[00:00:00] Hey everyone, welcome to the show. I'm Daphne. And I'm Pate. And this is the Run For Your Lives Podcast. This episode we are talking about the science fiction sci-fi comedy disaster film Sharknado directed by Anthony C. Ferante and released on the sci-fi channel July 11th, 2013.

[00:00:59] We're finally going there, Pake. We're finally doing Sharknado. How do you feel about that? I'm excited actually. This has been on the radar since like very early on when we first started, when we were talking about just doing all kinds of different monster movies and creature features.

[00:01:22] And we've branched out a lot to different kind of categories and gotten deeper and more serious films than I expected to off the start. And we've gone down a lot of different avenues,

[00:01:33] but this is always in the back of my head as something that's like when you're thinking of just like the crazy monster movies. It's like, oh, Sharknado is just like one of the craziest.

[00:01:43] And then it's just kind of set on the like back burner for these like four years. And so finally it's like we needed a movie for this week and it's like I can think of a couple of

[00:01:53] really good ones that we could like have a fun conversation about which this is going to be a fun conversation. But I was like, I could think of a few that are a little deeper or a

[00:02:00] little more in depth or like involved. But then I was like, fuck it, we haven't done Sharknado yet. That's gotta be. We haven't and you gave me a couple of movies to choose from

[00:02:13] and it really was a no brainer for me. It was going to be Sharknado. I just feel like it's fun, ridiculous. And I'm down to talk about it. You had never seen it.

[00:02:30] No, as much as it's like one of those ridiculous things that should feel like right up my alley and it is but also it's so campy in its own its own thing and like all the sequels and all

[00:02:39] that I was like, it's just something that I haven't dived into yet because usually when I do dive, I'm not even trying to make puns as far as its aquatic shark. But because usually when I do,

[00:02:50] then it's like, all right, now I have to go fully in. Like I was like with that, I didn't watch a single Fast and Furious movie until like the eighth or ninth one.

[00:02:59] And then I watched all of them and like the span of a week and a half like it was very much like, okay, now I have to live in this world and really so that's kind of like with

[00:03:08] Sharknado is I passed it up and then it's like, well, I'm going to get into it. Am I going to really get into it? And then I got to just like, but they're so bad. So there's no way I'm going to like

[00:03:17] get really into them. And then I watched this first one and immediately had a thought. I was like, is it weird that I actually really want to see the entire series now? Like badly,

[00:03:25] I really want to watch all of these and see how much more insane and terrible that they can get. I think I'm obsessed a little bit. I might have to do that because I so for those who don't

[00:03:38] know, most people probably do, but I didn't really know until now like looking into it. There are six movies. So yes, there was this one and then I just looked through like the titles and stuff of the other ones and I'm like, I have to. Yeah, Sharknado two,

[00:03:52] the second one. That's the official subtitle. Sharknado three, oh hell no. Then Sharknado four, the fourth Awakens. I'm not making that up. Sharknado five, Global Swarming. And then the last Sharknado, it's about time, which looking at that movie is really funny and clever

[00:04:14] as a subtitle on two fronts because they're finally ending these ridiculous movies. But also apparently the plot of that movie is that they have to travel back in time to the first

[00:04:24] Sharknado to stop it from happening to save the world. So yeah, I'm so in. I want all of it now. Do you think that we should cover one a season? Maybe. Okay. And that might not stop me from

[00:04:44] watching all of them before that. But yeah, that might be as we've kind of wrapped up trimmers. We've got a few other trimmers things we still want to do. But then if we're looking

[00:04:54] for a new like ridiculous, campy, straight to video or whatever kind of like series to play with on the end of seasons, Sharknado might become the next one. I'm open to that.

[00:05:05] Okay, good. I'm glad to hear that because I feel like it's not a super no, let's just be honest. I'm not holding back on this one. It's not a deep movie. No, it isn't. And I think we like

[00:05:23] movies or at least like to end our season with movies that don't make you work too hard. They're just there. They know what they are for your enjoyment. And I think this kind of fits that because it's ridiculous. I mean, let's be honest. It's absolutely ridiculous.

[00:05:46] Yeah, for sure, which sometimes you need. Sometimes you do need and that's because yeah, it's terrible. But like, you know that they did it on purpose. Like they had a very, very, very limited budget on effects and what they could do. So instead of trying to pretend like

[00:06:06] it's going to be a good movie with the limited amount of stuff they have, it's like, well no, then we'll just like lean hard into the campy ridiculousness of it and know that like it's just one of those things like it's so bad that it's amazing.

[00:06:20] Like, I don't think that they had any idea that it was going to get the cult following that it has or that it was going to spawn all of those movies. You know, the sequels. I don't think that they

[00:06:37] had any clue that that was going to happen. But Asylum, which is the company that puts out movies like this, well they have a history of doing these types of mock busters because they

[00:06:53] take other films and kind of twist them into something similar while also doing it for such a low budget that that's what the selling point is. It's so bad that it's going to be amazing to

[00:07:10] watch. Yeah, we talked about them before in the past but they did snakes on a train and they they've done yeah I mean I can try to think of like different like they just capitalize on like

[00:07:25] whatever they do things on purpose. They do things on purpose. They did a movie called American Warships that was supposed to be like battleship which came out at around the same time but they purposely have their movies scheduled to go to theaters for like a few days

[00:07:47] just before the movie that their kind of copying comes out. Right now this one's a little different now this is the first Asylum movie we've covered I'm pretty sure it is but yeah this one is a

[00:08:01] little different that it is I guess it's original it's not one of those like blatant bad rip offs like it is a shark tornado movie had never been done before like it is original in concept right

[00:08:15] but yeah it's like I don't think they expected like you said but it did jump start an entire cultural phenomenon. Oh my gosh I just remember it being such a big thing have you seen Sharknado

[00:08:28] it's so bad it's good that's what I kept hearing the whole time and I mean Asylum has done some decent things I will say this they gave us Black Summer which is a great series on Netflix

[00:08:41] it's a zombie series it's good. I didn't know they were behind that. They were behind that yeah it was it was a kind of a spin-off of Z Nation which I thought at first they were trying to be

[00:08:52] super serious with it and then by season two of Z Nation it was very clear that the camp factor was there I think they realized they couldn't be the walking dead so they might as well

[00:09:07] be who they are yeah and that's what made it fun yeah they're also responsible for a movie that is Attack on Cocaine Bear and it's called Attack of the Meth Gator and I remember seeing that title

[00:09:23] you know kicking around before so yeah yep. Yeah so we will jump into this one and just a little bit of course with your production notes and synopsis and our classic stuff and then as we kind of go

[00:09:42] into you know breaking it down character wise now I'm gonna go ahead and say Daphne is aware of this uh this is another one of those additions of Run For Your Lives where if my notes were

[00:09:53] a box of cereal again it's just oops all jokes uh because that's really all that I have so like I they're still broken up into character sections but then I have a lot of just kind of extra

[00:10:05] notes about production and about stuff and random thoughts and jokes that I had but it's still mostly like even my character notes are still just mostly like retorting to things that they said or did uh because yeah you guys know it's Sharknado so again

[00:10:25] I didn't really try to like talk about what was going on with the story and really dig too deep into the characters because nobody wants an analysis of the arcs and motivations of the

[00:10:36] characters in Sharknado we know why we're here we know why you're here so why kid ourselves exactly this is not going to be a deep discussion over the last couple of weeks we've had some deeper darker movies that we've talked about

[00:10:53] this is not one of them it honestly is very timely to come for us to do a fun one to break up some of that seriousness yeah give us a chance to kind of chill and just laugh a lot

[00:11:06] because I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of laughter in this podcast episode because I hope so it's kind of a mess if there's a point where I get emotional and start crying during

[00:11:15] the recording of this one then something has gone wrong um then you have shifted and you're talking about a different moment right because there should be no tears not in this one so here are some

[00:11:30] of my production notes was filmed in Los Angeles and Santa Monica California it is the first installment of a series of films pate gave you all the titles so now you know them they're in your head

[00:11:47] so anthony c ferrante actually directed all of the films not just the first one he did all of them um he also had cameos in each of the movies as well which I thought was kind of cool

[00:12:04] he started or he decided to direct this one because his friend robbie wrist encouraged him to do it now robbie wrist is familiar to um anyone who watched the brady bunch because he played cousin oliver he also played the bus driver in this movie okay okay

[00:12:29] yep uh the other cameo that we saw just very briefly was julie mccullough she played johnny with an eye waves and she was famous for playing a character called julie on growing pains

[00:12:45] and was fired because kurt cameron became religious and because julie had posed for a playboy it caused quite a big issue so the budget was two million which is more than they normally get when they're

[00:13:00] directing films for asylum it's usually under a million um it got two hundred thousand dollars from limited to two hundred screenings but has such a huge cult following it's 85 minutes long pike bring us the synopsis all right there's sharks and tornadoes sharknado

[00:13:24] you know it's it's it's self-explanatory uh as far as that it's like yeah it's there's not a lot of stuff to think about but no if you want like a more real you in synopsis

[00:13:36] do you need one do you need one but in case no a free hurricane hits los angeles causing man-eating sharks to be scooped up in tornadoes and floods the city with shark infested seawater

[00:13:47] yeah or not i mean they were flying around without seawater they were just landing on people and biting people and yeah it was real wild yeah there was a lot of back and forth of what really

[00:14:03] constitutes as a storm or flooding or rain uh but yeah yeah i have some notes on different things where one minute it looks like they're in two feet of water in the next minute they're showing sharks

[00:14:17] underwater in this big blue what was probably a tank well those were like that was like stock footage of literally sharks in the ocean like deep ocean in the middle of the movie like it made

[00:14:30] no sense whatsoever but again what are we watching right i have to say turkey made more sense than this and that's saying a lot that is oh man so where are we gonna start pague i mean i'd like to say we're gonna start with a character

[00:14:51] of finn shepherd because i think that we are however i just think that um we may go all over the place just because of the ridiculousness yeah we'll bounce around i'm sure but technically finn

[00:15:04] is the main character the through line spoiler even though i haven't seen him but just looking through a little bit of all six movies he's he's what the driving force uh but yeah irons earrings

[00:15:17] character finn in a shark movie his name's finn yeah of course it is of course all i could think is steve sanders because he was in 90210 which i watched and i yeah i mean steve sanders is fighting

[00:15:34] sharks okay it's it's taking place in california it's like okay you know steve sanders is gonna fight some sharks um yeah before we though dive into the whole character finn and the story

[00:15:51] i just want to talk a little bit about that first scene that we get which really didn't seem to have anything to do with anything nothing not other than it was like to set up the idea of the shark

[00:16:04] nato that's yeah that's basically because we get the ones that are like important to the plot later but as far as that it was just showing like oh a a shark nato uh you know right from the

[00:16:18] beginning it's like it's fancy we don't need a bunch of science mumbo jumbo and reasons for it we do get like the news report global warming and then that's all we're like yeah that'll cover it

[00:16:28] just say the words global warming people go okay fine whatever that makes oh we'll go with that but yeah it's like the movie just starts hard with a there's a tornado there's sharks yep

[00:16:39] there you go that's it and then it's like and now we got a boat and there's people just getting eaten up uh yeah storm sharks tornado boat you get it uh i'm not gonna i have to say though

[00:16:54] i have to say one thing the guy that had the money and that wanted the boat with all the sharks in it or whatever he ran out of the room and all i could think was where the hell does he

[00:17:06] think he's going he's on a boat where's he gonna run off to there's nowhere and the other guy looked menacing enough that he wouldn't have gotten far anyway but i really just am like dude there's nowhere

[00:17:20] to go yeah you're in the middle of the ocean on a boat i don't know what you think you're doing yeah but that that opening scene i wanted to start some notes but then i was like you know what

[00:17:33] i'm not even gonna try to harp on the bad visual effects no so i was like let me just get it out of the way early right yeah the CGI sucks for the whole movie it it's kind of a point of the whole

[00:17:44] thing right you know so i was like i could stop and point out every awful looking bad CGI choice they make but i would like to have get my notes like i'd like my notes to be done in less than

[00:17:54] 12 hours so uh you know i'm gonna just not pause it and try to take a note on every bad CGI moment because that's every frame of the film uh i don't think there was a single bit of CGI that

[00:18:06] was good no i could enjoy at least laugh at the moments of sharks slurping dudes up like noodles that was cool uh so we get so fin uh um he likes to surf that that you know he likes to surf

[00:18:27] he owns a bar he has a staff of people that work at the spa that he doesn't care about any of them except for nova i guess uh you know i don't know because he does seem to care about people as we find out later on

[00:18:45] his wife doesn't like that he cares about other people but or his ex-wife yeah she doesn't seem to like much of anything she's what you call high maintenance like real high maintenance but yeah

[00:18:58] you know he's out surfing around with his buddy baz on a ski dupe uh you know it's funny about that the guy that plays baz is Logan from Baywatch and i'm like that can't be Logan from Baywatch he had all

[00:19:12] the blonde hair and yeah it's Logan from Baywatch yeah yeah uh but yeah he's out there i did notice the lifeguard on duty at the beach who hired that guy worst lifeguard ever ever ever on like two fronts

[00:19:31] first it's like he's just terrible at his job he doesn't see this woman thrashing around out in the water or the literal swarm of sharks coming in um of course i'll be fair to you know the

[00:19:41] beaches that they were shooting this scene at were clearly two very different locations so maybe he was in a third random location and didn't see any of this um i don't know but then also you know once

[00:19:55] the shark attacks happen he starts evacuating the beach who evacuates a beach for sharks like yes you clear out the water but everybody off the beach why i mean for this movie ads kind of fitting

[00:20:11] eventually we start seeing sharks in places they shouldn't be like on top of high rise buildings but at least if you want to like play in some level of reality everybody off the beach the

[00:20:22] sharks are coming they're gonna come up here and start stabbing yet like what do you expect they're gonna walk right up to you and take your purse get off the beach uh yeah what also drove me crazy during those scenes where like the slow motion action scenes of

[00:20:40] the people just i'm just like what is this yeah it's like i don't have the time to point out all the logical nonsense because it's just sharknado but there was like yeah i was like they were like

[00:20:56] 20 feet away from the shore at most so why are they gunning the engine on this uh like jet ski for like 30 seconds 40 seconds to get to the shore it's like that should have been oh we're there

[00:21:10] yeah no uh and then there's suspension of disbelief pic that's right for this way or it's like the science nerd part of me it's like you know sharks keep moving forward they

[00:21:22] don't actually have the ability to stop and sit still in water they they move so then then there's points where you just like they look out the water and there's just fins sticking up

[00:21:32] it's like completely still in different places what but yeah i can't get hung up on things like that or this will never end so uh it won't and it should end i mean we can't i mean we could

[00:21:48] talk for hours about it but i feel like we'd just be going in circles and having the same conversation about the same things i mean what do you think if those if they're okay so if those

[00:21:59] sharks and then i'm gonna just say this and then i'll get off that soapbox and we'll go back to moving if those sharks were not moving is it because they electrocuted the water or electrocuted

[00:22:10] them in the water so they're like stunned maybe um i don't know but that's me trying to come up with a scientific reason why they would not be moving that's your first problem is trying to

[00:22:22] put reason and sharknado in the same box that's not yeah science in this movie do not add up so i should say that peke and i are not going to try to prove or disprove any of the scientific information

[00:22:35] that was put in this movie because that would take days they didn't have a research specialist on this film making sure that what they were showing was accurate like some of these do no that's

[00:22:47] that was not in their two million dollar budget there may have been a couple of things that were actually true but i don't know what they are like yeah i don't know i mean we'll see like what that

[00:23:01] the the highway is is higher than street level of this yeah that's probably true but other than yeah exactly yeah so yeah so this big storm that i guess will just take their word for it

[00:23:17] that it's a big storm uh because i don't know most of the time the water looks pretty calm and serene uh for a for a hurricane did that storm come up so fast because i've lived in hurricanes

[00:23:29] and i've never seen it be calm and then two seconds later things are flying everywhere and but then it goes back to calm after that yeah i don't know how the how does that yeah i don't know how it

[00:23:43] overhead shots of like the beach with the pier and the bar on the pier i was like yeah nothing's going to ramp up the tension like a poorly animated splash of water hitting the side of the pier

[00:23:55] while the rest of the water looks as serene and calm as possible uh you know it's like why do you keep using this overhead shot that's gonna undermine this scenario that you keep pretending is happening there's a big storm outside and then they go outside it's like

[00:24:11] it's not even raining it's not even windy it's like actually the weather seems really nice out here i don't know if you're trying to get people to leave because there's a hurricane coming

[00:24:21] i think only finn was i think he may have been the only one that realized that something was coming because nobody else seemed to know anything about it they were all having their drinks and having fun

[00:24:34] i mean i'll be fair to them if i was there i wouldn't know anything was happening like i said it looked like a real nice day and then he's he's calling his ex-wife wife i don't know exactly

[00:24:44] if they're just separated or actually divorced i don't know um she's dating some guy that nobody cares about oh um oh my gosh wait till we get to that yeah so now he's calling her on the phone

[00:24:57] to hound her about you need to seek shelter and get further away from the ocean the whole time that he's in a bar on a pier literally on the ocean but you know okay sure got it yeah is that what

[00:25:13] ex-husbands do i don't know i don't have one i wouldn't be able to tell you i mean do they when when imminent threat of death comes along do you just pick up the phone and call

[00:25:30] your ex-wife well i mean he has he's probably worried about his daughter i'll give him that yeah okay that makes sense it's more worried about that but but yeah so finally then the water that

[00:25:41] comes out of literally nowhere and starts just crashing over everything except for when people are like there then conveniently there's no water but then when they're running away there it's

[00:25:52] it's a lot of back and forth who knows i will give a little tip of the hat to the jaws reference shooting the oxygen tank in the shark's mouth yes golf clap for that uh yes they did the best

[00:26:04] that they could with it practical effects weren't there no no practical digital anything nothing was there i think it might have been done with paint shop pro or you know that paint

[00:26:23] that graphic paint program that used to come on old it's yeah i mean whatever they had was like the slightly updated version of whatever program was used in uh oh what's the freaking uh bird

[00:26:37] demic uh oh yeah at least the shark's moved but uh other than that bird demic that's another one that we should cover i feel like that could be that could be fun we can do bird demic but then

[00:26:52] i'm just gonna warn you it's gonna turn into like just partially bird demic partially a love letter to whitney more so it's you know okay i don't know if i'm ready for that

[00:27:13] but yeah again i you'll have to keep things on the rails for story wise if you care uh because again i just skip a lot to just not with fin uh just more comments and and things

[00:27:26] because they do they do go to the house they make it up there to try to save april and claudia i believe yes but he was denied critical need to know information about his son being at flight

[00:27:40] school you know i mean why was he not told he seemed very uptight at times yeah it seemed like his family wanted nothing to do with him which is why at the end when they're like oh we

[00:27:53] completely love you again and nothing matters it's like see how long that lasts yeah ten minutes yeah um i i wonder we have april here in the notes but like i don't really have much anything to

[00:28:06] say about her uh other than yeah her new boyfriend i was like we were introduced to and then subsequently relieved of do she make fuckface very quickly so don't have to worry about him yeah but you know what one of one of bas' funniest lines came from that

[00:28:21] because callin gets attacked and is killed by the shark and bas says looks like it's their time of the month because the whole bit of water was covered in full of blood that i thought was funny

[00:28:36] but what made me laugh even more is that callin just died and april is immediately yelling for fin yeah and it's like no not my boyfriend oh he's just legs now all right finn back to you you save us

[00:28:53] the guy was kind of an asshole you know what i think we're fine oh my gosh he was turning finn's kids against him basically that was annoying oh my gosh he's one of those people

[00:29:08] yeah but then with nothing but a curtain rod in a dream finn got the whole group safely out of the house somehow uh moments before the whole place comes crumbling down just it though not the house next door like directly next door almost touching it was fine

[00:29:24] but um it almost seems like these sharks have a vent data against me i don't know what the reasoning would be that it's like very targeted like even the hollywood sign was like

[00:29:34] chunked like directly at them um and nothing else like yeah that didn't make any sense either but he does okay we have to say this finn does care about other people that is that is something

[00:29:50] he does try to save people that seems to be his thing is that there was a point where they were trying to get on the highway and then something was happening behind them

[00:30:01] and then i didn't see any water so i wondered what they were running from yeah um yeah i don't i don't know uh and a woman locks her dog in the car but the window is actually like down a

[00:30:15] little bit like do you could probably get your hand in there and i but yeah yeah i don't know what ha i mean that was kind of nuts yeah i mean there's like water coming in over the side and

[00:30:27] washing cars away except for theirs theirs is fine of course uh yeah and then it's not washing all the cars it's certain cars i don't know it was a hot mess it's yeah just choices that are made

[00:30:39] like yeah when the house comes down and then finn says easy come easy go and i was like sure um out of all the things you could say including probably the best choice which was nothing you went with that so okay it's a choice uh all right

[00:30:58] sure there's just some weird dialogue wise i don't i don't understand because then when they're driving before they get to that like weird little traffic thing with cars but then no cars but then water

[00:31:10] but then no water but then lots of sharks but also no sharks um and he's talking to his daughter and she's like telling him oh we have to go around this way because i always skip hollywood

[00:31:21] traffic whenever i get there he's like what are you doing in hollywood it's like well dad there are several entertaining recreational activities available in a location of that size and popularity why

[00:31:31] wouldn't i i mean he obviously has no idea what his daughter's up to at all so i think he's learning this maybe this is making him angry you live in beverly hills why are you going to hollywood

[00:31:49] why wouldn't i just supposed to stay locked in your room forever and ever yeah uh yeah it's kind of ridiculous again as we said yeah but you just say finn does have this off spot

[00:32:04] he really wants to help people he sees the bus which from the outside it didn't look like anyone was in there why would you assume anyone was in there it's like can you just roll up there and

[00:32:14] like hey anyone there you know but instead he's like no we're gonna go up to the bridge i'm gonna repel down just in case there's somebody in there gonna go through all this effort luckily there's

[00:32:24] people in there i was like you know hope you kids all can ring the bell in gym class with ease because the only escape are the ropes uh of course i will give him more credit there was

[00:32:33] like a whole winch system so that was actually really smart uh yeah i thought that that was cool but again i don't know how you would know that anyone was in there that yeah i don't i don't it looked

[00:32:46] empty it looked very empty it's the only time i agreed with april it's like it looks like there's no one in there yeah it's like you care about everyone else but your family and i'm like yeah

[00:32:56] april finn's such a dick he's so selfish selfless what a dick uh caring about people why would you care about people and again we're treated to this underwater blue shark experience but obviously isn't where they are no it's very obviously shot deep in the ocean

[00:33:19] oh and notice self water and bus electronics do not mix it shorts everything out good to know and the bus driver i mean it was nice of him to to not just leave the kids and run off because

[00:33:35] i mean we've seen people do stupid things before in movies so yeah i was like who's gonna take care of these kids but then they did they managed to shove this entire busload of kids into

[00:33:45] one single ambulance and then said all right get them out of this movie what was on with that i mean and why didn't the bus driver go with them instead he's hit by a sign but that was after

[00:33:59] yeah he saw it felt it i knew what was gonna happen they set it up and you with movies oh yeah that line my mom always said hollywood was gonna kill me boom it's funny i mean you knew

[00:34:13] and i swear they used the same footage of him sitting beside the bridge rail and just wiping his like forehead like few he made it i think they should they showed that same scene

[00:34:28] twice uh i think there's a lot of times especially the stock footage of the sharks they use the exact same video footage a number of times like there's like the one with like the chum on the

[00:34:38] water and the shark yes jumps up and grabs it and then it like cut to a blood splatter i laughed so hard because i was like that doesn't even make sense editing wise uh no it doesn't or yeah or

[00:34:48] that deep blue deep ocean with the shark with the remoras on it they use that for a swimming pool and also a street and also yeah uh i'm like that pool's not that deep how on earth

[00:35:02] yeah no bs is so we pack all the kids into one ambulance and so get them out of this movie which you know i guess it's better than an oil refinery has a method of storyline disappearing a bunch of

[00:35:13] kids um oh yeah and if you know you know yeah yeah so we've survived more and more things they're sitting on this bridge that there's no rain it's completely dry um and what is that it's a water

[00:35:30] spout oh the thing that the itsy-butsy spider went up no well yeah but no um oh man i did wonder at that point and we haven't really talked much about nova but i did wonder at that point is nova the

[00:35:47] only one who can shoot anything because she seemed to be the only one that could not just shoot it but hit something oh well as fin has one moment with a single shot from a pistol from the ground

[00:36:03] he shoots way up into the air into the tornado and manages to completely change the trajectory of a shark being flung through the air by the rotation so there is that he's defying like gravity

[00:36:16] and physics with that shot so well one he's got some skill cease i can't even imagine he's got some level of skill if he can break physics uh but there's a couple moments like that uh

[00:36:32] like you know matt why didn't you tell us that your dad was a literal superhero who can win a game of tug-of-war against an f5 tornado um you know i was like they should have had a different

[00:36:43] person holding that door so that they could you know also throw in a little bit of a twister homage as well it's kind of a missed opportunity right yeah i mean they did have a few little

[00:36:53] homages to to other things but the biggest being what you've already talked about which is the oxygen tank in the mouth of the shark yeah yeah they just running into problems

[00:37:06] i was like why did the car blow up uh like not not every gas leak doesn't equal explosion um there's a very important like component missing what fire yeah exactly any kind of heat source

[00:37:25] whatsoever killed me is uh they were running away and then you see the you see claudia just leaping the air and then it goes boom and couldn't oh i jumped too early and then like this they're

[00:37:43] getting to the the flight school and she's like well at least the rain's easing up a bit and i was like a bit hasn't completely stopped for at least the past 20 minutes i don't even i also when the

[00:38:00] letters were flying off the hollywood sign and they were on top of the bridge moving around trying to miss them i couldn't take it i'm like are you even why are you not hiding behind the ambulance or

[00:38:16] the car i mean standing out there oh right it honestly remind me of fall guys when we played that level where the um video game controller and the star comes at you yeah yeah that's what

[00:38:32] you are just dodging objects flying at you yep oh they they get matt and some other random people right i was like i was like well these other yeah these other two unnamed flight when they're not

[00:38:49] unnamed i think he throws out a name real quick but i don't care yeah i didn't listen yeah it was like these other random like flight school students was like well they're definitely

[00:38:57] not gonna make it long well one of them literally was wearing a red shirt uh yeah but that might have been the funniest scene that was one of the funniest kills was that hammerhead did a face

[00:39:11] parking lot i mean the blood was over the top like it was i know it's like he got his arm bit off and he's like now there's blood coming out of every orifice in my face why why though um

[00:39:25] you know what else killed me the scars like um that showed his scar that's not what scars look like especially one that you got from falling off a slide at the age of two yeah it looked awfully big

[00:39:40] did you fall on top of a pitchfork or a large butcher knife have you been hanging out in the belco experiment we didn't know about it oh man oh yeah so they're all together in this hardware

[00:39:58] store to try to put together some bombs matt has got this heroic idea bass is all in on it why does the hardware store cover all their brand names on their products with tape and i know

[00:40:09] i'm just being cheeky at that point that's like i know why they couldn't afford the product i spent right and then there's this weird like claudia fin moment where they're like trying to

[00:40:22] put some kind of like family drama and like heart moment in it and she's like you know he's like why are you you know you and mom hate each other why do you love each other now she's

[00:40:33] like so bothered by them loving each other it's like now that matt's in danger you're gonna team up together like your best friends is like well that's my son i'm your daughter and he she is

[00:40:42] my bar bartender i'll do it okay we're just saying how people are related no um they're reminding us peg in case we've forgotten that this is these are the relationships because i swear they tried to

[00:40:57] get us thinking that nova has some sort of crush on fin oh yeah this nova was so in love with fin until she met his son which is such a creep like weird awkward love triangle thing yeah um

[00:41:13] i don't know yeah uh i don't i don't really yeah i'm not sure that i get it yeah but then no just claudia saying like you know but i'm your daughter and you never really pay any

[00:41:25] attention to care about me and he goes i came for you first try to remember that and it's like oh that's such a heartfelt and then i was like well yeah because you said earlier you thought matt

[00:41:35] was in tampa uh that's the only reason why you knew you weren't going to tampa you knew he was fine there oh man but matt is kind of like his father he's trying to save people which is nice i do

[00:41:52] think out of all of out of the three members of his family fin and matt had the most believable chemistry versus hit um versus fin with his daughter or his ex-wife like i think

[00:42:10] dion searing had chemistry with the actor that played matt it it seemed you know they seemed connected it was it was okay yeah the others it just seemed like they were random people

[00:42:23] thrown together in a shopping center uh so you have these bombs and they have this insane plan which we'll talk about more because i have matt kind of with nova because they work together on that

[00:42:34] a little bit so we'll get there but yeah this plan of like oh it's gonna drop bombs into the tornadoes and that'll take care of everything um so when they go up in the air to do that

[00:42:43] in the helicopter the one helicopter that's just stood there completely fine amongst the wreckage of all the other planes at this airport the tornado was like a wall spare that one helicopter because they're gonna need it but yeah they're up there and then the sharks are still getting

[00:42:59] slung down at them on the ground so then we get the iconic honestly at this point it kind of is uh it's been you know since 2013 now this movie came out this the chainsaw through the

[00:43:08] chart the shark's just coming through it's kind of cool so yeah well i'll talk about what they're doing up there but as far as for finn you know then watching what's going on fighting off sharks doing

[00:43:22] shark nato things and then they get to the uh retirement home next to the airport i did like that's like why is there an retirement home right next to the airport old people don't hear well exactly exactly that was a great mother-daughter moment

[00:43:40] but then yeah getting the old people out of the pool and into safety in the house and this lady's like what's that up there he's like that's my son well what about the woman that's in there with

[00:43:50] them doing the actual work with the bombs who i don't care uh that's my son oh man like it took him a long time to go where's nova took him way too long matt was matt who just met nova was more concerned about nova right oh no

[00:44:15] yeah so the plan was working great until like this last the third big tornado the small bombs didn't seem to work on it and then the chopper goes down and so fin takes upon himself he's like

[00:44:26] all right i'm taking the basmobile ozzy ozzy ozzy ozzy ozzy ozzy ozzy ozzy ozzy ozzy ozzy ozzy as i say that in the quiet voice of the ghost of bas going no i'm taz mania and you cut and then you know it's gone um but

[00:44:43] oh bas had some good one-liners in this movie too like at one point he's like it's time to leave kansas mate he's like yep it's a good one and yeah blow up the last one do super action hero

[00:44:59] shit and then run back through the streets it's raining sharks holy fuck it's raining sharks this is bad it's raining sharks grab your chainsaw it's raining sharks um whenever you text me from now on that is what's gonna play it's perfect he's running around

[00:45:21] directing traffic is like yes i just imagined it's like this little like thing in my head was like oh yes mr zering is here for his adr recording session is there anything that he needs to know

[00:45:31] oh yeah it'll be real easy just have him say a bunch of different variations of go over there and move for a while and then it's all done we got everything we need

[00:45:38] uh you know what he said at one point i'm going to finish this and all i could think is well obviously you didn't because there are five more movies right we had to come back to it yeah fin pushes his

[00:45:56] daughter out of the way of a great white and then he burt gummers this shit uh but not as good as burt no it is much better at burt gummering yeah but then he pulls a practically unscathed

[00:46:09] nova who we saw get thrown out of the helicopter and eaten by this shark earlier just pulls her out completely unharmed and unscathed and i was like well that is i would say jumping the shark

[00:46:19] but no that's that's beyond jumping it that's sucking it up into a giant tornado and launching it into a chainsaw yeah i wasn't sure how she'd still be alive after 10 minutes in a shark's

[00:46:32] belly you know didn't make sense no it's interesting he just took her pulse and then he just left her there that's okay fine and matt had to give her was like giving her cpr uh and i was like um

[00:46:50] did you not want to give her cpr because you didn't want april to see you giving her cpr and thinking you were kissing her i'm not sure yeah i i don't know but yeah again that's that's my notes for fin again mostly just commentary and jokes and things

[00:47:11] because get what he has and then so if you have more we can do that um oh no i think that you have covered it real well because most of my notes are little random things about different things like

[00:47:25] i feel like they went to shutterstock or pixabay to get the footage of cops on motorcycles and sharks in the water yeah i think they did well look at this my my joke opinions on some of what

[00:47:38] you just said in a little bit uh yeah so april would be next but i'm done with her also i just didn't like her i didn't like her right from the beginning she was annoying from the minute

[00:47:51] he called there till the end of the movie so yeah i no yeah no yeah i like terrarid mostly i don't i mean my real connection to terrarid is her short-lived run on scrubs but that's what i really

[00:48:07] liked her the most from but that's of course that's two in a row we're making scrubs connections i know in next week there are no scrubs connections i'm pretty confident i don't think so yeah i'm pretty confident there are no scrubs connections for next week's movie

[00:48:31] yeah so really the next major character to talk about is nofa um i'd like to know if i thought she was one of the best parts of this movie um she seemed pretty badass she could actually

[00:48:45] shoot something and it would hit it she always seemed to have a gun at the right time um she understood that if the bar fell apart she wouldn't have a job anymore so she was trying to save the

[00:48:58] bar i don't know how she plans on going about that how do you save it from a hurricane that doesn't do anything until it does and then it goes away again um a surprise ninja hurricane

[00:49:10] it just appears out of nowhere and then disappears and then comes back and disappears again um hey you better patent that because i bet someone comes out with a movie called ninja hurricane

[00:49:20] it's gonna happen so you better be working on that better get a copyright on that yeah i think the biggest arc for nova is her scar the one that i don't want to talk about my scar it's

[00:49:31] nothing now let me hint about how much i hate sharks because there's definitely a story and a reason behind that comment but i'm gonna leave it there i don't want to talk about it

[00:49:38] but i'm gonna talk about how i don't want to talk about it a lot um over and over again yeah uh i think she has this other after the bar goes to pieces and is is done she has another little

[00:49:50] line with her on there's like where do we go and she's like i'm gonna go with you because it's like i can take you home because i live on the beach it's it's obviously flooded and i was

[00:49:57] like is it though is it obvious because again the weather seems pretty nice right now and i mean you're saying this while still at the beach and it looks fine so it looks sunny even

[00:50:11] just looks beautiful i've just never seen a hurricane be like that yeah it's usually you know days and high winds and power outages and it's definitely not sunny five minutes later yeah

[00:50:27] yeah but yeah no you're gonna say something about her as this now i thought that she was competent i guess is what i would say yeah although she was very surprised and shocked

[00:50:41] by every reveal of a new family member she really was which leads me to believe did she have something going on with finn and he just hadn't told her i mean how a wife

[00:50:54] yeah and a daughter and now a son what's next you're gonna tell me you have a surprise grandma family dog for an exchange student well i mean did she know he was married before i i doesn't

[00:51:08] seem like it no no and then he had kids i mean it seems like if they were in a relationship or even if she was working at the bar she would know those basic things because you do when you

[00:51:20] work with someone you do get to know them yeah a little bit so it seemed like who are you i just pictured her saying at some point and then again clearly in the car you know she clearly wants

[00:51:34] to talk about this car but she doesn't want to you know just just embrace it talk about it because you just keep making these weird hints at something it's not necessary like

[00:51:43] talk about it or or don't uh and then that's with you know finally when she's with matt again so like you think she's got a thing for finn and then she's like oh his son never mind just

[00:51:55] like i don't know father son can you like both um and then he like kind of asks about it and again she's like i don't like to talk about it but i sure really love to refer to it vaguely

[00:52:08] to pique someone's interest only to get to say that i don't like to talk about it i love not liking to talk about it she finally does open up to him though and tell some what happened and it was a

[00:52:23] very sad story basically a very sad story and then she ends up with a get now i hate all sharks i'm like oh come on no hashtag not all sharks my god you know just takes one tragedy and someone's

[00:52:34] completely shark phobic and then you know she tells matt and he goes i think i hate sharks too he's so easily radicalized it i think he was just saying that because he had a crush on her

[00:52:45] an immediate love at first sight crush i mean and then you know what in the world of shark nato anything is possible that is true from what i understand about what happens later in this

[00:52:58] series again very loosely anything is possible i think there's like robot android shark cyborg sharks that come in at some point i don't you know um i'll see when i get there because it's gonna

[00:53:12] happen i'm gonna i'm going on this journey sometime once once i'm done with all the oscars stuff then i'm going on this journey okay i think so um so yeah so we've talked about

[00:53:26] their play in a little bit like if you're gonna drop bombs inside a tornado then shouldn't you fly i don't know above it not not directly to the side of it um yeah i i don't know as she goes we're

[00:53:42] gonna need a bigger chopper and it's like i i get the reference i see what you did there but you delivered it so flatly that it kind of just i don't know didn't it didn't hit

[00:53:51] it goes over your head and then they're like once they get in place and they're like bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs bombs

[00:54:04] everybody uh yeah i don't think it was a rave pick would have been better if it was i think so too uh yeah and then again because this is the first time i've actually watched this movie

[00:54:19] i thought she was gone and i was like wow what a way to just this character who's been here very important the whole time to just get rid of her so fast i was like well i mean i guess that's one

[00:54:27] way to avoid the weird awkward father son love triangle is just have her get eaten by a shark midair you know the strange love life future thwarted by terrible balance uh yes however um

[00:54:40] i thought it was incredibly coincidental that the shark that finn was slicing into with his chainsaw ended up being the shark that had nova inside it yeah i don't even again scientifically

[00:54:56] the rotation of the that yeah i don't even know how that happens the number of sharks that they were mm-hmm it just isn't mathematically possible again suspension of disbelief oh it's not suspended

[00:55:14] it's expelled expelled um yeah it doesn't go here anymore uh but yeah i know so she's saved and alive and the weird romantic thing is back on except i don't know probably not because it seems

[00:55:29] that you know nothing will bring x's back together like surviving a shark nato together so i guess actually finn and april are just back together family unit perfect and nova and you've forgotten

[00:55:42] the weird fifth wheel you got divorced those issues did not go away and then yeah nova just becomes the the bartender who you flirt with on the side that's now dating your son

[00:55:57] i guess yeah i mean maybe i mean i don't know you know what family units and family dynamics can get weirder than that sometimes i guess so this is sure oh man there are a couple other side characters i

[00:56:15] did want to have a couple of notes about and stuff can we talk about my favorite side character okay which is george your favorite kind of because my only thought was are we supposed to like george

[00:56:27] at all because he sucks yeah no a lot okay he does however but no what i mean is he said some ridiculous things and he he died saving a dog with his stool i mean he carried that stool

[00:56:42] and then what killed me is the stool is so important that he carried it from the bar but then he breaks the window with it and then he just throws it on the ground and runs away and i'm

[00:56:55] like if it's so important to you then why are you leaving it there oh it's because he was you know bye bye george yeah like it's over one decent thing in his life and then immediately

[00:57:09] got shocked oh no anyway um yeah he does have one great line when they're still in the bar where uh somebody says oh it's just a storm he goes just a storm it looks like a hurricane and i go yes george

[00:57:23] a hurricane's a kind of storm um oh gosh he said when they were all sitting in the in the car he's like there are sharks out there you don't have to go out there and i was just like oh wow

[00:57:40] oscar winning dialogue there yeah uh yeah so yeah i had those thoughts on george but let's talk about my favorite side character oh my gosh which is baz um oh baz was great

[00:57:55] yeah it's like we don't have a car but luckily baz has a concrete plan grand theft auto we literally steal a car for that someone else owns from a private lot yes that's the correct

[00:58:08] answer that we need at this time um yeah well let me tell you about that car that hummer it had no working speedometer it had no full dashboard and the doors opening and closing them was an issue

[00:58:23] and all i can think is oh so this hummer is this movie's bruce the shark that's funny okay that makes sense yeah and then you know so he's driving that bad boy and then we get to another

[00:58:37] issue is like how do we get through this blocked intersection don't worry your buddy baz has another crime i mean idea we're gonna turn into a CGI vehicle and fly right past the police then they

[00:58:50] won't even acknowledge us which would have been a perfect plan except stock video footage of police officers from different states still managed to notice them and went after them so

[00:59:02] i'm glad that i'm not the only one that noticed it was stock footage yeah and it looked like a peaceful street like there's nothing else there that's what i say it was just stock police officers from

[00:59:14] different parts of the country managed to you know go all coalescence it makes me want to go on like i stock photo or one of those sites and see if i can find this footage somewhere oh there's

[00:59:27] many instances of things like that um like the flooding oh my goodness um because again i was like oh there's the rain you know like finally some actual falling water to lead to you land some kind

[00:59:40] of semblance of credibility to this storm quote unquote um you know we just throw in some random footage of actual flooding and you know we're getting somewhere even if some of that footage

[00:59:52] happens to be from a park in japan or a highway in texas or somewhere in virginia there's like it's fine nobody's gonna notice that things it's not like somebody's gonna have a podcast and the

[01:00:02] ability to pause the movie and take notes and we'll notice these kind of things yeah ladies and gentlemen mr. paik alan yes um yeah i noticed a lot of those moments they were multiple things

[01:00:17] the tornadoes and the sharks that was a whole other thing on its own that was real iffy beyond real iffy the thing though that kept like coming back is when they were driving the

[01:00:34] level of the water just kept changing it was either up to the window or it was down to the tires and i yeah it was a challenge so i mentioned the other two random guys which one of them was

[01:00:49] literally wearing the red shirt like i said but then red shirt wasn't the first one of them to die his even more unremarkable friend was uh gets impaled on the truck spikes but then later yeah red

[01:01:00] shirt goes can you tell me how poor baz goes from having a shark trying to bite his leg and no wind to the wind blowing him off the truck these storms are very unpredictable uh one second to the

[01:01:16] next they're gonna do something different so who knows uh but honestly maybe the saddest of all uh r.i.p johnny waves that's johnny with an i the true hero we all needed you know yes

[01:01:30] baz died also but fuck fuckity fuck fuck fuck not johnny waves that's johnny with an i fuck ah that's character stuff i don't do you have more i think i've got maybe i'll finish up some

[01:01:45] just notes uh i think i've got most i have no other character notes yeah and then even just notes in general i think i've just covered all of them by throwing some stuff in other than

[01:01:57] just random either that's a really strong ferris wheel or that building was made of straight plaster uh again just legitimately laughed belly laughed hard at some of these like awful shots and editing

[01:02:14] things like it was so bad that it was amazing um and i've mentioned a lot of those and then also yeah just reusing footage again like especially like the shark like stock footage and like stuff

[01:02:26] it's like i've seen that shark before no there's that one again there's but yeah that's it that's all i got over and over and over and over again this movie yeah i do have a couple of casting

[01:02:47] notes and some other things that i thought i would share um so steve guttenberg was offered the role of finn shepherd i don't think he i don't think it would have fit

[01:03:04] he turned it down and ended up because he was bond that he turned it down because it became a cult it he decided to accept a role in one of sci-fi's other productions the wonderful 2015

[01:03:18] lava lancela which is a movie about giant fire breathing tarantulas that attack los angeles yeah i am aware of that movie because that was one of the ones that we featured on our bad movie

[01:03:31] trailers episode we did yes i know so terry hatcher rebecca romain and tiffany theason were approached for the role of april before terror reed was cast and lindsay lohan turned down the role of nova ian's earring did a lot of his own repelling stunts interesting which was

[01:03:56] interesting and uh many of the crew members became seasick during the principal photography and all i could think is in what water in what water i'm just in all those scenes that they shot standing on dry highways and parking lots

[01:04:17] well and there's also i mean a lot of it was done up against a green screen because even when george was in the car when he fell asleep and they woke him up like when they were trying

[01:04:28] to escape from the bar at first and getting into finn's truck and they're like well where's george they open the door and he's asleep in there it's cgi like behind him it yeah

[01:04:44] cgi circa uh late 90s maybe um yeah i i have to ask you this peak who is your favorite character in this one doesn't have to be a full character can be a side character can be anyone i mean

[01:05:04] there's no really great characters everyone's kind of just like man uh i said bass i said bass was like favorite side character uh he had some great stuff but some of the lines were dumb too um

[01:05:20] it was yeah i don't know because everybody maybe nova but then i don't know her whole like i don't like talking about my scar i just really like not like i'm talking about it and i'm gonna

[01:05:33] keep talking about it without talking about it was really obnoxious but you know what did you think the best death was uh no um hammerhead to the face with all the unnecessary bleeding because that was mine

[01:06:02] probably yeah yeah i figured i would just ask you or the like random uh flight school lady that just goes right up through the roof goodbye see you uh they introduced us to them very quickly only to get rid of them very quickly as well

[01:06:26] um yeah well pig i think that we have done it we've been through this film i'm so glad that you enjoyed it to the point that the laughter from this podcast um definitely is audible for our listeners just for laughing

[01:06:46] yeah so i'm officially now that i've watched this one i think we'll go through these so we still got some trimmer stuff to do but we might start throwing these in maybe do them back to back

[01:06:57] to end some of these seasons so we're not waiting another two seasons to get to the next one but we'll kind of sprinkle them in from season to season but i'm probably gonna like go through and

[01:07:06] just watch all of them just to see the madness at a point uh do you think riley would like them no no too nonsensical no what all he's wanting to watch right now if we're hanging on actually

[01:07:22] watching something as we've been working our way through the taylor swift era's tour concert okay that's been fun uh that seems like it'd be quite an experience compared to shark nado yeah um both magical in their own ways yes uh

[01:07:40] uh yeah uh yeah so yeah i've got nothing else to say the wind has has died down there's no more wind in the sails of this conversation no more shots of these yeah i mean which we know anything can change in half a second so

[01:07:56] might as well wrap it up now before another hurricane pops up out of nowhere uh just i do wonder what some of our fans think of this right well speak there's a hurricane

[01:08:07] of phone calls we have 700 pieces of feedback i don't know uh either that or that's all cgi none of it's real and there's no feedback we'll find out all right we do have oh my gosh look at

[01:08:20] all this feedback this is like good as we said maybe there's a ton of feedback over here i'm gonna grab this first one we're gonna check it out and then we'll we'll get going on on

[01:08:30] this whole stack down here all right let's see first we got one from kathryn says shark horror movies may be my favorite genre for guaranteeing i'll have a good time

[01:08:39] i always root for the shark in jaws deep blue sea mag and shark meadow was no exception that first scene with the fin soup poachers was so satisfying did any of these sharks asked to be sucked up into

[01:08:51] a hurricane and shot all over the city no wonder they're biting and so many of the human casualties were from collisions with the sharks rather than shark bites i love the jaws reference we're going to need a bigger chopper what are the chances that in hundreds perhaps thousands

[01:09:05] of sharks the same one would swallow two people whole the chainsaw ending is perfect and everything i want from a sci-fi shark movie and it's also the only scene that i remembered from my first watch

[01:09:16] when it was released over 10 years ago i may have seen the sequel but remember nothing about it so if it's worth covering i'll be along for the ride oh kathryn absolutely we probably will cover

[01:09:28] the sequel we've been talking about it a little bit right yeah i think we even mentioned it in recording earlier today i think we're gonna cover maybe all of them in time when we just like need a

[01:09:40] ridiculous series yes i think i mentioned like once once tremors is like done done and i'll be sad and depressed and then we can throw shark meadow in as some kind of consolation right and we

[01:09:50] start going through those be ridiculous yeah yeah we talked about a lot of those other things you mentioned too so that's that's great all right get to some more feedback oh oh oh no okay so kathryn

[01:10:04] is actually the only one the rest of this is stock footage of feedback it's just more stock footage i thought we'd escape from all the weird stock footage just thrown in but nope it even has even

[01:10:16] impacted our feedback time it's just feedback stock footage i can't use any of this oh well thank you kathryn at least for yes for being the real one and sending it in isn't there

[01:10:27] some way we can keep that stock footage from invading our space i i don't know um i mean i could call the police to arrest it but it's going to be the stock footage police that

[01:10:37] chased the car so oh no it's not going to do us any good um man paake get a chainsaw i know we're gonna have to resort to drastic measures to protect ourselves yeah yeah all right

[01:10:55] okay so if you would like to submit feedback we welcome feedback not stock footage feedback no more stock footage but we'd love to hear your feedback on past present or future movies that we
