SPEAKER_03

You're listening to the Run for Your Lives Podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Hey everyone, welcome to the show. I'm Daphne. And I'm Pake. And this is the Run for Your Lives Podcast.

SPEAKER_03

This episode is the supernatural horror film Undertone, directed by Ian Twassen and released on March 13th, 2026.

SPEAKER_01

We're doing another new one.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

So great.

SPEAKER_03

Enjoyed doing them, and I think a lot of listeners enjoy the newer ones too.

SPEAKER_01

So uh Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

They get excited when we do that. They really seem to respond with feedback and excitement when we cover anything that's come out recently, like maybe in the last three or four months. So I'm looking forward to covering a movie soon that we both saw in the theaters over the weekend.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Uh for sure. Um yeah, we will definitely cover the end of Oak Street when it is more widely available streaming and purchase at home and stuff. That's we we wait for those. But yeah, no, I've definitely got a lot of thoughts about that one. And even just I had an interesting theater experience with that one, but we'll talk about all of this. When we record that episode, but also we can I can talk about more specifics that like about certain scenes and stuff when we cover the movie here.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, great. The theater didn't get robbed, did it? No. Okay, because no, um, not at this one, but there was a time that Chris and I went to the movies, and when we came out after the film had completed, I don't even remember what movie it was. He probably does because he remembers everything. Um, there were cop cars because the theater had been robbed while we were in the watching a movie.

SPEAKER_03

Interesting. Yeah. You were watching Ocean's Eleven. It was all part of the play.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe.

SPEAKER_03

I when I saw Oceans Eleven in theaters, it got interrupted halfway through with a fire alarm that we all had to exit. Oh my gosh. So, you know, fire emergency exit in the theater back to like to the outside, the back alley outside. So that was interesting.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh. That's wild. I've also had the movie stop because the projector is broken down and there's some other problems that we have to leave and come back and watch the movie again. So, like, we're halfway through. It was one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and it was incredibly frustrating because they were just getting to a really good part and boom, over. We're sorry, folks. Was not fun.

SPEAKER_03

No.

SPEAKER_01

Well, let's dive into Undertone the same way that we always do.

SPEAKER_03

Um was filmed every time we do Undertone, we dive into it the same way.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no, you're being a brat. We're gonna tackle this the same way that we tackle all the movies. We're gonna start with some production notes. It was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In fact, it was shot inside Ian Toisson's childhood home in the Toronto suburb of Rexdale. This is Toisson's directorial debut, and he also wrote the screenplay. He's now based in Montreal, but he developed Undertone from a radio play and was turning it into a feature film built largely around sound, which we got to see, and here. He started work on it in 2020, but it was put on hold due to COVID-19 and the pandemic, and the story was partially inspired and influenced by his experience caring for his terminally ill parents during the pandemic.

SPEAKER_03

Wow.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there's a lot of underlying things like that with this movie. The budget was $500,000. It grows $22 million at the box office.

SPEAKER_03

Go Ian.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's so fantastic. I love these low budget movies that deliver like this, especially financially, because then it means we should get to see more from this director. And I'm interested in what other ideas he has, which I'll talk a little bit about what's next for him.

SPEAKER_03

Nice.

SPEAKER_01

Was 94 minutes long. Pake, why don't you give us a synopsis on this one?

SPEAKER_03

All right. Evie Babbage, a skeptical paranormal podcaster caring for her comatose mother, receives disturbing recordings tied to a folkloric threat, and every new file pulls her closer to fears she can no longer explain away.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, she was definitely a skeptic. That 100%. Um you could tell from the dynamic between Evie and Justin that it was very much the skeptic versus the believer. But I think it worked between the two of them because they had a really good relationship and and good chemistry, really, to be able to do a podcast. I was envious of how they could just stop and start whenever. Like oh yeah, definitely stuff. Wow, you just pick up and stop whenever you f when you feel like it. Oh all right. Um, that's not how it works in our world.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_01

Usually we start and finish a film the same day, like within the same time frame. We don't pick up and say, oh, Peg, let's do the rest of it next week. You know, reach out to me, we'll figure it out. We would never get a podcast out if we did that.

SPEAKER_03

Nothing would ever get done.

SPEAKER_01

Especially a weekly podcast. Like, how do you how do you do that?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I definitely have that uh thought. Like there's a note, so yeah, because I this is another one of those movies where I didn't break anything into care uh characters or stuff, so it's like you get them in the order I took them. So you get chronological, it's like live tweeting. Uh but yeah, so finding where is so now I gotta find where that note is. Yeah, it's okay. I said episodes every Friday. Hey, us too. Also, if they're taking breaks and being like, ah, we can pick up on Tuesday, they must also bank episodes.

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I guess. But then they but even but then later she's like, okay, so we finish this one, we'll get it out Friday, and then we'll we'll do a part two. So I was like, how are they releasing weekly when they record 15 minutes every several days? I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

It would take us two weeks to get through an episode if we did that. And no, it's not it's not gonna work.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I I will say, yeah, you you liked the the chemistry and the way that worked out, which I mean, yeah, definitely like Nina Carey carries this movie. She does an incredible job with that, but also that like I'll give big props to Adam DeMarco for also helping carry that chemistry so well without being seen on screen at all the entire time. Just a voice acting performance.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Here's a look behind the curtain for our listeners. Pake and I are on Zoom talking and we can see each other when we're talking.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I thought it was interesting that they record through just like a phone call and then they Yeah. Whatever system they use, I don't know how that all works. How do you get how do you have the phone call? Is it I mean, if they're I guess are they on MacBooks, can you record a phone call through MacBooks into the recording software also? I don't know if that works. Never tried that.

SPEAKER_01

I was trying to figure out what software they were using, because it I mean, it could have been a garage band for all I know. I I really don't know. I use Audacity, you use uh QuickTime to download. I edit it and level it and produce it and get it ready to go out every Friday.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah, I definitely have a lot more like weird production type like thoughts and notes that most people watching this movie will never have ever thought of. But it's like from a podcaster. I'm like, well, this and that.

SPEAKER_01

You know, the other day I was talking to Chris because he watched Obsession. And I was telling him all the little things that we had noticed about this movie. Because you look at it like a podcaster and not like a moviegoer.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I was saying even more just like about I have like weird like nitpicks or questions about like the podcasting aspect of air production.

SPEAKER_02

Like like what are they doing?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, which way you talk about that, I was just like, they're what is this recording schedule? How are they a weekly when it's like you can catch us every Friday? It's like, how? How long are your episodes?

SPEAKER_01

And how do you have time for anything else if you're just sprinkling this in whenever? And who edits it? Because it's not something that's gonna be easy to edit because you've got pockets of little pieces and 15 minutes here and then more imports, and no.

SPEAKER_03

It's yeah, it's so much of like, well, okay, now you have to also take that audio file because they're playing the like files on the computers like you also have to be recording that, and it's its own file that you're gonna have to drop into the edit. There's so many things that like 90% of people who watch this movie are like, not they don't think about that at all. And we're sitting here going, what is this? How do they do that? That doesn't make sense.

SPEAKER_01

You know what? Something as simple as I loved her little recording desk. It was so neat. I'm like, why can't my desk look like that? Because it doesn't. It's covered with stuff. There's just yeah, there's just yeah, it's it's it's interesting, I will say. Getting to cover a movie where a podcast is a big part of it is really fun because it's not something that we've really done before. And both being podcasters, and as we're recording this, celebrating six years of Run for Your Lives, like it's insane to think about that. Yeah, but that's what we've been doing, and it's interesting to watch someone else's process because for the most part, the only thing that I've ever really seen has been what our other podcastica or peripheral podcasters do versus podcastica universe around us and beyond. Yes, exactly. Yeah. That clever person who says that every week at the end of our episode. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I want to point out Nina Keary, very familiar to me. She was on Handmaid's Tale, she played Alma, one of my favorite characters on Handmaid's Tale, and I recognized her right away, but it didn't connect to m in my head because she I don't think I ever really saw her outside of her Handmaid's Tale attire. And so her hair was down and she just looked like a normal person. And so I had to actually go and look it up, and I'm like, oh my god, it's Alma. This is fantastic. I'm so excited to get to talk about a movie that she you know, she's in because you know, having talked about her own handmaid's tale, it's just it's great to be able to do something different that she's involved with. So I was super, super excited about her being on it. I want to point out one thing though. So when she's hearing these files on she's wearing her headphones and everything, she had never heard them before they recorded the scene. So this was all new.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. That's cool. So the reactions, so there's levels of meta because in the movie Justin is playing them for the first time, so she's reacting in real time. So Evie is reacting in real time as Nina is reacting in real time to the first time hearing. That's really cool.

SPEAKER_01

Isn't that cool? I I like what Ian Twissan does with movies. Well, with this movie, I mean, we haven't seen anything else really from him, but I like those little nuances where he's doing these clever things to evoke a genuine reaction. And I think that authenticity comes across to the audience.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I was gonna say n nothing makes more authentic film than fully authentic filming, like where it the authenticity is there.

SPEAKER_01

So Exactly.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. You don't get a better reaction than a real reaction from somebody.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. I know that there have been other instances where directors will prank their stars by a scaring them or showing them something that's coming in the movie because they think if we record it now in this organic environment, it's gonna get a more organic response, and that's what we really want from the film. Yeah. And so I think Twissan knew what he wanted from this, and he spent a lot of time, you know, really focusing on what he wanted from this movie. I mean, even during the pandemic, he was working on it, he was taking pictures around the house because he was in the house taking care of his parents, taking pictures of different things that he wanted to make sure to capture in the movie. And so I think this project ended up being a very personal thing to him.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, which makes sense. A lot of those just kind of random lingering shots of hallways and doorways and and corners and parts of the house are just it's kind of his own personal little love letter to his childhood and his parents and his his growing up there, which is Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Two more movies are planned. One he's working on already as a prequel.

SPEAKER_03

Interesting.

SPEAKER_01

So that could be interesting if they do it kind of in a found, not maybe found footage, but maybe film it found footage way. I think it could be clever. Um but he's also working on Paranormal Activity 8.

SPEAKER_03

Wow. That's quite a get for him, like immediately. Yeah. Franchise movie like that. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and those movies for me have been hit or miss.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Also, there's eight of them now. I saw I think I saw I know I saw the first one. Maybe saw two, and even less of a sure maybe on three.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think I've seen four of them. And yeah, I hmm. It's not my favorite franchise, but I would be interested in seeing eight if he's involved in it, because I have a feeling he could refresh things in a way that would really help steer things back onto a track that makes sense.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But we'll see. I mean, I've read the synopsis of some of the other movies, and for some reason or another, I've said, yeah, no, I don't think I'm gonna go see that one, especially not the theater. Um I also really liked the format and the use of the voices, like we really only saw Evie and her mom. Those would be the only two characters on screen. Everything else was voice, and I don't usually like movies like that. I don't like it when it's so focused on one location.

SPEAKER_03

But that changes love it if it can be done well.

SPEAKER_01

If it can be done well.

SPEAKER_03

Like uh there's a movie. Have you ever seen I think it's called Buried with Ryan Reynolds? I have not. It's such a great movie, and it's literally because it's like him being buried alive. Like he's like in a like just him in a casket or whatever, underground with a cell phone. That's the whole movie, and it's so well done.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. Yeah, I don't know if I would like that. I guess we'll see. Maybe I'll watch it. Maybe we'll have to cover it. I don't know. You know that that's the only way that anything ever happens on this. I know for the honestly. Okay. You haven't seen that yet, Peg? Okay, we're gonna cover it next week. Like, that's usually what happens.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

And the funny thing is, this is the last movie that I had on our list of movies to cover that are actually scheduled. So we're gonna have to like come up with another. Pull in some movies. Um as we're recording this though, the new Insidious is coming out later this week. So we'll we'll have that um sometime maybe before the end of the season. We'll see. Um but yeah, sound was very important in this movie. And yeah. Evie and Justin have a podcast. That was my very first note.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I was like, should I go through like all those like podcast meta stuff? I was like, we'll just get to it when we get to it with with notes. So yeah, we might as well dive in on full notes now. Uh but I love the yeah, some of the behind-the-scenes stuff that you had there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I think it helps set the stage for everything that's coming and how we visualize what what there is going forward.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So yeah, so we get yeah, their podcast, and then Evie is staying at her mother's place, this house here, while taking care of her. Uh, because it seems like she was living with her boyfriend Darren, and then she is now for a few weeks or whatever, has been at this place just kind of taking care of her mom. It's like end-of-life care in-home hospice kind of thing. Uh and so she's been doing this podcast for a while, so she's got her own little temporary st studio set up, of just the kitchen table, it looks like, or dining room table. Um and yeah, her friend Justin is the co-host, uh, and so she's just like recording from there, continuing the podcast thing. Yeah, and like all of the like very meta podcasty things. Uh I end up picking up their whole the conversation before recording. Absolutely. Uh sometimes it goes on for way too long.

SPEAKER_01

Uh does it though? Does it really go on for way too long? I feel like we either do it before or after. Sometimes we'll get on a lot of or both, yeah. Um, yeah. It's a shame we don't get along, Pig.

SPEAKER_03

I know. Uh also they're remote and far away from each other, as they talk about. Um, which we we do as well. Uh and then also they mention, because you know, her taking care of her mom and all this stuff, and he's like, Do you are you sure you want to do this? Are you sure? And she's like, This is the only thing that's keeping me sane. And I get that also. Uh little vulnerability. We again our opening before recording conversation. I'm not gonna get all into that for the listeners, but a little bit of a peek into that. I have had a horrible, stressful, insane day today, and I'm still doing this right now because I need it. I need this like normalcy and fun and escape a little bit. So, and we're recording Buffalo right after this, too. So a double dose, it's the perfect day for it because it has literally been one of the worst days ever. It's just been a shit show, and so I need this, and it's good.

SPEAKER_01

And you know, there have been so many times that I've needed this so badly. Like, we'll get on and I'll be like, I need to do this. I've been looking forward to this all day because it's just been it's been a day, it's been crazy. Um because I even said, Are you sure you want to record? We don't have to, like not to their extent where we're gonna record 10 minutes and then record 10 minutes tomorrow. We're gonna do we're waiting for the long haul.

SPEAKER_03

We're doing the whole thing.

SPEAKER_01

Um, but I gave you the option, and you've done the same for me when when if I've been sick or something has happened, and I think that's part of what makes a podcast run well, is when the co-hosts really understand each other and can you know be flexible and and just you know, chill about it and not yeah, not freak out because it's it's meant to be fun. We started this much like Toisson created all of his stuff during the pandemic. This podcast started during the pandemic. I was not a podcaster before COVID 19.

SPEAKER_03

Needed some kind of social interaction and normalcy, conversations with people.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And so this came about.

SPEAKER_03

I couldn't go to the movie theater with a group of friends and then s we would sit outside the theater and stand around for another hour and have deep conversations about everything for you know. Couldn't do that at the time. So this was this was the outlet for that.

SPEAKER_01

It was. It was. And we watched a lot of movies that were older or had come out somewhat, you know, not in the 1950s or anything, but we had covered a bunch of different films. I think the first one we were both so excited when we got to cover that new movie that released on Netflix. Mm-hmm. And the name of it's Escaping Me. Was Love and Monsters our first movie? Love and Monsters. I think that was our first movie.

SPEAKER_03

Probably like Amazon Prime or something, maybe I can't remember exactly. But yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I think yeah, that was that was our our first like movie that came out this year. Because also with the pandemic, there wasn't a lot of those. Because movies weren't being made and coming out anyway.

SPEAKER_01

No. So we had Love and Monsters and were so excited to get to do that. Um because I loved going to the movies. That's just been something that I would do a lot of. And it's funny that I podcast now because some of the people I have in my life that maybe I don't see as often like my hairdresser or whatever. I saw her today and she's like, How's the podcast going? And and she knew me before I started podcasting, and she was someone who said, You should have been doing this all along because you talk you're, you know, you talk a lot. And I'm like, Oh, thank you. I I know, I do.

SPEAKER_03

I had like a dental thing I had to like deal with. And so like the two different days that I was like at the dentist, and then that was like talking about like recovery time for like the like procedure I had to get done and stuff, and then it was just like it better be pretty quick, because I was like, because I have a podcast, and so I I need to talk because I talk a lot, and it's like yeah, they were like, Yeah, we can tell. Uh you sure do. Um you came in here for like a routine thing, and now we know your whole life story. So you exactly.

SPEAKER_01

But you know what? When you're going through something, at least me, if I'm super nervous about something, or it's I'm doing something I don't want to do, sometimes I'll talk even more because it's just like a blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. I can't I just want it anything to distract myself from what's coming is what I will do. Yeah. So so yeah, Evie is in this situation where she's recording this podcast with her friend Justin, and it seems like they didn't podcast. The undertone podcast.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's an interesting one. It's like all about ghost stories and hauntings and they say all things creepy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And I think they knew each other because they were talking about a place that they had both been before. I think it's something they knew each other in person, like before doing this podcast. And you and I did not know each other in person at all when we started this podcast. We had never met in person. We just met on Zoom, which became a lifeline during the pandemic. So um but they seem to have a really good relationship, and one of the things that came out to me though is them talking about getting into character.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Peg, do you think we get into character to be on here?

SPEAKER_03

Um it's like a yes and no. Okay. Like not really, like, not to that point, but kind of because you see, because it's like we'll go off on like weird tangents and stuff. So we've never referred to it that way. But we do have those moments of being like, okay, we need to get back on track. Or like, you know, it's like, let's get back into like mode.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

There's kind of a like a podcast mode.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um I think that's why we talk before and after. It's kind of if we talk before, it kind of gets that all out before we record. But then something comes up in our notes and we're just off on a tangent somewhere.

SPEAKER_03

We don't really say like back into character, instead we just say, and all of this is coming out is usually the phrase that gets.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Yeah. And now that you've listened to our tangent, we'll get back to the movie now. Yeah. That's you yeah. If it's not something that ends up coming out, it's we'll leave it in if it's if it applies.

SPEAKER_03

But yeah, the way this was done was very interesting because like we're in the headphones.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

Through like most of the movie when they're recording. You know, we get these loud, clear voices with no outside noise, which then again, the kind of nerdy part of me, I was like, man, what's the noise cancellation they're using? Because they have really great because she didn't turn the AC off in that house. And I will tell you, in an open room like that with no like barriers, that stuff picks up. And I was like, well, unless there's no AC in that house, because I live in Texas and I forget that there's still a lot of people living in the stone ages of no year-round built-in AC unit in the house. Uh but then when her headphones are off, I was like, no, I'm pretty sure I hear air. So like we that comes up so and then the clock ticking was a big thing. So I'm like, what cancellation? What noise cancellation are they using?

SPEAKER_01

You know, Zoom does take out like Zoom audio.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but they're even phones which pick up everything. Which they do have the mics also. Uh but it's like you gotta deal with phone audio and mic audio? That's just too much.

SPEAKER_01

I yeah, and and does their recording equipment pick up the phone, like his phone voice on her audio? Like that would be terrible to try to get it.

SPEAKER_03

So much question the the bleed over.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. It it it's it seems unconventional, and now it makes me want to go look up how do people record? But every person I've ever recorded with, we've always recorded locally. It's never been on a phone. It seems like Evie lives with her boyfriend regularly, but that doesn't seem to be something that she really wants to do. I mean, she even mentions at one point getting her own place or a different place, and I was just thinking, okay, wow, you've got a lot of stuff going on and dealing with your mom dying. I I don't think you should make big decisions.

SPEAKER_03

Well, they her and Justin have this conversation. That's the the pre-recording banter. It's because he asks, Well, what about Darren? This is her boyfriend, and it's just like and they they share a little shit talking, honestly. It's like, has he helped out at all? Like, does he come over to the house and help with your mom or even bring you stuff while you're there? No. If I can even get him to answer. So they're like, apparently he has been kind of a deadbeat and not helping at all. So, and then it's like, well, you know, they have that conversation. There's like, well, I don't want to say I told you so. Like, they're alluding to it's just like, Yeah, you know, I told you a year ago you should break up with him, basically. And she's like, I know. So this has been like uh her and her friend talking shit about her boyfriend, and then finally it's like so I think she's kind of over him and leaning towards breaking up with him anyway. And you can really see it when we do hear his voice over the phone later where he, you know, gets him or gets her to leave the house and go out to this like party and stuff for a little bit, when he's like, I love you, and her response is okay, bye. I was like, Yeah, that's noticeable.

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, I would pick up on that right away. Uh-huh. I mean, I think it was probably good for her to get out of the house, just because it's a lot mentally and emotionally and physically to take care of someone who is incapacitated. And yeah.

SPEAKER_03

There's like all the caretaker stuff in my head, also that like I couldn't I connect with this movie in that way too. Because I was like, yeah, he's trying to get her to get out, and he's kind of being douchey about it, because it's like, I just wanted to do something for you whenever she's trying to like say no, and then it was like, Yeah, you can't. But it's like, but I also I get it, like, you need that break as a caretaker. You absolutely do. But also in this state that she's in right now, because we then see like her having to clean her mother up right after, I was like, you can't really be leaving her alone when you're in a situation like that. Last minute plans just aren't viable. What should have happened is he was having this party, is it should have been days or even a week before, going, hey, this is coming up. So she could arrange for early invitation, and then you arrange a nurse or a respite fill-in or something like that.

SPEAKER_01

Like that's you bring Pake in to take care of it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah, you you have to be able to make plans. You need notice. I I mean, honestly, if you have kids, it's the same thing. Like you need to you can't just decide, okay, Sally and Joey, you're gonna stay home and sit on the couch, and mommy and daddy are going out and we're gonna leave you here alone. No, you can't really do that. It's courtesy if you want someone to come over and you know they have a complicated life, like Evie, or they have other responsibilities, like they're a parent, you need to give them notice. You can't just drop it on them like a bomb and expect that they're gonna be able to just pick up and do what you want them to do.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It doesn't work that way. You know, and she's got a mother who's incapacitated and aging, and it seems like her mother is really on her way out. Like she stopped eating. It's it's real serious.

SPEAKER_03

So Yeah, so they're you know, at least she's here at the house, they still record, and yeah, they got this this episode uh is just a surprise episode for Evie. Just dropped, which we've done that sometimes too. There's been an episode where like, no prep, I'm just gonna surprise you with something.

SPEAKER_01

I love those episodes.

SPEAKER_03

I'm I let's not do one like this.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no, no. Peg, we're not. We're not gonna do that.

SPEAKER_03

We're not gonna do that at all.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely, it would.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so with this one, they they received some mysterious audio files with an ominous message of some kind.

SPEAKER_01

Uh from a very weird email address with all sorts of letters in it.

SPEAKER_03

Uh so they're just gonna listen to them together on the pod for the first time. Uh and yeah, and the audio files are named with like the numbers in the words of the numbers, if that makes sense. Um you get if you watch it, you get it. Straight so much. So weird. So weird. Each audio file is like an entire night of recording, at least some of the earlier ones, while this couple is sleeping. I was like, there's got to be some huge files. And at first I was like, I'll send them over to you. And it's like, that's she can't just play that. Like, that's so long of a download. But then I was like, oh no, he's playing it and he's already downloaded them in advance, and then he's just playing and streaming it. I was like, that makes more sense.

SPEAKER_01

Because I was like, that's they wouldn't fit in an email, they'd be too big.

SPEAKER_03

That's way too much. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You'd have to do that.

SPEAKER_03

That's how you know this was a demonic email. It managed to fit all that into attached files. How did they do that? Uh only demons can do that.

SPEAKER_01

If you shrunk it down, the quality would be so bad you wouldn't be able to understand what they were saying. I mean, really, half the time there was screaming and other things going on. So how audible does that really need to be?

SPEAKER_03

I mean, this is a good point. It's like only demons are capable of sending emails with attached files that large. He's the male demon for a reason.

SPEAKER_01

Do people even know what that is? I mean, I know what that is. I still get them. I still get them.

SPEAKER_03

Whenever I try to unsubscribe from some bullshit spam email, and then I get that back, it's like, you can't, because it's not real. And I'm like, yes, I know. That's why I don't want it anymore.

SPEAKER_00

Mailer demon. That should be a band name. Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they're they're listening to these files. We get Jessa singing London Bridge in her sleep in the first one, which immediately already clicks weird for Evie a little bit, because that's the song we saw her singing to her mother in the opening of the movie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then Justin's going to say, did you hear that? Did you hear that when it played? And I was like, I'm kind of with Evie on this one. I'm not hearing what he's talking about. He's like, Mike, kill all. And I was like, No, I don't hear that. You played it three times now, and I still don't hear it. Where are you? Are you okay, Justin?

SPEAKER_01

No, he's not okay. He's not okay, folks. He's not okay.

SPEAKER_03

And then they talk about the Baba Black Sheet thing. It was like, oh my god, it sounds like that was like, I also heard nothing in that. So Justin, are you high?

SPEAKER_01

I think so. I think he was. I mean I mean, maybe not, but I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

We go digging into these like children's things, which I was very interested, the first one with the London Bridge, uh, the Eleanor of Province and London Bridge theory. So I did do some of my own Googling and stuff.

SPEAKER_01

I wondered if you would, because I was curious.

SPEAKER_03

I found nothing about child sacrifice and orphans and stuff like all of that seemed to be made up for the movie. I I really I think what the London Bridge one is was that this Eleanor Province, or there's another um queen that uh is tied to also, both of them kind of similarly were very grossly mismanaging the upkeep of the bridge, so it's literally like my fair lady, it's falling down. Um do something about it.

SPEAKER_01

Uh well, um, so I looked up some stuff too, because I was cu I was really curious about it. Um, is it true burying orphans' kids alive in London Bridge? Um and it this is what I figured out. Um Evie references the legend, medieval builders buried living victims inside London Bridge to protect the structure. However, no human remains have ever been found in the bridge's masonry, and there is no historical evidence supporting the story. It's like, okay, alright. Because honestly, everything that would come up in this movie that they talk about, I felt like I had to go Google and find out if it's real.

SPEAKER_03

And I was looking at some stuff, because it's like, well, the Baba Black Sheep one, and it's like uh or then they start going with, you know, all these different ones. Uh they look into a bunch of them, and I was like, I don't know. I think you're kind of stretching the lore a little bit. Not all old kids' nursery rhymes are about kids dying. Uh some are. Um There's Ring Around the Rosie. I thought she did come up with that one, and I had a note about that even way before she typed that one in. Because that one's famously known to at least be theorized to be about the bubonic plague.

SPEAKER_01

Um that's what I had heard.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's too old to definitively have a confirmation about its roots, but that is kind of the going theory.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. Yeah. And and the whole let's play things backwards. Um, I just I just I just wondered, are kids' songs just creepy? Because I know some Disney movies are The Black Cauldron.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

Um, which is a terrifying thing. And this is what I found out about that. The idea that nursery rhymes contain hidden evil messages when played backwards was created for the film. Real back masking fears emerged during the 1980s satanic panic and focused mainly on rock music, not nursery rhymes. I was like, okay. I'm I feel like I'm learning a lot through this. Like I'm dispelling things that I thought might be true. It's good. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Take the stuff in this movie with a grain of salt. It's it's very stretched and changed. They they made up a lot of lore and and stuff for this, which is fine. Uh also I just have a random note in here that's just more production like on their side of side. Oh, she also has a very quiet keyboard because she's typing and searching things so much throughout this. And I was like, you know, not so much with this podcast, but like us doing Buffalo Buffalo now, as long as we have that has taught us a lot about keyboard clicking sounds during recording.

SPEAKER_01

So well, Jerry is a keyboard warrior during recording, usually. Um this one I have over here. So I have this one for work, and it actually is is somewhat quiet. Um the one I had was much more impact, and at one point my supervisor during a meeting said, You might want to mute yourself because it sounds like you're banging on a keyboard. And I wasn't, I was just typing, trying to get notes down.

SPEAKER_03

But um because hers didn't sound that quiet, but but then it was like it's not picking up in the recording, I guess. Throughout the whole episode. You ever did you hear the new episode of Undertone this week? Yeah, it sounded like Googling things about children's songs.

SPEAKER_01

They don't blame her. I mean, she is skeptical though. She wants to look into it. So Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um now I've really got to the note about Darren, which I've talked about. Yeah, so I like her kind of trying to bail on that relationship, except the one thing that's kind of making that more complicated is she's pregnant.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. And that ties very nicely into this movie once we get to discussion about a bisoo.

SPEAKER_03

Abiza. Abisa, right? I took a pill in a biso.

SPEAKER_01

Um we all wish we could take a pill in a biza. That is a Buffalo Buffalo title. I feel like we need to find a way to make it.

SPEAKER_03

Um she does go out to this party and then comes home in the morning and her mother's on the bedroom floor, which is uh yeah, terrifying for her. But also it's like very weird. It starts this kind of because it's like she's in a coma, basically. So why is she on the floor? Why would she have gotten out of bed? So it's like the beginning of like things are weird.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And so then she notices like the statues and the drawings and like these little things that are starting to like kind of weird her out. And so she goes back and just in her own free time, now she's listening to the back masking kids songs, and so now she's got the Baba Black Sheep one going, and where she's writing it down, look and lick the blood off. And I was like, What? What is I was like, I can kinda barely maybe hear that vaguely only because I'm listening for it, but how did you get that? Yeah. And the creepy statue in her mom's room with the babies crawling up this like Mother Mary like figure.

SPEAKER_01

That's a Virgin Mary, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's very creepy.

SPEAKER_03

I don't like that. It's it's it's like uh um Dante's Inferno Virgin Mary statue. And I'm just why would her mother have this? This is terrifying. I mean, I I get it. Religious iconography is kind of unsettling for me too, in a lot of ways, but that one especially. That's yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I'm wondering, are they selling and replicating this statue to sell it online as like a prop from the movie? Probably not, because I don't know that it would be a high selly.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but all the weird things.

SPEAKER_01

I could be wrong.

SPEAKER_03

Could be. Maybe people would buy it. I know they're selling the one wish willows from Obsession, so No.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no, thank you. Chris watched that and we had a nice discussion about um yeah, about that movie as a whole and the true victims and the process of it. Yeah. It was a masterpiece, really. I mean, if you think about it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the weird stuff, the water running on its own, which classic horror movie, bad sign. And then like after it happens in the house, then it happens in the like file, the audio files. So like these all these little things that are like lining up with you know the songs and the faucets and the audio files. So yeah, it's a little spooky. Um she's starting to like notice things, and even while she's listening, she's kind of like, what's g also she keeps checking behind her, it's like, is that in here or is that in my house? Like, what's happening? Also, finding out you're pregnant and then immediately just drinking a big old cup of whiskey is a choice.

SPEAKER_01

It is, because I'm sure the doctors would frown upon it, but I could see that her brain was just kind of like, What the fuck do I do with this now?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I've got my mom dying, and we're talking about bringing a new life into the world, and I don't think I'm gonna be a good mother.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it is a lot. Yeah. Justin mentions this, like, I hope you're not drinking, and I and she's like, No, no, he doesn't even know about the pregnancy, so just like apparently there's a past there with her. They talk about it v a little bit, not much, but but yeah, so they're they're listening in, and then we get the the doll in the uh audio files, which immediately What is it about dolls, parents? I had to Stop recording uh not recording. Stop recording. Um no. I had to stop watching, I had to pause the movie real quick and just went, is that a fucking baby secret? Um, because I recognize that evil evil voice anywhere. Uh it's a hella creepy old doll from Oh god, whatever. I don't even remember what. Oh, 1960s. Um it's got a little pull string on it, and then it says the most terrifying shit in the world. And it's also just a creepy-looking baby doll.

SPEAKER_01

It is a creepy-looking doll, and I don't believe I ever had one.

SPEAKER_03

It's not the doll that they showed in the movie. Um, but it's it's the actual Baby Secret doll that that voice comes from looks different and actually somehow more terrifying than the one that they had in the movie. Um, and the reason I know about Baby Secret so much is because it's been a long-running joke on Good Mythical Morning, a YouTube series that I watch. To the point that I had now, this does come from Google AI, but I read through it and I was like, yeah, they got the gist. Um, because it gets things wrong a lot. But I was like, I have to give a rundown on the Baby Secret saga from Good Mythical Morning a little bit. Okay. I will have to find clips to show you uh after. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

I feel like I am I'm gonna be deprived if you don't. So please bring me into it.

SPEAKER_03

Good Mythical Morning GMM uh stems from an episode in 2018 that was uh featuring creepy vintage toys. And Rett and Link crowned the 1960s Mattel Pulstring Whispering Doll, Baby Secret, as number one creepiest baby doll of all time due to the unsettling moving lips and whispering phrases like don't tell mama. Uh oh my gosh. Uh and then this single episode bit exploded into a recurring multi-year running gag and even an extended cinematic universe across the mythical channel, mythical society specials, live shows that they did. Um it kind of broke down key moments. Obviously, the crowning. Uh, in 2018, Baby Secret makes her debut and wins the title of Ultimate Creepy Doll. And then in 2019, they did the High Chair Hot Seat, which was a sketch where they had the haunted doll, and then um they had uh mythical uh cast member Emily dub over and start saying even creepier things in the voice because she did a pretty good impression of it, and they would have the doll uh interview celebrity guests. The I'll show you the Jamila Jamil one is hilarious. Um And then just like throughout the years, the doll would pop up in bizarre bits, including being strapped to a Roomba or featured in outtakes from fictional events. They had like society specials, which is like their Patreon kind of thing, where they had like certain characters uh from the show get married and baby secrets like part of the wedding. Uh it was just Oh my god. And then they just keep doing these ongoing cameos where it's kind of a permanent fixture of terror and comedy on the set. Like they'll do random games and challenges where like they'll switch up and put it in different random spots as kind of like a jump scare. It's like, oh god, it's baby secret. Uh so she's kind of become a character on GMN, but uh man, it is horrifying. And so I was like, uh I heard the voice in the like audio file, the whispering. I was like, that's a fucking baby secret if I've ever heard one. I know exactly what that is.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, I did not know you were such an expert in baby secret.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

And they did not have one of those, and I do not need one. But if you're in the market and you want to find one, they do have them on eBay for under 100 bucks. Although I'm wondering why they're not like in one of the like conjuring boxes that Ed and Lorraine Warren had.

SPEAKER_03

So I had all that note, and then I continued watching the movie, and then in the audio file, Jessica calls it's a baby sleep time doll. And I was like, Yeah, you call it that, but I know what you are. I recognize that voice. Don't come at me with baby sleep time. No, that's a baby secret, and it's pure evil. Uh so it seems they took the audio from baby secret and then like put it over to the made-up doll for the movie. Uh, so yeah, definitely at some point tonight, I might have to take you down a tiny little baby secret rabbit hole and show you some of these clips.

SPEAKER_01

I think I might need to. It's quite crazy because honestly, I wish I'd watched this movie with you, just so that I could have heard your surprise or your exclamation of it being baby secret. Oh my god. That's a psychodoll. Um, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then we just, yeah, it things continue to escalate. Uh the little background ghostly light uh in the flickering lights in the room. She goes to like turn the light, and then you get the little image of like something standing behind her. Always love stuff like that.

SPEAKER_00

We've talked about that. Yeah. It's the flanagan thing. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I was gonna say, because I I know we're doing a lot of tangents with Baby Secret and podcasting, but here's another one. Uh made me think, uh, you know, as soon as I saw that, it did make me think of Hill House and how very excited I am for that tomorrow in real time as we're recording here. Um Hidden Ghosts. Yeah, because uh you know, because you actually came to one of them when you were in the city.

SPEAKER_02

I did!

SPEAKER_03

I've been doing a kind of like a round table watch party, the Flan Club. Uh so I've got a group of people that some of them watching for the first time, some of them have seen it before, but we went through Flanagan's Midnight Mass, and we would watch just each week we'd watch the episode, we'd sit for an hour and talk about it, and then re- you know, come back next week and do the next episode. So it's kind of not recording it, not like as a podcast, but just for conversations in the moment, just a group of people getting together and talking about the themes and getting really vulnerable about some stuff, and it was really cool. So we finished Midnight Mass, and so tomorrow we start The Haunting of Hill House, and I'm very excited to do that. Re-watch that because it's been quite a while.

SPEAKER_01

I love that you guys are doing that, and I'm not surprised at all that you talked them into doing Hill House like right after. Like, why stop?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and this one'll be a little different because like the majority of people had already seen Midnight Mass, so that's why we chose to do that one. Now we're going into Hill House, where unless uh Brendan has already seen it when he shows up, which just throwing out names that nobody knows about, unless you're part of this group and you're listening. Some of them are, I know some of them listen to this podcast now. Uh but as far as I know, I'm the only person who's already seen Hill House. It will be the first watch for everybody but me. So that's gonna be I get to see a bunch of people experiencing it for the first time, and I'm excited about that because that's always fun.

SPEAKER_01

Are you gonna look back at any of your podcasting notes before or just take it fresh?

SPEAKER_03

No. Well, I didn't record on Hill House. I came back on the book. Oh, that's right.

SPEAKER_01

You came in on Blind Manor, so this is pre-Strange Indeed, Pig.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Uh but yeah, I'm excited to see for first time. I do have a Hill House story to tell on that uh when we when we get to it. Uh there. I think I've told it before, which I know again, some of them listen to this, so I don't want them to get. But I'll say is um I think it's recorded, me telling the story of um because I think I even did it when we did Megan. Um but talking oh my god, why am I uh blanking on her? Violet. Talking to Violet about McGraw, yeah. Violet McGraw, her her drawing at a convention when I was like hanging out with her and doing stuff with her. And she was drawing some very interesting stuff from that show, and I was like, that's creepy.

SPEAKER_01

Good for you. Um you know what? Uh just because of that, Peg, I have decided on my own, without prompting, or any input from you, we're gonna do Oculus next week.

SPEAKER_03

We need to do more Flanagan.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Let's do Oculus next week.

SPEAKER_03

Sounds good. That's something I've actually wanted to say the past couple weeks, and then I keep forgetting, is that I was like, well, we need another movie to do. We need there's still a couple of flannigan ones we haven't done yet. So let's do it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we'll do Oculus next week. That works for me.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Anyway. Movie. Um just little things. The caretaker said I was like, Evie, get the nurse to bring you some chuck pads. It's gonna be so helpful with the cleanup process and the sheets and the bed. It's worth it. Uh yeah, the iconography looking at all the creepy stuff. And then of course she like falls asleep while on the computer looking at stuff, and then we get that kind of where she like wakes up and then has these like thoughts of you know, on the stairs, and then her mom is standing down there, and there's all this stuff. And it's like, well, that was terrifying, but it was a dream, so still maybe stop chanting things. Um that's where she's doing the uh was uh come in abizoo backwards, which it's at the end of the movie keeps saying it over and over again, and so I was like, I gotta remember that, and then I've already forgotten exactly how that sounds. It's like But yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean she's basically inviting Abizoo in.

SPEAKER_03

And then it reminded me, I was like, oh man, the files, the audio files were sent with the subject line lol, he said, and I was like, well, that's worse some now at this point. It's like whoever sent this was like, haha, now you're cursed. The haunting's on you now, get dead, l-ol. Not great.

SPEAKER_01

It's crazy. Like you wouldn't, I mean, yes, I'm a very curious person by nature, but if I received that, I would just delete it and not even give it a second thought. I wouldn't. I mean, I know there are some things that you shouldn't touch. And I did find out that Abizoo was also that name, Abizoo, was also used in a movie in 2012 called The Possession. So that may be something we can cover at some point. We have so many movies on the list.

SPEAKER_03

So many things, yes.

SPEAKER_01

And 2026 has been a banner year for horror, terror, supernatural, crazy movies. And we're barely halfway through. Like we're just over halfway through. There's so much more that's coming. Yeah. So hang on to your butts.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah, so this chanting, you said he's like asking the demon abazoo to enter. And I was like, well, fantastic. The demon who kills unborn babies, because we gotta love that right now. Uh oh, yeah. Perfect time.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. It's not, it's not good.

SPEAKER_03

Keep listening to the files. And then it was like, Wait, Jessa and Mike are going to bed at 9 p.m. I was like, I'm listening. I was like, this couple sounds like they're in their late twenties, maybe thirties, not their eighties. What are we doing?

SPEAKER_01

No. Oh my gosh. At that time, that's when my brain is waking up.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like it's saying, It's nighttime, creativity, let's move. Like it's not Same. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And so now it gets very creepy, so Justin emails the guy back, or whoever, only now, after the finals get creepy, is when he waits to respond. Like, who is that? I mean, because you get things like the crying baby that the couple don't have, and all kinds of unsettling sounds. And then gets the message back immediately that the account doesn't exist. So yes, the mailer demon. Um very fair.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then he realizes the email address that it originally came from is just abizoo backwards. Yeah. It's an great, wonderful, fantastic.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's wild. Just wild.

SPEAKER_03

Baba Black Sheep starts playing in the audio file, and that's again, it's like wait, no, that came first on their end. Like that was the random example she pulled out of thin air about kids' songs while listening to the early files. So it's like it's listening to us and changing in real time.

SPEAKER_01

Sounds a lot like AI. It's listening. You know, like on Facebook when you're talking about something and you don't go Google searching, it has no reason to, but then the next day it pulls up something.

SPEAKER_03

All of the ads on my Facebook feed are way too personal about things that I don't talk to anybody about.

SPEAKER_01

No. It doesn't make sense.

SPEAKER_03

And it's like, why am I getting all the ads for this? How did you know?

SPEAKER_01

How did you know I wanted to see that? No. Why won't you give me ads for the things that I really want to see? Because sometimes it will give me ads for stuff that like I don't need to see that anymore. That was one time I did Google to find a present for my niece. I don't need American girl stuff in my feed all day.

SPEAKER_03

But if you need shoes made, you know, there's a guy.

SPEAKER_01

There is a guy.

SPEAKER_03

Uh yeah, and then Justin keeps going down the rabbit hole himself, so now he's found documented cases of this like abysoo situation. At least a like couple, like two that he talks about, and it's like, well, yeah, that's that's worrisome to where even he's like, he wants to bail, but then for some reason Evie's like, nope, we're gonna see it through next week in a part two.

SPEAKER_01

But as if we did a part two, Pake. Like we would do a part two. We have done it before, like a double dip or a beginning and end, or something like that. We don't we don't usually split episodes like that.

SPEAKER_03

Not usually. But now we will. So thanks for listening this week. Yeah. Uh come back next week for the rest of our conversation about undertone.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Where's that feedback phone?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I I do also so they end the episode and they're like, okay, we'll make it a part two. And I do like at least the outro that they do, uh, kind of the tagline or log line. Don't be afraid of the dark. Be afraid of the silence. With that hard cut to the silence. I was like, okay, that's actually a killer closing. I think that's a good one. I gotta give them props. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. I mean, I am very partial too. If you've got to run it, you better run for your lives. But that that that's pretty cool too.

SPEAKER_03

And I was like, I'm skeptical of a lot of their methods, but after hearing that closing line, I'm subscribing to the podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Of course. It's amazing. If you get hooked on it, I'm sure there are some great ones out there. And if you're listening to this episode and you want to share them because you like the supernatural stuff and you listen to some podcasts that are interesting, send them in to us so we can share them with our listeners and we'll add it to feedback. I thought the calls that came in were really strange, like Mike and Jessa's neighbor saying the couple was found dead with bags over their heads and baby drawings covering the walls, and Jessa was pregnant.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh and Mary calling, asking for Mary, and that's the name that Evie was going to give the baby.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. Yeah, a lot of really creepy stuff. Because yeah, stuff keeps like creepy. This movie did a really great job with the escalation of creepy. Yes. To the point that, you know, when she's up there checking on her mom and like the bathroom light clicks on, and then she tur goes to close the door, and then her mom sits up behind her. And it's very much where I'm like audibly just going, no. No, no. I'm like waving my I I scold the movie for that. I like wave my finger at my TV screen and go, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no. No, I don't know. Don't like that. No, no, no, no. That's very Michael Myers to sit up like that, okay? It's very Michael Myers. It is not preferred.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And then she just tries to go to bed on her own. I was like, I could never sleep with her. You know, her podcast methods are weird, but her sleeping methods. This color-changing lamp, and she puts in the earbuds, and there's this voice talking to her, trying to be.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, meditation, yes. For me, I'm like-tried that?

SPEAKER_03

No. And I it would keep me awake and miserable all night. I love that you say that. The light and the meditation. I need darkness and I need silence.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. And I have tried, okay? When I stay in hotels or Airbnbs, whatever room I'm in for my nighttime like sleep room, I make sure that every curtain or something, blanket that can be over the windows is over the windows. Yes. And I have a little ray nap on my phone that I play brown noise that is just- I feel like even that would keep me awake. Even like Does the air conditioner keep you awake?

SPEAKER_03

I don't have an well, I mean, I have my AC in my apartment. Like that's but it's not honestly. That's the one thing because it drowns out the my upstairs neighbor with his TV on, which we're loud. A little bit. So there's that. Oh yeah, no, that AC, but like like a fan, like a blowing like AC or fan, like that. I could never do that. That will keep me awake. That's too loud. But like, I guess like the into like the main regular AC is a sound that I've grown so accustomed to that that's fine.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Same way as I live right off of a highway, like highway cars and honking and those sounds, I can sleep through those because they've become I've become so accustomed to them.

SPEAKER_01

You do get used to it.

SPEAKER_03

That's the natural soundscape.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you do get used to it. Like for a while when I was in an apartment with my brother, I had the ferrets in my room. I got used to hearing them in my room. And so when I moved into my house and put them in a different room, it was real weird to not hear scratching or like clicking of any kind. It was so quiet.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I am wondering that if I do end up buying a house and moving out of this apartment, because what I have in mind of where I want to move to, it's like a neighborhood back further in a neighborhood away from main roads a little bit. Will I actually have to take some time to adjust to the silence versus the like traffic sounds a little bit? I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

You might. Yeah. It you might. You might have to.

SPEAKER_03

But I know as much as I mean, because like I spend the night at work just the with the care job that I do. I actually s sleep at the the house that I I work at. Um and it's on a small little road. It's a lake house back on a back road. And so it's dead silent at night, and I sleep great over there better than I do at home. So maybe not. I think I love that.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I have run the rain app before just to drown out people snoring because I don't want to hear it. Or um because sometimes the the earplugs aren't enough. Like I can still hear the noise. And you know sometimes you want to get out of bed and go over and move the person so they'll stop. I have.

SPEAKER_03

I have done that. Like it was my when it was my brother, I could do that.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, it's so And you're rolling over now. I can't take this. Because you shouldn't wear earplugs all the time, prolonged. Like it's not good for your ears. And so I would try not to do that.

SPEAKER_03

Speaking of not snoring, but we have sleep praying uh coming from her mom. Which is a little yeah, strange. And then it's again this tying into because then the caller's talking about the like Hail Mary's and and praying. And we have that interesting moment where she's like saying, I killed my mother, even though her mom's not dead. But like, yeah, I didn't understand that. It's it's this guilt part of like because she keeps going back and listening to that voicemail from her mom when she was well. Yeah. About like inviting her to church, inviting her to mass, and like, you know, it's like she used to ha, you know, when I was a kid, she would come and pray with by my bedside, and then now that I'm adult, she wanted me to come and pray with her, and then I didn't because I was too busy and I didn't you know, and then so it's almost this guilt thing of like Yeah. Well, it's because of me that my mom's in a coma and dying now because I didn't give her the love or attention or didn't pray with her and didn't I think that's what that was really meant to convey is it's a lot of internal guilt that uh Evie is carrying there.

SPEAKER_01

I think so. I think she wishes that she had done things differently, and she's kind of blaming herself, but I don't believe that her going to pray with her mother was going to keep her mother alive. Like I don't believe that.

SPEAKER_03

You all but like people always have those, like, well, what if, what if, what if you know I should have said this or I should have done that when when the loved one is so yeah, it yeah, it makes sense. Also, she kind of goes a little unhinged in some pla when she's talking to Justin, just like, okay, I think we should stop, and it's like, no, we should keep going. It's like almost like there is something compelling her. To keep there is this like demonic connection to her that is like compelling, like and it's using her skepticism as it's like she starts laughing at inappropriate times where it's like it's all so stupid and silly, so let's keep going. And it's like, no, something obviously is attaching to her, and it's yeah. A little creepy. She's doing the crazy crayon drawing in black and red, you know, in the style of Dalton Lambert or Victoria.

SPEAKER_01

Tammy from Yellow Jackets.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Victorian Lily from Mama, uh Sarah in Children of the Corn.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, or even movies we haven't covered yet, and you know, Aiden in uh The Ring or Anne and the others. Um things like that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's very much um taking over her and to the point where when it's time to play number 10, Justin doesn't want to do it, and he ends up doing it because she is determined. No, we have to finish this.

SPEAKER_03

I know she he's actually kind of worried that like, what are we doing to our listeners if they're hearing this? Like, are we gonna curse them? What's he's kind of bought into this is like maybe he has a you know, maybe you shouldn't listen to this episode. He pulled a Jerry, don't listen. And but he's unsure about it, but then because of her, he's like, but we're still gonna do it, I guess. Fuck it. Let's let's see what happens.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And he's helpless on the phone while all these things are happening after. You know, they and they they've had all these calls and things going on, and it's it's just a lot, you know, for for her to, you know, she's been facing all of this. And I think sometimes I think is this just a manifestation of all of her guilt and the pain and now the stress of she's pregnant and she's in a relationship she probably doesn't want to be in, and all of these things just manifesting as this. You know, this is what it is, but I don't think that's the case.

SPEAKER_03

No. Justin's fully yeah, I see. I mean thematically for the movie, it is definitely a manifestation or you know kind of a a stand-in for those things. That is the metaphor we're going for, I believe. Uh yeah. But but yeah, but it within the movie, you know, this seems to be very real in this movie universe. Yeah, the the callers, like you said, with the guy who knew Mike and Jessa, and then this other one was like, Yeah, we had this lady in the building that would listen to children's music backwards, and then she killed her baby. So, like these connective tissues.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then yeah, when they're on that last file, and then those yeah, calls, uh, you know, the she's listening. Even on the like the file, you know, she's listening. I have to warn her. And it's like she's talking about Evie. Um and then yeah, they're like, I'd like to speak to Mary. I'd like to speak to Mary, I'd like to speak to Mary.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then even I'd like to speak to Mary, very deep voice at the end. I know. Uh yeah, and you pointed out that's what really kind of sets Evie off because she's like, that's the name I just told my mother I would give my child. Yeah. This is getting very real. And then the last one, or second, you know, you shouldn't have listened to all of them. You shouldn't have listened, yeah. And then Abby, the call Abby, who's thinking about I I want to stop how do I stop the crying? I'm I'm no good. What do I do? And it's like Abby who? Abby zoo.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. That's what I was thinking. You know, and they try to talk her, you know, they try to talk Abby out of killing the baby. She they're they're trying to get through to her and telling her she's not bad, and it it doesn't really get through.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and then it of course when it ends, and then they're freaking out when it happens, and then the Abby starts laughing, and then that's when things start really getting natural and crazy in the house with the TV coming like turning on with this video, and uh the kitchen, Dinette, she walks through the chairs are on the ceiling and there's stuff strewn about. I was like, yeah, this kitchen looks like it's been properly poltergeisted.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, absolutely, 100%. Another movie we need to cover. But I feel like we have gone so far down the supernatural route this season that we kind of have to step out of it and cover some other things.

SPEAKER_03

But yeah, just the whole ending is so intense, and it just kind of all hits you at once with the drawings on the walls kind of appearing out of nowhere, and then going upstairs, and the mother's up, out of bed, and then walking backwards towards her, and then you just get this cut to black, and then Justin, I'm so cold, which is in the audio that she heard her own voice, and then the voice of just repeating Abizou, you know, come come in abyso backwards over and over again, just going into credits with the music. I was like, that was something that's memorable.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's so ambiguous. If you think about it, this is kind of this is kind of what I think so things pass to Evie because they listen to all the recordings, and Jessa was the last victim, and Evie is the new victim. Um Evie also being pregnant and being uncertain about if she wants to be a mother kind of fits into uh Abizoo or Abizo's um focus on well, you don't want the baby, okay, we'll get rid of it, because that's you know one of the stories behind Abizoo. Um and Evie's also going through this whole process of taking care of her mother who is dying. And so she's really, really vulnerable right now. And we don't really get to see what happens to Evie. It's so ambiguous. All we know is what we're hearing. And with everything else, it's just like I've gotta I gotta question it. Like, what am I hearing and what's real and with that ending? Like, I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Doesn't sound good.

SPEAKER_01

No. And I didn't get a chance to go and watch any or read anything about like what the ending is supposed to be. So those are real those are just really my thoughts as far as I think it was really ambiguous. It's not it's not unlike movies that we've covered before that have ended in a way where we're not really sure what happened. And you can try to build something in your head. I don't think she goes off to live with her boyfriend happily ever after with a baby.

SPEAKER_03

No, I don't think so.

SPEAKER_01

So I'm not really sure what happens to her.

SPEAKER_03

I can assume it probably has something to do with drawings of dead babies on the wall and a bag on at the bottom of the stairs.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

Would make sense.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

I think you hear tumbling downstairs sounds going on.

SPEAKER_01

I think Nina Carey crushed it. Um it was great to get to see her in a role that was outside Handmaid's Tale. And I love the little nuances like her listening to the audio files for the first time when they're recording and recording the actual reaction. I think that's fantastic. It's a great little nod to podcasting and how sometimes when you're listening to feedback that you get from someone and they've sent you an audio file, you have no idea what it's gonna say. And sometimes it can be perfectly fine, and other times it can be something that you know you're gonna have to edit. So yeah. I mean, you just don't know. You just don't know. I feel like we went on more tangents in this episode than we have in any other episode we've done. There were a lot of tangents, but I think they all tied to what we were talking about.

SPEAKER_03

That is the feedback bone we need, but that's not the usual found at most.

SPEAKER_01

Um, I I don't like this pink. What's going on?

SPEAKER_03

Let me go answer that and get that to stop real quick.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. You do that.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, we do have some feedback here. One piece, in fact, from the ever-reliable Catherine, um, who says about this one Undertone is a movie I'm happy I watched once and appreciate everything it accomplished, but I'm in no rush for a rewatch. I had the same feeling about The Monster, 2016, from Run for Your Lives' first season. Wow, throwback. I like that. Uh the depression of caring for a dying parent, the guilt of that parent dying even though uh uh even when you're not at fault, and then throw in some demons that cause mothers to kill their kids, really rough plot. But I was really impressed with the way it was shot. There are some great similarities with Pontypole. Hearing what characters are experiencing rather than directly showing it increased the tension for a lot of scenes. I've been following the trial of Lindsay Clancy, so child slash infant death and the neglected mental health of moms hit pretty hard with Undertone. I wanted more of a focus on the demon, but the lack of details only made it scarier. I'm looking forward to the upcoming Chit Chat episode. It'll be a great palette cleanser after Undertone.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know, Peg, will it? I feel like we got kind of deep on that episode.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. But I think it was good in a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Uh yeah, so we're kind of breaking as you know, we talked about that, and that's coming up in a little bit. Is that uh the phones are a couple of weeks, so yeah. That comes up in like a couple weeks. I was just making a double check, it's not like next week. So we've still got like a few weeks uh for that episode, but it has been recorded because that's just how already, because that's how time works on on this podcast with things uh but yeah. Um so we've got that coming up in a few episodes, but that'll be fun. Uh yeah. I was trying to think if there's something else I was trying to say, but not really.

SPEAKER_01

We really appreciate it.

SPEAKER_03

We absolutely do. And of course, speaking of sharing the love, you know that I gotta go ahead and share what's going on in the podcast universe around us and beyond Podcastica universe, even. Uh a lot of great stuff for you to check out um on Podcastica week to week. Uh but yeah, this week, definitely uh check out the Walking Dead cast, as Ben and Alex are continuing their coverage of The Walking Dead Dead City, season three. We get episode six up this week, so you can go ahead and check that out if you're watching along there and listening along. A great way to do that. And then, of course, the newest podcast, um, if you're watching HBO's Lanterns, which I'm trying to catch up on. I've got one episode left. Um it's been really good though. Uh I'm really enjoying it, and I'm excited for the next one. Uh but yeah, definitely check out Casting Light, the new show over there. Jason, Kirk, and Jim covering it there. So you can get your lanterns coverage over on Casting Light. And then outside of Podcastica, our good friends over at TV Podcast Industries also doing lanterns coverage over on their podcast. You can check that out as well. And then if you want more of me and Daphne, then you can listen to our other podcast, the Buffalo Buffalo Podcast, with our friends Jeff and Jerry, where we're just friends, hanging out, being goofy. It's pretty much what it is. Playing games, trying to make each other laugh, or cry something.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. Tormenting Daphne is the number one priority of the other three Buffalo. It's just how it goes. I've embraced it now, or rather, just accepted it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. It's inevitable. Just like buckle in and and let that storm pelt you, because it's not going away.

SPEAKER_01

No, it's not. I'm gonna spend a few days with the three of you in just a couple weeks, and that should be interesting.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely. But yeah, so you got a few things to check out this week, but then you know next Friday you can come right back here to Run for Your Lives. We'll have a new episode for you to check out. And I'm excited for this one. This should be a fun one. Daphne, what are we doing next week?

SPEAKER_01

Well, when a woman tries to prove that an antique Mira's supernatural powers caused her family's tragedy, it forces her and her brother to revisit their childhood nightmare. We are discussing Mike Flanagan's 2013 film, Oculus.

SPEAKER_03

That's right. We are returning to the Church of Flanagan, where I worship regularly. Uh, but we're back on the we're back there on this podcast to cover because we've just got a few Flanagan movies that we haven't covered, and we need to fix that. So we're gonna get one of them next week.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. And with that, we've reached the end of another terrifying episode of Run for Your Lives. Thanks everyone for listening. I'm Daphne.

SPEAKER_03

And I'm Peggy.

SPEAKER_01

And if you have to run, you better run for your lives.

SPEAKER_03

Bye-bye.
