[00:00:17] Hey everyone, welcome to the show. I'm Daphne.

[00:00:35] And I'm Pake.

[00:00:36] And this is the Run For Your Lives Podcast.

[00:00:40] This episode we are talking about the action horror film Overlord directed by Julius Avery

[00:00:45] and released November 9th, 2018.

[00:00:49] Funny last week we were talking about, oh, we need to cover that one.

[00:00:53] And we just decided to dive right into it.

[00:00:55] Why wait?

[00:00:57] Well, then we'll do it next.

[00:00:59] Yeah, because if you listened to last week's episode,

[00:01:02] yeah, it came up because we covered Quiet Place Day One, which had Joseph Quinn in it.

[00:01:09] And then I was like, what else has he done?

[00:01:11] And it led me. I was like, oh, he's in this, although he's

[00:01:14] barely in this, but he was in there for like two lines.

[00:01:20] But he was there. But then I was looking at the other cast and I was like,

[00:01:22] this movie's been on my list since 2018.

[00:01:24] So let's just do it.

[00:01:27] And then yeah, I'm glad I got around to it.

[00:01:30] Me too.

[00:01:31] I was excited to see Jacob Anderson and he was very explosive in this movie.

[00:01:37] Oh, absolutely.

[00:01:40] Also, yeah, one that I was like, oh, Jacob Anderson in this for also like two lines,

[00:01:46] three lines. You know, that's fine.

[00:01:49] Yeah, wasn't expecting it.

[00:01:52] I was excited. I was like, OK, we got some great actors in this.

[00:01:56] Yeah. And then it was over for like two thirds of the people

[00:02:02] that we see on the plane were gone within minutes of the movie.

[00:02:10] Yeah.

[00:02:12] So I'm really interested in talking with you about this one,

[00:02:15] because I'm not sure what you thought,

[00:02:18] because we never talk about what we're thinking about the movie before we start

[00:02:24] talking about it on the episode.

[00:02:26] It's like a secret.

[00:02:27] And then we, you know, it's all fresh and revealed as we talk about the characters

[00:02:34] and everything. So as I was watching this, I was thinking,

[00:02:38] I'm really wondering what Peg's thinking of this.

[00:02:41] So it's yeah, it could be an interesting conversation.

[00:02:44] It always is. I mean, it's always fun.

[00:02:47] But yeah, I'm curious.

[00:02:50] Yeah.

[00:02:51] So we'll jump in the same way that we do all the time

[00:02:55] by going over a few production notes.

[00:02:59] Was filmed at Hatfield House in Hatfield, UK,

[00:03:03] as well as Bluebell Railway in West Sussex, England

[00:03:07] and Warner Brothers Leavesden Studio in Watford, Hertford, England.

[00:03:13] Was initially reported to be the fourth movie in the Cloverfield

[00:03:17] film series, although JJ Abrams denied it.

[00:03:22] I mean, I kind of could see some of it, maybe.

[00:03:25] Yeah, that's like I kind of had that thought as well.

[00:03:30] There's I remember all the speculation of it being a Cloverfield movie

[00:03:33] when it first was like even on IMDB, I'll go and like see like upcoming stuff

[00:03:36] for like two or three years in the future for your stuff

[00:03:39] that's just being in like pre-production.

[00:03:42] And it was titled on IMDB, which again is kind of like Wikipedia

[00:03:45] where anybody can go in and edit stuff at first where it just said

[00:03:49] untitled Cloverfield movie.

[00:03:51] And so it was like, oh, and then it became Overlord and I was like, dope.

[00:03:54] And then, yeah, JJ Abrams has later stated that was never the intention

[00:03:58] that it was always intended to be its own thing.

[00:04:01] Although I wouldn't be surprised if they at least toyed with the idea

[00:04:05] of it being connected in that universe at some point of being in the Cloververse.

[00:04:09] But, you know, there had to be at least some like how could we

[00:04:13] tie it in if we decided to?

[00:04:14] But, you know, I wondered about it too because

[00:04:18] I feel like anything that JJ Abrams does that his production

[00:04:21] companies involved in or he's writing or directoring or whatever.

[00:04:26] I feel like if it's science fiction, it's instantly going to be, oh,

[00:04:32] this could be Cloverfield.

[00:04:33] Yeah, it could be the fourth movie, the fifth movie.

[00:04:36] Like this could be part of that universe.

[00:04:38] And I do think it kind of fits.

[00:04:40] I feel like it could have fit within it.

[00:04:44] This was the first R rated film that Bad Robot did.

[00:04:48] Hmm.

[00:04:50] It did win Best in Metagraphy and Sound Design at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival.

[00:04:57] The box office, it grows 41.7 million.

[00:05:02] However, the budget for the movie was 38 million.

[00:05:05] Not exactly setting the world on fire.

[00:05:08] Mm-mm.

[00:05:09] Was 110 minutes long.

[00:05:12] Paik, bring us that special synopsis.

[00:05:15] All right.

[00:05:16] This one's going to give a lot away.

[00:05:17] So be careful if you haven't seen it.

[00:05:19] A small group of American soldiers find horror behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day.

[00:05:25] Um, I think it's accurate.

[00:05:28] I mean, horror, absolutely terrifying.

[00:05:33] Oh God.

[00:05:36] Man, there was a lot.

[00:05:40] Despicable things happened in this movie.

[00:05:44] Like, uh-uh.

[00:05:46] But there were also things that they kept out of it, I think to...

[00:05:52] I mean, it's supposed to be like D-Day.

[00:05:55] They're supposed to be fighting the Nazis, but they didn't use swastikas at all

[00:05:59] in the movie.

[00:06:01] No, they didn't.

[00:06:02] Which makes me wonder if it's an alternate timeline situation.

[00:06:07] Do you think this is some multi-verse?

[00:06:09] I don't know.

[00:06:10] Again, it ties into this bad robot.

[00:06:12] Like, if we're going to do a Cloverfield thing.

[00:06:14] Because we haven't covered Cloverfield Paradox yet, but...

[00:06:18] No.

[00:06:18] But that's...

[00:06:19] But we should.

[00:06:20] We should do it.

[00:06:20] Even though it wasn't great.

[00:06:22] I didn't love it.

[00:06:23] Well, no.

[00:06:24] We might as well finish it up.

[00:06:25] Again, as we did a couple episodes ago, sometimes bad movies are still fun episodes.

[00:06:30] So...

[00:06:30] Yeah.

[00:06:31] We can do that.

[00:06:32] Yeah.

[00:06:33] But yeah, because I've only seen it once when it first dropped on Netflix that night

[00:06:37] after the Super Bowl.

[00:06:38] I remember that.

[00:06:40] But yeah, I think that from what I remember, like it deals with kind of

[00:06:44] alternate dimensions and multi-verse and stuff like that.

[00:06:47] So, you know, if...

[00:06:49] Again, even though I know JJ Abrams said this has never intended that way,

[00:06:52] but then you bring it up and I'm like,

[00:06:53] but it could have been in that regard as like, well, there's no,

[00:06:56] you know, certain things like they changed some of our usual historical timeline up a little bit.

[00:07:01] Like maybe it was.

[00:07:03] Yeah, they did.

[00:07:05] It was...

[00:07:06] Yeah, it was interesting.

[00:07:08] I mean, I noticed right away they weren't using the emblem that we've come to connect

[00:07:15] Nazism with.

[00:07:18] But there was so much more to this than...

[00:07:21] You know, really the only symbol we see is like the SS emblem that was on

[00:07:27] Waffner's lighter.

[00:07:28] They were using different things in place of it basically.

[00:07:32] Actually, I think that's a good thing.

[00:07:34] But I wasn't expecting it and it wasn't something I honed in on, really.

[00:07:39] Yeah.

[00:07:39] Yeah, no, I didn't even think about it till you just mentioned it.

[00:07:42] Yeah, you're right.

[00:07:43] Yeah, there were too many other things going on and the way this movie started,

[00:07:47] it was like chaos and I was just sitting there thinking, okay, I don't know who,

[00:07:56] what people died on the plane before they even took like jumped out.

[00:08:03] And I'm like, I don't know who's dead.

[00:08:04] I don't know who's alive.

[00:08:06] I don't know what's going on.

[00:08:08] Let's get to the ground so I can figure it out.

[00:08:11] It's sounding like alive Steve.

[00:08:15] Exactly.

[00:08:17] But that's not how we roll everyone realized, but I just wanted to get that out of

[00:08:22] out from the beginning that I just didn't...

[00:08:27] I knew what was happening, but it just was so chaotic that I was really just thinking

[00:08:35] I don't know who's alive or dead because...

[00:08:38] And that's on purpose, I think.

[00:08:39] It is a war movie and so I think the best of those just throw you right in the middle of the

[00:08:46] action and the chaos and the tension and they kind of leave you where the soldiers are at,

[00:08:51] where you're like, I don't know what the fuck is going on.

[00:08:53] Right.

[00:08:53] If anyone's dying it's pure chaos and fear and adrenaline.

[00:08:57] I think that's definitely on purpose that that's what they want to do is just throw

[00:09:00] you right in and let you kind of just pick up the pieces as you're going.

[00:09:05] Yeah, and that's basically really what we did.

[00:09:07] And we get to see this film through the eyes of private first class Edward Boyce who looks terrified.

[00:09:17] Like he is going into a situation that is scary.

[00:09:23] He's got to jump out of a plane, all these things that are going through his mind.

[00:09:26] I mean, he doesn't really jump out of the plane.

[00:09:28] No, he doesn't.

[00:09:29] He gets pushed out of the plane.

[00:09:32] But it saved his life.

[00:09:34] Oh yeah, absolutely.

[00:09:35] He was on his way sliding down into the fire and he was grabbed and pushed out of the plane.

[00:09:42] Yeah.

[00:09:42] And that saved his life.

[00:09:44] But we learned that like three months ago, he's only been in this three months.

[00:09:49] Like he probably didn't finish training that long ago.

[00:09:52] So this is 1944 World War II, the draft, those kind of things where yeah, he's just kind of

[00:09:58] pulled in and then this mission comes up and this is again like the day before D-Day where

[00:10:03] American troops and forces are moving in.

[00:10:06] We're trying to end this war and take down Hitler and his regime.

[00:10:11] So yeah, it was just throw everybody that we have at it to make sure we get done.

[00:10:15] So yeah, he was very unprepared in a lot of ways.

[00:10:19] Yeah, he definitely was.

[00:10:20] I felt for him because they kind of picked on him too because he just seemed like he was green.

[00:10:26] He had no experience.

[00:10:28] He was brand new and then he explained later that he'd only been in.

[00:10:33] Like three months ago, he was mowing his lawn and that's when the letter came.

[00:10:37] Yeah.

[00:10:38] But yeah, before we get to you and pushed out, which I think as we're talking about,

[00:10:41] yeah, Boyce is going to be our main character we'll follow.

[00:10:45] We'll talk about first.

[00:10:46] But yeah, a lot of the cast just like we get to see everybody in the plane.

[00:10:50] I guess we're covering it because I mentioned it last week and like read the names that

[00:10:54] were in it.

[00:10:55] And even then, I was still excited to see him on screen is even like we mentioned Joseph Quinn

[00:10:59] and Jacob Anderson, even if they weren't there for long, they were there.

[00:11:03] But yeah, Wyatt Russell as Corporal Lewis Ford, the explosive ex explosives expert

[00:11:08] and Corporal kind of leading this team.

[00:11:10] That was cool to say.

[00:11:11] I knew, you know, Wyatt Russell, anymore of him, Jovanna depot as Edward Boyce,

[00:11:17] which I was trying to remember I'd seen him before.

[00:11:19] And then I was like, oh, yeah, he played Larry Underwood in the newer adaptation

[00:11:23] of The Stand that came out a few years ago.

[00:11:26] Yep.

[00:11:26] I was like, oh, yeah, that's him.

[00:11:28] And then, of course, John McGarrow or Majaro, not sure exactly, but that is Lyle Tibbet

[00:11:35] who at first is just kind of a dick.

[00:11:38] But that's John Majaro.

[00:11:40] I mean, I don't know for him specifically, but like I'm sure he's a great guy.

[00:11:44] But the characters he plays and a lot of things like that's just he's good at that role,

[00:11:48] for sure.

[00:11:50] Yeah.

[00:11:50] Yeah.

[00:11:51] He's been in a bunch of different things.

[00:11:54] Umbrella Academy, Orange is the New Black.

[00:11:57] Yeah.

[00:11:58] Because I've got like he's like an extra character that I've got stuff on.

[00:12:01] But yeah, I'll talk about, you know, again, I don't know if it's McGarrow,

[00:12:05] Majaro, I'm bad with that.

[00:12:07] I could have looked it up, but it looks like McGarrow.

[00:12:10] I think it's McGarrow.

[00:12:12] But yeah, but he's like, skeezy, scummy characters on a lot of things,

[00:12:15] especially I mean, is it spoiler at this point?

[00:12:18] It's like season one.

[00:12:19] Umbrella Academy, like his character in that, not great.

[00:12:24] No.

[00:12:25] But then I was thinking about it.

[00:12:25] I was like, I guess he wasn't necessarily

[00:12:27] scummy in Orange is the New Black or in the Oscar Best Picture nominee of last year,

[00:12:34] past lives.

[00:12:35] He was also in that.

[00:12:37] And I don't think he was really scummy in either of those,

[00:12:40] but he's not particularly likable either.

[00:12:42] He's just there's something about his characters that you're like,

[00:12:45] I just don't like this guy.

[00:12:46] I am.

[00:12:48] Yeah, he's an interesting character here.

[00:12:51] And we'll talk about him a bit later.

[00:12:54] But he's, yeah, you don't, I feel like you don't like him at first.

[00:13:00] And then by the end, you're kind of like, okay, all right, you're okay.

[00:13:06] Yeah.

[00:13:06] Oh, well, I'll talk about my, my Tibet farts.

[00:13:11] At some point.

[00:13:12] I have a feeling you might relate to him in some comedic ways.

[00:13:18] Yeah, we'll see.

[00:13:20] But yeah, so covering that, yeah, we're talking about planes going down.

[00:13:24] Lots of guys just getting riddled with bullets and lit up and

[00:13:27] boys ends up getting pushed out to save his life.

[00:13:29] And it was just intense.

[00:13:30] Like I said, they threw you right in.

[00:13:32] Whereas I like that following him, falling through the air upside down,

[00:13:36] trying to get his shoot open, bombs going off,

[00:13:39] planes exploding, bodies falling around him.

[00:13:42] And then he gets it open late, but it's like good news.

[00:13:46] He landed in water that broke his fast fall.

[00:13:48] Bad news, he landed in water, which while he's covered with all kinds of

[00:13:53] heavy equipment and stuff all over him, sinking to the bottom.

[00:13:56] So kind of 50-50 there on how good or bad that was.

[00:14:02] Well, and I knew when he was finally like, he cut himself free

[00:14:05] and he was going to the service.

[00:14:07] I'm like, oh my God, the parachute's there.

[00:14:09] That's not going to be pretty because it's going to suffocate him

[00:14:13] unless he's on top of it, which he figured it out.

[00:14:17] I was impressed simply because I felt like he was green.

[00:14:24] I felt like he didn't...

[00:14:26] He hadn't had a lot of training or he hadn't been

[00:14:30] out on missions like this.

[00:14:32] So it was going to be difficult, but he did kind of get that part of it together.

[00:14:38] But I feel like the first third of the movie, he was getting things together.

[00:14:43] Like he was getting himself together because there were things happening

[00:14:46] that he couldn't control and his first instinct is to help people.

[00:14:51] Like he wants to help people.

[00:14:53] I think that's something we saw throughout the whole movie is

[00:14:57] he has such empathy for others.

[00:15:01] Yeah, that's definitely his driving force, but I mean, not really downfall.

[00:15:08] It's one of the few that survives the whole movie, but it definitely puts him in some different

[00:15:12] situations throughout the movie.

[00:15:14] Is this desire to help?

[00:15:16] I mean, luckily Ford was there with him because first thing that happens,

[00:15:20] they're on the ground and he sees his sergeant and he's going to go and try to help the sergeant

[00:15:26] who's got all these German soldiers standing down at him

[00:15:31] and Ford manages to catch him in time and stops him and pulls him back.

[00:15:35] So then the sergeant has gone down and Ford is like, look,

[00:15:38] there was no chance for him anyway.

[00:15:41] All those, we need to protect ourselves because the mission is still at stake.

[00:15:44] That's the main thing.

[00:15:45] We still have a job to do and we're still capable of doing it.

[00:15:48] So that's the main focus.

[00:15:50] And Ford was really, I think, instrumental in helping him get it together

[00:15:59] Yeah.

[00:15:59] Because he really wanted to just go rogue.

[00:16:02] He was thinking about if I was at home and I saw someone in trouble,

[00:16:09] I'd try to help them.

[00:16:10] But this is fire from home.

[00:16:12] You're in an impossible situation.

[00:16:16] And it was watching him fall was, I mean, just the chaos around him.

[00:16:24] It was incredibly crazy.

[00:16:27] And even after the sergeant is killed and him and Ford are starting to walk,

[00:16:34] you see the dead bodies in the trees hanging from parachutes.

[00:16:39] And it's very eerie when you look at that.

[00:16:43] Yeah.

[00:16:44] But yeah, they balance each other well.

[00:16:46] There's the humanity of Boyce and then Ford being very mission driven,

[00:16:51] still very soldier, corporal leader of this mode

[00:16:55] where, yeah, it's like we've got this Nazi radio tower that we've got to dismantle and take care of.

[00:17:01] That's the main goal.

[00:17:02] And then that driving force getting them where they're going mixed with Boyce,

[00:17:07] kind of getting them involved, not really the serge, but then

[00:17:11] him getting involved with the Nazi captain because he can't stand by and watch him

[00:17:18] as he's being assaulting Chloe.

[00:17:23] And that he can't just stand back and let whatever happen, he's going to get involved.

[00:17:28] And then even later, I'm jumping ahead and we'll circle background and stuff.

[00:17:32] But even we're going not just to the radio tower, but we're going to take care of this

[00:17:37] lab and we're going to save Paul.

[00:17:39] We're going to say these are all things like we're, he defies his corporals.

[00:17:42] At that point, he's like, no, we I'm doing this.

[00:17:46] If this is the only thing, this is the last chance for us to do anything.

[00:17:49] I'm making sure I'm doing the right thing.

[00:17:50] And he never, he never loses that.

[00:17:52] And I do like that.

[00:17:53] Yeah, me too.

[00:17:55] And he saw a lot.

[00:17:56] I feel like he was exposed to so many things,

[00:18:00] like witnessing the sergeant dying, Dawson blowing up in front of him,

[00:18:04] all the things that he saw when he was under the tower,

[00:18:07] and then Woffner attempting to rape Chloe.

[00:18:12] Like he sees all these things.

[00:18:13] And I think it, I feel like it helps drive him to the point where he

[00:18:22] deals with everything that, you know, he's affected by it all.

[00:18:26] Yeah.

[00:18:27] And it kind of just gets him to pull it together and be like,

[00:18:33] we can't just go blow that up and leave the rest there.

[00:18:36] We've got to go do it all.

[00:18:37] We have to, like you said, we got to take care of all of it.

[00:18:40] Yeah.

[00:18:40] You know.

[00:18:41] And I loved that he got so strong with Ford about saving Paul.

[00:18:47] He would not have done that earlier in the movie.

[00:18:50] Like he didn't have it in him, but seeing everything he saw,

[00:18:54] I feel like when he went under, he didn't intend to go under the tower,

[00:18:58] but when he went under the tower and saw everything that was there,

[00:19:04] especially like the burning of the test subjects,

[00:19:09] I feel like he just, it made him realize this is serious.

[00:19:14] I've got to, we have to, you know, it's not just the mission.

[00:19:19] We've got to close this down.

[00:19:20] These people are being terrorized.

[00:19:23] And so he's looking at like the greater good beyond just the mission.

[00:19:30] And I think Chloe will talk about her, I'm sure too,

[00:19:34] but is very important without her.

[00:19:37] I don't think any of this would have worked out as well as it did or at all.

[00:19:41] And Boyce is a big part of that is the fact that he knows French.

[00:19:45] He learned it from, did you say his grandmother?

[00:19:49] Yeah, Louisiana.

[00:19:50] Well, you know, like families in Louisiana, which is very Creole French.

[00:19:53] But then like his family is from Haiti, very French.

[00:19:57] And so yeah, that was great because then he could be that translator

[00:20:01] with that they ended up not really needing.

[00:20:04] But which I love that about Chloe will talk about her too.

[00:20:07] But but at least it's kind of that in and then that helps them set themselves up.

[00:20:11] But then even we're with Paul, he has this kind of connection with Paul.

[00:20:15] I will say I love the scene.

[00:20:18] The few column scenes that we get in this movie, there's not a lot.

[00:20:22] Boyce, he's sitting at the table and Paul rolls him the baseball.

[00:20:25] And when he sniffs it, the look on the kid's face like what?

[00:20:29] But then just the way that his eyes lit up as he in French says back to him,

[00:20:34] it just reminds me of home.

[00:20:35] And it was just a very beautiful little moment.

[00:20:37] Paul was a catalyst for a couple of things.

[00:20:43] I mean, no child should ever see or be around their mother being sexually assaulted.

[00:20:51] And that's exactly sister.

[00:20:52] But is it as Oh, it's I'm sorry.

[00:20:55] But she's their parents were were killed by the Nazis here.

[00:20:59] So I mean, she's she's mother to him now at this point.

[00:21:02] Yeah, to raise her little brother.

[00:21:04] Yeah, but no one should be around that like that's traumatizing.

[00:21:08] And you get the impression this this has happened before.

[00:21:12] Oh, yeah, this isn't the first time.

[00:21:15] Oh, he knew to go upstairs and go cover his his ears and his eyes and stay away.

[00:21:19] Yeah.

[00:21:19] Yeah.

[00:21:20] I'm sure that Chloe had that discussion with him.

[00:21:23] Like this man is here.

[00:21:24] You need to go do this.

[00:21:26] Mm hmm.

[00:21:27] Go and and hide and don't let you know, don't listen.

[00:21:31] Yeah.

[00:21:33] And we'll get to talk about Waffner later and I have some strong thoughts on him.

[00:21:39] He's yeah.

[00:21:41] Back on voice with yeah, that's his that person like helping people drive is

[00:21:47] they're hiding up in the attic, but he's seeing this happen and

[00:21:49] he's not okay with this rapey behavior.

[00:21:52] And like I get it.

[00:21:55] I agree with him, but also like I can put myself in the shoes of Ford being like

[00:22:00] we have to be smart.

[00:22:01] Don't blow your cover like this.

[00:22:03] The mission is still paramount or like tantamount to what we need to do.

[00:22:06] Don't blow it over.

[00:22:08] You get it letting your feelings get in the way.

[00:22:11] Of course he still does and they handled it well.

[00:22:13] They did was still right, but you can see, you know, it does risk the mission.

[00:22:17] But it was a calculated risk to where you can see Ford is also happy.

[00:22:21] He got to knock the dude the fuck out because

[00:22:22] Oh my God, you know, Ford.

[00:22:25] He's tough.

[00:22:27] Built Ford tough.

[00:22:28] No, but it's podcasting.

[00:22:33] Sponsored by Ford.

[00:22:35] Right.

[00:22:35] But I don't think he's heartless.

[00:22:37] He's just he's a professional like he does what he needs to do.

[00:22:43] But you can see that like he's he's got a heart.

[00:22:46] He's a human being who definitely cares and that definitely comes at the end

[00:22:49] of his story here in this movie really see

[00:22:52] that biggest sacrifice he makes.

[00:22:55] But like so it's interesting because I really like maybe it's just kind of like

[00:22:59] why Russell possibly but also know like he's just as an actor,

[00:23:03] like he puts a lot into these characters to where you're like

[00:23:06] Ford is definitely a guy that like is no nonsense.

[00:23:10] Strictly business is going to make some sacrifices and risks and let things happen

[00:23:15] in order, you know, to not jeopardize the mission.

[00:23:19] But like he's also a good person who's got a good heart that just like but he's

[00:23:25] you know, mission first oriented.

[00:23:27] That's kind of who he is.

[00:23:29] Well, and he's also thinking that the D-Day is coming and they need that to be destroyed

[00:23:36] so that they could storm Norma Day.

[00:23:38] It sounds awful, but it's just like yeah,

[00:23:40] what's happening in this house with this woman and this boy?

[00:23:42] Not good, but like there's also much more important things with a lot of other lives

[00:23:48] at stake right now.

[00:23:49] Right. So you have to compartmentalize what's happening and look at the bigger picture.

[00:23:57] But it was hard. Boys couldn't do it.

[00:24:00] Yeah.

[00:24:01] Because I think he took the situation where they ran into her in the woods.

[00:24:07] I think he looked at it as they were having to hide out of her house.

[00:24:13] They brought her into this.

[00:24:16] And I think he took a certain amount of responsibility for that.

[00:24:21] And in return also felt responsible for her in other ways as well.

[00:24:28] Like he wanted to protect her from this terrible,

[00:24:33] Euron Greyjoy terrible character.

[00:24:39] But yeah, so the mission continues on.

[00:24:42] It doesn't put anything at risk really that far.

[00:24:45] Boys heads out really to do just some kind of like recon and push forward a little bit.

[00:24:51] But then there's a dog that shows up and running from the dog, he winds up

[00:24:57] in a truck full of dead bodies behind enemy lines.

[00:25:01] I thought he was going to find his friends or something in those dead bodies.

[00:25:05] I was convinced, but there was none of that.

[00:25:09] Yeah, no.

[00:25:11] The dead bodies being trucked into the church, not out.

[00:25:16] For reasons.

[00:25:17] Reasons that will disclose at a later time.

[00:25:21] But yeah, but he's in there and he does.

[00:25:23] He sees some just really fucked up shit.

[00:25:25] So a lot of really terrible things going on.

[00:25:28] I'll talk more about the Nazis and some of their stuff, what was going on.

[00:25:31] But I mean, clearly we're hearing about like experiments and the doctor with his

[00:25:35] quote unquote science and things going on where, yeah, I mean just like

[00:25:40] before we even know what it is, it's like there's horrible

[00:25:43] human experiments and genetics, something going on like whatever's happening.

[00:25:47] It's not good.

[00:25:48] And he sees a lot of really disturbing things, but he also finds Jacob.

[00:25:55] Thank goodness.

[00:25:56] I was happy for him finding him because

[00:25:59] he was concerned about him from the beginning.

[00:26:01] Yeah.

[00:26:02] When they were jumping out of the plane.

[00:26:04] I think he was really his only friend and

[00:26:07] Ford convinced him that he was probably dead and just kept him focused on the mission,

[00:26:11] which is what they needed to do.

[00:26:14] But for him to get there and find him,

[00:26:17] I didn't know how he was going to get him off that table.

[00:26:20] Yeah.

[00:26:21] Because I thought that that thing that was plugged into him was so much more invasive than it

[00:26:25] ended up.

[00:26:26] It wasn't as bad as we thought, but yeah, it looks

[00:26:30] rough.

[00:26:31] I spent most of his movie thinking Jacob was not going to make it out of the lab.

[00:26:34] And then even after that, I was like, oh, something's he's infected with something.

[00:26:37] And he's in the house.

[00:26:38] Yes, me too.

[00:26:38] And then even that.

[00:26:40] And then I'm waiting while him and Tibbit are setting up outside shooting.

[00:26:43] I was like, he's going to get shot here.

[00:26:45] I was just constantly in fear that Jacob wasn't going to make it.

[00:26:49] So I'm glad he did.

[00:26:51] I thought the same thing.

[00:26:53] I thought he was infected.

[00:26:55] Like that's what I thought is his eyes were going to start turning red

[00:26:58] and he was going to start convulsing.

[00:27:03] But luckily, we'll talk about that later.

[00:27:07] It was crazy.

[00:27:07] I mean, he got in there, found Jacob, manages to get him out.

[00:27:10] He finds this sewer passageway, which comes in handy later for sure, a couple of ways.

[00:27:17] But yeah, then they come in as the team is kind of like, yeah, it's been too long

[00:27:21] is he not going to come back?

[00:27:22] But he does.

[00:27:23] He busts in sounding like a madman when he comes in trying to spout off all of these

[00:27:28] horrors he's just saying.

[00:27:29] And he's like, there's this and this and this.

[00:27:32] She had no body just ahead, but she's alive.

[00:27:35] It's like what the hell is he talking about?

[00:27:37] The French woman.

[00:27:38] Oh my God.

[00:27:39] The talking head.

[00:27:40] She's just she just keeps repeating.

[00:27:47] And that means stop, please.

[00:27:50] The poor I mean, she was just ahead in the spine.

[00:27:53] How she was alive, I just don't know.

[00:27:56] I don't know how that's helping their cause because it's clear like he's watching them

[00:28:01] like inject the corpse there and then it comes back and they sew it away.

[00:28:06] It's like, OK, they're reanimating corpses.

[00:28:09] Like they are looking for zombie soldiers.

[00:28:12] That's what they're trying to do is and then as Waffner says later, it's like the

[00:28:15] thousand year regime needs thousand year soldiers where it's like if our soldiers

[00:28:19] can never die and are just immortal zombies, then we can't be stopped.

[00:28:23] That's their plan.

[00:28:25] So I don't know.

[00:28:26] I though we do know that they can.

[00:28:28] It just takes a lot.

[00:28:30] A lot.

[00:28:31] Yeah.

[00:28:32] So this woman who's just ahead in a spinal column.

[00:28:35] I don't know what she would be to the cause other than I mean, it's just experiments.

[00:28:40] You know, she's a beta test to get to wherever they got.

[00:28:43] Who knows just saying how long you can keep something alive.

[00:28:47] But who knows what kind of just disgusting experiments they were really

[00:28:51] doing down there besides that or to get to that.

[00:28:53] Yeah, it was terrible.

[00:28:55] And you could tell honestly, Boyce was horrified at the things he was saying.

[00:29:00] It's like going through a house of horrors, basically.

[00:29:03] You turn a quarter and you think that, oh, it can't get any worse than it does.

[00:29:09] And yeah, he finally luckily is able to get Jacob out of there.

[00:29:17] Yeah.

[00:29:18] And he brings the syringe with the red serum in it.

[00:29:23] Not really knowing what it can do other than he saw it reanimate corpses.

[00:29:27] Yeah.

[00:29:28] And he made a mistake.

[00:29:29] I think he made a mistake with his decision.

[00:29:32] Yeah.

[00:29:32] But yeah, there's just this wanting to help.

[00:29:34] He can't stand because that, yeah, they get back and Waffner has been, you know,

[00:29:39] taken up and tied up.

[00:29:40] And that's again where we see Ford like he's just somebody you don't want to fuck with.

[00:29:44] No, definitely not.

[00:29:46] He's tough.

[00:29:47] He's formidable for sure.

[00:29:49] And with all of that, you know, it's almost too much is again, we're seeing Boyce kind of

[00:29:58] not necessarily agreeing with Ford and he tries to step up and gets punched and knocked down and

[00:30:04] removed from the room for his efforts.

[00:30:07] And so later again, when we see him step up to him and defy him the last time because,

[00:30:11] you know, Waffner with all the stuff that happened with him,

[00:30:14] he was, you know, some information was beaten out of him.

[00:30:17] And then he's an intelligent person.

[00:30:20] He's a captain for a reason as we see him get one up on Chase.

[00:30:25] And and then Boyce making that decision again, trying to help somebody.

[00:30:29] And that's what he did with Chase.

[00:30:30] He didn't want to watch Chase die in front of you.

[00:30:32] No, maybe I can fix it.

[00:30:34] Didn't end up being the best fix just caused some more problems.

[00:30:39] But he's trying.

[00:30:40] But then it did give him that emphasis or that, you know,

[00:30:46] push to where when Waffner kidnaps Paul to escape and catches a bullet from Ford.

[00:30:52] We're not sure how bad yet.

[00:30:55] But he takes off with the kid and that's why Boyce is like,

[00:30:58] that's when he's finally defiant with the orders.

[00:31:01] He says, no, I'm going after the kid.

[00:31:05] They're here because of us.

[00:31:07] That's the reason this happened again.

[00:31:08] He's that connection.

[00:31:09] He's built like we owe it to them.

[00:31:12] And I love that Tibet is on board with that, you know, because it's convenient.

[00:31:16] It's not because he has secretly built this bond with this kid that he'll deny to anyone at

[00:31:20] any chance, but you know, it's just because it's convenient.

[00:31:24] Yeah. Ford just wants to blow up the tower and leave everything else.

[00:31:30] Like he hasn't he hasn't seen what's going on underneath.

[00:31:34] He only has Boyce's like, you know, explaining of what he saw.

[00:31:42] Yeah. Yeah.

[00:31:44] Which I guess Chloe, Chloe wants to go after her brother.

[00:31:47] She just flips over one of the bodies and pulls the gun in some bombs.

[00:31:50] It's just like, oh, she's in murder mode.

[00:31:53] Way to go Nazis.

[00:31:55] You pissed her off.

[00:31:56] Yeah.

[00:31:57] Fucked with the wrong kid.

[00:31:58] Now you're in for it.

[00:32:00] She was ready and she honestly will talk about her too.

[00:32:05] We'll talk about her later.

[00:32:08] I loved that Boyce stood up to Ford and insisted and got things changed around.

[00:32:15] And especially with what happens with Ford at the end,

[00:32:19] you know it was the right thing and I think he knew it was the right thing.

[00:32:22] Yeah.

[00:32:23] At that point that they had to do what they did.

[00:32:27] Yeah.

[00:32:27] That it was more than just the tower that needed to go.

[00:32:31] Everything needed to go.

[00:32:32] It becomes a three pronged approach.

[00:32:34] Okay, we take down the tower, we save Paul and Boyce is like,

[00:32:39] and then we destroy everything that's going on in that lab.

[00:32:43] We do not let that get out.

[00:32:44] We do not let them have that.

[00:32:47] And that plan, so cool.

[00:32:49] It was honestly incredible.

[00:32:52] Little sequence of them really getting that plan set underway.

[00:32:55] We get the, I was trying to come up with some Matt Smith pun

[00:32:58] because he vaguely looked like him, but there was nothing.

[00:33:01] I couldn't come up with anything.

[00:33:03] Oh, I couldn't stand him.

[00:33:05] Yeah, just the twat waffle.

[00:33:07] I mean, he's a henchman.

[00:33:09] He's basically one of Woffner's henchmen.

[00:33:11] His head henchman.

[00:33:14] Basically.

[00:33:15] And yeah, they get him to chase Chloe so that they can jump him

[00:33:18] and rig him to blow.

[00:33:21] That was such a cool scene, the sidecar full of explosives

[00:33:24] and the grenade in his mouth that the pin got pulled

[00:33:27] by removing the duct tape.

[00:33:29] I was like, that is fucking diabolical.

[00:33:31] It's amazing.

[00:33:32] And amazing because should that much death be cheered for?

[00:33:37] Yes, because remember these are Nazis.

[00:33:39] So the worst things happening imaginable to them is good.

[00:33:43] The kids, remember.

[00:33:45] And Jacob's up there just killing it with the machine gun.

[00:33:47] So that was great.

[00:33:48] He did.

[00:33:49] He was on it with that machine gun, despite everything he had been through.

[00:33:53] And this is a short period of time.

[00:33:55] Let's remember.

[00:33:57] Hours.

[00:33:58] An hour later.

[00:34:00] He bounced back and he was ready to go.

[00:34:06] Him and Tippett were just, you know, they were on it.

[00:34:09] They were taking care of everything.

[00:34:10] Everyone had their role.

[00:34:12] They knew what it was.

[00:34:13] The plan was working.

[00:34:14] Yeah.

[00:34:15] And so as all that distraction and fire and stuff's going on,

[00:34:19] Boyce is sneaking himself,

[00:34:21] Ford and Chloe back into the church through that sewer.

[00:34:25] Oh, which yeah, Chloe's not waiting for their plan.

[00:34:27] Ford knew that wasn't the case.

[00:34:28] And she goes off and yeah, she's going after Paul.

[00:34:30] And as we see from the two soldiers she runs into,

[00:34:33] she's not fucking around.

[00:34:34] Nope.

[00:34:35] Zero fucks are left.

[00:34:37] Yeah.

[00:34:39] And she does get her little brother back.

[00:34:43] But Boyce is staying behind because he's got to end what is going on down here.

[00:34:48] Like that was his mindset.

[00:34:50] We're doing this.

[00:34:52] He's going to fight.

[00:34:52] He's rigging the place to blow.

[00:34:54] The scientist comes up, you know, Boyce won't kill a mouse,

[00:34:57] but he will kill a Nazi scientist, which-

[00:34:59] Yes, he will.

[00:35:00] I mean, let's be honest.

[00:35:01] That's that matters less than a mouse.

[00:35:03] Yes.

[00:35:05] Because this is who he has become.

[00:35:08] Yeah.

[00:35:09] He has been faced and seen such evil that he realizes that you can't-

[00:35:17] sometimes you have to do it.

[00:35:19] You have to do the tough jobs because this can't be allowed to continue.

[00:35:24] That scientist cannot be allowed to escape and create anything else.

[00:35:28] He can't.

[00:35:29] And then as he lets Ford deal with Wachtner, again,

[00:35:32] a lot of these other characters that we will break down more in time.

[00:35:37] Yeah, that stuff goes on.

[00:35:40] He does what he needs to do, gets back to the tower, rigs that to go and blow,

[00:35:45] and the whole place starts coming down.

[00:35:46] And the escape sequence of him running through the hallways is different things

[00:35:51] were blowing up and crumbling and falling.

[00:35:55] And then as he gets outside the door blowing up

[00:35:57] and then the whole place coming down in the shockwave coming over the ground.

[00:36:02] Such a cool action packed explosions, tints, cinematography.

[00:36:07] I was like, that entire sequence was just beautiful.

[00:36:10] Bravo.

[00:36:11] They did a great shot.

[00:36:12] It was so well shot.

[00:36:14] They did.

[00:36:15] And you'll be happy to know and I'll reveal more as we talk through some of the other parts.

[00:36:22] They used as much practical effects as possible.

[00:36:26] They did not.

[00:36:27] They did not want to use CGI because the director even said using practical effects as much as possible.

[00:36:39] Yeah, she should always do that.

[00:36:41] Yes.

[00:36:42] It's going to be better.

[00:36:43] Yes.

[00:36:44] That's our official stance on practical effects.

[00:36:47] We support it 100%.

[00:36:48] Yeah, but voice gets back to the village, gets back to the team that's there.

[00:36:54] And then I was like, yay, Tibbit is fine, which at the beginning of the movie,

[00:36:57] I didn't think I was going to say.

[00:37:00] He grew on me for sure.

[00:37:03] And then Paul's also excited to see voice return.

[00:37:05] We get that.

[00:37:07] And then I just kind of liked the ending with voice where again we'll talk more about

[00:37:11] Ford specifically.

[00:37:12] But what Ford does there and voice honors that by as he's talking to the other

[00:37:21] general sergeant, whatever.

[00:37:23] He just doesn't tell the truth.

[00:37:25] He can just completely omit that stuff.

[00:37:27] He's like, is there anything else down there?

[00:37:28] He's like, nope.

[00:37:29] He's not going to reveal anything about these experiments and the zombie serum or

[00:37:33] whatever all that because like Ford had said to him, our side shouldn't have that

[00:37:37] shit either.

[00:37:38] It will stay buried down here with me.

[00:37:40] And that's exactly what voice honors.

[00:37:42] It's true.

[00:37:44] And I like that he did that.

[00:37:47] The arc that voice went through from beginning to end of this movie was one of

[00:37:53] the biggest arcs I think I've seen just because he seemed so terrified to this

[00:38:00] point where he's come into his own in the span of a couple of what two days.

[00:38:06] He's come into his own.

[00:38:08] If even like yeah.

[00:38:10] Yeah, to be a hero.

[00:38:12] You know and do the things that need to be done.

[00:38:15] Even given Ford credit for the play in and even though it was like a team effort on

[00:38:22] things, he gave Ford a lot of the credit when he was talking with that leader.

[00:38:29] And I'm thinking to myself, dude, you should be thanking him.

[00:38:34] Like he was a catalyst for getting a lot of, you know, getting some things done.

[00:38:38] He saw the things that needed to go and but I like that he kept quiet.

[00:38:45] He kept the focus off himself giving Ford that little bit of credit.

[00:38:51] Yeah.

[00:38:52] You know and taking the attention off himself.

[00:38:57] Which some people can't do that.

[00:39:00] They want all the credit.

[00:39:01] They want all the attention.

[00:39:02] But I think voice is not that person.

[00:39:06] He's just not he is you know, he's in a very difficult situation.

[00:39:12] One that I don't think he ever planned to be in the first place.

[00:39:17] And he has, I think he's realized this is where I am and I'm going to have to step up and do this

[00:39:24] and get through this because he even talks about he needs to see Hitler because he wants

[00:39:28] to shoot him and end the war.

[00:39:32] So it's something that he has with Tibet they keep talking about back and forth.

[00:39:38] So we got to get to it.

[00:39:43] Yeah.

[00:39:43] But yeah, first time I had seen this movie and I don't know why I just held off on it

[00:39:47] for so long and yeah, I'm glad I watched it because it was great.

[00:39:52] Such a good one.

[00:39:53] I really enjoyed it.

[00:39:54] Yeah.

[00:39:55] I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I was going to.

[00:39:58] Because when it started I was just kind of like oh no this is going to be a

[00:40:01] I'm not a big fan of war movies.

[00:40:04] But this one won me over.

[00:40:08] Have you watched 1917?

[00:40:10] I have not.

[00:40:12] It's I mean it's not one that I don't think we'll ever cover on here but I highly recommend it.

[00:40:18] I think you would really enjoy that one.

[00:40:20] Really?

[00:40:21] Okay, I'll put it on the list.

[00:40:24] Yeah.

[00:40:25] So I think that's all I've got on voice unless you've got any more.

[00:40:30] No, we've talked about everything that I had.

[00:40:35] Yeah, I think we're ready to talk about Ford.

[00:40:37] Yeah.

[00:40:38] And I've just got like little notes about most of the other characters and stuff like

[00:40:44] the Ford I've talked about a lot of it.

[00:40:46] I like his relationship even though it's a little rocky with Chase, the photographer.

[00:40:56] As you know this is a boysen Ford come up on Dawson and Chase and Tibbit and

[00:41:05] you know he's just of course the photographer made it with his stupid camera and one piece.

[00:41:09] I like that way he's like oh yeah, what can I see it?

[00:41:12] Yeah this is great and then just yeets it into the forest and he's like we're avoiding

[00:41:15] attention we're not doing that no.

[00:41:18] What does Chase do?

[00:41:20] He pulls out another camera because that's what a photographer does.

[00:41:26] It was interesting because no one knew Ford like he was brought in for this but he wasn't

[00:41:32] part of that group like none of the people knew who he knew.

[00:41:35] Yeah this is kind of this group that had was in training together and were kind of their own

[00:41:41] little squad and then yeah Corporal Ford was brought in and I was just a throwaway line but

[00:41:47] like the sergeant said as a explosives expert since the mission is rigging and blowing up the

[00:41:53] radio tower that's why he's here.

[00:41:56] Yeah I guess they mentioned briefly that he had been in Italy prior to this.

[00:42:03] We don't get any real backstory as far as does he have family at home?

[00:42:09] I mean there's really nothing that said but I really believe that he kept people alive

[00:42:17] because he kept pushing the mission the mission the mission

[00:42:22] and he's a good leader.

[00:42:25] Yeah I mean he really had to get Boyce under control because

[00:42:32] Boyce just wants to help people and Ford is like he sees things differently because

[00:42:37] he's seen action before.

[00:42:39] Yeah he knew what his role was and he's going to do that

[00:42:46] which again just leads to him being pretty rough.

[00:42:51] You know talk about the scene it's really when he's got Woffner tied up and he's just got this

[00:42:56] the brass knuckle knife and he's just like beating him with and questioning him.

[00:43:02] Yeah you just don't want to fuck with that guy but then it's too much for Boyce there

[00:43:06] but then I just like those little callbacks because as he says is like I'm gonna win this one

[00:43:10] like he's just so confident.

[00:43:12] So then when we get Ford versus Woffner round two it's a little bit more difficult for our

[00:43:18] core role at that instance because Woffner is a little more jacked up on the juice he's a little

[00:43:23] bit more immortal. Oh my god.

[00:43:25] Yeah he's a little little tougher but then getting that throwback of then

[00:43:30] as Ford is hanging up on that hook and Woffner

[00:43:34] leaning into his ear and I'm gonna win this one.

[00:43:37] Oh man. You know when he was standing there and he's gonna put him on the hook all I could think

[00:43:43] is is he gonna do it like dead by daylight?

[00:43:45] Oh yeah oh no I've got a note for you it's under the Woffner one but since you mentioned it is

[00:43:51] Captain Woffner doing a pretty mean impression of a dead by daylight killer for Ford.

[00:43:55] It's a very interactive performance.

[00:43:57] It is. I would have to agree with that. Do you know that I had a movie that came to mind

[00:44:04] when he did a particular thing near the end of this movie?

[00:44:08] Yeah when he's injecting himself with the serum so he could be buffed up and able to take on Woffner.

[00:44:15] It reminded me of that movie that you don't like very much called 30 Days of Night when

[00:44:20] Ebbon did that so he could take on Mar-Love-Lead-The-Empire.

[00:44:25] That's right. I thought it out.

[00:44:27] No. I knew it.

[00:44:32] Yeah because that's what Ford shoots himself up with this serum really I don't think he would

[00:44:37] have survived those wounds anyway.

[00:44:39] No because the way that he hooked him and how he was trying to get off of the hook

[00:44:44] it also reminded me of Texas Chainsaw Masker like because that's how

[00:44:49] leather face would hook people either through the back or the front like that I mean

[00:44:53] that's what they would do or he would do and

[00:44:58] yeah I didn't think he would survive but I also didn't think Jacob was going to make it with that

[00:45:04] whatever it was stuck in him.

[00:45:06] Yeah. Yeah so Ford shoots himself up becomes a living zombie thing whatever it had never been

[00:45:15] done before into Woffner but he's like well clearly works for him so you know let me put

[00:45:19] myself on equal ground with him and also not die from my wounds of this hook so here we go

[00:45:26] and yeah it's a great fight that whole sequence with Woffner is just is really cool.

[00:45:35] I love the final boss Woffner is insane. I loved it like I was like I could do a little less

[00:45:43] Ford pulling himself off the hook but that's just me and my body horror thing

[00:45:48] but no the whole sequence was honestly perfection it was just the whole battle was really cool.

[00:45:54] I like the teamwork that we got between Ford and Boyce where he looked at him he rolls out the

[00:46:02] tank and Boyce just shoots it like so it was amazing and Woffner had no idea until it was too late.

[00:46:10] Yeah great move there and then after that I mean I called it the second

[00:46:16] that like even you know Woffner we thought he was dead he does crawl back up and it takes a lot

[00:46:22] but like even at that point like I said it in my head immediately I was like Ford's not leaving

[00:46:26] here he's going down with this place and then yeah when boy like he gets up and locks the gate

[00:46:31] between him and Boyce and Boyce is like no open the door we got to go and I'm like

[00:46:35] no I absolutely knew from the second that Ford took the serum he's not leaving that church

[00:46:40] like no he sees what it does to a person and that again that mission oriented thing to him

[00:46:47] he knows like we can't let this get out to anywhere else anyone else even if it's just through me

[00:46:52] taking it somewhere because he's like I walk out of here like this I'm a danger to other people

[00:46:57] but also they're gonna see what how they could misuse it and do whatever right and then he's

[00:47:03] like you know our side doesn't need this either this is not right and so your orders Bryce

[00:47:09] Boyce I'm just trying to read quick yeah he orders Boyce to take down the tower

[00:47:14] he's just gonna hang behind he's got some fellow zombies he's got to hold off and blow up one last

[00:47:18] time you know he's he does and Boyce wants to save him because Boyce wants to fix and save people

[00:47:24] like he wants to fix situations he wants to save people and I am like yeah that's me I like to

[00:47:29] fix things if someone's got a problem I want to fix it and so I see that it endears me to him

[00:47:36] because I can see how much he cares about other people and wants to do the right thing and so in

[00:47:41] this case he has to do the right thing by letting Ford die I mean and he gets to see Ford start to

[00:47:51] transform like in his eyes in his face as the serum really starts to take over and Boyce had no

[00:48:01] choice he had to do it and Ford I mean you have to give him credit for realizing what needed to be done

[00:48:11] sacrificing himself for the greater good yep yeah um that's really all I had getting the smaller

[00:48:18] note sections for for other characters uh which then would lead to Chloe being the next one that

[00:48:25] I've got notes on she had such a sad story I mean her parents were taken away she doesn't really know

[00:48:35] I mean what she didn't know what they were doing although her aunt when she was coughing I knew that

[00:48:41] wasn't just the cold or pneumonia oh it's my aunt she's sick and I was like with what the zombie

[00:48:46] plague like even before I knew it was coming I was like holy shit she sounds rough um yeah it

[00:48:53] made me think of this movie wreck which we should totally cover it's a foreign film and uh it's really

[00:49:00] well done and it made me think of her like down the long hallway because there's a scene in that movie

[00:49:06] where they're in an apartment and there's a hallway and yeah so it just reminded me of that um

[00:49:15] I knew I knew too she's sick sick with something serious like she'd been she'd been to the tower

[00:49:21] so she'd been tinkered with you know the doctor the good doctor there was tinkering with her

[00:49:27] yeah um and we see later which the amazing meg foster who has been in so many movies played

[00:49:36] the part of the aunt um you would not know it based on the amount of makeup and prosthetics

[00:49:43] that were used um but the amazing meg foster played that role so I have to have to mention

[00:49:50] that because it was really you know cool that she was part of this movie um I loved paul's interactions

[00:49:58] with people like he just wouldn't give up on tibet he just kept trying to get him to be his friend

[00:50:07] yeah so I'll go ahead and we'll talk about tibet because it's like again he's one of the bonus

[00:50:11] ones so I've got a couple little noses tibet being scared by an eight-year-old boy with a

[00:50:21] just having it go from there to like it became like a repeat joke because you know up in the attic

[00:50:25] tibet turns around it oh god it jumps again I was like I love this so much is this going to be a thing

[00:50:30] yeah it kind of was yeah and then I was just like this kid just wants to play some baseball

[00:50:35] you know during a Nazi occupation with an American soldier whose harboring is definitely a defonance

[00:50:40] um and then but I was like why does this kid pick the doucheiest one on the team to gravitate

[00:50:44] to why why are you going to tibet um and then I love later on tibet sitting there and paul is

[00:50:51] sitting next to him just mirroring and mimicking his every movement crossing his arms in a bag but

[00:50:56] he's like he's just enamored with him for some reason he just picked him and he was like I want

[00:51:02] to be you and it's like why did you pick him not your asshole um and I do love though like the

[00:51:10] the captain waffner is like passed out there and chase you know sitting next to him and then he

[00:51:16] wakes up he startles awake underneath the the bag and it scares the crap out of chase and he jumps

[00:51:22] and tibet starts laughing and I was like I don't know if you have room to laugh because you

[00:51:26] literally jumped twice from the little shadow that's sitting next to you right now I don't know

[00:51:31] yeah I don't think that you can uh yeah you have nothing to laugh about not when you've been

[00:51:37] scared about something much less intense for heaven's sakes yeah but then that arc because

[00:51:43] then you see paul just keeps following him around following him around and he just kind of accepts

[00:51:47] it and he's like whatever the kid is gonna keep following me and then we get to the end of the

[00:51:53] movie where tibet got shot saving paul and he sees him and he he just that's that's my guy

[00:52:02] that's my kid I gotta go and he goes out and and saves him takes a bullet in the shoulder and I was

[00:52:07] like god I hope he survives which he was he's fine but it was this might be contender for side

[00:52:13] character for me which I didn't think I was gonna see coming or but at the beginning of this movie

[00:52:18] but tibet is arc of the movie supreme douchebag to the child's best friend and hero like I was

[00:52:29] did you drink any kool-aid or another beverage during watching this movie I don't know is there

[00:52:36] a tibet kool-aid out there maybe I don't know but from being like just like oh god he's like

[00:52:43] on the plane when you first see the character you're like oh he's the asshole and I can't

[00:52:47] he's gonna die of death and I'm gonna not care about it because this guy sucks to then being

[00:52:52] like when he gets shot after getting paul to safety me literally being worried and going

[00:52:56] no don't let him die oh man

[00:53:05] no we can't have tibet die we already lost chase in a terrible way uh-huh so no we can't have that

[00:53:14] but yeah but we've got we are talking about chloe but yeah just there's like well we're talking

[00:53:17] about paul and his relationship with tibet like that tibet arc I have to talk about but

[00:53:22] yeah Chloe they find out in the the woods she's kind of scavenging goods and food out in the forest

[00:53:28] whatever she can get she has a rabbit uh and so and they also see these creepy remains of some

[00:53:34] kind of animal which is just a tie-in to like I think it's a little hint at like oh that they

[00:53:38] started you know experimenting on animals and then graduated to people and this is just something

[00:53:43] that's left behind but she doesn't seem to be a fan of germans either so she gets volunteered

[00:53:48] against her will to to guide them through to the village into the church they need to go to

[00:53:53] they get into town which mrs lesnar the old lady that's kind of

[00:53:58] narcing on chloe to the nazi she's the real villain of this movie that old yep um

[00:54:05] but yeah I love how you know she gets separated from boys and then he gets back to his team

[00:54:10] and they're like can we trust her and then she shows up and it's like of course she spoke

[00:54:14] english the whole time and she was she was just sussing out the team in advance by hiding that

[00:54:19] information it was like that's brilliant and I like her a lot yeah she was great I liked her a lot

[00:54:26] I mean she was doing the best that she could to take care of her little brother and her aunt

[00:54:32] and deal with this situation I mean when she could be taken away at any time because

[00:54:38] waffner was holding things over her head and we'll talk about that when we get to him

[00:54:43] yeah so yeah I'm talking about how gung-ho she was to go after her brother obviously and

[00:54:50] getting there just taking that one soldier out and then the other soldier leads her

[00:54:54] to this cell which she really like fell for that bullshit I there's no paul in that cell

[00:55:01] it seems there was something else in there she's incredibly much scarier than paul not that paul

[00:55:07] is scary like in any way but this thing is very scary very scary because yeah holy

[00:55:14] shit that thing was terrifying this like I don't even call it like a person it was just

[00:55:19] but like I was really worried for Chloe for that like moment where he like it had her up

[00:55:24] against the wall but she slows it down with a few bullets to the brain yeah slows it down that

[00:55:30] does it uh and the fuck that bone knife of an arm just makes me think of something else and

[00:55:35] I don't like it um but viva la flame thrower that was the ticket well I mean that's what they had

[00:55:43] talked about is that the flame thrower is what took out I mean boys talked about it he said that

[00:55:50] he saw them do that yeah what she did was he watched the the nazis like torch all of these

[00:55:56] deformed humid and I was like so how did the ant get to go home what was special about her

[00:56:02] I don't know but I mean they may have been putting her out there to spread it but again

[00:56:08] there was no biting and spreading of things so that didn't seem to be a thing yeah no it was

[00:56:15] better to reanimate co-ops is but yeah yeah so that's really kind of Chloe uh not a lot of notes

[00:56:23] but I did really like her yeah me too I thought that she you know did her best to try to have

[00:56:31] a life create a life for her her brother and her aunt with the situation that was going on so so last

[00:56:38] big section is really waffner and then the nazis but if I can before that just have little notes

[00:56:43] about some of the other soldiers uh so Dawson we didn't see any but yeah like literally I was about

[00:56:50] to pause the movie and then take some notes and then he stepped on the mind so then my

[00:56:54] note just became well I was gonna talk about how much I love Jacob Anderson in this movie

[00:56:58] this southerner writing a book but then he stepped on a land mine and like that there's no Dawson so

[00:57:05] I guess he can just go back into my heart is Raleigh Richie the British singer that I also

[00:57:10] love very much because I guess that book isn't happening uh no but you could also watch him

[00:57:15] on interview with the vampire because I've heard he's very hard at that and I know I need to

[00:57:20] but you have a very long list of shows to watch and it's incredibly difficult to

[00:57:25] to find time for it yeah someday you might watch it yeah and then tibet I talked about so then lastly

[00:57:32] yet chase who again I'm not sure was he there just to be the photographer I mean I assume he's also like

[00:57:39] a trained soldier but like he wasn't really fond of being an integral part of the mission they're

[00:57:43] like okay chase and timet you guys go out and do this and then he's like do I have to it's

[00:57:48] like what did you think you're just gonna take pictures all night is that all you were planning

[00:57:51] on doing I think that was part of it I think that he was supposed to be the photojournalist

[00:57:58] the thing is though I kept thinking his camera was gonna come into play at some point and never

[00:58:02] did no um but then yeah last note on chase and really a last just bonus kind of character note

[00:58:10] I just want to read this one word for word because it's just a journey to go on to

[00:58:13] the RIP chase he fell for waffner's playing dead trick unfortunately oh well reverse that

[00:58:20] rest in you know unrest in chaos because boys shot him up with the nazi serum and he's back

[00:58:27] up and he's feeling better than ever super strength and aggression quickly accelerating

[00:58:32] deformities so Ford fires away to stop him so a double uno reverse back to RIP chase wait

[00:58:38] wait wait no he got back up he's immortal reverse the reverse reversal and oh boys with the head

[00:58:42] smashing RIP chase for the third time what a roller coaster well I I honestly commended boys

[00:58:50] for actually taking care of something he did because he's the one who gave him the serum

[00:58:58] yeah and he took care of it like he's the one who put him out yeah so it was a whole lot

[00:59:04] because chase got three RIPs in the same note so yeah that was it was very quick

[00:59:12] up down up down bye bye chase hello jet bait bye again but hello again bye again um yeah

[00:59:23] man I'm not I'm not dead

[00:59:27] uh oh man so I think this brings us to Waffner an evil son of a bitch

[00:59:38] him taking advantage of Chloe in just holding things over her head like taking her brother away

[00:59:46] or yeah almost I kind of maybe answering a question I just asked is like because I was like

[00:59:51] you know aunt looks pretty rough and it's like well why does she get to come back and it's like

[00:59:57] maybe it says a reminder it's like if you don't follow what I'm saying that's gonna be you that's

[01:00:02] gonna be Paul that's gonna be because he says you know with Paul he's like hey maybe we can help

[01:00:06] him out like we helped your aunt I was like I don't know whatever is going on with her didn't

[01:00:10] look to be very helpful um but but yeah he's just kind of holding that it's like we can

[01:00:16] we'll take your brother if you don't you know our agreement super gross agreement he's disgusting

[01:00:23] as are his men because I mean especially that other guy's like why don't you go out of your

[01:00:27] way to be a dick to a little kid and spit on his baseball how dare that was so gross

[01:00:32] that was so disgusting yeah but but Waffner played by um again hopefully not butcher it

[01:00:39] but uh pilo asbeck uh captain waffner there he is almost unrecognizable in this movie because he's not

[01:00:47] in hot topic pirate of westeros mode he is also the originator of the little bubbles of love

[01:00:59] saying in our friend group yes yes he uh he brought that up that's uh that's because we um

[01:01:07] I haven't met him but we have people in our podcast network who have yeah and yeah our good friend

[01:01:13] shelly champagne he there's a video of him talking with shelly and with her name champagne

[01:01:19] gave me like your champagne little bubbles of love and that became just a running joke forever

[01:01:23] and that was pilo then he's the one that came up with that he originated that so when I see him

[01:01:28] I just think of little bubbles of love yeah yeah there were no little bubbles of love in

[01:01:33] this he did not have any of those in this movie no no I have to tell you that the makeup part

[01:01:42] I had to go specifically to find out what they did with his face

[01:01:47] to create such a mess because I'm like what is that you know is it whatever um

[01:01:55] he spent five hours every day getting prosthetics applied

[01:02:00] five that's honestly yeah shorter than I would have thought that's pretty impressive actually

[01:02:05] yeah I wish to pull that off yeah there was an interview on polygon um and the director went

[01:02:12] on to say you can't put a green sock on someone's face and expect them to know what the hell they

[01:02:17] look like and then the actors also are acting opposite a guy with tracking marks on his face

[01:02:23] or a green sock but if you can make it real it's best because then they can react you know

[01:02:28] he's thinking about what they can react to

[01:02:33] there was also and since we're on the topic of this I might as well share it now

[01:02:37] when chase snaps his neck and he goes back and he's got all these bones protruding

[01:02:42] they did old school puppetry animatronics the only digital stuff was to clean up the shot

[01:02:50] yeah it wasn't anything that yeah I could imagine the the practical effects that went into that

[01:02:56] chase scene very reminiscent of uh the thing which we also still haven't covered we need to

[01:03:01] I know and you know who are supposed to cover that with yeah we just gotta

[01:03:05] gotta get that down get on with that oh he just got married so he's I know Derek

[01:03:11] busy busy man love you Derek so happy for you congratulations um by the time this comes out

[01:03:20] it'll have been like a month yeah still that's still great month still congratulations on you

[01:03:27] made it a month make it to 70,000 more yes please good job congrats yeah because I wanted to know

[01:03:36] specifically because his face was like a work of art like it was so distorted and broken and

[01:03:46] and I couldn't tell it first and then he shoots himself up with the serum and takes

[01:03:52] his hands away and it's just like all right what how much of this was pre serum and how much is

[01:03:58] post because I'm not sure I think it was all like pre like that was we saw Ford get a pretty good shot

[01:04:03] on him yeah and then he comes in and goes straight for the serum and so that I see like he was

[01:04:08] shot in the face was bleeding out like he knew he wasn't going to live a long time so his red

[01:04:15] skull looking ass just double dosed himself with some serum while still alive against doctors

[01:04:20] orders was yeah this turns out I don't he's such a beautiful man and yet he plays these characters

[01:04:29] that are so awful yeah but he he's yeah he's got really striking features

[01:04:36] you know the Nazis took over a church and then turned it into what is this a center for war

[01:04:42] crimes pretty much I think so yeah we see the transformation time is quick with

[01:04:50] whatever is going here with all this horrid fucked up shit going on down here uh yeah reanimating

[01:04:57] zombie soldiers uh but yeah really with him is just the final fight I've already read the rest

[01:05:03] of my notes I had for him was yeah just him dead by daylighting Ford and being final boss Waffner

[01:05:09] well I have that was all in my notes on Waffner I have a couple of other notes do you have

[01:05:17] any other notes I am noted out you're noted out okay so in the recap on Wikipedia it mentioned that

[01:05:27] the serum was made by using the villagers bodies to distill the power of the black tar

[01:05:33] which had been running under the village which I didn't I just wasn't sure they were in these

[01:05:38] bags and I was just like why are they in the bags it's just creepy and gross

[01:05:43] it's a very creepy creepy thing um Operation Overlord was the codename for the allied operation

[01:05:52] for the battle of Noamunde which is a real thing of course um and in an interview with Jimmy Fallon

[01:06:05] Wyatt Russell said he had mono while he was filming this oh wow lost about 25 pounds so he

[01:06:11] knew exactly what it felt like to have this yeah he did so the first sequence at the beginning we

[01:06:18] talked about how chaotic it was the seiza the soldiers are jumping out of the plane they rigged

[01:06:24] a plane on a gimbal blowing up the front tilting it as if they were falling through there and

[01:06:30] sending stompmen tumbling through the the through real fire basically yeah to make that happen

[01:06:35] just made me think of Society of the Snow and all the different things that they did with that

[01:06:40] when they were like simulating the crash and everything yeah that's that those are all the notes I have

[01:06:49] awesome we did it I know this was a good one it was a it was a fun one yeah I enjoyed it more

[01:06:57] than I thought I would I was supposed to go see it in the theaters and then I didn't end up going

[01:07:02] and I think it was because I heard bad reviews but after watching it it's like no this was good

[01:07:09] it was a little different I think than I was expecting but I liked it I thought it was it was

[01:07:14] decent yeah we covered it very very glad that I finally marked it off my list this podcast is

[01:07:21] super good for us finally getting these off my list that I just hadn't gotten around to so yeah

[01:07:27] that's what happens pake says oh I haven't seen that one yet and I find a way to put it on the

[01:07:32] list somewhere well you're gonna force you to watch it and really pay attention so that's good

[01:07:40] yeah this was great yeah oh and there goes the feedback phone so maybe we'll hear from

[01:07:49] Catherine and others yes what they thought of this one all right we do have a little bit of

[01:07:55] feedback this week uh first one is just kind of something we wanted to throw in as conversation

[01:08:01] from last week's episode continued a little bit tease that up a little bit let Daphne read that

[01:08:07] in a second then we got one for this week but yeah definitely go ahead and hit that first one

[01:08:10] so Alma sent in a response to Catherine's running with cats challenge and this is what she had to say

[01:08:19] Catherine I tried running with my cat and almost killed myself because I tripped over my flip flops

[01:08:25] meanwhile my cat was meowing hella loud thank goodness I did not record myself

[01:08:31] I would do the same thing Alma I can see myself getting tripped up over something you know tripping

[01:08:38] and falling and the cat flying from my arms you know just nuts nuts so I think I will leave the

[01:08:45] challenge to Catherine it seemed to work better for her than it would for me yeah I don't have a

[01:08:52] cat so it would be really hard for me to do as well uh all right but for this week

[01:08:59] Overlord uh we did hear from Catherine on that one too awesome where she says I'm not sure what

[01:09:04] I was expecting but it wasn't something that started like society the snow and ended and

[01:09:08] ended like resident evil I loved all the gore effects and the Nazi generals face was terrifying

[01:09:14] pretty sure I missed a few plot points in question where a flamethrower came from but

[01:09:17] it was still a pretty fun watch that is great I wish we could go back in time and use that as

[01:09:24] the synopsis somehow because I think society starting like society the snow and ending like

[01:09:31] resident evil is it such a great way to kind of yeah it sums it up pretty well yeah it's great

[01:11:42] drive each other and by each other I mainly mean Daphne completely insane and playing a lot of

[01:11:48] little fun games and a lot of times the the rules and mechanics of the games probably are just made

[01:11:54] to infuriate Daphne more but you know that's what we do and she sticks around for some reasons

[01:11:58] so yeah I haven't quite figured out why I don't know their their weeks when we're recording that
