[00:00:00] So I've been hearing this phrase y'all got over here that I am too crazy about.
[00:00:18] It's the hope that kills you.
[00:00:20] Y'all know that?
[00:00:25] I disagree. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:01:40] Yeah. It's a very fair point. So, yeah, season one finale, we are at the end. And I want to, before we get into the episode, man, I've re-watched this finale three times. And I want to say, if it's not already apparently obvious, God, I fucking love this show.
[00:03:05] It's such. I'm having a coffee morning. She still muted her mic, but that cough was so loud. It's still. It's violent. Yeah, like there's there's still like a great sense of hope by the end of this episode. There is again, I watched the episode like three times.
[00:04:22] I cried all three times.
[00:04:25] I cheered all three times. every time that movie gets me every single time. Yeah. So, you know, it is the hope that kills you. And they really prove that in this episode, right? Because the whole time you're like, oh, I believe in miracles, Ted Lasso's gonna do this, blah, blah, blah. And then what happens? We get really hopeful and then it gets like, it's that football that just gets, what is it, the football that gets pulled out
[00:05:42] at the last minute for Charlie Brown.
[00:05:44] When Lucy pulls the ball for Charlie Brown.
[00:05:47] Yep. Let's dive into the episode. Okay. Because that's the first opening. It's the opening of the episode. So before we do, obviously we gotta say, we're gonna try to avoid spoilers as much as possible for the future of the series, for those of you that are watching, but watching for the first time, but we will do a spoiler section later. So make sure you check the show notes. So if you're the one to avoid that, you know, to skip it.
[00:07:02] But yeah.
[00:07:03] I just wanna apologize in advance
[00:07:04] because my voice is super gravelly.
[00:07:06] I'm coming off of some sort in a spoiler territory, obviously. But if you have, even if you haven't seen it, even if you haven't seen the show all the way through, we see a side of Nate we haven't seen before. Yeah. And that's when he confronts Rebecca. And it's alarming. If you're paying attention to the show, it's alarming.
[00:08:20] Well, cause it's something that Nate hasn't done before.
[00:08:23] Right. I mean, we've seen, we've seen his nasty side
[00:08:26] with that amazing speech that he did. that and we get to that moment where he's offered a contract and he's now a coach. He's now officially a coach of the team. It is a great moment for Nate. It's even better when you see that everybody, every member of that team, all of the coaches, to Higgins and Rebecca,
[00:09:42] everybody is happy a coach. He's no longer the kitman. Did you forget that Will came this early? Cause I did. No, I didn't. I remembered Will comes in this episode. Okay. Cause I was like, David and I looked at you and said we're like season one? Yeah. We were just like, it blew my mind that he was a season one character.
[00:11:00] I thought he was season two character.
[00:11:02] Well, I mean, he is a tail-end season one character.
[00:11:05] We only get him in two scenes this episode. It feels like Christmas. Stop that. Can't. So maybe you're right. I mean, maybe he does. Maybe he does come in that early. Anyway, I mean, again, we're already past it. So it's it doesn't matter if I'm right. But like I would have had a note in here that says meet Danny Rojas.
[00:12:22] Danny Rojas Danny.
[00:12:24] Did you struggle a little bit? But when they open it, it's presented in like the red felt with the AFC Richmond logo on it. And, you know, it's very on brand for Nate. And I just, I love that they took that consideration and made that for him to make this presentation. Mm-hmm. Well, and it just, they, what we see in this last episode really, So if you I'm somebody when I'm on social media, I if I'm using gifts, I always try and find like Ted Lasso gifts that go along with it. That moment where they're going back and forth about the decision on captain, like Roy doesn't Roy thinks Ted should get should make the decision, but he's like, no, captain should do it. It's so funny him is that he is the encyclopedia that Ted needs for the game, but he's also like his little Jiminy Cricket at the same time, his weird drug fueled Jiminy Cricket. It's so funny that you bring up the encyclopedia too, because we'll get to it shortly. But the moment during the game where they're talking about the off-sides rule,
[00:16:22] I say he goes, no, really tell me. I don't know.
[00:16:26] But I was like off-side.
[00:17:22] this entire story. Like Jason Sudeikis said, okay,
[00:17:25] if we don't get picked up for season two or three,
[00:17:27] like let's make sure that we leave on a hopeful note,
[00:17:30] but we also kind of closed up the story as well,
[00:17:33] just a little bit, right?
[00:17:34] I mean, it begs for a second season,
[00:17:37] but if it wasn't gonna be well received
[00:17:38] and Apple decided to cancel it,
[00:17:40] it wouldn't be an incomplete story.
[00:17:45] True.
[00:17:45] Yeah, absolutely.
[00:17:46] It leaves you with hope at the end. that created this show. But yeah, so like following that whole scene with deciding who's gonna be Captain, we then progress into the team together in the room because Nate wants to show them a video and that video is of Jamie. This was not the right time, I think.
[00:20:03] harder to get it. But yeah, I could see where you're coming from as well as that. Maybe this wasn't the right time to do this. Although it and it cost them a TV
[00:20:12] because Macadoo ends up throwing a chair.
[00:20:15] Yeah, but it earns some captain.
[00:20:18] Yeah, it really I think I think Macadoo had already earned captain at that point,
[00:20:23] but that was the like that was the moment there.
[00:21:28] I know well the listeners are enthralled. Well, don't don't edit this out. What is wrong with you? Edit this out. I don't read it. I don't edit that off in this out.
[00:21:36] You know what? If he didn't edit this out, then I'm very sorry.
[00:21:39] Sorry. Everybody. You're not hearing. They're not hearing this. Okay. Good. Yeah. That was what was well said. Yeah. Was getting at that frustration. Knowing Roy. God, there's still shit. Yeah, and then Roy says, never stop smashing TVs. I love that line. Like that's basically Roy telling Macadoo, don't change.
[00:23:01] Like continue to be yourself.
[00:23:04] You know, continue to be you.
[00:23:06] Right.
[00:23:07] Which is such a great change of pace.
[00:24:21] It shows that Rebecca's changed. Yeah. It he ended up needing several stitches after the scene. Yes. I read about it and I was like, Oh, damn. Cheese. Well, that, I mean, adds to the scene. Yeah. It's hilarious. It just, it shows how like how into it he was.
[00:25:40] He's like, yeah, let's do this.
[00:25:41] Whoa.
[00:25:42] Yeah.
[00:25:43] Okay.
[00:25:43] Fine.
[00:25:46] Oh my gosh.
[00:25:47] All of those plays that they start, Midnight Poutine, Chitty, Chitty, Bang Bang. Oh, with Dick Van Dyke. The broken tap, Think Man City will leak a lot of goals from it. Loki's toboggan upside down taxi, Hadrian's Wall, Dirty Montini. Was it Hadrian's Wall? Hadrian's Wall, yeah. That's the one I didn't quite get as I was writing them down.
[00:28:04] episode. And it is the second half of this episode, pretty much as the entirety of the second half of this episode. But there's a scene that happens before that. And that
[00:28:10] is when Jamie goes to visit Keeley.
[00:28:13] It is underwear the whole time.
[00:28:19] I love that Royce, the one that answers the door.
[00:28:21] Yep. In his underwear. It's kind of like they hate a certain version of themselves and each other. Like Roy hates who he was as a younger player, a younger, you know, arrogant player. And Jamie hates the fact that he's going to want to get old. He's going to become Roy Kent exactly.
[00:29:42] Missed me.
[00:30:44] Yeah, I'm like, I will pour some of the coffee into the coffee that Roy made. And if that isn't Keeley at the heart of who Keeley is, I don't know what is.
[00:30:52] Yeah.
[00:30:53] Yeah.
[00:30:53] There are so many great moments from characters in this episode.
[00:30:56] Keeley included because there's, there's another moment from Keeley coming.
[00:31:00] Yes.
[00:31:00] That from the game that I just, I, I just adore.
[00:31:05] Um, but I also love the end of this episode.
[00:32:03] to F's, like he just doesn't care. And there's just such a difference in each of their characters.
[00:32:09] And I can't wait to see Jamie get to that point
[00:32:13] that Roy is already at.
[00:32:19] Yeah, but that does take us into the game.
[00:32:25] The most important game of the season,
[00:32:27] because if AFC Richmond wins, Look, there are stupider kick starters and go fund me out there. Go fund me things out there for them that are dumber than that. Um, so before the game starts, we get Keely and Rebecca in the stands and it's great seeing Rebecca in the stands.
[00:33:41] She cares as a fan.
[00:33:43] Yeah.
[00:33:44] She cares about this team now.
[00:34:44] And we meet Higgins' entire family. The whole family now gets to come to the game,
[00:34:46] which probably was a first.
[00:34:48] Yeah, they all get to be at the game,
[00:34:50] not just at the game, but in the manager's box.
[00:34:53] Yeah, yeah.
[00:34:55] And are all of his kids, do all of his kids
[00:34:58] have traditionally female names?
[00:35:02] I didn't catch all of their names.
[00:35:03] I know there's another Leslie.
[00:35:05] There's a Dana.
[00:36:01] or life's little gray. I love the Higgins family.
[00:36:06] I do.
[00:36:07] I agree.
[00:36:08] I love the Higgins family.
[00:36:10] We get so much.
[00:36:12] We definitely get more of the Higgins family.
[00:36:15] I know for sure going into season two, we get more of them.
[00:36:20] It's unfortunate timing-wise, it won't work out that we won't be doing the Christmas
[00:36:26] episode around Christmas.
[00:36:27] I know. followed by a guy. I do just to stay with that armband thing. I do like that they trade off the armband throughout the game. Well, because when Roy is, yeah, when, well, Roy says it earlier on, like the captain needs to be on the field. Well, no, no, no, I understand that. But there's like this, I guess they have like such a terrible first half or something
[00:37:42] like that.
[00:37:43] Like, Macadoo just comes up and gives it to me.
[00:37:45] It's like, this was garbage.
[00:37:47] Like almost like I didn't deserve this. and humor? Maybe. It could be. But you know what? That leads us into one of yet many Ted Lasso locker room speeches, where he talks about the hope that kills, you know, and how he doesn't agree with that. He doesn't think it's the hope that kills.
[00:39:02] And it goes into the whole, do you believe in miracles? You don't have to answer that. 2020 was the last episode. We got 10 weeks, 10 weeks of hope in a very hopeless year. Yeah. And the show just took off from there. I think that's one of the reasons why I love this show as much as I do. I mean, not putting aside the fact that it is amazing writing, amazing characters, amazing acting.
[00:40:22] I think because of when we, I think I would have City. You think so? I think the team had written off Jamie at this point. Even after that video. Maybe, if I think deeper about it, I wanna say yeah. I wanna say I think the team was more about, I think they had already proven themselves,
[00:41:42] that they didn't need Jamie.
[00:41:44] Yep.
[00:41:45] Okay.
[00:41:47] It could have a mind game to Ted. Jamie thinks it that way. Jamie thinks it is and that's kind of the thing, right? Is that Jamie needs to get out of his own way.
[00:44:21] Yeah, yeah, for sure.
[00:44:23] I mean, he's getting the dumbest haircut.
[00:44:25] Like we see him when he's doing this intentionally. No, he thinks he looks good. Yeah. And maybe he does to some people, but I think he looks horrible. Well, but think about it. Who has been his stylist and his personal appearance person? Kayla, Kayla, Kayla. Kayla. He doesn't have her anymore.
[00:45:40] He's by he's doing this stuff on his own by his own decision.
[00:45:44] And he, well, I don't remember that.
[00:47:03] But I mean, I think that there's a lot the most heartbreaking moments of the episode, but it's oddly a big realization, because you're right. It's what wins Man City the game and causes AFCs the relegation.
[00:48:22] But Jamie learned something.
[00:49:21] great at football. Right.
[00:49:22] Much like Roy Kent.
[00:49:24] Yeah.
[00:49:27] Go ahead.
[00:49:28] No, it's just, it's so great to see
[00:49:31] because, you know, by the end of this episode,
[00:49:33] sticking with Jamie, we fight, we meet Jamie's dad.
[00:49:39] Which is such a harsh thing because, I mean,
[00:49:42] and like we see Ted walking down the hallway
[00:49:45] and he sees Jamie in that room
[00:49:47] and he's used to. Yeah, this is all his life.
[00:52:04] and that he gives Beard that note to give to Ted or to give to Jamie. And it's in that moment.
[00:52:07] Jamie looks so scared of beard walking up to him.
[00:52:11] Yeah, what is this? A love letter.
[00:52:13] But when we see Jamie on the bus, open that note,
[00:52:18] and it's the note from Ted that says,
[00:52:20] way to make the extra pass with the army man.
[00:52:24] And I think the army man is important, But to see Jamie actually open the note, read it and kind of hold back getting emotional. This touched Jamie. This, this affected him. Well, because he saw Ted, he saw that Ted witnessed this interaction between his father
[00:53:41] and him and he probably feels shame, probably anyone, he never stops encouraging people, even if they're not connected to him anymore. He never wishes bad for anyone.
[00:55:01] Ever.
[00:55:02] Yeah.
[00:55:03] I mean, who does that?
[00:55:04] Yeah.
[00:55:05] And we can all say that we can all pretend that we do that.
[00:55:07] And I'm telling you right now like I don't wish harm on you, but I hope you hurt. I hope you step on a Lego in the middle of the night. I hope you, I'm gonna start using that.
[00:56:21] That's amazing.
[00:56:22] Well done, Dave.
[00:56:23] Yeah, he also, I mean, life is more difficult. Yes, I hope that your life is difficult in the future for making my life difficult right now. Yes. So we do see, we're going to get to Roy, because that is't have used it. I got caught up in the adrenaline of everything. But we see them call the lasso special and run the lasso special. And succeed. And succeed. And it is one of those moments in this show
[00:59:00] of which there are many,
[00:59:01] that it doesn't matter how many times I've seen it,
[00:59:04] I cheer.
[00:59:05] Yeah. You know, but to Ted's credit, which can as I bring up this line. Okay. Because you mentioned about how this show hit at the right time.
[01:01:40] Yeah. And I freely admit, we've talked you know? I don't know a better show that could have been on during these last three years than this show to really help people get out of, you know,
[01:03:03] whatever dark spots that they were in.
[01:03:05] And even though they lost this game,
[01:04:05] concert, I actually cried. And it is because the lead singer, David Dremen, who is one of the best front men of any rock band in
[01:04:08] my of all time, in my opinion, he broke from the show. And he
[01:04:13] started talking about how he was suicidal at one point. And he
[01:04:17] was it was the band and touring that brought him back. And at
[01:04:22] one point, he asks the audience, cricket he's the Jiminy cricket that's right yeah that's right coach beard is co is Ted's Jiminy cricket his drug-fueled Jiminy cricket Jiminy cricket Sam is the team's
[01:05:44] Jiminy cricket yes nice your conscience be your guide maybe he's not, but he's probably giving this speech with the intention that he's not going to be coaching these guys anymore. That's in his mind. Right. Well, that's why he does what he does. I mean, he's, he wants to leave them, he wants to leave them with something that they can hang on to next season. Yeah. Because at that
[01:07:00] moment, he doesn't think that he's going to be back to coach them. So he wants to stay. Yeah. And I find it interesting too that it's a little out of Ted's character to do what he did because earlier in the season, he says, I've never quit anything in my life, but he's quitting. He's trying to make it easier for the team because he knows.
[01:09:28] while Ted quitting is one thing he has never done before and he's doing it, we get something else from Ted that he's never done before, at least that I don't remember.
[01:09:32] He's done at all. And that's swear.
[01:09:36] Yeah, I think that's his first.
[01:09:39] I think that's his first F bomb.
[01:09:40] Yeah, because he says, so the next year we get a promotion, which looks great on any resume,
[01:10:41] who was well during this. And it wasn't just about these kids,
[01:10:43] it was also about winning.
[01:10:45] That's the realization that Beard kind of like shocked
[01:10:48] into him.
[01:10:49] And Beard had to do, like everybody plays their roles
[01:10:51] so wonderfully in this first season.
[01:10:54] And we go into the second season with that renewed hope
[01:10:58] and that renewed sense of motivation.
[01:11:03] That okay, we're going to see Richmond come back.
[01:11:06] But it also is a good realization as well That's so interesting that you say that because I have more on that in spoilers now that I didn't have before. Now that you said that. But so I'm very wise. So getting back then to I think the only other element that we need to talk about is Roy is Roy Kent.
[01:12:20] And again, this is one of my favorite moments like this before, like we've seen, you know, like God, in other sports movies, like it's a weird movie to say, but like Rookie of the Year, like we see Gary Busey put everything into his final swing and throw out his arm. We've seen the same thing in Major League.
[01:13:41] It was the same kind of thing.
[01:13:43] Like we've seen these moments before, but for Kobe fans, such as myself. One of the most iconic things that he ever did was that he tore his Achilles heel, his Achilles tendon.
[01:15:00] And he, in order for him to be able to come back to the game later if he wanted to, because
[01:15:06] he didn't know it was torn at that point. about the way he went out. Yes. And you know, it's- With his dignity intact. Yes. And then, you know, so we get these, and I'll admit, I was crying during this because it's such a happy moment for Roy to realize that like, he is who he's always been.
[01:16:22] He just kind of lost his own way a little bit.
[01:16:24] And the commentators even know
[01:16:26] that that was the last time they would have, heartbreaking and sad but just emotional and again like and I love it. It's a great moment, it's not going to change how he feels. So I'm just going to be here.
[01:19:00] Right.
[01:19:02] I'm just gonna be here.
[01:19:04] And then that's when Nate fixes the sign. That's right. He does. You're right. In the series finale, that is how Nate fixes the believe sign. It's with gold paint. Yes. Yes. That's true. So that's a great metaphor that that's how this show
[01:20:22] started with broken characters coming together and then the sign, because when you brought that up, That moment in the season two finale with Ned with Nate and Ted and Nate confronting Ted like I Think I audibly yelled at my television like you are an asshole But you also and and and hopefully when we get there We need to be more understanding to it and yeah because at the time on first watch
[01:21:43] I just remember being like where is this coming from?
[01:22:45] some of what leads to happening in the finale of season two.
[01:22:53] But one of the other things I wanna make mention of since we're in spoilers that I noticed is
[01:22:56] who is sitting together in the locker room?
[01:22:58] Yeah, I know, I saw Rebecca and Sam.
[01:23:01] Yep.
[01:23:01] I mean, it's so funny because I hope
[01:23:05] that that was always the plan to me um, and That's not saying that they're wrong. That's just for me. They've always been alarming to me Because I don't understand it. Yeah, I mean again like it's it's it's more a maturity thing than an age thing
[01:24:22] Like if you're mature enough to handle it. I say go for it
[01:25:24] the team. I think it was Beard that tried the same trick with the team on seeing Nate just scretch Nate's press conference talking about Richmond. Yeah. And it fired everybody
[01:25:30] up, but they all played like shit as a result because it wasn't the Ted Lasso way. It was
[01:25:36] a different way. So when Nate played that video of Jamie trashing the team, I was immediately
[01:25:44] brought to them watching the video of Nate tr are the team they are. He's part of the reason they are the team that they are. That's how I should... Well, and he's a diamond dog. It's I mean, I mean, it's a it's a couple. It's a couple of shop dressed men. Got a but you've done to me.
[01:28:21] You know, I got to play it now that I know that you brought it up.
[01:28:25] And obviously I couldn't grow a beard.
[01:29:26] spoilers as well. So that brings us back. Welcome back to everybody else for some of our favorite quotes from the episode. And I'll kick it off with one right from the beginning
[01:29:30] of the episode. I present to you this whistle, but it is sad. Do you know why? Because it
[01:29:36] has never been blown. It's like the same reason Colin said.
[01:29:39] Oh, and that's get a little bit later on in the game too, when they're doing the lasso special and Sam is running up the ball and they're getting ready to pass the Danny and he's like Danny's inside and Ted's like, yeah,
[01:31:02] he is because he knows the rule now.
[01:31:05] Right.
[01:31:05] Right.
[01:31:06] He knows that he's on side.
[01:31:07] He's like, I understand that.
[01:32:11] the Jamie doesn't check on him well you know I mean because there still is a little bit of good in Jamie I mean it's it's it's a little bit you know it's not much. But mother's name. I'm what's known as a feminine junior. I think the only other line I have is when Ted, Beard, and Nate are at Ted's place and
[01:33:45] Ted kind of runs off to get the believe sign. We have, of course, a feedback from Facebook. We have an email from somebody special in particular. How? I don't know. God, by the last name is yours. I don't know who that is. What? And then we have, of course, our feedback from our friend Steve Brown. So you have the Facebook and the email.
[01:35:02] So why don't you kick it off with those?
[01:35:04] OK, well, I'm going. OK, the next one comes from Lindsey Schlich. Hi, Lindsey. Cute way to tell Nate he was promoted. But once again, I feel like we saw a little snippet of his mean side or maybe I'm biased. I am not a Nate fan. Wow.
[01:36:20] Higgins has a some named Lindsey.
[01:36:22] That's new.
[01:36:24] I love the way I love that Roy prevented good. Oh, but that of course leaves us with feedback from our friend Steve Brown, which we will play that now.
[01:37:41] Hello, Ben and Christian.
[01:37:42] This is Steve and I can't believe I almost let this week
[01:37:44] get away from me.
[01:37:46] It's Thursday and I'm Ted just said it again man mics are dropping everywhere it's the hope that kills you might drop. So you can see why Isaac skipped eight I don't know what why that is when we get the Roy Kent chant I love it I don't understand
[01:40:02] the effort. All right. On to next season.
[01:40:06] I believe we have answered all of his questions.
[01:40:09] Yeah. He did correct me on one thing though. It is Crystal Palace that scores six-nil, not Chelsea.
[01:40:12] I said it was. So I was wrong about that.
[01:40:14] So thank you, Steve, for that.
[01:40:18] He did bring up the the jock itch conversation.
[01:40:20] Forgot about that.
[01:40:22] And we didn't bring up Mackadie counting to 12 and skipping eight.
[01:40:26] On 12.
[01:40:28] Rich Finn on 12. recommendations before we get out. I know we have our Christmas ones, but is there anything other than the Christmas one? I just finished the US and the Holocaust that Ken Burns special and it's fantastic. Whole thing. All three episodes, six hours, well worth your time. It's especially right now.
[01:41:40] Dave mentioned last night, it goes really weird, but it's worth your time. Okay, fair enough. My recommendation is to anybody who is a Dr. Hu fan, like myself, I'm a massive Dr. Hu fan. This is the 60th anniversary of Dr. Hu this year, and they wrapped up the third special that they've been airing for the past three weeks, the first one being the Star Beast,
[01:43:01] second one being Wild Blue Yonder,
[01:43:02] and then this last one called The Giggle,
[01:43:04] which actually had Neil Patrick Harris.
[01:44:05] have kids and you're looking for something to watch with them for Christmas. That one is a really good one.
[01:44:07] Okay. Interesting. I didn't even know there was a diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas, but
[01:44:12] either.
[01:44:13] Maybe I'll check that one out. Mine is another is a Disney movie, but I'm going to recommend
[01:44:22] there's a Disney Christmas movie called Noelle. And, they're not together anymore, but they did date for a couple years after I think this was the movie where they met and started dating. And it was funny because they brother and their brother and sister in the movie. So it's just like Dexter. Yeah, sort of. Yeah, with Michael.
[01:46:46] It's going to be feet listener feedback and the feedback is very specific to Christmas in that I want to know what some of your
[01:46:54] Traditions are when it comes to movies and television for Christmas what Christmas movies do you watch every year?
[01:46:58] Which ones do you make sure to avoid? What are some of your favorites? Is there a particular time that you watch them like I want to know what your traditions are when it comes to movies and television at Christmas time?
[01:47:04] So if you're willing and I hope you are
