SPEAKER_00

You're gonna think about it.

SPEAKER_03

Hey everyone, welcome to the show. I'm Daphne.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm Pake.

SPEAKER_03

And this is the Run for Your Lives Podcast.

SPEAKER_00

This episode, we are continuing the Insidious franchise. It's been a little bit with the supernatural horror film Insidious The Last Key, directed by Adam Robotell and released January 5th, 2018. This is um uh ostensibly Insidious 4, because we've done the first three, so yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, it is the fourth movie in the franchise, but it's actually chronologically timeline-wise. It's the first one. It's kind of like the first, like the first purge was like the fourth movie or fifth movie, and then it became the first movie because it it's a prequel.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Which is, I mean, really the only way we get to see the amazing Lynn Shea because her character of Elise was killed off. So I'm okay with a prequel.

SPEAKER_00

There's stuff from the fur from before, but actually I think it would be second, because they tea they keep referencing this is after the events of Insidious Three. They've she references uh Quinn.

SPEAKER_03

That's right. So you know what? You are right. It is the second film. That's that isn't what uh the online search said. So they're wrong.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because Specs and Tucker that she meets them in starts working with them in Insidious Three.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

So this is after that. This is between three and one. I mean, it you just have to yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's always fun when they do movies out of order like this because then you have to do the math in your head and figure all the shit out, and sometimes you could be wrong, like I was. Oops, okay. My bad, I'll own it. No, no worries.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's so full circle finished closes the loop to the first movie, which if you know if you've if you've seen them all you following. Don't it sounds confusing, but it's you can get it. Uh so it's like it's a perfect loop and it's closed uh until they decided to do Red Door, which finished everything except for the new movie that comes out in a couple of months. Um and then the other spin-off one that they're working on that will come out in the next couple of years.

SPEAKER_03

But you know, besides that, it's a franchise thing. We are familiar with franchises. The funny thing is, we saw Red Door in the theater two years ago, and we still haven't even gotten to cover it on the podcast yet.

SPEAKER_00

No. It's next now. Yes, yes, we're getting there.

SPEAKER_03

The question is, will it be this season or next season? I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. We'll see. You know what? Because I we I think I talked about this when we covered Insidious III, and then I talked about it when we covered The Conjuring. And every time we because even though they're separate universes, they're James Wan, and there's you know, there's they've they're similar in style haunting movies. Um but every time we watch one of them, it makes me just want to go like, I want to go through all of them, which we're close on Insidious, but like we still haven't done anything conjuring universe other than the first movie, because we've got you know Conjuring 2 and then Last Rights and then Devil Made Me. And then also the Annabelle, like three Annabelle movies and two nun movies. And then technically, even like um there's uh there's a where not uh the wolves at the gate or something, wolves at the gate, I think, and uh Curse of La Gorona are in that universe, even though they're like so it's like there's so many movies we can still do, and every time we watch these, so like while I'm watching this and taking notes, even though it's not even in the Conjuring Universe, I was like, oh yeah, it makes me be like, I want to watch all those movies and I want to talk about them and we need to do it.

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

You know what? I think now that we've done this one, we should just do red door next week. Back to back. We've never done that really. I don't think that's it. Let's let's do it. Let's let's let's do that. I feel like this season so far we have done things that I thought we would never do. Movies that we would never cover I we're covering. So why not? I feel like uh it would be it would be super fun to go back to back because we're already in this universe in our heads.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Although we're not really gonna record again for two weeks. So I mean, by then, who knows? Uh but I re-watched, or rather, I watched a a recap video of the first three movies before I watched this one, because I wanted to get my head in the space of the demons and the witches and all of that. I wanted to be in that world. I didn't trust myself to remember everything. Because we've said before, we covered the movie and then it's gone because I have to think about the next one, and that's how my brain works. So I can't remember things. Probably I think you do a better job remembering every little detail more than I do.

SPEAKER_00

Sometimes it depends.

SPEAKER_03

If it's a really bad one, I remember more of it if it's bad. Usually because we rip it to shreds and yeah, we have a lot of fun with it. Like the happening.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so let's go ahead and kick this off with some production notes. It was filmed in Santa Clarita, California, even though the movie technically takes place in New Mexico. Adam Robotell has directed four films. All of them are within the horror realm. He did The Taking of Deborah Logan, which I have seen. I didn't love it. But he also did the two movies that are part of this escape room franchise that I actually did enjoy. So we can probably cover those at some point. Was written by the amazing and fun Lee Wan L and produced by Jason Bloom, Orrin Peely, James Wan, and Lee Wan L. We already mentioned the fourth film in the Insidious franchise. Music is by Joseph Bashara, who also reprised his role of our favorite lipstick face demon. Budget was 10 million. It grossed 167.9 million at the box office, was 103 minutes long. Pate, give us a synopsis.

SPEAKER_00

Alright. Parapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier faces her most fearsome and personal haunting yet, as she is drawn back to her ghostly childhood home where the terror began.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yes. Yes, she was. I only watched this movie one time prior to today. I forgot how truly horrible her father was to her. And on the flip side of that, her mom was this loving and supportive person in her life. And I remember the first time that I did watch it thinking she her mom's not gonna live that long. Because I feel like Elise is a tortured soul. And if she had had that much love and support in her whole life, I don't believe she would have been so haunted.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yeah, it's I was trying to like remember certain things that were gonna happen. Because I like you, I've only seen this one once before, and it's been a while. So I was like, oh, what would what's coming? And then it's like, oh yeah, yeah, that, and then that, and then uh-huh, okay, yeah. Um the title, I'm still I was like, where are the instead of just Insidious 4 that they then decide to give it a like subtitle and do something different with the last key, which sounds great, and then I but you can't really look because I'm like, what does that mean? What last key there was? I was like, I don't actually know what that means.

SPEAKER_03

There's not actually like there's I mean the red door, which is the next movie, makes sense.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, it's been a very big like through line, but it was like last key. I was like, yes, keys play a big part. There's the keys to the red door and the key face demon and and key hand. Yeah, we get the the keys visually, but like last key, what does that mean? Because they're not trying to get any kind of keys. Keys are it's like We're not collecting it just sounds good, it sounds poetic, it sounds creepy, but and it doesn't hold up. That's uh I don't have a lot of complaints, so I'm not gonna tear this movie apart, but that is like one where I'm like, I don't understand the title. It's a small thing, but I'm like, okay. I guess they just wanted to be a little more creative instead of just going Insidious 4. Moving on.

SPEAKER_03

Well, you know what? It's not locking key. They're not running around trying to to find keys to do different things. Keys play a part in it, absolutely, but yeah, I don't know what the last key. I mean, I don't know. What would would you just rather they call it Insidious 4?

SPEAKER_00

I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I don't know. I feel like they could have named it something different, but I'm not gonna spend a lot of time in Lee Wan L's head if he's the one that named it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

It's always fun to get back into a franchise when you have characters that you really like. Like Elise and Specs and Tucker are old friends that we're reconnecting with in this movie, and it's always fun to come back through and visit them again. Um we did get somewhat a cool key face demon played by Javier Botet, who Spanish creature actor, who we have seen before in our Run for Your Lives universe, because he played Mama in Mama. He played the hobo in the movie It and we haven't covered it yet, but in The Conjuring 2, the Crooked Man.

SPEAKER_00

Nice.

SPEAKER_03

So we've seen him before. It was fun to get back to this. It was great to get a look into Elise's past, how sad and horrifying it was because her dad is was just a terrible man.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Which is interesting. Again, you know, name drop with one of those like, you know, humble brag moments. But Josh Stewart, who plays her father, uh Gerald Rainer in this movie, I've met and hung out with him, and he's a super cool dude. He's an incredibly awesome guy. And so I'm like, oh yeah, he's Josh Stewart. I was like, I know him, he's so cool. And then to watch the character be like, oh yeah, I forgot his character is horrendous. It's like, well, don't think Josh isn't like that.

unknown

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, it's awful. You really get the contrast too, like in the first five minutes with the way that Audrey, Christian, and Elise's mom is with Elise versus how the dad is, which is he doesn't believe in any of the spirit stuff. He doesn't want it talked about, it it doesn't exist to him. And if he finds out you're doing it or catches you or whatever, he's gonna punish you and it's just gonna be horrible. He he was beating her, there were marks on the wall from it where she would have her hands. Um to the point where she just runs away when she gets older because she can't take it anymore.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Uh it's it's interesting because it sets up the the idea of the paranormal and you know, psychic abilities that Elise has that it's genetic because it's a small little line that's easy to miss, but when she's talking to her mom and she mentions something about like, oh, like your dad. And so we learn that her father also can see ghosts and has these like susceptibility to it as well, and has some ability. And so, not to make any excuse for him at all, but it's kind of it's like he's trying to beat the paranormal connection out of her and like make her like convince herself that she can't see or hear these things, and I think it's not so much anger towards it as it's fear of her not like he doesn't want her to experience some of the things that he has, maybe. But that's not the right way to go about it. There's no excuse for that. Like, you're not you know, I'm not making an excuse for him, but I think like if I could dig into that character of him, like subconsciously, I think the root of it is a fear, and she even says that is like or uh the when she's talking to the little girl version of herself when she's in that trance and she says, like, oh, he's just scared. And so that's but again, not the best way to go about it, you know, locking her in the basement overnight, because that's definitely gonna help with the ghost thing for sure. But yeah, but you see just he's already a not a good person, and so key face feeds off of that. That's where we get with with Ted later, and and everything is like we see it's the same kind of he it takes a certain kind of person that it that he can like feed off of, and we especially the line, it's like a small line, but it makes me go, oh yikes, when you know the mother is begging for just stop, don't do this, don't do this. Don't tell me how to punish her. I punish people for a living, so it's like yeah, he's he has this power complex and not a good person at the root, anyway.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the anger. Even if it started out coming from a place of wanting to protect his daughter by having her suppress these abilities over time, it's just become a way for him to lash out and punish her, probably for his own emotions and what he's dealing with with it. And we find out too, I mean, it's passed down through generation because Elise has it, but then so does her niece. And so it's it's an ongoing thing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Uh what a place to grow up for a kid with these paranormal abilities or gifts on this, you know, on site at a prison with like a death row where people are are being put, you know, to death in the chair, and so these death row inmates, after they're killed, like there's this connection immediately to this young girl who's like knows about their lives and their deaths and what they had for their last meal. Yeah. And so that's so many ghosts and so many things that are gonna be around in this area anyway. Plus others, I mean, there's also the the little boy ghost that is like in their room that pulls out the toys and uh, you know, speaks to him. Which there's a lot of things in this movie, and I'll point them out as we come across them, that are like and I I don't want to say tropes, but I couldn't find another word to use, so it's not in a bad way, which uh tropes don't have to be negative.

SPEAKER_03

No, they don't.

SPEAKER_00

Um, but the insidious franchise itself has developed its own tropes that you see through the insidious movies. Um and so of course they have to include the scene of the little ghost boy. You don't see much of him, but you know, it she's talking to her brother who's above her, except it's not him, and it's this little ghost, you know, voice. And then when she realizes it's not Christian, and then she gets out, and it's the whole him running by and laughing in the background, and then hiding in the closet, and then you know, appearing behind Christian in the bed. And it's these little things, it's like it's so insidious, they have their own style, yeah. The way that they do those, like the ghost kids, and it's like it reminds you of the first movie so much with like the little boy that's running around, kind of just causing you know chaos and mental anguish for her too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. The laughing, like that sound, um that playful sound, it's not malicious, it's just a kid ghost running around playing, moving the toys and everything. And you know, the mom, Audrey, is not phased by it as much. I think she just tries to keep the secret that this is happening maybe more than the father knows that it's happening, like the toys getting moved around and everything, because she doesn't want more altercation, she doesn't want him to abuse her anymore. And it's just really hard because as soon as he catches wind of it, it's over. He's on it, he's punishing. He just wants her to lie to him and say, No, I didn't see any ghosts. She's a little girl who tells her father the truth, much to her own detriment, because you know, you can see the tears in her eyes. She's crying when he asks her the first time, and he just tells her to say no, and she says yes again. And he looks at that, I think, as not the way she intends it, where I'm your daughter, I'm telling you the truth, more of you're taunting me by not giving me the answer I want, so now I'm gonna punish you for it. You're making me punish you when you're not giving me what I wanted, which is nothing to do with spirits in this house. I'm like, then don't live near a place where people are put to death where the death row people are dying and then hanging out around. Like she doesn't want that memory. She didn't ask for this, and that's something she says to him later. I didn't ask for this, and he just snaps right back at her, saying that she did. Like acting like it's something she chose when it isn't, it's something he passed on to her.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And I think some of that is his anger at himself or something he couldn't control.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. Yeah, and so like the last bit of this opening, of course, is kind of it's it's cool that the movie starts with a like flashback that we then see as her having a dream or really a memory that these things come back and at certain points. But yeah, as we're meeting key face, uh which is the first time that Elise has any uh interaction with the further, or through like the red door, and um is it this this demon here being able to like prey on her abilities but also her innocence using this like little child voice, and you know, open the door, you're the only one who can, and because it she you know, and then we even see later that like her abilities are strong enough that the key face wanted her, telling her as a kid, like you're the one that's gonna do this, and then even then when she's talking to herself, which is another trope is insidious time fuckery. They like to do that. Uh play around with time time loops and like something that happens in one movie affecting what happens and something that happens in the future in the timeline, or even in the past.

SPEAKER_03

There's a you know there's a scene later on that plays into what's coming.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But it makes me think of Insidious 2, where uh uh Josh, when Josh when Josh sees himself as a kid and like alters things, and at least you know, in that second one, like there's that, you know, kind of like I said, time fuckery when it comes to the further.

SPEAKER_03

It's hard to get like a clear timeline when they keep showing you in every movie there'll be something that's like banging on a door or um something else like that that connects to the other movies. And so you're like, oh wait, I didn't oh yeah, that did happen. Which is why I ended up I watched a recap of the first three movies because I'm like I know this is a movie that is gonna refer back to that, and I kind of want to have a good idea going in.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um because time was not available for me to re-watch the first three movies.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_03

So this is that's what I did to catch myself up.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so this, yeah, key faces kind of preyed on that innocence, but then also the ability that she can use you know, open the door and let it free. And what's the first thing it does when freed is kills her mom. So that's gonna be something that she has to deal with and is traumatized with for the rest of her life.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because she blames herself because she's the one that let it in, but she was a child. She didn't know any better.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

There was nothing she could have done differently. She certainly couldn't go up and say, Daddy, there's a ghost that wants me to open the door. Should I do it? Because her dad He doesn't want any part of that. Like, that doesn't exist.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um, and so yeah, she wakes up from this memory, is what this whole opening thing is. And then we even see it's 2010, which we know is the same year as the events of the first movie. Um and then yeah, by the end of this movie, I mean this movie ends with her getting the call from Dalton's grandmother, Josh's mom, you know, that we see in the first movie, so it all flows right into it.

SPEAKER_03

There's so much that we didn't know until the Red Door. Like there are things that we learn in the Red Door, and so going back and watching this one again, it's just like, oh god.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So yeah, I'm excited to get it, because I don't remember a lot of the Red Door. Because again, we saw it in theaters, and then that's really all that I all that I've given it. So uh, you know, I I don't remember a lot. So Yeah. I do know, yeah, there's again those kind of time fuckery things, and there's it it definitely does that with some stuff, but uh yeah, we'll we'll we'll talk about that. So I'm glad we're gonna just like jump into that as the next one.

SPEAKER_03

So we can I feel like, yeah, we have to. I might re-watch it tomorrow just because I f wanna be back in that headspace after seeing this one.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah. So yeah, we're we're kind of in current time in a way. It's 2010, but you know, in this timeline in this movie, we're back to there. And our our boys, Tucker and Specs, they're there. They're living with Elise, so Spectral Sightings is just a fully in-house operation, I guess.

SPEAKER_03

And you know, Tucker tries to fix things. He's trying to do things, but it's just not working. It just makes me think of I don't know, the dad in Gremlins who had all these inventions and nothing ever worked. So he's trying to fix stuff, and they're living. I mean, this is this is before we get to go to the Lamberts and meet Dalton and Josh and the whole family. So they're just they're just living. Like it's just how things are.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's where like I said, we are this is after the events of of Quinn Brenner?

SPEAKER_03

Quinn Quinn Bremmer.

SPEAKER_00

Bremer. That's it. It's it's in there somewhere. My brain is like, I remember some things. I didn't re-well, I didn't watch any kind of recap, so I'm just pulling from somewhere deep in there.

SPEAKER_03

Uh okay, let me look. Yeah, Quinn Brenner.

SPEAKER_00

Man.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

It's buried in there somewhere. I don't know how, but something sticks.

SPEAKER_03

Remember, we've done over 200. I mean, yeah. This is episode 260. We have done. And then Dr.

SPEAKER_00

Malcolm cut they're just mixing them all up. No, uh. Yeah, so this is after that, so they're, you know, fully a team doing things as they do. They're ghost busting. Uh when, yeah, Elise gets a call from uh Ted Garza, who is in Five Keys, New Mexico, where she grew up, all that happened, and not just in the same town, but he is living in the exact same house that she grew up in. And she's been having these dreams and memories of it recently. Uh, so she's terrified too. At first, she just refuses. She's like, sorry, I can't help you, goodbye. But then she's thinking more about key face and having these memories of and she again feels guilty, like you said, or responsible for what happened, and she knows the evil that's in that house and what this guy could be up against, and so sh just she has to take that responsibility for herself. She says she has to do it. And at first she wants to do it alone, she's not gonna want the guys tagging along, but Tucker and Specs don't take no for an answer.

SPEAKER_03

They definitely do not. I wondered if she did that because she was afraid for their safety because of what happened.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think so. I think she just knew the dire situation that could be ahead of them and didn't want to put them in that kind of danger.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because she makes a comment later that we'll talk about it was at the very end about family.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

And that kind of solidified that in my head that she really did not want the same thing that happened to her mother to happen to them.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And so she was trying to keep them safe. But she's also, I think, really happy when they decide that they're coming. Basically, they bought a van.

SPEAKER_00

$700 for an RV is insane, a steal. How? How did they do that? Uh I love the license plate. Did you catch the license plate?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, Spex Tucker.

SPEAKER_00

Spex Tucker.

SPEAKER_03

I love it.

SPEAKER_00

Again, to see that is fun. It's like how because it because I know we've seen it, but like that they were like, we just bought this, and it was like, and you already got the the vanity plate, but I was like, you guys worked quick, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Yep, and the painted logo, like everything is all set so it looks good.

SPEAKER_00

Just as like, you see, like they already have that that license plate on there. It's like, man, they they committed really right away.

SPEAKER_03

It ran better than I thought it was going to, and I figured maybe it was stolen. Not that they stole it, but someone else stole it and then unloaded it for if you're just paying $700 for it, then that's the only explanation that it's working.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Because I thought it might break down on the way there and it didn't, and so I was surprised that it was functioning at all for that price.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Uh, and road trip. Uh and when they get there, you know, the I get I think I've done this a bunch. I I like to pay attention to road signs in movies for some reason. I really do. So you welcome to five keys will unlock your heart, which doesn't sound welcoming. That sounds like a threat.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. It does. And especially when you see later the way the the the uh key face is like sh putting a key in and turning it, and it makes it so they can't even speak, and then yeah, no, I don't want that. Thank you very much. It doesn't sound very welcoming. Um it made me think a little bit of the Bay, uh Widows Bay, of Widows Bay, the TV series, just because it's like this small community, even though Widows Bay is like in New England and whatever. Just it's sinister. No, we're covering Insidious, not Sinister. Um but it's also kind of like it's a small community, and you know that they don't get a lot of visitors, probably, so they need every tourist dollar they can get. So they're trying to be clever. It's not clever.

SPEAKER_00

No. They'll never be the next Martha's Vineyard.

SPEAKER_03

Nope. They won't. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so they meet Ted Garza at the house as the man that bought the house and called Elise, uh, played by Kirk Acevedo, who everybody will recognize him in some capacity. He's a very seasoned TV actor. If you watch TV shows, you've seen him in things. Oh my god. Uh Agents of Shield, uh The Walking Dead, uh Arrow, and that's just name, but then all kinds of even like either like law and cop procedurals that I don't watch that he's been in a billion times, and yeah, he's a mainstay on television shows, right?

SPEAKER_03

He will always be Miguel Alvarez from Oz, which is a great series that you should put on your list of shows that you're not gonna get around to because it just continues to grow. That show, like The Wire, it was an early HBO series, and it was gritty, and the things that they did in it because it it's about a prison called Oswald Penitentiary, but they treat it like it's the Wizard of Oz, like they call it Oz, and I can't remember what the name of Oh, Emerald City, I think, is where they called this special area, and he played one of the convicts, and he was very complicated. He did some not good things. So, yeah, that's where I remember him from. But he does pop up in so many different things. He was in Band of Brothers, yeah. He's just he's been in tons of stuff.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's one of those you see his face, and you're like, Oh yeah, I've seen this guy in a billion things. Like, I know who that is. I've seen yeah. One of those, I you know, there's the that guy, uh, you know, is kind of the term. But what I end up doing is when those people pop up in shows, I go, ooh, like just involuntarily. I'm like, hey.

unknown

Hey.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

It's like seeing an old friend. I'm like, oh, I've seen you, I know you we've met before. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. Or I think, okay, I know I've seen you, and where did I see you? Like it doesn't always click exactly where I saw the person before, but then over time it starts to percolate, and of course I stop kind of paying attention to the show I'm watching because my head is moving and trying, you know, my brain's working, trying to figure out, okay, where did I see him? And then I finally give up and go look at like Wikipedia because I can't take it anymore. I get too distracted by it, so I give up.

SPEAKER_00

I just finished watching The Pit, and The Pit has a lot of those where it's like random, like one-off like people who are patients at the hospital or like our doctors in different departments that just swing by for like a little cameo or something to be like to get something from the ER, and then they leave and you never see them again. Uh Raphael Chestang from Dropout.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

It was like a pediatric doctor, and it's just like, what?

SPEAKER_03

You never know who's gonna show up. And I feel like that show because it has a lot of critical acclaim, it has a lot of fan love. I feel like a lot of people want to be on it and are reaching out to them and saying, Hey, I'd love to have a cameo, I'd love to be part of this project because it's gotten so much attention and love from everyone. So Skinny Pete was on it, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I was gonna say Charles Charles Baker had like a great little arc as a patient, uh, which our our our friends over at What's On Tonight interviewed him on one of their episodes for that. So just throwing that out there, people check that out. Uh Samantha Sloyan has a really great arc in the first season that is incredible. Yeah, it's oh it's so good.

SPEAKER_03

I have to watch that. I have not been able to.

SPEAKER_00

But back to Insidious. Uh yeah, so we're we're checking out the house, seeing what, you know, Ted has had all these ghosts that are bothering him. Um says there's one main room where a lot of the ghost activity has happened, so he locked it and blocked it off with a bunch of Bibles. It's a strategy. Uh, and of course that would be Elise's old bedroom that she shared with her brother, Christian.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he hadn't changed much about the house either. She was a bit surprised when she came in and noticed that it the wallpaper is pretty much the same.

SPEAKER_00

The furniture's all like in the same places.

SPEAKER_03

It's like he didn't do anything. He moved in and didn't change anything. He thought it was all perfectly good. She sees her handprints on the wall from where, you know, her dad made her put her hands on the wall. And I mean, what a traumatic thing for Elise to have to do. I mean, not only to go back to try to help him with this ghost issue, but to go back and face things that she may not have really been face to face with since she left. I mean, yes, she the whole spirit thing is kind of ingrained in her, but this is the site of so much of the pain and the trauma of her childhood that she hadn't been in that environment again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um so yeah, she's going to kind of explore what she can compose herself. Uh Tucker and Specs, of course, go back out to the Winni Bay Ghost, which I love. Um and yeah, she's just kind of searching around, and you get great stuff. She does find her brother's whistle. Uh, and I was trying there's there's we don't really know why it was there. My two theories is either it was put there by Anna, having a feeling that she would find it there because she knows at least the way that she listens and hears she would she'd pick up on that. That, or it's the little boy ghost that lived in the bedroom who was not a fan of that whistle and was annoyed by it, and so he took it from Christian and hid it there. It's one of those.

SPEAKER_03

Very well, I mean, honestly, that could have been what happened.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

So those are my two theories on that. Uh, not that it really matters, but I was just like, yeah, I'm going with the headcanon. It's it's one of those.

SPEAKER_03

Did you love Tucker's she's psychic, we're sidekick?

SPEAKER_00

That's what he was saying. Okay. Because I didn't have uh captions on. I just kept saying, She's psychic and we're psychic, and I was like, I don't know what you're trying to get at. Sidekick. That makes more sense. But the fact that even I misunderstood it, and I think everybody else he said it to also didn't hear it that way. We're like, okay.

SPEAKER_03

At first I thought he said it different every time, but he didn't. It was were a sidekick because I had the captions on. I'm like, okay. Alright. Um, it makes sense, kind of. I mean, it's honestly, it's Tucker trying to be funny, and he's bless him. He was not born with the charisma gene.

SPEAKER_00

No. Him and Specs are yeah. Because you think Tucker has no game, and then you watch Specs with Imogen, and you're like, oh god, it's even worse. How is it even worse?

SPEAKER_03

But in some ways, because Specs is not as intrusive. Okay, so because Tucker is he comes on way too strong, okay? Specs doesn't come on quite as strong, but he comes off like ten times more awkward.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And so it it drives Tucker crazy that Specs is given the opportunity to get to go with Imogen, and he doesn't get to do that because he has to go to the basement later on. He d he doesn't like it. He sees Specs and Imogen having this little friendship going, and he he's not happy because he he wants he wants to get in on the action, but he has no game.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_03

No game at all.

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah, and I love creepy ghost stuff. Uh again, we get some of that while she's kind of searching around. The the dark figure creeping up on her that turns into the her dad's old uniform with the flashlight was fantastic. So well done. Love it. One of the things I love about these movies so much.

SPEAKER_03

They do that though. They set you up to think that something is gonna pop up and it doesn't, and then it pops up when you don't expect it to, like the suitcases. They keep showing you on purpose to lull you.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah set up for the suitcase. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

They lull you into this sense of comfort and then smash you in the face with a suitcase. So it's just what they do. And so I'm sitting there bracing for whatever because I know it's coming, but then it's like, yep, I know it's coming. I'm not gonna cut I know it's gonna happen, but watching Elise, I mean she's doing what anyone would do, but still Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh and then yeah, she's got this camera feed through, you know, like what she her, you know, kind of on the glasses kind of thing, and that they can watch. And uh you know, the legs at first, and then the full ghost of of Anna um asking for help. But again, the Elise doesn't see it, it's just like through the camera feed, which is interesting. So and then she takes the whistle from Elise, so then maybe can wise I go back, so maybe it was just the little boy that hit it because I don't know why she would hide it for Elise to find just to take it back, then just take it and lure the sound in the first place. So going back to it's the little boy ghost with the mask that was in the room, he was just like this stupid fucking whistle, I hate it. I'm taking it away from him, and I'm hiding it under here, and he can't blow it again.

SPEAKER_03

Um they keep blowing it, so it's like, yeah. He had to get it and hide it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then once she kind of starts interacting with this ghost, uh, Anna, before she knows the name, whatever, but she recognizes her. This is later, but we kind of get that like flashback, though, is like the woman she she sees, she recognizes her thinking that she was a ghost she had seen in the house before. That's like the big reveal for later, but yeah, she's just like, oh yeah, because I saw her in the laundry room, this kind of same place as I'm seeing her now. It's like, oh yeah, she was in here, and Dad was mad at my ability of being able to see her, and but that was the last straw. So that's like why this ghost really sticks out to her, because that was like a last straw for her, where finally she said no more, showed her dad his own death, and then walked out.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It was just so done with his abuse and was out. Unfortunately, that meant leaving her little brother alone with their father, uh, which she's kind of beat herself up. Another, you know, just add it to the pile, add it to the list of things she has to feel guilty about. But for her own, not just mental health, but literal physical safety, she had to get out of there.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I think she carries a lot of guilt for many different reasons, and that, again, is something that she's just had to deal with. She's never given herself any grace about it. She's just continued to live a life where she feels like she made so many mistakes. And coming to the realization that Anna was still alive gives her even more to pile on with the guilt because she realizes I could have helped her because she wanted to help people. That was why she does what she does. I mean, she that's why she does everything that she does is to help people. She wants to make things better. And she realizes then, oh my god, I could have helped her, and I instead I left. Why wouldn't you think it was a ghost? Her dad said he didn't see anything, even though he knew that Anna was in there.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean it's something that she can't blame herself for because where she was at at the time, like, why would you, like you said, why would you expect anything different?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then it's interesting that even though, you know, all these years have gone by, her brother still lives in that town. He never, like, left, but just seems to on his own, like, he seems to be doing fine. Um still lives there. Uh, she sees him and his two daughters at the diner. Um, and that doesn't go so well. He's definitely harboring some hard feelings about all of you know her leaving him behind, and even before that, he says, you know, you terrified me as a kid, all of this, you talking about ghosts and demons and all these things. It is just like I didn't want to hear any of that, and you just constantly that's all it's just like you terrified. Me and then you left me alone.

SPEAKER_03

With a monster. I mean, we don't know exactly what Gerald did to him. But we do know because we see the scars on Elise. We s we see the physical remnants of the abuse that she suffered.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So and as far as I know, or as far as we know, I don't think he had any abil he didn't really have any abilities. I don't think. But his daughter does.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Which I wondered if Elise realized that Imogen had an ability, like when she first is meeting them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I don't know. Maybe because what what causes her to s you know start talking to them other than they're familiar you know, they're familial s literally, you know, they are related, so they've kind of but I don't know, because I feel like I wouldn't be able to look at somebody and feel like, oh, you're related to me. Like I I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

No, I don't think so. I I don't I don't know. I don't I feel like you'd have to have some sort of sixth sense of susceptibility to understand that, and I Yeah, I don't think so.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But yeah, as much as Christian was not happy to see her, uh his daughters, Melissa and Imogen, are quite happy to meet their Aunt Elise that they didn't know existed until right now.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. They were so happy to meet her, and Elise gives them this picture of the whistle to give to their dad.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, then we kind of get to the next night there, you know, Elise continuing her, you know, exploring and trying to figure out okay, how do we take care of these, like the ghosts, and how do we help Ted out? Uh she's talking about the red door, which yeah, we we we know again, it's it's big to this, you know, franchise, this story, uh, the passageway into the deeper, yes, further, uh, where the malevolent, insidious even uh spirits reside. Things like key face here, or the lipstick face demon, Parker Crane, the man who can't breathe, and more. A lot of uh red door residents that we have met over the years.

SPEAKER_03

The usual suspects.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

We're hanging out together.

SPEAKER_00

And and Anna, this ghost woman here, using the whistle to lead her to a door, wanting her to see something. It's kind of this sort of hidden door down in the basement, and yeah, what she sees is not a ghost. And then you realize when she's saying help that help her, not help me. Because there is a living woman trapped and shackled up in the basement, so the ghost leads Elise to find her and rescue her.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Because Garza had kept someone prisoner, much like her father had in that room.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So the line where Ted says, you know, he's in my head, which thicks with Elise, it's very important. Oh, he's wanting to get rid of ghosts, but he's the one creating them. Um But again, I think it's it's key face. It's key face's doing of kind of locking into his head and preying on this darkness that's already there, much like we learned her father was the same situation and influencing him into abducting and and killing these women.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Luckily, when he comes in brandishing a gun, Specs is able to, because he's out in the van, able to see what's going on, so he can be backup because otherwise they were locked in that room.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And yeah, we know Specs is fine. We know he's gonna be fine because he's in the first movie.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. Well, physically he's fine.

SPEAKER_00

Mentally, he might need a little time. He did just crush a dude with a bookcase. He did maybe.

SPEAKER_03

I don't believe that was his intention. I think he, you know, was trying to stop him. Not I don't think he wanted to kill him. It's just what ended up happening.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And and you know what? Gars is he he was in his head. He's not in his head anymore.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's gone.

SPEAKER_00

Nothing is.

SPEAKER_03

Nothing's in his head anymore.

SPEAKER_00

So his head is gone. The killer is dead, the woman is saved, mission accomplished, movie over.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, no. That's not how this works.

SPEAKER_00

Still 45 minutes left. So what could happen now? What else could go wrong?

SPEAKER_01

More to tie everything in.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, um, we think it's over, but then at least gets this like vision of her niece dead, um, knows something is obviously really wrong and races back to the house where yeah, uh, the whistle has led Christian back to the house with the girls, and old keyface has been lying in wait for some new playthings.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. This is where we really get to see him locking in with like the the keyhole he creates in her throat to stop her from being able to scream. And then he does another one further down that basically puts her in the hospital.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, just it's just like locking the throat to silence them, and then the chest one is like, just and then I'm gonna turn you off.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. Powering down. We're we're just gonna shut you down.

SPEAKER_00

But Imogen then reveals, at least to the viewers, if Elise had didn't already know, which you asked, you know, maybe she did, that she also has these gifts that is genetic, so she wants to stay and and help save her sister, deal with this evil entity, whatever she can do. Which it's good that she was there, because uh Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

They needed her. Because Elise is still vulnerable to certain things in the further, like she's still very vulnerable. It's why she doesn't really go in there because she's too um susceptible to things, especially the Black Witch and all of that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the the entities that are there feel her presence and they really don't like her because No Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

They would love the opportunity to take her out. Not on a date either.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_03

Or to a ball game.

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah, I like yeah, realizing kind of stuff about Anna, Tucker reaching through the fan blades to retrieve the clothing, uh, which nothing happens, but the tension is there, and like you know something good. It's just those like little things you're like, oh, okay. But I like that they play with that again, where you're like, well, there's a lot of ghosts in this house and demons that could do something if they wanted to. They have the ability to turn a fan on. Like, why wouldn't they?

SPEAKER_03

That scene plus the one where Garza is kind of hunting for specs, the tension in both of those scenes, even though I knew Specs was gonna be okay, the tension had me right in my throat. I was just like, let's get through this, let's let's get on to the next part, because I don't want anything to happen to them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And then, as we mentioned, that's where Elise realizes that Anna, the first time she saw that ghost, was not a ghost, but an actual living person trying to escape the the little prison room down in the basement that her father had put her in.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. And so this all is familiar when Garza they go through this with Garza because it's okay, this has happened before. It's happened a few times, honestly.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. Yeah, and so Anna is determined. I mean, she's using Elise's gifts for good. You know, we saved Mara. Now we need to lead you to the remains of the other victims and free me, free them. And yeah, then we talked about yeah, the the briefcase jump scare a little bit, which you know, just horror stuff. Gotta do 'em. You gotta do it from time to time.

SPEAKER_03

You think you're in the clear. You think you're in the clear, and no. I remember the first time I watched this, that just made me jump.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Uh and then when she gets taken by key face after it pops out of the suitcase, then she's in the further area a little bit, so you get the time fuckery. Like I said, she's talking to her younger self and learning.

SPEAKER_03

I liked that scene though, when she's talking to her younger self and telling her not to give up and keep doing the thing she's doing. And sh I liked that. It made me think about what Elise knowing what Elise knew after the first movie with Josh and Dalton, if she knew those things back then, how it might have steered the bus, but it didn't.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Cause she didn't know. But we knew.

SPEAKER_00

Learning from watching it. Keyface's role as a demon or whatever is the one who can unlock the red doors. Although apparently he still requires somebody like Elise with her abilities in order to do that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. He needs help. He can't do it on his own. At least at this point. So luckily, Imogen is there. Um Spex tries to do the hypnotizing. Tucker ends up having to do it, and it's just the further, like how dark everything is in the further. The whole thing is just so terrifying because you know that a demon or a ghost can come out at any time, and they may be friendly or they might not be friendly. You don't know what you're gonna get hit with.

SPEAKER_00

Imogen seems to handle the further pretty dang well for her first time, not knowing what she's getting into. I think she did great. Um, with Anna there to guide her as well, so that's nice, continuing to help out. But then they get to the red door, guides her through that. Wonderful, but uh Anna's not going in there. And you know, it's like when when the friendly ghost is like, you've no, nope, you're on your own at this point. It's not a great sign. It's not a good thing. When even the people who are already dead are horrified of it, you're like, that's not good.

SPEAKER_03

No, this is not a good situation for her at all. But she's very brave to go in. She definitely has reasons to do it and like motivation to do it because her sister's in the hospital still in pretty much a coma, and they don't really know what's wrong with her. Very much like Dalton, yeah. Where he was in the further, and no one really knew what was wrong, and they couldn't wake him up.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, which is why I think what we see with Elise at the end of this movie seeing Dalton having that connection and realizing that's why Elise in the first movie comes over and kind of knows what to do. I mean, she still has to kind of do those tests in the first movie to realize and make sure. But when she sees lipstick face and uh like sees him and then knows kind of she puts those pieces together pretty quickly and knows like, oh yep, okay, I know exactly what's going on.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And it flows really well, and that's one thing that made me really sad about how it ended when she's she says to Tucker and Specs, you know, that she always thought she was afraid of dying, but then she realized she was uh afraid of dying before she had a family again, and that just made me so sad thinking she's finally feeling free of some of this guilt, and she's surrounded herself with people that are her family, and literally and figuratively, and it's not gonna last that long.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_03

And that made me sad thinking about that.

SPEAKER_00

Although I don't know, because even all the things that happen in well really just the second movie, and then Red Door, which we haven't got to yet, so I won't say much. Uh but yeah, I I think even after her death in the first Insidious, I think she's still doing okay.

SPEAKER_03

Uh yeah. That's true. That is true.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's it's good that you know it we're in this like key demons domain and key faced's domain, almost had Elise like in her head the way that maybe not exactly the way that like with her father or with Garza, because I don't think we get Elise in any kind of mode like that, but there is still some hatred and violence that he can tap into. A lot of it is just more guilt and fear. Um But Imogen finds her kind of at the last minute there and snaps her out of it, and then we get that great line, I love, from Elise. Where's like, you're not gonna get in my head like that, and she says, I won't feed you, you can fucking starve.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. I love that too. I love that. I feel like she's now as an adult able to push back and be the person that she couldn't be as a child when she was first facing all of this, and for her to be able to do that, it was amazing. It's so empowering to see her do that because she's a badass.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

She's such a badass, and not in a way like she's a ninja or she's got a gun or whatever. She's just using her abilities and what she knows to be able to get the job done, and that makes her a badass.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Uh of course, keyface just responds by taking Imogen, so that sucks. Uh not fully great. Uh, and then of course Elise's father, Gerald, is there. And it part of it, you know, at first you're like, oh, it's just kind of the way of keyface getting in her head, and it's like a memory of him, but then you realize, no, that's really him in the further. His spirit is there. And kind of his last little like moment, he does sacrifice himself, at least attempting to help her. So there's a little bit of light there. And so I think that's something that's like even somebody is just like dark and honestly bad as he was, still having that little bit of light in love in him, helps Elise, I think, realize like, well, then somebody like me, I've I can let go of the mistakes I've made or the guilt that I've held because like I I am doing good and I am helping people.

SPEAKER_03

Being able to come to terms with something and let go of guilt, it's incredibly empowering and it allows you to bring light into yourself, really. Because we're human beings and we carry things. It doesn't mean we want to, it's just how it how it is as humans. And so if you carry something that long, it's gonna have a lifelong effect on you. But it's such a weight off when you get to release some of the things that you've been carrying, and so for her to be able to do that here, it just was amazing to get to see that, and for her dad to sacrifice himself.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

To um, the whistle comes into play.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I was questioning that a little bit. Maybe I missed something. Where how did Imogen wind up with it?

SPEAKER_03

Anna gave her the whistle when they went in before she went in. Yeah. She gave her something, and I'm like, what did she give her? And I hold it back because this is a dark movie, it's very hard to see. She gave her the whistle because again, this would not be a goof in the movie because Insidious doesn't do that.

SPEAKER_00

No. Um that's why I was just like, Why did I miss it? And I think so. They just kind of Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

She gave her the whistle and Elise is able to blow the whistle. She can't speak, but she can blow the whistle before the demon is able to stick the key in and send her to the hospital.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, uh, I mean, her mother did tell her, and Christian, you know, blow the whistle if you're scared, and I will come. And that she did. Uh, which again another insidious trope in a good way. Um the spirits of the good people who were, you know, loved ones being able to come in and defeat the spirits of the further and and push them back. We've seen that before, we'll see it again, maybe. Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_03

I liked it because it gave Elise another opportunity to let go of some of her guilt because she actually got some closure with her mother. She needed that. This was a big Elise movie. This was about her and what she's carried. We don't even realize that when we're watching the first three movies, how much guilt she's carried.

SPEAKER_00

Like it is interesting that, like, a character that was a huge side character in the first movie and dies at the end of the movie, then becomes kind of the central character of the entire franchise.

SPEAKER_03

She does. She does. She's a big part of it. She's the continuity, I think, between each of the movies. What her connection is with the new one that's coming out, I have no idea because I haven't paid any attention to anything other than it's coming.

SPEAKER_00

I I didn't even know it was coming out in August. It's coming out in August. Until today, when I was just like looking through, because I was like looking at like the release schedule to like try to build like a little chronological thing and timeline thing for this. And then that's where I was just like, oh, this one, oh, it comes out Oh soon. Very soon. Got it. Next month. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. Uh yeah, it's coming very quickly.

SPEAKER_00

By the time this episode comes out for our listeners, it's like a couple of weeks.

SPEAKER_03

It's been a really big year for horror movies. It it just has. They've been all over the place. There have been independent films and bigger like projects. It's it's really been like a snowball going downhill. It just more and more and more. We're getting incredibly spoiled. I keep adding movies to the list and putting the release date in other little notes, and I finally put it in a Google Doc because there were just so many that were coming.

SPEAKER_00

And then yeah, so there's that one in next month, and then there's another one in pre-production that is an insidious story, so I think it's gonna be unrelated to Elise and the Lamberts and That'll be the first one that Elise in the universe still.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. That'll be the first one that Elise and Specs and Tucker won't be in.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like, that's kind of strange to think about that.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm curious to see how they because I'm I'm assuming we will deal with the further and the demonic realm, but it will be all new people, I'm sure, if we have parasychics, parapsychologists, and demon doctors or you know, whatever, that like it'll be completely new characters that are dealing with these things. So I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I'm curious.

SPEAKER_03

It's gonna be different for sure. I yeah, I don't know. It's it's continuing. We will we will get there. That's why we need to cover the the red door, because we need to be ready for this one to cover this one at some point, probably next season, just because we've already this is the tenth movie in this season. We have a bunch more to go, but yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so yeah, we're kinda there, you know, her mother comes in, helps out, and now she's got Imogen, and then they even find Melissa, and well, you know, Melissa's there, and she's not in good shape, so we've got to get her out. Uh head back out, and then oops, wrong red door. Uh that's just little Dalton Lambert slipping and falling. We'll see him again later. There's much more pressing matters right now, like your dying niece, so we'll just we'll circle back to him. Let's move on. Let's get in the next door.

SPEAKER_03

We're just gonna keep going. Just gonna keep going.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and it's it's a nice little like kind of ending there. Uh, you know, Melissa is saved, Imogen and Elise are back in the world of the living. Uh Elise has this new reinvigorated mission to continue helping people. Uh, she has reconciliation with her brother. It's it's a really beautiful thing.

SPEAKER_03

She deserves it. Like, she deserves to have good things because she is putting herself at risk, obviously. To help people. And it warmed my heart that her mom was proud of her for everything that she's doing. And I'm glad that she got those moments in this film because again, I didn't realize she was caring so much until we got to really see behind the scenes. And I like that they gave us the glimpse into her traumatic childhood, but didn't make it a whole movie. They made it like a catalyst for her becoming who she is, but they didn't make it the whole movie about Elise's childhood because that would have been incredibly depressing, like to see. I like the way that Lee Wan L wove this story together. He's a really interesting storyteller when it comes to scary movies. He does a great job. And then we also get the comedic acting part of it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Which you I don't know. I mean, we see it in cooties, but you also get it, I think, in this franchise, these little moments.

SPEAKER_00

Texan Spe Tex. Tex and Spucker. Specs and Tucker are very much the comic relief of this franchise that are needed from time to time for sure.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and maybe they aren't so hopeless as we see kind of their interactions with Imogen and Melissa at the end of the movie. They're not fully sick of them, so that's good.

SPEAKER_03

Specs Specs kissed her. Yeah. He kissed Imogen. I was just like, who are you? I I couldn't believe it. I'm like, have you Tucker's rubbed off on you or something, and you've just decided that you need to not hold back? I don't know. But he kisses her and she doesn't push him away. So I think he grew on her. I think what happened is he grew on her.

SPEAKER_00

Like a bad rash.

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

But you know, it's still there. Yeah, but then you with the end of the movie, not too much time to rest. Uh attic boy Dalton does still need your help. You got that little inclination there, and then Yep, now here comes the phone call. So time for Elise to go do the first movie.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. Lorraine Lambert on the line asking for help. So she goes. I think we did it.

SPEAKER_00

That's it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

She's psychic. We're a sidekick. That yeah, that's just gonna be. I'm surprised it never came up before.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah. Yeah, no other thoughts, no other thing. So we've done that, and then we don't have to worry about the feedback part to tell people like, and then next week, what are we gonna do? Is you were here along with the journey with us listeners that we decided we'll just roll into our door next episode and we'll wrap up Insidious for the time being. Knowing that a new one is right around the corner, and again, it won't we won't cover it right away. We'll give it some time, come out on streaming, hopefully, and but we'll I think next season we can catch up on Insidious at least. And then we need to dive back, as I said at the top, and then Conjuring. I want to continue on those movies and that stuff too.

SPEAKER_03

I think the Conjuring 2 is better than the first one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But honestly, though, I think even doing them like that whole universe in not chronological, but like release order. Technically, before we get to Conjuring 2, we need to do Annabelle.

SPEAKER_03

True. True. We're gonna have to look at that timeline.

SPEAKER_00

I already did today, and I've got it all I've got it written down. Again, even though it's not this universe, they're c connected, like they're close enough, they're similar enough to be. Yeah, it makes me wonder. So I I've got the entire conjuring universe timeline. Not by chronological, because I want to watch them in release order on first watch for me, because I haven't seen most of them. So for first watch, I want to see them in the order they actually came out because certain things are supposed to be revealed in a certain order. It's fun to go watch them in like chronological order if you've already seen them and see how things line up in a timeline. But for first watch, watch them the way they came out, because that's kind of how they're meant to be viewed, I believe.

SPEAKER_03

I'm really interested in what you think of the first Annabelle, because it did not get lots of love. But the next ones did.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like got more like love from fans. So it's interesting. I've seen them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then I think we'll even throw in like Wolves at the Door and La Yorona as well, because from what I looked into them a little bit without spoiling anything, I haven't watched those movies. They're not technically conjuring universe, but they kind of are. They each each of those movies have one character that is a small character from the conjuring movies that appear.

SPEAKER_03

So they're not adjacent, but not in it. So or maybe they are adjacent.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

There's I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

They have a single character that crosses over to those movies.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

I think like a priest or like a police officer or something. Like uh it's just like a little like something. But still, I'm like, well, you know what? Then give it's an excuse to watch them because I want to anyway.

SPEAKER_03

Well, that's what we uh use this podcast for sometimes is you know what? I've always wanted to, or I haven't seen that in a long time, or one of us hasn't seen it at all. Let's do it just so that we have an excuse to revisit it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That's kind of how we pick some of the movies that we do sometimes is oh, you haven't seen that, then you need to see that, so we'll do it next. Yeah, that's how that's how it goes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think our our season and and next season stuff is shaping up. You're talking about newer stuff you're keeping a track on. I think we need to do obsession very soon. I'm throwing it out there in the universe on air, so to speak, so people can hear me say it. No, we I think we should have that.

SPEAKER_03

It's streaming or it's coming soon.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's coming very soon.

SPEAKER_03

Um Yeah, by the time this episode comes out, it will be out.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Undertone is now on HBO Max, and we want to do that one. We're just uh so I will say we're we're that one is definitely on the docket. Listeners know uh we're trying to maybe lock in a guest for that one. So that's why we're holding off on that one for a little bit, but but we'll see what what happens.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, you may not get many uh special chatting episodes with us this season because we're just like dying about all the movies that are coming out. We want to talk about them, so we're just digging in.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. So Yeah. There goes the feedback code as well. Stuff we want to get to or hear about. Maybe there's some thoughts on this movie from some listeners.

SPEAKER_03

So uh hopefully it's it's not uh the demon again.

SPEAKER_00

All right, we do have one little bit of feedback, one little piece this week, and I'll go ahead and get right into that. And this one comes from Catherine, you guessed it, of course. Fantastic. Uh she says, I'm surprised two years have passed since you covered chapter three. Yeah, I think we talked about that. I was like, wait, holy cow, how did we let this go so long?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh she goes, I had to read a few wiki summaries before starting the last key. Tucker and specs are still awesome, but I like Elise a lot more after knowing her s her history. The ghosts are mostly jump scares, though the key fingers going into flesh was pretty creepy. But the scariest monsters were Gerald and Tim and their abuse of women and children. I was a bit disappointed that their evil was just a result of Keyface's control, expecting something more complicated. Seeing them leave the door open to Dalton was unexpected, but how does that connect to the demon that targeted Josh as a child? We may need the podcast to explain a few things. Uh yeah, now that you've listened, I I don't know if there's really any much connection there. I don't think we talked about that. If there is, we missed it. Um but yeah. I don't know. I think that's all just kind of kept within that one. I don't I don't know. It's been a while too for those. Uh anyway, she continues on again. The reconciliation was really satisfying, and it was as close as Insidious can get to a happy ending. I know I've seen the Red Door, but remember nothing about it, so I'm looking forward to a rewatch. I assume next season.

SPEAKER_03

Well about that. Why don't you wait till the end of this episode?

SPEAKER_00

Well, you might be surprised.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you so much, Catherine, for your feedback. If anyone out there would like to leave feedback on any movie we've covered, as we've said before, you can leave feedback by going to our Discord server for Podcast Go. We have a channel on there, Run for Your Lives. You can then leave feedback there. You can submit it via Facebook and Instagram or our email, run for your lives podcast at gmail.com. We really appreciate it.

SPEAKER_00

We very much do. And of course, speaking of share the love, you know I gotta give some shout-outs to things going on in the podcastica universe around us. A couple things for you to check out this week. Of course, the Walking Deadcast is covering the return, the season three premiere of Walking Dead, Dead City. That show is back, so you can check out Ben and Alex over there covering that. They got the premiere episode up now. So you can go listen to that. And then also, of course, on Dragoncast, House of the Dragon, also season three, continuing to chug on along. It's been a great season. I've been loving it so much. A lot of crazy stuff going on there. Um, been a great show. Always love when Game of Thrones universe is back on my TV, and love it when Dragoncast is back podcasting on it. But you can check out Veronica and Rennie over there, joined by David this week, covering this week's episode, episode six of season three, Faceless Men. What a good one. So yeah, go check that out as well. And then if you want more of me and Daphne, of course, you can check out our other podcast, the Buffalo Buffalo Podcast. Uh we usually just get together, hang out with our friends Jeff and Jerry, play some fun games, goofy games, try to make each other laugh, be as ridiculous as possible. Of course, uh, the most recent episode, um, we had to take just a little bit of a break over there, but you're not gonna feel it really, because the episodes keep coming out. That's a backlog recording strategies. But um, as we would take a little break to help that a little bit, we did do uh so if you're a you know avid listener of this podcast, it'll feel familiar if you go check out Buffalo this week because it's just uh the crossover episode where we had Jeff and Jerry on for They Live uh earlier on this podcast. Posted that episode over there so we can kind of get some cross promotion going. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. It's fun. Go and listen to it. It will make your heart happy. You'll get to hear them terrorize me on an episode where we talk about a movie. What could be more fun?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, if you haven't already listened to that on this feed, then go do it over there, I guess. I don't know. Uh yeah. Also, then go check out that podcast and other episodes of that, because it's different, but it's a lot of fun.

SPEAKER_03

It definitely is.

SPEAKER_00

So, some fun stuff for you to check out this week, but then next week we will be back here next Friday with some more Run for Your Lives. And uh, we kind of hinted at it a little bit earlier with Catherine, but Daphne, what are we doing next week?

SPEAKER_03

Well, ten years later, a father and son must confront the buried memories and supernatural forces they believed were left behind. We are going back to back to complete the Insidious franchise for now, as we discuss Patrick Wilson's directorial debut, Insidious the Red Door.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. We we talked about how it's been two years since we did chapter three, and we didn't want to wait that long again, so instead we did it the next week.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, we did, and we saw this movie together in the theaters three years ago. It's quite a long time to wait to do a movie.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So we're dropping it next week. So please send in your feedback on that one. And I said complete it for now because there's another insidious movie that's coming out.

SPEAKER_00

So two more insidious movies coming out.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so it's gonna continue. We're just catching up for now. And with that, we have reached the end of another fun, creepy, scary, ridiculous episode of Run for Your Lives. Thanks everyone for listening. I'm Daphne.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm Peggy.

SPEAKER_03

And if you have to run, you better run for your lives.
