristic of the french writer marcel proust or his works particularly with reference to the recovery of the lost past and the stimulation of unconscious

[01:15:18] memory so there it is um there is a very close connection in our brains between smells and memories we store our memories in a section of the brain that's like right next to it's like

[01:15:33] neighbors with the smell senses memories and so um smells can trigger memories in a way that a lot of other things can't like just words or photos or things like that smells are sort of like a time

[01:15:48] machine right they like take you back to that place in time and so she references it with the pine trees but then again with the smell of coconut because she smelled coconut on trey's

[01:16:00] breath and it took her back to her childhood at anaheim shores beach club where she had to wear a smurfette monocony i had that one oh my god i totally had that smurfette monocony i have

[01:16:13] to see if i have a picture somewhere that's amazing my god please do um and then she smells it again when um jimmy gives her the cup of the coconut rum and she smells it and she's

[01:16:24] like anaheim shores proustian um i feel like they didn't explain that enough for anybody who didn't know about proust but um that's proust i wrote it down and i'm so glad you mentioned it

[01:16:38] because i didn't get a chance to look it up i love it i learned something new today see this is what i mean about smart writing though because i enjoy things like this where i know about proustian i

[01:16:50] know that generally what they were what the meaning of that was but i did still like look it up and now i feel a little smarter and now i have a new word to add to my vocabulary that i'm enjoying

[01:17:00] i'm enjoying the idea of thinking of using it in the future you know and i like shows that do that don't spoon feed it this is a good example of that you know writing doesn't always have to be

[01:17:10] like handed to you like do a little more on it and there wasn't a ton of exposition about it i always feel a little bit like my education is incomplete because i've never read any proust but

[01:17:23] word i don't know if i'm ever gonna get to it at this point just so you ask you was enough for me to get through i feel like for a lifetime i never did that

[01:17:32] either it's it's a i just have a thing for russian writers it's my my check off love got me it's check off gateway drug you know anyway that'll do it what you were saying yeah

[01:17:43] check off is the game so yeah that was my point about sense memories and and prusty and and we've seen you know charlie learned about this earlier in the season with uh um the wood that she learned

[01:17:56] how to smell at the barbecue joint with um what was the guy the nice guy's name at the barbecue place that she liked so much oh um i know i try to remember people's names from other

[01:18:08] episodes do and it's like so hard i remember the bad guy was uh like taffy taffy the uh taffy the right um she also pulled up um you know another skill that she's learned in her travels was um

[01:18:24] taking the ankle monitor because she did something similar in the retirement home episode where she had the heart monitor on and was able to call for help using that and so she i don't know if it was

[01:18:39] just instinct or if she really knew what she was doing but by grabbing that ankle monitor she guaranteed that the police would find her even if she died in the woods there i like i feel

[01:18:51] i feel like if charlie were to be in the position of the mom in everywhere everything everywhere all at once she would have done just fine like she has training embedded in her from

[01:19:01] somewhere i don't know she's training herself up she's like a freaking ninja in life you know but i think that charlie and colombo have that in common where colombo always uses his senses

[01:19:12] sense of smell it's a it's a it's a thing you can't teach it's what makes a great detective the same thing with jessica fletcher she's got it too always aware of your surroundings

[01:19:24] noticing sounds oh that bird i remember hearing that chirp chirp you know of that bird that only exists in this part of the country which will come back around later to catch the murderer you

[01:19:34] know so it's like um yeah it's just such a um classic like agatha christy invented this of all her detectives um having this heightened sense of awareness and their sensory uh taste touch

[01:19:50] feel um their hearing it's more attuned than the average person and charlie is just like that as well yeah and uh hilariously now when i finish an episode of poker face on peacock it rolls over

[01:20:06] and starts playing monk which is the most observant of all the tv detectives right yes see that it's it's a it's a through line i don't think it's not i don't think it's yeah every great

[01:20:17] detective has this this thing and it's like yeah you're born with it that like heightened sense of awareness i think it makes a good i think i always relate everything to acting but i feel like

[01:20:28] it's a huge part of acting yeah that awareness too of like because you use your senses of other people right and their body language and and the way they say things and then applying it to a

[01:20:39] character i mean yeah have to be very observant to be a good actor not to be a bad actor but to be a good actor yeah and using your senses though to like take you back to a certain time

[01:20:50] to give you a feeling to remember how a character might have felt because you have experienced a similar feeling and a quick way in for me i know i'm a big taste smell person huge with that so

[01:21:03] i use that a lot as like a quick way to get into character um you can call it a you can call it a method you can call it being a bad actor because i can't do it on my own just with my brain

[01:21:14] cells but whatever you know i need i use little tricks i think all actors do that kind of thing yeah sense memory is also used all the time in like therapy and and you know recovering memories

[01:21:27] and things like that it's just an all around important human skill totally i can't go to bed without my little essential oil blend you know that puts me right to sleep i don't

[01:21:37] know what it does but i'm not questioning it you know works yeah smells do that to you charlie charlie's just great i really she needs to get in with like the fbi or something and you know

[01:21:52] i'm hoping next week that the um the fbi agent comes back and somehow he can help protect charlie from cliff um i mean he's not the best fbi agent in the world as we discussed at the time like he

[01:22:08] was really sleeping on the job but i do think he could help charlie um which she needs and not not not to go off but i really hope with the next episode that they give us a little bit of

[01:22:22] more information on how cliff got there because i think that was probably i don't want to say bothered me but it did only because i'm like i was like so happy for a moment when she's like

[01:22:32] i'm dead i'm dead and then he's there and i i need to know really detailed to detail how the hell did he figure out that she was there oh yeah well once they announced on the news that she was

[01:22:44] dead that makes sense to me that he would be like oh that he would hear about charlie kale being dead in denver but why is he there if he thinks she's dead does he know she's alive it's unclear

[01:22:56] i think because he was at the hospital he he knows that she's in there and he's like just gotta tell me how deep to dig the hole and i'm like hey man there's a sadly there's a hole that already dug

[01:23:07] yeah the spot still there i don't like the spot exists anymore they had to go and unearth all the dead bodies right yeah that's a hot spot now so don't use the spot um yeah

[01:23:21] or do because we don't that is a crime scene we know we know charlie can get out of that spot right yeah with a point stick oh stabby stick oh stabby stick yeah yeah actually i'm gonna

[01:23:33] toss it back to erica and you have a point about morty and we all have a point about morty i'm sure so if we're ready to move there i think we shall we should yeah i mean i i think that my favorite

[01:23:45] and i know we you guys like to reserve to lines but just like the perfect part was what she's when charlie was saying like you know similar pneumatic uh minus eclipton mania and then morty's

[01:23:56] response was sorry don't do sex stuff was like kind of like what this is more yes morty is like such a little badass and oh my god um very tragic character but also just it's sad that she just was

[01:24:11] like she's too tough like she didn't realize like how horrible trey was and her her demise was like horrible like i think it grossed me out so much more even more than when charlie got stabbed like

[01:24:24] it just was so violent so aggressive so um you know like he picked her head and like just bashed it in there like it just hurt me so much but um but just her character the fact that she is this

[01:24:38] really street smart um extremely talented pocket thief and like you know pick pocket that i think i tried to write down how many times she stole her wallet and it was that i knew it was

[01:24:49] running five or six times yeah it was like and i love i love how she steals her wallet charlie doesn't even she knows she doesn't have any money she just it's like a she just enjoys doing it she

[01:24:59] just does it for fun she just pick pockets her repeatedly i just want to look back and see like how did she get it this time how did you get at that time but i think she was she

[01:25:08] when she was adorable um and and just you know you could see that she's like she just kind of lives with the moment but it just like her her dryness is really what kind of like you know made

[01:25:21] me love her as so much and i'm assuming that's why charlie was like ah you're so cute and cuddly even though you're a thief come on let's go and kept on i don't even say forgiving her but just

[01:25:30] kind of accepting the fact that this is what she is she is a thief she's going to keep on doing it um and you know but i i think that um the fact that she was she went by more and more

[01:25:43] burnstein the entire show episode we never find out her real name it's just again just kind of and she never corrects her it just it was just it was it was really funny but it's really it's

[01:25:55] really sad to like how you know she ended but when she went out and started taking all that evidence i'm like oh god why did you have to tell him stop telling him stop confronting him

[01:26:05] he is a horrible person he's already you know but but yeah i think that um you know this one's for you morty yeah right seriously she was adorable and and you can tell her we kind of enjoyed

[01:26:20] how good she was at pickpocketing like charlie was like that was a good one give her a happy break again like she was cute and i could see a world where the two of them traveled together for a little while

[01:26:32] right like oh yeah like as a team i love when she uh first meets her and she's like all right whoa slow down there hacky sack she just like and and she does they did such a good job of just conveying

[01:26:47] like her hair and her the way that her eyes are kind of red like she's just stoned all the time and and did you guys catch the similarities right between morty and marge because yeah okay

[01:26:59] they're both they're both drug dealers right that they both can offer like i got kody and perk is said you want some coconut you know and like and they uh both talk about big well

[01:27:09] marge talked about big pharma she's like it's the same stuff doctors use big pharma doesn't want you to know and then morty is like oh no chains are a myth by big automotive yes and then

[01:27:18] that's a good catch yeah and then um marge wants the she's like i'm getting not gonna hook up vibes like she wants to she's down for the sex stuff and morty's like i don't do sex stuff but they

[01:27:28] both bring it up you know yeah and they're both played by oscar nominated amazing actresses actors sorry i don't know why i just use the word actresses i like never used that term i mean

[01:27:41] whatever they're women actors but i i just say actors and actors and actor um and yeah hong chow was nominated for the whale so amazing i love yeah they're up against each other this year

[01:27:54] in the right which is is that this weekend it is it's not tonight yes it's tomorrow it's always on a monday right yeah no it's next week oh it's next week okay um yep i will not be watching it

[01:28:09] i gave up on the oscar's many years same i'm like done with that yeah me too i i do usually check like facebook for updates yeah curious and i i you know but it's okay i agree i i don't really

[01:28:22] watch them anymore so my last thing that i want to say about morty oh go ahead sorry erica i'm jumping all over your point here no no you're not jumping at all i actually appreciate i'm just

[01:28:33] trying to see if there's anything else that i wanted to add in here um i don't think so i think a lot of the things i started writing down kind of was like what was being observed around morty but no i think

[01:28:46] no whatever else you want to add in please do okay so my favorite morty moment was when she pulls a gun on trey right i was on the edge of my seat at this point in the episode and morty man i freaking

[01:29:01] i freaking loved her she's such a badass like you said did you lose this why don't you put that down before someone gets hurt hurt seems like that bird has flown trey i think i just caught the

[01:29:11] psychopathic asshole who hit my friend in the road and buried her in a tree yeah you left your dipshit footprints at a crime scene and it was a gnarly crime scene which what a fucking idiot

[01:29:22] yeah he's such a douche oh he just like clumps around the world just like like pooping out his butt leaving his crap all over the place and doesn't even realize like he's leaving a trail

[01:29:35] oh what an idiot and so she goes that's cloey jones in there uh so between that and the low jack on your ankle i'm starting to think you've got quite a lot to lose here trey and he goes tell

[01:29:46] me what you want that was the first smart thing you said all night i was like yes morty when she pulled that gun i was like yes yes i got so excited and but then sadly it was kind of like

[01:30:01] two cocky assholes go in like whip and they're dicks at each other and you know who's the cocky or asshole we all want morty to win obviously like she's the kind of cocky asshole

[01:30:10] that we love we love that funny yeah trace yeah and she's also like not a murderer she's gonna like steal from you a little bit but she's definitely not gonna and she calls um charlie her friend

[01:30:26] like you hit my friend in the street and then buried her in a tree so she's a good person she just you know she's got a got a board she goes where the snow goes and that life ain't cheap so she has her she did charlie's car

[01:30:40] yeah and try to leave driving it to denver to look for you silly but she's endearing yeah she's so cute she's just really is and the hair with the like seashells in it even though

[01:30:55] she's in a snowy mountain i'm like i know what are you doing yeah so i know it's so funny the way that like hippies i mean hippies the way that like surfer dudes and like snowboarders have that

[01:31:07] that that similar vibe even though it's totally different set it you know one is completely beach and one is completely snow and mountains but same same soul you know there's a lot of

[01:31:18] crossover a lot of people do both yeah yeah yeah and she did also call out his big dick at energy when she said like who else drops three 300k on a car yeah bless you something to compensate for

[01:31:31] she's like so you're the guy the guy who drops 300 grand on a car just to show the world how big is what a big dick he has and he said something like yeah that's me or guilty or something

[01:31:43] he meant said which i'm surprised by um well because he knows he's about to kill her so he doesn't care yeah right he's already decided to kill her at that point so he's just like uh-huh

[01:31:55] yep mm-hmm getting the right position for me to make it look like an accident um sending that car off the cliff like when he like pushed the car and i was like oh he's gonna

[01:32:06] make it look like she crashed i was not prepared for the cliff that he pushed it off of like that was a long fucking drop and the car landed on its roof i was like the violence of that was just

[01:32:19] shocking yeah it was a hard one and then he's all like i didn't want to wreck my car oh my god the chick was getting crazy on him again yeah i hate when that happens yeah whatever you

[01:32:35] like try to murder women and they like react at all i mean so out of bounds what are they doing i was i was just looking back through my notes and i realized that i didn't discuss something

[01:32:49] about um jimmy and trey the difference like that is clearly shown between the two when when they realized that charlie can't remember who hit her and i love the part where she goes you were there

[01:33:03] and and trey looks nervous but she's talking about the deer on the wall or the stag on the wall and that was kind of funny it's going loose yeah the moose yeah moose god that was she

[01:33:14] she refers to the motel as a haunted moose lodge i really i loved it so so they go in in their little they have like a sidebar and jimmy says well she's alive so that's good news and trey goes the only

[01:33:28] good news is that she has a classic case of crs can't remember shit with any luck she's fucking concussed permanent brain damage and jimmy goes don't say that and all trey is worried

[01:33:38] about is getting caught outside of his house on you know by his parole officer but yeah that moment was just such a clear shows the you know stark differences between these two guys and the way that

[01:33:51] jimmy just naturally like don't even think that she might have permanent brain damage and when jimmy says you remember what happened think hard he goes not too hard like don't press her man leave her alone

[01:34:05] that was funny i have a question though there's a line that they said that i did another thing about their this relationship that i didn't understand when they're making the beds and like

[01:34:13] trying to figure out what to do about the girls and he says why didn't why don't you open your wallet double the reward and if they keep their mouth shut you know just pay him off that's what you do

[01:34:22] isn't it and trey goes my god it's not like you didn't take the money because you did didn't you and now you're trying to play all wounded and throw throw back in my face 10 years later

[01:34:32] what are they talking about i assume that after jimmy helped trey hide cloey's body trey in addition to making him feel like it was partially his fault because of the cocaine also paid him off but probably not enough money for jimmy to get out of that shitty town

[01:34:50] yes but this is what's confusing to me why would you pay someone if it's their fault you see what i mean well it was like both their fault i think i i don't think trey

[01:35:01] was trying to make it out to only be jimmy's fault i don't know but he clearly paid him off back then to keep him be quiet yeah like him to be quiet maybe to keep it on his land and yeah

[01:35:14] like jimmy might have been like no come on man we got to go to the cops and trey was like what if i gave you ten thousand dollars um and i'm guessing jimmy settled for a an amount that

[01:35:25] was not nearly as much as he could have gotten oh yeah i feel like there is no bottom to that wealth of money you know he's got so much freaking money doesn't know what to do with it

[01:35:37] literally he doesn't know what to do with it which makes the no tipping thing even worse it's like you have the money you asshole you got so much money like oh oh because i like will not

[01:35:49] order food sometimes when i'm just like oh but the restaurant is really far away and i don't want to spend all that money on a tip because i won't order food if i can't tip well yeah

[01:36:00] you know especially if the restaurant's far but anyway sorry getting back to the point um yeah i definitely i definitely wanted because i i on my second watch i like had to stop and i kept

[01:36:10] rewinding the parts where they were talking because i'm like is it gonna make more sense no it still doesn't make that much sense yeah i think it is what it is but um these actors know

[01:36:24] i they know clearly but i i don't know i want to know yeah trey paid him off and uh okay and then left town right like and then jimmy was just like oh it sucks to be here with guilt looking at this

[01:36:38] girl's face every day like i didn't really think this through right right yeah i guess i guess i i kept getting confused about how trey made jimmy feel so guilty that it was like all his fault

[01:36:52] and if that's the case why would you give him a bunch of money but i guess since they both did it together trey was involved slightly and it is on trey's land so there's that so he is taking a lot

[01:37:05] more of the risk sorry i keep getting their names i know it's really cute thank you for correcting me though sorry sorry guys oh i just don't want to get notes from the youth from the

[01:37:17] listeners i think that at i know 67 jade meant to say jimmy instead of trey yeah oh i do it often too i get all excited yeah so there's a little bit more questions i have about

[01:37:33] jimmy i feel like but um penny what more do you have because um i just wanted to be a little annoying for a minute and talk about depictions of snow and snow storms on tv and in movies um it drives me

[01:37:51] crazy when they show like a snowstorm on tv and everybody's able to just like walk across the like quarter inch of accumulation that's on the road or the driveway right like at no point did it

[01:38:05] seem like the roads weren't passable but they were all like the roads are closed and i'm like where is the snow like and it wasn't windy like it just seemed like a normal winter night

[01:38:17] but it was supposed to be this big storm that was like knocking out the power and everything i i just get tired of seeing winter depicted as just not in a realistic way i want to see

[01:38:30] people walking through snow drifts that are up to their knees i want to see them like wet and cold from being out in the snow without coats and stuff on like traite didn't even have socks on he

[01:38:43] was wearing fucking driving moccasins like i wanted to see him suffer and be like dealing with frost bite i just i get frustrated by it i also get frustrated by people not knowing how to drive

[01:38:56] in the snow but this also bothers me in real life like slow the fuck down when the roads are slippery and especially when the roads are windy and you can't see around blind corners

[01:39:09] so people out there who are listening if you don't know how to drive in the snow get someone who's experienced at it to teach you and don't go really fast on slippery roads

[01:39:20] because that is the number one way that you will probably not kill yourself but kill other people so i guess a psa i happen to be really really good at driving in the snow and i've

[01:39:31] taught a lot of people um but i worked at it when i was in high school i used to go to um empty parking lots after snow storms and like practice skids and um that's smart though and practice doing

[01:39:44] donuts i mean some of it was just for fun because you can slip around all over the place in a big empty parking lot it's kind of awesome but um also i wanted to know how to handle it east coast

[01:39:55] kids gotta find their fun and snow yeah you know it can't you got to make it fun somehow otherwise you just it's six months of of nightmare also uh nobody seemed to have an emergency kit in

[01:40:06] their car my father would have like had a heart attack over this episode where like people were stuck in the snow without their blanket bag of cat litter road flare emergency first aid kit like

[01:40:20] all the stuff that my dad always made sure was always in the trunk of my car even in the middle of summer but you know at least it well charlie charlie couldn't even afford to put gas in our

[01:40:30] car i was wondering yeah well we'll give it but but you know trey yeah you would think he would have something in his car yeah anything like just for emergencies uh i don't know it really

[01:40:40] it like hurt me it hurt the part of me that that is my father's daughter who was like no but you need your emergency supplies in the winter like he would not have let me leave the house

[01:40:50] without a blanket and all that other stuff like even if i was like dad i'm just going up the street he'd be like well do you have the flares like it it was very important to him you know what i

[01:41:01] i don't have any and i'm i'm in you know philly so i now i think i need to update my my stuff in my car thank you thank you penny you're welcome so snow driving that's just a nitpick of mine

[01:41:15] thank you penny psa from penny you heard it here first um where are we now erica you got any more um just i have a note um and it was such a quick reference it was when

[01:41:31] it was when charlie and morty were realizing that uh trey and jimmy were not really quite like who they were supposed to be and when they were trying to use the phone and it like

[01:41:43] extreme close-up of that red phone like the receiver and and that was just like all you saw and i'm like okay that's that's really like you know eye-catching and um it kind of stopped me

[01:41:56] because i'm like well yeah it's obviously like they hear no sound but like where did that come from like where was it was it a reference to something but it was just something i noticed that was like

[01:42:05] oh okay that that really kind of you know amplified the the feeling that must they must have felt that nothing was coming out although trey is a terrible actor i know um but yeah um i i

[01:42:22] also really loved the um the uh the shining reference what she said um i've always been the caretaker i'm like yes oh my god when he's okay so i have it written down he says do you know what happened

[01:42:35] i'm dead i died on ship mountain i've always been the caretaker you're not dead do you know what happened hello little twiggy friend where did you come from hey hey can you focus on me right now

[01:42:46] mr serious focus man hello so good i mean it's so it was so hard right like right yeah she'd been very hard hit on her on her head they honestly um should not have encouraged her to sleep after a

[01:43:04] head injury like that but i guess they were hoping or or take ib profen quote unquote ib profen yeah he was not very very convincing when he was like take these two pills that i'm giving you that are

[01:43:19] not in a container i'm gonna put here on this wooden table and there ib profen and she's like yeah sure they are like fucking bullshit man i don't even need my bullshit detector to know

[01:43:29] that's bullshit right i'm glad she had the sense to um to not swallow them yeah although he wasn't i at the first watch i wasn't sure what he was doing with those pills like was he trying to kill her

[01:43:42] but then i realized the second watch when they when they he mentioned the blues that they would just make her like knock her out they'll make her sleep so at least i knew that jimmy wasn't

[01:43:52] going to try to kill her yeah and he says to her i'm not gonna let anything could happen to you tonight and she's sort of is like okay well it's true yeah that's how she knows not to take the pills

[01:44:03] because he says here take this ib profen and you see her go like she doesn't twitch but her face just kind of stiffens like not ib that bullshit that wasn't what i want to use but i have learned

[01:44:14] don't confront possible murderers yeah right yeah although in this case it's totally safe to do so because he is not the murderer so good good intention wrong person um sadly but yeah and then

[01:44:28] when he says i'm not gonna hurt you do you believe me and she was like yeah i do yeah i love i love seeing charlie's bullshit detector at work it thrills me and even though i know it's there and even though

[01:44:39] people say like oh it's a superpower and it's just too easy for her to know everything i really enjoy it i think it adds so much to the show it they they use i think that the writers are so

[01:44:50] smart in the way that they use especially in this episode the way that they use her bullshit detector in the end when um when uh trey is you know charlie's on the floor and they're about to kill her

[01:45:02] and he's like come on let's take her outside or like be cleaner that way you know that whole time he's saying come on man be on my side it's me we've been friends all our life and she's like

[01:45:11] bullshit but and she just keeps calling him and every time she says that you can see it like pisses trey off because it wouldn't affect someone like that if they didn't know it was true

[01:45:21] so it it like stops him almost like um hitting him you know it's like her form of self-defense is she's like no bullshit don't listen to him don't that's that's a lie lie lie and it's

[01:45:33] weakening his him you know yeah and it gets to jimmy i mean it gets jimmy to stand up to trey unfortunately that doesn't work out for him yeah so i was thinking about this

[01:45:44] a little bit more and i think that i because i was saying that it's i think that the writing definitely could be clearer on jimmy's part as to what he is aware of and not aware of with trey

[01:45:55] because at different moments in the episode it seems like he's suspicious and then he stops being suspicious and then he goes back to suspicious like when that poster comes out um and the 75 thousand dollar reward is talked about you can see jimmy's face again suspicion

[01:46:12] look you know but it's like okay i thought you were suspicious before and that didn't go anywhere so now is it gonna go so no not really but but it's made but this is what i think it is i know that

[01:46:22] david castanietta knows what he's doing and and it's not his fault at all it's just i think the way the episode was cut maybe or the way it was written um is that it's not enough of a

[01:46:31] through line up for jimmy it's not enough of uh of uh the beats are not strung together in i mean they're they got a lot of plates to spin in the air in this episode you know

[01:46:41] there's a lot going on so i think that jimmy's character was a little bit sacrificed in the clarity department but i think that a big part of it is the way that when i'm really taking the

[01:46:52] actor's performance into consideration he he is subservient to to jimmy he he is under jimmy he looks up to jimmy and i feel like he never wants oh my god did i do it again

[01:47:10] yes thank you good lord uh jimmy looks up to trey he doesn't want to think that he's that guy he doesn't because he's this was kind of like i feel like he's got stunted they both have stunted

[01:47:22] growth syndrome yeah and i think that he sees him as the friend that he had in high school and i don't think that he's aware of how evil trey has become and so i think that he puts it

[01:47:37] he you know they say i wouldn't put it past him i think he does put it past him several times i do think that i feel like i want to say i wouldn't be that dumb in his case but you know

[01:47:49] i don't know there are people like that in my life that i always give credit to even when i probably shouldn't because of the history that we have together i think it's great acting though

[01:48:00] that's all there is to it i think that it's a solid performance i just if i were being nitpicky i would want more of the story between these two you know because it is it's so interesting

[01:48:13] the the way that they're both playing it makes you hungry for more you know yeah and i just anyway i really like daniel castan yada um like you mentioned earlier he's great on umbrella academy

[01:48:27] but the character he plays on that show is sort of brash and confident so it was so fun to see this other side of him yeah like squirrely insecure like depressed lonely guy it was like

[01:48:40] interesting yeah it took me a while to place him i was like i know that guy where do i know him from and i was like i'm not gonna look him up i'm gonna figure it out and then eventually i had

[01:48:49] to look it up because i didn't recognize him at all with the like the whole vibe he had going it was just so different he also looked a lot taller and i don't know if that's just the way dago looks

[01:49:01] in umbrella academy with next to everybody else especially that one guy who's freaking huge yeah oh god tom um can't think of the same yeah hopper yeah number one all right so i think we're on notes now right and penny you don't you don't have

[01:49:18] any more points right i know okay notes penny go for it you go through i um that you have a couple small ones i also have a second location rule um like charlie does uh it's not as relevant

[01:49:32] in my fifties as it was in my twenties and thirties but um never let a guy take you to a second location have your own transportation to get the f*** out of there but it also reminded me

[01:49:44] of jack donagy's advice on 30 rock when he was making a video for advice to his child in the future and he was like never go with a hippie to a second location and there was no more information

[01:49:59] it was just like that's the rule and i was like he's right i mean like maybe he's gonna give you weed or maybe he's gonna throw you off a mountain like it's really hard to know so

[01:50:09] don't don't go to a second location with anyone i thought that was a good rule and you know we should all try to live by it absolutely anymore um i just kind of wanted to ask the two of you

[01:50:24] what you think you would do if you were on house arrest and like stuck in your home all the time like that oh well i feel like we all know what we would do because we just went through it right

[01:50:36] over yeah yeah it's very it hits real close to home i took a lot of acting classes online and i got really really good at voiceover i just got i mean i developed a huge passion for voiceover

[01:50:49] which is now like my job so that's fun um yeah cove changed me that we did change just all i think you know i agree i think that's the same thing um i i remember i think the big thing is

[01:51:01] i became very much like i had cabin fever and so much that we moved who sells our house during covid we did a lot of people did yeah we did we um we just felt like we outgrew our house and we

[01:51:17] we we went moved a little bit north just like like maybe 10 minutes a little bit out of the city to get a little bit of green in our backyard because i think that was the biggest thing that

[01:51:28] i kind of like miss because i was like we just felt so contained in our little space that yeah yeah it's i i i'm claustrophobic um and i don't like to be in very small places and i can sense you know

[01:51:45] that's probably i don't know if he was feeling that but the monotony of just doing the same thing over and over again i think i would switch my routine a little bit i know just a little

[01:51:54] like a shift around a little bit but yeah um i mean he certainly had plenty of toys you know to keep him occupied in his very nice house but um he didn't seem to have the way that he was like to talk to

[01:52:07] i mean but i think that that's kind of by design with trey just personality wise you know i feel like people he'd talked to were probably he was paying them to be his friends kind of thing

[01:52:17] i don't know that he's ever had a real friend aside from jimmy which is probably why he just instinctually knows to call jimmy because that's the only person that i mean even he does even pay

[01:52:27] him off but for a different reason i guess but i feel like jimmy's the kind of guy who buys his friends he buys his company um you know the company being in his company so hanging out with him

[01:52:38] it's like i'm only gonna do it if it means we can go on your private jet or your yacht or your whatever you know yeah i'm not just gonna hang out with you cuz you know but it did

[01:52:48] really piss me off when he was like oh i'm six months into a 14 month sentence under house arrest i'm dying oh and it's like yeah with your gorgeous house your post made a delivery that you don't

[01:52:59] even freaking tip for your virtual reality you know world that you can go basically anywhere on your gigantic screen in your gorgeous huge house like oh shut up dude it would be a privilege to

[01:53:13] be stuck in that house you know right it's true yeah so any more notes erica uh i just want to mention that i think i have a new line that i will say instead of like oh my god i think i might say be

[01:53:32] arthur that fucking hurts for the rest of my life oh my god be arthur my god yes we're getting hilarious bullshit we're getting hilarious bullshit let's get into hilarious yes because that's the top of my list yes say bullshit if it isn't true bullshit bullshit bullshit bullshit bullshit

[01:53:58] that was so funny to me oh my god it was beautiful be arthur okay penny what's yours next one um i very much enjoyed i know i said this earlier but

[01:54:12] and i didn't go to fucking stanford i went to harvard it killed me because it mattered so much to him that he felt the need to bring it up in that moment like dude it doesn't

[01:54:24] fucking matter at all um yeah and i've just known so many people who have to drop the harvard name he was so indignant about it he had to make a point to say

[01:54:37] like how could you i know we're in the middle of covering up our murder but i went to harvard not fucking stanford um i don't know right the competition between those very very elite colleges

[01:54:50] is ridiculous like you know to be like oh stanford's not as great as harvard it's like do you even understand like how far above other people you are in this like world of elitism like you've

[01:55:04] you're at the anyway the privilege over floweth yeah just so much privilege he has no idea i loved the part where um what if they find the spot they can't find the spot that's why

[01:55:18] it's the spot but what if shut the fuck up just the way he delivered that line i i cracked up so hard joseph gordon love it was great in that moment i think he said it

[01:55:30] several times in the episode shut the fuck up just the way he said it he's so anymore um the final fight scene where charlie was you know she couldn't move because of her injury i felt

[01:55:43] like that was a reference to another movie something specific maybe and um i've never seen misery but i feel like in misery that happens and also um whatever happened to baby jane right like

[01:55:58] junk properties there's a good callback yeah i was like it's it's it's but it was reminding me of something specific and i could not place what it was do you have what's your next one erica

[01:56:09] well no i um i that was a really good callback though i i really see that um i think it's just when they were asking if more than we're burnstein was her real name it's a family name oh yeah

[01:56:21] it's it was and then the guy's like have a safe trip trip mr burnstein mr burnstein not a lot of funny moments but when they did they were like they're really good yeah right we talked about it earlier but the the uh morty misunderstanding kleptomania as

[01:56:38] something sexual like consistently whenever charlie called her a klepto she was like like don't get weird at one point she says don't get weird i'm like she really does not know that what that word means

[01:56:50] like she wasn't getting the first time she does not know i know i didn't realize that until my second watch and i'm like oh she thinks it's a sex thing she's so funny because it can't be the

[01:57:00] first time she's ever been called a klepto i mean can be right that's what she is um more like a pickpocket i guess because we don't see her take anything from like a store but well she

[01:57:09] steals the car but yeah that's true and i think she mentioned she did steal cars before yeah nothing as nice as what he is when they leave the two women alone in the motel she starts like rifling

[01:57:22] through everything to steal stuff she's like i just got a few things here first yeah she's like can you stop stealing for one minute and she turns around like oh fine because that's exactly

[01:57:32] what she's doing i thought it was funny when charlie was trying to think of clloe's name she's got a catchy name you know like jackie jazz or claudia those are like the two

[01:57:47] not even close they're even close to that it's a catchy name clloe jones same yeah right up there um charlie's trying to get her keys to escape tray and he says well i thought you were asleep

[01:58:04] and she goes yeah you also thought i was dead so i guess this is a thing i do now like comes back from the dead and it's like yep and you're gonna do it one more time

[01:58:17] oh man oh so good okay notes any more notes no i gave them all penny okay my note that i just don't it's a question i want to ask you guys is like what do you think happened

[01:58:32] with mr brawny hadi like okay because hold on so we go so we have um we see them like fishing camping working she's working with like he's clearly a forest ranger of sorts a mountain ranger you know

[01:58:49] and she's like working with him handing out brochures or pamphlets or whatever and i'm never leaving magic mountain and then bam february kind of like the shining i think that was a total reference to

[01:58:58] like those those um screen time not timestamps but you know it just says like yeah screen card like monday tuesday you know so i don't think that we ever got a time stamp month before that but it was

[01:59:14] just like bam february we're in the snow so did she change locations or just time i think it's the same mountain yeah yeah just now it's snowing in colorado and yeah what charlie's desperately trying to get

[01:59:29] enough money to get gas to denver so sea level you know so um what happened where did mr brawny hadi go why why why don't we're maybe it just ran its course maybe he's uh summer loving a few months at

[01:59:46] a time guy and then he's out um i felt very like sucker like punched in the gut like that it got knocked the wind out of me there you know because i was she was so happy and i was so happy for her i

[02:00:00] mean i was kind of happy for her i was a little more jealous than happy but i was happy for her um as happy as i could be without that being me there with her um so yeah i was just like well

[02:00:11] what happened why we're never gonna get an answer okay i guess no answer it's a mystery it was distressing this episode had me distressed he was like a like a forest nymph or something he

[02:00:22] disappeared once you know the seasons change but not to change a subject that's another shining reference was when you know the um the one line and then that that screen card but also when they

[02:00:37] panned the mountain it looked very much like the beginning of the shining when they were kind of yeah coasting it right like the way they filmed that cinematography so yeah that's i love that

[02:00:46] and then we already said we already mentioned the shining i've always been the caretaker yes that line hilarious but yeah yeah yeah yeah this this was a disturbing episode like i said

[02:01:02] i was not well after after it and just the fact that like i'm going through my notes and it's just kind of like when trey shot jimmy and then stab charlie what the fuck that's a note um

[02:01:15] if it weren't for no bullets in the gun charlie would literally be dead right now what the fuck yeah i just i wanted to punch trey in the face very hard when he was so proud of

[02:01:27] himself for making it home in time he was like that is how you fucking do it i was like okay let's get the bad guy now we're almost out of episode can we get him please get him yeah time to get

[02:01:38] the bad guy i couldn't take it anymore yeah that stab was that stab was brutal though that was really yeah but it was clever we see the second time someone slashes at someone's achilles to

[02:01:57] free themselves and in this case it's like really very helpful because i guess she slashes right through the the homing device what do you call it that thing the ankle monitor

[02:02:09] thank you homing device she's not a pigeon j jesus um yeah but it's the second time we see it because it happened in uh the second episode with the gas station yeah she sliced slash is jedd yep that

[02:02:25] guy's a yeah and what did you guys think of that moment where she had it in her hand she had the the tracking of the ankle monitor in her hand oh when we see the

[02:02:40] it when we see her breath when it goes off and yeah yeah that was i was relieved right i was like oh she's not dead because i my mind was going a million miles a minute right i was like she can't

[02:02:51] be dead she's the star of the show like what's happening right but i mean he stabbed her he must have missed her heart i guess and just got her lung i mean trey is so talentless he can't even stab

[02:03:05] someone in the freaking chest correctly yeah he sucks in so many ways my guy get it together i mean i'm glad he didn't but yeah i was i knew that charlie wasn't dead right it's charlie she

[02:03:22] can't be dead but i just couldn't figure out how she was gonna get out of that one i thought it was terribly clever yeah i know that some people some people have written and said that it that it

[02:03:31] bothered them about the episode because it was too much of a stretch but i'm like i think it's that's freaking clever i just i mean she did it once before so why not do it again right you

[02:03:40] same start monitor it's very clever yeah indeed i agree i loved it it's a little bit like arthur last week who was like well i know i'm dying but i'm not gonna let you get away with

[02:03:55] this so i don't want you to have my face to unlock the the computer so he like um yeah he just dove off the balcony mutilates yeah his own face yeah he did that yeah

[02:04:11] intense we got any more are we good to move on to news yeah i'm good i'm good all right so that is it we have successfully covered oh my goodness this crazy episode yeah whoo good lord it was this

[02:04:28] was i apologize dear listeners for the messiness of this episode but you know it was a messy episode did not lend itself to organizational thoughts so we did our best and i think we did a grand job

[02:04:41] so now in the way of news we have a couple of cool articles one the first one is from variety good old variety i think that they're both from yeah they're both from variety got a love variety

[02:04:53] this is a an interview with joseph gordon levit on playing a total dick uh and which of his almost four murders was the best so i'm gonna read a couple of little excerpts here gordon levit who

[02:05:07] says he was thrilled to learn that knives out and glass onion filmmaker ryan johnson had assigned him an ultimate total dick role i would have done anything i would have done any role says

[02:05:17] gordon levit who has done voice cameos in both of johnson's benoit blanc detective movies i don't really even know anybody that i would just do any single solitary thing with but johnson is a special

[02:05:28] person to me i was delighted to get the call from him and even more delighted when i read it and was like oh wow this is going to be a blast um and then he says whether we want to admit it or

[02:05:38] not there's a part of us that's just a totally selfish spoiled brat on the inside and then there's those of us who strive to be kind because we've learned to overcome the beast within

[02:05:49] and so this guy is just a total dick through and through it's the fun thing about acting just letting the worst part of human nature take service um and then it's it's they said it's hard for

[02:06:01] the actor to pick his favorite on-screen murder i think i would have to go with stabbing another person through the chest with a knife he says i haven't had a chance to do that before

[02:06:10] the full-on anthony perkins hitchcock moment raising the knife high above my head that uh that way we shot it to maximize the silhouette effect it's a dr calig... caligari? caligie or oh how do

[02:06:24] you say this? Caligari? Oh Dr Caligari? Yeah yeah from what? It's an old german expressionist film it's like a wacky um experimental everything's crooked black and white horror film it's good i would probably love it gotta look into it okay um it's such a classic cinematic image the

[02:06:46] stabbing i'd never done it before so it's appropriate that i ended up doing it on ryan's show and then he says natasha is a comic genius and we have very similar senses of humor and sensibilities

[02:06:57] and stefanie shoo is just fantastic in this i shot this before i had seen everything everywhere all at once and when i finally did get to see that movie i was honored to have worked with her

[02:07:06] she's such a powerful deity in that movie and here i was pummeling her in the head with a steering wheel of a lamborghini it felt very special gordon levit thinks trey probably ends up safe too i imagine there's a lot of very high priced lawyers involved he said

[02:07:22] maybe some lobbyists there could be a call to a member of the u.s house of representatives there's a lot of moving and shaking that happens afterwards afterwards and he swerves in note and

[02:07:33] he serves no time that's the world we're living in isn't it and i was like well that's depressing to which i have a question penny as the our resident lawyer does he serve time because i

[02:07:45] i that's my favorite question to ask myself in colombo is like does the murderer actually go to jail when colombo gets him there is a lot of evidence against him um his dna is everywhere

[02:07:59] right and right charlie is awake and alive so she can testify against him if she's willing to but he left a lot of evidence behind like i know he thinks he cleaned it up but he did not

[02:08:17] so that was in my notes i just realized it's the one note that i missed i found it very funny that he puts his sleeve around the cup handle to drink that and then drinks it with his bare mouth

[02:08:27] but right i'm like so okay wouldn't your dna be like all over that place because you touched so many things in there we don't see him wipe anything off and also yeah dna out of drinking

[02:08:36] like from a cup like dude he's so dumb he's really dumb he's and he it's like he doesn't even try to be smart you know it doesn't even try attempt yeah and it's just such a half-hearted

[02:08:49] attempt at getting away with this he's probably gonna try to pin everything on jimmy but that's where charlie comes in being like actually no he shot jimmy in the head point blank and it wasn't self defense like his story he's gonna try to blame it on jimmy but

[02:09:08] if there is a halfway decent prosecutor in that town um they're gonna he's gonna do jail time oh serious jail time there's no statute of limitations for murder so the cloy jones

[02:09:21] murder is is gonna put him away and then he killed jimmy and he killed morty or charlie they think loved that by the way we didn't even really talk about that but that was just

[02:09:36] it's really good writing i mean really like they had like i said a lot of balls to juggle in this episode and i think most of them were wins you know they hit a lot i mean i think that

[02:09:48] you can't win them all and if i get a little vague vagueness in some of my character's story lines it only just makes me hungrier for more show right it doesn't make me i'm not mad at it

[02:09:58] because they had so many clever like the fact that she's a pickpocket and she's got the wallet was just so clever the way that it came through in the end loved it yeah i just gotta know how did

[02:10:12] freaking cliff finder but anyway we we don't know next episode oh okay so thank you penny for that i i mean i guess joseph gordon levit is wrong i mean he ain't no lawyer there is a level of

[02:10:27] economic and political power that somebody might have that would allow them to get away with something like that but i didn't see an indication that like he had a parent who was a senator or

[02:10:38] something like that right like he's just a guy who has money all right so it depends he's apparently you know in joseph gordon levit's backstory he has connections doesn't surprise me so yeah it's weird how much i want to know more about these guys about um

[02:10:59] um characters i don't like i just i've been i want to know okay the next article is it another variety article that i think it was out last week and i think that i saw it last week but

[02:11:11] i thought oh i can't add another last week i had a lot of feedback so um it is about all of the episodes except for episode nine and ten but this is about the music so it's pokerface music

[02:11:24] supervisor breaks down season one's best songs from paul mccartney to tom waits when ryan johnson comes to television he does so with a big swing as music supervisor thomas gublich puts it uh go no

[02:11:37] gullubic i hope i'm saying that right uh the the multiple emmy and grammy nominee better call sol in six feet under is on board for johnson's pokerface gullubic picks his favorite needle

[02:11:51] drops for the from the first eight episodes below and while he can't share what songs are coming up he teases episode nine had a kendrick lemar temp song it was just too expensive so we found a way

[02:12:02] to be kendrick lemar but not be kendrick lemar this episode is a mix of dark and dreamy with a magic mountain sequence featuring a very cool song he says and the finale airing march ninth

[02:12:14] will have a couple of surprising songs and some deep cuts in between we will have a beautiful bob dylan cover in the mix so i didn't uh get a chance yet to go back after i read this to get

[02:12:25] to go back and listen really listen to the music but i think i'm going to yeah because i didn't it's like i didn't notice the music as much as as i normally do but it's probably

[02:12:38] just because i was so like gobsmacked by everything that was going on in episode nine but the music is always great so episode one dead man's hand he chose the song junior's farm by

[02:12:49] paul mccartney and wings we were trying to figure out how to close the first episode and ryan wanted june junior's farm it's not an obvious paul mccartney hit it has a great reference to junior

[02:13:01] whom we have in the casino right they call him june uh sterling frost it stitches everything together and then episode two the night shift yesterday is here by tom weights so good she meets

[02:13:13] marge hong chow who trains her on how to stay invisible it's a lot about independence but charlie also engages with people and connects with them that song is a drifter song a song about regret

[02:13:23] about the different uh about different deferred dreams of everyone in this town it really captures the sensibility and sets the tone over the opening credits and then episode three the stall just you and me by bobby chandler i love the premise of charlie casually handing

[02:13:40] one of the two brothers uh an oakja or one of the two brothers oakja i guess the film and he completely and it completely changes his life the struggle was these characters we really cared about

[02:13:52] including the local radio station dj who is black and a racist dog but we decided the closing would not be about these characters it would be about the dog it's a great way to

[02:14:01] put a footnote this was something i learned from ryan he thinks in curveballs we don't need the song to summarize the episode instead it's a way of letting the audience know we're ending this adventure and

[02:14:10] on to the next one episode four rest in metal staplehead by doxology we had to build a song that's believable as a hit staplehead we had to put others we had to put other songs that have

[02:14:23] to be noticeably not as good the song is the whole premise of the episode it's a ripoff of the benson theme we had complexities in visual vocal performances songwriting and structuring

[02:14:34] and then the clearance how many how many hoops can we possibly jump through we got john darnel who's a friend of ryan's and a fan of metal to write the songs and play the guitar player in the band

[02:14:44] he teamed up with hate breeds jayme josta who lives in that world between the two of them they were able to create catchy fun and exciting songs so yeah he john darnel wrote all of those

[02:14:54] songs in that episode episode five time of the monkey he chose hold on by gozie family the episode's editor shahid quasi and ryan filled filmed time oh filled time of the monkey with ryan's favorite

[02:15:09] obscure songs the trickiest one that i have a personal soft spot for is ngozi family hold on it's such a good song yeah i remember noting it in that episode which shows up twice in the

[02:15:19] episode and closes it out they're a band from zombia and are so charming and fun it feels random but it feels great episode six exit stage death he chose the frankly franklin medley by angela perish

[02:15:33] we had an interesting and unique situation where we had a montage that was going to be all of these famous musical numbers the whiz and cats clearing these songs is obscenely expensive and would

[02:15:43] need a grant of rights from the writers of those musicals my suggestion was to bring bring in a songwriter angela perish is an incredibly funny writer she puts together a whole series of

[02:15:54] plays and ryan loved them the one that grabbed him was frankly franklin which was a ripoff of hamilton about benjamin franklin it's a short montage of three songs and it's incredibly funny i

[02:16:06] loved it so much oh my god yeah it was your moment to die for that week episode seven the future of the sport drive it on nine by the breeders we were playing around with a lot of

[02:16:16] rockabilly music and americana for working-class racing for a working-class racing story ryan pulled the breeders driving on nine to close it out it's not a song i would have thought of it's totally different from everything else we had in the episode but it's so warm and lovely

[02:16:31] i love kim and kelly deals voices it's a cover and a beautiful deep cut breeders song i get as excited about ideas that were not mine as i do with my own it's the magic of ryan

[02:16:41] and it's a great song that feels wonderful episode eight the orpheus syndrome francis lies uh phil de sol de sole not sure how to speak french we had to connect the pieces of this vertigo

[02:16:55] hitch cocky type of story with monster score ideas some of which were from libraries and some were from an existing score it was almost impossible to capture the sensibility and timelessness of those scores but the composer is nathan johnson who is ryan's cousin

[02:17:10] and judson crane were absolutely fantastic they also integrated charlie's banjo-based theme into a thriller score which i didn't notice but now i want to go back and listen for that it was an interesting

[02:17:21] tapestry we found this absolutely wonderful song from francis lie phil de sole closing the episode that captures the different tones and feelings of the episode in a unique way yeah i thought

[02:17:33] this was really cool because i'm always interested in the music and music is one of those things that's hard to research yeah in a show on online so i thought that that was that was really cool

[02:17:43] it's really cool yeah i read the article is pretty short so i read most of it but there's um some stuff that he talks about in the beginning that i didn't get to so yeah definitely check out those links

[02:17:54] in the in the show notes if you're interested all right that's all we got so now let's move on to my favorite part of the podcast the listener feedback portion we got a couple

[02:18:08] several voice messages which makes me very happy and a couple of people wrote in so erica do you want to take that first one all right caroline writes i enjoyed this episode

[02:18:18] even if i had a few minor issues and definitely had to file a few things away in the suspension of disbelief department the deer in this episode made me cringe more than any depiction of a

[02:18:29] willing creature has since the episode of the walking dead you all know what i'm talking about and yes i do carrot yeah we do um can we that deer can we take a moment to appreciate charlie

[02:18:43] strict no second location policy her instincts may be off when confronting killers but at least she's got this down unless the man is very attractive i enjoyed watching joseph gordon levid as the bad guy and thought he did a great job as an entitled sinister douchebag i also

[02:19:02] enjoy how this show continues to subvert my expectations i figured the generic mountainy attractive shirtless man at the beginning would somehow get killed but no then when charlie and morty were stranded on the snowy road and morty got out to walk and find help i fully expected

[02:19:18] her to be hit by trey i was not expecting charlie to be hit this one definitely has nine lives and that's further confirmed by the way the episode ended the range of emotions i went

[02:19:30] through with charlie's realizing she's dead to then seeing cliff outside waiting phew i'm very excited for the finale favorite moments and quotes i have a very strict no second location policy take shirt off well we do all have to go sometime and be our third that fucking hurt

[02:19:49] and charlie's very useful stabby stick all right i'll take slash my way out with my stabby stick i'll read thank you kara uh thanks kara former guest host um yeah steve bar says despite the problems with the episode which i trust you

[02:20:10] will discuss in detail i liked that charlie was deeply personally involved in the events much like she was in the first episode that is a really good point steve i hadn't thought about that

[02:20:22] yeah yep i think that it got really personal the last episode too with the nick nulty she really cared about him you know she really cared about him like they were saying she could

[02:20:33] have stayed with there you know she found her place there you know and she kind of oh god she found her place with the mr brawny hottie too you know i mean god sad that it wasn't me but you

[02:20:48] know still it was she was happy so what happened oh just i'll never be okay i with until i know what happened and i'm not usually that person i'm so okay with not knowing you guys i i love not

[02:21:02] knowing but for some reason i really want to know in this episode i don't know what it it did something weird to me okay so lisa silver talewski is it silver yes silver uh this by far

[02:21:17] was the best episode for me oh wow i felt i was on my toes the entire time joseph gordon levit was excellent as the villain he was such a dick what i liked best was there was no uh there was no

[02:21:30] hint hint i've got a gift wink wink and you the viewers need to know my secret too in this episode perfect from beginning to end but what happened to her sexy boyfriend when when the snow

[02:21:41] came he disappeared i was sad and shocked when jimmy died not so much for morty sorry not sorry she didn't care what happened to charlie not that i uh not that i think self-serving people

[02:21:53] deserved to die but in this episode yeah she knew what uh but in this episode yeah she knew what could happen to charlie and didn't care to me she was a bad guy too well i watched the orpheus

[02:22:06] syndrome as you suggested and again hated it i did enjoy the knowledge you all knew pertaining to that episode so the second watch was a bit more interesting jade i will say i was shocked that

[02:22:18] the last two podcasts of what you didn't say we have a drinking game for every time you excitedly say acting in the first eight minutes of stage exit stage death we were drunk ha ha ha you rock

[02:22:30] we enjoy it aw thanks well i said it this time lisa i hope i hope you had got a couple of good shots in there um who's we i want to know who else is part of the we in that voice in that message

[02:22:44] yeah right right in for next week and yeah have that person right in as well um thank you so much i'm glad that you loved this episode i i too loved this episode i'm glad that it was your favorite

[02:22:54] that's that's awesome yeah yeah it's awesome i can see why i mean acting wise to say it again it was acting the acting was very good i very much enjoyed the acting

[02:23:11] uh um erica why don't you read morine's note there and it's favo it's favo by the way thank you all right morine favo says my first thought with this incredible opening was i hope

[02:23:24] steve brown does a live steving on his first watch because i can't wait to hear and compare his thoughts to mine well morine you are in luck because i have a voicemail from steve here i have not played

[02:23:38] it yet but i'm gonna go ahead and assume it's a live steve so let's all listen together hello murder magnets this is steve uh this is for the finale the season finale uh because i know

[02:23:49] i think you said there is a season two and with that cliffhanger we better have a season two this is for the last step the series season finale of uh pokerface um just finished watching it and

[02:24:01] wow so good i'm good definitely have to watch it at least once maybe twice more because it was really really good uh my moment to die for it let's see my moment to die for is just the way

[02:24:12] the show subverts your expectations like i totally expected uh that it was gonna be the other girl who was hit by the car so as soon as we when we see that charlie is the one who was uh was hit

[02:24:25] and she spends most of the episode basically laid up uh so the other girl does all the the uh investigating and stuff was great i just thought that was a really really cool

[02:24:35] way to tell the story through someone else's kind of eyes uh for a change and um gosh so many so many great things um that very first shot of joseph gordon levit looking very not joseph

[02:24:49] gordon levity i mean that's just with the beard and the long hair i don't think i've ever seen him in a role like that so i thought that was really really cool and then uh what happened

[02:25:01] to her mountain man what happened between her and her mountain man they don't tell us that we need i need to know i'm not the only one she goes from wanting to live forever on the mountain with this

[02:25:11] with this guy to working or you know loitering outside of this gas station and they don't tell us that story so hopefully we might get some backstory but i don't i can't see them you

[02:25:22] know backing up to tell us that story but it just seemed a little weird that did suddenly they're not together you know so i can't wait to hear you guys talk about it and i will talk to you later

[02:25:34] thanks steve not a live steve not a live steve subverting expectations i know see he was too bothered by the things he did not know this episode dude it does something to you it's like crack it's

[02:25:47] you can't stop but but it it's not it doesn't make you well it was he was too in golf because he couldn't live steve at the same time and watch what was happening yeah yeah yeah he was cracked out

[02:25:58] in this episode seriously all right we have a couple of voicemails from greg schwam that's my co-host over on extraordinary cast yes so this is not our fault y'all okay one mr jason kubasi

[02:26:15] messed up no i'm kidding uh jason we love you he um he had a voicemail from greg for episode seven forgot to play it on episode or no missed it i think it was sent in after we had already

[02:26:26] recorded on episode seven yeah and then he forgot about it for episode eight so here it is we have an episode seven voicemail in episode nine yes hello murder magnets and magnet teas magnet days whatever uh magnet here this is greg talking about episode seven well you would

[02:26:52] have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for that silly kid thinking he was gonna die because of seat belts oh wait he basically did get away with it he just got the yips which i mean i guess

[02:27:05] is is not great for you going into your first race i did think that uh that the the negative to this being oh gosh now i'm just nervous and i know that someone knows my secret was

[02:27:19] an interesting uh idea really enjoyed tem blake nelson he played a tortured dad you know with a legacy uh given that i have uh watched cars probably a couple hundred times and yeah days of thunder

[02:27:34] maybe a dozen and i've lived in the south so i watched nascar for periods of time i'm relatively familiar with some of the the racing aspects i was trying to figure out where charlie was gonna be

[02:27:45] um maybe a pit crew or something like that but i did find it interesting that we uh we didn't actually like we even we couldn't even have guessed right because we didn't even see the arcade or the

[02:27:59] the the go kart uh lap go cart go cart track until after the the event occurred um but uh yeah i'd really enjoyed this tem blake nelson was great and um i i'm really i this one was

[02:28:16] probably less uh first first one where someone didn't die right this is not an actual murder just an attempted one but man old boy was gonna kill the crap out of charlie all right well hey you guys

[02:28:31] doing a great job and i appreciate the podcast talk to you guys later thanks reg um and then let's see we have i totally agreed with like everything he said yeah yeah so yeah on that podcast we have another voicemail from greg that is about this episode

[02:28:53] let me just find it here um hello murder magnets this is greg uh i have to admit that uh episode nine was the most grim of all of the episodes so far uh much less colombo and more game of thrones especially with

[02:29:10] all the stabby stabbies um stabby stabby i really like this one um i like that it was a little bit more chelsea citric and like charlie was the murder person or the murdery uh murder victim um and

[02:29:25] however that's probably pate actually there's no way she should have survived that like if if uh joseph gordon levitt's character um had any kind of understanding of anything he would

[02:29:40] have made sure that she was dead before she he put her back in that hole um the first time okay i get it but the second time you make sure that they're dead um right i don't really have to see how she

[02:29:50] survives that um but then we also have cliff at the very end saying just let me know how do you do a bear the body well apparently deeper than the root of a tree um i did really uh i like

[02:30:04] that we never actually got a name um and the for um morvin more i don't know whatever the girl was that uh that kept the klepto um her their chemistry was pretty good although she was

[02:30:19] agitating and the fact that she kept lying and charlie had to keep calling her bullshit uh got a little bit irritating especially towards the end um i wouldn't figure that she wouldn't at

[02:30:32] least understand hey i am in danger because shit's going down but anyway i'm really looking forward you guys breaking stuff oh i just wanted to shout out to uh i don't remember his name but

[02:30:43] diego from a real academy as soon as i was like oh my god it's so good to see him and he was just as kind of broody as um uh as as diego was uh well you probably hear in the background but kate has

[02:30:58] stuff to say about this as well um kate can you say bye bye all right i'm gonna guess before the book yes thanks greg and kate um so cute yeah greg has two little ones and one medium one

[02:31:16] kids that was great and yeah it just reminded me like god damn trey was such a dumb ass he doesn't even check to see if the person is actually dead i mean granted he with morty

[02:31:30] didn't really matter because he pushed her car off a freaking cliff but yeah you'd think the second time the first after it not you know working out once maybe just check next time yeah no kidding

[02:31:42] i don't know why i'm trying to help it's like i'm trying to help him get away with it here but i'm just amazed at his like stupidity um all right our next one is from our friend jim

[02:31:54] pete hey y'all this is jim from roly here to talk about poker face season one episode nine escape from shitt mountain i'm just gonna talk about the characters and the amazing actors

[02:32:08] from this episode i'll let everybody else talk about the amazing twists in the plot and all of that because i could do a five minute i could do a five minute voicemail here but i do just want

[02:32:21] to talk about you know and the tasha leo and joseph gordon levit david castanieta and stefanie shoo who were just magnificent in this episode starting with natasha leon who in my opinion

[02:32:35] was not even close to the star of this episode she was great just like she always is we got those wonderful moments but she really really sort of paired back in this episode to let the other three

[02:32:48] stars shine and i think all three of them did in very different ways start with stefanie shoo who of course is offered oscar for everything everywhere all at once and deserves every bit of accolade that

[02:32:58] she's gotten and will get in her career but jeez the quirkiness of her character and how amazing she performs it she's really not a super likable character but she finds a way to get

[02:33:13] charm in there and again she had a scene with uh trey uh at the secret spot that was really fantastic and considering they're not regulars on the show and just in one episode

[02:33:25] seeing them as the only two people in that scene and just stealing the show was just fantastic david castanieta of course is in um umbrella academy great show if you haven't seen it he plays this really subdued character here which um probably doesn't get a lot of the

[02:33:43] you know play when you think back to the episode because he is so subdued and such a push over but that's not who he is in the umbrella academy and to play that kind of role is really

[02:33:52] difficult um he had a scene right after the one with trey and morty with uh charlie where she starts to unpack that he's not the worst one of the two that he sort of has been led down

[02:34:08] this path and um he can sort of see her realization of where of who those two characters actually are as she starts coming out of that fog and joseph gordon levit look he's one of my favorite

[02:34:22] favorite creators and that's really he's way more than an actor if you've ever seen mr corbin uh not a super great show but so many brilliant ideas were packed into that show where he plays

[02:34:33] i think a fourth grade teacher but if you haven't seen that it's worth a quick watch on apple tv and he's in one of my all-time favorite christmas movies called the night before just a really great performance there all right i'm gonna wrap things up there this is

[02:34:46] almost three minutes long and i just i just can't express enough how amazing the show is and i really i think that i read that this was the first episode that they filmed yeah i did that too and they

[02:34:56] ended up using it as episode nine and to see charlie as developed as she is in this episode um when it might have been the first time that she played this this character is awesome

[02:35:11] all right we're gonna end it there uh keep doing the great work everybody join patreon it's awesome and i'll see you for the last episode of season one i can't believe it i'm so sad

[02:35:24] see you guys next week peace thanks jim as always an excellent jim jim jim you have just won the award for the best voicemail ever left on podcastica podcast because that dot i just like

[02:35:39] i got so thrilled by that i want to talk with jim about actors and movies so bad right now but you just rocked my world brah like i am what this was the first episode they filmed

[02:35:52] they filmed it even before the pilot i read that um somewhere too where did you is this public knowledge who is telling you these things i saw it in an article i read on the internet today

[02:36:03] and i'm the one who does the news i know i assumed you were gonna have it so i didn't bring it out oh my god i didn't i mean oh god it just shows you how much free time i have on my hands lately because

[02:36:13] it's been a bit of a struggle but okay i love jim being like join the patreon everybody because he's a really new member of the patreon group and i think he's like oh my god where has this been

[02:36:24] all my life you know because it's really fun aww yes it is really fun to be part of that group it's it's lovely um check it out check it out so yeah i i feel very um my world has been rocked

[02:36:39] because how could this possibly be the first time that natasha leon plays charlie yeah no they filmed these in order in my mind not more or less in order i know that nothing

[02:36:50] is really done ever in very much never done in order in in film but um but how could this how could this be um it had something to do with the the weather and they wanted to film it when

[02:37:03] that it was winter and they start so it was like the first one because they wanted to make sure they had like trees with their leaves on them and stuff like that like i'm not kidding

[02:37:14] not kidding legit as soon as we're done here i am turning this episode back on and just rewatching it i have to do stuff but i can put it on in the background and

[02:37:23] just keep looking at it because i need to see this whole in a whole new light now like whole new i'm gonna watch listen for the music which i kind of didn't listen to the first time but then also

[02:37:33] i need to watch the acting on that level knowing that now like what yeah it's amazing right i'm sorry i'm it's gonna take me a minute to get this fact that just came into my reality um we do have

[02:37:46] one from paul um are you guys ready yeah paul of the beautiful voice here we go hello murder magnet tears this is paul back with another colombo connection this time for the poker face episode escape from shit mountain

[02:38:09] this is another tough one to connect to colombo if you're just starting to dip your toes into the colombo pool you you'll notice that unlike charlie colombo is rarely in physical danger

[02:38:21] he's not getting drugged or hit by cars or shot or stabbed or thrown down a hidey hole onto dead bodies twice so i had to find another connection and this one very common to colombo it's the character who decides that it's a great idea to blackmail a murderer

[02:38:44] so let's go to season one episode one of colombo the first official episode murder by the book jack casady played some of the best colombo villains he plays ken franklin one half of a mystery writing team whose creation is a miss marpley knockoff

[02:39:04] named mrs melville ken's partner jim that's martin millmer from adam 12 he is writing the last mrs melville book then is splitting from ken to go his own way problem ken enjoys the money in fame

[02:39:19] but jim does all the writing so seen as cash cow going bye bye ken kills jim as a remote cabin so he can have the last books royalties and the other books royalties all to himself

[02:39:31] but his alibi is punctured by an infatuated ken franklin superfan played by barbara colby she goes on a date with ken tells him she knows he killed jim and blackmails him for the grand total

[02:39:47] of 15 000 dollars it's such a sad amount of money i know well here's a couple fun facts you're gonna notice two big names in the credits the episode was written by steven bochko oh cool

[02:40:03] would go on to create shows like hill street blues la law nypd blue and other shows that don't have their locations in their titles and the director is a young upstart named stevens spielberg

[02:40:17] who cut his teeth and tv this episode comes out the same year as his full length tv movie dual and if you have not seen dual i highly recommend it i can't wait for the poker face finale

[02:40:30] i'm so excited uh if it's anything like shitt mountain it's gonna be super intense uh thanks for recapping everybody and uh jade when you're ready to podcast so am i see you next week

[02:40:45] thanks paul yeah i know jade you and paul are sort of starting to talk about maybe doing a colombo podcast yeah i mean i lord when when i have like some uh more free time i we have the

[02:40:58] mrs maesl podcast coming up but i was just gonna say though um paul you're officially invited to come on for the finale because i seriously need to talk to this man like about this show i and his

[02:41:11] knowledge of colombo is so great it yeah i was wondering how he was gonna connect this to uh colombo and choosing murder by the book was perfect god it's such a good episode that was amazing

[02:41:22] yeah but seriously paul yeah if you yeah this i'm about to email this man about this right now uh you gotta come on for the finale and talk with me and penny and jason about the the last

[02:42:24] bitch just talked with us i don't ask for much guys i have very few needs but one of them is i need validation and compliments and likes and reviews but i also need your feedbacks it's like
