[00:00:00] Hey everyone, welcome to our podcast. I'm Mr. Blahg. And I'm Grace. And this is Under the Comic Covers, Episode 182. And in this episode we go under the comic covers of Copperhead 16, Wayward 25 and Manifest Destiny 32. Oh indeed, and our apologies for missing

[00:00:50] last week. Of course it was the holiday weekend with Thanksgiving and all here in the US. So thank you all for being patient. And Grace, seems like there was one other book we were

[00:01:02] going to be covering this week. Yeah, Rat Queens came out this week. Or last week actually. Last week. Yeah. And we were going to cover it in, I don't know, I'm just, I think

[00:01:14] I'm ready to lay it down. We're done. We're done. I'm not taking it off my poll list, but I just, it's been kind of uneven and I just can't bring myself to talk about it every month.

[00:01:26] It's been getting very difficult to talk about. And it's kind of upsetting when the best issue we've seen in a while was a one-off about Orc Dave. Yeah. So yeah, unfortunately folks, that's it for now. We're not going to be covering Rat Queens anymore. And

[00:01:42] sorry, I guess. But you know, we want to be able to talk about things we really enjoy. So yeah, makes it much, much easier. It really does. Well, Grace, how was your Thanksgiving? It was dandy. We went to my sister-in-law and brother-in-law's house. And so I didn't really

[00:02:03] have to cook too much about a couple of things. And dinner was really good. Family was good. You know, can't complain. No cleanup. The best part. Yeah. So, but I was really busy. My in-laws

[00:02:17] are moving back up from Florida. And so we were house hunting and it was a very busy week. So I'm glad to be, ever have everything back to normal. Right. Now, yeah, I didn't have Thanksgiving

[00:02:32] at my place. I also went to my sister-in-brother-in-law's family. I mean, everything for the most part was pretty good, although it was in a very small place. My sister-in-law's never had a

[00:02:42] Thanksgiving. It was eight adults, one teen, five kids between two and seven. It got a little chaotic and we were very happy to escape. And then we ended up having kind of a second Thanksgiving

[00:02:53] on Saturday where I cooked, I found a sub 10 pound turkey, a nine point something or other pound turkey called a petite turkey, cooked that up on Saturday with some mashed potatoes

[00:03:05] and gravy and stuff. I mean, I kind of did the whole nine yards. Nice. And yeah, it was nice. And I loved it because I kind of... Because you like to cook. So, you know. I do and I hate it.

[00:03:14] I do not enjoy cooking. So it was a nice rest for me not to have to do it, but that sounds wonderful. Yeah. I mean, it was nice not to have the cleanup for Thanksgiving, but I ended up making

[00:03:26] my own cleanup mess. And even yesterday, I made a French onion soup. I made my own beef stock to for the French onion. It was really nice. That was fun. And today a nice Boulonnay's. I don't

[00:03:37] know, it's been... My daughter has been sick at home. So I've been here with her and... Home and cooking. Cooking. Yeah. Making good use of your time. Absolutely. Very nice. I wouldn't mind

[00:03:47] something that Boulionnay's. I wished I lived closer. Me too. But we're not here to talk about Boulonnay's. We're here to talk about comic books. Grace, what kind of news do you have

[00:03:57] for us this week? Okay. Well, my news item this week is about Image Comics documentary that is called So Much Damage. And it's a five part series and it's chronicling like they say the rise and fall

[00:04:15] and comeback of Image Comics and its lasting influence on the entertainment industry as a whole. It has like interviews with the company's founders and I... The first part is out. Did I say that already?

[00:04:31] But it's a five part series. I haven't watched the first part, but I did watch the trailer, which is pretty long. And I did tweet... No, not tweet. I shared on Facebook

[00:04:42] the link to the first one and I'm definitely going to watch it. I really enjoyed the trailer and the bit of information I got from that. And it's great seeing all the guys and of course Kirkman's on there and he talked about how he heard the story of

[00:05:01] all the guys leaving and all that stuff. So it's... I don't know, it seems really cool and informative and a definite must watch for me. So check that out. Where do we find this?

[00:05:13] Well, I tweeted it out. It's on the sci-fi... Okay. Channel. It's a sci-fi documentary, but I just watched it on the trailer online and I shared the link on Facebook. So just kind of look at our

[00:05:28] page there too. Awesome. Thank you. That's fantastic. I have one little item which is very self-serving, but if some of you may recall two years ago, myself and Jason and Karen from The Walking Dead cast along with David, Karen's husband, soon to be of the Westworld podcast,

[00:05:49] part of podcast. Two years ago we reviewed Star Wars, episode seven, The Force Awakens and it was a, I don't know how should we say, contentious episode. It was probably the... It was a bizarre one where Jason got a little negative, shall we say, and things got a

[00:06:09] little contentious, but we're going to try it again. We're doing it again this year for Star Wars, episode eight, The Last Jedi. We'll be recording this on Sunday, December 17th, so look for that

[00:06:23] probably on the 18th, that Monday. It should be fun. I don't know, of course, don't know what the movie's going to be. Jason did announce this on Facebook. He did promise, I think in his words,

[00:06:34] to be human and I think he will try not to be quite as bad as he was the last time in the one episode of a podcast. I could never really go back and lose it. So this human means more positive? I don't really...

[00:06:49] Well... Or just, is that no apologies for last year? He was just human. No, no, no, no, no. I think that just means like he's not going to be as argumentative.

[00:06:58] We'll see. I don't know, I'm looking forward to it, but no, really, I am looking forward to it. I cannot wait. I mean, I don't know, I feel like this is the first Star Wars movie, new one that

[00:07:11] I'll be seeing with a Star Wars tattoo and I'm kind of excited about that. So even though that has nothing to do with any of it, but I get excited. It really is.

[00:07:24] It should. I never listened to that podcast because I knew it kind of had a little negative tone to it and I don't like my friends fighting or not. No, no, we were fighting. Really,

[00:07:39] you should go back. I want you to go back and listen to it. I'd love to hear two years later your take on it. I think it would be hilarious. Yeah, two years later, it probably would be funny.

[00:07:49] You should give it a listen. You really should. And that could be found on the Walking Deadcast folks episode Lord Knows. I have no idea. It was two years ago. You didn't memorize that? What's that? You didn't memorize that? No, certainly not that one. All right,

[00:08:10] should we go ahead and get talking about some of these comics? We got three to talk about tonight. We do and I'm already starting to get loopy so we better get on with it. I might have to take my time. No, okay, very well. Let's get going.

[00:08:23] And we begin with previously in Copperhead. Okay, in the last issue or a couple issues, we have Clay and his sidekick Annabelle have arrived in Copperhead and there's a big knockdown

[00:08:43] drag out with Clara as she was trying to apprehend a criminal and then they show up at the end and we don't exactly know what happened to her but she's nowhere to be found. We assume they've kidnapped

[00:08:58] her and since she's gone missing there's no law enforcement really to speak of in Copperhead. So Lieutenant Ford kind of takes over and deputizes Luke and the teacher because he's about the only person that he really trusts. So they're trying to find Clara and we also get the

[00:09:22] bomb dropped on us that Zeke is not Clara's son surprise surprise. That was a big deal. I believe that was Lieutenant Ford that dropped that bomb on us and we were all pretty shocked. No, I thought it was it was...

[00:09:37] Oh, you're right. It was wasn't it? For some reason I thought it was Clara telling them that but no. Yeah, I think it was Lieutenant Ford. No, great. It is Lieutenant Ford. Yeah.

[00:09:48] So anyway, so fun issue and now this one kind of starts right up there with Clara and the duo there Clay and Annabelle. I like that we got just to kick into it just real quick.

[00:10:04] I like that we got A, the binary sons which is very Star Wars right there in the very first frame. But I like that this is kind of a return to some of the older Scott Godluschi things where he would...

[00:10:20] Godleski, excuse me. I was just going to correct you. I'm sure you were. Where we get the Vistas, where we get the panoramics. Mm-hmm. You know, and I appreciated that even though it's not quite the same at least it is a throwback to

[00:10:35] that old Western feel. What were your thoughts on this issue? I thought it was a fun issue, very focused but definitely some things I really liked about it. For sure. For sure. Well, let's go ahead and dig in. What's your number three?

[00:10:50] Okay. My number three is Lukens Informant and I just got a big kick out of that because, you know, Luken just even himself he said he would not be a good deputy and blah, blah, blah.

[00:11:06] But he's stepping up man and he really is. He's in the resources that he has and I just found it quite humorous and just the whole thing. What was his name? Buster the kid?

[00:11:18] Well, I was going to how long did you think for how long did you think it was actually the kid that was his informant? I did. I did. Yeah, I did.

[00:11:27] Yeah. Up until he said please get your father. I'm like, oh, I thought it was the kid because he's such a little asshole. Well, the dad's a big asshole. So. Yeah, fair enough. But I like the dad's tail.

[00:11:40] So the kid is like don't take anything. Don't take nothing. He's like the teacher. But that whole exchange I just found quite amusing and, you know, the look on Lukens face like when he knew the way to get to Buster's dad was priceless.

[00:12:03] He was very proud of himself I think. He could have this but it was great. I found it very fun. Well, this works out very well because my number three was actually Ford and Deputy Lukens.

[00:12:14] I think they're a great pair. And I kind of I didn't care much for Ford and I'm suddenly kind of growing on him a bit. And these two together oddly enough work.

[00:12:27] Yeah, I like it much better when he's not like trying to hit on Clara and kind of take over the family. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. So, you know, we get a little exposition with him. But for the

[00:12:39] most part I did enjoy it. I very specifically did enjoy the whole thing with Lukens and his informant. And the way he worked it, I thought he did a great job. And you know, it showed a particular moral flexibility that I appreciated. Moral flexibility. I like that.

[00:12:57] I really appreciate it. There are bigger issues on the planet than Buster's grades, you know. Exactly. Or accurate reporting of Buster's grades maybe I should say. Yeah, like finding his hot girlfriend. That's really what we're talking about. So... They're not boyfriend-girlfriend. Well... You were like a hookup woman.

[00:13:18] One night stand. You're right, you're right, you're right. Okay, a little... I didn't think you had to finish the whole... Is that a swipe left or a swipe right? I don't know which is which. But she did one...

[00:13:29] Okay, what's your number two? I have no clue about that shit. Number two. My number two was the whole Fiona and Zeke backstory. I like how they work that in. You know, I like seeing younger maybe more vulnerable Clara.

[00:13:47] And the whole thing makes total sense because you know, I was like thinking in my mind they both have that red hair. How is he not her son? And you know, I like the reveal and it felt very

[00:14:02] natural and feel forced. It just... I liked the exchange between the two sisters and all that. And you know, there's obviously some things that we still don't know about. Do you know who they reminded me of? Even though Clara's the older one.

[00:14:20] Do you know who they reminded me of? Uh-uh. Who? Oh, dear God. I just... Dana and M from Revival. Yeah. Okay. But Clara a little bit is M, right? Like the kind of pouty thing that you want to touch it. I'm sick.

[00:14:38] There's a lot about this that I got a kick out of them as well. I thought they were fantastic. And getting that little bit of backstory really I think shifts my perception of Clara. Also.

[00:14:56] Well, we learn a hell of a lot about her. I mean that she was a marine who got a dishonorable discharge. So what happened there? Disonorable discharge. Definitely in my notes, yeah. Yeah. The fact that she has this difficulty in staying put anywhere and following anything

[00:15:13] through her dislike of children. Just all these things that we actually do learn about her or the fact that her love life is shit, which that's not surprising at all seeing the way that she is.

[00:15:27] But it's interesting to get this much about her and I do have this... You know, it does now change my perception of her as being... And also the fact that she was not with Clay.

[00:15:40] You know, that was her sister. Her sister was the one planning some big crime. Yes. With Clay. That definitely... I liked that. Knowing that information, her sister was the stupid one that was wrapped up with Clay. That was good to know.

[00:15:57] And just if you think about it because of what's revealed and what her life is now and the sacrifices that she's made for Zeke, but also to think she loves him so much and I mean, he's her world. Yeah.

[00:16:14] So to go from where she was here and at this point in the backstory to where she is now as we know her just... I guess all she needed was Zeke too to kind of ground her maybe and

[00:16:29] get her a little more emotionally stable. I don't know. Slightly. Maybe, yeah. Yeah. But yeah, that was great. So that was my number two. That's fantastic. Yeah. I did really enjoy that little segment I thought it was funny. And again,

[00:16:47] I feel it kind of rewrites this whole book now. I'm like, oh my God, I have to look at look at Clara through a totally different lens and... Yeah. I can see that, yeah. You know, we got some scenes in here where she looks down right evil

[00:16:59] the way she's being drawn. I'm like, holy, what the damn, Clara, he looks scary. Yeah, she does. That blood running down her face. Yeah. Very M from Revival. All right, my number two. Rest in peace, Mrs. Sewell.

[00:17:18] She's a character that I know you love and I love and it was very... That's a shitty way to go man. Shot in the back by this asshole. That's... Oh, poor Zeke. Right in front of Zeke. At least she died doing her duty, you know?

[00:17:39] She did. Yeah, look at... Look at poor Zeke crying there. I know crying. And it's funny because just like every issue where she reappears in some small way when I saw her again, I was like, oh, Mrs. Sewell.

[00:17:54] You know, I was like, oh, so naive and just happy to see her. And then zerk, zerk, zerk. I was in shock. I kind of probably looked like Zeke. I wasn't crying but

[00:18:08] more angry. But I really hope we get some of her kin coming out for revenge if Clara doesn't take care of Clay herself or even Zeke. I don't know. We'll see what happens.

[00:18:21] So that was my number two, rest in peace, Mrs. Sewell. That whole thing really bummed me out. And really this whole end I thought was pretty... I guess this is a good time to talk about the end.

[00:18:32] Is that your number one by some chance? That was my number one. Let's do it. No, well no. My number one was Mrs. Sewell, is what I mean. Oh. But one more thing on the Mrs. Sewell scene is that I was surprised that Zeke

[00:18:46] knew Clay was his father. I'm not sure that he did. He said dad. Well, he said dad because he says, hey son, dad. Okay, that makes much more sense. Which by the way, I have to say this again,

[00:19:03] this is so kindergarten cop. It's not even funny. This is exactly the way kindergarten cop goes down. Except in this case, Ishmael is Arnold Schwarzenegger because he shows up. It's going to be alright Zeke. Drop your weapon and step away from the boy.

[00:19:24] I'm not going to tell you twice. I could totally see. So from now on, Ezekiel will always be Schwarzenegger for me. One more step and... Ishmael, excuse me. One more step and you are dead.

[00:19:35] That's awesome. It does have a robotic. He does kind of have almost a robotic weird onto his voice so it might work. Right? So from now on, Schwarzenegger, Ishmael. Very good. You do a good Schwarzenegger, I must say.

[00:19:49] Thank you very much. He was the governor of my state, you know. Yes, I did know that. Okay, so your number one was what? My number one, Clara's past, which you have already talked about.

[00:20:05] But also, yeah, no, that's really pretty much it was Clara's past. I really did like that. I did love the exchange between she and Annabelle. Is that her name? I need to remember the scary doll in the Conjuring to remember Annabelle, I guess.

[00:20:23] I did love that whole exchange. It was a lot of exposition. I got a little freaked out by the evil looking Clara face. The art is still... Trying to get you to it, yeah.

[00:20:37] Sometimes I still have a hard time sometimes. But I did like the reveal at the very end about how many Arties, you know, the Clay killed that he was in a war. He has PTSD. I mean, we learned a lot about all of these characters.

[00:20:51] This was a really good issue for character development. And I appreciate it for that. Do you have any notes? Well, my main note was just the disarmable discharge. So no, I don't really have any notes. Cool. All right, let's go ahead and move on to the letter.

[00:21:13] We got one letter here from Matt. Matt, how are you doing? You came through for us again. Happy Thanksgiving by the way. Very bladed. So we found out about the reveal from last issue. Bronson is Zeke's aunt.

[00:21:28] For some reason, I was expecting it to be something more nefarious, but that would seem counter to everything we know so far about Bronson's character. I thought this issue went by really quick. It left me wanting more. I suppose that's a good thing.

[00:21:42] Yeah. Well, it was pretty concentrated on one story. So yeah, I think I need to go by fast. Very much. All right, Grace, we're ready to go ahead and move on to wayward number 25. I am. Let's do it. Very good. It's not a tumor.

[00:22:22] All right. Welcome back, everyone. It's now time to talk about wayward number 25. And we begin with previously in wayward. All right, so last issue. We were back in Ireland where Dermot and the two

[00:22:53] Druids along with Rory show up to basically wreak some havoc on the magic world of the what are they? Fairies basically. So the fairies have been kind of hoarding on to the magic

[00:23:05] of Ireland's past and Dermot and the Druids want to free that magic for the new gods to be able to move on very much like the war that's happening in Japan at the same time between the new gods

[00:23:18] and the old gods. It's a passing of a torch, so to speak. So they want to release it. They use Rory for this. Rory creates all this damage and just destroys the fuck out of Fairyland.

[00:23:31] And we see in there that there are like families and women and children. And she feels really guilty about this, but her power is just all enveloping. And then Dermot comes up

[00:23:41] behind her, like, I'm so sorry, but I got to do this and jabs her with a magic knife. And it looks like she's going to die at the very end there. And that is pretty much where this issue picks up. Was that a pretty good summary?

[00:23:57] That was great. That's the best one I've ever heard from you. No, that's not true. But you were surprised because I did notice something like you've really been taking a lot of the previously ons and I really appreciate that because

[00:24:08] I'm bad at them. So thank you. I thought I did a decent job of that one. Part of it is that really, I love this book. It's great. The last issue was really amazing. And I was waiting to see what the fuck was going to happen with Rory.

[00:24:22] Seriously? And this did not disappoint me at all. So what were your thoughts on it? It was amazing. It was super great. It was touching. You're happy with it. It was funny stuff. I just hit it on all points. Oh, very good. Okay. What's your number three?

[00:24:43] Oh, my number three. Oh, it was just the funny, the shoe coming to life. I thought it was mildly funny the first time I read it, but like on consecutive reads, I just found it just to be super funny. That's better to put, but you know,

[00:24:57] I'm going to put that as my three as well. That was actually my number two was the living shoe and I also loved Inaba's little jokes. I mean, there weren't really even jokes, just just the little things that she sang specifically about the shoe. That was pretty

[00:25:10] funny. You know, what she said, did you see that? That was really weird, something like that. And then as she goes like, what's that? No, I'm just laughing because she thinks

[00:25:23] she takes care of it. She's like, shh. She cuts the shoe, takes care of that. And then you see a little umbrella. Yeah, I love it. Skipping through the water. There it is right here. Yes. Oh, for

[00:25:33] fuck's sake. That was so ridiculous. But you know, you read through this stuff that Zach Davidson writes about the history of all these gods and different little things and the spirits and inanimate objects coming to life. And you know, it's just,

[00:25:53] was fun to watch it. And that is what this right, this is one of the little inanimate object things that were following Ohara out, right? Yeah. Okay, that's what they were. Well, yeah, the little, I assume the spirits or that's what I figured as well.

[00:26:08] Because my first thought when actually when I saw it, my first thought was, oh my God, it's the multi-eyed blob thing. It's one of the old gods. It's come back and then

[00:26:16] Inaba is just like, you know, took care of it real quick. But no, you're right. I think it was one of those kind of bad work because it was so excited to be, you know, it was just so joyful for that moment.

[00:26:28] Well, the umbrella is pretty happy and they leave the umbrella alone. So that's still off hopping around doing its own thing. Still hopping around Tokyo somewhere. I also loved it when Inaba runs up to try to free Shirai and Emmy and then as Shirai's

[00:26:45] getting quite angry and she's like, never mind. I think it's about to solve itself. And she hurries out as she hurries the hell out of there. Exactly the way her arms are like, she's out of there. Really loved that. I thought that was really funny. And again,

[00:27:02] like you said, you like to say right at the front a really nice mix of the exciting, the emotional, the funny. We get a whole lot of that in this one even if it is just

[00:27:11] little scenes like that, that eyeball shoe smacking a segawa on the forehead was fantastic. So if you just read it once and you didn't wholeheartedly enjoy it the first time, read through it again because it gets funnier. It's like I feel like it's one of those,

[00:27:27] like I have a hard time sometimes with comedy like movies because I'm too wrapped up in the plot to really enjoy the humor the first time around. And I always find it funnier, you know, the more I watch it. Anyway, so by the way, what's a,

[00:27:43] what was that movie? I said was it Girls Trip Girls Trip? Tiffany Hadish and I forget who Queen Latifa funny movie saw that not too long. And actually I also saw atomic blonde kick ass movie love that one. I don't know why that popped into

[00:27:58] my head. Okay, so random movie, random movie reviews with Mr. blog. What's your number two? Are we back on me again? My number two, it's sort of a split one here. I put because it was,

[00:28:15] I guess the whole sentiment, but that panel where Emmy and Rory are holding hands and just the whole deciding to live. I love that. And I loved, you know, I don't have like the super

[00:28:33] strong will to live. So sometimes like in movies and stuff, I'm like, why do they even go to all this trouble? You know, like when I saw the road, I'm like, gosh, just off yourself. You know,

[00:28:48] this is a horrible life. Oh my Lord. That's, this just got real dark. Wow. Okay. Thank you for sharing. No, it's like, I'm just too lazy really. All right. I threw all that. But anyway, so but I really like, you know, so, you know, Rory, you know,

[00:29:06] she kind of played that part of my lazy brain plays sometimes she's like, you know, we could, we could just not go and you know, stay in this nice peaceful place here and not have to deal

[00:29:17] with all that. But I liked, you know, Emmy talking to her into it and, and, you know, also it's the coming, coming together again, again of the two of them, you know, after all the turmoil.

[00:29:33] But I just, and I think that that one panel kind of just expresses all the emotion that I kind of feel it's like, you know, you know, come on, we can do this,

[00:29:43] we're in this together kind of sentiment and deciding to live and I thought that was great. Loved it, loved it. And kind of gets me choked up. So it's great.

[00:29:54] Very nice. Could not agree more. You know, my one and two are kind of halves of the same hole as well. But my number two goes back or to a little bit earlier and that is sacrifice.

[00:30:09] And I really enjoy that we get this great explanation, you know, as, as Ohara is hell bent on rejecting Rory and telling her why she hates her and how could she do that but making her parents for forget about her. We were very mad at her.

[00:30:25] We were very mad at her. Absolutely. I thought she definitely overstepped her bounds. And it's interesting now to finally get the whole story, the whole story from from her perspective and why she did that

[00:30:38] and to get the backstory on each one of the kids and what it is each one had to sacrifice in order for their powers to really come to fruition in order for them to be

[00:30:51] you know who they are now the new gods whether they knew it or not. And that's what I find so fascinating to Shariah. That's just heartbreaking that he was starving, you know, Nikaito just needing pure isolation. So his whole family he burned to

[00:31:07] a crisp by it by exploding in the way that we've already seen. Shariah, like I said, being in a hospital, Rory cutting herself. We've already covered some of that I think in the

[00:31:16] past but Ohara this was an interesting one. You know what? Because she was just kind of normal. She didn't have anything big happen to her. Yeah. So it was just the idea of

[00:31:27] having power that she didn't have before. And then to see this image as Rory is talking about it of Ohara's parents being killed, it was like, oh so she actually did it to save her parents. You know,

[00:31:42] okay. Maybe I'm a you know there was still a sacrifice on you know that Ohara needed to go through but yeah, you know her parents didn't have to be sacrificed at the same time. Exactly.

[00:31:55] Yeah. So I like the bigger perspective it gives on all of the characters on why it is what they're doing now it's even making me think of the old gods and what did they have to sacrifice.

[00:32:08] There really is just a lot here and ultimately the really big one here is Dermot. Yes. So we haven't really touched on Dermot yet but that is really the ultimate sacrifice, right?

[00:32:23] I mean he and the two Druids in all fairness they gave up their lives to free the magic of Ireland for better or for worse. I still don't know quite how I feel about that.

[00:32:37] Sure. So we yes, so we find out ultimately what he sacrificed was that he agreed to all those years ago it wasn't killing Rory his daughter sacrificing his own life. Yeah. To release her

[00:32:52] magic. Yes. Very, very good. And it really it saddened me to see the image I'm flipping through it right now trying to find it. The emptiness of the fairyland if you I can't remember what

[00:33:08] it's yeah there it is. Yeah that was sad because it was such a beautiful place. It really was to see it utterly destroyed like that. Yeah. Yeah. And now we also see the extent of Rory's power. Yeah, I'm trying to find that two page

[00:33:29] spread. Oh yeah. Right at the beginning. Yeah. The destruction. That's pretty you know I say spectacular but I mean that only in the terms of whoa. The amount of destruction. Yeah. Something else on that one. So that's my number two sacrifice definitely seems to be a major theme

[00:33:55] going on with the series now and what we've been looking at the whole time. Yeah. So you know go ahead. I don't know maybe this can help us feel a little better about Dermot. Definitely. Yeah. You know it was to sacrifice himself not his daughter.

[00:34:14] How do I feel about the fairy folk being killed in the way that they were and their land destroyed? I don't know but we'll see. We'll see. Yeah. I do feel better about them. I must say that

[00:34:33] but yeah it's still when you look at the panel of the emptiness and the darkness of you know what used to be their land and that's hard to see so I don't want to forget that either.

[00:34:48] I'm glad that was my number one by the way of course but I did like going back these flashbacks and going back to Rory cutting yourself because you know that was kind of a big

[00:35:01] deal. Was that not first issue? Yeah I think so. Yeah. First arc if it wasn't the first issue and we haven't seen all that much of it lately or kind of really touched on all that much. I

[00:35:16] love that they went back and you know showed this and kind of showed some more of how she was feeling and why she did it and you know how it made her feel about the control and everything so

[00:35:31] I was glad to see that touched on again because it's been a while so it all of it. Very good. And Cherai and Emmy and the whole thing. My number one was actually about Rory and Emmy making up but I want to go ahead and push it

[00:35:51] to the very last couple pages and the reemergence of Rory. Wow that is a phenomenal entrance. That is how you enter a room right? It's like I just came out of Emmy and a bunch of threads

[00:36:08] and there's a ball and boom she opens up like the Venus out of a clamshell and then that final scene and I gotta say one little bit got me a little heartbroken.

[00:36:19] The cats in the background. The cats? Well that got you heartbroken I get that gets me hopeful. All right you're thinking hopeful I'm a little heartbroken because I feel like Ayane is not there she should be maybe she'll come back. I think she's there.

[00:36:35] Okay so then we got like you know Cherai boy he looks really happy when he sees Emmy O'Hara coming back I think there's a little love thing going on there. Definitely. Yeah they were in the

[00:36:48] love hotel together. Yeah look and how his. Then she became the love hotel and then he freed her from the love hotel. That was creepy when she was so tall. Oh yeah that's it's great

[00:37:03] it's been it feels like it's been ages has it been two arcs since we've seen everybody together? It's been a long time yeah and I just got dammit where's Ayane come on. Come on Jim come on Stephen

[00:37:16] bring us to Ayane. She's back there see that little. I hope that's them I hope that's them I really do hope that's her but I loved it you're right it's been a long time since they've been

[00:37:25] together. Segawa has never really been part of them so it's kind of cool that he's now you know techno master. Yeah we're getting a pretty cool assemblage of new gods here

[00:37:41] in a naba I do love a naba she's so funny. I need you. And I don't know God where's Ayane okay now I'm just rambling I miss them all and you know it's on this one. Nope I

[00:37:55] not that we haven't covered pretty well or something else we should talk about I'm trying to flip through. No this but this is the end of the arc I mean this this is the end of it so we're gonna have

[00:38:05] are we gonna have a wait I'm not really 100% sure if we have a wait on this one or not. Probably. Well regardless cannot wait for the next arc can't wait to see where they're going

[00:38:16] Justice League has formed and yeah it's gonna be groovy moving on let's see where are we gonna get back to to Narrow Rory and Narrow Rion. Ah shit I've been drinking I apologize Gordhead. Everybody hopes that we don't because they're tired of hearing us mispronounce his name or

[00:38:37] Narrow Rion okay whatever damn it Grace mail quickly quickly. Okay Matt came through on this one as well I really enjoyed this issue there were some really great stylistic things I like the first page origin stories for each of the new gods I like

[00:38:56] the way those pages were laid out and bordered with the ribbons. Yes the the web yeah whatever the end with Rory teleporting for lack of a better word from her damaged self through

[00:39:11] the threads of fate remind me reminded me I didn't make the connection until this issue but there is a series of novels by Brian Lumley called Necroscope in which the protagonist can teleport using

[00:39:27] something he calls the Mobius Continuum and while inside of the continuum he can see what he calls life threads that represent people's lives in Lumley's series the continuum can be used to

[00:39:41] both travel through time as well as into other dimensions not sure if that is where this is going but I think it would be pretty cool if it did thanks for the podcast I'm looking forward to

[00:39:53] hearing your thoughts on this week's comics I hope you and all of your listeners have or have had a great Thanksgiving Matt in Iowa thanks Matt thanks Matt really appreciate that

[00:40:06] grace in honor of Dermot I feel like we should have a shot of whiskey do you have any whiskey nearby a nearby no um and I'm not much of a whiskey drinker but all right well never mind I will

[00:40:22] have a I'll raise my I'll raise my bottled water to Dermot here's my wine to Dermot we hardly knew you toodaloo rest in peace Dermot we're gonna take a quick break and then we're gonna come back talk about manifest destiny number 32

[00:40:53] beautiful girl love the dress where she is now I can only guess because it's gone daddy gone love is gone it's gone daddy gone love is gone it's gone daddy gone love is gone it's gone daddy gone love is gone away

[00:41:16] all right howdy howdy pilgrim it's now time to go ahead and talk about manifest destiny number 32 when we begin with previously in manifest destiny okay in the last arc they were still sort

[00:41:32] of recovering from the fog monster and kind of recouping and getting their heads back on straight we had there we had sacajawea I almost called I almost called her a Pocahontas with all the Pocahontas in the news oh no sorry it's like a Elizabeth Warren

[00:42:01] sacajawea had her son she's basically just feeding him she's not wanting much to do with them sponiphosses is bringing him to her I think Lewis was still out watching the arch

[00:42:16] uh that was it Wally who disappeared into it or was thrown into it I should say yeah yeah he was not we have we have our little ghost man uh gosh what was his name Maldonado Maldonado appearing to

[00:42:33] different people we found out that her little ghost guy her little Spanish ghost guy I love it he is appearing to other people you know we found out that he was appearing to Clark when

[00:42:47] Clark was we realized when Clark we saw a Clark journaling anyway so um all that good stuff happened and this kind of starts you know in a new new spot which I really liked when we have a

[00:43:02] new journalist here yes we do and um right off the bat I was kind of like oh fuck I want to have to translate all of this right now oh I'm so glad you read it before I did because you went through

[00:43:19] all that you're like texting me oh fuck it's all in French Irene is journaling I'm like oh no oh and then you know then you realized as um I'm sure other people finally did probably after

[00:43:32] translating that the translation guide is in the back after the letters yes it is but it's funny because at least my my high school French came in a little bit handy because I honestly was able

[00:43:44] to translate and understand at least half of what she was writing so I felt pretty good about that but I could say maybe get 25 to well like I can't even context context matters context

[00:44:01] really really helps so really though it was such a cool little tweak to to the whole thing and I loved it I thought it was a great reminder that this is very much a multicultural expedition

[00:44:16] and especially to us Americans who have a problem with you know any other language other than English or any other culture other than our own so um I loved it I thought this was fantastic and I

[00:44:34] thought this this issue was whole is this the beginning this is the beginning of a new a new arc right I believe so yeah great intro to a new arc I really love this really this is

[00:44:49] I mean it's there we've man because we've had some really good stuff but I really thought they nailed it with this issue I just I loved it let's get into it what's your number three okay oh yeah

[00:45:02] oh I forgot to tell you I didn't do and I didn't do a top three so you go for sake really I didn't I kind of just wanted to ramble about this and it was so centered and I was like yeah

[00:45:15] all right no no no fair enough fair enough um you go through yours and we'll ramble okay fine my number three is actually what I think it was gonna probably it might be really

[00:45:26] very much on your mind and many of our readers minds holy fuck the incredible timeliness of this issue yes this is an issue about rape and sexual assault and the after effects that this

[00:45:41] has on women and and how different people respond to these sorts of things and and it's so fucking ridiculously timely it's not even funny and and I think it attacked it in such a

[00:45:58] way head on and remarkably well done way that I just I feel like Chris and and Matthew should be seriously patting themselves on the back for their their I don't I don't know whatever it is

[00:46:16] their present understanding that this is something that is an important and very serious issue and they brought it to the forefront in this particular issue and I thought it was amazing

[00:46:29] the timing on this which is for sure pure serendipity I mean there's no planning these kinds of things out maybe there is I don't know he could have moved this up or moved it around for all I really

[00:46:43] doubt it considering how long it takes you know to write the script and and to get a drawn an inked in all that I think this was regardless the guy on the first page on the bottom left

[00:46:54] he doesn't kind of look like Matt Lauer a little bit just needs a little bit of fear geez uh so this I yeah like you said I that was so much on my mind reading through this and

[00:47:10] and I you know I think hearing it from Irene's perspective yes just made all the difference yeah and you know I just read on Twitter today I just went through and read one woman's

[00:47:28] one you know I can't remember she was an editor or creator um just story about um you know some sexual harassment in the which in the comic industry which you know obviously is not unheard of um

[00:47:45] but just you know I had just reading that through her own that story from her perspective it just makes all the difference than just reading some news or something like that on it and so I think

[00:47:57] the same thing with with um Irene telling it just made such a huge difference and it just really helps you understand so much more well this issue could be manifest destiny hashtag me too true yes very much you know seriously we're getting we're getting Irene's story and and

[00:48:19] look I I almost forgot about this whole thing between Hardy and Irene you know it's been so long ago in the comic you kind of forget about it and this really brings it back and into the

[00:48:28] forefront of your mind and to see this you know I was kind of happy about this guy getting his new leg I was like oh yeah that's great I was and the way they described it about you know even

[00:48:39] madam Boniface being just disgusted with the idea that that they made a leg for him and to see him all happy I'm like oh god that's right he's the fucking rapist I totally forgot about you

[00:48:50] know it's and it's and then you get into society and and exactly what we're talking about in the way that people gloss over or I didn't realize or I knew something was going on

[00:49:03] whatever it is and it's it's it's an uncomfortable thing to have these facts about men in power shoved up into your face on a day-to-day basis lately but it's something that we have to reckon

[00:49:16] with not you necessarily I mean but as a man I have to reckon with these kinds of things and it's been actually very heartening because in this whole thing I've had a lot of conversations

[00:49:27] with women and I've had a lot of conversations with my men met my men my male friends with men about these and and calling this shit out and and making sure that you know the people I know

[00:49:42] we would we were willing we're there to call this shit I love this issue for that and and it's just so damn timely sorry I went off on a tangent there no understandable very very valid

[00:49:56] and you need to be said so it's just it's it's been everywhere in the news and I just fucking pisses me off or it's like really another guy another fucking guy you just said Matt Lauer although I gotta say the Matt Lauer thing doesn't totally surprise me

[00:50:10] only because of this past addiction problems with cocaine I mean that dude knew had a party so you know I don't know much about his past or anything but you know and it also reading through this and hearing the news and actually I can't even really

[00:50:27] think about this issue without thinking about real life and yeah what's going on but you know you look at the story told in Irene's time and you think well yeah that's it was

[00:50:40] so hard for women that's you know what they had to put up with and how people looked at them and then you think that god we really haven't come as far as we know with as we need to come we

[00:50:53] really have not and that has been driven home time and time again um you know these past few months or you know even the past year or so uh so yeah I love that Lewis Lewis flat out he's like

[00:51:10] no I fucking think you're scum and I'm gonna have somebody else bring me my food I love that I was here as I ah right on to Lewis yeah kudos to Lewis man you know he he

[00:51:22] did you remember his name this time I honestly had to think about it I was like he's the one that I always think is Clark so it must be Lewis I feel like Clark should have

[00:51:34] dark hair I don't know why um maybe because that was my nickname for a while I've told you that right maybe why well okay so my nickname for a while with some of my my old band members no

[00:51:52] no it's fine back when I was like 19 or so you know 18 19 I was Clark specifically because I wear glasses and but when I used to play I would always take my glasses off

[00:52:05] so it was kind of the Superman thing exactly so I was Clark when I had my glasses on but I would when I would play yeah okay and that was with a band with the greatest band name

[00:52:16] I swear ever we were the electric mojo soul explosion okay really one of the best I think greatest ever might be like subjective possibly you think but love that band something deal electric mojo soul explosion we were amazing it was and we even

[00:52:45] okay now that's this is a real tangent you're right okay um okay so story and well well we were okay so that was my number three was the incredible timely this is issue let's move on from

[00:52:58] that uh my number two since we're going about it this way um the monotony I like that we got a sense of the monotony of them being in this and I think that plays into Irene's obsession over Hardy and

[00:53:14] seeing him but but the monotony and Buffalo I love this repetition of Buffalo uh oh yes Buffalo took me a second time no the food the food options that basically everything is fucking

[00:53:30] Buffalo uh well and and it makes you realize and that goes along with the monotony but like just how you know it's winter and they're all in this fort and they're kind of all stuck there together

[00:53:43] and like she can't you know she can't escape him and she like like she's saying and she can't even the other men she can't escape their eyes and and their thoughts behind the eyes and

[00:53:53] and all that it all plays into it but yes but here's something I find fascinating and and it's a shame I can't talk to Irene and be able to tell her this is looking at her routine and you know she does

[00:54:06] the cooking she does this she does that she takes care of the her existence is far richer it seems in any of these dudes maybe think of no no no no she has what she has a purpose she's doing

[00:54:25] something she's feeding yes she is what are these other guys doing these other guys are they built the fort you know but they're doing nothing I mean granted Hardy's learning how to walk that's a

[00:54:37] pretty good thing but well he was they're hunting the Buffalo right I guess so yeah they're probably oh you're right okay I guess that's a pretty good thing I'm assuming the man didn't aren't just giving them buffalo so but I don't think Buffalo are that hard to hunt

[00:54:54] especially in the winter I say that that may be one of the most ignorant things I've ever said they may be really hard to hunt the win I don't have no experience and I've never hunted Buffalo so I don't

[00:55:07] know just seems to me you could walk up tip them over but that's just cows and sleeping cows too and sleeping cows anyway I've never tipped over a cow all right my number one let's go ahead and move

[00:55:23] on to it and this is really the main thing of this issue of course Irene's revenge Irene's revenge and second to we as assistants you know this entire thing I thought it was pretty badass it was

[00:55:42] pretty amazing man I really enjoyed it and I wonder how long she was following her like I wonder if she was following her before before Irene met up with um Hardy or Russell or whoever that is

[00:55:57] uh I can't even remember the bastard's name the Hardy yeah so amazing I loved how badass and strong she looked yeah yeah just her stance and her determination you know she reminded me of M

[00:56:14] from her yes exactly M she really did she did everybody's reminded me of M tonight yes I know uh I thought it was great and I yeah I love that I love the manner in which she did it

[00:56:31] oh right how how it's and it's great because like she thought of it but she didn't think it through well enough but Sacajawea then shows up to like back her up and be like no no no

[00:56:43] girl you're you're doing it all wrong you gotta like you know higher ups they're smart so you gotta you gotta think about that shit so plan this out with the fake you know this is like um Danny

[00:56:55] Torrance and the shining where he backs up at the very end to get his dad all confused she's doing the exact same thing by backing up but laying out these fucking you know big ass scary ostrich feet whatever the fuck these things are what are these like

[00:57:11] quahog feet not quahog excuse me that's a clam uh uh doll ho no doll hog goes our buddy Fezra are these like Fezra on Fezra I don't know they seem a lot bigger okay they do look pretty

[00:57:24] big are these uh vammatter feet I don't know maybe wait I'm not sure what they are but seeing that there are monsters a plenty I think plenty of the man you know like I think

[00:57:38] Sacajawea says you know might not fool Lewis and Clark which is fine I don't think they'll be too sad that Hardy's gone uh but you know it'll definitely fool okay and and for the record

[00:57:53] Irene fucks Hardy shit up she does dude his eyeball is hanging out she is to yeah exactly he is she knows is gone he is fucked up so um Hardy is gone she used a badass weapon

[00:58:12] Sacajawea is helping her and what the fuck is Maldenado up to now he seems to always be looking for a pair right mm-hmm so we had Lewis and Clark but now is he thinking

[00:58:28] Sacajawea and Irene maybe I don't know I wasn't quite sure what to think of him lurking around the trees there Sacajawea I love that you we see him when she says I would have killed him a long

[00:58:44] time ago like basically like no I'm cool with it but you just did sister we're gonna let's just clean this shit up and make sure you know I it seems like he's looking for willing accomplices

[00:58:55] or willing somebody willing to go in with this so um yeah what the fuck is Maldenado up to I love this final page it is remarkably evocative and exciting for me to know like where are they gonna

[00:59:13] go dug it mm very good a hint of maybe what's to come do you have any other thoughts I don't really I mean I I mean and I feel like we're going back over what we've already covered but

[00:59:28] I the whole I really like how it was depicted like um what Irene saw on the fog and the it just reminds me of like all the the kind of bad bad dreams or this one particular bad dream I had

[00:59:44] used to repetitive bad dream that I used to have as a kid but the of Hardy when he's huge and he's reaching out to to grab Irene and um I just I don't know that kind of image sort of brings

[01:00:00] back scary things to me and I really that one really kind of hit me hard but um that's mainly it I think all right um well one thing I wanted to mention was the variant cover and during our little short

[01:00:17] mail section you can take a look on your device and hopefully the variant cover will show up as the the image on your device it's the the walking dead tribute this month oh and I don't

[01:00:30] remember what it looked like sacaja wea sacaja wea is macho with two moss zombies on a chain well not a chain but a rope or whatever for her very cool cover um which is just awesome um I forget the

[01:00:46] name of uh who did that one let's see does this say on the oh it's matt roberts he did okay he did both of them yeah he did both of them right awesome it's really cool so definitely check that one out

[01:01:17] thing I was looking for translations are in the back it took me a really long time to read this issue I translated everything myself with my very very rusty french and a lot of help from google

[01:01:32] translate anyway I really enjoyed this issue like always I like that we got to see more of a character that we really don't know much about Irene I also like to revenge plan and how sacaja wea stepped
