[00:01:37] Welcome to the Star Wars TV cast holidays special broadcasting around the world, and across the galaxy.

[00:01:39] This is episode sixty-one.

[00:01:40] I'm Jonathan and I'm James.

[00:01:42] In this episode, we are our week of star wars Bijana Belles in the tornar world.

[00:01:43] Line up and the ending of this series Where comes the Tokyo season for traveling after

[00:01:44] the darkness?

[00:01:45] back best moments. Oh, and a little bit of an empire pub quiz.

[00:01:50] And please welcome back some of the podcastica All Stars. I'm Jason. I'm Penny. I'm Mark.

[00:01:57] And I'm Rima. Well, welcome everyone to the holiday special

[00:02:00] and what a rollercoaster of a year in Star Wars it's been. We've had Mando's season

[00:02:06] three which had some of the best and words moments of the series. I'm looking at you

[00:02:11] Jack Black and Lizzo bad batch hit our screens and it was surprisingly good.

[00:02:15] And we had a soca which is pretty good with live action clone wars and rebels and

[00:02:21] the return of Anakin Skywalker but it also ruined Star Wars as we know it

[00:02:26] with lightsabers being set to stun and becoming Jedi is as easy as running

[00:02:31] the deep fryer at McDonald's. And I know it was last year but I'm still upset

[00:02:35] over Kenobi. But after watching Empire for the hundredth time last night

[00:02:41] my love for Star Wars was reignited and the new hope for the franchise was lit once again.

[00:02:47] So welcome everybody grab yourself a hot toddy whatever your drink of choice is

[00:02:51] and join us for the Star Wars TV cast holiday special Empire Strikes Back

[00:02:56] Edition.

[00:02:57] Are we going to have like a dark cliffhanger just end it right in the middle?

[00:03:03] In the middle of question 17.

[00:03:08] No I thought that but then watching it again today and I kind of felt more

[00:03:13] positive when I watched it this time at the end. I guess it's because you know

[00:03:18] hands are live I suppose. Yeah as a kid I was like what the fuck?

[00:03:22] I felt severely ripped off when I walked out. What the hell is going on here?

[00:03:28] I also looked at it so I watched on Disney and I was late and I pulled it up to watch

[00:03:36] and it had a runtime of two hours and I'm like holy crap how much extra dinosaurs did he

[00:03:42] put in in this version? I swear it was only 90 minutes wasn't it originally or 100

[00:03:47] anyway it's still the best. It still is the best.

[00:03:52] So yeah.

[00:03:54] Well listen James just wanted to get your thoughts on the year in Star Wars before

[00:04:00] we launch how do you think it went?

[00:04:03] As you said it was a roller coaster it was ups and downs I have to say I know we didn't cover it but my

[00:04:09] favorite of my highlight was Bad Batch because I really really loved season two

[00:04:16] and I hope well I was gonna say I wanted to see like seven seasons of that but

[00:04:20] we found out we only have two more to go and they're gonna wrap it all up in

[00:04:24] 24 and stuff but I really I really liked it I thought it was because it was

[00:04:29] kind of consistent I mean like Mando was up and down Ahsoka was a bit up and down as well

[00:04:34] but like I liked Bad Batch I thought it was on an even keel and like the storyline was good

[00:04:40] and I love all those characters and I'm not going to too much people haven't seen it I know but

[00:04:46] the fact they bring in Saw Gerrera and I was like oh you've got a there must be some way we get a

[00:04:51] teaser get Tony Gilroy involved can we get live action Bad Batch in the background in Andornex

[00:04:56] yeah but anyway um but yeah I'm sure they'll be bringing in yeah I mean Ahsoka had some epic moments

[00:05:03] and some really cool bits but like you said it was kind of ruined by sort of the the bread knife

[00:05:07] sort of lightsabers that were being used of it and I was like yeah so but I mean I think it's

[00:05:12] a pretty good I mean yeah quite gone yelling at everyone from forth close to world my daughter

[00:05:18] said that exact same thing he was mad about that I mean I get stabbed once and I'm gone

[00:05:26] it's not fair I mean Darth Maul's back and yeah he lost like half his spine all his lower organs

[00:05:36] and he's cool he's all back brought some ointment on it so yeah it's Monty Python time and it's like

[00:05:42] he'll grow back just a flesh wound yeah there's the flesh wound exactly

[00:05:47] yeah exactly well what did he do he kind of used the dark force to gather

[00:06:01] spleen bits and pieces of metal to yeah his spleen to recreate some mechanical legs in some pits

[00:06:07] somewhere I think did he I think he was the backstory for Maul yeah no he kind of drew

[00:06:14] things with the power of the dark force for him to reconstruct you know spider legs but you know

[00:06:19] I'm glad he was glad it was bad reminds me of another evil villain that Rima sometimes talks about on

[00:06:25] Strange Indeed it's very Vecna yes yes yes yes all right well let's jump into it we're going to

[00:06:34] we've got a lot to get through today so James anything else before we move on no I mean I was

[00:06:40] I was just going to mention like what next year holds for us and what we think

[00:06:44] and what everyone's most exciting thing well we're going to do that at the end we're going to look

[00:06:48] forward to I didn't read my show sheet did I clear yeah before a change James for a change

[00:06:55] it's only one page long isn't it no is it yeah I usually send a bit of a novel but no feedback

[00:07:02] this week so we're here to drink and enjoy ourselves and chat the year at podcastica and

[00:07:08] talk a little star wars let's jump in our starship and it's head over to Hoth let's get into our

[00:07:12] favorite moments of the Empire Strikes Back punch it all right but before we do let's introduce

[00:07:24] our panel and hear what they've been up to over this year and any thoughts on the year in the

[00:07:28] galaxy far far away and first up we have Kristen who joined us for a soka and what a great

[00:07:35] addition she was but she has claimed a sickness an illness a headache so unfortunately she won't

[00:07:42] be joining us but if you listen Kristen you were amazed she was stabbed with a lightsaber

[00:07:47] she'll be fine yeah that's a bummer by the way it's awesome yeah so feel better and I and I

[00:07:58] hope you actually listen to this one because we loved having you on and you're a great addition

[00:08:03] this year it's really good fun and some of the most epic arguments were between James and Kristen

[00:08:09] which was hilarious and I said this on another podcast I had to use the dual of the fates twice

[00:08:15] at one point because they were discussing it was I love it anyway and next up is as you

[00:08:24] could hear them there Mark and how's your year been mate what you've been up to oh it's been

[00:08:29] fun uh with panels to pixels podcast we've been having fun with gen v uh we've been having fun

[00:08:35] with invincible season two and a whole bunch of other things we're looking forward to uh what if in

[00:08:42] the coming year oh great yeah that's back I heard that I really enjoyed that actually

[00:08:47] I said nice little surprise yeah it's probably a marvel highlight yeah yeah it is good yeah yeah

[00:08:55] it really was I love the first season I love the first yeah the style of it was really good

[00:09:00] wasn't it yeah all right and welcome to penny how is how has your year been what have you been hosting

[00:09:05] and uh what is a highlight or two it's been a really busy podcasting year I started off doing

[00:09:12] murder magnets with Jason and Jade and then uh we rolled in which is poker face cover poker

[00:09:19] face the show poker face oh okay oh great and then we rolled into yellow jackets which was a blast

[00:09:25] it's just that's been amazing it's such a fun show to talk about and uh it's the first podcast I ever

[00:09:32] did so I have a lot of attachment to it and then uh Kara and I launched a new podcast called

[00:09:39] still slaying a Buffy verse podcast and we are oh fantastic visiting Buffy the vampire slayer

[00:09:46] we started with uh season two we just skipped season one and we just wrapped season two and

[00:09:53] we are about to start into season three and it's been a blast that's a that's a be that's a lot of

[00:10:00] TV to cover but it's such a classic isn't it yeah it is it's a little daunting when I look at

[00:10:05] down the road I'm like oh because we're also gonna do angel so yeah wow oh wow wow yeah that's

[00:10:13] like 12 is it like 3000 episodes that you've got they're just picking their favorites though so that's

[00:10:18] okay yeah that didn't work out too well because we couldn't eliminate anything in season three so

[00:10:27] I think I think that policy may have been a season one and season two only policy because

[00:10:32] it's really hard to eliminate any of them at this point the writing gets so good it

[00:10:37] it's very clear like halfway through season two the writing just like ramps up and then it's just

[00:10:44] excellent going forward yeah back when shows were allowed to find the footing well yeah you'll have

[00:10:50] like 24 episodes to do whatever you have to and honestly I love the podcast and I love what Penny and

[00:10:58] Kara hostess Kara thanks Mark has guested uh once and is going to be coming back again

[00:11:05] on the classic episode homecoming so if you want to check that out tune in to that yeah I'm sure

[00:11:13] there's a load of crossover yeah and next up you can hear me in the background our fearless leader

[00:11:20] Jason feel free to listen all 75 podcasts you've been hosting and what other thoughts you have on

[00:11:26] the styles I'm going to go take a bathroom break while you list these I'll be back in 20 minutes

[00:11:32] it's important well you did you did how many you did 15 in 12 days recently I heard you were

[00:11:37] broken after that I know well most of those were because we started our walking dead rewatch

[00:11:45] it's uh my whole podcasting started with walking dead back in 2010 and then this network

[00:11:50] kind of came out of that and now we've gone back and started over and because of Lucy's

[00:11:55] weird schedule we did like four of them in a week but um yeah anyway it's been really

[00:11:59] really fun to go back with perspective and we're you know completely spoilery on it so we talk about

[00:12:06] how things play out going forward and all that so that's been really really fun and then we'll

[00:12:10] interrupt that with coverage of the spin-off so we did the Daryl spin-off which I really liked

[00:12:15] and I have somebody else cover the Negan one because I hate Negan and so I thought I

[00:12:19] want to subject the listeners to that which uh so Ben got on there and did that

[00:12:24] you hate him personally? we started off uh I don't know him personally

[00:12:29] but mostly it's the character I like JDM the actor he's great he's charming I mean actually um

[00:12:36] yeah it's complicated I mean there's a lot of great things about that character but

[00:12:39] anyway you can I've ranted about it so much I'm tired of

[00:12:42] okay yeah I'm gonna listen to it yeah yeah see my published works yeah

[00:12:47] yeah exactly but the last of us was early on this year we're covering that was so fantastic

[00:12:54] yeah um Rimo's on there with me and Lucene Ben not much is coming out right now that I'm into

[00:13:01] partly because of the writer's strike so I decided to go back and cover some shows that I really

[00:13:06] liked over the last couple years that I didn't get a chance to cover when they were on so I

[00:13:09] covered The White Lotus with my wife Jenny and our friend Randy on our Welcome to the White

[00:13:13] Lotus podcast I love that show now a few of us are doing Squid Game we're about halfway through the

[00:13:19] season and Jonathan came and joined in to cover the recent Squid Game based reality show Squid Game

[00:13:25] the challenge with us that was a blast which was great wasn't it yeah they got it surprisingly

[00:13:30] right and uh it was very engaging and really bingeable and I've been re-watching Squid

[00:13:36] Games as well and that's been fantastic it has I forgot I knew I liked the show but I forgot

[00:13:42] what was so great about it and so it's been great David's on the way I just remember

[00:13:46] the game part and but there's so much more to it especially in the early early episode so

[00:13:54] it's brutal but it's good just watched it last week for the first time and it took me two days

[00:14:00] to get through the whole thing I couldn't stop watching yeah yeah so that's yeah that's been

[00:14:07] great we can't wait for season two and for season three of White Lotus and then aside from that I'll

[00:14:12] list them off just because James asked Yellowjackets Handmaid's Tale Pokerface and my favorite

[00:14:18] Cobra Kai along with my Patreon exclusive podcast The Zedhead Show this month we're

[00:14:23] doing a best of 2023 with games movies and tv shows so that'll be fun

[00:14:29] impressive busy year and an even busier one next year I think

[00:14:34] and finally some say she has created the longest podcast ever managed to make the great British

[00:14:41] bake-off feel like squid games and is one of my all-time favorite podcast-icker hosts joining

[00:14:47] this year from Stranger D is legendary Rima Joe welcome Rima

[00:14:53] hi oh my gosh that was so lovely thank you I don't think I need to say anything I can't follow

[00:14:59] that well what about your star wars situation have you been watching the shows this year

[00:15:07] you know I'm I am admittedly behind um you know I stay pretty busy and have a lot of other

[00:15:13] things on my plate but uh they're definitely on my list I did get a chance to watch Ahsoka

[00:15:19] and get caught up on that uh and I'm behind though on Mando and I have not seen bad batch so

[00:15:26] I'm a little out of my element with some of this admittedly but I did do homework I mean I did go

[00:15:32] back and watch like the essential episodes of Rebels to um to be able to watch Ahsoka because

[00:15:38] I was like I feel like I'm not going to know anything going in right I feel like I need to

[00:15:42] do some homework so I did some homework there and then watched Ahsoka and felt and felt really

[00:15:48] proud for doing that because then I understood who the characters were and what was going on and

[00:15:54] and then of course Empire I mean I've watched that a hundred times since I was a kid so

[00:15:58] that was a no-brainer but well welcome it's just great to have you on it I don't think we're

[00:16:03] we're podcasted together before have we so this is after all these years so it's the

[00:16:09] realm and I remember I remember you coming on as a guest years and years ago I remember and uh because

[00:16:15] of you I was disappointed the person couldn't come on and then you came on and I thought you were

[00:16:20] brilliant and we aligned to now on our criticism of that particular show I think was a Game of

[00:16:25] Thrones one many many years ago so it's great oh yes okay you had criticism of Game of Thrones

[00:16:31] episodes yes well I would make a way as an audience member I know you all do this too you

[00:16:38] they're yelling at your phone and you know disagreeing and agreeing with the house and yeah

[00:16:43] well it's people with that don't have house of the dragon don't have geeky friends that are our

[00:16:48] podcasters bread and butter yeah exactly because I gotta have somebody to that's where yeah that's

[00:16:55] where I got started I was like I don't have enough people in my life to talk about this stuff

[00:16:59] with and so that's how I followed into listening these podcasts and making all of these

[00:17:05] yeah Jonathan I used to rant on the phone yeah and then you just ranted on the microphone um it should

[00:17:11] be said that yeah Rema covers house of the dragon on dragon cast yeah and I just talked over her but

[00:17:18] she invited Jonathan on there so I'm oh good oh I'd love to come on yeah I can't wait for that

[00:17:23] that was that was a real surprise especially after the bad taste of the you know the last

[00:17:29] seasons of Game of Thrones that came out and it was just so good and there were moments in that

[00:17:35] that were heartbreaking and exciting and super interesting and um and it deserved the deserved

[00:17:42] the like the long podcast which I loved and uh because it was so detailed and and it was such a

[00:17:47] great surprise because I thought that that franchise was done basically I didn't think

[00:17:51] they could recapture anything yeah I'm thrilled for season two so uh I know that I did go

[00:17:58] ahead I don't usually watch trailers but I did watch that one because I've just

[00:18:01] feel like I've been waiting so long since uh the first season and I know we've got summer

[00:18:06] next year to wait but I'm definitely thrilled and would love to get your thoughts I would love to

[00:18:11] come on that's that great thank you well thank you everyone for joining us and at the end of

[00:18:16] the year so uh let's um take a break and be right back with our thoughts on empire

[00:18:31] well welcome back and what a movie this empire strikes back was released in 1980 created by

[00:18:38] George Lucas starring Mark Hamill Harrison Ford Carrie Fisher and of course Billy Dee Williams

[00:18:43] this movie defined the sequel and remains the sequel to which all others are compared

[00:18:49] there was a time when we had never heard the imperial march never seen an 8080 and never knew

[00:18:55] the one thing we needed in our lives was a little green Muppet named Yoda never knew the answer to

[00:19:00] I love you is I know and never dreamed that hearing I am your father could inspire such terror

[00:19:06] some of us dream that but yeah yeah

[00:19:09] we always have a little greenish friend

[00:19:12] exactly exactly Kermit and then Yoda

[00:19:18] exactly

[00:19:22] well for me it's cemented Star Wars is the greatest franchise ever one that continues to inspire

[00:19:27] me to this day do or do not there is no try and um well first I'd like to call my best mate

[00:19:35] daily podcast co-host James and what were you whether we're airing or not yes

[00:19:43] what was your favorite moment from empire well I thought oh this is this is an easy question

[00:19:48] I can answer this and then I thought it's not it's really hard to answer this and this is my

[00:19:53] favorite by far of all the films thank you Erwin Kirschner for making it better than George

[00:20:00] um and there's just so much in it I mean this but if you had to put a dl 44 to my head Jonathan

[00:20:08] I'm going to go for the morning scene on hoth like the the morning where they go looking for

[00:20:12] Han and Luke because when I oh yeah because I was like hold on I was eight when I saw this

[00:20:18] and if I'm right this is the first time we see low altitude fighters in Star Wars

[00:20:26] and when they're flying over just the point of view from inside the cockpit

[00:20:31] and you've got all of the interior all that you know and you're just looking over the

[00:20:34] shoulder of the rebel pilot and you're flying over the Norwegian I mean hoth um you know and

[00:20:41] and it just blew my mind because it's like you know flying around in space we had that in the

[00:20:45] desk so we had all that but now we're zipping around on real planets and like and god bless

[00:20:50] them with the stop motion and with the matte painting and everything they did back back

[00:20:54] in you know like the late 70s was incredible and it was just like it just sort of blew blew my mind

[00:21:01] then and then did anyone else have that feeling when they're going over the heels that you're

[00:21:06] that you're rising up and down I had a lot of this stuff for a wedge

[00:21:12] yeah yeah I think you can't see anything it's like where we go in so did you have

[00:21:18] I reckon you have wing mirrors though surely right so you could yeah just see see where he's

[00:21:23] going but you're right I think yes they come over the hill I think there's a clever camera move

[00:21:27] I think the camera inside the cockpit shifts a little to give you that that role as it comes over

[00:21:32] but it just yeah just for back in the day that was that was great because you know you've only

[00:21:37] sort of seen that in like World War two films of like you know sort of like planes go around and

[00:21:41] all the rest of it again um so yeah that would be my favorite but that film as a whole is amazing

[00:21:46] like you know I think it's the the cast it's their most gorgeous sort of moment like the coolest

[00:21:52] outfits and they all look great yes I think it's the one of all of the nine films where like

[00:21:58] it was Luke Hamill actually looks good it's like he goes from the annoying teenager in the first

[00:22:04] one and then he hits his mark here and then he looks slightly disheveled I don't know if that's

[00:22:08] Hollywood for you but I tell me gets to return this right yeah that was the accident from Corvette

[00:22:13] summer oh yeah of course yeah what was that what was that story uh yeah that might be a trivia

[00:22:22] thing I don't know sorry no it's not in there not include okay oh you don't know the the details

[00:22:28] but he had some accident he was in the car accident and he hurt his face and I thought

[00:22:33] that's why they did the whole Wampas thing Wampo yeah yeah just explain this cars

[00:22:40] face look different oh that's interesting yeah I feel really bad

[00:22:46] one because I didn't know the trivia in two because I just yeah sorry Mark Hamill if you're

[00:22:50] listening sorry James is a really nice guy but you mentioned it remind you of World War Two and

[00:22:56] I think watching it again this time more than ever before for some reason I felt like yeah I

[00:23:02] know George Lucas he likes history and I think he likes war movies and things and it really did

[00:23:07] war movie yeah Star Wars of course it's a war movie but yeah yeah I mean I went into definitely

[00:23:13] I went into the the depths of it mid you know it's kind of common knowledge that they use the

[00:23:17] Norwegian army sort of as extras in that and apparently I think in the foreground in the

[00:23:23] trench if you watch them they are so well drilled to the way they're holding the guns

[00:23:28] because they are Norwegian army but then I did a little bit more digging and they apparently

[00:23:32] they couldn't get enough people because it was so cold up there so they've like some of them there if

[00:23:37] you look at the Norwegian Red Cross Mountain Rescue and like they dressed them up and then

[00:23:41] they were still even short so they got some of the hotel from the crew where where the crew

[00:23:46] was staying so some of the waiters are actually like rebels in that as well they're all enlisted

[00:23:51] and there's there's one scene like where it's ridiculously cold and apparently the the

[00:23:58] crew the camera crew wouldn't come outside and the camera was too cold they basically shot with a

[00:24:02] long lens from inside of the lodge and just everyone's outside and they literally had the fire going

[00:24:09] and they just had the doors open and the lens through and they're like ready go drinking their

[00:24:14] high yeah so yeah they're drinking hot cocoa going yes again go again um but yeah it's

[00:24:21] it means incredible but like it was shocking apparently the conditions like that they had to

[00:24:28] deal with the temperatures and stuff so frostbite and everything yeah but it just it felt like

[00:24:33] almost all quite on the western front or something it had that sort of that proper sort of you

[00:24:38] know trenches feel to it so that shot where they all dropped their guns on the edge of

[00:24:44] the trench in unison was a beauty and uh but that was the interesting thing about I was

[00:24:49] thinking about this when I was watching last night and the difference between the soca because

[00:24:53] it was that scene where Bayland Skull and the republic guards that they brought out defend him

[00:25:00] just looked like interns you know actual soldiers they had like a disheveled or this unfitting

[00:25:09] republic uniforms on and barely put up a struggle or looked as if they could you know but

[00:25:14] I guess maybe that's movie budget versus I think so it's also I don't know I think it's

[00:25:19] I don't want to start on the the disnified Star Wars world but it's become a lot more

[00:25:25] childlike I think in level B you go back to sort of when this was made in 1980 and especially

[00:25:30] like as we talk about the whole tone of this film is like a lot darker and you know like

[00:25:35] tougher and stuff and so like and you got Irwin Kirschner who was was known for being

[00:25:39] you know that much more of a serious director than George and stuff and so I think that's

[00:25:44] where you've got that you know the drilled soldiers you know you've not good there aren't

[00:25:48] many scenes in this where you've just got stormtroopers just blindly shooting everywhere

[00:25:53] missing everything there's a bit on cloud six anyway anyway we're not here to go into the analysis

[00:26:00] for an hour so I'll shut up thank you and well Penny Penny you're up next what's your favorite

[00:26:05] scene from or part of the Empire Strikes Back it's impossible to choose as we all will say

[00:26:12] so I went with the one that I have the most nostalgia attached to and that's the at-at attack

[00:26:19] on the Hoth base yeah we had the Atari game version of that and it was by far our favorite

[00:26:28] game and we played it all the time it had this feature where every once in a while you would

[00:26:33] your little fighter plane would get the force and there'd be like a little goofy eight-bit song and

[00:26:41] some um light it would like flash or something and then you couldn't be hit and that was the

[00:26:46] time that you had to like act really daringly um so every time I see that scene it just brings

[00:26:53] back like our basement my brothers like root beer floats like it's it's it's a visceral kind of

[00:27:03] sense memory thing also I I lived in uh New Hampshire for many many years of my life and

[00:27:09] I've been in a lot of incredibly cold windy snowy blizzardy conditions and so I'm always happy when

[00:27:17] I see it on screen in a way that is realistic um yeah I that that one that one episode of Walking

[00:27:25] Dead where there's a winter storm and they're all like walking around with their coats on zipped

[00:27:29] I've never really recovered just better back in the day because it was all practical effects

[00:27:38] we didn't have like the CGI and green screens so just you know I know that sounds like everyone

[00:27:42] really kind of suffered during the whole thing of that but it turned out great on them they

[00:27:46] talked about doing a set with powders fake snow and they're like no we want to make it real so

[00:27:53] they went to Norway and did you hear they there was one scene that they wanted to get Harrison Ford

[00:27:59] out in the snow and there was a massive blizzard and so they they basically flew him out early

[00:28:04] to literally put him out in the blizzard on his own just to fill

[00:28:10] laugh it up fuzzball because they worked out you're right just because they were gonna do it

[00:28:15] they were gonna do it at Elstree at the studios afterwards and then like Eric Christian was like

[00:28:20] no no no there's this big storm coming in get him up here yeah get him out

[00:28:27] no wonder I think all the studio sets were at Pinewood right not Elstree

[00:28:36] uh possibly I think Pinewood right rings the bell but I think I may challenge you on that penny

[00:28:41] if I can get a screen brace yourself hold on oh no I'm just curing up Jewel of the Fates sorry

[00:28:54] this is fun I like being challenged James has disappeared listening this is a

[00:28:58] you know a live challenge on air which is you know great listening for everyone out there

[00:29:02] I feel very confident that that it was filmed at Pinewood I don't know if it was 100%

[00:29:08] filmed at Pinewood

[00:29:12] no it was Pinewood I'm on I'm on Penny's side on this I'm pretty sure it was

[00:29:16] I've actually been to Pinewood so no I've seen like and did you watch the uh Starwood oh you

[00:29:23] actually have been yeah now there you go excuse me oh sorry until the late 1980s Elstree studios

[00:29:33] six live stages all used by George Lucas for the original Starwood trilogy the largest

[00:29:37] stage six stage six six six thank you God was built specifically for the Empire Strikes Back

[00:29:46] the hot suit yeah for the Empire Strikes Back yeah roll the jewel of face congratulations James

[00:29:53] it's always uh yes it's always good to to uh argue with our with our new guests

[00:29:59] sorry Penny I am sorry Christian yeah so I'm sorry yeah I have a challenge from Penny I believe

[00:30:06] the challenge okay no I didn't say that I oh okay sorry I'm processing this information okay

[00:30:16] meet up you have to do an arm wrestling match you know oh that's a good idea yeah and Penny did you

[00:30:23] watch the series this year did you watch Ahsoka oh yeah I did watch Ahsoka I did not watch Bad Batch

[00:30:31] and I had not watched Rebels or Clone Wars so I relied very heavily on Yal the podcast

[00:30:39] to sort of fill in the backstory yeah James I was with you I felt like you were my avatar

[00:30:45] in the room I was yeah I I ran that whole BS thing of like oh I want to come in this is pure

[00:30:51] like the non book reader I was just lazy and I didn't didn't have time to watch like seven seasons

[00:30:56] of anime before us doing it I got two kids I was like I can't I'm got time I think it's good to have

[00:31:03] a balance of new and old I figured it works and it was yeah you know Jonathan loves to tell me stuff

[00:31:10] Star Wars it was good yeah classic podcast format isn't it book reader non book reader

[00:31:15] we went back to Game of Thrones and Sonic book reader so I'm planning for Andor season two I'm not

[00:31:21] going to watch it Jonathan is that right oh at all excellent watcher non-watcher yeah exactly

[00:31:29] so what happened there is a guy who does film reviews on I think YouTube

[00:31:37] for movies he hasn't seen and they're they're really really funny that's pretty cool

[00:31:42] that's hilarious all right Mark or what we all what's your favorite bit of the Empire Strikes Back

[00:31:48] well all right I have to side with Dante from Clark saying uh what's your favorite

[00:31:55] movie out of the trilogy it would be Empire uh but the thing is is that

[00:32:04] my favorite scene within the film is not something that everybody usually

[00:32:11] takes hold of uh how they navigate through the asteroid field and then they take hold inside an

[00:32:20] asteroid and then next thing you know they have to deal with the Minoc and then you have that

[00:32:26] whole little uh kissing and everything with Han and Leia within the millennium Falcon during that

[00:32:32] scene yeah and you know it's that sort of intimacy but then you see them come out of the

[00:32:37] ship they're dealing with the Minoc and then they have to get out and then we do see the creature

[00:32:42] that it this is not a cave and they come right out and that's the jaws I actually have uh when

[00:32:50] they re-released all three movies in the theaters in the 90s in the mid 90s meant to late 90s I

[00:32:58] should say my girlfriend at the time was going to uh uh to state the University of Albany

[00:33:06] in New York and there was a kiosk out there and they sold cells film cells people bought me that as

[00:33:15] well as the first appearance of Yoda uh and uh that is one of my my key favorite moments because

[00:33:21] it's the first time and the only time you ever see an animal like that in a Star Wars film

[00:33:27] so I always thought that was key and cool and uh it's kind of one that's overlooked all the

[00:33:33] time too because I think it takes us outside of the spectrum of of the empire out of the rebels

[00:33:42] or anybody that are out there oh even Tat tween or even Haas at that point because we all know

[00:33:51] that there's a lot of deleted scenes in Haas that we talked about the extra wampas and whatnot

[00:33:57] yeah that's right but uh yeah I just love that yeah there was a wampa

[00:34:01] raiding the raiding the base yeah there's a wampa attack that's in the deleted scenes if you actually

[00:34:07] got the whole ray set that's out there yeah but that asteroid scene was one of my favorites and uh

[00:34:13] and the music from it was incredible and and it's all just models right there's no CGI and the

[00:34:20] the the way the ships flew through the asteroids was incredible and and when when Han goes well I can

[00:34:28] still outmaneuver them and just shoves this lever forward and the millennium falcon just dives down

[00:34:33] it was one of the most incredible space battles I've ever seen yeah you know that was he escapes the

[00:34:40] big white whale as I call it because if you look at it it's very white he goes through the teeth

[00:34:46] like a ship yes like you know like during Moby Dick yeah exactly and it comes out snapping away

[00:34:53] from it and then and you just think it's like oh how are they getting gonna get out of that

[00:34:56] mouth as the as it starts to close and then they they're tiny against that space slug aren't they

[00:35:02] as far as uh everything that's going on within Star Wars over the past year I I loved everything

[00:35:07] you guys do with andor um I'm looking forward to the book of Boba Fett season two I'm hoping

[00:35:13] that it changed a bunch of things they're not like Boba Fett season two of that show

[00:35:19] I'm not sure if they're they're they're I think they're I thought I saw some trailer but

[00:35:25] oh maybe well because I'm like I keep seeing all these trailers like last night I saw like back to

[00:35:30] the future for uh with uh with what's his name from from with spider-man Tom Holland starring

[00:35:38] oh okay and I'm like oh this looks awesome man it's just somebody not go for a real look but I

[00:35:44] I did love though I really did love Ahsoka I was looking forward to it I said yeah I sent

[00:35:51] it feedback to you guys I really didn't yeah 100% thank you I loved seeing that I love seeing Rosario

[00:35:58] as that character even though a lot of fan feedback was like they didn't want her as Ahsoka but

[00:36:04] I see I found that really odd I thought she was great I thought she was perfect as well and

[00:36:10] I was able to actually say that to her like eight months ago and and oh really cool I saw her

[00:36:18] at uh Smart Castle cinemas real quick and it was like everybody was being fanboy and I was like oh my

[00:36:24] god I have a holy moment I said that it was it was the funniest thing but she lives in New Jersey

[00:36:31] so I was pretty close so she was able to go to uh Kevin Smith's uh uh theater but I was happy

[00:36:38] about it I loved the show I live in upstate New York but I'm like about an hour and a half

[00:36:44] two hours away from where it is in New Jersey because I'm in New Jersey so James is the Jersey

[00:36:51] boy James look about his dress later on on the podcast challenge me about studio stages

[00:36:59] James look it up and come to your school to Jersey you work but I had a great time with

[00:37:05] I had a really great time when it came to Ahsoka and I really enjoyed the show and the story

[00:37:11] um and now mind you I had an issue with the table in the middle of the spaceship that came up

[00:37:17] and down that's where they eat but they also stood and dirtied their feet on top of it

[00:37:24] and uh you know and I have to have a vacuum robot maybe they have a rumba hanging around yeah

[00:37:35] cleaning droid that's what those mousetroids and I loved how Kristen was talking about you know

[00:37:44] some of these buttocks but uh yeah

[00:37:49] oh Hera's heros but was one of the main stars of the of the show I thought yeah they kept doing

[00:37:56] these weird close-ups and I have seen some compilation videos on youtube as well which

[00:38:01] are quite fun yeah I loved Mary Elizabeth Winstead I love the fact that her and you're doing

[00:38:07] are both part of the star's universe and I thought she was great I really did not you know I I kind

[00:38:15] of like set it aside it's like okay they put makeup on our and everything I just I love the

[00:38:20] character but you know I I'm like well yeah she's kind of nice but okay and I just left it at that

[00:38:28] and did you were you a rebels found did you watch rebels I watched rebels but you know I'm

[00:38:33] I'm siding with James because I am I'm terrible with memory and then we'll talk to you about that

[00:38:40] when we talk about Monarch I've watched ahead even though we have screeners but I I forget

[00:38:48] very quickly but in the long run I'll remember later on but I did I watched rebels a long time

[00:38:55] ago there were certain things I did remember the same thing with the Clone Wars and I did enjoy

[00:39:00] those shows there were certain things I didn't remember but I felt like like James at times

[00:39:05] and that's why I actually listen to you guys because I need clarification

[00:39:10] and that's good that's where I'm in hand yeah that's why you Jonathan and and Kristen came

[00:39:14] in and Christian helped out yeah yeah Kristen was our rebel expert oh yeah she was one of her

[00:39:21] favorite show so and and the best thing is we can actually criticize the sequels now but she's

[00:39:27] not here it's one of the few sequel fans I know careful Jason still there Jason oh no Jason does

[00:39:35] Jason is not a sequel fan as far as I'd be the worst critic but I know they might be listening so

[00:39:40] I'll refrain yeah that's hilarious all right thank you Mark and Reena what were your thoughts on

[00:39:50] Empire Strikes Back I had so many thoughts Empire is definitely one of my favorites it's probably a

[00:39:57] toss up between Empire and Return of the Jedi but golly it was just amazing going back and watching

[00:40:04] it again it's probably been a year or so since I've watched Empire went back and watched them

[00:40:10] so I mean I have like overall thoughts of it as like you know how it stands in the

[00:40:14] in the franchise and in you know all the all the movies but if we're talking just favorite scenes

[00:40:23] I had a couple listed and a couple have already been talked about so I'll I'll talk about

[00:40:28] my favorite scene whenever I was little yes and that was the scene with Yoda whacking R2 with a

[00:40:35] stick because it would always make me laugh and now that I'm older still makes you laugh

[00:40:41] I've learned that it's still the best because Yoda whacking R2 still makes me laugh see there is some

[00:40:48] goofiness in the movie James just a little bit there oh no there is there is

[00:40:55] yeah

[00:41:07] yeah I was watching it last night and I stopped that scene because I'm thinking like like R2 is

[00:41:14] just like I'm looking to let some other little side character come and take over my part as the

[00:41:20] number two yeah exactly I mean who the hell is this have you not seen Star Wars yet I love that too

[00:41:28] all that stuff I love it that scene was so great and like I always fascinated by his box of food

[00:41:37] you know the weird things that were in there and just bent over box of dried up yeah and there

[00:41:42] was and I would look last night looked like there was a you know a whole lot of tic-tacs in

[00:41:46] there and some skittles and then just sort of like some pieces of dry bread it yeah exactly

[00:41:55] but yeah that was a classic scene and what about overall what were your thoughts on Empire

[00:42:01] oh gosh I mean oh I just don't think I could rank them really it's just so not fair but

[00:42:11] Empire's probably definitely my top three I've never really thought about ranking because I just

[00:42:17] I love them all I really do the sequels the prequels give me all of them you know yeah some

[00:42:23] are better than others but I think for Empire what really made an impact to me is it showed sequels

[00:42:31] could be bigger and deeper and darker because I mean the original I mean I know it's technically

[00:42:39] called the new hope but to me it was Star Wars that's how we grew up and how we know it but you

[00:42:43] know it was bigger than than than that one I thought wow a lot of sequels don't don't get there and they

[00:42:49] took everything from the original they fleshed it out they added more things to it there was a

[00:42:54] lot more iconic music they took the plot and moved it in a more interesting direction for all of

[00:43:00] the characters our characters became more multi-dimensional more believable they introduced

[00:43:06] us to more new worlds we had Hoth Dagobah Bespin we got Yoda Landos and new characters that were

[00:43:13] real great there was darkness there was real pain and emotion uh in this film and it showed like

[00:43:21] yeah the good guys don't always win because it kind of ended a little bit of on a downside right I mean

[00:43:27] look what happened with Han and everything so it kind of showed that oh you know there's some

[00:43:32] loss here we're not always gonna win started to and of course it had kind of lost too yeah yeah

[00:43:38] which got overrun yeah yeah and and even though it kind of had like oh our our good guys are not

[00:43:45] winning all the battles and all the time it still kind of felt like there was hope yeah

[00:43:50] still still kind of give you that hope and if and I mean like the biggest thing is it has like

[00:43:56] the biggest and most parod of plot twist in cinematic history that no one saw coming and

[00:44:03] then think about having to watch that and wait three years for that the little green guys Yoda

[00:44:09] and Vader's Luke's father I was like we need to find that kid and kick his ass because

[00:44:16] I still know it

[00:44:20] it must still piss you off as well it does I saw that in the theater with my father and his work

[00:44:28] partner uh my father was a police officer but yeah we we went as a family and I I love that scene

[00:44:34] a lot of people hate the fact that it's like everybody kept saying it's like oh Darth Vader

[00:44:39] Luke's father what it's like when you see it it's still impact it was I remember sitting there

[00:44:47] I think I was 13 and just having my mind blown because there were no spoiled non-spoiled for me

[00:44:54] it was so unexpected and I just sitting there going that twist twisted me up no end because

[00:45:00] it just before he gets his arm his hand chopped off and like Luke Skywalker was always my favorite

[00:45:06] even though you know I wanted to be best friends with Han I always wanted to be to be Luke but he's

[00:45:12] he gets his hand chopped off he's tempted by the dark side he's left his training and then he finds

[00:45:17] out that the most evil man in the galaxy is his father and it's just like and I think Luke did

[00:45:24] one of the best no in all of the cinematic history yeah well give that man a hand oh wait

[00:45:30] sorry oh yeah they do two scenes later that's true and what I loved about that scene is when

[00:45:39] they're tapping him to see if it hurts and you see the little movements of the machine in the wrist

[00:45:45] I thought that was a really yeah that was awesome really cool good effects all right who do we have

[00:45:51] next uh Jason so thoughts on it yeah this answer changes for me a lot but it's always something

[00:45:59] with Luke because Luke's my favorite and I love everything with Dagobah the environment

[00:46:06] the interplay between Luke and Yoda I think maybe especially the dark side cave I really loved

[00:46:12] and I going into my rewatch today I thought that's what I was gonna focus on and I was gonna

[00:46:17] talk about that but it was weird because the moment that hit me is this most cliched moment

[00:46:24] that you guys are talking about and I we've thought about that so much that revelation that it doesn't

[00:46:33] it doesn't quite pack the same punch anymore but for some reason today I felt like that 13 year old

[00:46:38] well let's see it was 1980 so I was nine that nine-year-old watching it all over again and I mean

[00:46:45] I knew I never knew my own father I only met him once when I was in my 40s he was kind of a

[00:46:51] deadbeat dad I sometimes I've realized lately resonated with characters with missing missing

[00:46:56] fathers like Daniel LaRusso and Cobra Kai and Luke Skowarker and so watching this today I was just

[00:47:03] like dude you have this guy who I really felt like where Luke was that he's the personification

[00:47:09] of evil he's the leader of this organization I've dedicated my whole life to fighting against

[00:47:14] he's killed many people I was close to I saw him kill my mentor I I told he killed my father

[00:47:22] he just fucking chopped off my hand and now he's towering over me this all in all his black imposing

[00:47:28] darkness and he goes I am your father and it was like that you know if you heard that yeah you

[00:47:35] just be like whoa that sucks like yeah that that's like what does that say about me that's worse

[00:47:42] than having a dead father but that's way worse exactly it's just so dark right at least he did not

[00:47:49] tell him he's just kissed his sister at that point as well yeah and guess what but um do you like

[00:47:56] okay really it resonates with all of Luke's story because it's like the whole scene in the

[00:48:04] cave in Dagobah is about him right confronting his inner self yes and you and it really makes

[00:48:09] sense when you find a vader's father because he's confronting Vader but he's also confronting that

[00:48:14] potential for darkness in himself that comes from his lineage and so yeah and so after that it's like

[00:48:22] Luke needs to become his own man he doesn't have not I mean he thought he didn't have a father

[00:48:27] but he doesn't it's bad so he really needs to become his own boy and then and not only

[00:48:32] not only does he do that and and he's maybe tempted by the dark side I think they could

[00:48:35] have done a little bit more with that actually they do in the comics like bring over to the

[00:48:38] dark side sometime but anyway and then not only does he just stand up for himself and become his own

[00:48:44] solid man but he actually brings his father back into the light too so so I think it just it's such a

[00:48:50] great character development of Luke Skywalker throughout this trilogy and that moment is so dark

[00:48:58] it really was in the anguish in his face and I took a screenshot while I was watching it because

[00:49:03] one of the great things of the updated Facebook is we have all these chats now on on so we've got

[00:49:10] the Star Wars chat we've got the the yellow jackets chat there's all of these individual chats and I'm

[00:49:14] just as I'm watching I'm chatting with actually Chris LeBeau and he's like I've inspired him to

[00:49:20] watch it now and he said we're saying how dark and how much pain there is in in in empire

[00:49:27] and so I just screenshot when Luke found out that you know he's in the middle of his nose screen and

[00:49:33] you know it's Mark Hamill and the the expression of heartbreak on his face is just so good and

[00:49:40] it was so meaningful and and watching it again I was the same I found that scene really moving

[00:49:48] and dark and shocking still after all these years and seeing it as we said a hundred times

[00:49:54] it still hits home every time and I was surprised last night how much I enjoyed watching it again

[00:50:00] so I hope you've all you know if you're listening I hope you've had another look if not yeah I mean

[00:50:05] if I mean I'm like I'm probably gonna watch Return of Jailor tomorrow now after doing it again

[00:50:13] yeah gotta keep keep it moving on yeah but is it a Christmas movie because you have the opening

[00:50:18] scene in the snow oh why not watch a caravan of courage yeah that's true solo probably

[00:50:32] but yeah no Jason that was a an incredible incredible scene and look and I know you

[00:50:38] you did Kenobi and you know I was on there with you and you've done all the Mandalorian

[00:50:44] and how did you what did you think of Ahsoka this season I really enjoyed it I did watch Rebels

[00:50:50] it's been a while I watched it you know over a year ago so it's kind of faded from memory but seeing

[00:50:56] Ezra I even though it's been a while like oh wow they just nailed that character so yeah they

[00:51:01] really did yeah and I'm trying to think I mean I feel like the other thing I loved was young

[00:51:09] Ahsoka when they yeah I thought she was like live action clone wars that was really great and that was

[00:51:17] in the movie yeah I hope she gets this bit on like I felt like same thing with Ahsoka as Obi-Wan

[00:51:24] Kenobi and even Boba Fett although not as much there's some really good scenes but it's uneven

[00:51:31] I think overall Ahsoka is better than Kenobi or Boba Fett but still yeah same kind of thing

[00:51:37] you know speed bumps here and there and yeah yeah and I think that their biggest problem is their

[00:51:43] need for content and a continual output of content so they can keep that subscription

[00:51:51] going because I think it really kind of everything feels a bit diluted you know

[00:51:56] they could uh Kenobi could have been four episodes you know there's things that they just hold

[00:52:01] shots for far too long when nothing's happening it all could have been tightened up and then

[00:52:07] with Mando there was a cancelled series that they kind of had to

[00:52:14] to uh to the Rangers of the Republic yeah Rangers that they had to try to fold in to use some of

[00:52:19] that story so I honestly I think too that I think Dave Filoni seems like a great guy he has this

[00:52:26] amazing knowledge about Star Wars and he has great storytelling ability sometimes but

[00:52:33] it also he doesn't hit quite as like with Favreau when he was more in charge of Mando seasons one

[00:52:40] and two he just knows how to make cool scenarios right for season three yeah even though yeah Iron

[00:52:46] Man was great season three of Mando I still liked a lot but uneven had some great moments

[00:52:51] but I felt like Dave Filoni probably had more of a say in that because he always

[00:52:56] has this whole tapestry of storytelling and it's it's interesting but it I don't know it

[00:53:01] just doesn't grab you quite as much and right kind of boring at times yeah and I and I feel like we're

[00:53:07] kind it's retreading old stories you know and I know he wants to finish off the Clone Wars but

[00:53:14] it kind of was finished off and I was really looking for like you know the ending of the

[00:53:19] Mandalorian season two was one of my favorite all-time moments of of television and my Luke

[00:53:27] Skywalker and this is how I got on and I've said it before is how I got onto into the podcast

[00:53:31] like a family as I sent in a voicemail on the on the Luke Skywalker arrival spoiler sorry

[00:53:40] and uh and from there everything I just started coming on but that was such a great moment

[00:53:45] in Star Wars that I thought that they'd realized where they'd gone off track and brought it

[00:53:52] back to some more traditional Star Wars and from there on we would be on the right track but it's

[00:53:59] been hit and miss for me but you know I still love Star Wars and it's it's still you know my favorite

[00:54:04] thing there is. There's enough good stuff there that I'm still a fan and I'm watching the new

[00:54:10] shows and and andor was just fantastic and I can't wait for season two so yeah yeah me too.

[00:54:22] Before we move on to the pub quiz any more points on Empire Strikes Back? I did want to spend a little

[00:54:32] time on aesthetics. The sets are amazing and Cloud City, I love the hallways and corridors and the

[00:54:41] sort of labyrinth of it but the lightsaber duel between Luke and Darth Vader actually was in my

[00:54:49] like film studies textbooks when I was in film school. It's so iconic it's so beautiful that the

[00:54:56] way that they use red and blue as these opposing colors and there's tons of red backlighting

[00:55:03] while they're fighting and they're against a dark background but it's really well lit so you can

[00:55:07] still see what's happening but it's very dramatic with the the blues and reds and then the steam

[00:55:14] that gets introduced just makes everything glow it's really fantastic. Because Darth Vader's color

[00:55:22] is red and Luke's is blue they had after this they had good corporate relations with Pepsi and

[00:55:30] not so good with Coke. Coke was not happy about being the you know the villain.

[00:55:39] I love the the flesh Gordon symbolism within it too as well too for the different worlds that we get

[00:55:46] because Cloud City and everything else it kind of gave you that feel of Hawkman feel that Luke

[00:55:53] is kind of derived from flesh Gordon because originally that's what he originally wanted to do

[00:55:59] and he could obtain the rights for flesh Gordon so he created his own cinematic opera

[00:56:05] or so opera as it were and yeah I just love it because how flashy it is it's certain scenes

[00:56:12] everything is so bright because it's so with hot scenes it's so white and bright yeah and then you

[00:56:19] got the kind of more bright but duller tones with when it comes to Cloud City obviously space

[00:56:27] is dark but has its moments of like brightness with with certain ships and you got Dagobah

[00:56:34] who is it's very dirt oriented and very dark and gloomy so Dagobah is like I'm trying to think

[00:56:40] from flesh Gordon the the other Prince um oh yeah I know you talked about with it with

[00:56:46] that when he puts his hand in and gets bitten yeah yeah the god gets bitten by that thing yeah

[00:56:52] in the tree trunk god so many needs to redo I love that movie sound track is incredible

[00:56:59] I love Queen oh is that the one with Queen yeah I saw that in a theater my brother brought me on

[00:57:05] that was my Christmas gift that year it would just so well just to hear that in a in a cinema when

[00:57:11] oh yeah he'll save every one of us and who was the um the princess what was the princess

[00:57:19] Ming's daughter a laurier or something yeah Ming's daughter yeah that made a young Jonathan

[00:57:24] very uncomfortable in the scene

[00:57:46] Darth Vader at Luke's scenes not only were they so well staged and lit but it was just so thrilling

[00:57:52] to see those two characters meet face to face because we had to win three years if you watch

[00:57:56] Star Wars in the theater they didn't meet face to face in that and so I remember just seeing the

[00:58:01] trailer seeing them together I was like I'm gonna watch this oh yeah yeah exactly he's around the

[00:58:08] block and as a on Penning's point of that of the the blue and the red that's now become the

[00:58:15] standard movie poster for every movie ever yeah like one side's red or one side's blue now

[00:58:21] and I wonder if it all derived from from that scene

[00:58:24] I mean they are rough primary colors but we won't go into that yeah yeah that's true

[00:58:28] there's a lot of orange in the blue as well which are complementary colors

[00:58:30] it's in our politics too but we don't we won't yeah

[00:58:33] the poster originally it's Christmas come on it's Christmas did you streusen do the poster

[00:58:39] originally or is that rough McWary's or it's based off of rough McWary's

[00:58:42] I think it was it's based on rafid it's not raf didn't do any of the posters did he

[00:58:47] do all of the Spielberg II and yeah the same I think it's the same guy did the Raiders one right

[00:58:53] did he do Raiders and Goonies and all of them I think

[00:58:59] he did the first walking dead poster yeah yeah yeah he was very popular

[00:59:07] yeah yeah

[00:59:09] Drew Streusen did he do the walking dead one

[00:59:12] too many times did they get him to the first one yeah I think they didn't yeah yeah yeah

[00:59:17] yeah I remember because they were giving him out and oh rock Roger Castle okay at convention

[00:59:22] and I like was in line but then I was like oh I want to go get someone's autograph and they're

[00:59:27] like oh you can go get them at this booth anytime and I'm like okay okay so then I go over to

[00:59:32] the booth and they're like yeah $400

[00:59:39] well a Roger Castell actually did the umpire strikes back movie poster originally

[00:59:45] uh good yeah um and any other points penny for us I mean I could talk for days about empire but no

[00:59:53] thanks yeah I think we okay all right all right let's actually I had a couple of things I wanted to

[01:00:02] say again I always come back to the music in in star wars and you know there was as I said the

[01:00:10] opening there's a time where the imperial march didn't exist and and now everyone will just go

[01:00:16] around going down and like everyone in the world I assume knows that those few few notes

[01:00:22] but what was played in my wedding as our wedding party reception

[01:00:29] Jenny is a special woman

[01:00:34] and I think Rima was mentioning earlier about the use of the music in this film they were

[01:00:40] they were slathering it on the the the force theme used over and over and over again the

[01:00:47] the imperial march was used over and over and over again and I think that kind of

[01:00:52] is something that's missing from from new star wars is the John Williams soundtrack

[01:00:57] that that well it can never be a 10 because it doesn't have that that sound to it because we

[01:01:04] got the imperial march and we got Yoda's theme which was brand new and it's a beautiful piece

[01:01:08] of music and Hanon Leia's theme as well which was so the the music in in in empire was another

[01:01:17] John Williams triumph I thought and and it you know is so ubiquitous and such a classic

[01:01:24] I think this is him at his peak too because he did the music for all the nine movies and

[01:01:31] it was all good but this is really where it felt most powerful yeah yeah but some of the

[01:01:38] great there's some great music from the the the prequels as well the door the fade door the

[01:01:44] fades like a music video into its own you know that that's how they promoted it yeah it was

[01:01:50] picking and uh and yeah and Padme's theme that the the love theme between Anakin and Padme that

[01:01:57] was a beautiful piece of myself but anyway we're talking about the empire strikes back

[01:02:02] and we're going to take break and we'll be right back with the empire strikes back

[01:02:07] holiday special pub quiz

[01:02:19] but before we do we have a very special voicemail to play for you one of the great

[01:02:26] supporters of podcastica and the star wars tv cast it wouldn't be a podcast without a message from

[01:02:32] our favorite Steve brown hey jonathan and crew um i don't know if this is going to make it to you i

[01:02:39] don't know if you're still recording or if you're done or not with the empire strikes back

[01:02:54] return the jedi i remember specifically i remember returning the jedi setting outside the theater

[01:03:00] with my friends and being like literally in the very last row for return the jedi i don't have a

[01:03:06] clear memory of empire i'm sure we we saw it the opening day and that we sat outside and watched it

[01:03:13] and just how amazing empire was back then and how the the just the movie going experience

[01:03:20] in in the 80s in the 70s and the 80s was for us kids you know those of us who whether you were

[01:03:28] i don't know it doesn't matter how old you are if you were living in the 80s and you went to see

[01:03:33] movies it was so different than the movie going experience is today um and just amazing so i'm

[01:03:41] going to send this off to you and maybe you'll get it before you finish recording or not if

[01:03:44] not no big talk to you soon well thanks steve and yeah there's nothing like going to the cinema

[01:03:51] back in those days with those uncomfortable chairs and the sticky carpet but they're

[01:03:56] you're all packed in together and everyone was cheering and everyone was having a great time

[01:04:01] and it really felt like you're all watching it together um but i'm sure i'm not the only one

[01:11:37] wow the guy standing next to him became the admiral yeah exactly congratulations what an honor

[01:11:45] as much as body fall to the floor like oh okay hopefully one day that will be me oh no wait

[01:19:28] scores well the scores jason oh well actually the last three were were worth 10 points a penny

[01:19:34] is up to 25 not bad jason is 30 30 45 45 unfortunately first so it's all but all

[01:19:46] but done and then we have 20 and mark on 30 and we may get to score all right don't i get like

[01:19:54] half a point for my follow-up yes a reman it can have two and a half points for the follow-up quote

[01:20:04] the follow-up quote

[01:20:11] all right okay last question which tool does han request from chubaca to repair the falcons hyperdrive

[01:20:20] penny penny hydro spanner

[01:20:25] correct correct go down everybody that is great and in the for the second year in a row

[01:20:34] the the star wars tv cast pub quiz champion is jason

[01:20:44] what is the name of the bird that takes care of work as he was after he was attacked by the

[01:20:50] medical droid nope answer is 21 b

[01:20:56] 21 b oh my god okay i've got one i've got one oh it was the first character in star wars to say

[01:21:03] it's a trap laia admiral akbar that's right that's right yes in the whole way so oh yeah she

[01:21:10] is a trap yeah pania mark were tied at 30 and reman with two and a half points

[01:21:21] two and a half i'll take it thank you everybody that was great fun great fun

[01:21:28] there was a interesting another question i thought was quite interesting is is like the

[01:21:34] line of dialogue that was spoken on set during the filming to help keep secret

[01:21:39] the Darth Vader I'm your father was that Obi-Wan Kenobi is your father was with the line that

[01:21:47] they they read on set to keep it all and i can just imagine the actor was david krauss in the

[01:21:53] suit david krauss yeah and is saying Obi-Wan is your father and mark hamill going no

[01:22:00] and every cross being like why is he so upset

[01:22:06] oh cool that's excellent you killed it you killed

[01:22:14] my dad rave's to play superman

[01:22:21] well thank you everybody that was great fun and thank you for participating

[01:22:25] um jason congratulations once again um but uh let's have a break and we'll be right back with a

[01:22:33] preview of 2024

[01:22:45] all right let's start with jason and see what's in store for 2024 i know you did a catch up cast on

[01:22:51] white lotus and squid games but what else are you going to cover in 24 jason the the rick and

[01:22:58] michonne oh you are spin offs coming up the ones who live yeah i have a little worried about it

[01:23:06] oh really well i can you say it on the podcast james james shot the the post for that yeah i worked

[01:23:12] with them both on it and they were they're amazing i can't say all i'm gonna say is michonne's

[01:23:16] outfit is incredible it's like it's almost like they've taken a little bit of Wakanda and

[01:23:22] thrown it in there but in a good way that's all right yeah nice yeah i mean they were dressing

[01:23:28] her already pretty cool like mad max style almost um yeah still some costume they're both super sweet

[01:23:34] like i've done panels with them too and yeah they're really cool right really yeah really

[01:23:38] really nice and really they seem really into you know where their characters are going what

[01:23:44] it's going to be so i'm excited about it yeah oh yeah yeah yeah and you know really invested in

[01:23:49] very sort of passionate about it and like yeah so um yeah went that soon isn't it as well i think is

[01:23:54] that february i think february yeah it's coming up quick and uh i i i've been thinking about maybe

[01:24:03] podcasting about the fallout show that just had a trailer recently it looks pretty good it's by

[01:24:09] the same couple did um westworld which had its ups and downs but um it's got ellipernel who was on

[01:24:18] yellow jackets also michael emerson who was bent and lost so uh yeah it looks like they pumped a

[01:24:25] bunch of money and it's coming out oh really prime yeah i wasn't yeah throwing a stack at money

[01:24:30] that one um aside from that i mean i hope kobra kai comes back next year yeah and um

[01:24:36] um yeah they already said white lotus and last of us won't be out until 2025 so that's kind of a

[01:24:42] bummer but yeah i think it's because i know that um and or has been pushed as well so that's not

[01:24:49] going to be out this year now oh really that's going to be pushed back till 2025 that's weak so

[01:24:54] they already they were almost finished with that yeah then the strike happened and they lost six

[01:25:00] months basically so they were going to come out uh mid next year and and i think they just

[01:25:06] couldn't film anything and so they're in Russia schedules are shifting middle of filming yet

[01:25:11] which is fine yeah because the other things we have on the horizon i think is another season of

[01:25:18] bad batch the acolyte which should be interesting and see but i might listen yeah i might i'm curious

[01:25:27] to see what the what they'll do with it because it will come from a very different angle i think so is

[01:25:32] that is that the one that's based way way back is that the closest we are getting to i think it's

[01:25:37] high republic and yeah and it's from the sith point of view okay all right i might give it a

[01:25:43] world yeah this time yeah okay and um my other star wars was there the jude law one oh yeah

[01:25:52] skeleton code oh skeleton skeleton yeah that's it yeah all right penny what do you have coming up

[01:25:59] 2024 well we'll keep be putting out still slaying and covering buffy and uh we'll take breaks along

[01:26:06] the way to cover movies that relate to themes that are in buffy and uh we just did cruel

[01:26:12] intentions and the next movie uh we're planning is heathers you know just high school as hell

[01:26:22] yeah and uh hopefully extraordinary season two will be coming out sometime soon so greg and i can get

[01:26:28] back to that and uh i have wanted to do a coverage of ag the agatha harkness show whenever that comes

[01:26:37] out but i don't know whether that's we keep pushing that out yeah push this yeah i think that's

[01:26:43] getting yeah i've talked to lucy about covering it together but her schedule is sometimes hard

[01:26:48] so i guess we'll decide when we actually know when it's coming out and we'll like

[01:26:53] put together a podcast and yellow jackets could be out next year sometime i'm not gonna hold out

[01:26:59] hope for it and then if she helps shows up in it could anything like as a side character i think

[01:27:06] greg and i'll get back on she helped cast and talk about it well good because that was unfortunately

[01:27:11] not renewed yeah but you know the unrenew maybe they'll re renew who knows it's yeah she'll show up in

[01:27:18] movies she's definitely gonna be in yeah exactly yeah exactly hope so and i think we're with star wars

[01:27:26] is all all leading to a movie kind of avengers team up eventually so who knows what series will

[01:27:34] get and even if man lowering will be back for season full well i heard that yeah when

[01:27:38] lowering is going to be a movie right instead of a season four i think that was fake yeah

[01:27:44] i don't know for sure but what about you jonathan like you got another year for and or so are you

[01:27:50] just gonna go a whole year without podcasting well no i'm hoping to know i'm going to be hosting the

[01:27:57] dragon cast

[01:28:08] i'll be a happy guest like i really enjoyed jumping on the screen game the challenge i just woke up

[01:28:13] upsipping my coffee and there was a a shout out for for an extra host on the thing and so i'll

[01:28:19] jump on an hour and a half later well yesterday's talk i was on luckily i'd watched it the night before

[01:28:24] yeah um reymid did we get to you no we didn't do it so what have you got for 2024

[01:28:31] oh gosh well on strange indeed i mean everything's kind of up in the air you know our flagship show

[01:28:36] stranger things i have no idea when season five you know they're they're keeping that close to

[01:28:41] their chest you know that also got put on hold due to the strikes and there's been i haven't even

[01:28:48] heard any whispers but i i honestly don't think it'll be anytime this year it'll probably

[01:28:53] be 2025 um i'm hoping for the new season of view we covered season four um earlier this year so i'm

[01:29:01] hoping they'll get that finished i know that they had to halt for a little while production

[01:29:06] so again a lot of our stuff really got pushed so i'm honestly not there isn't really we kind of

[01:29:11] just fly by the seat of our pants if we don't have anything on our schedule so i am looking

[01:29:16] forward to though we talked about house of the dragon season two that'll be out we'll cover

[01:29:19] that on dragon cast and then hopefully cober kai we don't have an exact date yet but i'm hopeful

[01:29:26] because i think they made some pretty good progress and then had to stop for the strikes

[01:29:31] and they're usually pretty good about getting those out but i do know they also with this being the

[01:29:36] last season especially they're really worried about like the quality versus rushing it so

[01:29:43] i don't know we'll see so those are the things i i think they said with with the only caveat

[01:29:47] being that nothing else happens in the industry the hope is to get it out asap for fans who've been

[01:29:52] waiting so i would guess yeah you know towards the end of the year yeah so it'll be a interesting

[01:30:00] year next year mark did we could did we get to you with it no sorry no okay okay and mark um what

[01:30:07] do you have in store for 2024 uh well for panels the pixels podcast obviously i mentioned it

[01:30:14] earlier we're going to continue uh what if comes in towards the end of uh 2023 going into 2024

[01:30:22] it's kind of interesting so uh we're covering two episodes of what if per every podcast episode

[01:30:29] we're looking forward to just the season four boy the boys oh great yeah not excellent

[01:30:37] excellent can't wait for that uh and echo on disney plus as well yeah and then aquaman too is

[01:30:46] supposedly coming out so i don't know if me and destroying that verbally because that will be a

[01:30:52] great train wreck we actually did cover the marvels and honestly we both found it entertaining but

[01:30:59] it was it was pretty cool so you can find that yeah anything that's comic book based on film to

[01:31:05] adapt it to show or film will be showed up on panels pixel podcast yeah for adrenaline cinema

[01:31:12] podcast uh we covered recently real steel but i always make it open for anybody that wants to and

[01:31:19] then you know band had made a joke about it recently when we were covering monarch which

[01:31:25] i'll i'll talk about but uh he goes oh rob and i just took over that podcast i'm like not necessarily

[01:31:31] i'm there to host it and i just the idea of adrenaline is literally have so many pick out

[01:31:38] the movie we talk about it i get all the information so if anybody here or anybody out there that

[01:31:44] wants to be on it's more than welcome if something that we haven't covered that you're interested

[01:31:49] do contact us um so real steel was the last one that we have done we're doing the losers which

[01:31:56] will be both on panels pixel podcast as well as a turn on cinema podcast because it's both action

[01:32:02] and adapted from comic book to film and then yeah cool and you can hear me on fantasy picks movie

[01:32:09] edition as well and then obviously on podcast to go with monarch with band back himself which is

[01:32:17] a podcast to go slash will help podcast that's busy busy busy and that's the monarch that's

[01:32:23] the godzilla one right mark correct yeah i'm loving that yeah it's so much better than i expected it was

[01:32:30] going to be uh kurt russell and his son are just brilliant and that's so good that was brilliant

[01:32:37] just the mannerisms they've he's nailed his dad's mannerisms i mean he's got the the dna but

[01:32:42] like just uh yeah isn't that i'm yeah i'm excited i've i think i've watched five of them i'm

[01:32:50] going to hold back and then binge the rest of thing when it comes out but uh yeah it's a good one

[01:32:56] well great and um james what other podcast are you going to host next to you i know you have the

[01:33:01] solo coast with christin coming up that you have to do yeah and uh do that one yes yes well i don't

[01:33:08] want to chicken out with a headache again so if you are miss christin i miss you sorry uh i don't

[01:33:17] know i mean we can have a conversation about what we want to do and what what's coming up i mean

[01:33:21] is yeah because i think unfortunately the ones that we're being covering uh there's i don't think

[01:33:26] there's going to be anything on on next year that's it and of course you know what we have with the

[01:33:32] strikes everything's been pushed and like we said i mean i was confused and or would come back

[01:33:37] because they'd almost finished it well that was going to be the our big one for for next

[01:33:42] year yeah i feel like it's good buzz i might want to jump in on yeah no exactly look i think i think

[01:33:48] good to be yeah i mean i'm not sure but i think i might be we can get for that because i love all

[01:33:54] the lore of the old high republic and everything so i'm curious to see the sith thing and like i mean

[01:34:00] i did the one thing that got me really excited why don't we crowd cast that one all right yeah

[01:34:05] let's do let's okay because i think we should follow up the two four well star wars fans and

[01:34:10] keep for good or for bad i think we should keep up on all the shows and see what comes next

[01:34:17] but look thank you everyone for coming along it was really great and really good fun

[01:34:23] Jason congratulations on two years in a row of winning the pub quiz

[01:34:29] i mean jonathan thank you so much both of you guys for for doing this for wanting to

[01:34:33] do another one it's super fun it's just a joyous thing to do and i really appreciate it

[01:34:38] i think everyone's a little bit more sober this year than last year i think

[01:34:42] yes last year got a bit out of control i think maybe my tolerance is up i've been drinking the

[01:34:47] whole time oh yeah exactly right i just couldn't risk it i just did coffee all night

[01:34:55] but thanks again for for having us and uh for letting us be part of the podcast to go and

[01:35:02] and a special salute to jason our fearless leader for bringing us all along once again for a

[01:35:08] wonderful year i've really enjoyed this year and it's been super fun podcasting with everyone and

[01:35:14] thank you come for coming on and i am really looking forward to next year so if anyone has a

[01:35:21] needs a guest host i'll put my hands up i think i'm doing one or jason yeah he's coming on for

[01:35:28] the rewatch for an infamous probably the most infamous episode of The Walking Dead so we're

[01:35:35] yes yes i'm looking forward to that and uh james i'd like to see i'd like to listen to james

[01:35:41] without me there to hold his hands so if anyone would like to invite

[01:35:47] absolutely the only thing you can find something james are you a are you a lucky fan face

[01:35:55] i am not i am not is there any action adventure film that you like james

[01:36:01] oh there's a million of those there is a million of those i mean we didn't

[01:36:05] figure something out that's all we have to do but yeah i mean i'd get a look at what mark has the

[01:36:11] adrenaline cinema podcast where he covers action movies we did total recall recently that was really

[01:36:16] fun yeah that's cool the original i hope yes we did oh yeah it's good oh that was another

[01:36:25] Colin Farrell one it's embarrassing we made fun of it a little bit yeah i mean i mean we could i mean

[01:36:31] yeah let's yeah let's have a chat about so i mean i mean talking about it earlier i mean flash golden

[01:36:37] needs to re-go if you haven't done it oh i haven't even done flash gordon it could actually be

[01:36:42] posted on both panels and adrenaline so yeah we could we could definitely i mean like that's

[01:36:47] just epic like just the over the top campness and like oh i love it all right we should discuss mark

[01:36:55] we should discuss yes we will about one at least so let's do that all right perfect but yeah but no

[01:37:00] thanks jason for letting me sort of like tag along and for this year it's been fun and hopefully

[01:37:07] i'm just glad you guys even want to do it you have had such a great response and

[01:37:12] and i've had a blast doing it and i listened to one of my one of our early early ones i think we did

[01:37:20] the rogue one rewatch and i'm very hesitantly occasionally hitting a sound effect and now

[01:37:29] and now my is just like any excuse to put something in i'm like but i found it really fun

[01:37:36] to do and i really love to doing it and and there's some on some of all the listeners and

[01:37:40] actually all the hosts as well will support from you guys for the for the acerca cast was really good

[01:37:46] so thank you everyone and i hope to support you all in the next year yeah and all right but thanks

[01:37:52] for listening everyone and if you're feeling very generous hit that five star button and if

[01:39:29] now may the force be with you with you with you with you and may the force be with you everyone

[01:39:36] may the force be with you and with you always i am your father do it do obi just one last obi come on

[01:39:48] i am your father

[01:40:18] um

[01:41:18] Hello there, this is Obi-Wan Kenobi, and I shall be reading to you, Twas the Night

[01:41:26] Before Christmas.

[01:41:27] Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was staring, not

[01:41:34] even an owl.

[01:41:36] The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in the hope that St. Nicholas soon

[01:41:41] would be there.

[01:41:43] The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar plows danced in

[01:41:48] their heads.

[01:41:49] And Mamarina Cochife and I in my cup had settled our brains for a long winter snap.

[01:41:57] Without the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the

[01:42:03] better.

[01:42:04] Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shadows and threw open the

[01:42:09] sash.

[01:42:10] The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow gave the lustre of midday to objects below,

[01:42:17] when what to my wondering eye should appear.

[01:42:20] But a miniature sleigh and eight tidy reindeer with a little old driver so lively and quick

[01:42:27] I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick, more rapid than eagles his courses they came,

[01:42:34] and he whistled and shouted them, called them by name.

[01:42:37] Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer, now Vixen, oh Comet, oh Cupid, on Dunder and Blixen,

[01:42:44] to the top of the porch, to the top of the wall.

[01:42:48] Now Dasher away, Dasher away, Dasher away all.

[01:42:53] Merry Christmas everybody and may the force be with you.
