It’s the return of Pamela and Jason Voorhees! Get ready to… sympathize? This series is full of surprises, including a lot of dark humor, character drama, and even warmth. And of course, some gnarly gore. If you’re reading this and you haven’t watched it yet, give it a shot! I think if you liked The Walking Dead, a show that turned what’s usually straight-up horror into something with character and depth, then there’s a good chance you’ll get into this one too. For one thing, Linda Cardellini is fantastic as the newly multifaceted Pam Voorhees. And then join me, Jayme, and Nathan as we talk it out!

[00:00:00] Hmm? Ah! Hmm. Podcasting Drone!
[00:01:04] Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast. I'm Jason. And I'm Jamie. And I'm Nathan. And this is The Walking Dead Cast Episode 724. And this episode we're covering the first two episodes of the new Friday the 13th related series, Crystal Lake, available now on Peacock. Here we are! It's actually here! Yay! Yay! I believe it now. I mean, it hasn't come on TV yet as we're recording.
[00:01:34] But we've seen it. So it exists. We've seen it. It's real. And I believe in it now. I believe. Yeah, so it's, uh, if, I'm not sure if we actually have the titles right, but when I have our Crystal Lake Season 1 Episode 1 and 2, The Great Pretender and Are You Experienced? And before we get into our analysis of it, what did you guys think of it? I think it felt like a homecoming of sorts.
[00:02:01] It simultaneously felt new but familiar at the same time. And, you know, much like a camper swimming in Crystal Lake, we've been holding our breath for a while. Uh, you know, wondering how this show would be compared to our expectations. Uh, wondering if it would capture the feel we were hoping for. And so far for me, it has. Awesome. Jamie?
[00:02:29] I am not sure yet. Mm-hmm. I thought you might say that. I want to see a little bit more where things go. And I, like, the first episode I feel, or the first half of the first episode I felt, like, felt like Crystal Lake. And then the rest of it didn't feel like Friday the 13th to me so far. Mm-hmm. I'm not saying I don't like it yet. I'm still undecided. Mm-hmm. It just, it doesn't feel like Crystal Lake to me. Yeah.
[00:02:59] To me, I really liked it a lot. But I, you know, we didn't, I didn't know what to expect. I heard it described as a 70s paranoid thriller. I knew it was a prequel series of sorts. They've changed a few things, but we're getting kind of like Pamela Voorhees' backstory. And so I figured they would have to flesh out her character, of course. And as a piece of television, I think it's great.
[00:03:29] There's a lot for me to dig into. It's like some shows that I've been covering recently, I haven't connected with right away. It's taken me a while. This one, right away. I'm totally into it. I feel the emotion of it. I feel like it has heart, you know, and I kind of understand, I think, what they're trying to do. And there's some mysteries that are intriguing. But I, just thinking of it from the perspective of, because I'm not a super fan of Friday the 13th. What would a super fan think?
[00:03:58] And I'm like, well, it feels pretty tame so far. There is some intense gore, but it's mostly, yeah. It's mostly more of a, I mean, it almost like there's a sweetness to it a lot of the times. And there's a heart to it. And there's funny, it's like small town charm kind of a thing going on. And not just like, ah, here's a small town that you can tell they're all going to be victims.
[00:04:25] It actually feels like, oh, charming, almost not quite sitcom, but close characters. So, um, I think it's great, but I do wonder, yeah, what, um, a lot, I mean, Nathan's also a Friday the 13th fan. So we have one right here just said he liked it, but I do wonder about whether, uh, Friday the 13th fans might feel like it's a bit tame.
[00:04:49] I do also wonder if it's like the difference between like a Romero zombie movie and the walking dead, because a Romero zombie movie, you kind of aren't necessarily meant to fall in love with the characters. They're kind of fodder, but I mean, that's not totally true, but more than like the walking dead where you just feel so connected to the characters, you know, but then the difference is with this one, you're feeling connected to the characters. Who are going to go on to be the slasher, the, the, the killers.
[00:05:19] Yeah. Which I think is really interesting. I mean, I'm intrigued. I like the characters. I like it as a show. I just don't know that. I feel that it's Friday the 13th yet. And I was getting more of like an adult stranger things vibe than a Friday the 13th vibe. Did you watch welcome to dairy? Yeah. Brad Caleb Kane, who's the showrunner was one of the head writers and possibly co-showrunners of that.
[00:05:46] And I felt a similarity with this and that as far as the tone went. Yeah. You know, it had a, um, it had a heart to it, but, uh, what if it's not, what if it just stays like this, but it's good? I mean, I'll be happy that it's good. I mean, I've got something with a Friday the 13th title. So should we do episode by episode? I think that'd probably be good, right? Yeah. I think that makes sense. Cover one and then cover two. All right. Let's get into number one.
[00:06:15] Do you want to go first, Nathan? Yeah. Let's. Well, actually, I have one quick question before we get into it. Yeah. What, when is this supposed to be taking place? Cause there's like 72. Cause like the math on the town thing didn't match up. What town thing? Um, the founding or something. The founding, the founder's day parade or the founder's day party. And then, okay. 72 is what it's supposed to be.
[00:06:43] Cause I figured like three different years based on stuff going on and watching this show. Well, so the guy in the second episode, um, Werner Erhard guy, what's his name? Richter. Somebody Richter. He says 72. The leader of the seminars. He said 72. So I figured that was it. And then I was like, aha, I caught you in a mistake because they showed an episode of three's company at the beginning. So then I researched it and it's not three's company. It's called the Don Not Show, which is some variety show that I did the same thing.
[00:07:14] So I think it's supposed to be 72. I checked the song, some of the songs too. Um, and I called the phone number. Um, oh, I was going to call the number and I didn't, I ended up not doing it. I think it got distracted. It didn't connect to anything. Maybe it will once the show comes on. Oh, good point. It's actually on. Yeah. Um, yeah. But like if you did like the founder's day thing, I think you got 1968 if or 79. Why did I say 77? Yeah. I got 1968 unless I did my math wrong, which is always possible. I hope you did.
[00:07:44] Cause I want to believe that they covered their bases, but who knows? All right. So if we're, we're supposed to be 72, which is still years off of the original movie. Yeah. This all happened in like 56, 57. Yeah. People who don't know the first movie, uh, Jason dies in 57. Dies in 57. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:08:07] And then, uh, Pamela gets killed in 58, 58, but then the camp closes and then it reopens in 1980. And that's really when most of the movie takes place. So there's a big gap in between. Um, but I feel like they wanted to compress that down just cause they're exploring Pamela Voorhees psychology and they wanted it all to be fresh for her, you know, not something many years later. I mean, they could have just had it all take place in the fifties, but then it wouldn't have matched the movie then either.
[00:08:37] Yeah. And I'm not faulting it. I mean, I watched the Simpsons. They retcon their backstory every couple of years. So I'm okay with it. Like, I'm not, I'm not mad about it. I'm just trying to get my head wrapped around where we're at. Maggie's still a baby 35 years later. Yeah. And like, you know, at first they met in like the sixties when the show was on in the eighties and then they met in the seventies and then they met like, you know, they had a nineties meeting, you know, fall in love thing. That's cool. Yeah. All right. Now, Nathan, you're up.
[00:09:07] So the show runner, as we were talking about Brad, Caleb gain, he did offer some explanation for the timeline. He said, well, as we know from watching the first movie that takes place in 57 and jumps forward. Um, and this starts in 71 and then it becomes 72 after Jason drowns.
[00:09:31] So Caleb Kane said the adjustment was to make the show and the atmosphere and some of the pop culture references to feel in line with what audiences had experienced with the original film. So what I can see for that, for those purposes, the show is in a different timeline than the first movie, but events will probably play out the same, at least the big events. That's what the different timestamp. I don't really mind.
[00:10:00] And I, I love the seventies vibe of it. I just think it's really fun. Yeah. Agreed. And the clothes and the, the brownness of everything. And I thought we could do just a little table setting and kind of see some other things that may compare to the original, some throwbacks. Like they kept that the Christie's own the crystal lake cabins.
[00:10:30] And we see Steve returns much younger, Steve Christie. There's a snake in one of the, I think in the kitchen, is it? Yep. That felt kind of like a throwback to the first movie when there's a snake in one of the cabins that they have to get rid of. But this one doesn't get killed. So redemption for the snake. That's right. I wondered if, because they made it seem like she did kill it.
[00:10:54] She held up the chef's knife and then later revealed how she just captured it. But I wondered if the idea was to suggest, oh, look, she can handle snakes just to sort of connect with when she puts the snake in the cabin later. Yeah. But it's a, it's a kinder time in her life now. So she doesn't kill it. Barry and Claudette are the two teens who are fooling around in the shed.
[00:11:23] That's the same names as the kids in the opening of the movie. The first kills in the, in the first movie. Oh, okay. In the fifties. Yeah. Mm-hmm. And there's a few background characters so far. Like Levon calls out to somebody named Enos. And that's the truck driver from the first movie that gives Annie a ride. Oh. Or at least it's the same name. I assume it's probably the same guy. I'm sure.
[00:11:52] And, um, one of the officers, I think officer Dorf is the officer that comes to check on the campers in the first movie as well. On his motorcycle. Yeah. I think it's that guy. So that's Levon Brooks partner, right? That's Dorf. Dorf. And he, uh, had a fling with Rita apparently at some point. I think a lot of people in town have. You get that sense. Nope. No judgment.
[00:12:23] And, uh, the last one I'll mention, I buried the lead. Our man is back. Crazy. Ralph. This time. No bucket hat yet. Unmarried. It seems. Seemingly. I mean, we were talking about crazy Ralph. Like, yeah, they all seem afraid of him or weirded out by him, but everything he's saying is true. And now in this show, it's like, okay, now you're giving me some reasons to worry, dude,
[00:12:54] which is cool. I think that's great. Yeah. Do we think he has, like, he's given off like PTSD. Yeah. Post military vibes. Yeah. Yeah. He's wearing his military outfit later talking about my, uh, landmines and stuff. Yeah. The landmines was when I was like, okay, that's where we're going with him. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. He kind of seems more grounded in the show so far. I think in the movie, he almost comes off kind of, how would you say?
[00:13:22] I think there's a reverse in the movies. He acts crazier than the content of what he's saying. And in the show, he acts sane, but he's clearly troubled. Yeah. Just by what he's saying, you know? I think it's in the performance. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. And I like that he's still a harbinger. Like he's telling us there's something in these woods. Yeah. That we've got to be careful of. He's setting tracks.
[00:13:51] There were two other, kind of three, but two other things I picked up on that were similar from. So the opening scene is the first movie, but the Friday the 13th crap, you know, coming at you and crashing with the girl ass shattering, but they added some blood to it. But it says Crystal Lake. But it says Crystal Lake instead of Friday the 13th. But it's the same exact, the same style of writing. It comes through the same way.
[00:14:16] And then at one point, Pam is wearing that sweater that she's, that ends up, you know, being in the second movie. Oh, and then she's wearing when she gets killed too. But the one that, that what's her name? Ginny puts on. Ginny puts on. Yeah. But she was totally, I mean, it wasn't exactly, exactly, but it was definitely that sweater. I was like, and then, you know, Jason with the machete. Yeah.
[00:14:47] These woods are mine. I just love that. We're talking about little Jason and it's so, it's such a great scene because it's, he's unpacking all this camping gear and it seems really sweet and fun. But it's also like setting the stage for, cause it's a book about nature survival and it's like his tools of the trade and his machete. And it's like the sweet version of what's going to be happening later. Yeah.
[00:15:17] I really, really liked that part. Like I was, I was waiting in with that part. A couple of things, nods to the movie. Well, Pamela's a cook, you know, we got to see her in action just like she said she was. And like, like Annie was going to be. Now this one, I'm not sure I wanted to ask you guys. So I loved when Rita was reading this muddy novel in the diner with the pea fantasy. I loved that too. I love her. She cried. It's beautiful. Bathe me in it.
[00:15:47] If that's what she wants. I thought, who am I to say to know, to say no. And this guy's like, take that Shakespeare. I feel like this happens daily in the diner. Like she just comes in and reads smut to everybody. I know. But that was that the diner where Annie got the ride from the truck driver. I think it's supposed to be the Blairstown diner. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Cause it just feels like a place where people in town hang out and chat and it's kind of nice.
[00:16:17] And then, um, of course, I mean, this is, I feel like we're focusing in on this episode, but if we mentioned the other one, sometimes it's okay. People hopefully saw both, but, um, episode two starts with Pam on the lake and then reaching down, seeing Jason swimming up. But then the big monster Jake, uh, Jason attacks her from the other side of the boat, just right out of the end of the first movie. And it was a dream. Like, like I think it was then. And then also she has a Jeep, but it's a lighter color.
[00:16:47] Yeah. It kind of seems like the same design. Yeah. Maybe she'll paint it later or something to match her mood. And I think they did. Um, we were, we said in our last episode, they shot at a different lake, but I think that it is the same town, uh, street. Yeah. Yeah. They did a great job of at least to a non super fan like me, making it feel like the same place, the camp. And you said it was the same town.
[00:17:16] So I guess it was easier to do that, but it really felt like having come off of watching the two movies just now, it felt like the same. Yeah. Jamie, what do you want to talk about first? Um, let's talk about Jason. Let's talk about, let's talk about our boy. Cause he has a boy right now. He's so cute. He's adorable. Well, but also the very first jump scare is him, which I thought was appropriate.
[00:17:47] Absolutely. Like she turns off the TV and then all of a sudden he's there. And I mean, the number of times my kids have spooked me just being there. Yeah. Because you're wondering what is this show going to be? And it first starts off with her all bloody with a tooth in her hand and bed in her hands. And we're like, Oh, this is just going to be pure blood the whole time. And then they cut to nine months earlier and she's watching her show and you hear, and then huge vibe shift. Yeah. Right there.
[00:18:17] When she was all bloody, I thought we were seeing what we know to be the end. Kind of. Hmm. Like I thought we were seeing the aftermath of the first, like towards the end of the first movie, but that's not what we saw. They probably thought we might think that. Which, fair. I like that they tricked us a little bit, but yeah, Jason, he's, he's a sweet kid. He wants to be normal like every other kid. And his head is obviously not.
[00:18:43] And he has seizures and we don't know exactly what's wrong with him, but she takes him to the camp. Cause she's got to keep an eye on him. Now, my question is like, he's like, I don't want to go back because they all look at me. Has he not been going to school? Cause he's definitely like 10, 11. Yeah. I don't know. Maybe he's homeschooled. Or is it just that me or everybody in the town seems to really care about him. And there's just some kids from out of town who are at camp who are jerks.
[00:19:10] I mean, I don't know what, what are you getting at that? You just think what didn't make sense. It was the whole, like, you know, they're staring at me and they're talking about me. I'm like, does he not go to school? Like, that's just what struck out to me is like, is this his first time out in public? Uh, I mean, when I went to school, there were kids throughout elementary.
[00:19:36] There was usually one kid who people teased and I'm sure they didn't want to come to school. That was elementary school, you know? But this is camp. Like he's talking about not going to the camp. But it's the difference. You don't want to go to a place where everybody's being a bully. Yeah. But it's just, I don't know. It just felt, and I don't know that we're going to get this answer. It was just a question that popped on my head. Like, does he go to school?
[00:20:01] Because like I said, the town, like when we hit the town, you know, the Founder's Day thing later, and now granted it's, he's dead. So you don't speak ill of the dead, but everybody seemed sweet. You know, seemed to like Jason. Even the one guy in the diner was like real sweet kid, tough to look at, but sweet kid. Well, kids are cruel. Kids are cruel. Yeah. I mean, adults would be a little nicer, but kids are super cruel, especially at that age.
[00:20:29] Everybody seemed to know him and like him and his mom. Like they seem like they're pictures of the town and cared about. And we've got Grace, his little friend, his friend. Yeah. That was nice. She sticks up for him. I mean, I just coming into it with that fake out complete with Kiki. And then it's just this cute. I, I, I, I almost laughed. He's so adorable.
[00:20:59] And I just knew right away. Okay. They're humanizing Jason and Pamela and they're making us understand why. I mean, of course it's, it's a mother who cares about her son, but now we feel it, you know, we just knew it before, but now we feel the bond that they had. So it feels more like a tragedy the way that Jason died.
[00:21:24] And we get to sort of viscerally understand Pamela's frustration about the whole thing. Before it was just like, oh, this poor woman. But now you're just like, oh, it's so horrible. You know, mommy, why am I like this? That broke my heart. Poor kid. Hey, look on the bright side. At least this kid eventually is going to space. That's true. Silver lining. I want to go to space.
[00:21:54] So I, I just, I mean, if you were sort of going to guess how this show would be, I would have probably guessed it, but to actually witness it and they just did it so well, made their relationship so sweet. And, um, I enjoyed it. I'm a sucker too. If anyone's listening to me podcast, they'll know anytime there's like a parent child thing like that, it gets me. Same. But I, I think he has what's called hydrocephalus,
[00:22:21] which is an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid that can enlarge the head and, uh, sometimes can cause seizures. But I read that facial deformation isn't really a medically realistic depiction, but they're just. Most of his face itself is pretty okay. It's mostly his head. That's all. I guess you're right. Yeah. Messed up. Did you think that the drowning scene would happen in the pilot? No. No.
[00:22:51] I was surprised. That, yeah, I thought that was going to happen much later. Yeah. As it was, cause we're going to, Oh, we're seeing the camp and then, Oh my God, this really seems like they're setting it up. Is it already coming this early? Yeah. I was like, they're, they're faking us out. They're faking us. Oh, they didn't fake us out. And why is mom the only one swimming after him? There's a hundred people watching. I guarantee you most of those counselors have lifeguarding. Yeah. Training. Like. Um, so.
[00:23:18] So I, uh, just talking about the introduction to them and how they're so sweet and has so much heart. And then it's interesting to think about that in terms of what we know they're going to become. Um, and it's two psycho killers. And we're going to wonder how Pamela gets from this person to stalking and killing teens. And it made me wonder, cause I'm sure a lot of people will watch this who didn't watch the movies.
[00:23:46] And I bet you they'll watch this and then maybe go, well, I'll try the movie. And they'll just think of it in a totally different way. You know, if you watch this first. You do that. Yeah. There's some people who do that. That's a weird thought. Okay. I want to talk. I want to go into the drowning since we guys are talking about it. So I loved the depiction of the camp and I'm not used to seeing it full of kids. Uh, I think we did in one of the later movies, number six, maybe Jason lives.
[00:24:16] Yep. Yeah. But, um, it reminded me of meatballs, that old Bill Murray movie. And, uh, for people who don't know, um, they couldn't film it at the same place because that place doesn't allow filming anymore, even though it's still a camp camp. No be both. Go. It's a boy scout camp, boy scout camp, but they used a different New Jersey camp camp. Oh, Oklahoma.
[00:24:43] Um, so then just seeing the kids bullying him, of course is infuriating. And then this girl, Grace, you mentioned it was nice that he had a friend and then counselor Claudette and belly, uh, Barry belly fooling around in the boathouse. And so that's another reason probably why we didn't think this was it because they always show it at night when he drowns. Right. In the flashbacks, it seems like it's nighttime. It's dark. Yeah.
[00:25:14] But then when they start fooling around and you're like, well, that's what Pamela always said, you were not paying attention. You were making love. And so it felt like this was it. And then, um, the adults send all the kids inside, but Jason stays out there and grace, grace hears them that we'll talk about that later, but that seems significant. And then I guess he went to get the ball that we didn't see it and drowned. And Pamela hears him scream. That was a really, um, intense scene.
[00:25:41] And Jason, and yeah, I was just really surprised that it happened so quickly and kind of surprised that she doesn't know yet that, um, the count. I don't think she knows that the counselor who was supposed to be there wasn't there and that they were fooling around. I think that's why they had grace find this out because she's going to find out from grace at some point seems like, yeah.
[00:26:11] And then she's going to get really pissed off about it. Yeah. Cause wasn't that the implication was that everybody left the lake and they wouldn't necessarily think Jason was out there by himself. Yeah. I don't understand why they didn't do a headcount. Like everybody left. Jason decides to go get this ball instead of, well, cause his friend grace might get kicked out is what he thinks. I mean, it's kid logic. It makes sense in kid logic. Yeah.
[00:26:42] Um, that was, that was another thing that made me kind of feel really bad for him is, you know, when you think about the drowning, you probably imagine it's cause some kids, you know, bullied him or pushed him in and he couldn't swim or something. I feel like that's in one of the movies. Maybe Freddie versus Jason. I think that, yeah, it's in Freddie versus Jason. That's what happens in Freddie versus Jason. That's right. Yeah.
[00:27:07] And at least in this one, he drowns from trying to help the only person or the only other camper at camp. That's nice to him. Yeah. I like grace. Mm hmm. Yeah. Yeah. I'm curious about her because, well, we just met her, but it feels like they're trying, they're going somewhere with her, but she's an outcast sort of like him. Um, it's interesting to me that she, I guess this is more in the second episode, but she's
[00:27:36] younger than the girls that she wants to be included with. But she heard one of them having sex and then she's in the bathroom stall and sees all the, uh, nasty graffiti. And it just reminds you of the themes of sex that are so in your face in the movies. And then she puts on the lipstick and wants to go and then gets kicked out by the mean girl and throws her clogs on the ground. And, and, um, I'm like, okay, where are they going with this? I don't, I don't really know.
[00:28:05] You know, I, I, there, it feels like it's building to something, but I don't know. Yeah. I'm curious what were they going to do with, with grace? Mm hmm. I I'm actually worried for her. I don't know. Cause Pam, I mean, right now what we know between the movies and the show, Pam and Jason are killers. Mm hmm. They're not going to hurt grace.
[00:28:33] When grace, this is in the second episode too, but when she comes up and wants to give the friendship bracelet that Jason made her to Pamela and she goes, Jason made this for me. I don't want to give it to you. And Pamela goes, you don't want it. And I felt a little like menace in there. Like what? Like, I don't know, maybe I'm reading into it, but it was almost like, what are you just giving it away because you don't like him or something? And then she goes, no, no, no, I do want it. But I just wanted you to have it. And then it turned nice, you know? Oh no, no. It's you.
[00:29:02] You keep it honey. Yeah. I think she was worried that what you don't care about my son. Yeah. Yeah. Like it was one of those things. Like, yeah. That's what I thought too. Yeah. I'm going to kill you. No, I'm just kidding. But maybe if she finds out that he was getting her ball, he might, she might get mad at her. You're probably right, but I'm just, I don't know what to think. Yeah. I'm just going with what we've got right now.
[00:29:29] I'm not worried about her with our killers. Now being bullied at school and that kind of stuff is a different story. Right. Yeah. Jason might just want to like take her out to the woods and take a walk or something. Catch up. Okay. Where are we? I think we're at Nathan. Yeah. Nathan. Yeah. Let's talk about Pam.
[00:29:52] So first, a podcast, a tie in Brad, Caleb Kane said when he was writing the pilot, he had Linda Cardellini in mind because of her performance in dead to me on Netflix. Oh, I didn't know that. Thought that was interesting. So we have just in case you know, uh, dead to me as a show on Netflix with Linda Cardellini, Christina Applegate.
[00:30:18] It's kind of a, um, mystery, uh, black comedy, I would say. And, um, she, it was really good and it was, um, it'll make you cry by the end though. So be warned. But, um, we did a podcast called dead to us, me and Jade and Penny. And that's on podcast.co.com. If anybody cares. It was great. Thanks. There, um, you know, Pam and Jason are, they're so attached at the hip.
[00:30:48] You can see how she'll eventually take on his identity as kind of part of herself, maybe as a coping mechanism for the loss of this person that's always by her side. And I was wondering after the drowning, there's a nine month time jump. And I don't know if that's possibly a commentary, you know, like it takes nine months for a baby to come to term. I thought that same thing. Yeah.
[00:31:17] I was like nine months isn't, has to be a specific choice. Yeah. I thought maybe it was some mother son symbolism in some way. Like for him to be reborn as a resident in her psyche or something like that. Yeah. Something like that. After that time jump, she kind of feels detached. Like, or like maybe her neighbors don't take your pain seriously.
[00:31:40] Cause when the Christie's want to reopen the lake after Jason's drowning, she feels, it seems like she feels disrespected. Almost like it's a shrine that's being disturbed in a way, the place that she goes to and stares at the water every day. Um, and when the kids, when, uh, Barry and Claudette offer to do something in Jason's memory, it feels to me at least very performative.
[00:32:09] Like they didn't seem to care too much when he was still alive. They were disinterested counselors and it kind of feels like they're pretending to care now, or at least maybe that's the vibe that she's picking up on. Yeah. I think you're right. Maybe they care some, but not as much as she thinks they should. Claudette said she, I mean, Barry said, wait, I thought you hated the kid. She's like, I do, but I don't want to do the other job that I have to do. Like this is my last chance at a job.
[00:32:38] I kind of sort of like, which allows me to get laid and get paid. But I think even if you felt like that, you know, like if I was a teacher and I, well, this is, I shouldn't put this on myself, but if I was like annoyed by one certain kid and then he died, I'd feel bad. But I think you're right. I think she, from Pamela's point of view, they, you know, I mean, I think they care the way most acquaintances care. Like, oh, I'm sorry.
[00:33:07] You know, I'm going to try to make you feel comfortable, but they're going to move on with their lives too. And she's like, you're moving on with your lives. What the fuck? You know, that's the vibe. Which is also fair. I mean, like, and I think more than anything right now, Pam is blaming herself for not being there. Yeah. For not stopping it, for not being there. Like, you know, when he was having the seizure in the kitchen, she was like, I'll never let anything happen to you. Mommy's here. And mommy wasn't there and something happened.
[00:33:37] I mean, the thing I, we know that Jason comes back to life and is probably some kind of an undead monster. Was that fair to say? Like he did die and then comes back anyway. Or do we not know that for sure? I mean, he gets killed many times. Right. It's some supernatural thing going on or fictitious scientific. Scientific thing.
[00:34:07] I mean, he gets more supernatural as the movies go on. Yeah. So. Like there's a tiny bit of believability for the first four movies. Like maybe he didn't drown. Maybe he. Washed up on shore or something. Yeah. But it's, to me, the way she's standing there looking at the lake. And if you, like they search for the body and didn't find the body. And I could understand a mom thinking they didn't find the body. So maybe he's not dead.
[00:34:35] But you wouldn't be thinking he's in the lake. You'd be thinking he's in the woods. You know, if he's in the lake, he's dead. And so that's my point is that she seems crazy because she's like, he's here. I know he's here. I know that sounds like a hysterical mother thing to say, but I just know it. And she's looking in the middle of the lake and she doesn't want them to disturb the lake.
[00:35:01] She's like, I don't know if I think it was just like disturbing a shrine. It seemed something more than that to me. Like it was frantic. Like not just that she was insulted or offended by it, but she was like, can you just leave it for one summer? You know, it's like she expects him to come out of the lake.
[00:35:20] Like, and, and I think that to me that says on some level, she feels that there's some impossible thing that's possible here, either because of supernatural or I'm sure we'll talk about her mysterious past. Like maybe it's some kind of a sci-fi thing or something. And so she's living in a different reality than most people.
[00:35:41] And I think about sanity is pretty much just what we all agree it is, you know, and different cultures, things seem insane to other cultures because you're not in inundated with that. But for her, she's one person, maybe who has this like idea for whatever reason, maybe once we learn more about her past and stuff, we'll know. But she just has this feeling that my son's going to come out of the lake.
[00:36:06] So you guys need to stay away, you know, and stop giving up on him and all this stuff because he's there and he's coming. You know what I mean? That's like, and she, I feel like she's sort of wrestling in between that fixation on her and sitting at home with all his stuff all around and being mad at everybody else for not caring as much she does or for just. Letting it go.
[00:36:33] And then the other side is her just deciding, okay, I do need to let go of that. That's crazy. I need to mourn and get over my son and be out in the world and have fun and be human again, as she says at one point. So that's one interesting thing about these two episodes. Anyways, I feel like she's kind of going between those two modes. Well, it's hard. It's really hard to get closure if you don't have a body. Yeah.
[00:37:02] Like you don't have that body to see in that state. Like your brain just can't, you know, there's always this little bit of, well, maybe they're still around. Mm-hmm. But like I said, I think you would want people searching the lake floor. I didn't say that. Well, they said they did. Yeah. But then if they don't find anything, then you'd say, well, are you sure you searched it thoroughly?
[00:37:25] And also you would want people searching those woods for maybe he's alive, but you wouldn't be standing there just looking at the center of the lake being like, don't disturb it. That's the weird part. You know? Yeah. But I mean. And we know she turns crazy later, so I think she's got some of that already. Yeah, there's definitely something already going on.
[00:37:50] I appreciate the scene where they're opening the various wilderness gear on the floor where we were talking about the machete earlier. Mm-hmm. You get the sense that, you know, if he's still alive out there somewhere, maybe the things he learns with this assorted gear will help sustain him in the woods. Yeah. Yeah. Because he was going to read that book tonight twice.
[00:38:20] Yeah. I think that was deliberate because it's funny. It's fun. It's fun because we know where it goes. So we're seeing, oh, that's a seed right there. Well, I mean, and in the fandom, there's always been like, okay, let's say he didn't drown and he made it to the side of like, how did he live for so long? Blah, blah, blah. So this explains that. It puts it in canon and. Mm-hmm. Read the whole book in one night. Yeah. Like, I appreciate it. Yeah.
[00:38:50] It's cool. It does bring up, you know, the big question between the first two movies is, you know, if he's just out there in the woods, how has she never seen him walking around? I mean, I don't know how big those woods are, but if they're both out there for years. Yeah. And, you know, maybe that's something that the show will explore in later episodes. But it's also another. And why hasn't he gone to her? It's another.
[00:39:20] Yeah. Why? That's true. It's still true. But what I was going to say is that compressing the timeline probably helps with that a little bit too. You know, it's not 1958 to 1980 in between. Right. Just one year. But still, I think you'd go right to her. Yeah. That's. I feel like they're going to explain it, though. Like, right now, we don't know. I have faith that we're going to get this answered. I'm not.
[00:39:50] Yeah, I think so. Still on Pam. So he has the flashback, as you said, to opening that package. He has a seizure. And then she's cuddling him in bed saying, you know, I'll never let anything happen to you. Right. I'm here. Which is sad, given what we know is going to happen. But then we see she's reliving it in the present, holding the pillow. Mommy's here. Yeah. That's right where you start to get that.
[00:40:20] But you just think of that. Kill her, mommy. Kill her. You know, like he's becoming a part of her psyche. And then when she goes to the Founder's Day picnic and she's like resisting getting out of the Jeep. That's kind of like what I was saying, that she wants to step out into the world and be a normal person, but also doesn't.
[00:40:45] And the sheriff feels her going over to the dark side, but wants to pull her into the light. And Linda Carlini is so likable that I find myself going, yeah, get her out there, have her socialize. Let's be healthy. But we know it's going to happen. So it's, it's tragic, but it's also something kind of delicious about it.
[00:41:07] And I was thinking it's sort of like Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul 2, where we know these characters are on a downward trajectory the whole time. It's hard to tell a story where the ending is already written. It's, it's a really complicated thing to do. And I appreciate anyone who tries it and they're, they seem to be doing a pretty good job with it. Yeah. They're doing, I wonder if they studied Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, because it feels like if you do it well,
[00:41:36] you could actually find a lot of really fun and interesting things about a prequel, you know? Yeah. And you can, I mean, you can make, even when you know what's going to happen, you can still make it tense and want to follow a story. Surprising. Oppenheimer. I mean, the first time I saw it and every time I've rewatched it, when they do that countdown to does the bomb go up? I know what happens. I know my history. Every single time, like, I don't, I hold my breath until the countdown finishes. Yes.
[00:42:06] But I think the other thing with her being in the car is just speaking as someone who's had, you know, tragedy or whatever. You don't necessarily want to talk about it. There's a look people give you that you don't want to deal with. Like, even if they're not talking about it, there's a look you're getting. There's a, and just. Like pitying. You don't want to be pitying. Yeah. Yeah. You, you don't want to not hear it, but you'd also don't want to deal with it.
[00:42:31] And like, it's this whole weird thing that you just, you'd rather not be around people because it's easier because being around people is so flipping awkward. Yeah. Well, and to, when she's there, uh, like the crazy Ralph comes up and says crystal Lake, don't give up her dead. Two lungs full of Lake will sink you to the silt. And once you're down there, you stay down, you don't rot. So you don't rise.
[00:42:59] And I think usually when a body drowns, it sinks, but then D decomposition blows it and goes back up. But he's like, that doesn't happen in crystal Lake. I don't know how he knows that or why, but, um, maybe it helps explain why they haven't found Jason's body or why he can come back later and not be all decomposed. But anyway, then she's sort of like, that's freaking her out.
[00:43:27] And then she starts being overstimulated by the fireworks and she sees the kids swimming in the lake and, oh, they shouldn't be in there. And then, um, they find, she finds out that they're reopening the camp and she's pissed about that. And so then she just like, can't hold it all in anymore. Get out. None of you are safe. She says a bunch of different things. None of you are safe. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Look at you celebrating while my son is missing.
[00:43:55] Why would you not tell me you're reopening the camp? Um, I guess it's all sort of related to just moving on with life after Jason died. But I feel like, you know, later we're talking about masks in the second episode and her mask, at least to a degree came off here. And I thought that was, uh, really interesting, but I just thought about all this.
[00:44:20] Because, because you were saying, um, how she doesn't want to be looked at with pity. But I also just think she has on some level contempt for everyone. She said to Lee, why are you bringing me out here with all these people? Just when she's at her worst self, she, she gets closer to the Pamela Voorhees we know and love from the movies. Where she's just like, fuck everybody, you know? They do.
[00:44:50] There's a good shot when, uh, she's screaming in the water. It looks like an old, old timey shot where the camera freezes on her mouth screaming and it zooms in. Yeah. Like from Sego. Yeah. Yeah. I loved how they, as you were saying, uh, Jamie, they mimicked the Friday the 13th opening and they didn't try to make it look cool or modern at all.
[00:45:19] It looked as eighties as it did back then. And then they had the title sequence in the second episode. And same thing with that. It was very cool and very retro, retro horror. Okay. I just took your whole point, Nathan. I'm sorry. Why don't you go again? What else do you want to talk about?
[00:45:44] So to, I guess, piggyback more off of a Pam, we can talk about the two agents. Yes. So these two people show up under the guise of having discovered Jason's body, but they know something about Pam's past.
[00:46:05] And this, you know, this is kind of one of the first moments early on in the series where I'm like, okay, this is going to be different because they pull out a needle and try to drug her. When did you realize that they weren't state police? I think I probably suspected it when the guy said, made a derogatory comment about Jason. Yeah. She said, oh yeah, my neighbors would rather just probably forget what happened. And the guy says, sure they would kid like that.
[00:46:36] But I don't know, maybe not even then. It was right around that time for me. Cause like ask them all the neighbors, like the neighbors is a weird question. Yeah. Like that's a weird question to ask. I wasn't catching on, but then right, right after that, um, he, she says, you're tracking dirt in my house. And then he gets, oh, I have dirt on my a hundred dollar shoes.
[00:46:58] And then second time watching, I realized that's when she knew because she'd been talking to Lee and he had $11 shoes and that was on a police salary. And when that guy says, I have a hundred dollars to you, she said, where did you say you're from? And then he says, he's a police officer and she's realizing how these guys aren't who they say they are. But I just thought, oh yeah, this is off here. This whole thing. I don't think he's just a, um, asshole cop. I think something else is going on. I think I was thinking it right about them.
[00:47:27] Yeah. And she does a great job of fighting them off. It's so cool. Yeah. You know, that scene where that grocery bag or whatever gets put on the guys. It's amazing. Fills up and then keep a garden fresh. Yeah. It fills up and then pops. That was gross, but awesome. That was so awesome. That felt, that felt very Friday the 13th.
[00:47:55] The whole scene to me felt. It was even a little. Almost evil. Yeah. Yeah. It did. The way he's walking around with the blood bag. And you just knew it was going to blow up at some point. And it couldn't have been better. Just right on her face. They knew we'd be laughing. I think. Among their belongings. She, you know, she's searching them after the fact.
[00:48:25] And there's a piece of newspaper. Pam's name is circled with the last name Wittering. That seems like maybe Voorhees is a fake name or. Yeah. I guess we don't, we don't know. That's the implication. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Cause the guy had said the guy, wait, the guy had said, uh, Voorhees. That's an interesting name as if to suggest that's not your real name. And she goes, it's a family name.
[00:48:53] So that, I think she made up that name for Crystal Lake. Yeah. And then on that same piece of paper, it said Argonaut. Next to Jason. Yeah. With the question mark. Yeah. So I guess he was, whatever it was, he was called the Argonaut. So then switching to Jason, Jason, the Argonauts, the mythology story. I guess that's where she pulled his name from. And it's, it kind of sounded familiar. So, but I looked it up. The, the Greek mythology story people know is Jason and the Argonauts.
[00:49:23] And I looked it up that Jason is a young hero who assembles a team of Greece's greatest warriors to help him reclaim his stolen kingdom. And the connect, I tried to find a connection. And I think as it relates to this show, it's a cautionary tale about using excessive violence
[00:49:46] in service of a righteous cause that can compromise you as much as the person that you're pursuing or hurting. That fits. At least just going off of the word Argonaut and nothing else. That feels like a pretty good summation. Cause we don't really know anything about too much about the facility. It seems like a facility anyway, that Pam and Jason used to be in. Yeah.
[00:50:16] She sees a flash of where they were right when. Yeah. Door with it. It looks like a lab. It says, are you not? It has a, the logos like a, a, but it's a beaker and it looks, is it meant to be a tree inside? Or I couldn't tell if it was a tree or like a rocket ship or something. Wasn't sure. I didn't pause long enough on that. But it makes you wonder, yeah. Yeah.
[00:50:43] Was he part of some kind of an experiment or something? And are they going to try to explain how Jason is so, uh, is, is immortal or whatever because of some experiment, which feels a bit midi-chlorian to me potentially. Yeah. I, that's, that's what I'm getting weird about. Yeah. Like this whole lab thing, I'm going to wait to see how it plays out before I judge it.
[00:51:11] But that's, what's feeling weird to me about it all is this, this lab thing. Yeah. And the way they, they handled, um, Pennywise in dairy had some aspects of that too. I would say not, not totally, but I don't know. Yeah. We haven't explained it yet. I can't judge it yet. I'm just. Since we're on it though, then might as well, um, mention in episode two, when the guy's
[00:51:37] doing this regression possession hypnosis thing on her so that telling her to let her old damaged self inhabit her body and mind completely. So she can finally say what she never could to the people who hurt her. It felt like a hypnosis and he has her go back to where she felt the most vulnerable and afraid. And it's that same hallway, except we get more. I freeze framed it and stepped through it. It's Jason as a baby, I think, or it's a baby foot anyway.
[00:52:05] There's Pam in a pretty bonnet. There's a crayon drawing of something, but I couldn't really tell what it was. There's a man with some other men behind him looking on smiling. There's someone's hand holding a bloody lock of look like child's hair, but I don't know hair. Um, then I think it was Pam's feet being strapped to a gurney restrained. And then it was Jason's heavily deformed face more.
[00:52:34] So look like underwater and then some like, um, intimidating medical or scientific apparatus with yellow and blue fluids, like for injecting or something like that. So it just felt all very like scientific lab experiment kind of a thing. Which is weird. Yeah. I'm curious. I mean, like we've got telekinesis later in his storyline. So maybe we're tying it all together.
[00:53:03] Maybe it's all going to make sense and it's all going to be okay. And I really, really, really, really hope so. So, but right now I'm just a little. And part of that too is, um, the guy said something about what if the people in crystal lake knew what you really were as if it's bad, you know? So you wonder if she did something bad and if she's the type of person to respond to her
[00:53:31] son dying by going around and just killing random teenagers, then you got to think there's a chance maybe that there was some of that in her before that happened, you know, maybe. Or does she have some kind of, like if we're going down this route, does she have some kind of power? And that's why, cause she calls Nora, her friend Nora, who I guess is connected still to this group. Yeah. It seemed like she worked at the lab maybe, but it's hard to tell for sure.
[00:53:59] But she's got to be a little bit in the know. Like Nora's gotta be a little bit. Cause when she calls her back, you know, she's like, they found me. And then she calls her back and she's just like, and I forget which episode it was in, which is like, it wasn't, you know, if these were guys that went rogue or whatever, like they don't know, nobody knows yet that they found you. Yeah. So she's still able to be hidden for now. But they could send more people. Yeah. So they could send more people. So whatever this company is, they're looking for her. Yep.
[00:54:29] So it's a mystery. We'll see. Where to come. Where to come. Yeah. I did love when she is, I mean, I know we talked a little bit when, but when the, the guy with the blood bag head just slowly sits up in the background, that's always one of those. I don't care how many times you see it in a movie. It's still so creepy. Yeah. Yeah. That whole scene. I just, I thought it was great.
[00:54:56] The way it was so vicious and he threw her through the closet door, I think, which first she slashed the guy's throat, which is a very Pamela Voorhees thing to do later on, but more on purpose later. Yeah. And it was just so vicious, but it did feel very evil dead to me. And it almost, you could feel the joy of the filmmaking in it somehow. Wow. Cause that was way more blood than a human head's going to bleed in that amount of time. Yeah. That's right.
[00:55:25] Like she, she takes the, um, she can't get the machete out of his head. She's struggling. Then she finally gets it out and then it starts just bleeding so much blood. And she's like, Oh crap. And then she tries to tape it and then she puts the keep it fresh or whatever garden fresh bag on it. And then it starts filling up and you know, and she's like, Oh no. And you just know it's going to pop at some point. Great.
[00:55:52] And we got the explanation right away of the opening scene. Like before the episode ended, we knew. Oh yeah. That's right. Why she was covered in blood and teeth. You know what that reminded me of when the bag exploded? Since we're on the, uh, the walking dead cast. It kind of reminded me when, uh, I think it's the season five finale. When a Walker sneaks in the gates that are accidentally left open.
[00:56:19] Rick shoots a Walker and like all of its guts just come flying down onto his face on the ground. Oh yeah. Felt similar. All right. Anything else, Jamie? Jamie. We've got, we haven't talked about leave on too much. It's cool. Yeah. Like him. Yeah. He seems like a cool dude. He seems to care about her. Like, and then he comes at the worst possible time to check on her. Yeah.
[00:56:48] He's new, new character. I think. Right. For this series. He used to be Newark. I think. Sounds right. Yeah. He says he used to be in Newark, which for those who are not East coasters, it's a pretty rough town. It's a pretty rough city. Jersey. He's probably going to die. What? He's probably going to die. I mean, I just think that about everyone. Yeah.
[00:57:15] I mean, it's, it's bad news when you're in the prequel and nothing else. Maybe he goes back to Newark. He's got his sister. Yeah. He's looking after him. So something's, something's happening in his past. I'm curious to find out what's going on with him. Yeah. Cause the stuff with his sister, it's nice character development for him, but there was nothing there that I even made any notes on so far.
[00:57:45] You know, they just seem to have a cool relationship. Yeah. It was, I mean, it's episode two. You get a little deeper into it. We know that she's a journalist and she's looking for a story. Yeah. So maybe that'll tie back into Jason or the larger. Story of the camp. Or even this lab. Yeah. I think she's a goner. No, I'm just kidding.
[00:58:16] There are very few people we know aren't goners and Ralph is one of them. That's right. Not yet. One thing we know about Lee is that he seems to have a history with Pam, at least for the past several months or maybe a year or two. That we haven't been included in on too much. Like it seems like they're already friends at the start of the show. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:58:42] I mean, to me, he's, he's very likable. So there's that. And I, I know this is touching on episode two a little bit, but the two main things that are interesting to me. Well, I felt bad for him when she went to bed with the seminar guy. Cause I'm like, Oh, we like to start talking about episode two. Like let's, let's have leave on roll up. Since it's episode two. There's one more thing for one.
[00:59:11] Um, but let me just say this. And then the other thing about leave on is he has a big crush on her. They're there. They're there. They have a bond together and now he's going to be investigating this murder. And he found a clue, right? It was half of her scissors. So that's, that's interesting for him to have a crush on her and then potentially be the one to find out that she just killed two guys. So that's why. Yeah. That'll be tough.
[00:59:38] And it was interesting just on, you know, we see that bear at the end. That's what I was going to say. We didn't talk about the bear yet. Oh yeah. That was weird. That was another thing I didn't. You didn't like that. I like that she was using probably stuff from the pantry at the camp, like honey and blueberries and tuna. I love that she smothered their bodies in stuff that the bear is going to want to eat. I love that she had them eaten by a bear. That's all good.
[01:00:05] The bear coming up to her and like sniffing at her face and being like, oh, you're like me and walking away. Yeah. Walking away. Like that was all weird. Yeah. That's another thing about Pamela is there's this sense that there's this power. And rage in her. And I thought Linda Cardellini did such a good job of playing this complicated role where you do. I do feel like there's something underneath there and it's powerful. And maybe part of that is just because I know what's going to happen with the character,
[01:00:35] but I think she just played it so well. And then, yeah, I thought of Yellow Jackets. Did you guys watch that? With, uh, I can't even remember the character's name, but similar bear moment in that show. Yes. That's yeah. I thought of the same thing. I didn't, I didn't love the bear. Like, like I said, I liked the logistics of the bear. I thought that was a very smart move. Very good idea. But the whole bear coming up to her and then I did, but I liked the crazy, you know, she's
[01:01:04] holding Jason's hand, but he's not really there. Like, I'm like, okay, is he there? Is he not there? Oh, he's not there. It's like this triumphant moment with fireworks. And yeah. And you hear that song. Um, I would give anything I own. Give him my life, my heart, my home. Yeah. That was cool. That was beautifully shot. I loved all of that. It was interesting at the start of the episode when we see Ralph setting up the bear traps a little too close to camp. And fast forward to the end, we see an actual bear.
[01:01:32] So I wondered if there's some kind of connective tissue in a way that it's not direct, but like he knows more than he can say. Yeah. Or knows how to verbalize. Yeah. What did you call him? You keep calling him, uh, not a harbinger. A harbinger. Yeah. He just, uh, seems to know things even more in this series than he did in the movies. He's just the fact that he's like, there's worse things in the woods and the, what he
[01:02:00] was saying about what happens in the lake and stuff. He's getting more lines. So. Yeah. But it seems a little more like in the movies, he's like, you're going to be doomed. And he's like, well, yeah, he knows that people have died there. So it's doesn't seem that impressive. Yeah. Like it does here. Or at least curious. Yeah. The, the death curse thing is the closest thing he gets, but here he's explaining. You know, he's stuck in the silt and then. Mm-hmm. What? Oh.
[01:02:30] It's episode two where Levon comes back to him and he says something. Hold on. I mean, that's just when he said there's worse things in the wood. Yeah. Yeah. It was just kind of the way. Yeah. Yeah. There are worse things in the woods than bears. But he says it and then Levon's like, what'd you say? He's like, nothing, nothing. Like he doesn't want, you know, like he said it kind of, kind of eerie. Yeah.
[01:02:59] And then when he was asked, he's like, oh, nothing, nothing. Like he's got some kind of connection to the woods that he's not totally free on. All right. Let's get into two. Yeah. What do you want to talk about first, Jamie? Um. Can we add? So we're into, we were talking about Levon. Who brings home human hamburger and puts it in their fridge? Yeah. That was weird. Like if I was the sister, I wouldn't just be like, oh, what are you doing with this?
[01:03:29] I'd be like, what the fuck, dude? One, this is evidence. This is not how you keep evidence. I don't care that this is a small backwards town. It's odd. Maybe there's something to that idea that maybe he brings his work home with him. Yeah. Yeah. There's that. Literally. Then he spreads it out on his dining room table while he was painting his little Warhammer figures, which weren't Warhammer because I don't think Warhammer was a thing back then.
[01:03:59] But I get, and they said, you know, you don't have to trust or you can't trust the M.E. anyway or whatever. So I get why he wants to kind of investigate by himself. But there has to be a place to put the evidence that is not your fridge. Yeah. Somewhere at the police station. It was very odd. Like what if it was a full body that he found? What was he going to do? Yeah. I don't get that. That was really.
[01:04:26] I don't understand what it does for the story so far, but. Maybe we'll find out. Other than him find out. Because they say, you know, the M.E. is bad. So he found that piece of scissor, which thank you for telling me what that was. I couldn't figure it out. I paused and stared at it so long. I'm like, what is that? Half a scissor. It's a sciss. Yep. Like, I don't think. You know, we get the impression that if he wasn't going through the meat, that we weren't going to find this clue. So, okay.
[01:04:56] I'll give you that part. But. I mean, he's not only taking it home. He's taking it home for like the weekend. Like. This is not the 1920s. This is the 1970s. Like we have chain of custody and stuff like that. Like, all of this evidence is getting thrown out in court. What else? Nathan? Yeah. Let's talk about Grace a little bit more. Mm-hmm. Kind of building off of what we saw in the first episode. She builds a.
[01:05:25] Seems to build a bomb with Pam. Mm-hmm. Due to their connection to Jason. And she. I'm not sure what to make of her relationship with Claudette. It's partially curiosity or maybe envy of older teens. Or maybe she's up to something. Maybe there's some resentment because of what happened to Jason. Or. There's kind of a stalemate. With Claudette and Grace. Because.
[01:05:56] Claudette was supposed to be watching Jason. But Grace was the reason Jason swam out so far. So maybe they both feel like they have something over each other's heads. Yeah. They do. And that's what happens at the party. Yeah. But I. I took it straightforwardly. Not to say that I'm right. But that she just wanted to be included. And that. You know.
[01:06:22] She probably connected with Jason because she feels like an outcast. Like him. But she doesn't want to be that way. But she. They still kicked her out. So now she's just sort of cemented as an outcast. And then. I think. Was it. After that. At the. No. It wasn't. But anyway. She has no one to sit with at the cafeteria. And so. Maybe her outcast status will fuel her storyline. Or maybe. Right. Maybe she's up to something. And we're not seeing exactly what we. What.
[01:06:52] It's not. As straightforward as I think. I feel like they like. Made her look so little kid. At the water. Like she's got this. You know. Like. Very. Very childish. You know. 10 year old bathing suit. And now all of a sudden. She's a freshman in high school. No. I don't think she's in high school. I think that's why. When she went to the. Party and said. Oh there's a party. And then Claudette was like. It's for high school girls. I think she's younger. But they were in. The bathroom at school. No. I think they were.
[01:07:22] Weren't they at camp? No. The camp's not open yet. Oh. Oh. With all the graffiti. And. Yeah. Yeah. I think that is school. And maybe they're just. Maybe there's more grades together. But like. Yeah. It just. It. That was one of the things I was having trouble with. Because like. They made her seem like. You know. An elementary aged kid. At this. You know. At the camp. And swimming. And even at the Founders Day Parade. And then all of a sudden. When she's at school. Oh. Yeah.
[01:07:52] I'm confused. I just thought all that stuff was at the camp. No. It's at school. Because camp's closed. It's not open yet. It's not summer yet. Oh yeah. It's not. Okay. I get it now. All right. Yeah. Yeah. Our ages.
[01:08:22] I was just. I was having a lot of trouble with the timelines. Watching this. I mean. Seventh grade is. What age? Thirteen. I could see her being thirteen. Yeah. Maybe she's smart. And they've moved her up a grade. Or something. Which would make sense. Why. She doesn't have any friends. Because she's younger than everybody else. We have some explanations. But I don't know. It was just one of those things that. Part of the stuff where I'm like. Oh. All right.
[01:08:51] I want to talk about Richter educational modalities. Yes. First. Not. Not yet into the confrontation. And everything between. This guy. And. I want to say Linda. Pamela. But. I keep doing the same thing. First what it is. It's. You guys have heard of Est. Ever heard of that? Est? Yeah. So. Not that specifically. But I think. Like.
[01:09:21] I imagine what kind of thing this is. Well. So. First off. This. Like Rita. Wants. Linda. To go to. A self-help seminar. Linda. I did it again. Pamela. And. You know. You wouldn't think. Especially when. Pamela's been so. Reluctant to. Integrate. That she would. Go to something like this. That looks like it might. Be a pain in the ass. But I feel like they made it believable.
[01:09:50] That she would go. In a few different ways. One is that. She had just told. Lee. That she's been at home. Surrounded by Jason's stuff. And feels stuck. And a little crazy. And what I wouldn't give. To feel human again. And then. When she's talking to. Rita. And Rita tells her. That her own child. Was stillborn. And that made a. A connection between them. And so you could feel them. Sort of opening up to each other. And bonding a little bit. So. But I think the main thing.
[01:10:19] Was she sees the sketchy guy. At the bar. And thinks someone else is after me. So all those. Three things together. Were like. Okay. I believe that she would just. Get out of town. And. Go with Rita. To this thing. Just to get away from this guy. And that she'd been feeling. Closer to Rita. And whatever. So that was pretty good. Way to make it believable. But anyway. What it is. So he. It says it's REM. Or Richter. Educational modalities. Founded by. Facilitator. Wilhelm Richter. This is very. Overtly modeled.
[01:10:49] After. This thing called. Est. Or. Earhard. Seminar trainings. In the. Sixties. And seventies. If you've heard of. Landmark education. That's an offshoot. There are a bunch of others though. They're called. Large group. Awareness trainings. And. In Est. In particular. A lot of this stuff is. Very close to what I've. Heard about it. Where. They're not allowed to go to the bathroom. For long periods of time. The doors are closed. I don't know if they're locked.
[01:11:19] But people are pressured. To stay in the room. The facilitators. Berate the participants. And challenge their. Explanations and excuses for things. And sometimes. Humiliate them. And. It sounds awful. But. The basic idea is. Like. Much of your suffering. Comes from the stories. That we tell ourselves. And interpretations. That we have. About. Reality. And that. You can be. Free and more. At peace. When you.
[01:11:49] Accept things. As they are. And take responsibility. For your life. So. It was meant to help people. But. It could also be. Reckless. Like. It was. It felt here. And cause harm. Because you really are. You're breaking down. People's psychological defenses. And stirring up trauma. Without. Necessarily. Having the training. Or the safeguards. To deal with. What comes out of that. And so. Especially if you're working. You're working with somebody. Like Pamela Voorhees. It could be a bad idea. Like she says. You know.
[01:12:18] What kind of doors. Are. Sometimes it's other doors. That should be opened. Or whatever she said. But. I was actually. Part of a group. That had some roots. In this. In the. Mid 2000s. It was sort of an evolution. It wasn't as harsh as this. But. And it was actually helpful. To a lot of people. Let them try on new ideas. And see themselves more clearly. Or in new ways. But it also shook people up. And. The scene where everyone's crying. And screaming.
[01:12:49] And clutching pillows. And stuff. It reminded me. Of that group. Because we would get really. Emotionally expressive in there. Just express rage. Or. Anguish. Or whatever. Let it all out. You know. So. And it felt really good. Sometimes to do that. Or even to just witness. Someone else doing it. So here. It just. I think seems like a nightmare. Watching it on a show. Where you're not actually. In the middle of it. But. It brought back some memories. So there's a little backstory. On all that.
[01:13:20] This guy didn't seem very good at it though. I mean. When he's. When that woman is saying. I'm afraid of men. And he's like. You're. You're. Just defending men. And then. Saying. I mean. That's not that abnormal. It's not. But it doesn't seem at all. Helpful. Clearly. Right. It's just like. You're a piece of shit. And I don't think. Maybe they would have. Like. I never. Went to an S training. But. I'm not sure they would do. That. The idea is to break down your stories of things. But not impose your own story onto it.
[01:13:50] And that's what it felt like he was doing. Like. Inserting his own ideology. I mean. Anybody who's going to sleep with one of the people. Yeah. The night that he meets there. You know he's a sleazebag. Yeah. I think that. Both those scenes were just a setup. That he's not good at this. He's doing it for power and control. And to no longer be. What was his name? Phil Lipschitz from Rhode Island. He doesn't want to be that guy anymore. I mean. Even now. Gurus. Sleeping with their students. And framing it as.
[01:14:19] For their own development. That happens now. You know. If you. Saw the vow. With NXIVM. Or. There's a lot of cults out there. But I. I feel like. Probably in the 70s. It was even more common. I don't know that for a fact. But I wouldn't be surprised. I mean. It's not ethical. Yeah. I think it's. He's a total douchebag. For sure. Yeah. He definitely. Word salads. His way. Into getting what he wants from people. Yes. Like he tears. Them down.
[01:14:49] And when they. When they build themselves. Back up. It's. Based on what he wants them to build up. Yeah. If he had his way. That's what it would be. It didn't seem to work for him too well this time. No. What was it? Pam. Like one of the things Pam says is. Some of us were meant to wear masks. Yeah. Which. I love that. Plays for her. But then also plays for our boy Jason. Yeah. The whole thing about masks is. Is brilliant. Yeah. I thought that. I thought that was a brilliant line.
[01:15:19] That was probably my favorite line of the whole show so far. I mean. The theme of masks. And. And. What. Like. Putting on a. Performance as he says. Or just playing a role. Like Carol. You know. I feel like Walking Dead really has that. And what's underneath. And. And what we're capable of under the. Under certain circumstances. That feels very Walking Dead to me. And then I was sort of wondering if the title Crystal Lake fits into this too. Maybe a stretch. But.
[01:15:49] The surface of the lake seems serene. Until the monster. Erupts out of it. So that's sort of like. A mask. And then what's really underneath. But. Anyway. The most interesting thing about all of this is. Exposing someone like Pamela Voorhees to this. Thing that's meant to shake you up and call out what's inside you. And knowing that she has this. What she has inside. Yeah. A killer stalker. Like every time he was like. You should be your authentic self.
[01:16:19] I'm like you don't. I don't know if you want. I don't want that. That's probably not a smart move sir. There's a little Easter egg here. Did you see the name of the lodge. Where the seminar is taking place? Mm-mm. So Pamela walks. Outside and we see the name. Of the building is the Pakenack Lodge. Which is also the name of the counselor training center. That was the majority of the setting in Friday the 13th part two. Mm.
[01:16:49] Cool. Good catch. Very good. What else about the. Interactions between these guys. These two. What did you think of the subversion of it being. What was his name? Lipschitz. Yeah. Phil Lipschitz. Yeah. What did you think about him being the guy. That. Takes a swing at. Richter. Instead of Pamela. Oh. Oh. Outside.
[01:17:19] Yeah. Or at least he beats her to it. No. Phil Lipschitz was. What he. Richter's real name. Oh. I was like. Whoever the. The other guy is. Yeah. I thought. So. Just to remind people. Pamela was going up to him with her bowling ball. After. So. He. He. Made a move on her. They almost slept together. But she stormed out. Which maybe we'll talk about that a little bit more. And then the next day at the seminar. And she did that whole hypnosis thing.
[01:17:49] But she freaked out. And. Decided. I'm leaving. And then he. Oh no. No. She didn't decide she was leaving. He said. Are you running away like you did last night. From my hotel room. And that's when she's like. You're. You're a piece of shit. I forget what she said. You're. You're despicable. Yes. And then. Then she left. But then she grabs her bowling ball. And she comes back. And she was. Getting ready to toss it. At his head or something. And then somebody. One of the other guys. Who was having problems with his wife.
[01:18:19] Stepped in and said. I did what you said. And now my wife's divorcing me. And started beating. Beating him to death. And I think the reason. Probably why they did that. Is because they're not ready for. Everyone to know. What Pam is capable of yet. And I think that's probably good. Since we're only on episode two. And the cops are going to get called for this. Yeah. If she's in jail. We can't progress the story very far. Exactly. Yeah. But I mean. This. The effects were really good. Like that gory face. And the missing teeth. Like that was awesome. I know.
[01:18:48] It looked like his face was. Pretty fucked up. Very. Yeah. Shapen. To that. Yeah. That was. That was really well done. I was. He was. He was asking her for help. But I still feel like he was. He would have been douchey to her again. Yeah. Yeah. You can't. Trust guys like that. Yeah. And the guy who hit him. What he. He said. You know I did what you asked. I told her what I needed. And she left me. So.
[01:19:18] It seems like. This guy's pissing off people left. You know all kinds of places. It's not just. I mean. It's not just the two people we saw. When you go to a. Thing like that. Or these landmark forum. You know you're encouraged. To stir things up. In your life. And. It can. I'm sure. Cause. A lot of issues. But. I don't know. This one. Seemed like. If you tell. A guy. You should tell your wife. What you need.
[01:19:48] And then he does it. And she divorces him. I don't know if that's a reason. To go kill the guy. That told you. To tell your wife. What you needed. You know. Yeah. But I mean. But. A lot of people like that. It's not their fault. It's got to be somebody else's fault. That she left. Yeah. What do you think that. Rita. Is. Getting from a trip like this. Nitrous oxide. With the doctor. With the dentist. Yeah. That sounds about right.
[01:20:18] Yeah. Rita didn't seem into it. At all. Like. Yeah. She didn't seem like someone who. Who. For lack of a better term. Drank the Kool-Aid. About how all that's gonna. Help her life. She's just wondering what it would be like to sleep with the guy. I mean. For now. I. I just think. She was. A way to get. Pamela into this. Seminar. But I'm sure they'll. We'll get some story with her. That's. Yeah. I mean. Pam needs a friend. Yeah.
[01:20:58] Cool. Yeah. Yeah. That. Like you said. No judgment. I mean. That. That's the one part where I felt a little bit. Judgmental of her. But otherwise. I. I like her. She's great. You know. If it's too. Consenting. Yeah. But. Single adults. No judgment. No judgment. She's hooking up with everybody in the town who's single. No judgment there. Leaving your friend. To hook up with a dentist. Is a problem. Now the dentist did invite. Pam up. But. I don't think either one of them were down for that. And she seemed okay with it too.
[01:21:28] Pamela. She was like. Go ahead. It's fine. Yeah. She didn't seem to care. Still. I feel like they're not that far outside of town. I don't know. Like they're probably. It seems like they're not terribly far away. Like it wasn't like. Can you get home okay? Or any of that. It seems like. Everybody's going to be fine. So. What about the. The sex scene. That was. I thought that was really interesting. Because. In. The Friday the 13th. Movies. Well the first one. Like I said.
[01:21:58] When we covered it last week. I feel like. There's. Pamela's judging people for. Sex. Mostly. It's just because. She knew at that point. That. The. Counselors. Just. Ignored. Jason. Allowed him to drown. We're off. Having sex. But also just the way the camera works in that movie. Where you're. Looks like a peeping Tom. And. Anytime anybody has sex. They're probably going to be killed. So now we get a sex scene with her. I thought that was a really interesting.
[01:22:27] Thing to do. And then the way. It went. Was. Kind of. Fun. And interesting. And she. He was like encouraging her to. Let go. And. He laid back. And was like. You're in control. And she's like. Okay. So he jumps on him and bites him. That was nuts. Yeah. And then he's like. Hey. And then he's like. All right. Is that how you want to play? Turn her around. Took control. And she didn't want that. No. Get off me. And I'm like. Yeah. She's the bite her. Not the bitey. That's.
[01:22:57] That's not what she. Wanted. That was at least my read. From it. But I'm not exactly sure. What to make of it. But I thought it was. Kind of a funny. Fun scene. Yeah. And it was another time. Like she's not going to take shit. From somebody. Yeah. Yeah. And I didn't even. For some reason. Mind it. That she. Went to bed with the guy. Even though I agree with you. Nathan. That it's. Pretty unethical. Because I guess. Just because I feel like. She seems to be. In control. Of herself.
[01:23:27] And she. I didn't feel like. She was being. Taking advantage of him. Taking advantage of him. By him. Even though that was. Probably what he was trying to do. It's still. I feel like. She can take care of herself. But. I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. I think she was. All right. But. You know. If somebody else. Now he says. Nobody ever comes up to me. After these things. There's no way that. Yeah. He probably tries to sleep with somebody. At every single one. Yeah. Exactly.
[01:23:56] There's got to be some girl. Who comes up to me every time. He's just not used to. I guess. For lack of a better term. Someone who's less of a sad sack. Or he just says that. To every woman. That comes up to him. Oh. Yeah. He's. He's definitely got the same lines. That he uses over and over again. He's that kind of guy. Yeah. Maybe she has a. She seems to have a good read. On who he is. So maybe she was looking for. A way to get him alone. To. To potentially hurt him.
[01:24:24] Because at least at this point in the story. We still don't know what she went to that facility for. I think she. Was curious about what he was saying. Because. Yeah. Yeah. They're in the seminar. And. You know. He's telling her. You have rage. You go through your life performing. You wear roles. As masks. To keep. Yourself from being seen. And. He's right. Right. He has some talent.
[01:24:54] Because. He's. He has some talent. He. He's seeing something that's real. And. He says. You know. To avoid. You do that. To avoid having to look inside. And face the truth. Truth. And then he says to her. You deserve. She's like. Why do you. Why. Why should I have to do that. Or something. And he goes. You deserve to be happy and free. You deserve to let go of all the crap. You've been carrying around your whole life. And heal. And she gets emotional when he's saying that. She's. She's like. Oh. I do want that. That's.
[01:25:24] That's what I was getting from. Linda Cardellini's performance. And. I agree. Then he goes. And I promise if you see this through. You'll develop the confidence. To stop performing. To drop the mask. And finally embrace your true authentic self. And stalk and kill teenagers. So anyway. I think part of the reason why she went with him. Is because she wanted to see. Oh. Maybe he's right. Maybe there is. Some way I can feel more free or whatever. But. But. So I wondered. You know. Okay. Does.
[01:25:54] Did this whole thing. Have any impact. In leading her to become the Pamela Voorhees. That we know. And by the end of it. She's saying. As you said. Jamie. You know. Maybe some people are meant to wear masks. So. I don't think she's decided. I'm going to. Free that part of myself. But maybe she got more in touch with it. Like. I don't even know at this point. How much she knows. About what she's capable of. It feels like she knows at least some. Well. I mean. Why else would she say. You know.
[01:26:23] Some people are meant to wear masks. But maybe she just got a little bit more. More in touch with it. After this. Seems like there's some reason. Why they put it in the show. You know. I don't know if it was just. Because I thought it would be a fun episode. But. It might have actually had some. Impact on her psyche. No. I feel like. It's got to have some impact on her psyche. And then we also got to see. More of the. When she did the regression stuff. We got to see more of the lab. Which I think.
[01:26:54] It was still. Pretty brief. But they're just. Giving us a little bit more of a taste. So we can be curious. Yeah. A lot of their. Conversation. At the lodge. Gives us insight. Into her psyche. It's just that. The thing that she. Comes to terms with. By the end of the episode. Is not the thing that he was. Would be hoping that she was. Yeah. Yeah. By the end. It felt like.
[01:27:22] She was the one teaching him something. Right. All right. What. Anything else? Um. The party at. Camp Crystal Lake. Hmm. The teenagers. Having a party at the lake. Like. That felt. Very Friday the 13th. Hmm. That. I was like. All right. Teenagers drinking. And. Not being watched. And. Like the one kid. My dad has my whole life. Planned out.
[01:27:52] And I'm not going to be like him. Man. I don't know what I want to do. Like. Just. All that felt very Friday the 13th. I liked it. That's why it confused me. Because they're in school. Camp hasn't started yet. But they decided to go have the party. At the creepy. Crystal Lake. Because somebody's parents came home early. They were supposed to have the party. At somebody's house. And then they went to the camp. Because. It was free. And they couldn't have the party at the house anymore. Because the parents came home. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Steve. Steve is throwing this party.
[01:28:22] At his parents camp. Mm-hmm. They talk about. It's kind of under the guise. That he isn't going to be there much longer. Because he's going to go off to college. Or. Wherever. But we saw the first movie. So we know that he ends up. Essentially running the camp. At some point. So I wonder if something happens. During this show. So. That puts a halt to his plans. Mm-hmm. Something to think about. Going forward.
[01:28:51] I mean. And sometimes you have lofty dreams. When you're 16. That just don't pan out. When you're 30. Truth. I'm supposed to be on a boat. Chasing sharks around. That didn't work out for me. I was supposed to be a. New York Times bestselling novelist. Until I realized that I hate. Sitting alone in a room for hours. I had one more note about. Lee. Pam brings him cupcakes. Mm-hmm.
[01:29:21] And they seem. Cop themed. Like the blue and white. Yeah. Cop cakes. That was cute. And it seems like. She's using their friendship. As a means to. See if anybody's on to her. Yeah. Maybe she'll hear. Yeah. Here's some more. Secondhand information about. Discoveries near the bears. Or anything like that. Yeah. She's not dumb. Yeah. That made me feel bad for him too though. Yeah. It seems like. She. Is going to. Use her friends. In service to her.
[01:29:51] Greater goals. Mm-hmm. And I can see that. You know. Causing some conflict. By the end of the. Show. Maybe she'll be pretty isolated. That part felt a bit. Dexter-y. Yeah. I can see that. So. Is Jason back? That. I mean. Okay. So we got the. The. The Friday the 13th vibe. Mm-hmm. We got. You know. Teenagers making out. And drinking underage.
[01:30:21] And then. What's the 70s? If some of them were 18. It's not really underage. But anyway. And then the rain comes. And we're down to two people left. In the car. And then this. You know. All of a sudden. Stuff's like dropping on the car. Like. Oh wait. That's weird. And then they look out. Like. He gets out of the car. After bragging that like. This is a. Trans Am. You don't have to worry about this car. Um.
[01:30:50] He gets out of the car. And he looks out. And there is somebody in the woods. Like. It's. And it's Jason. Like. Yeah. I. I like. It took me forever to phrase frame it properly. But I totally like. Took a picture. Like. Of the well-lit Jason. But he is so much older. Like. I don't know if you can see it on there. Yeah. He is so much. That's like adult Jason. It seems like. I'll give you a teenager. Maybe. Yeah. I mean. This is only a year later. It doesn't make any sense. Yeah. He's so much older. His head is a little bit smaller.
[01:31:21] His face is deformed. But if you've been under a lake for a while. Okay. Your face gets deformed. Um. But he is. He's definitely. At the very least. A teenager body. Yeah. The one that flew out of the. Water in his mom's dream. Was damn near an adult. That wasn't a kid. Like the one. It was a kid looking up. Reaching for mom. Yeah. No. It was like the adult. Like the one at the end of the first movie. So wait. So do you think that. Because when I saw this Jason. I thought. Oh.
[01:31:51] What. That's adult Jason. What. How are they going to make that make sense. But maybe it's sort of like you were with. Grace. It's like. Except in reverse. Like. Oh. Well. No. Maybe he's like. He's 12. And he just grew a lot. Or something. Yeah. I mean. Some kids do grow six months over the summer. Or six inches over the summer. Like. It happens. I guess that could have happened to the kids. I. I'm just. Like I said. Weird on the timeline. I think it's the adult though. I think it's a big. They're going to have to explain that. Right. That's in the plan. Yeah. I mean.
[01:32:21] He doesn't look huge. Huge. He's not huge Jason yet. He's definitely a little lanky. Like. I'll give you a teenager. But it's a thousand percent Jason. Yeah. And. He broke. He threw that clog. He threw Grace's clog. Through the window. And that's Jason. That's like. I'm setting up something to scare the shit out of you. It was weird that he. He was wearing them first. No. I'm just kidding. He wasn't. Yeah. He could have been. We don't know. We didn't see that low. We didn't see that part. Yeah. Stop right about the D's.
[01:32:51] So. Yeah. That's. That's cool man. Because. I'm. Like I was saying that. The beginning of this podcast. I. I wonder if Friday the 13th fans are. Disappointed. That it's not more slashery. Or that we're not getting any hockey masks. Or anything like that. But it looks like we might. Be getting some Jason stuff. Yeah. I mean. We're not supposed to get a hockey mask. At this point. Like that's. I'm not. I bet. If the series goes on. I'm okay. Somebody else will probably wear one. It'll be around. I'm sure there'll be a nod to it. A hockey mask.
[01:33:21] I bet you they'll jump ahead in time. Or something like that. Maybe. I. But I did really really like the shoe. Because. One thing Jason does. Is set up scares. Like he moves bodies around. So that you find them. Like. So. Throwing that. You know. He could have thrown a rock. But he threw that shoe. Specifically. So they knew. So that Claudette. Because Claudette knew. Whose shoes they were. Because she made a point of saying something about the shoes. Yeah. It's true. Like.
[01:33:51] Maybe it was like. Don't fuck with grace. It was a message. Don't fuck. But it's still. It's a. He's not totally a mindless killing thing. Like he. He knows how to set shit up. He's got some. He's got. Some more evilness to him. Yeah. The part of his brain. That knows how to fuck with people. Is still fully operational. Yeah. Which I. You know. After meeting him as a little kid. A lot. Fully alive. Um. I don't think that part of his brain was there. Yeah.
[01:34:20] Like he was a sweet kid. Yeah. At least that we saw. Yeah. We should have had him. Set up a practical joke for his mom or something. Yeah. Maybe. Maybe there's some partial amnesia. Or. Some reason he hasn't gone home yet. But he's still. Yeah. Yeah. Around that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because I wonder if they're going to keep it. That Pamela. Doesn't. Actually see. Him. Before her death. You know. Because that's the way it is in the movies.
[01:34:50] As far as we know. Or she keeps. Imagining him. Like she did. Yeah. Imagining him. But not seeing the real him. Or maybe she just didn't know the difference. And maybe she actually had seen him. Well. I mean. She was holding somebody's hand. And then we panned out. And she was standing there. Like she was holding someone's hand. Yeah. There was no one there. That's insane. Now we know there's actually a physical Jason. Unless we're hallucinating or something. So. And the shoe magically flew into the backseat of the car. So. That's all I had.
[01:35:20] What do you got for notes Nathan? We talked about my notes. Okay. Jamie. So in the montage. At the beginning. There's a point where we have. A license plate. Where there's like a license plate number. I'm just curious when that's going to come into play. I wrote it down. Yeah. Got to mean something. I want to see whose license plate it is. Did you like the opening sequence? I mean. I was partial to the episode one's one. Mm-hmm.
[01:35:49] Classic. Because it was Friday the 13th. This one was more horror movie. I mean. I liked. Like. That it was all horror movie ease. That it felt. Like a lot of different horror movies. All kind of put together. And yellow jackets-y. And all of that. So. I like it. I didn't. I didn't love it. Love it. I liked the Jason. I liked the throwback to Friday the 13th. So. I like when a show puts. Some effort into the opening montage. I'm curious if we'll get a different one each episode.
[01:36:19] Now. I bet you this will be. It'll be this one. Especially since. Like you said. They had that license plate. And we haven't found out what it is yet. Yeah. And I'm okay with that. At least we got. A little bit of Friday the 13th. And I read that. I don't know how to say this name. Josue Greco does the music in the series. But Henry Manfredini. Who scored the original Friday the 13th. Came back and composed new music for the opening titles.
[01:36:49] That's cool. And he's dead. So he had to. Reanimate. Any other notes? I saw some interesting. An announcement today. That. That. A24. Is going to release. A novelization. Of this season. Nice. Oh. Yay. Another book for my shelf. Yeah. I'll definitely pick that up. I always appreciate.
[01:37:16] A novelization is based on the screenplay. Oftentimes. And. Sometimes you'll get. Scenes that. Didn't make it into the show. Or the movie. Or you'll just. Things that. You. Weren't quite clear. In the movie. Become more clear. When. They're written down in words. Thought processes. Things like that. Yeah. And. On some level. Novelization. Kind of. Almost feels like. The. Director's cut. Or the extended cut.
[01:37:45] Of the original material. Do they say. Who wrote. Who's writing it? Yes. Look that up real quick. Oh. It's coming out this month. It is. Well. I guess. They're all releasing all the episodes. The same day. So I guess it. Won't be a spoiler. We'll publish Crystal Lake. On October 15th. The very same day. All eight episodes. Of the Friday the 13th prequel. Will premiere on Peacock. Tim. Wag. Uh. Waggoner. Who wrote.
[01:38:15] Terrifier 3. Wrote the novel. Okay. Cool. Uh. Well this says that it is. That Jason died in 1971. And he was 11. Yeah. Yeah. They mentioned that in the. In the show. Yeah. I'm just. Making sure. That was not an 11 year old. Who was standing in the woods. It wasn't. Or a 12 year old. I guess would be at this stage. Did you guys either one. Watch the Norman Bates. Series.
[01:38:45] Is that what it was called? Um. Bates Motel. Bates Motel. Yes. I didn't watch it. But I wonder if this is anything like that. Because it's a similar idea. I feel like. I watched. I heard it was good. I feel like I watched some of it. And I didn't finish it. And I can't tell you why. I remember liking it. It's a few years old at this point. But. It does. I think it does kind of have a similar vibe. Of like. The story before the story. A tamer version of.
[01:39:15] A prequel. A tamer prequel. Um. I know. Austin Nichols. Who played Spencer. Was in that. I remember him being proud of. His part. Uh. Other. Just quick notes. Well. Linda Carlini. I mean. I just think. Like I said. She did a great job. Making us feel like she's. Complicated. And dangerous. Underneath. But I liked that. They humanized her. And made her feel. Relatable in some ways. And sympathetic. And.
[01:39:44] I like Linda Carlini. That's one of the reasons why I was excited to. Cover the series. And she's not disappointing. And I've liked her. I just wanted to list a few things. That I've liked her in. The first one. Is Freaks and Geeks. Which came out. Twenty. Seven years ago. Nineteen ninety nine. Way ahead of its time. So funny. Yeah. It only went one season. I think thirteen episodes. Show about kids in high school. The Freaks and the Geeks. It had.
[01:40:12] The debuts of Seth Rogen. Jason Segel. James Franco. Martin Starr. Who was great in Silicon Valley. John Francis Daly. Now he's a big writer. Dead to Me. We mentioned already. Black comedy. From. Netflix. Christine Applegate. So good. I highly recommend checking that out for people. And then I just started. I mean those are really it. Like she's good in the Avengers. But she doesn't have. That big of a role. And I don't think I've seen her in much else. But.
[01:40:41] I just started watching DTF. St. Louis. And. She's. Pretty good in that. But I. I haven't gotten hooked in yet. I've only watched one episode. But everyone says it's great. It was an ER for like six years. Yep. That's right. Yeah. I never. I didn't watch it during that time. I only watched like the first. Five years or something. Oh no. I watched all of ER. I loved ER. All right. That is our show.
[01:41:10] Episode 724. Thanks for listening everybody. I'm. You know. I wasn't sure if it was a great idea to cover this show on the Walking Dead cast. But now that we've watched the first couple of episodes. I do think it fits in pretty well. Yeah. You know. It's like horror drama. Where you feel connected to the characters and everything. So. I'm hoping you guys are digging it. Please. Let us know. Our next episode will be Crystal Lake Season 1. Episodes 3 and 4. Or.
