[00:00:00] What are you doing?

[00:00:02] Ahh!

[00:00:03] Hmmm...

[00:00:04] I'm going to get scared!

[00:00:06] Ted, what you're doing is irresponsible.

[00:00:09] This club actually means something to this town.

[00:00:12] I know that.

[00:00:13] I do.

[00:00:14] Oh, Tramp, what do you love?

[00:00:17] Is it writing?

[00:00:20] Yes.

[00:00:21] Yeah, good.

[00:00:22] You're darn good at it.

[00:00:23] Thank you.

[00:00:24] Well, me?

[00:00:25] I love Ben. I'm Kristen. This week we are revisiting Ted Lasso Season 1 Episode 3, Trent Krimm, the Independent. Yeah, as we kind of mentioned last week, a character that we just, God, I hope people

[00:01:44] grow to love this character It's all up here. of this series. This series, the soundtrack to this series is phenomenal. Yes. And there are a lot of deep-cut gems that are used throughout the run rock in, you know, the Rolling Stones and bands like that. Beatles clash, the Beatles, the clash, like these are, it is a country known for rock music, but it's a country that is known to be against rock music.

[00:05:41] Right.

[00:05:41] When it first started.

[00:05:43] Well, you know, that's, that's like footloose, I guess.

[00:05:47] I don't know.

[00:06:45] it destroys Ted in return. She's tearing open the curtains and letting the sunshine. She is happy

[00:06:52] until she gets to her office and she sees nothing in the papers and she freaks out.

[00:07:02] This, I think, is fun because as viewers were not yet backing Rebecca, we're still kind of against her because she's is fantastic. Just from the music that used to Rebecca freaking out at the paper. That did remind me though. I've been meaning to say this for three episodes now. So I'm going to say it now. Okay. The opening music of this show. Yeah.

[00:08:22] I don't know if you've noticed this, but I pointed it out last night to Dave and

[00:08:26] and he was like, Oh my gosh, I never noticed that.

[00:09:30] Yeah. So yeah. Yeah, you know, it's interesting to me that Rebecca, and this is, I don't know,

[00:09:35] this is, I guess maybe we could just chalk it up to, you know, season one, Rebecca. But

[00:09:44] Rebecca is so angry and so petty and so narrow-minded that is absolutely one of them. Keeley is another, and Roy is another character that we see. Roy is for sure. Roy absolutely. But I think one of the things we see about Rebecca and Keeley in this is that something I think even Rebecca realizes in this episode is that she was,

[00:11:02] like you mentioned, she was prepared to take Keeley down

[00:11:05] with the ship along with're going to see. And one of them begins in this episode.

[00:12:21] Yes, it does.

[00:12:23] And let me tell you, as somebody who is an oddly specific reference. Like it means that there has to be a picture of you topless on a boat somewhere. And like she kind of coaxes that out of Rebecca to actually show her the picture. Right, well, she's like, you wouldn't mention it if you weren't proud of it. Yeah, Keeley has a read on Rebecca.

[00:13:42] Oh, yes.

[00:13:43] And like the fact that she's like,

[00:13:44] I'm like a teenage boy, but the friendship of Kele and Rebecca is one of my favorite parts of the series. It's excellent. And I like, I love the fact that it starts now.

[00:15:03] It starts now. It starts very early. Yeah. Yes, definitely.

[00:16:03] in this episode. And I think that that's really important for Rebecca right now.

[00:16:09] And she's not being seen as a boss. She's not, although Keely absolutely thinks that Rebecca is a boss, but like in a fun girl power kind of way, she's a boss. Not like I own a business

[00:16:15] kind of boss. Like, no, you're a fucking boss. And I think that's something that Keely that Rebecca

[00:16:22] is kind of embracing because you're right, she's never had that before.

[00:17:24] very funny to see all of the different reactions to these books. But we get some really specific books here, and I did write it down. So I got to get to that page. So excuse the wrestling. I know

[00:17:29] that some podcast listeners don't like wrestling of papers. No, I have two of them, but I know you

[00:17:34] have more. So we see a couple of different books. So we have Sam gets the book enders game,

[00:17:42] which in these books, you see them and you're like, oh, extra teammates. Because the book is about, it's a fantasy about a group of children with different abilities coming together in a community, much like a team comes together. So Ben and I have decided that the Robies of the team are just gonna be called Robbie from here on out.

[00:19:02] These are the players who have no names

[00:19:04] and are not necessarily characters

[00:19:06] that we will get to know.

[00:19:08] They are just Robies. which means two things. One, Ted is already getting a read on a lot of these players. He, it's like right on. Yeah. And two, Ted is more well read than we think. Because he knows these books. Yes, absolutely. Well, yes.

[00:20:22] And we also know that Ted is a really good coach them. And that shows how much he cares about his job. Yeah. And not only his job, but the people that he coaches, like you, like you said, like he is very astute to everything. He is taking the time to learn about these players as people. They're not just players. Which is something that he does expand on in this episode with Trent. Oh, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. It's yeah.

[00:22:45] This also gives us another glimpse into the friendship of Ted and Beard because they both react the same way.

[00:22:48] It's not like Ted reacts that way, then Beard just kind of follows along.

[00:22:51] No, they both do this at the same time.

[00:22:54] Which says that they've done this many times before.

[00:22:56] They've done this before, exactly.

[00:22:59] Which just again further strengthens that friendship and bond.

[00:23:04] The history with them.

[00:23:06] That yeah, between Beard and Coach.

[00:23:08] Yeah. talked about Roy yet, but we'll get to that. We're seeing the beginning of some things with Nate. Like it's worse. We're at the point now. The story has started. We're out of exposition. Exactly. Yes. That's a good way to sum up what I was trying to find the words. I got you, boo. I got you.

[00:24:21] Yeah. So the books is something that like, yeah,

[00:24:23] I wanted to make a note of too.

[00:24:25] And they're furthering the progress It's tough. It's a tougher exterior. Yeah. So, but yeah, I never even really put any, I didn't really think about that before. Like, yeah, everybody else gets a paperback edition, except for Jamie. And no, he's got a hardcover. Totally different than everybody else's book. Yeah, which, I mean, it's F Scott Fitzgerald, there are paperback versions of that book.

[00:25:40] Yeah, right.

[00:25:41] It has been out for a while.

[00:25:43] Yeah.

[00:25:44] So, which could also, I mean, we're seeing the beginning. Now that we know Jamie's a jerk, now we're really going to dig in. Yeah, exactly. But we're not going to dig into Jamie just yet. We're going to start with Roy. Yeah, right.

[00:27:00] And I think that Roy is a really He just says, because Roy goes, you're not going to do anything about it. And he's like, nah. Like, he doesn't tell Roy, he should take care of it. But Roy picks up on it through this Wrinkle in Time book and the fact that he just

[00:28:23] can't sit back and watch Nate get pummeled by the team over and over again. acted as a captain. He's never really acted as a leader. So I think that it's really interesting to watch him come to terms with the fact that he is the leader of this team. That's pretty good Howdy y'all cowboys my name is Ted Lasso and I'm from Kansas pow pow pow He's not even doing proper finger guns

[00:31:01] His fingers are curved like they're not pointed straight like it's this like he's. And, you know, seeing Roy kind of go to confront Jamie about everything. Like, we've already gotten that. He's already tossed the book at this point. We're like, okay, like, yeah, you're a me are Keely, Rebecca and Roy. You know what? I'm going to throw in Trent Creme too, because we really get to know Trent in this episode. You know? Yeah, we really start to learn a little bit more. We start to explore Trent Creme's storyline

[00:33:43] as well. But before we get to that and sticking on is because she is a student at the school that Roy and Tad go to visit and do some really nice things. Definitely. playing you know, which was, you know, it was Roy's event anyways. And Roy Kent comes out and I don't know if you saw that the kid in front with the longer

[00:36:22] hair, he is just obviously a super fan with Roy Kent. I mean, that's like if Kobe Bryant came to, you know, a middle school and said, let's do, let's play horse, you know? It's so funny that you mentioned Kobe because I was legitimately thinking,

[00:37:41] okay, that's like basically shooting hoops with Jordan.

[00:37:44] Well, you know that if I can,

[00:37:45] I will always mention Kobe Bryant.

[00:37:47] You referenced Kobe Bryant.

[00:37:48] I will always mention Kobe Bryant. and Trent smiling because he's like, oh, everybody hate you. But then he kind of, you see, we see how this is perceived through Trent's eyes as Trent realizes this is not for show. This is not something that Trent was invited along so that they could quote unquote see how, you know, approachable Ted Lasso is.

[00:39:02] No, he just was hanging out with Ted Lasso.

[00:39:05] Like, obviously there was we'll talk about this meal a little bit more, but Ted really explains what he views his role to be on this team as, as the head coach.

[00:40:21] And I think that it's like the most important tidbit of information that we have

[00:40:27] gotten about Ted Lasso is as a character. Yeah, yeah, for sure.

[00:41:42] Sorry, I was just reading my notes to see

[00:41:47] where I was going with this, so I was doing two things at once and I shouldn't have

[00:43:00] so I apologize. What was I saying?

[00:43:04] Please help me. at least see shine in this moment is that I mentioned in the pilot, when we were breaking down the pilot episode, how Ted is somebody who automatically gives somebody trust until you give him a reason to not to. Like some people live life in like in order to get trust, you have to earn it.

[00:44:20] Ted gives it until you lose it.

[00:44:23] And we see that that's how it should be. It doesn't matter. Yeah. The best part about him choosing this restaurant is that he chose a restaurant because the cabbie invited him to his father's restaurant. And Ollie was like, nobody has ever taken me up on this offer. And this is where you realize Ted Lasso isn't just any old person.

[00:45:42] He's not doing any of this for show.

[00:45:44] He's observing him. So now we see, and I like that they did that, that we see that the very end, and he's genuine, and he like puts down his backpack. He's like, let me put down my backpack. All right, let's get serious. Like, yeah, he is a genuine person, whether Trent Krim the Independent is with him or nobody's with him. And I think

[00:47:04] that that's such a great lesson is that story. But for right now, you're just left a little.

[00:48:20] What we're seeing. Yeah, you're just left's one of the things too, that when he excuses himself for the mail, he's like, you know, deadlines and such. Trent could not wait to go and write this article. Yeah. He was anxious to get this written.

[00:49:41] Yeah.

[00:49:42] And put the word out there

[00:49:44] because he wanted people to know about Ted. the reading of the article behind it, which I don't have. I don't know if you have it. I don't, but watching Rebecca get angrier and angrier is one of the best parts of that sequence. Well, even before that, with Higgins reading the article and seeing the fear in Higgins eyes when he reads that it's actually positive and he says, keep in mind, I did not write

[00:51:05] this article.

[00:51:06] Right.

[00:51:07] That's right. in that moment that he has failed his job as a leader. And so I think that this is where Roy realizes that he needs to be a leader leader. And so he goes to the club. He goes, I love it when he goes to the club because you can see, and this is something that I'll talk about more in the spoiler section,

[00:52:20] but you can see that this team is following Jamie's lead

[00:52:22] right now and Jamie doesn't care or notice

[00:52:26] that this team is following his lead comes realization when he's like, oh no, I realized then it has to be me. And then he's like, fuck. Yeah. And feed. He's like language. That's a bad word, Uncle Roy. And that's when he leaves and he goes to the club. Yeah, to confront Jamie. Right. And I think what I think like it's not just the fact that like he goes and he

[00:53:43] confronts Jamie.

[00:53:44] It's the fact that Roy calls him a child.

[00:54:41] literally the same day.

[00:54:45] Because he's he we understand by the end of this episode that he is more introspective than we give him credit for.

[00:54:49] Yes.

[00:54:52] But that's all I have.

[00:54:54] I'm other than, um, spoilery stuff.

[00:54:58] Yeah, I have some spoilery stuff too.

[00:55:00] I was looking to see if there is a, um, if there's actually wording of the article,

[00:56:05] But so I have read that book and it didn't grab me the way that it grabs other people, but I can see why it was used for Roy. And I love the fact that he read it to Phoebe,

[00:56:10] which does suggest that it is a book for younger readers.

[00:56:15] Yeah, which I mean, again, we see him reading it to Phoebe. So it plays right along with that.

[00:56:23] Yeah, so I'm with you. Let's dive a towel. Yeah, but that seems very flirtatious. Like that seems like Keely's nature to just kind of do that because we've seen her walk into the locker room before. So I don't think- Yeah, she pauses because it's out of the locker room. Yeah.

[00:57:40] That's why he's this.

[00:57:41] And I think that there's a difference.

[00:57:42] Yeah.

[00:57:43] Maybe.

[00:57:44] I don't know.

[00:57:45] Well, and I think that's right.

[00:57:46] I think that's basically it.

[00:57:47] She's seeing him outside of the locker room for the first time. I love seeing early, early kints and stages of Roy and Keeley because they're my favorite. Yeah, I completely agree with you. I like to think that they ended up together. That's my head canon. It's left very open.

[00:59:01] It totally is.

[00:59:03] You can make an argument for Jamie and for Roy.

[00:59:07] But Roy is my answer. right now. And that to me is very, that, that is so truthful of how it is in reality, right? These big bullies that especially in schools, they are often the ones that have the biggest secrets in their life. They're the ones that don't want to admit who they really are. And they're

[01:00:20] so scared of being found out of who they part of that in season three. Let me see. When does Colin, let's see. Oh, no, it's season three.

[01:01:40] Yeah, I know.

[01:01:42] Yeah.

[01:01:43] Oh, it's late in season three.

[01:01:45] Right.

[01:01:46] Jesus.

[01:01:47] No, that was, he basically broke their brains by saying, you're free. Bye. Yeah.

[01:03:00] I want to talk a little bit about Nate's play.

[01:03:03] Mm. Oscar at the SPs, not any. So I misspoke. You don't win an Oscar at the SPs. But what I really took away from that in that relation to this is that one, yes, it's Nate's play that wins the game for them because Ted does the performance and then Jamie does the performance during the actual game. I mean, come open, come open.

[01:04:21] But this, I think this really speaks awatched this. Right. Now I understand that. Yeah. Because I remembered Nate's play. And I love that it's Nate's play that wins the game in the end. Well, that's funny that you mentioned that because, you know, at the end, we at the in the series finale, we also get Trent Krimm talking about his book.

[01:05:43] Yeah. You know, and we Ted took it out of the trash. It's, we don't see that book again. Until the finale. Until the finale. I'm telling you, like this is a really important episode. It is when Sam takes out the first piece

[01:07:00] and Jamie is the next person to take out the piece,

[01:07:03] he takes it out of the book.

[01:07:06] He's had that book is I can turn pages. I'll start.

[01:08:20] Go ahead.

[01:08:21] I'm Roy Kent and I get paid to play a game, but I'm mad all the time.

[01:08:25] That's actually pretty good. the desk and that was a branding joke. Right. I feel like if we were back home in Kansas, I'd be waiting for you to stop laughing right now. Just love it. I like it. I got Lasso mixed passo and creates Team fiasco. Whoa, Keeley's got bars. Keeley's got bars. I'm cute as a button and I can ry my ass off. God, Snow wonder they want to destroy me.

[01:09:44] I'm telling you, this is the episode I basically fell in love with Keeley.

[01:10:43] When Ted asked Beard about something and his reply is, Illinois State Champs, bebe?

[01:10:44] I love it.

[01:10:47] Every time that beard says bebe, bebe, bebe.

[01:10:51] Yeah, the bebe is going to come back a lot.

[01:10:55] I have one other quote, but I actually have the quote.

[01:10:59] Oh, do it.

[01:11:00] Do you have any others before I play it?

[01:11:02] Hang on.

[01:11:03] I used to wrap up.

[01:11:04] Oh, this is going to be No. And that's from a completely different time. Like we will, it is the first of many. Roy Kent's voice deepens like little finger in Game of Thrones. Like both of them just like go into these

[01:12:20] like different registers of their voice

[01:12:22] to be their character.

[01:12:23] And Rose Adnias from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

[01:12:26] Yeah, yeah, Jenny. And I'm so glad that this is your first time watching. Hopefully our format is doing well for you and helping you to be able to kind of avoid the spoilers, you know, putting us.

[01:14:47] So, but more importantly, we hope you're enjoying the show because we, again, we just absolutely adore the show. And I know I speak for Kristen on that one as well.

[01:14:49] And of course, what is an episode of Revisited without some feedback from our friend Steve Brown,

[01:14:57] which he sends to us in the form of a voicemail in a live steving, if you will.

[01:15:03] So we'll go ahead and all your buttons right now. I feel like a teenage boy. I can't stop staring at them. Rebecca's tits. Of course, everybody, all the kids love Roy Kent. Roy can get away with using the F word in front of a bunch of school kids. Nice and Roy with the headbutt soccer ball

[01:16:21] and Phoebe's just adorable.

[01:16:23] Am I supposed to be the little girl?

[01:16:25] I've been Roy talking about the wrinkling time,

[01:16:26] a wrinkling time.

[01:16:28] I love Ted. You've watched the show before, whether it's your first time of this, this is your fifth time. I apologize if I'm stumbling over my words here a little bit. Again, first time I've ever done the solo portion or a portion of this podcast solo. And I'm sure by now you're all wishing Kristin was back, but she will be next week.

[01:17:41] So yeah, again, we wanna hear your thoughts.

[01:17:45] So let us know in at revisited pod.com record yourself in a voicemail and send it over to us via the email or just type something out and send it to us that way as well again revisited pod.com or Feedback at revisited pod those are the easiest ways to do that I'm gonna give you a recommendation this week

[01:19:01] There is a Marvel series that just returned this week. we share it both with my Wilhelm podcast and with podcastica. And there's so much happening over at podcastica right now. You've got Rima and Paik are talking

[01:20:21] about great British big off which just returned on Strangeica.com. Go over there. I promise you there is something for everyone over at podcastica.com. Last but not least, I want to make mention of something from my Wilhelm podcast that's coming up. One of my favorite

[01:21:41] interviews from last year, one of my favorite guests from last year, Josh Robert Thompson, you don't miss out on that. Plus, Kristin and I do the movie swap over there every two weeks as well, where we give each other homework and just discuss those movies and whatever derailments and tangents we go off of that for that. So I think that is it for this week.

[01:23:00] Again, next week's episode, season one,

[01:23:02] episode four, Four of the Children is a great episode.

[01:23:07] I encourage you guys to leave the feedback,
