5. "The Jen Show" (S1E5)

Well, The Jen Show proved to be just that, between loving acts turned hospital visits, ill-advised blackmail, and the truth-telling bully you need but don’t want, Penny and Greg break down this episode of Extraordinary. Jen was a dim bulb in this episode, but we are gleefully reminded of the awesomeness of Carrie, and introduced to the powers of the brush! And good boys get the brush!

[00:00:00] S1E5, The Gen Show, Written by Emma Moran, Directed by Toby MacDonald

[00:02:39] He was lame. He was lame, but at least he was a little self-aware. Yeah, he was he was understood the stink of cowardice. How long will that take to wash off? I've been trying

[00:02:53] scrubbing it. Yeah, he was not the shithead of this episode. That award goes to Jen, but yeah, how'd you feel about overall? I loved the episode. It's definitely like a

[00:03:10] darker and more serious tone, at least by the end than we've had in the first four. But I think that the friendship between those two needed to have a break. We've already talked about this.

[00:03:23] Jen and Carrie. Jen and Carrie. That Carrie is someone who doesn't know her own worth. And it turns out that this has been going on since they were kids. And Jen just dominates their friendship. I loved the episode. I loved seeing Carrie have all that growth and change.

[00:03:46] It really did. It really did make for a like this was not just like a display how shitty Jen is. It was definitely a character development episode for Carrie where, you know, where we've talked

[00:04:00] about where maybe she'll start standing up for herself a little bit more. We talked about it with cash, but she deserves it elsewhere too. Carrie was still a fucking angel all this

[00:04:12] episode even with boo fucking who. I was like, you get it girl. Yeah, she didn't say anything that wasn't true. Nope. And Sophia Oxenham continues to just like blow me away. She's so good. She really is. And like basically, I mean, like she was basically playing the same

[00:04:39] character. But then that that shift at the end when she finally is just completely fed up with Jen, she almost becomes a different character. And she's like, Oh no, now I'm going to be strong

[00:04:51] and dominant and knowing myself worth. And hopefully it carries over into her other personal life. And by her, I mean the character, not the actress because she is phenomenal. She's fantastic. In the news, I have an interview with her that we can go over. Nice. And yeah,

[00:05:13] let's get into it, man. What's the humiliation of the week for your stand for me? For me, it's got to be Andy. And maybe it's for everybody else too. But that initial moment where where Jen discovers that Andy has not made it into the conservatoire.

[00:05:37] And like very specifically, I mean, the line will stick in my head forever. But you finger blasted your girlfriend into the hospital. Like I and like the shame on her face

[00:05:51] and the like the like the almost like the breaking of her soul in her eyes. The actress did that phenomenally, but she had so many moments like that in this episode where you could humiliation after humiliation. Yeah. I mean, well, in like at some point, she like started

[00:06:11] like during like the family dance, she started to kind of embrace it. And she's like, You know what? Oh, you want to embarrass me? Fuck you. I'm not going to be embarrassed. But this initial moment was just like, Oh God, something just died in her.

[00:06:24] And the actress portrayed it beautifully. How about you? For me, it was the moment when Carrie was on stage to give her speech. And, you know, you could hear Jen and her mother yelling in the background. And Carrie made eye contact with

[00:06:43] Rebecca. And Rebecca sort of went like shrugged, like what do you know? It's Jen, what did I say? And Carrie just crumbled, you know, she handed her cue cards to the principal guy and,

[00:06:54] you know, fled to the bathroom and was crying. And it was a really rough moment for her where she had to admit something that she wasn't telling herself the truth about in front of this person.

[00:07:08] And then Rebecca, who, you know, destroyed her. Yeah, she destroyed her in high school. Yeah. Yeah, to go to go in front of your, your former bully, who is now trying to be better and to have her everything that she said be proven true is just heartbreaking.

[00:07:33] And again, we, that's difficult. One of the ones in my, I thought you didn't know if you were going to mention this, but the one of the humiliation of the weeks in contention was Susan during

[00:07:48] Carrie's speech. We're like, oh, I'm sorry, now you can't fuck Susan. I don't want to fuck Susan. Maybe I'll fuck Susan. Like I was like, she's just kidding. She's just kidding.

[00:08:00] I was like, as a, as like a PTA mom, like I can totally appreciate the, the like clicky portion of that. But in written, I guess it's clique as opposed to click. But I was,

[00:08:18] I was, I was laughing pretty steadily through that. And I had to watch that scene a couple times to get all of the lines. It was, it was really great in the way that it was really awful.

[00:08:32] It was so horrible. It was so horrible yet entertaining. Yeah, very entertaining. So last week we did storylines, but this episode we agree is more, it lends itself to points. So we're going to go back to points this week.

[00:08:52] And then we'll see where we go next week. Yeah, absolutely. Like this, this one absolutely had points that I'd be like, I want to talk about that. We'll cover all the stuff in notes and

[00:09:03] stuff. But I mean, there were very specific things that I want to discuss. All right, you want to go first? Yeah, I thought we would get cash out of the way upfront.

[00:09:18] Okay. Because, you know, he's, he's a sad sack. He's moping around in the bathtub feeling sorry for himself. Yes, it's, it's sort of earned, right? He had a, he had a big humiliation last week.

[00:09:33] And it's understandable that he would want to mope around for a while. But I don't have a lot of patience for cash because he's just such a tool. I did really, really enjoy Jizz Lord trying to cheer

[00:09:49] him up. That was hilarious. So if you take cash and you put him by himself, he's just a knob. But if you take cash and you infuse Jizz Lord into the situation, the storyline becomes

[00:10:06] bearable and something that we're entertained by. But if it was just cash sitting in the bathroom by himself watching Penguin falling, Penguins falling into the ice, like that would just be like, this is fucking stupid. But yeah, the, the, the infusion of Jizz Lord into the situation was

[00:10:26] awesome. It was fantastic. I, you know, as everybody knows, maybe they don't, I have a cat. I love him very much. And I had to teach him when he was a kitten to enjoy the brush,

[00:10:39] because I think at first it overstimulated him and he would like attack it. But now I pulled the brush out and he like lies down and is like, oh, like sometimes it makes me uncomfortable how much he

[00:10:52] enjoys the brush. Like I'm like, are you getting turned on? I got you fixed. Like what's happening? Um, I thought Jizz Lord's lines were hilarious. He says it's one of the few things

[00:11:02] I remember from the cat times getting the brush pure bliss and then who gets the brush? Good boy. Don't brush me. Yeah. He's like, what the fuck are you doing? Stop. And he's like, what? It's

[00:11:16] fucking weird, man. Just relax. The brush is very powerful. No thoughts. Just brush. And then at the end, I'll get the brush. Yeah. So great. Oh, and I can see how that would feel good.

[00:11:33] Like whenever I am brushing my cat and he's like really into it, I'm always, um, I'm always thinking like this would feel good if I had like a, like a human size, you know, like brush and somebody

[00:11:44] to brush me like I get it. It must be like a massage. Like I use this really gentle silicone based brush. So it's like gentle on his skin. I had a question about this storyline though,

[00:11:57] or the whole cash tub thing. Yeah. At the very end, Jizz Lord comes in the bathroom one final time and like rearranges the bubble so that cash is penis isn't showing. Yep. And he says the girls

[00:12:08] are home. And I was like, did they come home together? Like were they in a car ride together? Were they on a train together? I, I imagined that Jizz Lord just heard the girls coming in.

[00:12:23] I mean, I imagine. Somebody coming in. Yeah. Somebody coming in. Hey, the girls are here because you just would assume that they're both coming home together. Yeah. I get what you're

[00:12:32] saying because I mean, I, I would absolutely not want to be a part of that car ride, that Uber home. Yeah. But yeah, I imagined that it was just a matter of, of, hey, someone's here. And so we're going to cover up your shame and no more penis.

[00:12:54] I love Jizz Lord so much. And I can't believe that that sentence just came out of my mouth. But he's, he's adorable. He's got those gigantic eyes and he's so flopsie. He's like a muppet cat.

[00:13:10] Oh, he's great. I love him. Yeah. He's, he's phenomenal. Yeah. Luke Rawlsson has done a great job being a cat who were a man who used to be a cat.

[00:13:23] Yeah. Anything else? Oh, that's it. Okay. My first point is I'm going to go ahead and go with the guest star, Rebecca. Yeah. So Rebecca, I did not look up who it was. Did you? Yes. The actor is Ella

[00:13:42] Brucallari and she's probably best known for call the midwife, which is a show I don't watch, but she's done like 26 episodes of call the midwife. My ex-wife used to watch, maybe still does watch call the midwife. So I am familiar with it. I've never watched it, but

[00:14:02] you know, apparently it's pretty popular. But this actor was phenomenal. Like she was so good and everything that she did, like everything she did was believable when she approached

[00:14:17] Sol Jin and Carrie in the closet. She's just like, Oh my God, how are you guys doing? This is amazing. Like it's crazy that you guys are here. It's been so long. And, and their, you know, their reactions

[00:14:31] to her looked like people with PTSD. They, they looked like, like, what are you doing? Like Jen's trying to be brave. What are you doing? Oh, I'm a teacher here. I'm locking up the, this

[00:14:46] hall and oh, do they let you hit kids now? What? And she just like didn't answer. She's just like, what? No, I'm, I'm nice now. Oh, prove it. What? How would you, I mean, it's a,

[00:15:02] it's like a state of being money. You can give us money. Jen, you were really not being your best self today. And, and then so like, you know, that was like the intro and you're like,

[00:15:15] okay, hey, maybe, you know, this, this bully has, has turned a new leaf and, and she's honest. It seems like she's honestly trying to help Carrie. She's honestly trying to give good feedback

[00:15:29] so that Carrie can reassess her life goals. And, and whenever she, the line, I need to remove myself from the situation. I was like, I've been there, been there. Like, I just can't help it. You're

[00:15:47] such an easy target. The my favorite lines by Rebecca were, okay, yes, Jen's a selfish bitch, but you're no better. You simpering fucking jellyfish. No, you know, I, we need to give her the benefits of the doubt. Oh my God, you tepid slut.

[00:16:08] I was like, oh, like she, she made me so happy for being someone being so angry. And your jumper is the ugliest fucking thing I've ever seen. It's your jumper. Yeah, I really enjoyed Rebecca and the, the actor and, and the performance and the character.

[00:16:28] I thought I was like, I could get down with Rebecca. Like I could, I could totally, I could totally like be like, oh, hey, let's go back and take a look at something when I was

[00:16:38] like 16. If you don't mind, like, I'm not embarrassed to see myself made, you know, humiliated, but maybe it wasn't as bad. Nope, it was just as bad as I thought it was. All right, cool.

[00:16:52] I don't think I would go back to high school if I had, if I had Rebecca's power, I think I would go back to my late 20s. That was a really good time. Well, with that, I don't think that it would be a matter of

[00:17:09] like where you would want to go. Like, yes, it'd be good to like be able to go back and almost like that Black Mirror episode, the history of you or history of everything or whatever, where you could have like perfect recall and you could relive memories. But like,

[00:17:25] I like the fact that she is using it to go back and like, you know, do growth, have growth for herself. Yeah, that's true. That's true. I still wouldn't go back to high school. Okay, fair enough.

[00:17:44] It was not my favorite time in my life. I loved Rebecca also. I thought she was a really great character. And I went back to my pretentious film school roots and thought about character

[00:17:58] archetypes. And what Rebecca is is a foil for Carrie, right? Rebecca is trying to be nice and Carrie is nice. Like she is niceness, right? That scene where they like trade their jumpers

[00:18:13] because both of them want to offer their sweater to the other person. It's like a chance for Carrie to look in a little bit of a mirror. Like what is it like when someone's just being so nice that

[00:18:22] you end up like wanting to step all over them? Right? Like that's a thing. And then and then she's actually not nice, right? Like underneath is the bitch is still in there.

[00:18:32] The honesty is still in there, right? Rebecca is still like she still has a sharp mouth. And that allows the audience to sort of see the difference between like sweetheart Angel Carrie and like somebody who's pretend nice. And then I was thinking about it and I was like,

[00:18:48] well, then Carrie is also a foil for Jen because she's like the opposite of Jen. Jen is so selfish and Carrie is so giving. Right? That they it makes sense that they would have

[00:19:03] been drawn together, right? Because a giver and a taker need to find each other. But obviously the balance is all out of whack in their relationship. And you know, Carrie kind of owes Rebecca a debt for the honesty of saying like Jen is a drama queen

[00:19:18] and you had to live in her shadow of like that was an act of service in a way. Oh, absolutely. That it was it was absolutely like, yes, it was a it was a it was a hey, look at what you're doing.

[00:19:33] Like, hey, I'm surprised you're still friends. Really? Why we live together? What are you talking about? Oh, you haven't seen it yet. You haven't realized what your life was for the past,

[00:19:45] you know, five years. Yeah. But yeah, that was it was it was hard because Carrie is, you know, our favorite or my favorite. But it was also like, oh, she's literally saying the exact same

[00:20:03] thing that we've been saying for, you know, five episodes. Yeah. Grow up. You tepid slut and you know, you're unworthy. Yeah, I hope she's gonna, you know, roll this over into her career and get

[00:20:20] like at least a real office and not have to sit next to a cabinet to eat her lunch. Like she has really valuable gift. Yeah, really wrong. Like you and somewhere that you feel it.

[00:20:34] Yeah, that was that was awful. Like, oh my god, because she wasn't even like, she didn't even have any space. She just was like wedge between you're right. It really it really upset me the file cabinet office. It really bothered me. I

[00:20:55] yeah, I didn't have anything more about foils. Oh, yes, I did. Uh, I think jizz lord is cash is foil. Right? Like, jizz lord like legitimately doesn't know what to do with his life because he doesn't know who he is.

[00:21:12] Cash meanwhile is just fucking self centered and lazy. But from the outside, they kind of look similar, right? Like each of them are about the same age and they're not going anywhere with their

[00:21:23] lives right now. But for very different reasons and the contrast makes each character more 3D. Right? Yeah, like so I would think of it or I think of it as in the point where

[00:21:37] jizz lord, well, I guess I'll start with cash cash acts like he knows more is more is better than what he is. He's faking it till he can make it. Whereas jizz lord is honest to God has embraced

[00:21:58] what he is or isn't and is accepting of it and well, he's afraid to find out who he used to be. I think he's okay with right who is now? Yeah, where he's that now he's he's embracing his life. He embraces the brush, the knowledge that he has.

[00:22:16] He uses it to the best of his ability and in cash basically has dreams of grandeur, illusions of grandeur with nothing to back it up. They don't go wrong like last week they both had acts of

[00:22:36] cowardice. Jizz lord walked out of the bar because he didn't want to stick around for the answer and cash walked out on his his powered group because he's a douche. Yeah, but yeah, I agree they're

[00:22:53] similar but with just different attitudes with regard to what they are. Yeah, if cash were any older than he is, I would have very little patience for him in any scenario. But they seem to

[00:23:07] be about 25 and I don't know a lot of people are still really lost at 25 and doing stupid stuff and being really juvenile. Right. Like I I don't think Carrie should like devote her life to him, but I don't think he's like a horrible person. He's just annoying.

[00:23:28] Yeah, I think he needs to get his shit together and yeah maybe go get a salary somewhere. Yeah, as much as I hate to say find a find a place to to actually focus your your thoughts in a

[00:23:43] in a field that you can actually accomplish something in whether it is being a tradesman, whether it is being an IT person, whether it is whatever it is cash. Just figure out step one.

[00:23:58] How are you going to pay the rent? How are you going to supplement your income? After that, then other things will start to fall as it is because I mean if you had a dream

[00:24:11] you know we'll just say acting for example, if he was like oh I want to be an actor and he moved towards that well being a superhero or a vigilante it's not a like I get it Batman can do

[00:24:26] it but Batman is also a rich kid. But you know being a superhero or a vigilante is not a you have to have a side job. You have to have a day job. Yeah well and he he I mean it's a flash in

[00:24:43] the pan idea that he just came up with after like barely defending Carrie from a mugger. Like it's a real shallow dream that he has right this isn't this isn't what he's wanted to do his whole

[00:24:56] life. He's wanted to do this for a week. Right. I guess we're probably gonna get some some backstory on cash right like maybe this is a turning point for him as well and and we'll

[00:25:08] get to see how he ended up like an entitled freeloader. Yeah yeah maybe we will we will see. We'll see. Is that it for your second point? Yeah okay so my second point I'm going to go to Andy.

[00:25:29] And Andy had like Andy was was one of the co-stars of this episode and by one of the co-MVPs and I feel very very badly for Andy not only because of you know she all she wanted was a power

[00:25:52] when she turned 18 and she got it and like Jen said you know your freakishly strong hands fucked you up like I like I think Jen said something to the effect of oh I always hoped your

[00:26:06] power would backfire on you so now she can't play the violin. She can't gently have sex with her girlfriend. She you know she pelvic fracture I mean so when I first when we first saw

[00:26:26] her girlfriend in the bathroom I was like oh okay so Andy's gay all right got it and oh her girlfriend is differently abled because she was wearing like the professor X type like stumping yeah yeah like the the the crutches that are like attached to your arms

[00:26:47] and and then you know eventually you realize that no she just can't walk because of their sexual uh avarice um and uh and which is you know obviously horrible for not only Andy but

[00:27:04] but for uh for her girlfriend do we ever get her name I don't remember I don't think so um but the uh the the abject terror that she has of telling her mom and anybody else about

[00:27:24] her uh not getting into the conservatoire and not basically her entire life she got her power and her power ruined her life she had all of these efforts and done all of this stuff in order to

[00:27:38] set herself up for the future and then in an instant uh it was it was gone um maybe not an instant maybe in like a week it was gone um her girlfriend broke up with her um her you know she

[00:27:54] smashed her violin that she spent years perfecting her play of and then her sister is excuse my language curse warning it is coming watch out Jen is a fucking cunt to her she is horrific

[00:28:14] to her and it is so hard for me to watch someone who I've been rooting for or just turned down such a dark alley um and uh and I'll get to Jen later on but

[00:28:33] like I really really thought that the actress um or actor actor uh was was great um she played let me one the like all of these the embarrassing things that Jenna had her do

[00:28:49] uh and then the finally you know hey Andy good for you you told your sister to go fuck herself by dedicating your award to her and did that's the best burn yeah it was it was fantastic it was it

[00:29:01] was it was something that I like I was like okay Jen you're crossing the line and he deserves some payback and it doesn't be wrong like if Jen doesn't go back on you know doesn't reveal all this

[00:29:13] stuff it's a toothless threat but um like you needed to do something but god like it was just so horrible to watch Andy suffer like that and then to go and then basically just to completely

[00:29:30] shut down her life and just yeah I felt really really bad for her and uh yeah even though she was kind of a you know a bitch to to Jen when she was getting her out of the trunk um you know like

[00:29:43] episode two like she's also a younger sister who they've probably always had this animosity my ex where my wife has three sisters and she has animosity towards at least a couple of them so

[00:29:57] I have three sisters and four brothers so I am somewhat of an expert on sibling relationships um when you have a lot of siblings it's different because there's like shifting alliances and teaming

[00:30:12] up on on other people and stuff but um I I mean I put the like 90 percent of the blame on their mother she plays favorites with her kids and she sort of pitted them against each other

[00:30:30] and so you know that's how their relationship evolved you learn from your parents how to treat your sibling um every siblings all siblings have rivalry that's healthy and normal but what Jen and Andy have is beyond a sibling rivalry it's like it's like serious animosity and it's because

[00:30:50] their mother like she sucks the mother sucks um she really annoyed me this episode uh I have to agree with you I thought Andy's storyline this episode was really moving um to see you know because

[00:31:08] it's easy to see her from Jen's perspective from the first couple of episodes right she's like spoiled and she's like thinks she's better than everybody else and but then you see she is deeply

[00:31:20] insecure and that like veneer of perfection is like her safety blanket and she lost it and she just crumbled and then you remember she's like seven she's 18 she's like a baby yeah she like

[00:31:37] at 18 if all of my life had come to a crash up above me well and and if thinking about when did it happen it happened when she got her power and what's Jen been looking for and like that's the

[00:31:54] line that Andy said uh about or I'm sorry not Andy uh that Carrie said about Jen with regard to I you know I think you don't even want to power it's just easier for you to be boo fucking who

[00:32:10] it's my fucking every the world is against me because I don't have a power and everybody else does well look what happened to your sister your sister got a power and it destroyed basically

[00:32:20] everything that she was she built up is that what you want to happen to you do you need is is that you do is that really the trade-off that it's worth it I get it you don't have

[00:32:32] anything you know you're a fuck up your high school dropout which I think maybe she mentioned before but I think she may have mentioned like that opening scene in the interview but I don't remember I didn't think that I realized that she had dropped out of school

[00:32:47] yeah I thought that was new information um that really bothered me because I'm a rule follower and a you know do what you're supposed to do person so yeah dropping out of

[00:33:01] high school like that's for bad kids right um the uh I wanted to mention the actor who plays Andy is Sophia Oakley Green uh just wanted to give her a little shout out because she was amazing

[00:33:17] this episode oh she especially enjoyed the family dance um that was unreal it was so she was good like has she been practicing it this whole time like she was good at the dance and um

[00:33:36] I thought it was so dumb that the mom was like oh yes oh the family dance like did she not remember that it was a little inappropriate yeah a little risque yeah it reminds me of um Little Miss Sunshine

[00:33:47] when she does the uh the striptease anyway um yeah Andy was she was uh amazing the actress was I mean the kid was just a kid she's a child yeah but she she was able to put put so much performance in

[00:34:09] nonverbal cues and uh in facial expression I was very very impressed she reminds me a little bit of Millie Bobby Brown something about her face yeah I could see that I can see that um it drives me

[00:34:26] crazy whenever I'm watching her on screen I'm like she looks so much like Millie Bobby Brown um I think the curly hair does something yeah to I mean she's real cute yeah uh

[00:34:43] yeah and the burn to Jen was you know I'm dedicating this award to people that have never achieved anything so yeah it's dedicated to my sister like so mean so mean and it was like okay

[00:34:57] there's the sharp wit that we know that Andy has right um but uh yeah she she called Jen's bluff which turned out not to be a bluff which ended up being worse for Jen than anybody else is what's

[00:35:14] the the idea that uh that the first abuse of any abuser is has been done to them so Jen felt wronged and you know at some point in the past by her sister who is seven or eight years younger than she is

[00:35:31] and probably more by her mother as you said uh and she's like you know what no she didn't do what I said so now she's got to pay the price and it is so horrific um

[00:35:48] and so mean spirited yeah disrespectful to the entire room right all those other people were there not to watch them to watch to watch their kids get awards get awards yeah and um and Jen just you

[00:36:04] know she just like happily stood on a chair and ruined it that didn't really understand why she needed to stand in the chair they're like what 40 people in that room everybody pay attention to me

[00:36:14] like just yeah it's the gen show it was the gen show absolutely yeah I definitely have known people like this uh and uh I spent a little time wondering if Jen is actually like narcissistic personality

[00:36:29] disorder and I think she's not like a diagnosable narcissist I think she's just a child who has never like had any kind of self-realization before and I'm hoping that this fight will

[00:36:45] sponsor some growth in her as well we can only hope because I want those two to be friends again I want them to be have a better relationship but I think that they they I think they work

[00:37:04] well together um and I also don't know where Jen's gonna live if she's not living with Kerry yeah because she works in a costume shop or whatever I know she can't make very much money

[00:37:16] right that's gotta be close to minimum wage right yeah and if she's showing up three hours late you know on a regular basis that's not great all right so what's your number three um world building we had some really fun world building

[00:37:34] this week um we saw a few more dumb powers there's Michael who seems to be able to levitate that's not that dumb that might be really cool there was a girl who was like levitating her like chewing gum

[00:37:48] I didn't really understand what that was about um the uh principal guy who who's super hearing is like a constant source of pain for him he has to wear those like gun range

[00:38:01] ear covers um and uh there was a girl Maisie Maisie Coates I think it's her name who um no Maisie Coates us she has like hair all over her face she looked like like um Michael J Fox and Teen Wolf

[00:38:15] oh right I was like Chewbacca yeah Michael J Fox and Teen Wolf absolutely oh and there were some really funny posters on the wall in the school uh there was one that said

[00:38:27] some people have visible farts that's just life and then another one said some people can see through walls that's just life and then it written in pen on the on that one was give them a

[00:38:39] separate bathroom and then we want privacy and I was like yeah I think that's fair that you don't want to yeah like yeah I'd say it's a reasonable request yeah um and that no powers are

[00:38:52] allowed on school premises like just seems like a reasonable thing to try to enforce but like you can't right we did see the guy uh the guy driving and driving flying out and arriving at

[00:39:05] the high school oh I missed that whatever it is he arrived in the air he like flooded down and like landed and he was like in like some sort of flying get up I missed that entirely I gotta

[00:39:20] go back and watch that I feel like he had like like flying goggles on awesome I mean if you're gonna fly you gotta wear goggles otherwise what's the point yeah no I get it um yeah I did think that

[00:39:34] the uh the levitating the gum I guess is telekinesis or like I was like oh she just doesn't want to put it on her finger which is kind of weird but all right now I'm just hanging out with gum

[00:39:47] away from my hand my finger whatever yeah I mean I don't like to touch chewing gum that's been chewed even in your mouth anyone's mouth don't want to touch it okay no I mean like other people I

[00:39:59] totally get but other world other world building stuff um I liked the new I really enjoyed the the the new uh background the new scenery the scenery a new location yeah um like did it

[00:40:22] it definitely like when they had that opening scene where you know Kerry wakes up from day dreaming and Jen's like like do you feel he has gone smaller like I I'm like you're like the picture is

[00:40:36] from the floor and it does look like they are like taller than the lockers and approaching the ceiling but I thought it was well shot yeah to give them that that feeling but uh yeah no the halls don't

[00:40:51] actually get smaller you just get bigger I guess we've grown up well maybe not Jen um I mean and then she punches Kerry like way harder than is really called for for the jinx yeah

[00:41:06] and then I don't know the that second thing she was like dead arm no takesy backsies and I was like what's that what's dead arm like that arms that is the punch the punch in the arm that's

[00:41:17] that was just jinx dead arm no takesy backsies like you can't hit me back yeah and then she runs off like like she's 11 yeah like she like Jen and that's my final point so I'll

[00:41:31] get to her but Jen is basically she never aged out of high school um that was where she stopped developing uh I'm assuming when she didn't get her power and she just stopped developing maturity wise yeah she just decided to be sorry for herself yeah and like basically

[00:41:54] well I'm not gonna advance if I don't have a power like everybody else so and nobody couldn't expect me to which was Kerry's point right like you just use not having a powers and excuse to be a shitty

[00:42:04] person right uh there's plenty of people that have powers that are dumb and they still have lives like yeah yeah it's Jen that different um yeah so I like you said I did enjoy the kind of like

[00:42:23] it's almost this is almost like a flashback episode but in the future or rather in the present I mean we did get a little bit of flashback with Kerry's memories oh yeah the uh the pregnancy

[00:42:36] test the pregnancy test well I you know sat on a toilet and I don't know if it was it was wet but I'd know if it was come or not and like oh you really don't know anything like you haven't had sex

[00:42:50] at yet I guess or she just wanted to be dramatic right like that's a good point she's she probably somebody else in school had a pregnancy scare and Jen was jealous so she cooked one up

[00:43:05] but not jealous and like I don't think that she might maybe she did but I would didn't think of it as like a as like an intentional like oh I'm going to make this up and so I know that I'm not pregnant

[00:43:20] whatever it was it's more like oh well what if this happened to me maybe I would be important if I was in fact pregnant and like I what are some things like the fact that the fact that Kerry

[00:43:33] it was like Jen you're not pregnant you said you were a virgin uh and Jen's like but I need your support I need I need you very vulnerable right now very vulnerable right now especially staring at that

[00:43:47] Jen Regan loves cock and then the the very end of it Jen Regan loves Kerry's cock yeah like that's the callback was was really entertaining it's like I I'm trouble believing that piece of graffiti is still on the bathroom stall right many years later but it's okay

[00:44:07] uh I really there were other scenes where there was like posters and stuff in the background and they weren't in focus and I was like I want to read them I bet they're all areas right yeah

[00:44:19] any public service announcements in a world like this have got to be good yeah from the viewpoint of people in a world not like that um is that all you had for your world building a world building

[00:44:34] yeah okay so I will reach my final point and you know kind of glued to it glued into it but I have spent four episodes rooting for Jen and rooting for her and hoping that things

[00:44:56] but she told us exactly who she was in the first two minutes of the first episode yeah and she you know when she had to be honest she was honest and we got a bunch of information that we didn't

[00:45:12] necessarily like we thought it was funny at the time but we didn't necessarily think we were gonna see it in action and holy shit did we see it in action in this episode yeah um I mean

[00:45:26] as you mentioned you know Mary her mom is I would say just as much to blame for uh making Jen the way that she is um but like you know she oh I told her that you could read minds told you Susan that you

[00:45:44] could read minds it was like are you fucking serious like that's something not yes sure it's impressive but it's also easy to fucking prove that that's what it is like like and then the

[00:45:58] the interactions and within the family the familial interactions um oh Carrie's giving a speech I'm getting an award what are you doing Jen I'm doing your dad he's given me a job and like Ian's like oh god

[00:46:13] no Mary I swear I never touched her I'm giving your dad blow jobs I was like what the fuck and then that led to yeah and then that that callback line I guess Jen was in a I'm fucking whoever

[00:46:28] is we're talking about later on oh maybe all fuck Susan it'll be the closest that I ever get to a loving mother I was like oh shit that hurt I was like oh that's truth like yeah the mother does suck

[00:46:43] like she's not wrong about that yeah I mean like so Mary said something to something like uh you know making up this ridiculous power is easier than explaining your whole situation

[00:46:56] and just like oh god now I get where Jen gets it it's yeah it was it's built into her and the drama I mean I don't know what it was like between Jen's dad and Jen's mom but I can't imagine that it was

[00:47:11] positive and it seems like Jen's dad died when Jen was still pretty young well I mean it would have had to have if if Mary remarried yeah remarried and had uh and had Andy within you know seven years

[00:47:35] seven or eight years unless they were divorced and then he and he's recently deceased it's we don't really know the whole story yeah I mean like maybe they've had a relationship through

[00:47:44] Kerry for a long time and that's awesome um but it's also a reason that you would need like Jen would need to hold on to Kerry because if Kerry is not willing to channel her dad like that's

[00:47:57] because it's not just a loss of Kerry it's the loss of that relationship with her dad which yeah honestly I didn't think about until right now but um to never be able to talk to your dad

[00:48:08] again because you got into a fight with the one person who could do that yeah and I feel like Jen deserves a little bit of defense um yeah she's a drama queen and what my friends and I used to

[00:48:22] call her merchant of chaos right she just like creates chaos wherever she goes but she also is spontaneous and lively and funny and I don't think that her and Kerry's relationship is completely about her using Kerry I think Kerry literally like legitimately enjoys Jen sometimes

[00:48:45] right Jen is fun but it's just that it's all out of whack and they need a major readjustment yeah I mean they definitely need to have a balance of power on the scales

[00:48:58] yeah and and Kerry needs to know that she is a badass bitch right like she is a lawyer and you know a distinguished alumni and Jen dropped out of high school like she needs to remember that

[00:49:17] she's kind of more of a grown-up and I don't know has her life more together than Jen's and not let Jen make so many decisions for her you know oh 100 yeah yeah so like another part of my

[00:49:33] point is is kind of what I talked about before as far as Jen not maturing past high school yeah um you know she still wants to go and like it reminds me of the movie can't hardly wait and uh

[00:49:45] trip mcneely who played by Jerry O'Connell who went off to college and then basically he's just longing for his high school high school days where he was actually a big fish in a little pond

[00:49:57] and you know she's just like well this is this is the best it'll ever get and that's like a horrible idea that you the best you ever were was in high school um and uh but so the and the immaturity of Jen's trade right or Jen's blackmail

[00:50:21] I'm gonna tell mom if you do this not are you hurting I mean she did say are you okay and then andy replied with yeah oh are you okay like who like you fucking care and Jen's like oh

[00:50:36] all right fine younger sister I'll take your fucking bait and I'll fucking go to town with it and like the the the idiocy of what she was trying to blackmail for yeah just just humiliation yeah just humiliation that's it like you're threatening to destroy a young girl's life

[00:50:59] maybe it's already destroyed but you're threatening to expose the destruction of a young girl's life in order to humiliate said young girl by making her say stupid things in a speech and do an embarrassing dance like it's juvenile this yeah absolutely juvenile is absolutely

[00:51:18] the right word for it and like this could have been a moment of support for andy but that's not Jen because she's kind of selfish and she's you know lazy and doesn't really focus on things and

[00:51:34] doesn't want to really do anything except for uh fuck off and uh yes oh yeah and fuck luke and then she then she played then at the very end uh when when kerry is like

[00:51:55] oh you know this was about me and you didn't let me talk and she's like I know i'm such a fuck up and and like she basically went back to playing the victim yeah um and and kerry called

[00:52:10] her on it which was fucking awesome i mean she did the exact same thing at graduation day or whatever they call it um whereas she's like oh mom thinks that i'm graduating i didn't tell her i dropped out

[00:52:21] it's kind of just where you're capping down oh i'm so i know i'm i'm such i'm such a fuck up like you you are oh hey i think i'm gonna get out of jail free card right like oh i'm such a fuck

[00:52:34] up all right you seem to know that you're a fuck up so treating everyone else like shit is okay like that's not how it works yeah i just like i got real fucking sick of jen and i don't know that i can

[00:52:48] continue to root for her which is a big shift from the first few episodes i think that that jen has a lot of growing up to do but i think she's capable of it if she gets a little

[00:53:05] distance from her family and listens to what kerry just said to her um i have been in the past uh a selfish douchebag at times and i have one really awesome friend who has on a couple of different

[00:53:22] occasions called me on my bullshit and it was difficult to hear i cried a lot but i changed my behavior and i'm grateful for the truth bomb that she gave me and jen could do the same thing

[00:53:39] that's great like that's that's fantastic those are the types of friends that you need yeah what what did we talk about last night not the hero you you want the hero you need

[00:53:50] that those are the friends you don't want but you need them because they're the ones who will actually help develop you and as long as you're willing to hear it and as long as you're willing

[00:54:00] to assess it um they will help you be a better person um so yeah that's absolutely uh i trust her with my life she's always honest all right rebecca she's not all right okay anymore

[00:54:26] that was so funny and but when they saw her in the hallway you know kerry looks out the door and she's like i think it's rebecca baxter and then um jen says rebecca personally gave

[00:54:39] eating disorders to half our year backster and then she's kerry's like my mouth is gone dry what if she makes me cry like you're right and then jen's like make yourself big and they were

[00:54:52] like ready to punch her when she came in the door um that was pretty hilarious i it gave me a real picture of how awful rebecca baxter must have been in high school right like like kerry's afraid of

[00:55:05] her like physically afraid yeah um so that was all i had jen being uh just the worst this episode congratulations cash you're no longer the worst this episode yeah um but uh how long does it take to

[00:55:26] lose the what did he call it the something of sadness the curse of sadness no the sting of the sting of sadness the sting of the sting of cowardness yeah um and uh and then um just lord goes

[00:55:40] uh so about five minutes yeah that was really good everything just lord does is like comedy gold and it just makes me love him more he's adorable uh yeah so do you have any notes i do have a few

[00:55:57] notes okay um i'll start with the stepfather was really cracking me up with his like emotion something yeah skill that isn't really clear and he gets confused in groups and and how he like

[00:56:13] reached out to that one kid and was like i'm here for you with his blindfold still on and the kids like get away from me weird old man did you see the finger that the the finger emotion like sensor

[00:56:25] that he was yeah there was like a beam or something coming out of his fingers because it went through the camera it went through the camera and the camera went blurry for a second yeah oh i didn't

[00:56:34] notice that it went blurry that's funny um but the whole the blindfolding thing and then he's like if i lose one sense the other senses get stronger like everything about it he's like i'm trained in

[00:56:45] mental health first aid and everything about it was just i thought it was hilarious and i thought that actor really carried it off quite well and i'm gonna look up his name is robby g

[00:56:59] and he was very funny he was very good um i'm just gonna ask what the fuck is gin wearing like these the the combat boots with the high high-waisted jeans and that are cuffed up to

[00:57:17] like high waters and i was just like like what are you wearing i just didn't understand her wardrobe is is often um odd like she has weird proportions that she seems to like and lots of

[00:57:37] color like just lots of colors all at the same time yeah like the outfit every time i saw her i was just like why what are you what are you like kerry looks normal like and you get dressed

[00:57:52] you're just like yep this is a good choice i'm not a fashion diva at all but even i was like what why um i uh followed a lot of the cast on instagram this week and

[00:58:10] luke rollison who plays just lord is a fashion diva there are a lot of pictures of him on instagram in really amazing colorful like out there pushing the edge outfits he's um a comedian and a physical

[00:58:30] comedian he does like really oddball stuff i would like to see some of it i couldn't find any videos yet and his instagram handle is luke rollison is a clown i think he might like actually be a clown

[00:58:46] like have clown training um like formal clown training he's he's really i i am quite smitten with him very nice i did really enjoy the line what are you some kind of weird kind of christian or something

[00:59:05] or are you dying okay jen these are the options she she was a bully in high school and now she's either a weird kind of christian or she's dying those are the reasons why she's nice

[00:59:19] like it really just kind of like that one line almost kind of focuses in on how closed off jen's worldview is yeah she's not open to people changing and yeah um yet uh jizz lord uh his his line

[00:59:38] about people yell at me for stuff for not knowing stuff then don't tell me anything yeah and and kash's response of penguins videos of penguins falling over and i was like oh he likes

[00:59:50] penguins and then it's the fact that he thinks penguins are stupid not stupid birds i'm just like oh yeah no you're maybe getting a little bit of pity and now i'm just like no no you lost

[01:00:02] to buddy you're you're still an entitled douche it's kind of amazing he's not a white man sorry no i'm taken so uh the i'll do anything you want ew not sex stuff oh gross no you said it in a really

[01:00:21] noncy tone well don't ever call me a nonce again for starters that was a pretty good exchange jen's line oh come on have a drink it's just sad if i make poor decisions on my own

[01:00:38] i might have to say that to somebody it's really funny it is a good one um well who's the father i don't know i'm gonna have to do mom mia in 18 years and i can't sing for shit

[01:00:53] that was it that was pretty good got their hair in the in the flashback in the memory was amazing and they both had like so much acne i was like i could feel the teenagerness it was

[01:01:06] really right it was great yeah um uh i think that that is you know we talked about that oh the the then carrie's picture that she actually did with the double thumbs off

[01:01:30] the fons and her face was so hard so sad i i'd like to meet carrie's parents that'd be interesting to see yeah definitely like how did she become such a people pleaser what's going on in her background right because she's clearly very smart and very capable

[01:01:54] yeah like well like even rebecca was like oh you're a fancy lawyer like why don't you have more friends and then you think about well maybe jen is kind of held her back there

[01:02:04] and that is disappointing and sad but they're still young carrie has time oh absolutely catch up to where she should be in life um and either cash will you know come through and develop into a real person or she's gonna have to kick him to the curb

[01:02:26] please repeatedly because he'll probably keep reversing time when she does it oh yeah absolutely all right you have any other notes uh i enjoyed the booze stash being still there um i was like oh

[01:02:41] i kind of wish i had hidden something in my high school that i could have gone back for later i would not have wanted to drink it drink it you know seven years later and which you actually

[01:02:51] couldn't handle the cigarettes and like yeah it was really she accidentally grabbed the dildo it was actually in the sex education box that was pretty good good stuff all right that's all my stuff yeah all right well let's go it's time for a break we'll

[01:03:07] be back stay with us and we're back uh moving on into extraordinary news pennie i found an interview with sophia oxenham our beloved carrie in 1883 magazine and the interviews by dana rebeau

[01:03:36] were uh i just took some excerpts that were about uh this particular show the article was much longer and it covered more of like uh sophia's childhood and she went to royal academy of dramatic

[01:03:50] arts in london and some stuff like that in another show she was on called pole dark that i also have not seen um but these are uh these sections are about extraordinary the article is worth checking out

[01:04:03] because the photography that accompanies it is absolutely gorgeous of sophia oxenham and it really made me see her in a whole new light i was like oh she's not always dorky carrie like

[01:04:15] it's it right yeah it's kind of amazing so you want to ask the questions yep oh absolutely um so sophia what's the piece of advice that you give to carrie i would tell her to have more

[01:04:29] confidence in herself to trust that her gut is right and not to be afraid of standing up for herself and saying what she thinks or believes i think she has some people pleasing tendencies she thinks

[01:04:40] that in the end that will make everyone much happier but actually that can cause more problems later on i'd say just say what you think and try and be as direct as you can she struggles

[01:04:51] with that which i think is quite normal thing for people that people go through at different times some people definitely don't but it's quite a normal stage and the early 20s is where you want to please

[01:05:01] everyone around you don't you circling back to the series uh what do you hope audiences take away sometimes the world can be a dark place and there's a lot going on and it can become overwhelming

[01:05:15] and stressful i hope that it sparks some joy in people's life i hope it makes them laugh i know that my favorite comedies have done that for me when i've been feeling low or going through

[01:05:25] a bad patch they've comforted me so i hope extraordinary does that for someone even just one person that would be amazing i hope they take away the message that you don't need to have a thing to make you

[01:05:36] feel complete sometimes a lot of the joy in life comes from the small things amen sister i love that answer can you talk about carrie's journey journey throughout the series without spoiling too much she goes through quite a lot from the beginning of the series to the end

[01:05:52] of the series she becomes a very different person she grows a lot she starts to understand herself better and understands her wants and needs and gets better at kind of putting them into place she starts creating some boundaries healthy boundaries for everyone around her including

[01:06:07] herself yeah i i want to go read this article um that was my fault last week we had the article that was super spoilery that i didn't put into show notes um we'll make sure to include this

[01:06:19] one and i'll go back and add the other one if you guys want to go check that out thanks greg all right we got some feedback from our repeat feedbacker uh tiff and tivo thank you for the

[01:06:31] pronunciation uh regarding episode four as soon as the dog left i knew i flinched and i laughed love the humor of the show by the way the music from last episode you were referencing is

[01:06:44] chased long by wet leg british band that fits the series universe so well it's a must in our car at the moment that's awesome thank you tiffen also uh posted a link to a playlist of all the music

[01:06:59] that's in the extraordinary series so we should link that in the show notes as well it's a great playlist i was listening to it earlier the music in the show is fun uh yeah so mona trawl wrote in

[01:07:13] and i think this is the first time we're hearing from mona hello penny and greg i love having you guys back together podcasting i was a loyal she-hulk cast follower thank you thank you that's awesome

[01:07:24] we loved she-hulk uh this show is great totally binge worthy but i'm staying strong and going week to week with you awesome while there were some funny moments in this episode like jen saying

[01:07:35] i was having a really quiet poo yeah that was good and jiz lord bringing out the cat brush to help cash i finished this episode conflicted and wondering is jen really awful i've definitely

[01:07:47] had a few yeah it's i mean yeah it was rough uh i've definitely had a few gens in my life i'm glad carry stood up for herself somewhat that girl is so sweet i appreciate the portrayal

[01:08:00] of superpowers not being so super seeing the ugly side of having a power makes me think that i would totally be okay if i didn't get a power anyway i wanted to say that i like the storyline

[01:08:11] format for this podcast because you aren't doing a scene by break scene by scene breakdown but injecting your own thoughts and anecdotes keep up the awesome job thanks mona we're sorry that we changed it up again this one yeah we'll probably be back to storylines next week

[01:08:26] um write in again or call in we love voicemails speaking of which we have a voicemail from our friend jade my co-host over at murder magnets hey guys oh my gosh this episode was so good oh this

[01:08:43] show is just getting better and better it was a deep episode too you know i really liked it i loved that we got this look into the past with jen and carry and this like backstory and the conflict

[01:08:55] coming to a head oh it was so heartbreaking but so good um i thought it was really i mean this episode was not a good look for jen at all this was like the selfishness episode for sure

[01:09:06] but the fact that her mom lied about her having a superpower it did make me feel kind of sorry for her because that's gotta make jen feel like she's just not good enough and uh i was like mom

[01:09:17] that no not good and i want to know what you guys think of the parents because i don't know they just don't maybe it's the acting i don't know they they're not funny to me the parents stuff

[01:09:29] it feels weirdly like forced and like scripted or something maybe maybe it's just me i want to know what you guys think about the parents though yeah this really showed the difference between

[01:09:39] jen and carry like what would make this evening go from unbearable to just about bearable and carry her answer humility and the support of good friends like oh okay and she's so sweet close

[01:09:52] getting shit-faced like out there like that's jen and carry right there kind of the difference and you see how carry you know kind of goes along with jen and like that bully girl says like kind of

[01:10:03] lives in her shadow and like follows jen around and it's like why why are you doing this carry you know i also what are they drinking what is that blue awful looking liquid is that hypnotic

[01:10:14] because the blueness and the reaction that jen made when she took a sip of it it looked really gross and i'm like yeah it's probably probably like years old hypnotic i was like in like a

[01:10:25] plastic bottle oh it's just so gross and then you know carry's response to the drink is like no no i should stay sharp for my speech and it's a week night and then you know jen as soon as she

[01:10:39] encounters the bully her first instinct is like to extort them money you could give us money it's like yep there is jen such a little little hustler you know but yeah i really hated seeing

[01:10:51] jen and carry fight but it was necessary you know and gosh uh myriad tires and sofia oxenham especially sofia oxenham this girl is just killing it oh she nailed it um when she said that jen

[01:11:05] you know really doesn't want to power deep down because it gives you an excuse to be a shitty person because the world is mean to you you know it's like she's afraid to try and put herself

[01:11:13] out there and i found jen her whole struggle i do find as horrible as jen is i find her to be really relatable because she especially reminds me of myself when i was younger and

[01:11:25] i'm just like man i it's just a really great example of seeing how i don't want to be you know but it's you know very relatable feeling of insecurity that you'll be inadequate if you

[01:11:37] actually put yourself out there to try so i don't know i did see a lot of you know jen's vulnerability and i felt for her but at the same time i was really really happy that carry

[01:11:49] found her voice because cash i really hope she's coming for you next man cash is just god what a selfish prick get out of jizz lord's bed you selfish asshole oh i hope that seeing those

[01:12:03] comments on youtube like wakes him up because he needs to learn his freaking lesson already or carry needs to kick him to the curb something's got to give with cash because i like i want to

[01:12:13] like him but there's no i can't there's nothing good there but i have a feeling now that carry has found her voice cash his days are numbered so look out cash hopefully i really hope maybe i'll
