Also on Wax Episodic:

We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted series:

  • Lanterns (HBO): The prestige TV-meets-comics, gritty, small-town crime show featuring galactic space cops. Covered by me, Kirk, and Jim.
  • Severance (Apple TV): A mind-bending show where office workers’ minds are severed into two selves, one that exists only at work, and the other only outside. It’s beautiful, brilliant, funny, gripping, mysterious, thrilling, thought-provoking, and meticulously crafted in every way. Hosted by Jason and Karen’s innies.
  • Fallout (Amazon): A crazy retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic melange of wholesomeness and depravity. One of the best looking shows on TV, funny as hell, violent AF (but in a cartoony way), with a great cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones). Not to be missed! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Kasi.
  • Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen.
  • IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, with Pennywise stalking the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elm Street-esque horror. Cohosted by Shawn of Strange Indeed.
  • Alien: Earth (FX): From the brilliant Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this one really scratches that sci-fi itch. A greedy corporate tech overlord transfers the consciousness of a group of terminally ill children into highly performant synth bodies. And the Xenomorph is in it, too. Also, Tim Olyphant! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Randy.

[00:00:00] Hmm? Ah! Hmm... On Cuts to Go! A home, home I'd say farewell to Ensign Trag He went to shore and met the hag

[00:00:27] With just one gash betrothed they be She followed him on land and sea For if you let her pierce your skin Betwixt her thighs Your final sin

[00:00:52] I don't understand. How do you die? She crawls into your bed and sits on your face.

[00:01:53] Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast. I'm Jason. And I'm Karen. And this is Wax Episodic. And this episode we're covering Widows Bay Season 1 Episode 3 The Inaugural Swim It's so fun! Do you like to swim in the ocean? I love it! With sea hags? I feel a certain kinship with sea hags. Okay, so you just be like, hey there! Hey there! Yeah, what's up girlfriend? I'm frequently damp.

[00:02:22] I am a runner, so I'm faster than you think an old lady should be. You're faster than you should be. And also sometimes I want to kill men by sitting on their faces. That's nice. I remember you did scratch me that one time. I wasn't sure. It was so I could track you like a bloodhound. What was going on? You know what's wild? I'm actually in your closet. I'm watching another show right now. David and I are watching another show called Below. That's based in Newfoundland, I think. Anyway, there's a sea hag in the show.

[00:02:51] So it's sea hags in the zeitgeist. I'm telling you. Yeah, exactly. I want to watch Popeye. Ah! I bet there's not a sea hag. No, there is. There's a sea hag in Popeye. Yeah. There's a bunch of colorful characters in Popeye. Nobody even knows who Popeye is probably. Okay, grandpa. Exactly. I wanted to mention, I want to make an appeal to you guys. So I've been podcasting for a long time because I'm an old grandpa.

[00:03:21] 16 years. And I still love it. And the one thing that's changed over the years though is the algorithm has been a real struggle lately. Like right now, for example, if you search Widows Bay in Apple Podcasts, our podcast is like eight rows down. And there aren't even eight Widows Bay podcasts. The heck? Are they bots? Are they AI? They're just like, well, you get a lot of episodes and podcasts.

[00:03:49] So you get other episodes before us. And you know, before, earlier, I could just put out podcasts and know that fans of the shows that we cover would go in and search for that show and find us. Now it's harder to get noticed. And, oh man, I hate it so much. But that means fewer downloads, which means less money coming in. And that's no good for me to keep podcasting.

[00:04:15] It's more pressure for me to find something else to do besides podcasting, at least to the degree that I'm doing it. So all that to say, if you are digging our show and you want it to keep going, you could help us out easily. Just go to the Widow's Bay Everything's Fine in Apple Podcasts. And if you search for it and look down like eight rows, you'll find it. And then follow the podcast if you aren't already.

[00:04:42] If you're listening on Wax Episodic and you haven't rated us there, it'd be great to rate us there too. But also go to the Widows Bay one because it's also a standalone podcast. Leave us a rating. And if you want bonus points, you could listen to an episode if you haven't already. And even leave us a review. I think we only have four or five ratings right now in the Widows Bay Everything's Fine podcast. One of those is from me. Did you give us five stars? Guess how many stars I gave us? Five stars, yeah.

[00:05:12] Five. So let's see if we can get 20 ratings by next week. Yes! That should be doable. Yes! I found if you set a goal for these things, people often rise to the occasion. So let's see. If you're genuinely enjoying the podcast and you feel inspired to also write a review, that'd be great. But ratings and follows are the mission. And I promise not to sit on your face. They're not going to do it now. Just kidding. Okay. Okay. Then I will sit on your face.

[00:05:42] Whatever you want. Whatever you want. All right. Listener meat up. No, just kidding. Okay. All that said, here we go with Widows Bay Season 1, Episode 3, The Inaugural Swim. Plot Summary. As tourists fill Widows Bay, Tom has a flirtation with a woman named Marissa who is in town for a bachelorette party. Or so she says. At night, Tom encounters an entity known as the sea hag who scratches him on the arm.

[00:06:07] Wick tells Tom that the sea hag scratches men to mark them as prey so she could track them down to kill them. After a date with Marissa, Tom fears that she's the sea hag and sends her away. But the real sea hag enters his house and is stopped when Wick arrives and shoots her. Meanwhile, Bryce finds a mysterious well in the woods. That's the reverend. Tom's son Evan and his friend befriend a pair of girls visiting from Boston who are shocked to learn Evan has never left the island.

[00:06:33] They suddenly see Bryce returning from the woods and he warns them that evil resides on the island. With no follow-up explanation. Yeah, he just shuffles up. Elsewhere, Sheriff, how do you say his name? Bashir? Bashir. Bashir. Bashir Clemens puts out a request for backup at Patricia's ongoing Sunset Cocktails party saying that the chaos has ensued. It's chaos, Tom! Help! Get down here!

[00:07:00] That's one of my favorite episodes, next week's episode. Yes. The cocktail party one. Yes. I love it so much. Yeah. But we're here to talk about this one, which I also liked. What did you think of this one? Oh, this is one of my favorites, maybe in my top two of the 10. Yeah, I loved this episode. It was so fun. It's funny and scary. It's great. Yep, yep. I think it's thematically deep too.

[00:07:30] I was thinking it might seem obvious, but it hit me that one of Tom's characteristics that they keep coming back to is that he's been a coward in his life. And he's trying to overcome that. Yeah. Like, you know, when he sat at his desk fiddling around after the old guy attacked him, even though he was late for dinner with the reporter. He's just, and Patricia's like, you're already late. Yes. I know. I know. I'm going.

[00:07:56] Or when the doorbell ditching thing that Wick mentioned where he would pretend to do it, but not really. His father calling him soft, all these things. And I think that's such a fun and great characteristic for the main character in a horror comedy with heart. Because the horror part gives him plenty to react to and be scared of and try to overcome. And that's funny. But we want to see him overcome it because it has heart, I think. Yes. Yes.

[00:08:24] And then even on a deeper level, I think it's not just like, oh, look at the coward trying to, you know, deal. But it's about, I think we're watching a story about a guy trying to overcome his fears and be a better person. And he doesn't always succeed, but he's trying. And this episode, to get around to this week's, is I think in part about the fear of connecting with someone new romantically after having lost his wife.

[00:08:48] Just like the fear of meeting women, getting back out there, being intimate, maybe having to deal with when things don't fit quite right or potential loss of freedom. And then just really moving on from his ex. You know, all these things that you have to do when you're a widower. Yeah. Yeah. And, of course, overall, again, he wants this place to be better for Evan. He wants the island to be.

[00:09:16] And at the beginning, you see tourists come and you think, he did it. You know, good review. Got a smile on his face. Tourists are arriving. It's going to be fun. And hey, and Evan is already, you know, romancing the young tourist, you know, hanging out with the tourists. So it's kind of working. His plan is working. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:09:43] He's set in motion a set of events that will inject money and into the economy so he can improve the island. So that's supposed to be for the inhabitants of the island, whether they actually want that or not. And make it more interesting for his son. So hopefully he'll stay out of trouble, which is kind of interesting because his son is grounded because he got in trouble before.

[00:10:06] And yet he's out hanging out with girls that are a result of his dad trying to make it more interesting. So maybe that's a success. But they're doing it against his dad's will and lighting up firecrackers. Right. Right. Exactly. So Tom might have mixed feelings about that, you know? Maybe he might just be like, oh, you're meeting girls. Hopefully he'd be a cool enough dad to be like, that's great.

[00:10:33] I'm glad you're having some enjoyment now in this place, you know? Yes. Don't light up firecrackers, though. Jeez. Please. Throw them in cars. Exactly. Exactly. And people like with Evan, he produces a reaction, I think, like, oh, what a fucking piece of shit. Right? I mean, he's laughing at his dad.

[00:11:02] He's lying to him all the time. He's sort of mocking him. And I think people get annoyed with him. I know some Lister comments have said that. And I get that totally. And as a dad, I'm like, you got to love him anyway. You got to love him through that. Yep. Yep. And that's what Tom does, you know? That phase is coming for you. It's coming. It's kind of here a little bit. Yeah. Not exactly the same, but. You're the son of two boys.

[00:11:31] All right. What else? What do you want to get into first? Okay. I really want to get into the opening. So in the opening scene, we see the crazy video that was, by the way, produced by Jerry Doyle, who is the historic society docent. It's that Jerry. And the film. She's really in charge of it, which makes sense for a small town. Yeah, it does.

[00:11:59] That she would have been like the person to produce the little video in the historic society. But the video is hilarious. It opens with a map that says, do not travel here, exclamation point. And a skull and crossbones. So there's the information you need. It says 1681, it was founded. That's around the time I think the Salem witch trials were about 10 years after that.

[00:12:26] It said, once an inhabited island, 42 nautical miles about, which is about 48 miles from the coast of colonial New England, came to be known as Widows Bay. Now home to over 3,000 residents, which is crazy because it seems like fewer than that. They're all hiding. Yeah, right, right. A town comprised of fishermen, families, and friends, all thanks to one man.

[00:12:51] Now, thanks for joining us for Richard Warren's journey from humble tradesman to the first Reeve prime and Lord Island protector. And office of the town now colloquially refers to as mayor. And then the narrator just sort of goes to the door to open it. It's locked. He just stands there facing the corner, which is crazy. Yeah, that reminded me of Blair Witch. Yeah, yeah.

[00:13:21] Yeah, the guy standing in the corner. Yeah. Sorry, spoiler alert. No, well. At some point in Blair Witch, a guy stands in a corner. Yes, exactly. Oh my God, we just revealed everything. Interesting. I looked up Reeve Prime because it's such a funny phrase. Old English words that refer to administrative officials. Still used in some places like in Canada. Isn't that interesting? Yeah, I've never heard that before.

[00:13:48] Yeah, Reeve Prime and Lord Island protector. Now known as mayor. Yeah, those kind of words you find more in like England where they still go by older terms. Crazy titles. Canada is part of the Commonwealth. It is part of the Commonwealth. So they still have some of those traditions. Yep. Yep. I just love that little video. And then, of course, they pan to today and show a statue of Richard Warren.

[00:14:16] And it has no head. Yeah. But weirdly. It's so funny. Weirdly no one. It reminded me of Ichabod Crane. No one comments on it. Where's his head? What happened to his head? Yeah, there's all the tourists looking. I felt like maybe one or two looked a bit concerned. But I couldn't read the plaque underneath it. Just I could see Richard Warren and there were some other words. Right. I don't know if it explained why. Right. Right. Right.

[00:14:41] I just love the old timey, crazy, low production value of video was, you know, rock bottom. And it was weird, just like I like it. So. Yeah. Not as weird as the welcome to the hotel video. Yes. But in that direction. That was banana pants. Yeah. Yeah. So. I.

[00:15:06] When I first watched through this show, I didn't notice that they keep coming back to founder Richard Warren. Yes. And. Just a little peek. You'll find out more about that later on. So it makes sense that they keep mentioning him. But they mentioned just a few things about this video. They keep talking about how the island was once uninhabited. But.

[00:15:32] I feel like it has some darker unknown past that. Yes. Unacknowledged. That. I think the teeth are actually going to end up being something. Yeah. You know, what about the teeth? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think we're going to get a story about that in a future season. Um, and they're connecting Richard Warren with Tom a little bit. Cause as you said that he was the first Reeve prime and Lord Island protector, an office,

[00:16:01] the town now colloquially refers to as mayor. So they're making a connection that Tom holds sort of the same position as Richard Warren in the community. And, um, then they show that like, well, like Tom, Richard Warren is a widow. He had a first wife, he's a widow. And now he has a second wife, Sarah. And there's this, uh, mannequin of Sarah Warren. Warren.

[00:16:31] And so I think that's on purpose. This little presentation invokes the idea of a second wife. And in this episode about Tom meeting a new woman that he's attracted to. Oh, that's interesting. Yeah. This little video connects to the episode, you know? Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, just a little couple of little things about that. Yeah. I didn't, that didn't occur to me, but you're absolutely right. Tom is also a widower and does, is not, um, doesn't get married in this episode.

[00:17:01] No, but he's thinking about getting back out there. Yeah, exactly. That leads to my first one. Tom makes a connection. So Tom sees this woman with a map looking lost offers to help says he's the mayor. My pictures in the brochure. I made that map. And then she points out that the map isn't the problem. It's a street signs. This one says Dick Hole Street. Who's your first guess as to who did that? Right. It's Evan, man. It's Evan, clearly.

[00:17:32] Somebody did that? So then Tom offers her a ride. Would you take that ride? Yeah. She does say, uh, please don't kill me. So. Please don't murder me. Please don't murder me. So that means that it definitely won't happen. Yeah. If you get your murderer to agree to it. They're not allowed to. Yeah. They're not allowed to. But I liked the way I liked the way that meeting went.

[00:18:00] She sort of doesn't really want to acknowledge him at first. And then she, he, he's persistent, but in a kind way. And then she, then he mentions, he, he sees that, Oh, you know, he's, she's not trusting me. And it's just acknowledging the reality of the world that I've been more and more aware of as in recent years, as women have been speaking out about how you're always afraid of men. Yeah.

[00:18:30] Always. But he points out, he wrote, he made the map she's holding his picture. He's the mayor. His picture's right in it. So that's like a quick way to engender trust, you know? Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Exactly. Little does she know, he's the serial killer mayor. And, and, and they get to know each other, have a funny little conversation about the island. And it was hilarious when he says to her in the car, um, where are you staying?

[00:19:00] And she's like, Oh, we're, we're at the end. And he's like, uh, uh, there's a clown there. He's great. No. Um, so she says she's there for a bachelor party and he immediately asked if she's getting bachelorette and he immediately asks if she's getting married. And so, you know, he's at least somewhat interested and she knows that too.

[00:19:28] And then after seeing the episode, you wonder, would he have offered her a ride? Otherwise I'd say 25% chance. Yes. So then he invites her to the inaugural swim. And when he did that, you know, she said she liked hanging out at the beach. Oh, you should come to the inaugural swim. Um, she, the actress, I think played it like, Oh, Oh, he's interested in me. She realized it.

[00:19:55] And then he mentioned the sunset cocktails after. So then that's like a real sign of interest. And then she hints, you know, Oh, we might be at the Barnabas Tavern tonight. Cause all this stuff he's talking about us tomorrow. And so now you can see the, the actors are so good. You can just see both of them kind of beaming a little bit cause they both realize, Oh, I'm actually kind of interested in this person. And you just have that feeling, you know, that we've all, hopefully we've all experienced. Yeah. It's like, Oh wow, this is cool. This is fun.

[00:20:25] Uh, then Tom's at home checking himself out in the mirror, making sure he still looks good. Practicing his expression. Ooh, how about this way? And then, and then he goes to the bar, but she's not there and he's disappointed. And then, um, they meet later. I'm just kind of going through their whole interaction. Yeah. She blows them off. They meet. Yeah. I mean, she said we might be there. Yeah. That's true.

[00:20:51] And, and I think probably she didn't even think he was going to show up, you know? True too. But then she keeps checking in on him, like calling his place of work, which is a waste of time. You've learned if you're at widow's bed, he's not there, he's not going to get the message. And if he does get the message, then, uh, Ruth will tell him that Mercer called, which I thought was so funny. Mercer. And then, so he meets her at the Driftwood diner and it was really nice for the song More Than This is playing,

[00:21:21] which always reminds me of Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson doing karaoke in Lost in Translation. I just love that song. And then we find out that Tom's wife died during complications from childbirth. We didn't know that before, right? I don't think. I don't think we did. So that's really tragic. And that's good information. Of Evan, like Evan never knew his mother.

[00:21:44] And I would guess, I don't know for sure, but that Tom maybe hasn't even dated since then for 16 years. It doesn't seem like it anyway. He seems like a committed bachelor. He seems like he's not very good at it. Well, I don't know. I guess I should give him a little more credit. But then the moment got weird because he's like, oh, I got to go. I got to go to this Sunset Cocktails thing. She's like, whoa, do you have to go? Yeah.

[00:22:14] Or what did he say? My co-worker's going to flip out. I forget exactly. Yeah, something like that. Patricia's going to be mad. And then she's like, well, or he goes, do you want to come with me? And she goes, can we go somewhere else together alone? Like maybe your place. And that's where it's like, dude, he just told you he has to go to this thing or it's going to piss off his co-worker. And then invited you to go with him. And now you're like, can we go to your house?

[00:22:42] And it's like, why don't you see how the night goes? You know, maybe you would end up at his house. And then she apologizes in a weird way. Is that weird? I'm sorry. I'm sorry. And I really just think all of that was because we're supposed to think it's odd. So we'll suspect that she's the sea hag. Yes. When really she's just a human being who's a little weird sometimes like we all are, you know? Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:23:04] I also think that the sea hag scratch and bite is starting to set in. So I think that's one of the reasons why he turns her down is because he's starting to feel the effects of the sea hag. I don't know. Wow. Wild speculation. I thought it really did turn him off.

[00:23:25] Because it really felt like one of those times when you're really jibing with someone and then something happens where you... I mean, if it was a woman, if the genders were reversed, then a woman would say it like, oh, I got the ick. He did something and it made me get the ick. Like, that's kind of how I felt about her just all of a sudden being really forward like that when it felt like the pace was off, you know?

[00:23:53] And I think whether he thought in the moment, wait, she might be the sea hag or not. I just think it threw him off. And the way he delivered that line, tonight's not the best. To me, that was more like, no, I told you it wasn't going to work out. And I don't like the way you responded. Yeah. And did you think right away that she was a sea hag? Yes. I mean, I suspected, right? I was afraid of that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:24:22] We've all... We've now seen the sea hag twice. We know that she's crafty. Yeah. And so now our radar is up. Where is she going to pop up next? Yeah. And that was delicious. And this woman, she had kind of long hair too, right? Kind of like the sea hag. Uh-huh. So it was a fun thing of just like him sort of wondering, like you're sort of falling for... Because I thought she was very charming, right? And then all of a sudden you go, oh, wait, I don't know if I can trust you. Like we've all had...

[00:24:51] I think we've all had that feeling about people too, where you feel like someone's great and then they do something and you're like, oh man, that took me off guard. I don't know about this person suddenly. But you're not necessarily thinking they're a sea hag, but you know, it's a similar feeling. Well, that's how we sea hags operate. That's how we get to... Some sea hags are all right. Well, you know, I have my moments. All right. What's the next? What do you want to go on to next?

[00:25:18] I thought this was also incredibly funny episode. There's so many funny things in this episode. I'll just say just a couple of my favorite lines. I loved it when Ruth was giving the message to Tom that Marissa had called, except she pronounced it Marissa, like the hard to cure staph infection. I thought that was hilarious.

[00:25:41] And I also thought that Tom's interaction with Sheriff Clemens when he reports the sea hag and the best part is you see the notepad that Sheriff Clemens is using and he writes down, old woman, possibly damp, faster than an old woman should be. I like that because it came right in the middle of the conversation.

[00:26:09] You just heard Tom say, are you taking these notes? Are you getting these notes down? And then you... And then I also love with Sheriff Clemens later on in that same conversation, he says, you should set up a perimeter around the island. And the sheriff says, the island has a perimeter. It's called the ocean. Which, yeah. Yeah, exactly. Exactly.

[00:26:37] So there's just, there's so many funny things in this episode. I just thought that all the humor was just clicking the entire time. Yeah. It was great. It was written by Neil Casey, who is the same person who plays Kurt the innkeeper. He wrote the episode. No kidding. Yeah. Oh, fantastic. Fantastic. Yeah.

[00:27:04] I liked when Dale, the, we got to figure out what his job is so I know how to refer to him. He's the guy that was on Pluribus too, in the bicycle. Oh, yeah. He is like an admin there. Yeah. I'm not sure what he does. Well, some of the cash businesses downtown are balking at the idea of a city sales tax. They said, actually, they said, if you want this blood money, you got to come and get it yourself, which felt threatening.

[00:27:34] And I looked up, I read that blood money, cause I didn't know exactly what it meant. It's money obtained through violence, killing or other morally reprehensible activities. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So that's what they see as, as taxes. Hilarious. I wrote, I just wrote Kathy is the worst as another funny thing. Oh, she's the worst. She's the worst. And I thought it was funny that Wick told, casually told Tom, just lock yourself in a chest for 72 hours. Yeah.

[00:28:04] Until you're wooed. From the inside. Yes. Amazing. Amazing. Yeah. Yeah. In that same conversation with Wick, Wick sings the sea shanty that tells Tom about, you know, the description of the sea hag. And then Tom's like, I don't understand. How do you die?

[00:28:32] And Wick says, she crawls into your bed and sits on your face. Perfect. That's so funny. Perfect. Yeah. Okay. So I want to talk about that exchange between Tom and Patricia. It was right after he offered this woman a ride and then he's at his morning meeting. And here I'm going to play the exchange instead of just reading it to you guys. Hey, are we getting the word out about the sunset cocktails?

[00:29:02] I just feel like no one knows about it. I have personally been spreading the word and Rosemary's been passing out flyers all morning. Yeah, I think she's just been smoking outside. You really need to stay on top of this because I spoke to a woman, hadn't heard about any of it. What woman? Just a woman. Where did you speak to her? In my car. I don't understand. Well, she was lost so I offered her a ride because it seemed like the right thing to do. Of course. Excuse me.

[00:29:32] That's fine. Anyway, let's just make sure every accommodation has all the info. Restaurants too. And oh, I also want to talk about music. What music we're going to play when I walk from the platform to the ocean for the swim because I don't want that to be awkward. Was she attractive? I didn't notice one way or the other. How old is she? She was age appropriate. What an odd way to describe someone here just giving a ride.

[00:29:59] Well, Patricia, as mayor, the safety of the residents of and visitors to our seaside village is my top priority. So if a woman is stranded and needs my help, yes, I'm going to offer it. Okay, so what is the age cut off? Because you once saw me with a flat tire and you kept on driving. No, I didn't see you. Ruth doesn't even have a car. She walks to work. Well, I thought she enjoyed the exercise. Hey, Ruth, may I offer you a ride tonight? Oh, no. Thank you. Yeah.

[00:30:29] It's the mornings that are hard. When he keeps not giving her a ride. Oh, my God. It's so good. It's so good. That's one of the better interactions of the show, I feel like. But what do you think was going on there with Patricia? Patricia. Oh, I think she just loves, you know, she smells like that something.

[00:30:56] She probably has sniffed out that Tom already is like offering a ride to pretty tourists rather than. You think this is a habit? I don't think so. Zooming past her as she has a flat tire. Yeah. And he quote unquote didn't see her. I actually think the fact that he didn't give her a ride was crucial to that whole exchange. Because when I first saw this, you know, she's like, was she attractive?

[00:31:24] And I thought, does Patricia have a thing for Tom? And is she jealous? But I don't think so at all. I don't either. We've gotten only clues, but it seems like her ex-husband ended up hitting on younger women or something or ended up with a younger woman or something. Do you think she has an ex-husband? Yeah, there was something about an ex-husband at some point in there. And, you know, that's why she's sensitive about her age and she says she's biologically 28.

[00:31:53] And then later when someone says or Tom says something about an elderly woman, I tried to give a ride to an elderly woman or something. She goes, was she 40? And so it's more about her own. It's about I hate to I don't mean to sound judgmental, but it's somewhat about her own insecurities. But she's.

[00:32:21] Hyper vigilant about men in her life mistreating women, especially the way she was mistreated, but other ways to, you know, like how she didn't want him to assume that this writer was a man of the New York thing. So I just think that's that's what it's all about. I think so, too. But it's funny as hell. And it makes him feel ashamed because then he offers the Sea Hager ride at night. I think he wouldn't have done that if it wasn't for this exchange. Right. Excuse me.

[00:32:51] Do you need a ride? Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Oh, Tom. Clearly, she doesn't want to ride. So, yeah. Anyway, I love that. Yeah. There were so many great things. One last thing. Well, there's a million others, but I'm going to one last thing I want to say is at the inaugural beach swim, he says, I officially open the ocean.

[00:33:22] That's a funny way to put it. Yeah. These little like ceremonial things are kind of funny. And I feel like that's more of a East Coast thing, too, or Midwest, but not so much. Yes. On the California side. Yes. Quaint, you know. Oh, we love our traditions here in New England. Yep. Exactly. All right. What else do you want to talk about? Let's talk about the Sea Hag. Yeah.

[00:33:51] For a few minutes. So, the Sea Hag, initially we see her when Tom offers her a ride and she is faster than you'd think. He screeches out of there when she starts running up to the car. He screeches. I like how she moved in a creepy, like shambling and clumsily. And she kind of had this raspy breathing. I looked up the actress.

[00:34:21] The actress is actually pretty. They just do. They do that a lot. Yeah. They just do crazy makeup. One of the best of the zombies I ever saw when I was on the set of The Walking Dead was this beautiful blonde woman who got a super, super ugly treatment. It was quite a striking transformation. It was cool. I think both of us got the ugly stick, too. And it was delightful. They didn't even put makeup on us either.

[00:34:50] They just say, you're ready. You're camera ready, zombie. Just go out there. No, they did all kinds of fun tricks to make you super ugly, including putting this black dye in your mouth so that when you smile, your gums are all black. They didn't have to do that for me either. No. Yeah. You need to go to the dentist. Okay. So then we see her.

[00:35:14] She scratches his arm and it bleeds and it bleeds and it kind of keeps bleeding throughout the episode. It's not healing the way you think it would. And that's kind of a tell. Well, then he goes, he wants to go into the ocean to open the ocean to do the inaugural swim. And he does. She pops up as if she's like a sea creature or some kelp.

[00:35:42] And then she goes back under and then it's like Jaws a little bit. It is very much so. It's very much a call back to Jaws. We see his legs as he's thrashing to get away and she's able to claw his calf. And then we see him struggling and thrashing and they pan out and he's in like a foot of water. Yeah.

[00:36:11] Splashing around. It kind of reminded me of when he freaked out and went, there's something in the fog. Right. Exactly. Exactly. But we see from his perspective, it was crazy. The fog was crazy and the sea hag was there. Yeah. You know, the sea hag was there, but it does look hilarious. He's got something to be afraid of. Yeah. He described the inaugural swim to Marissa as it's just one of those island traditions. The mayor swims in the ocean every year to show that it's safe from the island's history

[00:36:41] of ocean dangers. And when he flipped out like that, I'm like, did you prove that the waters were safe from the dangers of the sea? No. No. Is it ethical to not mention anything about it to the people? No. No. No. No. He does report it. He reports it to Bashir. Actually, I don't think he reports the sea part to Bashir.

[00:37:09] No, I don't think he did, but he had already said something before. At that part, at that moment, and Rosemary has also talked to Tom about the sea hag. And at first he's like, please don't settle in, Rosemary, whatever weird tell you're about to tell me. And she says to him, story goes. That's so good. And she tells him about the sea hag. He doesn't believe it. Then he goes into the ocean.

[00:37:39] He gets, he sees the sea hag. He gets attacked. The sea hag gets his calf muscle. And then he goes to Wick and asks Wick about the sea hag. He gets Wick singing the sea shanty about the hag. And Wick tells him, this is how she kills you. She crawls in your bed. It's in your face. And he's like, oh, why did I let you in my head again? But he definitely now is afraid.

[00:38:06] And he definitely now knows something's going on. So. Yes. Just the fact that he went to Wick. And it's interesting to me when you first watch this show. And more and more in podcasting, maybe I've been doing this all the time. But I talk about how we tend to respond to people's vibe versus looking closely at their words and their actions. And if you do that with this show, you might think Wick is just a crazy old kook. But he's not.

[00:38:36] He's absolutely right. And what he's saying makes a lot of sense. Like we shouldn't be bringing people here. We should be taking care of this, whatever it is, and trying to survive. And when Tom goes to him, it sort of is an indication that he's like, okay, maybe Wick has a point here. And then Wick says the legend of the sea hag and everything. And then only when he says, and then she sits on your face, does Tom go, oh, why do I even come here? You know?

[00:39:05] And I just think it's kind of funny that he's open to the idea that Wick is right about the horrors of the island. But when it turns into comedy, that's when he can't accept it anymore. And this is like comedy horror. So he hasn't accepted the comedy part yet, I guess. Right, right, right, right. But I think he is about 80% there, I think. I think he doesn't want to believe it, but he's now starting to believe it. Yeah, there's...

[00:39:34] And he's starting to feel that he's getting more and more fatigued. And it's maybe setting in. He goes home after he has his dinner with Marissa. And goes, picks up the baseball bat, sits in the reclining chair, and waits. And... Go ahead. Yeah, let me just go over some of that stuff that you mentioned. First, when she's...

[00:40:02] He first meets the sea hag out in the night, and then when she comes to his house, it's scary. And I was... I am impressed that this show does scary so well, since it's a comedy. And I was trying to figure out how they figured out how to so effectively make the show creepy and scary. And I wanted to see if the creators had any horror experience. Yeah. And I found that...

[00:40:29] I guess I already knew this, but I forgot that Katie Dippold, who created the show, she's a showrunner. She wrote the screenplay for the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot. You know? I didn't see it. With the women Ghostbusters. Yeah, I didn't see it. It was funny. I liked it. It was funny, and it had some scary moments. You know? I think Widow's Bay is actually scarier, but... But Hero Mirai directed the first three episodes, the three that we've seen so far. Yeah.

[00:40:57] And I read that he's also directed episodes of Atlanta and Barry, and I've never seen either one of those, but I hear they're both great. And there's an episode of Atlanta called Teddy Perkins, which I read is one of the creepiest episodes of TV ever. Oh! So that makes me want to see it, right? Oh! And Station Eleven, he did some of that too.

[00:41:19] But apparently he has a talent for making ordinary situations feel like subtly wrong and then building the unease into something disturbing. I'm writing that down. Teddy Perkins. And his work blends absurdist comedy with genuinely unsettling horror. So they picked a good one. Yeah. Have you seen Barry? I'm curious about that one too. No! I meant to. I meant to. There's a lot of TV. I know. There's so much.

[00:41:48] And then the inaugural swim. So when Thomas first swimming out to the buoy or whatever it is, I liked that the music was heartfelt at first. And it felt not just there for something to go bad with, you know, like, oh, we're presenting this as something nice for contrast because it's about to go wrong. I think it was that, but it just felt kind of genuine too. Like, I think the show does have heart and it was like, oh, this is a nice moment.

[00:42:17] You know, when the nice moments happen, you really feel it. So it did turn bad, but I don't know. Yeah. Pretty quick. Pretty quick. But if you watch that again, you'll see, you'll hear like it's swelling and it just feels good for him to be doing something that's sort of the tourists are here. We're doing our tradition and things are going well, but then it goes bad.

[00:42:41] But, um, and then I think maybe the inaugural swim is, I wonder if it's a metaphor for Tom, like about to dip his toe in the waters of dating again, seeing if it's safe. And it's, it's not, it doesn't feel safe. Something like that. Yeah. Yeah. And then I had a whole thing about Tom consulting wick before we get to it.

[00:43:05] You were about to go into the, um, when the sea hag actually gets to his house, but no, let's, let's do Tom and wick. So Tom goes to him to ask him and, um, the, and then when wick sings the sea hag song to him, it was really funny when he was making those guttural noises. This is first. Oh, that's right. I'd say for world ends and drag. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:43:32] So related to that, uh, Rachel wrote in and said, Oh my God, I was looking for an interview with Matthew Reese because I wanted to hear his real accent. And I came across this gem. She had a link for a YouTube video. It turns out his real accent actually sounds fake to me. Also, I learned that scene where Steven root sings the sea shanty to him was the first scene they ever filmed together. Very funny stuff about that in the video. Highly recommend giving it a watch. So I'm just going to play that one part.

[00:44:02] It's Matthew Reese with Steven root. They asked them what memories did you have about your first day of filming? And here's how they answered. Our first day. I will never forget. Because Steven root, I obviously heard that's Matthew. And I knew he was going to sing a sea shanty to me. But no one had told me that the sea shanty began with. Oh, oh. So during the first rehearsal, that was the first thing that came out of his mouth.

[00:44:31] And I was, I feared for his life. It was so fun. We had such a wonderful time. And that was the first scene that we actually shot in the show. Yes. And the oh has stayed with us all. Oh. And will forever. Forever. Forever. It's nice. It's great. That's great. I love the sea shanty too. Mm-hmm. And I was thinking about how the sea hag.

[00:45:00] Well, this episode is kind of in the same tradition as other horror stories where some supernatural entity singles someone out and then pursues them relentlessly according to some mysterious rules. So, for example, it follows. Do you see that? Yeah. 2014. It's about a curse passed through sex that causes this entity to pursue the last person that caught it.

[00:45:28] And then if they kill them, then they go to the one before that. Spoiler alert. It's a metaphor for sexually transmitted diseases. Yeah. So, the idea, though, is you sleep with someone and you tell them to sleep with a bunch of people. Please. Please. So, then, The Ring. Anyone who watches a mysterious videotape receives a phone call telling them they'll die in seven days unless they can find a way to break the curse. Drag me to hell.

[00:45:52] A bank employee refuses an elderly woman's request for a loan extension and is cursed by her, leaving her three days to escape a demon that will drag her to hell. And there's others. Smile. The Invisible Man. The 2020 Elizabeth Moss version. Yeah. Loved that. Me too. Loved that. Final Destination. And then Widow's Bay. A supernatural old woman stalks lonely sailors, scratching them to collect their skin under her fingernails so she can track them wherever they go. She waits until they're alone and vulnerable, then crawls into their beds and suffocates them by sitting on their faces.

[00:46:25] Yep. It's never not funny. So, that would be a good Deadite thing to say. I'll sit on your face. Sit on your face. Okay. So, Seahag visits Tom. Seahag visits Tom.

[00:46:45] And we get, I think, one of the funniest parts of this entire series where he is horrified, but he is pretty incapacitated at this point. And he is in his Lazy Boy recliner. And the Seahag is down between his thighs. And we see her head sort of move up. And she goes, ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.

[00:47:13] Echigah, climbs up, slowly climbs up and goes to sit on his face. And his arm sort of, you see his hand sort of reach back. And then it is so delightful. Reclines to the easy chair. She goes flying behind, flips her off, and then he kind of flops out and does this flop down onto his stomach and army crawls to the bathtub.

[00:47:42] It is just delightful, that entire interaction. Yeah, and then Wick comes in and saves him. Saves the day. Yeah. Like, I'm telling you, he's the man. And she becomes, I think, seawater? Yeah, it looked like a bunch of grimy mud. Yeah, maybe it was just sea detritus or something. Sea, sea hag. She just, yeah, sort of almost evaporated, it felt like. And I wonder if, according to the legend, what does that mean?

[00:48:10] Is it over or will she come back next year or something? I think it's over. I think Wick's the day of the day. I think she'll be back the next time this cycle happens, whatever it is. Are you kind of in love with the sea hag? It's not that easy to get rid of my sea hag. I get it. I get it. But before that, when, so Tom turned Marissa down at the driftwood.

[00:48:38] And to me, it felt like, like I said, that was more about the interaction just went wrong versus, oh, I think she's the sea hag. At least the way Matthew Rhys played it. But then he kept looking at his wound. Like you said, it just kept seeming like it got worse. And I think he started thinking, oh, the sea hag's going to be looking after me. And then I started thinking, or he started suspecting that she was the sea hag. And then you hear the knocking.

[00:49:05] That's always freaky when you're in a horror movie. And then it's her. And I was freaked out by that. Well, it's fine. Like, I was like, what will you see if you open the door right now? Would it be the sea hag? Did you think it was, she was the sea hag at that point? I did. Yeah, I did. I was like, I was like, don't open the door, Tom. It's creepy. Also, she's being very forward. She gets his address. She took shots. Yeah. She's getting his address from one of his coworkers.

[00:49:35] So he didn't give her his address. He said, I got, he's like, how did you find me? And she said, I got your address from one of your coworkers. What? How? How? It's, it's late at night and you went to the, you went to city hall. What? How did you find, like, did you run into a coworker? But she did though. She did. Yeah. Yeah. So she, it's a small town and she must've, it sounds suspicious, but it could be true. Very suspect.

[00:50:04] Also, she's being very forward. He, I would never have done that. Um, yeah. And, uh, especially. Well, she's on vacation. So I, yeah, yeah, I guess so. But, um, and then later, of course, if you, um, keep watching, you can see her go to her and he's like, I've never seen your friends. I know who you are. Yeah. Confirmed, sir. I know who you are. He's probably like, what? I know what you are. He said. Oh, I know what you are.

[00:50:34] I know what you are. Like, you never want to hear that. No, you really don't. And then he looks at the people and sees nothing there, but I, they could have had it be that she was the sea hag or that you weren't sure, but they decided to show that seems pretty clear. She wasn't. Right. So it just turns out that I kind of liked that at first she was distrustful of him, but then when she decided she liked him, she got a bit obsessed, you know, and that's normal.

[00:51:04] I mean, I don't know if that's normal, but it's very, it's human behavior. It's people do that sometimes. Have you ever had a scary chick do that to you? Yeah. I had a, I had a, a woman move to my town because we had a hookup when I was visiting Boston. Then she moved to my town and I was like, Oh my God. Oh, wow. Wow. It's not exactly crazy. You're knocking at my door.

[00:51:33] It's not exactly crazy ex girlfriend, but it's not far. Yeah. Uh, so anyway, it, it was human, human behavior. Um, but, but I liked that it also could be suspicious. It was just perfect in my opinion to get us to think she was the sea hag. And then, like I said, they could have had her turn out to be the sea hag and they didn't. And I was kind of wondering why. And I think it's because they wanted to be Tom's fear that did him in not the actual

[00:52:03] horrors of the Island, you know, like he, he didn't have a connection with this woman because he was afraid of something that actually wasn't true. So it's just more interesting to me to have that not work out because of an irrational fear. Cause that's what he's dealing with, you know? Yeah. I mean, there's, it's really interesting cause there's fear. There's very rational fears of the horrors of the Island, but I don't know.

[00:52:32] I just think it's also all mixed up with his, um, difficulty moving on from his wife. And that's just more interesting to me. Yeah. Yeah. Great. And then, I mean, it was interesting too, that when he fell asleep on the chair, he, his wife served him a drink first. Was that just like a dream or something? I think so. I think so. Or maybe thinking about her. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, that could also have, yeah, I think so.

[00:53:00] I think that was meant to be a dream. Yeah. Yeah. But we don't know for sure. It might not. Because you also wonder if it was the sea hag taking her shape for some reason, but I don't know if that makes sense. Yeah. Agreed. Agreed. Okay. What else? Uh, Reverend Bryce. Yeah. So he, he's not in it much, but he's in it in a significant way.

[00:53:22] So we see him running into the woods and, um, he looks into this old well, I guess. And, uh, and it's darkness. And then later we see Evan and his friends and he stumbles out of the woods and he says to Evan and his friends, there is great evil here. And then staggers away as he's sort of dragging, uh, vines by his feet, which is sort of funny

[00:53:52] if you look closely. Looking very shaken. Yeah. Looking very shaken. Um, later on, he leaves a message on Tom's answering machine. He tells Tom that he said, I heard it. And he says, I'm sorry. I hope God forgives me one day. And. That's intriguing. That is intriguing. But we don't know what it means. And at least I wonder if listeners have any idea what that means. If you are watching for the first time and you feel like you understand that at all, let us know. I'm curious.

[00:54:22] Yeah. Well, right now, all we know is the Reverend was freaked out by hearing that bell ringing, even though he tied it up. And that seems to have led him to check this well. And he doesn't like what he found there. Nope. He does not. And we also know that something bad happened at the beach cocktail party. Um, Sheriff Clemens. Uh, we hear Wicks truck.

[00:54:47] I guess Wicks has a truck police scanner and we can hear Sheriff Clemens saying, uh, all hands, all available fire and rescue responders to the cocktail party, the beach cocktail party. So something bad is going on. He said rescue station one. This is Sheriff Clemens, all available fire and rescue Patricia's cocktails. I don't know what the fuck is going on. That's so great. Like I said, that's one of my favorite episodes. Looking forward to it.

[00:55:51] Okay. A little bit of news. Uh, yeah, I debated whether to include this, but I think it's funny. So you mentioned, we've mentioned before that Carrie Russell and Matthew Reese starred together on the Americans, which is this really well done spy drama on FX back in the 2010s. One of the best shows ever, apparently. Yep. Uh, and I didn't realize until recently that they became a couple. They did met on that show, became a couple. They're still together. They have a son who was born in 2016.

[00:56:21] He's not allowed to leave the Island. No, just kidding. Um, but Carrie Russell was on Chelsea Handler's podcast called Dear Chelsea recently. And she said, we were falling in love and staying up all night and having sex all the time and just wearing disguises. Like I'm fucking in crazy wigs and wearing pearls. Pearls, what have you ever worn pearls and been fucking in trailers and fucking everywhere? I mean, it was insanity. It was so fun and sneaky and sexy and so good. Wow. That's funny.

[00:56:49] I wonder if any producers of the Americans heard that. Oh God. I mean, I guess they're running their lines again. Their door is locked. Yeah. They, she really doesn't have a filter. She's really just telling it like it is. Good for her. I need to hear that. I, I'm curious. I've only read it. It's funny. Good for Carrie Russell. All right. Time for listener feedback. Madavi says, I know what you are. Poor Marissa. LOL.

[00:57:17] At the time I remember thinking how clever he was to suspect her. Carrie Ann Gergich, Gergich writes, I can't believe the things I didn't notice the first time around. Patricia's obsession with the age of the women men are dating is one of them. Yeah, I completely agree. So many details. Marlene Besnoff Leip said, was just listening to episode two on my walk. It was dark and I was a little creeped out between the Halloween decorations and the podcast, but didn't want to miss it.

[00:57:47] No reason to be creeped out. Why are you creeped out? Just don't look behind you. You'll be fine. Megan O'Connell writes, this one really creeped me out. The hag scared the crap out of me. Side note. Did you see the silly new Netflix show below? Oh, there's a hag character in there too. And she also scared me too. Yes, Megan. Yes, I did.

[00:58:16] I remember I was watching this episode in my room in the dark on my phone with my headphones on because my significant other was sleeping. I was looking around and laughing out loud hard because I was terrified and needed to laugh so as not to freak out. Also, the show is hilarious too. That's great. So it's good? Below? Mm-hmm. Yes. Yes. Below is good. It is not funny.

[00:58:42] I think the rest of her comment is referring to Widow's Bay because Below is not funny. It is a straightforward show on Netflix. It's good. Yeah. I mean, we're about four episodes in and full disclosure, halfway through episode four, I did fall asleep. But I think that's more about being incredibly tired. All right.

[00:59:08] D.D. Bergeron says, okay, so many moments of yelling at the TV, like watching a teenage babysitter decide to wash her pants in an outdoor laundry room and wander around in her underwear. I see you, Halloween. And I'm screaming, don't open the door, put on your pants. But here I am shouting, roll up your window, lock your doors, listen to your answering machine. Lock these doors too. Don't answer. Don't sit down. That's the mark of a good horror movie. Yes. Also, the water thing.

[00:59:38] And I prefer the ocean or lake to the pool. But I can always creep myself out imagining what is underneath. Yeah, that's me too. I could totally feel poor Tom's tear. Also, funniest moment on TV this year was the recliner hag punt. That's good. Yeah. The recliner hag punt. It's perfect. Megan Dively Layman says, roll up your window, roll up your window, roll up your window, Tom.

[01:00:08] Swim faster, Tom. She's yelling at the TV too. That sea hag actress was a master of physical movement. I'm guessing maybe a trained contortionist. I rarely cheer louder for a TV show than when Wick came in with the harpoon shot. Oh, the harpoon was also just, I love that he harpooned. Poor Marissa will be in therapy after Tom rejected her. Eh, she'll be fine. I think the island needs Tom as the ceremonial leader to carry out its dark purpose.

[01:00:38] So why did it almost kill him? It could have easily killed him through the ghost clown last episode, but it did not. It took him from the crawl space back to his bed somehow. So I thought he was to be warned and terrorized, but protected. This one with the near death by the sea hag left me confused. Yeah, that's a good question.

[01:01:02] Maybe the sea hag is different than, and maybe the sea hag is not on the same page as whatever greater thing is happening with the island. Maybe the sea hag is- Yeah, maybe there's monsters with different motivations. Yeah, I think so. I think so. Yeah. Chris says, first off, thank you. Love your new take on Widow's Bay. I've consumed all the others that spun off the last episode this summer. Glad to have you diving in. Thanks, Chris.

[01:01:29] My name is Chris Salin, co-host of the Borgo Pass Horror Podcast. I checked out their podcast. It's about all these obscure old horror movies, so it's pretty cool. Oh, very cool. A bunch I hadn't heard of. I've watched Widow's Bay season one probably six or seven times over, and I'm so smitten by this series. One observation from episode two that I took notice of on first watch, which was clear indication that William was manifesting everything Tom wants to hear.

[01:01:58] That's the guy he met in the hotel that turned out to be a killer clown. Was manifesting everything Tom wants to hear and was the island fucking with him. And that I have yet to hear anyone allude to is the fact that when they both go down to the parlor, William says, so tell me again about the camera. And Tom responds exasperated, I don't want to get into it. They make a concerted effort to let us hear that and never revisit the explanation, at least on camera.

[01:02:24] So wait, what was it about the camera that he wanted to know? Oh, he wanted the camera meant that Tom was there having to film himself to prove to the people that he could stay the night in the haunted hotel. And it was all fine. Everything's fine. They make a concerted effort to let us hear that. To let us hear that and never revisit the explanation, at least on camera.

[01:02:51] So that later in the evening when William gives him the pep talk about all the monsters, I immediately said to myself, Tom never laid it all out to him. William was and is in his mind. Brilliant way for the writers to lay this out by giving us a tangible insight. I've not heard this specific point addressed in the various takes and debates as to whether or not this is real. So anyway, keep it up. Great job. And we're lucky to have this wonderful show organically gaining a tribe piece. Thanks.

[01:03:16] I mean, I just presumed that because they kind of did a little bit of a montage thing there where Tom was loosening up more and more. So I thought maybe he told him in between the takes, but you might have a point there too. He just knew some things he shouldn't have known. Chris, I, I completely agree with you. Um, and my first take after seeing that episode, and I said this to David, I said to David, um, so William wasn't real. William was just in his head. And David said, no, no, no.

[01:03:46] William was a ghost. Um, William was the island. And, and that's, and afterwards I was like, okay, usually David gets these things correct. So clearly I'm wrong that it wasn't something that, that, um, came just out of Tom's head. Um, that William was real and it was a real ghost.

[01:04:07] Um, but I first, the first time I watched it, I agree with Chris that, that, um, William was just made up whole cloth inside of Tom's head and that Tom was just talking to himself the whole time. I think, well, I think it could be a combination because it really, as we were saying on the podcast seemed tailored to Tom. Yeah. And the time thing that happened to the innkeeper guy didn't happen to Tom.

[01:04:34] So it felt like the hotel or whatever force was tailoring things to Tom. Right. So I feel like a ghost could still be involved with that interpretation. And yet still it was somehow geared towards Tom and knew his thoughts and his life and everything too. Yeah. Because it's supernatural. So anything goes. Yeah. Anything goes. Exactly. Exactly. Uh, this last one comes from Rachel Teal Edwards, who writes, this episode is my favorite.

[01:05:02] I think top two, maybe this is peak funny and peak scary. And it's absolute perfection. The scene where the hag is in his living room, climbing up onto his face was so scary and made me laugh so hard. I remember turning to my husband and saying, this show is genius. That right there is why. Oh my gosh. We were absolutely convinced Marissa was the hag until she walked back out to the cab saying, she was humiliated. Oh, poor Tom. Poor Tom. Fucking terrible timing.

[01:05:30] More importantly, though, I love the turning point of this episode with Tom and Wick starting to come together instead of being so at odds. It makes for a much more interesting and entertaining dynamic. I agree. Evan is such a punk ass. Just a very unlikable teenager. And Tom is so gullible. So this is a sleepover party. But also he's grounded, but you're never home.

[01:05:57] So obviously he's not going to stay around and stay grounded. I don't know. There may be more said about his parenting and their relationship, but I'm here to be entertained, not to therapize. Ugh, I hate what's happening to Reverend Bryce. So mysterious and creepy. What's happening with him right now. Christian education for the day. A priest is always a reverend, but a reverend is not always a priest. Huh.

[01:06:25] Since they don't call him Father Bryce, he's probably not a priest and the caller is mostly for dramatic effect, which is perfect for the vibe of this show. Anywho, one last question. I don't understand. How do you die? It's so funny. So that's interesting. Wait, I don't get that. How do you die? Where does that come from? Uh, Tom asks, bright, uh, Tom asks wick. So I don't understand. After the sea shanty. How do you die? Yeah. Crossing your bed.

[01:06:52] No, but I read Rachel that reverends of other denominations besides Catholic also can wear the collar too. So, um, that doesn't contradict anything she said, except that it might just be for dramatic effect. No, I think it can be accurate that non-priests wear collars too. Fascinating. Fascinating. Fascinating. Fascinating. Uh, as I have very little experience with all this stuff, but I like it all.

[01:07:22] And she said about Evan being a punk ass and I, I, I agree. Very unlikable teenager and Tom being like being gullible. So this is a sleepover party. And I don't know if Tom's undergoing the same thing that I am, but if he is, then it could be something like, eh, deep down he knows, but he just doesn't want to be a hard ass because he kind of wants his son to like him.

[01:07:49] And that's not very good parenting, but I know I found myself in that situation where I don't follow through on consequences for things just because I don't like the confrontation, you know? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. No, I totally get it. Some dads, uh, err the other way and are just total hard asses, but me and Tom are too easy on our sons. Fun fact. I'm, uh, my cat son.

[01:08:18] I have two little five month old cat sons and I'm, uh, trying to train them not to jump on the counter. And one of the ways that I've been doing it that's not working is to say no and, uh, put them down. But then I'm like, Oh, but then they're going to hate me. And they're going to think I'm the, I'm the bad human. And David never does it. So David's going to be the good human. One thing I would never do is feed my cats from the table.

[01:08:48] And, uh, we're very strict about that. If the kids have ever even thought about it, I'm like, no, no, no, no, no. Because I know that then they'll start begging all the time and it really works. Like they don't, they don't beg us when we eat dinner. Good. So that's, that's good. But then we give them treats every once in a while, you know, cat treats. Yeah. You're not made of steel. You gotta, you gotta give your. Like we gotta, yeah, balance it out with treats. Yes. They're cats. They deserve it. They deserve all the, all the good.

[01:09:30] All right. That is our show. Thanks so much for listening. Everyone. We'll have probably a quick spoiler section at the end, but for now, that's it. Uh, and you can also leave a comment for any episode in our podcastica discord or Facebook group.

[01:09:53] We put up posts each week for each episode, or you can also chat with us in there and other listeners about Widow's Bay or whatever else you're watching. And I'll put a link in the show notes to that. Uh, I forgot to mention it at the top, but we're a week late because I made a mistake with my scheduling and a few people said, where are you guys? So that was, that was nice. Yeah. Some people cared. And if you care, please don't forget to just go on Apple podcasts, leave us a rating. We will love you for that. It will help a lot.

[01:10:22] And Karen will sit on your face. All right. That's our show. Thanks for listening. Also, we know what you are. Okay. Let's just do a quick secret segment. Do you have anything for spoilers? Uh, yeah, I'm, I mean, sorry. I take it back. Not, not exactly.

[01:10:50] I mean, we know that, uh, Reverend Bryce, this is probably, I think the last episode we get to see of him, right? Yeah. Spoilers, everybody. If you don't want to hear spoilers, stop listening right now. This is a spoiler section. Yeah. I already, I already said that, but just want to make sure. Yeah. Yeah. He's going to hang himself. Yeah. Yeah. That's why he's saying, may God forgive me. Right. Right. And, and I had sort of forgotten the lead up to it as I watched it the first time.

[01:11:18] It was so shocking the first time I watched it, you know, all the way through. So I'm kind of sad knowing that that's coming because he seems like a good guy. Yeah. He wanted to have a beer with, with Tom. He did. He did. He's one of the few that wanted to hang out with Tom. He seems really nice to Tom. Yep. Yep. Um, does Richard Warren end up headless? I can't, couldn't remember.

[01:11:42] He doesn't end up headless because we get to see him with his head on the boat and then he's turns into dust. But so yeah, is he in a, how do we see him again? I can't even remember. Did his body survive that whole time? His body survived the whole time. They dug him up or something? Yeah. When they dug him up. Why the hell was he headless then? Just the statue is headless. Yeah. But somebody, somebody clearly cut the head off the statue. Yes.

[01:12:09] I thought it would be funny if he died by decapitation. And so they made a statue of him headless. That would be, that would be amazing. Or if, uh, in the, um, in the city hall office, if one of the to-do items was reattach, uh, his head. Yeah, it should be. What else? So that, well, I guess. So Reverend Bryce was like, oh shit, the bells ring. That means the island wants nine sacrifices.

[01:12:38] I don't know if that was real. I just going to confirm by listening to this well that goes down to where the entity lives and see if I hear the spooky sounds or something like that. Right. Yes. Then he heard the evil. Yes. Yeah. Oh, it's so bad. It's so bad. Yeah. And then when he says to Tom, you know, Tom, it's Bryce. I heard it. God forgive me. That makes me think he thinks Tom knows all the lore of this thing.

[01:13:05] And I've been under the impression that Tom has not wanted to hear anything about any of it and doesn't know. Agreed. Like I heard what? What did he hear exactly? I mean, and Tom, and we know now, I mean, I think we, we eventually see that Tom has to, um, didn't we see that he has to go through the reverend's office? Like, don't they try to like figure out what happened to him and why he did what he did? I think so. Yeah. It sounds familiar.

[01:13:35] And then last, uh, the whole thing about warning us about sunset cocktails is kind of cool that you think Tom's going to go to the sunset cocktails thing, but he doesn't end up getting there and Patricia's pissed. And then next week, the episode will be all about that and leading up to it. And, uh, I think I watched that either tired or high. Cause I only remember a little bit of it, but I remember loving the idea of it. So I'm excited to dig in. You're in for a treat. Get to it. Yeah.

[01:14:05] It's so good. All of these episodes are great, but now it's really cooking. All right. It's time to go back into the ocean to our, to our watery graves. Hi everybody. Glug, glug, glug, glug, glug. I like this one. I love it. This is a very interesting fact, like we'll look for fun. It's on a part of a very ilegant music that came from Volika. And it's like, don't start force us in a way. Thank you.
