You're listening to the Run for Your Lives Podcast.
SPEAKER_02Hey everyone, welcome to the show. I'm Daphne.
SPEAKER_00And I'm Pake.
SPEAKER_02And this is the Run for Your Lives podcast.
SPEAKER_00And this episode is brought to you by The Wheel, and it commands us to do its will, its wheel will. And the Wheel Will this week is to cover the post-apocalyptic horror film The Silence, directed by John R. Leonetti and released April 10th, 2019.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02I saw this actually a while back.
SPEAKER_00This is one that I've wanted to watch for seven years since it came out. Uh that's always been on my radar. I was like, oh, that I that sounds interesting. I want to check it out. And then it's just kind of been in the background. And so honestly, while watching it, I was like, finally, I'm watching this movie, because I probably never would have if it wasn't for this. So like I've wanted to, so it's good to get it out of the way. Good to watch it.
SPEAKER_02Well, we've always said that if I feel like I need you to watch a movie, we need to cover it because then it will make sure that you actually do watch it.
SPEAKER_00And I guess it goes both ways now sometimes too.
SPEAKER_02So Yeah, it does. I feel like Jeff is is making a list of movies that we have to watch when we're together in a month because he can't believe that you haven't seen certain ones already. You know, hearing John Arleonetti's name again so soon, I was not expecting because we did cover his movie Annabelle just like a month ago, I think. He's also been involved as director of photography and the insidious franchise. Like he's he's definitely a regular now when it comes to Run for your Lies because he's been involved in a lot of our movies. A name known. Yes, absolutely. Well, we will kick this off with some production notes. It was filmed in Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. I've actually been to both of those cities. It's based on the 2015 novel The Silence by Tim Leben. The silence was released internationally in theaters and grows 2.3 million in the US. It was only released on Netflix. Movie has been compared to a quiet place, and the truth is both were filming at the same time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I have a little bit of information on that, but we'll get to that in a minute.
SPEAKER_02We definitely will. It's 90 minutes long. Paik, give us a synopsis.
SPEAKER_00Alright. When the world is under attack from terrifying creatures who hunt their human prey by sound. The Abbott family must wait, no, no, that's the wrong. Um Allie Andrews and her family seek refuge in a remote haven.
SPEAKER_02Um Yeah, um, sounds very familiar.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. We did okay, so we have covered A young deaf girl and her little brother and her two parents have to trek across the country to wait. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02There are some similarities for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um we've covered a quiet place one and two. We've covered And day one. And day one. And this is what came up on the wheel. It was my little surprise last week when we were recording to throw this out there and let the wheel pick for us because we hadn't done it in a while. So I felt like we needed to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's always good to go. I've got so much on that wheel that it needs to be done. So Yeah. Stuff comes out.
SPEAKER_02So uh yeah. Chris has been watching some horror movies this week because he's on vacation, and I ask him, okay, was that a good one? And he'll tell me if it's good or if I would like it, because those are two different things. Because sometimes a good one I may not like because I don't like a certain style.
SPEAKER_00And sometimes you might like one that's not a good one.
SPEAKER_02No, that's never happened.
SPEAKER_00Not saying it's not good is always a bad thing, because sometimes campy and and cheesy is fun.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't have to be good, but it can be fun.
SPEAKER_02You know what happens on YouTube? I'll be searching for different things, and these lists come up, and I watch them, and I think, oh, I forgot about that movie, and then I go off to Tubi to watch it.
SPEAKER_00Doesn't have to be I love Thanksgiving. It's a bad movie, but it's fun.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think we might go see Buddy, which is that new one that's based off Barney, or something like that. It's getting really good reviews.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So, I mean, why not? So we'll see. We'll definitely see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so as we we cover this movie, and this is another one that like for it's all following. They they split up a little bit from time to time, but barely. So instead of breaking down characters that are all together. As we we've been doing more and more recently, is just going, you know, notes chronologically as I take them throughout the movie. Uh and I'm I'm I'm good with that. I like being able to do that instead of trying to well, let's pick apart this person and then this person. We've we found like our our style can evolve where it needs to be.
SPEAKER_02Yes. And it it can adapt based on the movie because next week, if we cover a film where it's character driven by multiple characters who have their own arcs, we can go back to that and focus on it that way. But we're not trying to force coverage of a movie into a style that doesn't work well for that movie. We analyze the movie and we'll text each other and say, okay, I think we'll do it this way. Because that's just being smart.
SPEAKER_00Smart and also a little lazy in a good way. Because then I can go, well, when I'm done taking notes, I don't have to take the extra 30 minutes to compile them all into different sections. I'm just done.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. And I sent you the note this time and said, I don't think we need to compile these. I think we can tackle it this way because the family unit was really together. There were other characters around, not many. And so a note or two about some of them, fine. But why force it into something else? There's no reason to do that. And we've I don't think we've gotten lazy. I just think that we've gotten really smart about how we tackle some movies, and I think we're doing what we need to in order to have a good discussion, and that's what this is about.
SPEAKER_00It's perfect. We tell ourselves what we need to now get to.
SPEAKER_02Exactly, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, and so yeah, just jumping in and tackling this one. I I was honestly very excited to do this one. I haven't seen it before, and I but I was curious, like, okay, am I gonna want to rip this one apart, or am I gonna what do I feel like? But I was like, no, I'm gonna be nice and I'm gonna give it its fair shake. Because the cast is good, and maybe, you know, I don't immediately go in with the we have a quiet place at home mentality. Maybe, you know, let's just take it for its own merit and see what it is, uh, without comparing too much. Now I did do some comparisons, but I wanted to look into the uh origin a little bit of this one versus a quiet place because they are so similar. And I didn't go too deep into it because I didn't want to spoil stuff for myself. I hadn't watched the movie yet. Um but what I did find, and this comes from sketchingdetails.com, and they had an article called The Silence, A Quiet Place, and the Subtle Art of Coincidence. And so the little blurb that I took, I didn't go through the whole thing and take all of it, but just kind of the short and easy version of it. Uh Brian Woods and Scott Beck began uh they claim they began writing their treatment in 2012 or 2013 for a quiet place, I think. And then um Tim Lebin's The Silence came out in 2015. So they had the so a Quiet Place script treatment was already happening, but that's in secret, nobody knows about that. Then this Tim Lebin novel comes out in 2015 while that's being worked on and then comes out uh by 2016, because a quiet place is optioned for production, so the novel is out, then a quiet place starts getting so it's already been worked on, so it's not even like they were copying this novel because they had been working on this for a few years. Uh 2018, A Quiet Place is released in the theaters, and the silence had already been optioned for a film adaptation of the novel that had come out three years later. So it's to say that, like, well, this is copying a quiet place, it's like, well, actually, it's a coincidence. It's a coincidence because A Quiet Place did come out first, but the novel version of this came out before A Quiet Place, but they also didn't steal it from The Silence because they had been working on their screenplay before that book came out. So it just they ran alongside each other at the same time in different ways. This came out in 2019, the same year that part two of A Quiet Place had been announced for the next for 2020. So there's all of this, they just kind of happen to coincide parallel with two similar ideas, which we have come across that before on this very podcast.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_00To the director and screenplay writer about that, with M. R. Carey, my favorite author. Because again, the girl with all the gifts was his novel that then got turned into a movie, which obviously gained a lot of comparisons, or garnered a lot of comparisons, with The Last of Us, with whole cordyceps, fungus, zombie type thing. And it was a similar thing. It was he was like, Well, actually, I started writing the book before the video game came out, and then the video game happened as as the book came out, and then the screenplay had already been written for the movie, and so it's just these like coincidences of things that are very similar that were just thought of wholly separate from each other.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Happened to come out about the same time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and the thing is, these studios don't want to talk to each other and say, hey, we're doing this, because no one wants to spoil something that they're working on behind the scenes. And so it is truly possible for companies to develop these films or TV series without anyone really knowing that something else similar is being built somewhere else. Like it is, it's just what happens. We've seen similar types of movies, not to this degree, but going back even to '98 with Armageddon and Deep Impact being similar.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Plus, there was a volcano and Dante's Peak. So it's similar themes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So that way, just to give that credit and that credence to the silence that, like, if people are jumping on here, kind of like we even do a little bit before looking into it, of like, because we we joked about it, I think, even like the last week's episode when we spun the wheel, and you're like, oh, the the a quiet place movie. You know, like and yeah, because it's easy without that background to look at this with just the timing of when it came out, to go like, oh, a quiet place came out, it was really a big deal, and so they capitalized and copied it. And so it just give them the benefit of being like, actually, no, it just the coincidence of them parallel running this stuff back and forth side by side. This is based off of a novel that actually came out before a quiet place, but both have been worked on. It's yeah, a whole thing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it is a whole thing. It is it is separate, it is unique in some ways, it has similar things. Like there are similar parts of it. I started making a list and then I didn't add to it, but just some of the things, like we have two teenage daughters that are hearing impaired also going through a s a certain level of pain. We had the mom from a quiet place giving birth to a baby in a bathtub. And in this movie, we had the mom getting bitten by one of the vesps and scr and screaming. Like it's it's there's there are similarities. I will say I do believe the creature work on A Quiet Place was better.
SPEAKER_00Oh, absolutely. Clearly, they had a bigger budget for a quiet place, too. Um with this one is the CGI. Does not hold up in a lot of places. Uh it's not great. The creature design itself of the Vesps, when they can just focus on one, is actually really cool. I like the creature design. This you it very much puts across prehistoric bat who evolved over a millennia trapped in a pitch black cave that then evolved and adapted to not have or need eyesight. So it you the design is great. It's just when you get a whole bunch of them that they're trying to CGI together into a swarm, it's a little rough sometimes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think the the close-up stuff of the like the models that they used, those were okay. It was when they were doing the CGI. Or like the deer in front of the car.
SPEAKER_00Deer are always impossible to CGI, I've learned from so many different things.
SPEAKER_02They are. Um, but they they worked really hard on these models. They researched cave dwelling creatures, animals, because they wanted this particular look to be something that had evolved underground without having any light. They don't need a lot of light, they don't need any light to survive, they don't need a lot of food, they hunt very aggressively based on sounds, like they are on it, even the littlest sound can like cause them to stir a little bit. And I read in one article that they wanted the they wanted the design to blend features from bats, reptiles, and birds. And I think that they succeeded on that in every way. I just the CGI was just not good.
SPEAKER_00But but yeah, and again, it's unfortunate the timing and the coincidences of a lot of things, but it these those things serve this kind of story so well is yeah, having that like the the silence, uh you know, but having to be like quiet, those little sounds, and like the way that they're so attuned to those sounds, and then it creates that just tension that builds around every single moment of the movie, which is nice. But then even yeah, the family dynamics. I was like, Yeah, the coincidences are a little wild, you know, this suburban family with a tween son and his older deaf sister. Uh but this family didn't have a really young child that died, and instead they have the kid's grandma, so that's totally different. Um Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We got very little of the backstory in a quiet place, like what their life was really like for a longer period of time. In this case, we got to actually see some of that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We got to see Allie, like not in school, but like outside of and coming home from school in her life.
SPEAKER_00I was like, oh, it's early, but I'm putting in my vote for first victim uh right now, please. Dick bag high schooler who's making fun of her behind her back.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Vote submitted. Um then we never saw him again, but uh unfortunately uh we didn't get it.
SPEAKER_02Well, maybe he was one of the carcasses on the ground that had been You can only hope.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh I hate I hate stuff like that. I hate bullying of any kind. Um I really liked her boyfriend. We didn't see very much of him, but he was so nice to her, and she's like, Well, my parents will never let me drive.
SPEAKER_00He says, Well then I'm just gonna not boyfriend probably by the end of the movie officially, but that was like the whole thing. It's just like he's not my boyfriend. It's like not yet. And we're like, oh god, you know. And I I did love the the scene of the father of Hugh like coming in and kind of that little, you know, just friendly ribbing about it, you know, it's just like, well, tell me. I was like, I'm your father, I need to know. Let me know everything. And she's like so annoyed, but then like she's just like, Yes, he's learning signing and he's doing this, and then he was just like, Well, I like him already. You know, I'm like, Me too. I also like him already. He's a very sweet boy. Uh I hope nothing terrible happens to him, please.
SPEAKER_02I know. All I can think is sh, you know, she doesn't she doesn't have a lot. She lost her peering a couple of years ago in a car accident that killed her grandparents, which were Hugh's parents. And Hugh and Kelly, they they're very protective. Like, Hugh doesn't want her to go away to college, he wants her to stay relatively close. He doesn't think she's ready for that. And her mom doesn't really want her having a boyfriend. And I I just got this impression that she's like, well, I hope he wasn't kissing you. And I just got this impression of you you can't keep her a baby forever, and you've got to let her have somewhat of a normal life. You if she is going to be looking at and choosing a school, she's gotta be 16 or 17. To not expect her to have a boyfriend, that's that's kind of naive, I think. And and to discourage it, I think is also not fair. Because when your son gets to be that age, are you gonna discourage him from having a girlfriend? I don't think so. I just don't get that feeling. But I I liked that Hugh was he uh he understood Allie more. Like he was protective of her, but I got the impression that he also let her be a teenage kid, like not so strict, but the mom, even with the grandmother and the smoking, when Allie goes out to talk to her and she just says, you know, I'll I'll be grounded if I if she catches me. I don't think that was a joke. I feel like her daughter was gonna freak out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they don't spell it out exactly, but I'm assuming the grandmother is suffering from and dying from like lung cancer, so it is. Makes sense to be like, you shouldn't be smoking, but then you can take it from like the grandma from Lynn's point of view and be like, well, it's already killing me, so why the fuck does it matter?
SPEAKER_02You know, honestly, let me have if she's already at that stage, let her have something in her life that makes her happy. It no, I don't agree with smoking, but she deserves to ha to enjoy her days, and if that makes her happy, then okay.
SPEAKER_00So I do like that moment in the car where Hugh is like, you know, give me your lighter, and then Kelly in the moment she doesn't smoke, and like the whole family just looks at her like oh you sweet summer child. Oh, you were fooled? We uh okay, well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it made me honestly, the whole thing with the smoking made me think of back when my dad was going through um his uh MS diagnosis, and he'd been diagnosed for a while, and he was trying different remedies because it's what you do, you try different things. And it was at a time when marijuana was not legal in Maine. Um And I don't think it was legal anywhere. It was still very much a taboo thing. I don't think it is as now is now as much. I think it depends on where you live.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um but um I said at one point, if marijuana would have made my dad feel better, I would have lit the joint for him. Like I would have done it because it's what you want to do. But also, on the flip side of that, my dad was a lobster fisherman and he went out on his boat, and he went out there longer than he probably should have. Because physically, getting in and out of the boat and getting to the boat, it was not easy. You've got to let people have something that brings them joy. And I think from my dad, that's what it was going to his boat. And I think you know, I side with the grandmother. I think that she should get to do it. And that sounds bad when you think about it, but I just think that when you don't have a lot of life left in you anyway, and you know the end is coming, I just feel like you should maybe not have to follow every rule to the letter.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
SPEAKER_00And then it's like, no, we're gonna go on a 15-minute tangent. But I love that we do that here.
SPEAKER_02Oh, me too. Me too. It's just funny because we're recording another podcast after this one with Jeff and Jerry, and so we told them a certain time, and I'm hoping that we stick to that, but we'll see.
SPEAKER_00We'll see what happens. Um But yeah, some of the stuff that you know is different. Again, it's not like they were like, uh change the answers on the homework so it doesn't look like we copied. It's not that, so we're we're good. But but I was like, well, instead of space, then we get you know, the origin of this threat is ancient buried Appalachian horror, which that's fun. I like that.
SPEAKER_02Uh you know, this was my thought after the opening. We never seem to think about the things that get released when we go exploring or poking around anywhere.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02And that was the situation. No, I feel like we should explore. I just think people need to be a little more prepared for anything that could go wrong. But they were poking around and I mean, honestly, I wanted to say poking around where they shouldn't be, but I don't necessarily believe it was a place they shouldn't be exploring. It's just that bad things seem to happen when we're doing that.
SPEAKER_00Right. Leave it alone and put the thing back where you open.
SPEAKER_02Um you can't put what is it? Let's see. What is it that you can't put it back in?
SPEAKER_00Put the vests back in the co uh cave hole. You can't?
SPEAKER_02No, you can't. You can't. You can't. Once you've opened Pandora's box, you can't put everything back inside it.
SPEAKER_00So that's it. But yeah, I I do like that the pacing was good. It's a short, it's an hour and a half. So pacing is good. We rock through it pretty, you know, everything builds up. We don't have a lot of time to like wait for all hell to break loose. I do you know me, I love the little details. So there's this, you know, moment when when Jude, the the son, turns the TV back on to play his video game. It's muted, and the news is on, and there's just the little bottom ticker with, you know, something about aircraft being brought down and stuff. So like just those little things, if you notice, you're like, okay, things are happening in the background and we're bu we're building to it.
SPEAKER_02Already. Already it's going down.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and so that it doesn't take too long to for things to be underway, so to speak. Uh, because Rob sends Ally a video of like the creatures, these vesps. Uh, it was hard to make out, so it just kind of looks like a giant swarm of bats around a fire out on a highway or something. But then immediately, like, middle of the night, things have gotten much worse, and they're watching the news, and they're like already that like people have realized that like you need to be quiet. The creatures react to sound, don't make noise, the people, you know. And it's just like, alright, we're off the running. We don't need to take too long to build everything up and explain everything. Like, this is what it is. Here we are. We're in the plot. Let's go.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00And so, with the national recommendation being to stay in your homes, the Andrews family immediately loads up their stuff into the car and drives away.
SPEAKER_02Uh which I think I think that was the right idea. Because if you think about if you think about the Vesps and how they were drawn to sound, immediately they're going to go to a highly populated, more noisy area and then branch out from there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Which makes sense. Yeah, cities, major population areas. So they're going somewhere more secluded, which makes sense. Although we see like their house, like they're outside of the city in a pretty decently quiet suburb. Like maybe it would have been okay, but who knows? Who knows? Because by the end, like I think the swarming is it doesn't matter where you are. They're just there. There's a lot of them.
SPEAKER_02You learn later on that going north where it's cold is a good idea. See, as I said, Pig, New England.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, that's where they were. Or at least they were in the Northeast. So they were in like the New York, Massachusetts area.
SPEAKER_02So That is true. That is true. Um Yeah. I didn't understand the leaving the house thing. But then after what happened to her boyfriend Rob and his family, like his parents getting killed.
SPEAKER_00Because he lived close enough by that like he would walk her home from school.
SPEAKER_02So I don't believe it was the right idea for them to stay there. I think they had to leave. And they had good ideas in theory. They had um Hugh's childhood friend Glenn.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I liked Me too.
SPEAKER_00Is this movie gonna make top movies of the year at the end for the Riffle Awards? No, probably not. Is Glenn gonna have maybe a shot at side character? Possibly. We'll see.
SPEAKER_02We'll see. We've had a really good season, Peg. There's a lot of great picks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But yeah, Glenn was great. And I was trying to leave fair because I was like, okay, so Glenn works with Hugh, or even for Hugh. So I was like, where does he get all this firepower? I was like, when they're loading up to leave, and he's like, I have all these guns. And it's like, what? Where did that come from? And there's like, of course, 12-year-old Jude is like so stoked to ride along with gunslinger Glenn. He's like, hell yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Right up his alley. And he's like, yes.
SPEAKER_02He's gonna ride with the real life Arthur Morgan.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And yeah, they're driving away. And I like then just as they're like on that, like, you know, overpass, kind of on the way out, and you can see the skyline of New York being bombarded. And I was like, how many of those things were in that cave? The mass amount of them descending down. I was like, that's scary. Like, holy crazy.
SPEAKER_02Well, they do reproduce pretty quickly. Well, and they use you as a human, as a husk to incubate the eggs, which oh god, it just made me think at the mist and some of the other movies we've covered on this podcast.
SPEAKER_00Oh, there's so so many. This movie is a ton of favorites of the genre that were all thrown in a blender. And that's not a complaint or a criticism. I love being reminded of other stuff that I love. So it's like a quiet place, obviously, yes, but also the descent with the cave and these creatures, the way they look, this like kind of like subterranean monstrosity. Uh, and then we get, yeah, you like you said, the mist and stuff like that. And then we get the scene with the lady and her baby in the subway and the tunnels, and immediately I'm in Cloverfield.
SPEAKER_02Yes. That's true. I I for had forgotten about that part, and it made me so sad because all I could think is, yes, when things like this happen, this is what people do. In movies, no, in real life too. There are instances where people are incredibly cruel. They may not put a person off a subway with a baby so a a bat monster could kill them, but they do heinous things. And so this is not just in this movie. The the shit happens everywhere. So it's rough.
SPEAKER_00Talking about Glenn, uh Uncle Glenn, which I like that we got like the background on that. There's like not blood uncle, bond uncle. Uh, which those can be even more reliable, tighter, and more important in some situations. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_02I it's friends are the family you pick for your for yourself. Like you have blood-related family, but when you meet people, there are certain ones that become more than friends. They become more important to you. And it they are like family because of how they treat you and mutual respect you have for each other. Like it people become important. You don't even know either. I think sometimes you meet someone and you're like, Oh, you know, they're a really good friend, and then they become really important, and you wake up and you say, I don't know how that happened. But it did, and so I think you just really click with people, and I like that they explained that. I like that he had the firepower. I was not happy when he was killed off so soon.
SPEAKER_00No, but we got a lot of badassness from him. I mean, we see him at the gas station, like he has their back in that big way, is we have this armed carjacker, and he just drops him. No question, and then this guy's got the gall to be like, please don't leave me here. Please take me with you. These things are getting me. I was like, fuck around, find out. Yeah. Sucks to suck, dude.
SPEAKER_02You should have approached it that way in the first place. You should have talked to them like people and not treated it like I've got a take from someone else. Why do we always have to jump to that? In a crazy situation, it's no, I want to take what you have so I can be okay and fuck you. I'm not gonna, you know, I don't want to go with you, I just want to take what you have. No, I don't think that it's supposed to work out in a good way for you if that's how you think. I think you you have to think about the bigger picture and humanity and not be such a dick. Let's be real.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they drive off from that and head back down the road. But I guess it shakes them a little bit because we get poor little dude, the kid, uh missed his family after that incident and a little traumatized, one needs to jump cars back to them, and I was just starting, hey Jude, don't be afraid.
SPEAKER_02Yep, another single for the uh Peak album of the year.
SPEAKER_00That's just a cover, and I don't think I have copyright to do it.
SPEAKER_02You don't, but it's lovely.
SPEAKER_00Yep, so yeah, they're they're going, you know, where they're going, they're trying to get away, and then they get to this whole traffic jam. It's like, yes, we're all trying to escape the murder bats that are drawn to sound. So it's it's totally helpful and smart to be doing all of this honking at each other in traffic. Totally. Fucking idiots.
SPEAKER_02Um It's not gonna make you go any faster.
SPEAKER_00No. Uh yeah, Glenn is just the most badass. Like he realizes, yeah, this is a terrible place to be, and we're gonna we're gonna do some off-roading. Uh shortcut. He's the he's the brains, and nothing can stop him except deer, apparently.
SPEAKER_02Oh man. That's so sad. And then I was th I was thinking when we I was watching that, I know he's been in a movie we've covered before, and then I remembered he was a douchebag in Volcano.
unknownReally?
SPEAKER_02He was the boyfriend of the doctor.
SPEAKER_00Oh, was that it's he's gotten a lot older between those two movies.
SPEAKER_02Well that was in that like 1997, I think. Yeah, it's been th almost 30 years. Let's be real. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Nice. So yeah. Much better character this time around. Uh yeah. And then even the way he goes out is like ultimate badass. I mean, he knows he's not getting out of that car. His leg is trapped, he's bleeding out. He had quite the iffy CGI crash down that hill. So Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It was I don't know. I I know that it was a tumble down the hill, but I also think he that vehicle he was driving got a lot more crunched up than I thought it would. I guess.
SPEAKER_00And he probably was trapped inside from all the like CGI glitching.
SPEAKER_02It might be. I mean, and and he had all those guns in the back, and what killed me was Hugh didn't take any of them with him. I was like, why are you not doing that? Like, I don't I don't understand.
SPEAKER_00This would have been helpful. Yeah, he's able to sacrifice himself to help the family get a away a little bit, you know, the when the vests descend on the car, on the minivan, that he's able to distract them long enough for for them to have a breather. Not great because you'd also have Otis the dog. Um and this is where I would have quite the conundrum as the viewer, where I was like, it's not a popular or great thing to say, but um this dog's a liability. Its barking did cause the Vesps to attack the car in the first place. Kind of an issue. And then I thought about like what would I do in the situation? And I was gonna start like typing that out for notes, and then I was like, no, I'm afraid of saying what I would do because people would get mad, or could get mad. And then Hugh did exactly note by note what I would have done.
SPEAKER_02So And by people who would get mad, are you referring to our listeners or perhaps me?
SPEAKER_00Porque no los.
SPEAKER_02Um I don't know why they didn't drive away. Like I don't did those vests pop all the tires.
SPEAKER_00Well, because the car is loud and there's so many more of them that driving is just sound that they can follow, and more of them I feel like they could have gone fast enough to get away. I don't think so, but Okay.
SPEAKER_02I don't like it.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I don't like it either, but but it's literally like you have to let him go or you're all dead.
SPEAKER_02And why'd you put the dog in the movie, people? Why'd you do it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just maybe maybe not, it's just supposed to be heartbreaking, but in the reality of it, I'm like, yeah, it's not a good thing, but it's the right thing, because your kids are more important, and I think that you're all gonna die.
SPEAKER_02That was Allie's dog. Like, it was the family dog, but I think that was Allie's dog.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That was a connection that we saw right from the beginning, and I feel like she's had to deal with a lot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02She's got a a real solid, strong family, but I think that that girl has had to deal with a lot with the accident and her grandparents dying, and and she's just had to roll with it. And I I feel for her because I think it's you know, she's being pulled away from the normal life that she did have into this post-apocalyptic madness. And it's real easy to say, well, everyone's going through it. Yeah, everyone is, but that doesn't minimize what one person is going through. So that's what I'm gonna say about that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I agree. Uh it's a lot for for her to deal with, especially, but and I think you know, so it shows again a little bit more of the like just how rough this is on her, and I like that they address it a little bit with Hugh coming and sitting next to her, and he's like, You may hate me for a long time, but like they have that moment and it seems like you know, like it could be rough, but then it shows her character a little bit to be like accepting, forgiving, moving on, being like, Okay, we've got to stick together and survive this thing, and sometimes you know, bad things are gonna happen, but like we can't turn on each other.
SPEAKER_02I did think it was really ridiculous that Kelly the Mom was telling Jude not to swear. I'm like, you're in one of the most intense situations. It sounds really silly for you to tell him not to swear.
SPEAKER_00I I no. I guess you gotta guard a kid's innocence a little bit, but also like you're right though. Uh for sure, bud. Uh there was a and then you know, this kind of heart-to-heart moment is cut short because then yeah, Jude sees the house. Which I don't know why, whenever it was just like the sound effect when he pulls the binoculars up like out of his like pocket. I was like, did he just pull out a gun? Oh no, those are binoculars. I was like, because then a part of me was like he he nabbed one of his uncle's guns. I was like, of course he would, but no, he didn't.
SPEAKER_02Uh I mean that would have been the smart thing to do. Not for him, but for Hugh. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Of course the guns, it becomes kind of a thing. It's like, when do you use guns? Because it's, you know, jumping when they have this the issues with the Reverend and stuff where he's got the shotgun on the Reverend, and the Reverend's like, yeah. Mm-hmm. He like just looks up at the Vesps flying around. He's like, Yeah, shoot me, and then see what happens to y'all. Like it's a different world.
SPEAKER_02You did say fuck around and find out. I mean, that's that's what you would find out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh which the Vesps, I didn't know it's like their hearing isn't quite as sensitive or advanced as the the aliens, the creatures from a quiet place.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There's a little bit more wiggle room, like they have the like, you know, they can whisper and talk quietly to each other inside a house, and there's like certain So they give them a little wiggle room. Like I said, it's like it's less severe than a quiet place in some of those cases, where there's you know, you're not having to make a sand trail to walk on barefoot because any little gravel crunch is the end of you. Like we don't have that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. But it's still pretty intense. I really, though, felt for the homeowner lady. I have to tell you, and maybe I shouldn't, but I'm sorry.
unknownI did.
SPEAKER_02You're coming in because you want refuge, you you ring the doorbell, or let me guess, no, the vest bell, and the woman comes out to defend her land because she doesn't know who the hell you are, and she gets eaten.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No, here's the way I summed up that scene. I said, Jude sees a house, so they quietly make their way down there, get the old lady who lives there killed, and then find a way to sneak into the property and squat in the house that's now unoccupied.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, no, this is not okay. But getting into that house, of course there's gonna be a snake in the tunnel.
SPEAKER_00There's a snake in my pipe. Oh man. I didn't think rattlesnakes would be in the region that they were in, so I had to do some research. Uh turns out there is a species of rattlesnake native to the northeast. Uh, and it can have that lighter coloring, so there's a lot of things people could complain about in this movie, but if anything, the people behind this movie were they they at least did their homework on rattlesnakes. Props to that. They actually were as accurate as they could be on that. And I was like, okay, cool, good for them. Bravo. Uh you got the like species right and the region and where it would be. I don't know why. Yeah, so at least they did that. They were like, well, we got the species right and we got we act rattlesnake accuracy, at least. In this. And then Yeah, I was trying to think what other like notes, because we jumped ahead. Oh yeah, like um blowing up the wrecked car as distraction cover noise to get away. Uh was very smart. Hugh shows a lot of like quick thinking and and intelligence in this movie. With just like certain things like that and hoof it. Uh driving's not an option, that is too loud. And yeah, with thanks to Allie and kind of that situation is like they're good at communicating silently, so they have that. But immediately it's like, oh well, Lynn is in pretty terrible shape with her cancer or you know, whatever she's dealing with, so that's a problem, so it's at least it didn't take them too long, it seems, to find the house and have a place to hunker down and not have to keep moving with her too much. So she's not making this trek. Which yeah, works for that and has the place where we're not just constantly on the road.
SPEAKER_02Unfortunately, unfortunately, Kelly gets bit, not by the snake, but by one of the Vesps who is called to the pipe.
SPEAKER_00By the snake.
SPEAKER_02By the snake.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Also, I had just like, I was like, I like Jude's hat. It's a random note, but it's a really cool hat.
SPEAKER_02It is a cool hat.
SPEAKER_00I'm a hat guy, and I thought it was a really cool hat. I liked his hat a lot.
SPEAKER_02How many hats do you have now, Pike?
SPEAKER_00Too many. Okay. But also not enough at the same time.
SPEAKER_02You're always buying more.
SPEAKER_00Always. Always.
SPEAKER_02But you have your favorites because there are some that I see a lot of the time. It's like similar. Like I'll see that you're wearing the same one. And then There's one that I'll see once and then maybe two months later. I don't keep a opaque hat calendar or anything.
SPEAKER_00You don't have a hat log?
SPEAKER_02No, I do not have a hat log.
SPEAKER_00Everybody else that I know does. I don't know why you don't.
SPEAKER_02I have a hard enough time keeping up with my Tomodachi Island.
SPEAKER_00Uh. But yeah, yeah, between the snake and then yeah, Kelly getting her legs all bit up. Things are starting to turn out really bad. And then Hugh, with his smart thinking again, fires up the woodchipper, which phenomenal plan. Uh that was really cool and really effective. You know why?
SPEAKER_02I haven't seen a wood chipper since oh, what was that lovely movie we covered a while back? College kids.
SPEAKER_00I wish I referenced that because uh in random tangent. Uh I did that with my brother, because we were going we were playing disc golf a lot in like the winter and spring before it got too hot. And one of the courses that I play the most, like the closest to me, is at the like University of Texas here in Tyler, the UT campus. And so playing in the spring school year is going on, and so there's a lot of students walking to and from classes on all the pathways and stuff as we like going holes holes in certain places. So we'd have to wait for things to clear before we could throw, and I would just go, college kid!
SPEAKER_02Of course. If anyone was gonna say that, you would.
SPEAKER_00Yep. That's one movie by Alan Tudic a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Um that is one movie that I wish we could cover again because it was so much fun the first time.
SPEAKER_00We get a little check-in with Rob. He's still alive. That's good news, and then we move on.
SPEAKER_02Uh I'm happy for Allie because I feel like she's been traumatized enough. And I just keep hoping the whole movie, please let Rob survive, please let her get to him because she needs a little bit of independence and to have somewhat a normal life because the poor girl is just she's been through enough.
SPEAKER_00She's like scrolling Instagram or something, uh, a couple of different things. I was like, well, it's good that social media news sites are still posting what's going on around the world for her to look at. Um, which is but you know, as weird as that and kind of goofy as that is, we get some foreshadowing because all the things that she's looking at when they're in the house are all these like religious group does this, religious sect doing this, these like and you're like, oh, the religious extreme wack-adoos are wack-adooing extremely.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. That's fun. Like crucifying someone.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But it's the foreshadowing of the Reverend and the Hushed that they'll meet soon. And so you're kind of setting those little things up, kind of planting those seeds. Uh, and then yeah, Kelly's getting worse, so we have to make the medicine run for the practically mortally infected wound if it's not helped with antibiotics immediately. So, you know, we throw a little bit of Last of Us in there, too. The stew gets more flavorful of different things that it reminds me of. And then as they're ready to leave the house, and I was like, and then the beanie. This kid's headwear game is so strong. He's got cool stuff.
SPEAKER_02Well, he had a suitcase, and everything that was in it was a hat.
SPEAKER_00Hey.
SPEAKER_02He didn't bring any clothes, just hats.
SPEAKER_00Me and him would get along real well. Uh, I get it, man. Uh. And I have a pretty small head. I'd borrow some of his stuff. I'd be like, hey, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. My head is bigger than yours. I have a very large head.
SPEAKER_00As long as they're like snapbacks or whatever, I can adjust the stuff on the back. Me and I'd be trying to share hats with Jude. But yeah, uh anyway. Making the the medicine run, and as they're just like trying to like go out, like the sky is just like filling with more and more of these swarming. There's so many of them, and I was like, it's terrifying. Can anything be more scary than tons of swarming vests ready to swoop at the first noise they hear? Oh, a lone preacher staring ominously watching them. Yep, that's scarier. Found it. Oh my gosh. Found the scarier thing immediately.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he didn't give me the f the I'm trying to think of a Reverend that has been good in some of these movies. That isn't an asshole.
SPEAKER_00The guy from um uh Poseidon.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's definitely not Reverend Scott, who was helpful to everyone on the Poseidon adventure. He's got his own idea and brutality to spread. Because if you join his flock, you'll be a l a bit tongueless.
SPEAKER_00Colt's got your tongue?
SPEAKER_02Truly. Colt got your tongue.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we get a lot of really great moments, yeah, in the pharmacy, and then after that, Stanley Tucci, I think, was really great in this movie. I think he would make his wonderful paternal grandmother Evelyn very proud. Just a moment, yeah. An ode to Evelyn Tucci, the hardworking woman from Northern Ireland who immigrated to the States to clean hotel rooms until she earned up enough money to open up her own small bakery. Uh and she was so proud of her grandson Stanley attending every single one of his plays, even all eight performances of the non-union, non-Disney uh allowed off-Broadway production of The Little Mermaid, driving young Stanley around in her first vehicle that she named the Icicle, uh, and through the love of cooking, befriending the paternal grandmother of one wonderful character actor, Walter Groggins, uh, Marilyn Groggins, of course, his grandmother, and she wrote the intro to Stanley's cookbook. It's just such a legacy, a family line there. It's beautiful.
SPEAKER_02That you know it is beautiful. My introduction to Stanley Tucci, not kidding, the devil is Prada. And I have to tell you, um, he was such a fantastic bright light as Nigel. I he was the best part or one of the best parts of the sequel that came out. Like he just amazing. A lot of people I know know him as Caesar Flickman from The Hunger Games, but for me, he will always be Nigel.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so the yeah, uh pharmacy, which I was like, oh cool, the vests are laying eggs in corpses now. Fantastic, awesome, great news, love it. Yep, can't be bad at all.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_00But really smart ideas, and not just only Hugh. The smart ideas run in the family because this was Allie's plan here, setting off the sprinklers in the pharmacy so they can escape with the antibiotics. Which was a really good move. Uh, maybe throw the flaming mop onto some of those eggs, too, but eh, hindsight. Probably wouldn't have done much.
SPEAKER_02It's so gross.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then that's where we meet the reverend, is outside there, like officially where he comes, you know, upon them in the road. And yeah, he's creepy as hell. You know, hey, you want to join my cult? I mean, flock? Uh the hushed, huh? And he doesn't take no for an answer. It's like, no means don't like no means no. Fuck off, dude. Uh we we we don't we're not interested. And then we get kind of like a little time jump after Kelly's recovered. Things seem to be in a good place. This creepazoid and his cultists just show up at their door. Or or the door of the old lady that they got murdered by Vesp and then took over.
SPEAKER_02It reminds me of Stephen King's book Cell and the President of Havid, which was the one of the characters who always showed up with a flock of people, and they were all people who were crazy because of the cell phone. There was this whole virus transmitted through a cell phone. So if you were talking on a cell phone when it hit, you were affected. And so, yeah, they would all flock together. And the president of Havid had his usual group, and they were calmer than everyone else because I don't know, they drank the Kool-Aid better, I don't know. But these guys reminded me of that, just the way they stood there and they weren't talking.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Just kind of backing him up. And yeah, again, just like, come be a part of this. It's like, absolutely not. No, thank you. Go away, weirdo. And then he just joined us. I was like, no, Dark Order, I will not leave now. Bye.
SPEAKER_02But you told me the Dark Order was a lot of fun. Why am I why should I not join the Dark Order?
SPEAKER_00Not this Dark Order. Join the other Dark Order. Not this Darker. These these this is the Dork Order. Leave them alone.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00And then, you know, while they're having their conversation just by reading lips or writing on the journal. You're getting all these sound effects from the Vesps and stuff in the background, which I was I looked into that a little bit. I was hoping that the Vesp sound effects would be like sourced from like real animal sounds, which they were to some degree, but like that they would have done some, like, you know, Jurassic Parking at a little bit, and like, well, a little bit of this and a little bit of that, and a little um and some sound familiar, I but I was a little disappointed to learn it's just stock sound effects. They just pulled a bunch of random growls and chirps and whistles and mixed them together, even creature sounds from the video game Time Splitters, Future Perfect. Uh it's the same as some of the enemies in that. And I was like, uh, okay. And so as they're having this conversation, riding back and forth, I'm like listening to them, and I'm like, yeah, those you it's clear that they're stock sounds, because I'm like, well, that sounds like a monkey, and then that's a bird, and I'm 100% sure that was just a bear. Um I heard a bear sound.
SPEAKER_02Um Yeah, I I agree with you. And I think Jurassic Parking as a verb is a wonderful thing. Thank you. Thank you for that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I was trying to think of like what else that that could be used for. That's just like that's just wouldn't uh that's probably not a fun joke. That's just fun when you're trying to find a spot at a nursing home.
SPEAKER_02Um oh yeah. Well, one thing that I didn't mention when when Hugh and Allie went into town, they found this man and woman on the ground. And when he rolled them over, he could see this piece of paper on the man's chest that just said shh. And so I recognized when the Reverend was there and before he left, he held up, he wrote on a piece of paper, shh. That was his handwriting. So I think their policy is join us or don't. We're gonna take what we want and we'll kill you. Like that's that's what's gonna happen. That's how it goes. And to join his flock, as we said, you have to cut out your tongue.
SPEAKER_00I I could make a comment about this man of the cloth uh focusing on the fertility of a child, but no, I'll I'll just leave it there, pointing out that that was his angle. Um, you can make your own parallels to our own world if you want, or don't.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Yep, make those parallels.
SPEAKER_00Anyway.
SPEAKER_02Again, I feel like this was something very timely in some ways.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And not in a good way. It's a real cringe, cringy way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but these psychos leave, but I was like, yeah, that's not over and done with. Uh I don't see them staying gone for long. Because they, especially the Reverend, don't really seem like the kind of people that pay much mind to agreement or consent. Even before the Vesps were a thing, I would assume.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think they've probably been hunkering down and waiting for something like this to happen. And now they're taking advantage of it.
SPEAKER_00Uh, we get another quick check-in with Rob. He's still alive. Yay, that's good. He's headed north to some refuge. And we don't get any more information because the internet dies. So there's that.
SPEAKER_02I still think the internet died because they did something. Like the cult did something to the house.
SPEAKER_00Could have been. But how how much tech know-how do they have? I mean, they did have all the the phones. Peik.
SPEAKER_02Peik. They had all those phones set up. They know enough about tech.
SPEAKER_00I mean, but like to take the internet down. Like, where's the where's the internet?
SPEAKER_02You unplug something. Yeah. All you have to do is unplug something. Like, it's it's not rocket science. Unplug the router and it's over. Like, that's outside. Well, they were I think they've been in the router. Oh, they had been in there.
SPEAKER_00They were down in the basement, yeah. Do they keep the router in the basement? That's a terrible place for the router. It's not very good reach.
SPEAKER_02No. No, but it must go to something in the basement that they could fuck around with.
SPEAKER_00I will say it's the most terrifying that those iPhone stock ringtones has ever been. Uh Death by Crickets and Strum.
SPEAKER_02Man. Jesus. Was bad.
SPEAKER_00But it also, yeah, getting fully checked out, it's like, yeah, they would use a little girl for their own purposes like that. Uh strapper.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00With phones like explosives for their religious insanity reasons. Uh sure, of course.
SPEAKER_02I don't think she wanted to be part of that. She looked terrified, that poor little girl.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Even when she was back outside standing there with her mother, it was like, or was it even her mother? No.
SPEAKER_00Nabbing kids.
SPEAKER_02They are. They're trying to procreate, and so they're getting girls and teenage girls, like little girls and teenage girls, so they can cultivate them in this process of becoming a cult member and believing in the cause. If they get them young enough, then they won't remember life before, and they'll just continue to do what they're told. But then you get someone like Allie who is not going to just eagerly conform to their requests and things.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh, which kind of leads to that, you know, another sacrifice made to protect and save Allie and the family, because she does get nabbed by this like handful of cultists there, and then Lynn, the grandmother, goes after them, takes them down to the ground as Allie like bites the fingers of another one and gets free, and then Lynn making that sacrifice, she screams, luring the vesps in on herself and the attackers while Allie's able to get distance away from them. Uh, and that works for seconds.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then Pastor Child Trafficker appears and takes her. Uh so. And then as he's wandering away with her and the family. I just like Stanley Tucci, you know, the way he just kinda almost like takes his glasses off and looks. He's like, Well, it looks like we're gonna have to call Liam Neeson, because my daughter's been taken.
SPEAKER_02Um it's true, right?
SPEAKER_00But no, they don't need Liam Neeson. Uh the Andrews family can all be total badasses and come in with weapons and do the damn thing. Uh they got the scythe, they got the knives, yeah. Jude's got his sharpened sticker. Hell yeah. Allie's welding a rock.
SPEAKER_02I love that Hugh made Jude that stick. Yeah. Like so he would have a weapon. It came in very, very, very handy. I do think that that sacrifice reminds me a lot of Ruth in Dante's Peak. Yeah. Climbing out of the boat to pull it to the Shua so that they wouldn't her grandchildren wouldn't die on the water.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, they come in not really well, he's got one gun, but doesn't shoot it. Not really a great idea, but definitely uses it to properly fuck up Father McPheely.
SPEAKER_02Uh oh man. Father McPheely. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Uh just took him out. Uh but yeah, all of the great stuff. He headbutt's a motherfucker. Uh they're coming in hard.
SPEAKER_02Uh, this is a very wrestling. I mean, you think about it.
SPEAKER_00But Hugh does get stabbed in the skirmish, and I was like, well, hopefully he's okay. And then it's like next scene, he's like, yeah, he's fine. Don't worry about it.
SPEAKER_02He had adrenaline going.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like he was on adrenaline fighting for his daughter's safety.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And yeah, it's kind of a just a quick wrap-up of the movie, you know, after this, that kind of because I was like thinking when this was going out, I was like, there's like 12 minutes left counting credits. What are we gonna do? Like, how are they gonna just like wrap this up? And it's like, oh, by wrapping it up very fast. Uh, we just get the jump to the near future, Hugh's fine. Uh, they have made the trek north to the refuge. Allie's reunited with Rob. It's a new world. It's a new dawn, it's a new day.
SPEAKER_02And I guess they're feeling good.
SPEAKER_00Uh-huh. Well, hopefully.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Allie seems happy with with Rob out shooting things, and she's getting resourceful herself. She's able to handle things, and I I think the wrap-up was good. I think there are a couple of places that I think the story could have been fleshed out a little bit more. But honestly, at the end of the day, I like that it was 90 minutes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It was great. You know? There was no nonsense. I feel like A Quiet Place was fleshed out more in some ways. But I think this one was fine too. So once A Quiet Place was announced, I think you know, the creators knew that this was gonna get hammered or compared to death with a quiet place. Yeah. And there was no budget information anywhere. I could not find budget information, so I can't tell you like what it cost to make the movie compared to a quiet place. But I don't think it was terrible. It just you know I wish we'd had Glenn a bit longer, but I also think that the movie was meant to show the strength, I think, of the family.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And them being able to survive. I just would have liked maybe a couple more scenes of the family before, you know, before things went off because I don't know. I'm not sure what it is. There's something that I wish it had, and I can't tell you exactly what it is, but I feel like it was missing a little bit of something. And so I'm going to go see if I can find any deleted scenes, and maybe that will give me what I was hoping for.
SPEAKER_00Maybe. I'm honestly curious about the book, the novel that it was based on.
SPEAKER_02Me too. Me too.
SPEAKER_00There's a brand new bookstore that just opened here in town that I'm gonna try to use for a lot of little things, so I might have to look into that. Uh because I I like, you know, so also there's like the bird box kind of of it. It's different with the site thing, but having this refuge and finding a place and having to adapt to this world at the end, it kind of reminds me of that a little bit. Not necessarily because Birdbox ends the movie and even the book kind of more ends on this refuge where that it should be fine, that they don't have to worry about it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Of course. Um, and we talked about this when we did Birdbox Barcelona or whatever. Um, Josh Malerman actually did release a book that is a sequel to Bird Box called Melanie. Um, you know, we we uh spoiler, um, the way we end in Birdbox with this, you know, sanctuary that they're at, things do not go well um at all, and immediately they're kind of back out on the road. Uh but I did read that book and I really liked it too. It was very good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm really interested in what they do um post Bird Box. Because I also really loved Bird Box Barcelona. Like I thought it was a really good take, and I'd be really interested in something more in that world. I don't know if they'll do an adaptation. Interesting.
SPEAKER_00The newer newest book or not. I don't know. I enjoyed it. I would I wouldn't mind seeing it because there's some really interesting stuff in there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I'm wondering if they will. They it doesn't look like anything has been announced, at least at this point, so so we'll see.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00It could be really interesting. Again, I'm not gonna spoil anything. People should read the book, but it takes some things in some really interesting directions. There's some twists that are interesting. I think would be cool to see kind of in movie form to see how they do it, but also I don't know if they could do it correctly without kind of messing with some of the stuff that they really that made the original movie great. So maybe not.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I like that this this one took place in Montclair, New Jersey, because that's a place I've I've actually been there. I've been in that city. I had a friend there. And so I'm like, oh Montclair. Okay. I'm familiar with it where that is and kind of the lay of of everything. So yeah, that's cool. But I think we did it, Peike.
SPEAKER_00I think so. Good to go. We are. And a perfect timing almost as if on cue. Feedback phone is ringing, and we will see what they gotta say.
SPEAKER_02All right.
SPEAKER_00All right. We do have a little bit of feedback this week that we can get into. Uh should be interesting. I've glanced ahead a little bit. So uh yeah, let's go ahead and get into it so we can talk about these.
SPEAKER_02All right. Well, Catherine says, as soon as they killed Otis the dog, I pretty much turned against the entire family and had a hard time connecting to their struggle. I know, Catherine. I know. I get it. I looked into when the book The Silence was written to see if it was inspired by a Quiet Place, but it was published in 2015, while a Quiet Place's screenplay was written in 2016. So while it felt like a ripoff, it technically wasn't. But it did show completely different versions of humanity. A Quiet Place shows a family that found a way for their most vulnerable member, a newborn, to survive, while the silence immediately sacrificed their weakest member, Otis, the best boy Rottweiler, who did his best to alert and defend his family. Throwing the mother and baby to the tunnel reinforced the sacrificial society. A hundred percent. While I didn't love the movie, I did love the Vesps. Swarms of tiny pterodactyl bats with so many teeth. This was a monster movie where I may not have been cheering for the Vesps, but I enjoyed their attack scenes more than I did the human drama. Thank you, Catherine. I feel like you laid that all out great.
SPEAKER_00Alright, uh the next one comes from Natalie. Uh says, The quiet place or a quiet place used a deaf actor to portray a deaf character. The silence did not. Which I didn't even think about, but yeah, it is a good Yeah, it's a really good thing for you to point out and and and talk about. And yeah, it's definitely a conversation that, you know, representation uh of different kinds in movies is very important. And I don't know why, yeah, I didn't even think about it when we were covering it. Um to give some I don't know, because I don't I don't want to sound like I'm you know discounting that at all, because you are absolutely that is a good point. And we praised Quiet Place a lot for for their casting in that realm. Uh I wouldn't want to dump much hate on on Kieran and Shipka or the casting of stuff on here too much. I don't know if it changes anything, and maybe it doesn't. Um she is portraying a character that was not born deaf but has recently become deaf because of an uh accident. They still could have found somebody with with a hearing disability to portray that absolutely. So I don't know if it does actually make that any better or worse. Maybe not. Uh it it's when you get really specified things for certain actors, it's it's hard to sometimes fill those representative roles. So there is a world where maybe they did try to find somebody and couldn't. So I don't know. Uh but it is a good thing to point out because it definitely is one of those talking points that like representation is always very important for sure to keep in mind.
SPEAKER_02Melissa says, if you've never seen the B movie Pterodactyl, it's all I could think of during this film. I'm gonna have to check that out. It's as if that movie and a quiet place had a mutated bird box baby. Okay.
SPEAKER_00I get it, because I think we talked about those, you know, but we mentioned birdbox as well and some of the Yeah. It definitely has those those vibes. Uh again, and it it as it turned out, it's all kind of just the coincidental timing of a lot of ideas. Um yeah, it's interesting. Which goes into this uh last one that we have from G. So this is a Timu quiet place. It's not terrible, but it's obviously a ripoff. Uh, to which we did uh actually discuss that, and it is not. Um but I can see why a lot of people did because even originally looking into this before we covered it, I was like, oh yeah. I think even when we spun the wheel and it landed on it two weeks ago or whatever, and you were like, Oh yeah, the the T Movie Quiet Place. It's like, you know, like almost the same thing. It's like, oh yeah, it's that. But then with covering it, then I I wanted to do the due diligence of actually looking into that. And so we had that discussion of like Yes. You would think, but strangely enough, no. It's just no insane coincidence that there all of those similarities happened in two different places simultaneously, but there is no ripoff actually happening here that it was two separate ideas, stories that just happened to be so incredibly similar that were done at the same time.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. Yeah. Well, we appreciate your feedback as always. You can find us on the podcastica discord. We have a channel there, Run for Your Lives. So feel free to join us there. You can find us on Facebook and Instagram at Run for Your Lives Podcast, or you can email us at RunFoyour Lives Podcast at gmail dot com. If you're enjoying the show, tell your friends we are available on all the podcast players, including Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and more. You can go to RunFo Your Lives Podcast.com for all the links that you're ever gonna need, and give us a review on Apple Podcasts as that is the best way to share the love and get us out there even more. We really appreciate it.
SPEAKER_00We really do, absolutely. And of course, speaking of sharing the love, you know I gotta give those shout outs to things going on in the podcastica universe around us and beyond. A lot of good stuff for you to check out um while you're waiting for the next episode of Run for Your Lives. We've got some other great podcasts for you to go check out. So, of course, the newest podcast on the Podcastica lineup on our roster here, uh Everything's Fine, where uh Jason and Karen will be jumping into Widow's Bay, uh the Apple TV series there. Um and I think last week I talked about it that it'll be kind of a mid-October, but I think actually they're getting onto it like that.
SPEAKER_02I think they moved it up.
SPEAKER_00I think they the the hype has been uh built up enough and people are really excited for it. So it should be in your podcast players uh way sooner than that, very soon. So definitely keep an eye out for that. It should be like next week, hopefully. Uh, but we'll see. Uh I think they're getting onto it a lot quicker. So get to that. If you haven't watched Widow's Bay, it's a great time to jump into it. And then it's always good to rewatch as well. So follow along with them over on Everything's Fine. Also, uh the Walking Dead cast, um, Walking Dead rewatch has been going on. They're gonna take another little break from that coming up pretty soon. Uh, because Jason and Yeah, uh Jason will be busy uh teaming up with Jamie and Nathan on uh coverage of Crystal Lake, the uh upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series. Um so they'll be doing coverage of that, taking a break from uh Walking Dead rewatched, so Jason can focus a little bit more time on that as those come out. If that's on the Walking Dead uh cast feed, I'm not 100% sure. I believe it might be, but definitely go to uh podcastica.com to make sure you following every show and what feeds they're on. 100% confirmed. Uh I think it's there, but just in case, go to the website and make sure. But um, we'll be taking a break from the rewatch to do the Crystal Lake coverage. Uh, so go check that out. And then, of course, for Dead City, now that's wrapped, uh, Alex and Ben still getting together for a feedback episode now to kind of cover everybody's thoughts for the season. Uh, so you can go check that out as well. A lot of cool stuff there. Uh, still slaying going on, covering some buffy stuff this week, season five, episode seven. And they've got Doty on the show this week, which is always a special treat. Dodie's awesome. Love Dotie. Um, get Penny, Kara, and Dotie over there. Uh, Casting Light, continuing on with the coverage of lanterns, which has been fantastic. So, of course, uh episode six this week. Jason, Kirk, and Jim covering that over there. So, lanterns fan, check out Casting Light and get that coverage as well. And then uh this one's news to me as I'm reading it. So, this is cool. Uh Welcome to the Apocalypse is coming back. Yay, uh, one of the other um, really, I guess the only, because we have Buffalo Buffalo, but it's not on Podcastica officially. It's not so uh they are the they're the Podcastica official kind of improv comedy uh podcast, um, where they're, you know, a range of cast of characters, surviving the apocalypse, going through all kinds of crazy adventures and hijinks, uh, just improv stuff as they're telling the story as they go. Uh Randy does an incredible job with the editing and sounds and stuff, and it's hilarious, and it's so much fun, so definitely give that a check. It'll be back very soon for season three, uh, featuring the uh improv and voice talents of all kinds of people. Maybe even somebody that's speaking right now, uh, you might hear uh on this upcoming season. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I'm dying for that. Yeah. Uh Peg, you have to listen to Margaret's um three-minute update about this season.
SPEAKER_00All right, so they have a little season trailer, in a way, up right there that you can go check out. Yes.
SPEAKER_02And there's a very interesting product sponsor.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so definitely do that. Uh, and then outside of Podcastica, of course, if you want some other great, like the comic booky kind of stuff and uh horror cult favorite kind of stuff, uh, you can always check out Pirate Core Entertainment Podcast Network and our friends over at TV Podcast Industries, both of them doing a lot of shows. Also, some extra coverage of shows, so TV Podcast Industries covering lanterns, so you can check that out. And then um, of course, on Pirate Core, they've got their own coverage of Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th coverage going on over there on the What's on Tonight podcast. You know, they gotta fill the time in before January, before the pitch. I know.
SPEAKER_01And then they're gonna be all in on that, I'm sure. Uh they will.
SPEAKER_00I'm ready for January for the pit to come back. I'm so excited.
SPEAKER_02I'm still hoping to be caught up by then.
SPEAKER_00We'll see. Definitely go check out those. And then, as I mentioned, of course, also off podcastic. It's like off Broadway. Um, off podcastica. Uh if you want more of me and Daphne over on the Buffalo Buffalo podcast with our friends Jeff and Jerry, you can get that as well. We're playing stupid games, winning non-existent prizes. Uh, having a good time. Just the the prize is the friendship we made along the way. Uh it's it's a great time. We make each other laugh or suffer, whichever way you want to look at it, and it's a good time every week. We have a blast.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. Love it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but other than that, uh, go check out that stuff and then make sure to come back right here next week to Run for Your Lives, where we will have a new episode. We've got just a few, just a handful left of the season.
SPEAKER_02We're I know it's crazy.
SPEAKER_00Running down to the end, and then we'll have our look back and all that stuff, which I'm excited for. Our Riffle Awards. There's a lot of great stuff we've done this season.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Don't start making your ballots liet, because we've still got a handful of movies left to go.
SPEAKER_02We do, some good ones. This is gonna be real rough pig. I have already been thinking about it. And I'm this is gonna be very difficult. I think this year or this season is going to be incredibly difficult.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh we've set the bar high with some of these choices.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, some good stuff, like I said, it's good stuff even coming, including next week. There's one that could be in the running for some stuff. Possibly. We'll have to see how things go. But yeah, uh Daphne, what are we doing next week?
SPEAKER_02Well, after his young son disappears, a widowed crime writer turns to his estranged father, a retired detective for help. Their search reveals a connection to a serial killer imprisoned decades earlier, raising the terrifying possibility that someone is copying his crimes. We are discussing James Ashcroft's 2026 film, The Whisperman.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Uh a brand new movie just a couple of weeks out from when we covered it from its release, and uh Netflix film as well, so check it out with Adam Scott. Always a big uh fan of him on this podcast. I think it's our first I think it's the Run for Your Lives debut of Robert De Niro.
SPEAKER_02Robert De Niro. I know. I can't imagine that we haven't had any films with him. But he doesn't do horror really, I don't think. Yeah. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I've we've done so many movies that there's a possibility he had, but as far as I can think, I don't think so.
SPEAKER_02I think this is the first, but yeah, I think it is too.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, um, so definitely go watch that and give us your thoughts on that one. Uh go ahead and give the like pre-warning, kind of like when we did weapons and some other stuff, that uh heavier movie, heavier subject matter, deep discussions, including some uh some stuff that may be triggering for some people. So just give you some uh you know caution on some of that. But I think it's a great conversation and a great movie to go check out. So do that and leave us your thoughts for next week.
SPEAKER_02Yes. And with that, we've reached the end of another episode of Run for Your Lives. Thanks everyone for listening. I'm Daphne.
SPEAKER_00And I'm Pate.
SPEAKER_02And if you have to run, you better run for your lives. Bye bye.
