[00:00:00] Hey Zed Heads, welcome back to the podcast, I'm Jason. And I'm the Eiffel Tower, now obviously. Do you think we should stop saying our names every time? People know who we are by now. Yeah, but it's sort of tradition too.
[00:00:49] It's a comforting thing maybe that people like to hear. It's the rhythm of it. I don't know, let us know if you have an opinion on that. Anyway, we're going to go through your feedback for The Walking Dead, Daryl Dixon, season 1, episode 4, La Dame de Fer.
[00:01:01] We said we would not come back unless we got a bit more and we got a bit more so here we are. Wait, people are listening, they know who we are. So we're going to start with a call.
[00:01:11] We actually got more calls than text this time so we'll start with a call and that's from Sam Harfenist. Hi Jason, hi Lucy, it's Sam from Boston. Episode 4 was probably my least favorite so far. You're still really good.
[00:01:29] I mean, I think they did an amazing job as usual and Harris is just gorgeous and you can tell everyone's just dedicated to telling the story. It was just not that interesting and I've been trying to figure out why I just sort
[00:01:44] of disengaged a lot while watching it. And I think it was because you two had talked about the plot holes that were a little bit more difficult to follow. We made it worse. I'm like, what is Quinn doing?
[00:01:56] He's like, I know what'll make Isabelle fall in love with me and want to be with me again. I'm going to kidnap her nephew. What is Stockholm syndrome? It doesn't, I was like, this doesn't really track.
[00:02:09] And then yeah, I had no idea what was going on with the diversion and everything. And then does it take a long time to get out of Paris by boat? Is it hours and hours?
[00:02:21] I'm like, she's gonna go to Quinn and what, he's gonna make a phone call? I didn't think we still had phones. I don't know, maybe it's a radio. But just sort of letting all this stuff go, like okay, suspension of disbelief, suspension
[00:02:32] of disbelief, like Daryl holding his breath that long in the beginning. But it was just like, I think if I had to guess, I think the writers had to set up a way for Daryl to be the sole guardian of Laurent.
[00:02:45] And this was just sort of a clunky way of doing it. Like that whole goodbye at the end of the episode, that didn't really feel earned. At least in my opinion. I'm not a writer. I'm not an expert.
[00:03:00] I'm not like, wait, oh, okay, you're just gonna give him, okay, you, all right. So yeah, I didn't really, maybe that's just how they had to do it. But I still, you know, I enjoy the episode and vicious Daryl coming back out again with the stabbing. Yikes.
[00:03:18] Looking forward to more coverage. Thank you guys. Yeah, that's pretty much how I felt. Did Sam come and play? That's the same Sam that was playing Cards Against Humanity the weekend, right? Yeah. Sam's great. Amazing cat as well. Loki. Hi, Loki, if you're listening.
[00:03:35] Yeah, I was thinking about the episode a little more and I think it took a while for you and I talking about the whole torture scene to get on the same wavelength because for me, I was just so disturbed at seeing Daryl repeatedly stab a guy.
[00:03:56] Because that's like Michael Myers shit, you know? Stabbing a guy in the gut repeatedly is beyond anything we've seen him do before. And I said last, you know, in the podcast that he's tortured people before and maybe
[00:04:12] they just had to amp it up because they need to top themselves all the time. But even with that, it's so disturbing to me to see who's supposed to be the hero just repeatedly stabbing a guy who is your captor or your captive.
[00:04:26] And so I was so focused on that, that what he was saying was the fact that it was out of character, which I did end up agreeing with you. Yeah, it does seem out of character.
[00:04:34] I think they were doing it just to show some of Daryl's backstory and also explain why he could stab a guy that many times without killing him. But I was just more like horrified by watching him do that. I do think you're right, though.
[00:04:47] I think it's more needy for someone to go on and on like that. Yeah, it was the grandstanding that got me. Yeah, no, that was the bit that really… Yeah, I was like, we were wrong. I was like, yeah, the stabbing I can handle, the grandstanding, no.
[00:05:05] But you're right, though. It's not his style to make up, to say a story, whether it's true or not, to just lay out a story like that. No, not in that context. Like he'll sometimes share a little anecdote like Cherokee Rose or whatever, but that just
[00:05:17] felt, I don't know. It felt strange to me, but I know that we've got some people who feel differently and that's okay. Just because I think something doesn't mean it's right. No, it's not okay. It's not okay? They need to agree with us.
[00:05:28] If you do not agree, you'll get sent to Paris on a boat. Actually, that sounds great. Yeah, grand prize for disagreeing with us. Grand prize is going to Paris. All right, so Steve Barr says, Hi Jason and Lucy, thanks for covering the show.
[00:05:45] I thought we were going to see all sorts of special zombies in this show, but unless I missed them, we've had one pack of burners and that's it. Steve, I think you're right.
[00:05:54] There were some that were getting up quicker, but I don't know if we've seen any speedy zombies yet. We saw the burners in the first episode at the organic market and then we saw more burners outside in the back of Isabel's apartment. So that's two packs of burners.
[00:06:14] And yeah, the one in the lab seemed super strong and the burners in the backyard also seemed more agile. Maybe like you said, they got up faster. So it's not much more than what Steve said, but it's a little bit more, I think.
[00:06:30] And I saw this one website had sort of categorized how the variants are like uber zombies or what extra powers they have. The ones we saw in the Walking Dead could grab things and climb things and seemed a little smarter and more aware, right? Yeah, very much.
[00:06:48] Like it surprised me in both Dead City and Daryl Dixon that we've not…they don't seem to be the norm yet. Yeah. Yeah, I want to see more zombies like that. That was really cool. But there's like extra awareness, the ability to grab, the ability to climb.
[00:07:03] These are all potential new things that we may see that we already have seen. The acid, blood, the super strength and the speed we saw in the zombie at the end of World Beyond. Remember? It was faster. That was the fastest one I've seen.
[00:07:16] And it turned faster and more aggressive. So maybe we'll see one uber zombie that has all of that. All right, now more calls. Here's Robin. Robin! Bonjour mes amis. Bonjour. Mon nom est Robin. C'est Robin. Comment allez-vous? Fine. Où est la bibliothèque?
[00:07:39] That was my personal favorite in ninth grade. I just recorded but I went a little bit over so I'm going to do it again. I called last week. Something happened. I don't know if it didn't go through.
[00:07:49] I had some thoughts, which I guess I don't really remember what they were. But this week I didn't really love the episode as much. I'm really…as I did, I loved the Demi-Monde. I loved that whole thing. I was very…oh, here's a thought.
[00:08:04] I was really petrified when they were in the catacombs and the skulls because that just screamed trap to me. And I was really surprised they didn't leave somebody behind to make sure that they came out okay. But this week, I'm not really sure about Anna.
[00:08:21] She's kind of a cypher. Not really sure what her motivations are. Not really sure what she's got planned. Is she going to work with Isabelle or, you know, I don't know. But that'll be interesting to see. And Isabelle, I'm not really sure.
[00:08:36] I listened a couple times but I'm still not really sure why she stayed behind and why she thinks that Quinn took Laurent in order to get to her and to get her back. That'll be interesting to see. Of course, Laurent was at the Eiffel Tower.
[00:08:54] Last week I said I thought that little charm that Anna gave him was going to come into play somehow, but I guess it didn't. It was just the Eiffel Tower in general. Really interested to see Daryl go to the dark side again. We've seen him do it before.
[00:09:07] He was really brutal with Randall way back on the farm. And I was so kind of like, how does this guy get up and walk when he's been stabbed several times with a really long, really pointy ice pick?
[00:09:20] And then Daryl walked away from him when he was getting eaten by the walkers, which I thought was, you know, Daryl can do that. He's done it before. Bon appétit. But it was interesting to see that there was such a big hurry up, hurry up.
[00:09:32] We got to go. The Janaye is closing off Paris and Daryl and Laurent get in the boat and just kind of float down the Seine looking at the scenery. There was not really, I mean, I felt like there should be some urgency there.
[00:09:49] And then Janaye was, I was very scared when she was holding the baby. I thought for sure that she was just going to put her hand over it and smother it. And rock on with your bad self, Miss Sylvie, with your first kiss. Oh my God.
[00:10:05] She's too cute. I'm so afraid for her. She's something terrible is going to happen. That's just my thoughts for today. I'm sure we'll talk again soon. Bye. Oh, Robin. It's also nice to hear from you. Bonsoir. Yeah, it is nice to hear from you.
[00:10:23] And I looked at my notes for last week's episode and your call is in there, but maybe I accidentally didn't play it. Sorry about that. Didn't it drop out at the end? Someone got cut off last week. Someone did. I think that was someone else. Yeah.
[00:10:36] I don't know. But anyway, glad you called, Robin. Can't disagree with anything you said. I mean, floating down the Seine and there should be some urgency. Was there a motor? I don't think there was a motor, right? Or was there a motor on the boat? It's European time.
[00:10:48] It's how we do it. It's Paris. Take it in. It's Paris, man. Even Genet's men are like, no, no, go slowly. Go slowly before we take you. Look, it's the Statue of Liberty. Liberté, égalité, fraternité. Like, yeah, OK. All right. Here's Steve. Hello, the cast of us.
[00:11:03] This is Steve and this is going to be for Daryl Dixon's season one, episode four. I'm not going to try to say the French because I don't speak French. Just say it, Steve. There was a little fall through the ceiling. Had no repercussions.
[00:11:08] He's just back in the catacombs or wherever he is. Wait, maybe he's in the catacombs. Maybe he's in the catacombs. Maybe he's in the catacombs. Maybe he's in the catacombs. Wait, maybe he's dreaming. Did Daryl just get bit or were they not able to bite through his boot?
[00:11:25] OK, I guess they couldn't bite through his boot. So we got out of the basement and now he can really find the you are here map. There's the first effort. The conductor guy from the oh no, that's the pigeon guy.
[00:11:35] They shot him and Daryl just threw his knife and killed that guy. Nice. Isabel, you searched all night. Did you check the Eiffel Tower? Good one, Daryl. Paris kind of sucks. Why are there sandbagged in walkers at the bottom of the Eiffel Tower? That just seems weird.
[00:11:50] Who corralled them in there? And of course, now this moment they're going to break free. We get to see Daryl use the flail again. Nice. How do these guys know where he was and where to find him? Oh, he's talking about Isabel or Isa. She's parting these.
[00:12:06] Quinn sent them. Laurent tells everyone. What was the point of reading the joke in English and then the punchline in French and not giving us subtitles on it? Daryl, you have become violent. You're just knifing this guy. And there's the second F word. Nobody F with Jimmy anymore.
[00:12:21] How is this guy even walking around? Daryl stabbed him in the gut a bunch of times. Okay, so Quinn just negotiated for a painting to give them Daryl for the painting, but he doesn't tell him that he's got the boy. Oh, there's the third F word.
[00:12:35] Someone besides Daryl got to say the F word. This guy who he stabbed just said F your mother. On another F word, this time from Quinn. Well, Quinn kind of held his own against Daryl, but remember, this is Daryl.
[00:12:47] He fought Beta and I never forget when he told Negan, you and me ain't never been in a room before. All right, I'm just going to stop counting F bombs at this point. Oh, he has the painting.
[00:12:57] That means is the guy in the boat taking Daryl and Laurent to Janaye? When there's the other Statue of Liberty, the one that's in France. I guess not because that's where the episode ends. Talk to you later. I love that Steve's doing a running F bomb count.
[00:13:12] It makes me really happy. I was in the back of my head like, oh, didn't they already say that a couple of times? But it sounds like there were like four or five, which is, I think, a walking dead record. It's Parisian rules. You can just swear whenever.
[00:13:24] If it was in Scotland, it would just be un-airable at this point. Yeah, it would just be constant. Constant swearing. Deep wood. Yeah, yeah, that's crazy. He mentioned the joke, you know, the croque monsieur, and that reminded me that I saw
[00:13:42] in Reddit, someone said, because I said it was funny because what would a vampire want to eat a croque monsieur, which literally translates to crunchy mister or crunchy guy. But they said that also croque means crunch as in like eat, like bite. So it's like bitey guy.
[00:13:58] Also, it's the specific name of that dish. Yeah, the croque monsieur. That's the double meaning. This is how you make a joke way less funny. Explain the fuck out of it. Explain the shit out of it. Make sure the minutiae are really focused in on.
[00:14:15] All right, next is from Karen Sheet, who says, this show seems to be the Walking Dead universe's answer to the oft asked question, what would The Walking Dead be like if it aired on HBO? The brutality went up a notch here.
[00:14:28] Have we ever seen Daryl repeatedly stab somebody like that before? No. I mean, we've seen Murder Jacket Rick do it, but it felt so dark for Daryl. I'm not opposed to it. I like that the show doesn't hold its punches. Literally.
[00:14:42] That's why I also was nervous when J'Nai held that baby. Yeah. You know, I had that moment where I was like, if this was main show, I'd be like, yeah, that baby's safe. But this I was like, I don't know.
[00:14:55] But I liked what happened because it was a bit unpredictable. Yeah. I think that's a nice way of having it though. It's not as simple as I am an evil baby killer. Yeah. The tension. You wouldn't want to see her like toss it in the sand or something.
[00:15:09] Yeah. That'd be bad. Yeah. All right. Okay. Here's Colin. Hey guys, I'm back. It's Colin the Cricket Man. Great episode. I can't say I loved every minute of it, but that's every episode. I'm not drunk this week. Sending this recording in. Too bad.
[00:15:31] I feel like I was all over the place last week, but you know what? Can't all be winners. Right. But yeah, I love the episode. Quinn, I got to quit watching the trailers for the next week. He's really starting to look like a real prick.
[00:15:46] I'm glad Darryl handed it to him. He's getting their fucking brass knuckle to the face. I said, see the pigeon guy go. He reminded me of my, my grandpa said he didn't have pigeons yet. Little goat.
[00:16:03] But one thing, I just got to say it because it's funny and I just enjoy making people laugh. The French accent when they're pronouncing Laurent is, it's like, it makes me giggle like a little school girl. But yeah, thanks for covering the show guys.
[00:16:27] I'll be calling in every week. Get it? With that, I'll give you my Negan impression. Little pig, little pig, let me in. All right. Thanks guys. We'll see y'all next week. That was good. Yeah, that's pretty good. I like that. I didn't. No, I'm just kidding. Your bond.
[00:16:48] That's how good it was. Yeah. No, I'm just kidding. That was awesome. Yeah. So French, the, if you're not used to it, the pronunciations are quite different than English and a lot of words end with ENT, but you say all instead of aunt, like you would hear.
[00:17:09] So it's Laurel, Laurel or something. All right. Here is Gloria. Bonsoir Jason and Lucy. This is Gloria from Salem. This is for Darrell Dixon episode. This one started off so weird. Obviously Darrell wasn't hurt, Kurt crashing through the floor, but that dream, even though
[00:17:31] it wasn't real, really scared the shit out of me. Do you think he's actually starting to believe Laurent is kind of special and he got an immediate fuck right at the beginning, right out of the way.
[00:17:44] At least he was able to take in a little culture on his way to Isabelle's apartment. I like that. It looked almost normal. That woman playing the cello and the couple having a meal kind of nice, but then you know, you saw the walkers.
[00:17:57] It was so sad that master Raymond got killed. I mean, and Tom was killed needlessly, a pigeon guy and Jason, I've been listening to Miriam Blake for years. I was just hoping you guys would do Outlander too. Yeah, well I did like the hug between Darrell and Isabelle.
[00:18:18] I'm sorry, but I do not see any chemistry there. I really hope she's not falling for him. Watching them take out zombies was cool. Loved Darrell swinging that medieval mace round. So awesome. Of course, sneaky guys were going to take Laurent. How rude.
[00:18:35] That guy they took hostage was a creepy piece of shit in my opinion. Glad he's gone. Jeanne? Yes. Wicked complicated chick. Oh my God, isn't she in charge? I was so worried when she held that crying baby. I thought she was going to harm the poor thing.
[00:18:52] I kept saying to the TV, no, no, no, don't do it. Don't do it. I got the feeling that the woman is pretty evil. She seems very manipulative. I don't know why the two leads split up either at the end.
[00:19:05] It didn't seem like there was any reason for it. I mean, what is Isabelle going to do for Quinn or with him that's going to be to Darrell and Laurent's advantage? She should be with the nephew. So that's it for me. Talk to you next week. Au revoir.
[00:19:18] Got to say ciao too, you know, being Italian at home. Check out our White Lotus podcast we're covering season two where they're in Italy right now. We say ciao a lot on there. I just need to sanity check. Could you hear a cat meowing as well?
[00:19:32] Yeah, I wondered if it was in your background or hers. I was just like, I'm going mad. I can hear cats. I can hear cats. That's amazing. Gloria Salem cats. Amazing. She's talking about why Isabelle went back to Quinn and I think Colin mentioned that
[00:19:56] too or somebody else. And I mean, what they said is Isabelle felt like Quinn has connections and can somehow, we don't know how, get Darrell and Laurent past this perimeter that Jeunet has put around Paris.
[00:20:11] And we don't know how Quinn's going to signal to his people to do it or how they're going to accomplish it. But I imagine we'll see that next week, right? We'll see how that is. If we don't, then it's pretty ridiculous. It's like a tenuous reason at best.
[00:20:26] But I mean, just for her to assume that he'd be able to do it and to make that big of a decision rather than just try to sneak past seems crazy. But I think that because that's where they sent the story, that we'll see how Quinn helps
[00:20:41] or betrays them. He'll do something next week to try to get them through, I assume. I hope so. So we'll see. We have a message from Nathan Eshelman. Hi, Nathan.
[00:20:53] It says, I really like that when Quinn said, I was the one who got you away from the tower, Laurent said you weren't there. It really highlights what's important to people is showing up for them, especially kids.
[00:21:04] I'm intrigued to see what role Anna has to play going forward. The fact she knew where Laurent would probably be ties in with the ideas from last episode that information is a currency.
[00:21:13] I'm nervous she might try to harm Isabel, but I hope she realizes Quinn isn't worth it. Oh, interesting. I can see it. Yeah, maybe. What do I think she's going to do that? I don't think, yeah, I think at this point she's disenchanted with Quinn. I think so.
[00:21:37] I don't think she's going back to be with him so much as to get something done. Maybe yeah, I kind of hope so. All right, here's Tej, who I think we've only heard from once so far this season and wasn't that into it.
[00:21:50] So let's see if he's changed at all or if it's the same. Hello Jason and Dr. Lucy. This is Tej from Wisconsin. We're four episodes in. I'm really trying to like the show, especially since everybody else on the podcast seems
[00:22:04] to be loving it much more than I do. But I just, I don't know, I can't get there. And the littlest things are bugging me like seeing Jimi Hendrix's Tombstone, which was clearly just Jim Morrison. Norman Reedus wanted to pay homage to him.
[00:22:19] So the writers were like, okay, we'll throw it in. Why would he have been reading the freaking tombstone? I don't get it. And a bunch of other little things that I think wouldn't have bothered me in the main
[00:22:30] show or even Dead City or to be frank, even here, right? The way all the community of zombies, which were not fresh zombies under the Eiffel Tower stayed there just until Laurent showed up like, I'm sorry.
[00:22:44] No, he wasn't the only person to visit the Eiffel Tower to get the zombies all activated in the last period of time. And then the bad guys just happened to show up at just the right time. And why do we even think Laurent is a freaking Messiah?
[00:22:57] Nobody has explained that. Because he's good with Rubik's cube. I'm realizing, I don't like Daryl as a character. And I think that's my problem. All these things are bugging me. That's an issue. He's not funny. He's not a particularly skillful mastermind.
[00:23:13] He's not a good leader and absolutely zero sex appeal at all. That's not an opinion. I think just as a standalone, I'm not liking Daryl. But I will say this. I am having Logan tentatively has agreed to have a Daryl Dixon marathon with me the weekend
[00:23:34] of the finale and he likes Daryl. So we'll see if it's just the character because it's rough. I'm going to go watch Fear. Oh, geez. No, no. I think, yeah, if you don't like, I mean, so the thing he said about the zombies being
[00:23:59] conveniently like penned in under the Eiffel Tower and only getting out when they get there, you know, that is the kind of thing that happens in The Walking Dead sometimes. And you just have to excuse it.
[00:24:13] And if you're into the story, it's easier to excuse that kind of thing. But if you're not, then it just makes it worse. You know, that's what I think. Like if you don't like Daryl, then yeah, you're it's going to be hard to excuse any little
[00:24:26] niggling like thing about this stuff. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, right. Same thing. And it's OK to say this isn't my thing or this is absolutely what I'm into. Yeah. Just don't ever call us again. No, I'm just kidding. Yeah, tease your dad to us.
[00:24:41] Logan can call, tell the boys I said hi. Yeah, tell Logan. Don't waste your time. Just kidding. We love you, Teach. We love you. I do. I push back a little on the Jim Morrison thing or as you said, Jimi Hendrix, because Père
[00:24:57] Lachaise, in my experience, when anyone talks about Père Lachaise, they go, you know, Jim Morrison's grave is there. And both times I've been to Paris, I went to Père Lachaise in part just to see Jim Morrison's grave.
[00:25:13] That's kind of the American thing, probably, you know, I don't know if it. I don't know. I think it's pretty. I mean, I remember my mom talking about it when she went to Paris.
[00:25:22] And when you go there, there's all these graves of all these famous people from more from further in the past. But his grave in particular always has flowers and booze and shirts and things on it because it's the attraction for that cemetery.
[00:25:38] So it's funny in the sense that, like, I don't think the doors were particularly. I don't know, they weren't like the Beatles or something like an era defining thing, but there's something about that whole thing. I don't know. It's yeah, I'm with you, Jason.
[00:25:52] I kind of I kind of get it. Yeah. I mean, he was like rock and roll bad boy poet who drank himself to death. So there's appeal in that for people who like the edginess of it, you know. All right. My turn? No, Elena. Your turn. Oh, sorry.
[00:26:12] Elena's turn. Elena's turn. Here we go. Hi, Jason and Lucy. This is Elena calling from Massachusetts, Lowell, Massachusetts. I've been just listening to your episode with the listener feedback for the third episode of Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead.
[00:26:31] And I just heard Jason say that he was heading to Massachusetts, was thinking about maybe having a meet up with followers of the podcast. I'm not on Facebook. The information I get is solely through this podcast and through Patreon.
[00:26:49] So if you're going to do that, I would love to meet you. Love to meet you. Oh my God, that sounds creepy. Okay. Big fan of the podcast. I love you guys from the beginning. I'm actually listening to all of the podcasts from the beginning.
[00:27:10] I'm in December of 2013. And I love you guys. And again, not a group person necessarily and not a member of Facebook. But Jason, if you're doing something in Massachusetts, I'd love to meet up with people who love the podcast as much as I do. And it'd be great.
[00:27:34] Okay, thanks. You guys are amazing. Bye. Oh, that's great. Yes. I'll be in Boston. I think it's the 20th, Saturday the 20th or Friday the 20th of October. Yeah, Friday the 20th.
[00:27:48] And so I'm going to figure out a time probably in the evening and a bar, probably one of the bars I used to hang out at when I was in grad school in Boston just so I can go back there.
[00:28:00] So I will before then when one of the next couple episodes firm that up. And that'll be anyone who's in the area that wants to come and hang out. And also hopefully a few of the people who are, you know, hanging out there already.
[00:28:14] It's a bunch of us Zed heads that rented an Airbnb. The Airbnb is like an hour away from Boston. So I'm only going to be in Boston for that one day. But yeah, I'm gonna have some kind of a get together and it'll be great.
[00:28:27] And yeah, you should come even though you're not a group person because it's always fun and you guys people like I learned this when I was doing the conventions. We always had listener meetups and I was a little nervous about it at first, but I
[00:28:38] quickly overcame that because people are awesome and you always have the walking dead to talk about. So, you know, there's something to talk about. It's true. That's where I met Jason was listening me up, although there was always less people at the UK ones.
[00:28:54] I don't know why we're shy. Well, no, I mean when I would do conventions, sometimes there would just be one or two people and it depended on the city. But then in Atlanta, there'd be like 30 or more people.
[00:29:07] Yeah, I'm so sad that I didn't get to go to one of the Atlanta cons. That would have been so cool. It feels like the home of the walking dead. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, because people would go for the weekend and then tour.
[00:29:22] So no, I were basically Alexandria, you know, and then go to the convention. Super fun. Oh, so fun. All right. Your turn. Yeah, now it's my turn. Chris Lebow says, Salut les amis. Entry number three in Daryl's handy phrase book for post-apocalyptic France.
[00:29:41] When you find out that Paris is not all it's cracked up to be, you say, Paris est nulle. Paris kind of sucks. Just so you guys know. Do you know how to say the F word or something similar? In French. French. I know. Merde. Merde de shit.
[00:30:01] I think it's the only bad word I know. Educate us people. Tiffane? Yeah, let us know. So he goes on. Well, Daryl and Laurent take a leisurely float down the Seine as they say au revoir to the city of lights. There seemed no urgency in their escape.
[00:30:18] That gave them time to once again gaze in awe at the art and architecture of the city. I mean, a river cruise. Yeah, it's so nice. Sylvie, I'm really rooting for you. Daryl's kiss. Ooh la la. I hope your beau survives.
[00:30:32] I hope you don't turn out to be one of the many nuns this young man has seduced. Does he have a large collection of rosary beads? Hmm? Isabel, don't despair. You and Daryl will always have Paris such as it was.
[00:30:47] Why is Isabel staying behind to throw the bad guys off Laurence Trail? Au revoir. P.S. Ever hear of Paris syndrome? No. No. I don't know what he means by that. No. No, I've never heard of that.
[00:31:00] She's staying behind to play Kate Quinn so he'll help her with his connections. Get Daryl and Laurel out from Paris. I wanted to mention too, I was thinking something about Teej's call that I forgot, but Teej,
[00:31:13] I don't know if you had a chance to listen to our episode a little ways back, just like two episodes before Daryl started where we just talked about our top five Daryl moments. Just researching that made me, it kind of primed me for this series because I've sort
[00:31:30] of been okay with Daryl. I've liked him more in the Angela Kang era, but doing that episode made me more like, oh yeah, Daryl's freaking great. So I wonder if you'll listen to that, it might help you feel more the same way. I don't know.
[00:31:42] It was a really good exercise to do before we went into this actually. I kind of felt the same. Yeah. Okay. Your turn. No, not your turn. Sorry. Tammy's turn. Here's Tammy. Hi guys. Tammy from Boston again. Wow.
[00:31:57] Walking Dead producers are wicked good at playing on our emotions for Daryl. He was the boy whose mother sadly wasn't strong enough to save him from his abusive father. And at one point he had told us a story, they didn't even know he was missing when he was
[00:32:13] lost as a kid. It's no wonder why he has a kinship with strong women. Notice I didn't say romance. Carol, Beth, Connie, now Isabel. All of them. Strong kinship. Leah, yep, they had a romance, but she ended up abandoning him and dog. I am loving this French setting.
[00:32:40] So great to be out of the woods of Georgia. So I too was wondering why English was so good for these kids in the school. And then I started in my mind rationalizing, well, maybe the kids teacher was an American.
[00:32:56] We never got to meet her or see her or hear her speak. She obviously taught them English very, very well. And all their parents were dead. And the English increased unintentionally, maybe Madame Dubois, maybe she wasn't a local, maybe she wasn't American. None of her family were there.
[00:33:20] Not that she would have to have children, but children, siblings, parents, family, anybody. She was in a good safe place, but none of them were there or talked about. So maybe she wasn't a local long before the apocalypse.
[00:33:34] I posit I think if that were true, they should have called her, you know, Mrs. Smith or something not Madame Dubois. Oh my God. Did anyone else get vampire looking vibes from Anna? That was the female singer with Quinn.
[00:33:59] When she was on camera, all I kept hearing in the back of my mind was the theme song from True Blood. She does creep me out like a vampire. She does. I know different genre. I'm not a god.
[00:34:12] Despite Kirkman's insistence that there's no God in the Walkin Dead universe, the religious theme themes continue for all the characters. We had Jesus, we had the Saviors, Father Gabriel, the Sanctuary, Jadis, Daryl's wings, and now Isabel and what was the other nun's name? Sylvie, I think.
[00:34:35] And Laurent, the Messiah. Just like Father Gabriel, Sylvie remains a believer, but no longer gonna practice celibacy maybe. Faith and hope, they're always tested. Speaking of testing, Walkin Dead universe always shows us groups performing walker testing throughout. The governor's guy, he was testing for lingering music memory.
[00:35:01] That little girl, she picked up her teddy bear, that was the very first walker we ever saw. Morgan's wife going for the doorknob, you know, stuff like that. Doomsday preppers, wasn't it Troy that was doing on Fear the Walkin Dead the testing to see when they turn?
[00:35:18] And then of course the CRM with the As and the Bs. So here's my wicked bizarre prediction that J'Nai actually doesn't want Daryl back for revenge. He actually needs Daryl back. Only for his American blood, meaning non-variant progressed blood.
[00:35:40] Non-burners, non-fast, it's maybe still purer if you get it from overseas. So we've all known for years the virus lives inside us. Back, we found that out in the CDZ visit days. Okay, don't think I'm crazy or maybe do think it. But here's my theory.
[00:36:01] I've been tossing it around in my head for years since Alicia got sick. So Alicia did not die due to some internal immunity. Granted, she got really, really sick. They cut off the arm a whole bit, but she got really, really sick, but she didn't die.
[00:36:16] I've always thought she had a little bit of a weak immunization probably because, now stick with me here, because she and her boyfriend did have sex after he was bitten. I know it's a crazy theory, but fluid's fluid.
[00:36:37] So it might explain this crazy little messiah plot we have now, because Leron could be even more immunized, obviously, due to his mother being bitten and he's got the umbilical cord blood, which is obviously more.
[00:36:52] So if that plays out maybe, in my mind at least, maybe this means someone like Father Gabriel who got Walker Juice in his eyes, he lost sight in the eye, but he didn't die. Maybe he has a slight, slight immunity.
[00:37:10] It was Tammy that got cut off last week as well, I just remembered. So if she's right, then if you get bitten, then it's your civic duty to go out and have sex with as many people. Bang while you can. Hurry up, I'm about to turn baby!
[00:37:28] Oh, I've heard that one before. Look at these marks! That looks about the shape of your own mouth. No, what? Shut up! What's that blood on your mouth? We've just solved the zombie apocalypse! Yeah, that's right! The world is going to be fine. Amazing!
[00:37:49] Alright, I've got Dina from Boston who says, Hello Jason and Lucy. Just writing in about the Daryl torture scene. I was shocked at first, mouth open shocked, but that quickly morphed into delight. This does make me wonder about my mental state. Ah, Dina, we've all been there.
[00:38:06] She says, I do not find the violence out of character. Like you said, Daryl tortured Randall in season two. In that episode he started to back off a bit until Randall started talking about the teenage girls that his cohorts raped.
[00:38:18] At that point, Daryl loses his shit and really starts beating on Randall. I see the parallel here. He lets Isabel question him. He lets Isabel question the prisoner until said prisoner mocks Isabel and says she's a very bad girl or something to that effect.
[00:38:32] That's when Daryl takes action. I think he was sick of waiting for answers but seeing Isabel get hurt sets him off. But he didn't understand that. No, he said it and he said it in English. Oh, he said it. He said you're a very bad girl.
[00:38:48] You know, because the French English speaking in this is intermittent. Yes. Daryl has been a protector of women since the start, especially Carol. However, he was also a verbally abusive asshole to Carol and Laurie in season two. Flip flopping between protector of others and protector of self.
[00:39:04] At some point he no longer needs his shield of anger to protect himself. But that anger and violence does appear on behalf of others. Mostly it returns when he gets drunk and his feelings of inadequacy emerge. Poor Beth or sheer revenge. Poor fat Joey.
[00:39:18] But I like that about Daryl. He should not be perfect. Do you know what, Dina? As I'm thinking about how he punches Negan for mocking Rosita as well. Dina goes on to say, does this letter need to be edited? Probably. I disagree.
[00:39:31] In short, I relished the torture scene. The diatribe about Jimmy and the pig was a bit much, but it did make me laugh when he told Isabel, no, I just made that shit up.
[00:39:40] All in all, I liked this episode and found the dynamic between Isabel and Daryl more and more compelling and will lead to more character growth for both of them. I'm really hoping that Carol does not return.
[00:39:51] The pairing of main characters in these spin-offs is boring and Saturday morning cartoonish for those of us who remember Saturday morning cartoons. This show is a delight because Carol is not in it. Okay, shutting up now. I really need an editor. No, Dina, you don't need an editor.
[00:40:05] That's great. I love that. I was thinking about Carol coming back into it and thinking, where would she fit? How would she fit? I don't know. I don't know if I don't want her in it, but it seems weird to me now to think about
[00:40:18] her being in it. I think it's nice to have this story. It adds to the freshness that is just Daryl having to deal with everyone else. Someone, I think it was Tammy, said, so great to be out of the woods of Georgia. Wow, those words really hit me.
[00:40:37] Yes, so sick of the woods of Georgia. The woods of Georgia are great, but we've seen so much of that in The Walking Dead. That's, I think, subconsciously one reason why I've been finding this show so great is we're in a new environment and it's a beautiful environment.
[00:40:51] But I'm enjoying just having Daryl in a whole new situation. But also if Melissa McBride were ever to come back into it, I would also welcome that because I like them together and I want to see what she'd be like over here too. Yeah, they might make Sid.
[00:41:09] Yeah, and look for rats. Yep, that would be a highlight for me. They can find the Ratatouille one. Okay. Alright, here's Helen. Two more calls. Hi, this is a second recording because I don't know if I actually sent the first one.
[00:41:29] Hi Lucy, hi Jason, it's Helen in Scotland. Hello. And I've got four points. First point is I'm not watching The Walking Dead, Daryl Dixon, because we haven't got it in the UK. Lucy, you've certainly got some very special access going on. I am, however, listening to the podcast.
[00:41:51] I also listened to the Dead City podcast, but haven't seen Dead City yet. Oh, Helen. Nice. Yeah, so the next point is the last podcast, which was about episode, I don't know what number, anyway, La Dame des Fers.
[00:42:11] The opening of the podcast with Daryl doing his monologue was totally megan for me. I was really surprised when I heard it. Obviously, it's Daryl, but you know, so many words in so many sentences at the same time.
[00:42:29] And I know he's done torture and all of that, but this just felt really different. So he's changing. So yeah, I agree with Lucy, really megan-y. Point three, Calvados is definitely a brandy. It is a distilled from cider in the north of France.
[00:42:48] I think it's Normandy or maybe it was Athens. And I got a little bit drunk on it accidentally when I was 14 on a French exchange trip. Long story. But anyway, I've always remembered what Calvados was. My last point, number four is hooray for the rewatch.
[00:43:05] I will be listening and I can't wait. So thank you. Thank you. Hope you as well. And yeah, take care. Bye. Oh, Helen, it's so nice to hear from you. Yeah, that's great. That's lovely. Get a VPN and watch it. How can you watch it?
[00:43:27] Get AMC Plus, get a VPN is what I've heard. I don't know if that'll work, but could try it. Not that we can endorse any ways of doing anything. But hit us up and we'll have some tips maybe. Okay, here is our final call for this episode, Rebecca.
[00:43:44] Hi, Jason and Lucy. This is Rebecca from Houston. I haven't called in in a while, so I wanted to make this, submit this feedback for the last episode, the latest episode of The Daryl Show. I agree with Lucy.
[00:44:00] It just felt so out of Daryl's character to torture that guy so like quickly and willingly. Like were there other avenues? I don't know. It was weird. And yeah, I think it's interesting. He had that whole story, but the guy couldn't really understand it.
[00:44:19] So like what was the point? Unless it was his way of like justifying himself to Isabel maybe. I don't know. But then I go back and think about how the Whisperer War kind of almost started because of him because he was going to return Lydia to Alpha.
[00:44:38] But then when he realized that Lydia was being abused, it reminded him of himself when he was a kid. And so he said he changed his mind and said Lydia wasn't going back with them.
[00:44:53] And so that's kind of what was kind of a catalyst in the whole Whisperer War. So I wonder if he felt some sympathy for Laurent, Laurent, I can't say it. But he knew if the kids stayed with Quinn, the kid would not have a good life.
[00:45:14] And once again reminded him of himself. So he wanted to save the kid. I don't know. Just things I've been pondering over the last couple of days. Overall, this show I'm invested. It's nice to hear Daryl talk so much before we just get grunts and stuff.
[00:45:34] So that's been nice. I love Isabelle's character. She reminds me so much of Claire Danes, the actress. She looks so much like her. But anyway, but I think she's her. I like the character. She's complicated. She's layered. She's she's interesting.
[00:45:56] It's going to be interesting to see how this pans out with Quinn. Like, yeah. Why is he so interested in getting her?
[00:46:03] I mean, maybe he's got this weird obsession with her because I mean, when like the night it all went down when she was at the club and then we realized she was stealing people's stuff. Like, how did he know where to find her? Because right.
[00:46:17] He just came out of nowhere and like rescued her. So maybe he's always been this weirdo stalker obsessed guy with her. I don't know. That's really weird. But we'll see where it goes. I've enjoyed your coverage as always. And yeah, that's all I got for now.
[00:46:31] I'll talk to you later. Bye. Thank you. Oh, Rebecca. It's so nice to hear from you. Where? Well, I want to know where all the French zombie noises are. I haven't heard many of those. Yeah, I know people have really been letting us down there. All right.
[00:46:51] That is our show. Episode four. No, five. Forty one. I don't know what's wrong with me today. It'd be one of those days. I just had to do my taxes earlier. But thank you so much for listening, everybody. Thank you so much.
[00:47:12] Next episode is Walking Dead Daryl Dixon season one, episode five. Doza more. If you want to write in or leave us a voice message about it, you can find all our contact information at Podcastica.com. And while you're there, you can check out our other shows.
[00:47:26] If you like Ted Lasso, you should check out the podcast. Oh, you should check out the Revisited podcast, which is revisiting Ted Lasso. Believe it or not. And when I'm excited about coming up. Well, no, I should mention this, too.
[00:47:40] I don't think I've talked about it, but Great British Baking Show, more properly known as The Great British Bake Off, has just started up again. And Rima and Greg and Wendy covered the first episode on Strange Indeed.
[00:47:54] And I don't know if it's going to be a rotating group of hosts, but anyway, they're going to be covering all that on Strange Indeed. And it's really fun. If you wouldn't think a podcast about that show makes sense, it really is fun.
[00:48:04] I did a few in previous seasons and it was a blast. It's brilliant. It's really good. Really, really good. Great show, too. And we're going to be later next week, I think. Yeah, we're going to be a day later.
[00:48:20] So the episode should be out, I think, Wednesday morning for everybody. Amazing. And this episode is made possible by Patreon supporters like Tyler Scheele, who pledged their support at patreon.com slash Jason Kabassi. So thank you to Tyler.
[00:48:37] I don't mention this one ever, but if you pledge twenty five dollars a month, you get a signed Jason and Karen Post Apocalyptic Podcast rigged poster that Kirk Manley drew ages ago. And you get a haiku from me on the subject of your choice.
[00:48:52] And you get a 30 minute call with me if you want. Some people don't do that one. Yeah, but some do. All right. Thanks for listening. Don't get fit. Gloria Hernan.
